Why You Have No Energy and How to Fix It Now | Dr. Oz | S7 | Ep 160 | Full Episode
Dr. Tirone Lodog reveals how 4M+ women with chronic fatigue worsen symptoms via cortisol drops from hot showers, carb-heavy breakfasts, and excess coffee, while B12/folic acid (Swedish study-backed) and "wake-up water" offer relief. Patrice Washington’s 50-30-20 rule exposes miscategorized wants—like a $1K lipstick debt trap—as Adira battles $20K in credit card debt, prioritizing high-interest repayment. Jen Brown’s pregnancy weight-loss strategy blends USANA MySmart shakes (high-protein, fiber-rich) with child-bonding workouts, while research shows babies manipulate smiles for adult reactions. Energy, finances, and even infant psychology collide to redefine modern wellness and priorities. [Automatically generated summary]
Dr. Lodog says our morning routine may be making the chronic fatigue worse.
The real reason you're so tired and the foods that help you fight fatigue.
And it truly wakes you up.
Plus, help to stop living paycheck to paycheck.
Where do I start in order to get control of my finances again?
The number one thing you have to ask yourself to get real about your money.
Coming up next, we'll save lives today.
We are ready to get healthy.
No answers to your real health questions, whether it's energy, stress, or even money.
Today I've got the real answers that you're looking for.
We're going to start with the real reason you have no energy.
Could it be chronic fatigue?
Today, the new symptoms you may not know about.
The number one money question you need to ask to get real about your finances is also on today's show.
And then, the best and easiest way to save $1,000.
Literally, you guys have a thousand bucks.
But first, you wake up exhausted.
Even after a good night's sleep, you have a hard time focusing on even simple tasks.
After a day of errands, does it take you a full 24 hours to recover?
If you said yes to just one of these questions, you may be one of the more than 4 million women who fall on the chronic fatigue spectrum.
And according to Integrated Dr. Tirone Lodog, your morning routine may be making your symptoms actually worse.
And you know, you think that's not possible, it's just happening.
How are you?
So, what's the difference between chronic fatigue that we're talking about for now and just being exhausted?
Right, so a lot of people are just tired.
I mean, you know, life in the 21st century is busy and stressful.
But people who have a chronic fatigue syndrome or spectrum, it's really a fatigue that is long-lasting, usually six months or longer.
And it's not accompanied by just fatigue.
Women also experience headache, brain fog, muscle aches.
They may even experience flu-like symptoms.
And this goes on for months.
And it's not relieved by getting a good sleep.
So we just asked pretty typical questions you might ask someone diagnosed with chronic fatigue.
So many women are diagnosed.
I think it's a number of things.
One is we don't understand what causes chronic fatigue.
We don't understand it.
I think it's probably a combination of environmental factors, your genetic and some sort of biochemical imbalance.
We have a simple test.
You can't go in and we can't do a test and diagnose.
And the third part is that just a lot of treatments that we study, the results are inconsistent.
Some women do better.
So it's made it's made diagnosed.
It's treated.
But I also say that many of my patients over this has been really hard because they feel like when they go in and the doctor says there's nothing wrong with you, they don't feel right.
They don't feel it feels like they're dismissed.
And that's something we're really trying to fix.
So Dr. Lodog said morning routine making the chronic fatigue worse.
Look at a typical people.
This is a typical morning.
You get out of bed, take a long shower.
Then you fill a typical breakfast to give you the fuel to start your day.
Finally, you pour yourself a huge service filled with coffee.
You can sustain that first rush of energy your day.
But what if every did made your chronic fatigue worse?
What if you made it worse?
Isn't that crazy?
I think we're doing everything.
So what's wrong with Katie's morning routine?
Well, there's a number of I would say the bath that she was into in the morning.
I want to remind you who have chronic syndrome.
A lot of people have seen that in the morning a healthy person wakes up, their hormone cortisol goes up, and that's up in the morning, you feel and things.
In women with chronic already low, you take a hot and you get that rapid cooling experience afterwards drops that cortisol, which is already low on somebody with chronic fatigue.
Worst thing you want to do is take a shower in the morning.
What should you do?
Katie do.
Mistake.
You take a hot shower thing in the morning.
Correct thing to do is take a bath.
Why is a bath important?
Well, and I would say the part of that is when.
You take the bath at night, right?
So I want you to get out of that hot shower in the morning or a hot bath, and I want you to think of taking the bath at night.
Now, many women with chronic fatigue feel imbalanced.
