Light Beer Scam or Flavor 00:15:18
Beer.
Have you ever wondered why there aren't any ingredients listed on a bottle?
And is light beer really a scam?
They can lead to weight gain.
Plus, my language can be what I call street but sweet.
Vivica A. Fox on breakups because he's savage and king of petty.
Breakdowns.
My knees were just a mess.
And taking your hustle to the next level.
Learn to attack intelligently and keep that humble spirit.
Coming up next.
to say some lies today.
I love you, Becca.
And one of America's favorite drinks, beer.
That's right, we gotta show them beer today because we're uncovering the secrets that the beer industry may be keeping from you.
Now, have you ever wondered why there aren't any ingredients listed on a bottle of beer?
Ever thought about that?
And is light beer really a scam?
They can lead to weight gain.
I send core team expert and award winning food journalist Mark Shasker on the road to investigate and reveal why he says choosing the right beer.
Can actually be good for your health.
What's there to love about beer?
It tastes like water, it's high in calories, and the stuff is so easy drinking there's even a special word for what it does to your body.
The beer gut.
Well, I have good news.
Americans don't have to drink plain old beer anymore.
Because in the last decade there's been an explosion of breweries creating beer in small, exquisite batches known as craft beer.
And recent research has shown that craft beer.
Can actually be good for you.
So today I'm revealing the top five reasons to fall in love with craft beer.
Reason number one craft beer tastes great.
There are now more than 3,000 craft breweries in the US, and I took a trip to New Orleans to visit one of them, Nola Brewing Company.
Kurt Coco is the founder, and he told me what separates craft beer from plain old suds.
It's the quality of the ingredients.
30 different malted barley that we choose from, whereas a large brewer would use one type of malted barley and then they would use corn syrup to increase the sugar levels.
We also have over a thousand different hops that we can choose from.
Reason number two to love craft beer it's healthy, really.
Craft beer has vitamin B, there's probiotics in the beer, just like you would have in yogurt.
And remember those hops that Kirk was talking about?
Turns out they're loaded with antioxidants.
And that brings me to reason number three to love craft beer.
So, one of the great things about craft beer.
Beer is that it's going to end up being fewer calories and carbohydrates than the macro beers because you're not drinking as much.
So, you're saying because these beers are so flavorful, you end up drinking less?
Absolutely.
Reason number four to love craft beer it's cheaper.
Because let's do the math, people.
If craft beer is more flavorful and more satisfying, you're drinking less of it, and that means you're spending less money.
Reason number five to love craft beer it goes hand in hand with great food.
So, for this spring onion pizza, we've got an IPA, great bitterness, balanced really well with those sweet onions, and then we've got just a great summertime pilsner.
Crisp, light, refreshing, perfect beer for some smoked chicken wings.
Thanks.
I must now eat all this food and drink all this great craft beer purely for research, of course.
Marcus, have all the fun.
All right, now we now know beer can have some pretty hefty health benefits, but not all brews are created equal.
Here to break down the truth about what's really in your beer that you're drinking and how to pick the best one.
Is Thrillist's beer contributor, Jack Mack, who says that the beer industry is the wild, wild west of ingredients.
Why is that?
Well, I would even so much call it the wild, wild west as I would uncharted territory or undocumented country because we live in a country where pretty much everything we put into our bodies has ingredient lists and nutrition facts, calorie counts.
And when you go to restaurants, you see how many calories you're about to consume.
But when we're picking up a beer or an alcoholic beverage, we actually have no idea what's in it or how many calories or what the nutrition facts are.
Why is that?
That has to do with the fact that alcohol is regulated differently than food products in this country.
It has actually a lot to do with the repeal of prohibition back in 1933.
The government created something called the Tax and Trade Bureau, known as the TTB for short, and they're the ones that impose the regulations on any liquor products.
But the TTB is run differently than the FDA in a lot of ways.
Come on over here.
You say there are some items, ingredients that are in our beer that might surprise us.
So here's a list.
Please walk us through some of these, and there are a few that really shocked me.
High fructose corn syrup is one that we're all pretty familiar with.
They just spoke about that in the video.
Usually used to aid in fermentation, up the amount of fermentable sugar, and up alcohol content.
Propylene glycol is actually something that's not added to beer.
It's a refrigerant that's used on the cooling jackets and fermenters, the big tanks you see when you walk into a brewery.
But it's not added to the beer itself.
Carboxymethylcocellulose is actually used to aid in foam retention and head retention in beer, which is an important part when you're pouring it to have a healthy.
Hey, what, that big thing?
What about the fish bladder?
Fish bladder.
Are you serious?
This is one of my favorite things about it.
Fish bladder, everybody?
Yeah, it's also known as Isenglass.
It's actually been used in beer for centuries and in wine.
It's widely used in both.
