[00:01:39] Holly Robinson Pete, famous for her roles on 21 Jump Street and Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, married former NFL player Rodney Pete after he proposed on an episode of the show. [00:01:51] Yes! [00:01:54] The happy couple gave birth to twins just two years later. [00:01:58] But when their son, RJ, turned two, Holly and Rodney noticed something was wrong. [00:02:04] RJ was having trouble making eye contact. [00:02:07] And stopped responding to his parents. [00:02:10] Doctors diagnosed RJ on the autism spectrum. [00:02:15] RJ's diagnosis inspired the Pete family to create the Holly Rod Foundation, which provides support and resources to families affected by autism. [00:02:58] But first of all, before we get started, congratulations. [00:03:00] I know what it takes to have a long term marriage. [00:03:02] You guys are talking about your 20th anniversary. [00:03:04] What a year! [00:03:05] What a year! [00:03:06] But here's the catch Holly says it was not love at first sight. [00:03:09] You didn't fall in love with this adorable man. [00:03:11] Can you believe it? [00:03:12] I was not trying to check for a quarterback in the NFL. [00:03:15] I didn't want an athlete. [00:03:17] That just wasn't what I was looking for. [00:03:18] I was looking for a nice doctor. [00:03:20] A doctor? [00:03:22] Dr. Pete. [00:03:25] But, you know, he got me. [00:03:27] What can I say? [00:03:28] He has good taste in women. [00:03:29] Yes, I do. [00:03:30] So, a lot of folks don't know this about your past, and I appreciate you sharing it to the end of the show. [00:03:34] But, of course, RJ has autism. [00:03:37] And this is an ailment that is a lifelong process for a lot of families. [00:03:43] Tell me about what happened in the very beginning, the moment you noticed that something just wasn't right. [00:03:47] Well, I noticed when he was two that he stopped making eye contact with his twin sister, right? [00:03:51] So he has a twin sister and they're, you know, on the same track milestone wise. [00:03:55] And he withdrew from her and he disconnected. [00:03:57] He stopped answering to his name. [00:03:59] I just noticed. [00:04:00] That he was just disconnected. [00:04:02] And I went to Rodney and I was like, you know, what's up with him? [00:04:04] And Rodney was like, oh, he's fine. [00:04:06] He's a boy. [00:04:06] And, you know, he's fine. [00:04:08] He's a boy. [00:04:09] Oh, yeah. [00:04:09] That's what I was being told, Doc. [00:04:11] You know, boys, they're twins. [00:04:13] You know, the boys a little bit behind the girls. [00:04:15] The girls will develop a little bit faster. [00:04:17] And I was like, he'll be all right. [00:04:18] He'll grow out of this and he'll be okay. [00:04:20] Right. [00:04:20] That's what I was saying. [00:04:21] So let me just go through this. [00:04:22] You mentioned a couple quickly, but wasn't making eye contact. [00:04:24] Right. [00:04:24] Right. [00:04:25] Didn't smile when he was being smiled at. [00:04:27] Didn't connect. [00:04:28] Didn't. [00:04:29] And then really regressed in his language. [00:04:31] I mean, he just sort of went within. [00:04:33] Went backwards. [00:04:34] That's weird. [00:04:35] He regressed. [00:04:35] So you took him to a physician. [00:04:37] Rodney, what did the specialist tell you was going on, and what did he tell you about the future? [00:04:42] Well, it was the darkest day because it was a she, and you expect her to have a little bit of a bedside manner, but it was the, we call it the never day. [00:04:52] She said, he will never look you in the eye. [00:04:56] He will never mainstream. [00:04:58] He will never say, I love you. [00:04:59] Never say, I love you. [00:05:00] Never live on his own. [00:05:01] Never play team sports, and for him, that was a big deal. [00:05:04] Yeah, that hit hard. [00:05:06] Wasn't too hopeful. [00:05:07] Wasn't too hopeful. [00:05:08] It's pretty negative for almost anybody. [00:05:10] And we didn't see anybody advocating. [00:05:13] We didn't see anybody with a platform like ours having a conversation nationally about a child with autism. [00:05:20] What did it feel like to you witnessing an expert telling you there really wasn't a future for RJ? [00:05:26] Oh, it was bleak. [00:05:28] Cried a lot. [00:05:29] And then I rolled up my sleeves and I went to work, right? [00:05:31] Like I cried and I moved past and I was like, you know, I got my Norma Ray on and I was like, okay, I'm about to go advocate for this kid. [00:05:38] Rodney