And so hot showers can make them feel even dizzier.
So a bath is very nice.
And you can throw some essential oils or Epsom salts or other things in that bath.
But take it at night.
It'll help you sleep and it'll help you relax.
All right.
Next part of the morning routine that can be making you a little bit more messed up with your chronic fatigue is you have a carb-heavy breakfast as we saw.
So how are the breakfast choices that we're making contributing to our chronic fatigue?
Wow.
People have got their breakfast way wrong.
I mean, really.
Caramel lattes, sugary cereals, bagels.
So all of these are really designed to give you quick energy.
So if you're feeling really tired in the morning, you're going to want something that kind of revs you up.
The problem is what goes up quick, your blood sugar, goes down quick.
And so you may feel good for the first hour, 90 minutes, but by 10 o'clock in the morning, 9.30 in the morning, you're going to be feeling headachy.
You're not going to concentrate as well.
Big mistake.
So what should be done by Katie?
Take a look.
Mistake number two.
You make a typical breakfast high in carbs.
But the correct thing to do is eat a breakfast that's high in protein.
Protein for breakfast, maybe even only protein for breakfast.
Heavy on protein.
So think of Greek yogurt with some berries and nuts on it.
Eggs are not bad for you, despite what people say.
Eggs are great.
But then you could also have something like apples and cottage cheese.
I mean, there's a number of ways that you can get more protein in, but I promise you, if you ate better protein for breakfast and save your carbs for night, you would go through your day with more energy.
All right, and the final mistake in our morning routines is that we rely on coffee to energize us.
Most people start the day with coffee.
Why is this a particular problem for chronic fatigue, folks?
Well, you know, there's nothing wrong with having a cup of coffee.
She's not having a cup of coffee.
She's got like a whole jug.
I mean, and I think that's what a lot of people do.
They overdo the coffee.
Caffeine has a long half-life, meaning that in the body, it sticks around for a long time.
And even though you took your last cup at 10 or 11 o'clock in the morning, you may not realize it, but that caffeine's still in your system at night.
So you really want to limit yourself to one cup of coffee in the morning if you're going to drink it, or ditch it all together.
So what does Katie do instead?
Take a look.
Mistake number three, you fill up a thermos with coffee to energize you throughout the day.
But what you should drink is herbal tea.
Tea instead of coffee.
They both have caffeine.
I guess herbal tea doesn't.
Herbal tea does not have it.
They're technically called tisanes, right?
But nobody knows what a tisane is.
An herbal tea that's not caffeinated is technically a tisane.
And I think people think of these as just relaxing.
If you had a great cup of ginger tea in the morning with a little lemon, I mean, it really stimulates you, wakes you up.
And don't forget, ginger has a lot of compounds in it that reduces inflammation and helps ease some of those morning aches and pains.
I love ginger.
I love ginger tea in the morning.
Toussain?
Toussaine.
Has anyone heard of a Toussain before?
No, zero for 200 here.
So green tea, black tea, white tea, those are all from the same plant.
And those are technically, it's from the tea plant, right?
So chamomiles, peppermints, gingers, and those, those are not technically teas.
They don't come from a tea plant.
I have a new scrabble word.
There you go.
Energy Boosters That Work00:08:20
No matter what your fatigue level is, when we come back, Dr. Lodog has the fatigue fighters that she swears by, and you will see it.
Coming up next, we tested them out.
Energy boosters that Dr. Lodog says truly work.
Restore your body, to nourish your body.
Whether you eat it, drink it, or spray it on.
The best fatigue fighters to increase your energy.
Coming up.
Jennifer Garner tells all.
Have there been times when you feel like you just can't connect anymore?
Her secret to looking so good in her 40s.
You're never gonna get it.
And your inspiring new movie.
There is something really beautiful in the story about the purity of faith.
Then meet the real life family.
Jennifer's new film is based on.
It kept me up all night just thinking about the mother's plight.
That's coming up tomorrow on Dr. Oz.
Dr. Little Dog is back with her real fatigued fighters that worked.
How do I know?
Because I've asked audience members to try them and report back.
The Deana Whitney are both joining us.
We're going to give you commentaries on these as we talk about them.
So first up, we want to make B vitamin foods a constant in our diets.
Explain to folks all this new breaking news on B vitamins and fatigue.
Right, well, first, I just want to remind everybody that according to the Centers for Disease Control, we have 30 million Americans in the United States that are frankly deficient in B6, 18 million Americans that are deficient in B12.
These are huge numbers.