It's used as a fining agent or something to remove particles from the beer and to filter it without having to actually pass it through a filter.
This is, like I said, something that's been done for centuries.
It's more of a weird gross out factor for people than it is anything else, but it's important if you're vegan because that's becoming a trend.
And if you want a vegan wine or beer, you need to know whether or not Isinglass was used when they were making it.
And then coloring, preservatives, artificial flavorings.
The typical things that you see if the beer wants to be a little darker, the caramel coloring, things like that, and mass produced beers often to get that desired color at the end.
I don't like to falsely alarm the audience.
I try to focus on things that really matter.
Do these things really matter to the Viewers.
Obviously, none of these things in your beer are toxic.
It's just important to remember that when you're making a choice in the shopping, in the grocery aisle, what decision you make.
Doing a little research can make it a little easier to make the right decision.
So, help us with that, because Mark, in a little piece, argued that it was actually a very healthy thing to drink beer if we had the right beer.
So, there are three main components to beer most beers, anyway.
So, you get malted barley, you have hops, and you have yeast.
So, walk us through these and explain how you make these come together to make a delicious brew.
Well, malted barley is the base grain for making beer.
Used to, they essentially boil the ingredients to extract sugars from the grain, and the sugars from that are used to create the alcohol.
Right, hops.
Hops are, this is the most interesting thing to most people, hops are a member of the cannabis family.
They're used as.
Cannabis family?
Yeah, absolutely.
There you have it.
Yeah.
It was just a matter of time.
Their aroma and bittering properties are what's important in making beer because the wort imparts sugar and sweetness.
Hops are used to balance that out and act as a bit of a preservative and a bit of an astringent in some cases, stopping a bacterial infection.
But these days, certain styles tend to use them to a greater degree, and they're becoming recognized as a more major contribution to the beer flavor profile.
And the yeast?
Yeast is actually, if you ask any brewer, they're going to tell you this is what's actually doing the work when they're brewing.
So now we've whipped your appetite, I hope.
Up next, our investigation continues with a couple of big questions.
First off, Is light beer really a marketing scam that can lead to weight gain?
Is it possible?
A beer industry insider reveals the truth when we come back and lots more.
What drove the moms of six adopted kids off a cliff?
In an exclusive, neighbors who tried to save the children speak out.
Plus, new at home beauty DNA kits.
Can they really tell you about protecting your future health?
All nuance.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Beer contributor Zach Mack revealing the truth about one of America's favorite drinks.
Today we're asking is light beer really a marketing scam that might lead to weight gain?
Not loss, but gain.
You own a bar.
Yeah.
How common is it that someone walks in there and says, I want a light beer?
Every single day of every single week is someone else coming in asking for one of those.
As a certified beer expert, what do you think about light beer?
As a certified beer expert, it's not my opinion.
It's not my job to tell people what they do and do not like.
But I can personally tell you that if you're drinking a beer, it's something you should be enjoying, like a good meal.
It's usually brought out with good friends at good times.
It shows your tea's great.
And I honestly don't think that something that's built specifically to taste not like much and be low in calories is doing that.
And it raises another question for me.
I'm always worried about foods that have been altered a little bit because never quite delivered.
So you keep drinking.
I'm going to introduce everyone to a dietician who's worked in the beer industry for years, Dr. Jordi DeBoe.
Now, we have all been led, and we just talked about this remarkable phenomenon of especially women wanting to get light beer.
They come up to the bar, they muscle up there, and they think they're getting a deal with their light beer.
Is it a thoughtful, is it a truthful comment to believe you might lose weight with a light beer?
Well, we know light beer actually has about 50 calories less than a regular beer.
But here's my issue with it it's less flavor as well.
So, what it may end up doing is causing you to drink two light beers to get that flavor punch versus just drinking one regular beer.
So, if you think you're going to drink more than one of a light beer, you might as well just drink the regular beer and really enjoy that flavor.
All right, so if you're going to have a regular beer, which happens to be my general, because whenever we do these studies, take milk as the example.
Take the fat out of milk, take the flavor out too.
You think you're going to lose weight because it's skim milk.
Never seems to pan out.
I have the exact same concern here, but I've also learned a couple things about what's in regular beers.
Come on over here.
If you're going to get regular beer, right, first off, it might be a better choice than any other alcoholic beverage.
And then within the beers, there might be some that are actually better for you, you haven't thought about.
So I'm going to blow your mind with this.
So, first off, the issue of beer versus wine versus hard liquor, which is best for your waistline?
Well, what I love about beer is it's a measured dose, meaning you're getting it in a bottle, you're getting it out of the tap, in a glass, so you know exactly how much you're consuming, and thus knowing the alcohol and the calories.
The issue with wine is the fact that the wine glasses have gotten bigger over the years.
You go out, you're drinking, they keep topping your glass off.