had a little different journey. [00:05:40] And what was yours? [00:05:41] How did it change fatherhood for you? [00:05:43] Well, first off, I went in denial. [00:05:45] I didn't believe it. [00:05:46] First of all, I didn't know what autism was, right? [00:05:48] So I didn't understand it. [00:05:51] She educated herself, and I went to the mode of, I can fix him. [00:05:55] You know, let me fix my son. [00:05:57] Let me coach him. [00:05:58] Let me get him right. [00:05:59] And I was doing all the wrong things. [00:06:01] And it caused friction in our relationship, and it wasn't working. [00:06:05] Yeah. [00:06:05] So you went into this proactive crazy mama. [00:06:07] Crazy mama mode. [00:06:09] What do you actually do to be a crazy mama? [00:06:11] I tried to intervene with him, like I tried to get in his Face and just, you know, almost like, you know, like Rodney said he wanted to coach the autism out of him. [00:06:18] I wanted to mama the autism out of him. [00:06:20] And, but I got on my knees and I did something called Floor Time, which is a therapy that you do to help children with autism interact. [00:06:27] So I was just really in his face constantly and trying to, you know, pull him into our world. [00:06:33] And how long until you started to think this might work? [00:06:36] Do you have a glimmer of hope despite what the experts said? [00:06:40] There were moments, you know, with autism, it's like small wins, right? [00:06:43] So if he would react to something his sister did, you know, if he would just like, Connect with her and like roll his eyes at her. [00:06:50] We were like, Yes, he rolled his eyes at his sister. [00:06:52] Like, it would sound so normal. [00:06:53] Right, like just normal, typical behavior. [00:06:55] And then later on, when we had younger kids, little brothers, they annoyed the heck out of them, right? [00:07:00] And that kind of helped him, you know, they were like little therapists because nothing's more annoying than a little brother, right? [00:07:06] And so we would see him and he told his brother to shut up. [00:07:08] And Ronnie and I were like, Yes, did you hear that, baby? [00:07:10] Did you hear that? [00:07:12] He told him to shut up. [00:07:13] So little stuff like that. [00:07:15] But we also did, though, take him to an allergist. [00:07:19] And we wanted to discover what his sensitivities were. [00:07:22] And him and his sister, twin sister, had a very, very high gluten sensitivity. [00:07:27] Now, I didn't know what gluten was. [00:07:30] I'm like, is that something you eat, Elmer's? [00:07:32] Like, what is that? [00:07:33] So I really did. [00:07:34] And I felt so uneducated. [00:07:36] I swear I have a college degree, but I didn't know what was going on. [00:07:39] So gluten is wheat, basically, and it's in everything. [00:07:42] And we found that when he ate wheat, he was disconnected more. [00:07:47] You could see it that way. [00:07:48] You could see it like sugar. [00:07:49] You know how sugar makes your kids go on a sugar high? [00:07:52] He would go on a gluten high. [00:07:53] So we removed that from his diet. [00:07:55] We saw that helped a little bit. [00:07:57] So we just tried little things along the way. [00:07:59] I'm sure. [00:08:01] That as much as the kids affected RJ, he affected them. [00:08:04] And we teamed up with Rod, and he's good at building teams. [00:08:07] I made a little video for you. [00:11:38] And tons of vegetables, and it just cooks all day. [00:11:40] You like, you know, set it and forget it, or so they say, right? [00:11:43] And so I'm just going to pour you a little bit here. [00:11:46] I'll pour this. [00:11:46] Yeah, there you go. [00:11:48] Why is this so fast? [00:11:49] Chicken pot pie, right? [00:11:51] So every kid loves chicken pot pie. [00:11:53] You get the store bought crust already made and you just put it in and you pull, you can actually put some of this in here. [00:11:59] And cook it up. [00:12:00] But I actually like to put the chicken pot pie stuff in there. [00:12:03] Love it. [00:12:03] So simple, so easy. [00:12:04] This is to die for, by the way. [00:12:06] I was up all night making that. [00:12:08] Okay. [00:12:08] That's how she saves time. [00:12:09] Now, speaking of saving time, meatballs. [00:12:12] I mean, what kid doesn't love meatballs? [00:12:14] All my kids do. [00:12:15] Even a big kid. [00:12:16] Even my 50 year old child loves meatballs. [00:12:18] And here's meatballs. [00:12:20] And you just have to freeze them