And these B vitamins are very important for us for mental thinking and for physical energy.
And there was a study recently done in Sweden that actually looked at women who had chronic fatigue syndrome.
So not just chronic fatigue, but chronic fatigue syndrome.
And found that those who had been using B12 in the form of injections, as well as folic acid, actually had significant improvement in their fatigue.
In this country, I worry that because we're not checking for B6 and we don't usually check for B12, that some women who may be having fatigue may just be low in B vitamins.
So walk us through the typical foods that you might want to, you all remember, by the way, you know, you used to get B12 shots, maybe little kids.
So a lot of the medications that we give, anti-reflux medications to treat the symptoms, medications that we use for diabetes, they actually cause more of this B12 deficiency.
So the foods we should be eating need to be adjusted accordingly, and we have some other tips as well.
Right, and I do, I think your point was really good.
Metformin, the medication for diabetes, lots of medications that shut down stomach acid because stomach acid is needed for you to absorb B12.
Okay?
Those are the problems.
But the nice thing is that there's a lot of foods that you can eat that are rich in many B vitamins.
So fish.
Fish is a great source.
Salmons and tunas.
If you don't like to eat animal products, there's miso and mozzarella cheese.
Nutritional yeast and marmite, which is another kind of yeast, are also very good sources of bees.
I love Greek yogurt, especially in the morning.
It's high in protein.
And if you get a good cultured yogurt, you're going to get all those good probiotics.
Sunflower seeds, and of course, you may consider taking a B12 supplement if you're over 50.
You take one of these medications we're talking about, or you're a vegetarian.
So I don't like those B12 shots, although when we go to my father, my wife's family, they always get these shots.
You line up like little sheep getting our shots.
And then I have to give the last shot to my father-in-law, who's also a doctor for the last one.
But they are sublingual forms of B12, right?
And these, again, for people who can't absorb the vitamins in their stomach, which is for many reasons very common, you can get these sublingual taps.
Or this is a spray now.
You can literally hear, oh, you're like, ah, ah.
See how nice in red color?
I got a sweet.
You missed my mouth.
I missed my mouth.
I don't do this for a living.
I'm good with the scaffold.
Please go with the shots.
I did miss your mouth.
Very embarrassing.
Now you look like a clown.
I've got all these red lights on your side.
Thank you.
So, Nanita Whitney, did you guys try the B12?
I did try it.
Actually, I believe you're supposed to spray it under your tongue and let it sit there for about 20 seconds and then swallow it.
Listen to the doctor.
There you go.
So I did try it over the weekend, and I did see a little bit of a difference, but I wish I had more time to try more because I feel like it would make a bigger difference for me.
Yeah, and I also tried the B12, but it was the one under the tongue, which is the drops.
It was a cherry flavor, so it's actually good because it had a little taste to it.
Did I get a lot of energy from it?
Maybe if I also took it as long as, you know, maybe three days, but you know, it tends not to have worked for me.
Well, go ahead.
Well, I think what you really want to remember is that vitamins are not like drugs.
They're intended actually to be taken over a long period of time to sort of restore your body, to nourish your body.
So I wouldn't expect dramatic results in a few days.
But it sounds like you both had a pretty good experience.
And really, the spray can go under, it can go anywhere in the mouth because it's going to be absorbed.
The pills really do need to go under the tongue, and you let those just sort of dissolve and melt.
Yeah, most importantly, don't swallow the pill.
It doesn't help you there.
Right, right.
Next up, we're going to talk about a fatigue fighter that I think will help everybody.
It's the wake-up water that Dr. Lilo uses in her clinical practice.
Why wake-up water?
Well, you know, I love this because when you go to the spa, you get these kinds of waters, right?
I mean, they're always putting things in water.
I'm a big fan of water, and a lot of people just don't like the way it tastes by itself.
So you can chop up watermelon and chunk it up, just put it in chunks and put it in your water.
Cucumbers, again, great source of B vitamins and vitamin K, a lot of good antioxidants, and it also contains lignans.
Lignans are substances and foods that help our body fight cancer and inflammation.
One little note on cucumbers is that when you buy conventional cucumbers, they're generally waxed.
And most of the time, this is a synthetic wax.
I usually will peel the cucumber if it's a conventional, because I don't like all the synthetic wax, or buy organic.
And then you can use the skin too.
Limes, great source of vitamin C. Of course, that's where we get the old term lime from, right, for sailors because it was what was used to prevent scurvy.