You're getting more than what they call five ounces, which is the standard drink.
And then with spirits, if they're making it behind the bar or you're not really measuring the one and a half ounces, you start to quickly add up the alcohol and the calories.
Plus, mind you, look at all the juice and the sugar and the calories that are coming in just with that alone.
So, in my mind, beer is just the better.
Choice when you're trying to really watch those calories and watch the alcohol.
So, if beer is the better choice, which of the many beers?
Yeah.
Come on over here.
And this is, listen, there's so many options out there.
All these fancy, dancy micro breweries and even the big boys making different kinds.
I laid it out here.
So, I want you to take us through from lagers all the way down the stouts there.
Give me your lowdown, which ones might make the most sense.
And there are a couple here that absolutely surprise me, and they'll surprise you too.
Well, this is just a beautiful display.
So, first off, if you're new to beer, you might want to start off on the lower end here, meaning lower in color and flavor, and it's lighter.
And as you work your way up and get more comfortable, so you say, you can start with some of these wheat based beers.
That's really more of the flavor coming through.
Is it the IPAs, the Pilsners?
Yeah, the Indian Pale Ales.
That has more of a bite from the hops.
The Pilsners are great, they're light, they're crisp.
And then you get more into the darker side of beers, which is really coming from The roasting of the barley that's used.
Now, one, usually what's thought of is the darker beers provide more nutrition.
That's not necessarily the case.
You get an array of vitamins and antioxidants in all of these beers.
And in fact, some of the darker beers, even though they have more flavor, can be lower in alcohol than some of these down here.
So, you know, try them out, experiment.
They're great styles and flavors within beer.
So the color makes a difference.
Although nutritionally they're the same.
I'll come over here for a second.
I know this is an area of expertise in Europe.
I always thought.
That the dark beers tasted the best to me.
But I was always hesitant because, I mean, they're so full, they got to be fattening.
It's actually a very common misconception.
It's just personal preference that you like them the best, but the dark beers actually have less sugar and less carbohydrates in them, so to say, most of the time, than a lot of these lighter beers.
So it's a big common misconception.
Most people can even assume that darker beers have higher alcohol, like she was saying, but that's not the case.
So dark beer might be the new light beer.
There you go.
There we go.
Is that true?
I'm hurting here.
I will raise my glass set.
I started drinking stout beers because they actually don't have that many more calories than light beers.
Which, again, if I can get all the taste and the fullness and the nutrients, and I'm paying a 10 or 20 calorie difference, which is one teaspoon of sugar, I'd rather just have that.
I don't know about you guys, but that's where I'm headed.
You guys all do your own, but look at the colors, figure this out.
There's a beer coming to your neighborhood soon, take advantage of it.
Up next, for those of you who are not yet convinced that beer is for you, we have the solution the beer alternative that has gone viral.
Now, it tastes like dessert, and if it may be as healthy, heart healthy in particular, as red wine.
What is that?
When we come back, you'll find out.
They're something that we recommend to you as part of a healthy diet.
But now, a nonprofit watchdog group is coming forward with shocking results about what they found in your protein powder.
All new Oz.
That's coming up on Wednesday.
A beer alternative that has gone viral.
Now, if you don't like the taste of beer but want to reap its healthy benefits, well, listen up.
Back to reveal why hard cider is the next big thing in brewing is Dr. Joy Dubow, who's worked in the beer industry for years, but says as a food scientist and a dietitian that this is a drink that everyone needs to know about.
Why hard cider?
Why is it so big with you?
Well, first off, cider is naturally free from gluten.
So if you have a gluten sensitivity or gluten intolerance, it's gluten free.
Great option versus beer.
Actually, it has gluten in it.
So, it's a good option for that.
The other thing is the fact that ciders are actually regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, which is different than beer because it's not considered a malt beverage.
So, what that means for us is we're going to find our nutrition facts panel as well as ingredient list on the bottle.
So, you'll get to know the nutrition and the ingredients when you drink cider.
It's not that sweet.
It sort of tickles in the back of my palate.
Yeah.
Cider: The Gluten-Free Choice 00:12:34
It's much different than I usually would have expected.
I thought it was just apple juice that was fermented.
Well, there's a lot of different combinations.
So, let's move over here.
Well, there are apples, I guess.
Yeah.
Thank you.
Yes.
So, basically, what you'll find within ciders are apples.
So, what they do is they take apples, press them into juice, as you mentioned, and then pitch what they call pitch the yeast.
They usually use like a champagne yeast to get that fermented bubbly yeast.
Yes, it tasted more like champagne made apple juice.
And that's basically coming from the yeast that they're using.
In addition to that, you'll also find where ciders are being made with pears, cherries, there's a blending process.
So, it's really become an art.
And then you will see them adding sugar.
So, again, the beauty is check your ingredient statement.