because then you just take them out of the freezer and you have an instant meal. [00:12:24] And every kid loves spaghetti and meatballs. [00:12:26] We do turkey, we do beef, we do it all. [00:12:29] Kids help you make them or you make them on your own? [00:12:32] One of them likes to cook, the rest of them just like. [00:12:34] To be served. [00:12:36] I can't imagine what Roman is on that list. [00:12:38] Yeah, that's Roman. [00:12:39] Now, the other thing we got to do, of course, is take the kids to activities, and sports is a big part of that. [00:12:43] And you got to have a halftime tip. === The Miracle Child Story (04:56) === [00:12:45] Maybe, Rodney, you can help us with this. [00:12:46] With all those things going on in your life and heading off to watch these kids perform, what makes it all happen without you forgetting 50 things? [00:12:53] Well, you got to store the car. [00:12:55] So you got to have the car ready for everything. [00:12:57] And first off, you got to make sure you have a chair, right? [00:13:00] So you have something. [00:13:00] Holly's got to be comfortable. [00:13:02] You know, the queen's got to be comfortable, so we got to have that. [00:13:05] Cardinal in gold. [00:14:35] When I first heard about the bravery of eight year old Chrissy Turner, I immediately wanted to meet her and her amazing parents. [00:14:41] She's the youngest person to have undergone a medical procedure of its kind. [00:14:46] This little girl is a real fighter, and she's an inspiration to us all. [00:14:50] It's a story making headlines around the world. [00:14:53] A startling medical case that's gone viral and has everyone talking. [00:14:58] An eight year old girl diagnosed with breast cancer. [00:15:04] In October, after Chrissy Turner pointed out a lump in her chest to her mother, she was immediately taken to the doctor. [00:15:12] The family was stunned. [00:15:13] When a biopsy revealed secretory breast carcinoma, an extremely rare and slow growing form of breast cancer that affects only one in a million. [00:15:23] Breast cancer is almost unheard of in children, making this third grader's case even more exceptional. [00:15:30] In early December, Chrissy underwent a single mastectomy. [00:15:35] Now her family and the world wait, watch, and hope this courageous eight year old can go back to the business of being a kid. [00:15:44] Chrissy's parents, Annette and Troy, are here. [00:15:51] Take me back to the moment you first heard that Chrissy had breast cancer devastation, total collapse. [00:16:00] Disbelief, fear? [00:16:03] Absolutely. [00:16:04] It was terrifying. [00:16:05] I mean, your whole world flashes before your eyes, you know, or rather stops, stands still, and you just realize that, you know, things are never going to be the same. [00:16:18] So, how did you tell your beautiful eight year old daughter that she has breast cancer? [00:16:24] That was the toughest thing. [00:16:26] The look on her face was like she'd seen a ghost. [00:16:29] And the only cancer that she'd ever dealt with is she lost her grandfather to leukemia. [00:16:34] And daddy lost all his hair. [00:16:36] She was only one year old when he was diagnosed. [00:16:39] So for her, she just has really, you know, bad memories of cancer, obviously. [00:16:48] So the good news is a couple weeks ago, Chrissy underwent a mastectomy on her right side. [00:16:52] The surgery went well. [00:16:54] And the other good news is that young, beautiful patients like your daughter have 100% survival rate, pretty much. [00:16:59] Yeah. [00:17:00] Which is so fabulous, although she had to go through a lot to get there. [00:17:07] So. [00:17:08] Y'all want to meet Chrissy? [00:17:11] Come on out. [00:17:13] Chrissy, come join us. [00:18:12] Yeah. [00:18:13] You get to play with her toys now? [00:18:15] Yeah. [00:18:18] You get to wear her clothes once in a while? [00:18:20] Yeah, she did give me a few shirts. [00:18:27] What's these balloons you've been playing with? [00:18:29] What are they about? [00:18:30] Well, I got a gift just hanging, well, tied onto my doorknob. [00:18:38] So we decided to write messages on our balloons. [00:18:43] I wrote some of my favorite things. [00:18:46] What kinds of favorite things did you write in the balloons? [00:18:49] So I wrote one message and then I wrote like velociraptor balloon. [00:18:57] Velociraptor? [00:18:58] Yeah. [00:19:00] Make it be deadly, you know. [00:19:03] But you're not scared by velociraptors, you just beat cancer. [00:19:07] Is