So when you chop these all up and put them in your water, let them sit overnight, and then you want to drink it.
How much do you want to drink?
The Institute of Medicine says for women, 91 ounces a day.
For men, 125 ounces.
You're talking like 11 cups to 15 cups of water for men and women.
It's a lot of urine.
About 20% of that.
It is.
About 20% of that comes from your food, but the rest of it comes from this.
Now, women, for you, I just want to say there's been several studies that have looked at even mild dehydration in women.
It makes you not able to think as quickly, makes you irritable, causes you fatigue, and gives headaches.
By the time you're thirsty, you're already 1 to 2% dehydrated.
1 to 2%.
It's already too late by the time you're thirsty.
So I want you to really start drinking that water.
And do what, you know, berries, limes, cucumbers, whatever you have, drink a lot.
We got one last little tip over here.
Some of you hide in your purse, a fatigue-fighting scent.
Yes.
Well, so there's rosemary and peppermint here.
I know you love rosemary.
I'm a peppermint fan, and I keep this actually in my purse.
And when I was on call, when I'd come home from call after being at the hospital all night, I would take this and put them on my wrists, and I would inhale it because peppermint wakes you up.
I mean, it truly wakes you up.
And studies have actually shown that it increases your ability to do complex problems, math, et cetera.
So this is a great tension fighter.
I love these, these little essential oils, and they're great to keep in your purse or your pocket.
Did either of you try this?
I actually have a peppermint roll-on stick.
One of those aromatherapy, like, you know, oil, and it's really nice to put it on your pulse, on your little pressure points, pressure points.
Yeah, pressure points.
I love it, and it does wake me up when I sleep.
It does.
You use it.
I do use it, yeah, a lot.
Wonderful.
I've got energy washing both of you.
Excellent.
Yeah.
I'm going to post all these bonus fatigue fighters on DrOz.com.
We'll be right back.
Get Real About Spending00:14:39
Coming up next, we're switching gears.
Help answer the number one question you need to ask yourself to get real about your spending habits.
It's definitely what you want to aim for.
Essential tips for financial success.
This is really critical.
It seems so obvious, right?
A two-step plan everyone can use.
It's that new pair of shoes you just had to have, or the Panti Latte necessary to survive this afternoon.
Then the cupcakes, of course, for the school's bake sale.
And don't forget the new smartphone to replace your crack version.
Now, all these things bring me to the number one question you need to ask to get real about your money.
Are you able to separate the wants from the needs?
Money guru Patrice Washington is back with her two-step plan to help you separate just that, the wants from the needs.
Why is that so essential for financial success?
You know, actually, separating wants from needs is one of the most important parts of financial success, but it goes overlooked because people think that it's simple to do.
The reality is a lot of us disguise some wants in the midst of our needs, and when we're trying to budget, we miscategorize.
So let's get to the first step.
It's the 50-30-20 rule to separate emotions from money.
Explain why this is so critical.
It's so critical because you get to see really what you're doing with your money.
So 50% of your money should technically be going towards your needs, 30% towards the wants, and 20% towards savings.
If that's out of balance, then you have a problem.
It's a lot for savings.
Can people do that?
20%?
It's a good place to aim.
If you have to start somewhere, right?
So if you have to start at five and work your way up, that's fine, but it's definitely what you want to aim for.
You save 20% of your money?
I save more, actually.
You do?
Show off.
So Kathy wrote me on Facebook asking for help breaking down her budget.
So Kathy, Chloe, join me, if you don't mind.
How are you?
Hello.
Hi, Dr. I love calling in folks who so innocently post on Facebook, but that's how we get our guests.
So how many times a week do you go shopping?
Twice.
Twice.
And do you ever feel like you're buying extra food, things you didn't have to buy?
Oh, sure, of course.
I go in for 10 items and I wind up with 20, maybe 100.
No, I'm trying to undervise it, but a lot.
I buy a lot more than that.
More than you planned.
Maybe that's bad.
All right, so I want you to pay close attention, you and everybody else at home.
I'm going to show you how to do this.
Just ask a key question.
Want from needs.
Come on back.
All right.
So the first, stay with us.
What the heck?
Come over here.
Yeah.
Okay.
So these are the needs.
All right.
If you don't mind, please walk us through because this is really critical.
It seems so obvious, right?
Why is it the number one most important question to ask?
You'll figure this out in a second.
Go ahead, Patrice.
So our needs are those basic things that we need to survive, right?
So there's food and shelter, your clothing, of course, transportation, insurance, and things like childcare.