You'll also know how much sugar is being added to really balance out that flavor.
So, this is a fruit based beverage.
Yes.
Beer is not, wine comes from grapes.
So, how do they all compare when you try to put them back to back?
You're an expert in this area.
Yeah.
So, basically, the fruits that are being used, similar to wine, is going to provide its own unique nutrition.
And what I mean by that is they have a different array of antioxidants.
And so, really, it's all up to you on what you want to.
Want to drink.
Relative to beer, the calories are about the same, but you will find more sugar in the ciders.
So, as a matter of taste, which one do you prefer, beer or a cider?
I'm a beer drinker at heart.
Look at her eye if you can.
But can I tell you something?
Before I, I'm going to do two things unique here.
First, I'm going to tell you something you probably didn't know that I didn't know before the show started.
We're not supposed to drink our beer cold.
It turns out that it messes with the taste, right?
Absolutely.
So, when you have it at room temperature, it releases what we call the volatiles, which we drink, frankly, through our nose.
Plug your nose and taste, it tastes completely different.
And when it's warm, it releases the flavor compounds, so you get much more of that sensory experience.
Some people have the alcohol come out through their nose.
Not good.
But the smell goes in.
And no more of those ice cold glass pitchers, just drink the cold, warm rather.
So, I want to do something I've never done before.
I'm going to go up to my staff.
In the control room because I have let them drink on the job to get their honest opinion.
There's Jacqueline.
Jacqueline, stop drinking.
You're starting to wobble.
Describe the flavor.
So I don't usually drink on the job, Dr. Oz, but this is particularly delicious today.
So I like the flavor.
It has a little bit of an apple leaf taste.
It's pretty floral, and I could definitely have more than one without the bite.
Jacqueline drinks a lot after the job because she knows a lot about alcohol tasting.
There's Allie.
Allie's a supervising producer.
So, would you swap out your regular beer for what you're drinking now?
Definitely.
It's delicious, especially while I'm working up here.
Are you focused?
Is she focused on the work?
So, you've given us the lowdown.
The team likes the taste.
From a health perspective, they're pretty similar.
Yes.
But you're a beer drinker at heart.
I'm a beer drinker.
But Shires are a great way to introduce yourself to beer.
I would drink to that as well.
We're toasting you on everything today.
Thank you very much, Troy.
Everyone, lots more on this.
This is DrRaj.com.
Check it out.
We'll be right back.
Up next, Vivica A. Fox tells all.
She's sharing what you can do to hustle your way out of failure, heartbreak, and negativity.
Gonna spill some secrets out here.
I'll just say you're not gonna wanna miss it.
You know her from mega box office hits like Independence Day and Kill Bill and hit shows like Empire.
Vivica A. Fox.
She's here today.
Now, she says none of her big roles came easy.
Today, Vivica is opening up about how, even though she's been knocked down, she knows how to get back up.
Vivica's sharing what you can do to stop failure, heartbreak, and negativity from taking over your life.
And she's getting real about what it's really like being a woman in Hollywood.
Vivica, come on out.
It is wonderful to see you.
Thank you.
I'm glad to be here.
Finally.
Finally.
I've got you in the hall.
Yes, you do.
Good morning, everyone.
There is so much to talk about, but I want to, if I can, start with your mom.
Yes.
Because although you've had all these huge roles and very different kinds of roles, I understand I've learned a lot about you from reading Everyday I'm Hustling.
Yes.
I'm going to get into it in some detail.
That she gave you some really important advice when you first got to Hollywood.
Absolutely.
My mother was a very hardworking woman who.
Definitely instilled a work ethic in me.
But the main thing that she always made sure that she stressed with me was for me to remain humble.
Because you can be in a business where that ego can get larger than life.
And my mother always told me to keep a humble spirit and that whenever I felt like I was in trouble, to don't be afraid to get on my knees and ask the Lord for a little bit of help.
Yeah.
A lot for that.
Yeah.
So, one thing I love about Vivica is there are a lot of folks see you now and they say, oh, she's successful, she made it big, she made all these movies, but you're very open about the fact that you have to hustle for every single thing you got.
What is it like being a woman, not just in Hollywood, but in business in America?
You've got to learn to get out of your own way sometimes.
You know, sometimes you have to learn to attack intelligently, which I learned from working with some of my co stars.
Attack intelligently?
Attack intelligently.
You know, you can't always go in there like a bull in the China store.
You've got to learn to attack intelligently.
and keep that humble spirit.
Like all those three things, from what my mama taught me to what I've learned from my co-stars, I have found that it has been the key to my success.
So in Kill Bill, Uma Thurman, who's your co star and is a good friend, was open about the fact that she had to do some things, physical things, that taxed her.
She got hurt doing some of those things.
Yes, she did.
What was your experience like working with her?