that right? [00:19:08] Yeah. [00:19:09] What's left? [00:19:09] All right. [00:19:11] So I want to ask you if you want to say something to all the Folks out there who are wondering how you stayed so brave in the face of all this. [00:19:24] I just looked up to God and my family and just hung on and I spent time and just kept my mind off of it. [00:19:42] You know what you said that's so beautiful and so true? [00:19:45] You just hung on, people just came. [00:19:48] All you gotta do is hang on, and people will come. [00:19:51] Hope you never forget that. [00:21:51] Well, you know, everybody wants that magical super berry that they just pop that and cancer doesn't have a chance. [00:21:56] But unfortunately, it takes a daily, deliberate choice. [00:22:00] You want to infuse known cancer fighting compounds into breakfast, lunch, and dinner. [00:22:06] And it's that compound effect of all these working together that don't give cancer a chance. [00:22:10] So, we're going to give everyone three tips. [00:22:12] The first one, the way you're going to cut your cancer risk, has to do with vitamin D and your breakfast. [00:22:16] Why are folks so excited about this? [00:22:17] And what's the actual tip? [00:22:19] Okay, so vitamin D is like this sexy newcomer, even though it's been around well since we were born. [00:22:24] But it's the sunshine vitamin, and it is important for everyone to listen up because over 40% of Americans are vitamin D deficient. [00:22:33] And if you could optimize and harness the power in vitamin D, adding to your breakfast things like portobello mushroom, And eggs, the D's in the yolk, so eat that. [00:22:42] You literally can cut over 16 different types of cancer, including well known pancreas, breast, ovary, prostate, lung, and skin. [00:22:51] Vitamin D. All right, the next way to cut your cancer is now, for a lot of you guys, if you're especially glass half full kind of people, is that half full or half empty, guys? [00:22:59] What do you think? [00:23:00] Hard to tell. [00:23:01] With cancer, it's scary no matter what. [00:23:02] So you've got a way of finishing out the glass. [00:23:04] Yes, you've got to power up that water with green tea. [00:23:08] So I love green tea, honestly, truly. [00:23:11] The evidence is so strong about green tea and cutting cancer risk, particularly breast cancer risk, I know can be cut in half by three cups of green tea a day. [00:23:21] All right, the final rule, the number one rule, is a food rule around cancer. [00:23:25] It has to do with anti inflammatory foods. [00:23:28] So, what foods do we have to actually incorporate into our diets besides the chickens of the world? [00:23:33] Right, so lean meats are good, but you want to eat things that spring up naturally out of the ground. [00:23:37] Green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale, you top that with some peppers and tomatoes and Anti inflammatory walnuts, and basically all of those toxins and free radicals in your body don't stand a chance against this cancer kicking dinner. [00:23:51] Cancer kicker? [00:23:52] I'm gonna. [00:23:53] We're always one upping ourselves between the heart surgeon and the cancer surgeon, so this is my little surprise for you all. [00:23:59] This is my little secret. [00:24:00] I don't want you to forget to use spices to turn any meal into an anti inflammatory meal. [00:24:04] So, this is a tip that I've just learned, but it's becoming very popular. [00:24:07] You take curcumin, right? [00:24:08] That's a compound in turmeric. [00:24:10] Looks like this. [00:24:11] Beautiful color. [00:24:12] The American Cancer Society argues that you mix that with a teaspoonful of olive oil, a little bit of black pepper to help the absorption. [00:24:18] And you can add it. [00:24:19] You can do it the way Christy's doing it as well. [00:24:21] Put it on your chicken, for example. [00:24:22] Put it on any protein you're having, and it makes it into an anti inflammatory meal. [00:24:26] Now, I want to ask one more favor of you. [00:24:28] We've been talking this season a lot about the problems with narcotics being prescribed to patients, which is I think giving rise to a lot of the addiction. [00:24:34] You know, the number one cause of accidental death in Americans under age 50 is now related to addiction. [00:24:39] And a lot of that's because people are getting narcotics in the doctor's office. [00:24:42] You're part of a campaign that doesn't use narcotics. [00:24:45] Please explain this.