You don't have a choice about these things, right?
Now, let's move over here to sort of the place we get into trouble.
These are the wants.
These are the wants.
This is where we typically get out of hand, and that goes beyond the 30% that we talked about.
And your wants include things like eating out, entertainment, travel, gifts, morning coffee.
That's a big one.
And the fun clothes.
So, not what I need to go to work, but my party clothes on Saturday night.
Are you clear on the difference here?
Absolutely.
All right, okay.
Have a seat in the audience then because I want to go through one last little bit.
This 20% budget fight that we're having, right?
The 20% budget fight around savings.
Is it really possible to get 20%?
I actually think it's achievable.
It seems like it's not, but if you think about it, it is these issues.
Right, absolutely.
And if you actually go through the first section and cut some things down, then you can now contribute it to this section, actually.
But your retirement savings, your emergency fund, and even paying over and beyond the minimum payment on any debt that you have, any credit cards, student loans, that actually counts as a part of your 20%.
All right.
Let's do a little workshopping with the audience here.
Okay.
It's the final step, but it's an important one.
We want you to list three ways, just three ways, all three ways that you think your purchase will benefit your life.
Pick any purchase you're thinking of making right now.
Can we see your hands?
Oh, you sat in the front row.
Where's the there?
And next to the mic.
It's perfect.
So, what's your name?
Asia.
Asia.
Yes.
So, Asia, explain to us what you want to buy, and then just do the exercise.
I'll let Patrice push you a little bit.
All right, well, I would like to buy pretty much everything.
I like to shop as well.
I love clothes.
But anyway, if I would have to buy anything, it would have to be a new cell phone.
A cell phone.
Yes.
So it would have to be a new cell phone.
Yes, mine is very old.
Okay, so is that a want to you or a need?
I would say a little bit of both, if that makes sense.
My phone is old, it has a crack in it.
It's not a necessity, but I want a new phone because it's old and I want a prettier phone.
So I actually want you to give me three very specific ways that this will benefit your life if you got a new cell phone today.
Well, it would be faster.
Also, it would be prettier, so that would make me happier.
And the camera also would be better, and I love to take pictures, which would also make me happier.
Okay, so did anyone hear a need in any of that, right?
So prettier, maybe faster.
I need to be happy, though.
You need to be happy, but do you need to, does your happiness based on a new cell phone?
No, there's other ways that you can find happiness, I'm sure.
And that's the point, you guys.
A lot of people think that I need this.
This is something that I have to have.
But once they really start to say it out loud, which is why I love that exercise, you heard for yourself because you chuckled while saying it.
And we all heard that that's not really a necessity.
And sometimes we make our decisions impulsively based on what we feel like we need.
And really, it's a want.
And you can have it if you plan for it and save for it.
That's what I plan on doing.
That's why I still have the old phone.
I was convinced, Asia, by the way.
Thank you.
I love your advice.
Thank you very much.
You can find more of Patrice's money advice in her new book, Real Money Answers with your Black Power.
Coming up next: do you get a sinking feeling each month when the bills pile up?
Find out how you can lower your debt and money anxiety.
Who doesn't want to save $1,000?
I do.
The best kept money secrets you haven't tried to instantly save money.
Coming up next.
Jennifer Garner tells all.
Have there been times when you feel like you just can't connect anymore?
And her inspiring new movie.
There is something really beautiful in this story about the purity of safety.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Welcome back.
Today, a real action plan for real life.
We're going to show you how you can save $1,000, even when that seems impossible.
Financial planner Nicole Lappen says it can be done and it's easier than you think.
Thanks for being here.
All right, so I'm turning it over to you.
You got a couple tips.
Yep, who doesn't want $1,000?
I do.
We all do.
Think about the subscriptions that you're paying for.
Are you really using that gym membership?
What about all the magazines you get?
Do you really read them?
And your cable bill.
Are you watching all those premium channels?
So the first thing is try to cut the premium cable.
Boom.
There you go.
What do you normally spend on premium channels?
$1,200 every single year.
And instead of that, think of an alternative.
You can rent a movie online.
There are a lot of unlimited subscription companies.
So rent that movie for eight bucks, let's say, a month.
That gets you a check to that company for $96.
Way less than what we were paying before.
And that gives me, I love giving a check to myself, absolutely, of $1,104 whopping dollars.
As you promised, without a lot of pay.
I promise.
Over $1,000.
The next way you can save and save $1,000 this year is to set up an auto-transfer savings account.