Your thoughts around that movie?
Uma Thurman, just a class act all the way, and who basically saved my job one time because one time I didn't take the critique too well, y'all.
And she was like, listen, he can fire you.
And she was like, if you just know your place, play your position, and stay in your lane, you can get things to work for you.
Exactly like you want them to.
And she was right.
And she saved my job.
But she also got hurt making the movie.
She did.
What was it like being pushed physically?
Well, that was six months of training.
And I'm going to tell you all, we shot our fight scene four days in a row.
And the very first four days in a row, we destroyed a house in Pasadena.
Like literally every morning, we went to a different part of the house and annihilated it.
But I remember the last day, I used to always, every day before I went to work, Take an Epsom salt bath to just stretch out and just relieve.
And the last day I counted and I had over 30 bruises over my legs.
I did all of my stunts because I was like, no, they're not going to say Vivica didn't do her part.
And I had 30 bruises, but I was very proud of them because they felt like my battle scars.
Like, ooh, okay, I remember that.
That's when the table fell on me.
Okay, that's when Uma missed and really hit me for real.
So, you know, I was very proud of the sacrifice.
And when I saw the film and saw how physically, Great in shape, I was, and then that you could see that it was all me in the scene.
Just it was just, I was so fulfilled.
I really was.
Well, you still look in great physical shape.
Oh, I try to keep it tight and right.
I try, tight and right.
The other thing I've enjoyed learning about you is that you learn from your failures.
Yes, a lot of folks run from their failures.
You've embraced them at all times.
At all times, you talk in the book.
I mean, you must have 30 pages in there talking about Curtis Jackson, 50 Cent.
Yes, a rapper who you do seem to have had a very intense relationship with.
Absolutely.
Just so you know, the book has 19 lessons in a five part series.
And he is in one of the lessons that the devil is fine and that's how he gets you.
Oh my goodness.
But I've learned a lot.
And why he's in the book is because last year there was a lot of misconceptions about our relationship.
I protected him for a very long time just because he had a very special place in my heart and he always will.
But I wanted to have clarity so that everyone could understand.
Because when I bring him up, oh, you guys are still talking about each other.
Well, there were times that I never told.
The reason why it's lasted for so long.
But I didn't write about Curtis to start another feud with him because he's savage and king of petty.
So, y'all know I'm telling the truth.
So, I didn't write that chapter.
I just wanted everyone to know why it's lasted for so long.
And honestly, for myself, to put a period on that chapter and turn the page like my daddy always taught me.
Well, why has it lasted so long?
Wow.
Well, when a person has a special place in your heart, sometimes it's hard to say goodbye.
You know, that person knows the right things to say.
That person knows, you know, how to push your buttons.
And I always felt with him that I found out later after we broke up that he wanted to propose to me.
And so I always felt like, oh, I always felt like I had to make up for that.
And I always felt like, wow, I did something wrong, that I didn't get the ring.
And there's another lesson in there for ladies to don't chase the ring.
Because sometimes if you chase the ring, you'll be going after the person who really isn't your king.
So, if Curtis, if 50 Cent sees this interview, and there's a good chance he will, what would you want him to hear from you?
What do you want to say to him today?
That'll always have a special place in my heart, and I've never spoken negatively about him, unless when he messed with my Empire family.
I had to get him in.
But that I've always respected him and our relationship, and I'm proud of his success, and I wish him continued success.
So, another individual who's captivated a lot of people's attention is our president.
And you starred in Celebrity Apprentice, did quite well on the show.
Thank you very much.
What was that like?
Well, that's five weeks of my life.
I'll never get back, that's for sure.
But I did well on the show.
Out of 16 contestants, I finished in the top three.
And the reason why I did that, because it was a new chapter in my life, that I wanted people to see me as a businesswoman, that to show people that I can be smart, I can attack intelligently, that I can make things happen.
And I can tell you the main reason why I did the show was because at the time, my admiration for Mr. Trump, and I think he's an excellent businessman, and I had a lot of respect for him and a little disappointed in him.
I said it publicly in the way that he's divided our country.
I believe united we stand, divided we fall, and that this is a very strong country and we need to stay united.
You write pretty openly.
Actually, look at the book.
Uh oh.
Oh, my goodness.
Oh, he's got something highlighted here, y'all.
Watch out.
You write openly in the book about the experience.
And I must say, I don't think a lot of people actually know Donald Trump.
They know what people say about Donald Trump.
That's why, and he was on the show.
Well, lately, he's been kind of running his mouth.
Yeah, but that's been, that's him for his entire career.
That is, you're true.
You're right.
And so I always like asking people who have met him personally and have worked with him at an intensity that you have.
Yes.
What they really think about him.
And do they think that he's what he's portrayed as?
And I'm not trying to protect him or be harsh on him.