Please explain what that means.
So look, Dr. Oz, if you don't see it coming out of your paycheck, it doesn't feel as bad, right?
And then there's no risk that you're going to spend that money anyway.
So take a certain amount, put it in an interest-yielding savings account.
There we go.
Bada bing, bada boom.
You don't even have to think about it.
So how much money every week should we auto-transfer to the savings account?
To make $1,000?
$20 a week.
That's like a night out with friends.
That's like, you know, just a date night.
And I guess you won't be spending it as much because you don't have a card to spend against it.
But if you think of it that way, you also have to be able to make interest that makes up for the fact that you're not spending the money.
So how do you find the bank that gives you the best interest rate for that savings?
You know, it's nice to have a community bank.
They know your name.
That's all good.
But typically, the bigger banks give you better interest rates.
And the online banks, I mean, seriously, do you really need the candies at the banks?
Go online and you will get the best rates possible.
They're not paying branch fees, so they can probably pass it on to you.
In theory, in theory.
All right.
You can also save $1,000 pretty quickly by stop charging the small stuff.
Now, I want you to walk people through this because people always underestimate how important that small little expenditure really is.
Yeah, so the small stuff causes big problems.
Let's talk about a typical purchase at a department store.
Some lipstick.
I know that's your color, Dr. Oz?
It is my color.
It's $10, right?
If you don't pay that off after late fees and interest rate charges one month, that $10 lipstick costs $1,150.
And then let's say you keep procrastinating, life happens.
I get it.
That $10 lipstick after six months costs $116.
This is crazy talk.
Then after one year, if you continue to not pay, if you continue to kick it down the road, that $10 lipstick costs $320.
And then after three years, the $10 lipstick costs $1,290.
I gotta say, we spend $10 for a cup of coffee these days.
Yeah.
And we don't realize how fast it adds up.
And this is how you save $1,000 and get out of debt fast.
But, but that said, my next guest says it's impossible for her to save $1,000 because she's already $20,000 in credit card debt, in debt.
So Adira, how do you run into $20,000 of in-the-hole credit card debt?
Well, being a single mom and my income not carrying me long enough, one credit card after another credit card, just to survive.
So saving anything is virtually impossible in my mind.
So I don't know what's going on.
When was the last time you saved money?
You guys put money aside so you'd have it for later in your life.
Never.
Never?
No.
I don't know how.
I was never taught.
So I don't know how to begin to save anything.
So how can you hear everyone else who wants to make a big dent in that $20,000 hole that they've got?
That's daunting.
It's totally daunting.
I get it.
There are three main steps though that perhaps I think you could do right away.
Number one, prioritize to pulverize.
So not all debt is created equal.
If you have a little bit of money and you're putting it toward that debt, like you're saving with some of those tips we just told you about, start with the credit cards first.
That's the highest interest rate and that's gonna snowball the fastest.
Okay, the second step is come up with a schedule.
Look, if you don't stick to a schedule, it's like a regular diet, you're only hurting yourself.
Think of something that's manageable, but not too comfy, cozy.
I get it, debt is not comfy, cozy.
And you really got to nip it in the bud.
The third suggestion is to smoosh it all together.
Have you ever heard of a balance transfer?
No, ma'am.
So this is where you take all those credit cards and put them all together into one credit card.
The thing you should be mindful of is that that is a higher interest rate.
So it's all together, but you have to be ready to pay that off in one year or that interest rate skyrockets.
I think it's small things done right every day.
And the fact that you said something is very important to me, you said I was never taught how to do it.
That's the big problem we face in America.
Most people think money's their enemy.
They think money owns them.
Yes.
And most of us should realize that if money can buy something that's not something that we can ever get again, like the health of a child or our time, then we should never trade.
We should control our destiny, and that's yours to do.
Thank you.
So these little tips will come in handy, but you've got to add them all together to get those thousands of dollars every year to keep you ahead.
And you're not alone.
Nobody will learn this stuff in school.
When we come back, Nicole is taking your most burning money questions that you've been too afraid to ask.
Stay here.
Next, Nicole is back with the best advice you've ever heard.
She's got the answer to all your financial concerns.
Your most pressing money questions.
Answer.
Find out what she has to say.
You don't want more debt than that.
I don't want more debt than I already have.
We're back with Nicole Lappin, and she's tackling your most burning money questions that you've been too afraid to ask, at least until now.
So who's got questions?
How convenient.
Go, take it away.
How are you?
How are you?
Good, thank you.
Take it away.
I just want to know what's the right way for me to negotiate a raise with my boss without her saying no.
That is an awesome question.
And it's not a sorority if it's a woman.
She's not going to be easier on you just because she's a woman.
7% of women negotiate their salary.
57% of men negotiate their salary.
So when you're going in to speak with your boss, remember that salary isn't the only form of compensation.
Think about the overall compensation package.
So maybe if you're a mom, you ask for a day working from home.
You ask for a day to leave early.
You ask for a more robust health care package.
You ask for a free parking pass.
Sometimes that stuff is more valuable than a bump in base salary.
Perfect.
Thank you.
You'll get something out of it one way or the other.
Go ahead, take it away.
Hi.
Hi.
Is that a deal breaker in a relationship?
Absolutely.
I have spoken to so many men and women who start relationships and see that their partner, their potential partner, has a boatload of debt.
They're like, listen, I have my financial life together.
I'm out.
Here's the thing.
When we're in the dating world, we have more superficial breakers than money.
Hair color, height, weight.
I mean, debt should be one of them.
Thank you.
Why wouldn't it be a deal breaker?
That would be a problem for me.
It would be a problem for me, too, yeah.
Because you're taking on that debt.
Yeah, absolutely.
So that affects your life.
Diary, you were speaking to us earlier.
Is that a problem for you?
I don't want any more debt.
Weight Loss Secrets00:09:00
Which one?
Let's say.
You don't want more debt than you can.
I don't want more debt than I already have.
That's right.
Sorry.
You know, this country has created a belief that we all have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, right?
Which happiness is health to me.
You can't do those things if you don't have money on your side.
It's one of the biggest challenges we have in America.
And I don't think you can compromise that at all.
I think it has to be a deal breaker in a relationship.
One of the two parts, you've got to get that part right.
You know, I add and subtract otherwise, but the total has to still be in a place where you're happy and healthy.
I agree.
And money is one of the number one causes of divorce, not talking about it.
One last question.
Go ahead.
If I can't pay off my bills, how can I ask for help?
You know, asking for help is nothing to be bashful about.
There is no shame in asking for help.
So there are a couple of places that you can look, but you want to look for a reputable organization.
The National Foundation for Credit Counseling is one you can start with.
There are some sketchy ones, so you don't want to get yourself in more problems than you already have, but you should definitely look for help and they can help you set up a timetable to set up your financial life.
Nicole, thank you very much.
Thank you.
I got good news for you.
Everyone in today's audience is going home with Nicole's book, and it is called Rich and Lines with H. Because I can't say the other part.
We'll be right back.
Next, we switch it up with a busy mom who also happens to be an Emmy award-winning sportscaster.
Her secret that helped her lose weight after her pregnancy.
Find out how you too can get rid of your last stubborn 10 pounds.
Coming up next.
Jennifer Garner tells all.
Have there been times when you feel like you just can't connect anymore?
And you're inspiring new movie.
There is something really beautiful in the story about the purity of faith.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Number one question so many of you ask.
How to get rid of your last stubborn 10 pounds.
It just won't go away.
Well, one way that people are doing this is by drinking their meals.
It's a secret.
My next guest says, helped her lose weight after having a baby.
Emmy award-winning sportscaster and soon-to-be mom for a second time.
Come on out, Jen Brown.
You're not fooling around.
That's right.
How are you?
Welcome to the show.
Thank you so much.
Good to be here.
Folks may not know this, but you're married to Wes Chatham from the Hunger Games movies.
You see him out there saving lives and doing all these fun things.
And you found out just nine months after having your first child, you're pregnant again.
That is true.
Nash.
That is true.
Congratulations.
Were you surprised, shocked, happy, thrilled?
Surprise is a great word to use.
It wasn't something that we were planning.
So, you know, but we love Nash is 16 months old.
He'll be 18 months when the baby comes, and there's another boy, so they're going to be close and age.
Look how cute Nash is.
Oh, my goodness.
And they're going to be best buddies.
So, you know, obviously it was a surprise, but it's a welcome surprise.
So you gained a fair amount of weight with your first pregnancy, like a lot of moms do.
Sure, yes.
45 pounds, you told me.
You lost it.
You gained weight again for the second child.
What did you do to lose weight after the first pregnancy and what's your plan this time around?
Sure.
Well, you know, I try to work out throughout both my pregnancies, so I'm going to continue working out.
But what I learned with my first pregnancy is it's all about what you put in your mouth afterwards.