I'm just trying to get the truth because everyone seems to have their little angle.
Okay.
Well, I think that what you're saying is that here in the book that I say there was somewhat of, you know, it.
Ugh.
There's a little bit of discrimination at times.
At times, I don't know if they knew.
Like, there was one time Ivanka made a statement to the black women on the show.
She's like, You speak very well.
I was like, You know, so you just felt a little bit, well, we're all educated and we are successful.
Don't forget that.
Discrimination on the Show 00:02:14
But I don't even think that she knew that that was an insult.
I really don't think that she knew.
But afterwards, everybody's like, What does she mean we speak well?
So, you know, there was just at times, but.
You know, you learn that they are who they are.
You know, that's the way that they were raised.
And like I said, I don't think she really knew that she was insulting us.
But we all, you know, rose above.
And I was there for my charity Best Buddies, which is a charity that I've been working with for 15 years.
And I won $70,000 for them and I finished three years.
So it was worth a sacrifice.
Yeah.
Advice to the audience.
The single most important thing that viewers right now can take away from you to help them rise to the top, to above any challenge they face.
Well, I say this.
I say, Do the hustle.
I want to help you get out of your own way.
Now, my language can be what I call street, but sweet.
My friends didn't nickname me Ghetto Barbie for nothing, but I also can take you to church because the Lord loves a scrappy girl.
So get out of your own way.
Up next, Viveka's going to share what she carries in her purse, her famous purse.
She reveals the health secrets that help her recharge every single day that can help you, too.
What drove the moms of six adopted kids off a cliff?
In an exclusive, neighbors who tried to save the children speak out.
All nuance.
That's coming up tomorrow.
With actress and author Vivica A. Fox, who's been spilling the secrets to hustle you away to the top every single day.
And now, for the first time ever, because no other slub has ever given us such private access, Vivica.
Okay.
The first time ever, she showed us what's inside her purse.
All of her secret health essentials will be revealed.
But this is a very special purse, an iconic purse that everyone, even I knew about.
Everyone talks about how heavy the darn purse is.
What is that about?
Well, you know, girls gotta have their stuff, right, girl?
Yeah, you know.
So there you are arriving today.
Notice she's as strong as she is.
Pulling her down.
We actually weighed her purse backstage 13 pounds.
Oh, not too bad.
Secret Health Essentials Revealed 00:03:38
That's not too bad, baby.
Bigger than any baby ever born, pretty much.
Carrying it every single day.
So I'm going to go through because I was curious.
When you fill a purse up that makes it weigh 13 pounds, basically it's a piece of luggage.
Yeah, it is.
I mean, but I have to have my stuff because, you know, I do.
I do.
So, you know, for me to drink more water, I've always got a lemon squeeze, you know, because just plain water is boring to me and it won't happen if I. Do the lemon squeeze.
It's a lemon squeeze like this, by the way.
No, it's not that big.
That's 10 ounces.
First of all, you've got to have one that's three ounces so it can get through TSA.
Right.
So, you know, right.
So I always have my lemon squeeze with me.
And then I love a clear lemon.
Before you go for one second, okay.
The lemon, I was intrigued by lemon juice because it's an old Ayurvedic approach.
Oh, okay.
People in subcontinent India all through Asia will often have lemon water first thing in the morning because it gets your gastric juices flowing.
Oh, good.
So it's great to taste, to change the taste, but it's also even better medically.
So, congratulations.
Thank you.
I'm doing the right thing.
I love it.
I love it.
All right, go ahead.
Okay.
And then I always have a clear mascara because when I don't work, I like to have my face nice and clean, but I got to have my brows on point.
So I always just like to brush up my mascara and then I always have just like a lip moisturizer on as well.
You use pain meds?
Yes, and I use over the counter ibuprofen, which we will talk about a little bit later.
Just being on my feet all day and heels, wearing heels, and then also I had stem cell surgery recently on my knees.
I get a little puffy, so I always use an ibuprofen over the counter that's anti inflammatory.
And then this is moisturizer or hand sanitizer?
Yes, hand sanitizer, because you know, shaking hands, people rolling up on you, that sometimes afterwards I'm not trying to carry everyone's germs with me.
Yeah, and 60% alcohol, right?
That's what you have.
Yes, we checked.
It is.
Oh, it is?
Okay.
You're going to have mostly alcohol, not all alcohol, enough alcohol, and I like the fact you put a moisturizer with it so it's not harsh.
That's the main reason I like it.
It was the smell, so I didn't check the alcohol percentage.
But I'm glad to know I'm good.
It won't work otherwise.
Okay.
Is that true, right?
If it's not 60%?
You want to have at least that much for it to really be effective.
Otherwise, you're.
I mean, you can wash your hands in water and soap.
That's okay, too.
But if you use sand sanitizer, it's got to have enough alcohol to kill the germs.
60%, y'all.
Remember that.
Okay.
So you mentioned pain for the ibuprofen.
Yes.
So yours is in the meniscus.
Yes, I had a torn meniscus.
And I didn't want to have extensive surgery.
So I just didn't have three weeks to give someone for the after recovery.
So I did stem cell.
Did the stem cells help?
Yes, it did.
They did.
I get stiff, and that's something I look, look, I'm like, got the eyes.
Now, my knees.
How do I help those?
Yeah.
So, you know, I played football in college.
Okay.
So, my knees still hurt me.
Really?
Yes.
And I never had operated on them, but my meniscus, like yours, this area right in here, is all messed up.
And the reality is the meniscus is only part of the problem, because the meniscus is like a washer between two different structures.
Gotcha.
So, it's a little bit of a lubricant, a little bit of a cushion, but you can actually have a joint with no meniscus, because when they operate, you take the meniscus out, and you don't get pain.
So, the question is why?
Come sit over with me and I'll explain why.
The reality is, like that old song goes, your knee joint is connected to your hip joint.
And the reason we get knee pain a lot of times is because the joints around the knee are in trouble.
And women who wear beautiful high heels like yours, gotta have them.
Gotta have them.
Sorry.
So, the problem is, it puts your heel up, which shortens your Achilles tendon.
And for the Achilles tendon, when your Achilles tendon is shortened a little bit from being held up like this all the time, it changes the pressure on your knee, and your hip gets tight.
Burning Fat vs. Feeling Hangry 00:08:51
Oh, dang.
So, I'm going to show you a little solution.
You're going to be so happy you came on the show today.
Okay.
So, you don't have a dress.
I'm not going to create an awkward moment with you.
Please don't.
But you.
So, you take your shoe off.
Okay.
Right?
And you want to make sure you stretch the joint above and below the knee.
So, you push down the knee a little bit.
That will open up the hip.
You'll feel that in here.
At the same time, grab your foot like you're shaking hands with it and you roll it around.
But notice what I'm doing to the Achilles tendon.
I'm pushing it up.
And you should do this first thing in the morning.
When I wake up.
Yes, because as soon as you start walking.
Don't pick up my phone.
Don't pick up the phone.
Pick up the phone.
Do this first.
Pick up the phone with the other hand.
I have really enjoyed having you on the show.
Thank you so very much, Dr. Oz.
And I'm going to do that in the morning.
You please do.
I'll try.
This book is fantastic.
It's called, you know, first of all, it's tips on how you hustle every single day.
But the book's called Every Day I'm Hustling.
And guess what, audience?
We can give one page to every member of the audience.
Just one page?
Well, it's a start.
It's a start.
What do you think?
I think we should do the whole book.
The whole book?
Yeah!
You all go home with a copy of Biblica's book.
Check it out.
At home, buy one.
You're going to a friend.
We'll be right back.
Up next, it's the flu you have never heard of before the low carb flu.
For everyone who's given up carbs and felt, well, sick, we're investigating why and giving you the plan to get back on track.
Stay with us.
In nine years, we've talked about almost every illness on this show.
But today, something we have never talked about before the low carb flu.
Now, while I can't find this in any of my medical books, sufferers all around the country, especially some very vocal members of my team, I call them the whiners, claim that after just one day, just one day of going low or no carb, they feel symptoms similar to the full blown flu.
And they let me know about it.
So, we're investigating this phenomenon.
Why does going low carb make you feel so sick?
And we're going to give you a three day plan.
They cut carbs without that icky, achy feeling.
But first, check out how my producing team self diagnoses what is called the carb flu.
Lethargic, achy, low energy?
Do you ever get nauseous for no reason?
So, do you feel dizzy and foggy like your brain is just not working?
Do you ever feel crangry?
That's when you're hangry for carbs.
Do you ever feel like you just can't get out of bed?
You may have the carb flu.
After my staff gave their diagnosis, we asked some of our viewers if they'd ever experienced this phenomenon.
I've been off carbohydrates for a week now and I feel really crappy.
I feel sluggish, I feel tired.
My whole body ached.
Without carbs, going to the gym was out of the question.
I couldn't even lift a two pound weight.
I am so hungry.
I need a car.
Here to shed light on this mysterious illness is weight loss expert Dr. Kelly Ann Petrucci.
Now, you say you've actually heard of these flu like symptoms accompanying a low carb diet, so it's not just my producers punking you.
No, it's not.
They're not punking you, Dr. Oz.
This is so common.
I hear this all the time.
And here's the thing you're thinking, why am I not feeling better?
I mean, aren't I doing something that's making me feel better?
Well, you may not feel better at first, so you're thinking, what can I do to succeed?
That's the part that gets everyone.
So, what are the surprising symptoms that you keep hearing from folks?
Yeah, basically, we call it the carb flu because they're flu like symptoms.
You can feel fatigue, headache, sweating and chills, nausea.
It's all on the table.
All on the table.
All on the table.
So, we're going to show you how these symptoms reveal themselves in what we are calling the four stages of carbohydrate grief.
The first stage is something called denial.
Yeah.
Explain this if you don't mind.
Carbohydrates are energy, and so is fat, so is protein, but carbohydrates are immediate energy.
So, when your body doesn't get that immediate energy, it may feel a little fatigued, a little listless, a little tired.
So, connecting the dots, I get it now.
My second issue is anger, which I have personally witnessed among my staff.
Why do they get so angry when they cut carbs, and why do they get angry at me personally?
Well, I can't explain that, but I can only tell you that your body loves this sugar and it loves carbohydrates.
It does not likey likey.
When you take it away.
And when you do, your body has a boom, the blood sugar drops.
We call this reactive hypoglycemia.
And this can make you feel headaches and tired and a little weak.
Yeah, you get all kinds of problems.
Yes.
Again, it makes you angry at other people because you're not feeling so great.
And the sweating and the chills is also from that low blood sugar.
Which I can see that part because that's something we notice in medicine when people have low blood sugars.
Yes.
They actually have symptoms.
Okay.
Next up, you get frustration often at your boss.
Yeah.
So here's where that comes in.
You're thinking, okay, I'm doing this plan.
Surely, I'm going to start feeling slimmer.
But unfortunately, what happens is sometimes you start feeling bloated at first, even nauseous, because you're pulling out your main source of fiber.
Especially for people who aren't eating vegetables on a regular basis, you know, you just took away your fiber.
That's what nausea again makes sense.
This is all coming together.
It all comes together.
And then there's the sadness.
By the way, notice the bread went from a full loaf to half to just one little slice in your frustration.
Now I'm giving you crumbs.
Now you're getting crumbs.
Right.
So that's sadness.
As it should be.
As opposed to that opening video of this voluptuous sauce.
Sadness.
We go right to the sadness.
So here's why you get sad because you know we love the feeling when we're eating carbohydrates.
But here's what's even more interesting your brain actually likes this.
So when your brain does not get this, it's going to tap you all the time.
It taps you by way of cravings, it's going to make you crave more.
All right, up next what's the easiest way to go carb free without getting the flu like symptoms?
Our step by step three day plan is next.
That we recommend to you as part of a healthy diet.
But now, a nonprofit watchdog group is coming forward with shocking results about what they found in your protein powder.
All new eyes.
That's coming up on Wednesday.
We're back investigating the low carb flu that everyone's been complaining about.
It's the phenomenon that causes you to feel flu like symptoms when you cut down the carbs.
Now, it could be keeping you from sticking to your diet.
So instead of suffering through it, we're going to give you a three day carb cut down plan to help you all out.
Weight loss expert Dr. Kelly Antitrici is back to help us out.
You say we can actually go low carb and not suffer the way my staff and so many of the folks watching now have been.
We actually can because here's what happens most people pull the cord, they just rip it out.
And so when they do that, they rip out all the carbs, even fruit.
You don't feel so great, but here's a better way for success.
Do it a little bit slowly so you don't have all the symptoms, and your chances of success, I find, are much higher.
Give us a target number.
What is the amount of carbs that you recommend we eat a day?
So, this really depends a lot on the person, but mostly about 50 carbs or under will keep you in that state.
You all ready for the three day plan to go low carb?
So, first up, why three days?
Why that magical number?
So, that is a magical number because it takes about three days.
For your body to adjust to all of this because something really magical happens.
Your body switches from burning carbohydrates to burning that efficient fat.
So most of your symptoms at that point get dissipated and you're burning fat.
All right, so for day one, you're going to remove all the white sugar, all the processed foods, and you're going to add a serving of low sugar fruit in place of each.
So walk us through what a typical breakfast might be.
Sure, sure.
So for most of us, we're running out the door in the morning and we're just grabbing anything.
So if you make some hard boiled eggs and maybe grab a muffin, Here's what I'd like you to do.
Try a simple swap.
Instead of the muffin, do berries.
And here's how important this is.
Here's how much this matters.
This is about 61 grams of carbs.
And guess what?
This is about 12.
Big difference.
One fifth.
One fifth.
So we're still getting sugar.
We're still getting sugar, just not as much.
And we're getting it with the fiber that's in this case with the raspberries.
It's totally different because when you go from this type of carbohydrate to this type of carbohydrate, you're not going to get that blood sugar whack.
That reactive hypoglycemia, that's the part that really makes people have a hard time following through.
The ups and downs, the ups and downs.
Ups and downs.
Okay, find the rest of the three day plan on drodders.com.
Remember, everybody, happy and healthy, it starts at home.