And if you want to lose that weight, I mean, exercise is important, but for me, I found it was really about watching those calories.
And so, you know, that for me was the biggest, you know, distinguishing thing for me to lose that weight was really watching what I was eating.
So share a little secret with me.
What was the key to actually doing that?
It's so easy to say sitting on stage here, but it's hard to do when you're on your own.
Certainly, certainly.
Well, a friend of mine always had these shaker bottles, and I was talking about how I was having trouble losing these last 10 to 15 pounds.
She said, you've got to try these USANA MySmart Shakespeare.
And so I was like, okay, you know, I was a little leery because I've tried shakes before.
And she says, you know, you're actually going to be supplementing meals for it.
And so it was great.
You know, they taste amazing and they make you full.
I think that was the most important thing for me: feeling full because you literally are replacing two meals.
You have breakfast and lunch, and then you have a sensible dinner.
And it really worked for me.
And it helped me keep the weight off after I lost the baby weight.
So you didn't find it tough to replace a meal with a shake?
No, you know, I was skeptical because I had tried some shakes before.
And interestingly enough, when I tried those, I would have a shake for breakfast.
And then had breakfast.
Exactly.
And I was eating extra calories.
And that's not what you want to be doing when you're trying to lose weight.
But no, with the MySmart shakes, I'd have one in breakfast.
I actually have to remind myself to take one at lunch.
I was like, oh, I need to eat lunch now.
It's time for a shake.
They were that feeling.
I think it's the fiber in them.
You know, they've got great nutrients.
Come on over.
Let's actually talk about what the benefits are of using some type of a drink in order to get past a meal.
And this is important.
Now, Yusana, you all know, is a trusted sponsorship partner of the show.
And these MySmart shakes that they make are important for a couple reasons.
Come on, correct me if I get anything wrong here.
First of all, they have lots of protein in them, important for weight loss, but they don't have any added sugars.
That I love.
So bounce the sugars away.
They have the fiber you spoke about.
Again, it's a key combination.
Protein and fiber together do a bunch of things.
The fiber moves through the intestines, allowing the vitamins and minerals, once you've drunk them through, to be very gently absorbed.
And it's a complete protein.
So you get all of what the body needs for its daily requirements.
So you're not missing anything if you don't have a meal.
And that's why you get that big smiley face, right?
It's my smile.
It's your smile.
Because you actually get what you need and take some of the thought process.
And some of the tricks that folks use don't sustain them long term.
This is, I think, a better idea because it gets you where you need the big.
So show us how you actually do that.
All right, we're going to, this is, I love the interactive part.
So first you're going to start with your protein base.
So the MySmart, they have three options.
They have plant, soy, or whey.
I'll take whey.
Okay, whey, perfect.
So you're going to add it to 10 to 12 ounces of water into a blender.
And you're going to do two scoops.
Let's see if we get that off.
You're going to do two scoops of protein if you want to lose weight.
You're going to add three scoops if you want to maintain your weight.
Okay.
Okay, so we'll add the water here.
Now, you're going to, now this is my favorite part.
So they have a vanilla base.
So it already has a natural flavor.
But the one thing I, when you're drinking shakes and you're drinking them a lot, you don't want to fall to flavor fatigue, I like to call it, right?
So you've got here five different boosters that they have.
It's flavor enhancers.
And so what that does, we've got dark chocolate, they've got cappuccino.
I mean, some amazing flavors that you can add in.
So you pick one.
I picked chocolate for you.
Chocolate.
I heard you like chocolate.
You heard right.
That's right.
And then last but not least.
You know what?
I hear someone over there.
I'm not going to bring out little Nash here.
I can't stand having a beautiful child like that cry.
And I think Nash wants one of these MySmart shakes.
All right.
I've got little guy here.
He's going to help us.
Can you say hi?
You know what?
We're going to finish baking in a second, but in the meantime, I know what he really wants.
Yep, there you go.
You knew it.
I can tell.
I know.
Now he's happy.
He's your way to a man's heart.
All right.
Now, and Nash is, I must like it because he's smiling and happy.
Good guy.
If Nash likes it, everyone will like it.
All right, so anyway, you know, you put the chocolate in there, you get the base, the taste, and then.
And last but not least, this is optional.
Again, flavor fatigue.
You want to switch it up.
I like to add berries, fruit.
You can add a protein booster, throw it in the blender, mix it up.
And it's so great because, like I said, you don't get, you don't get sick of drinking the same thing over and over because you have so many different options.
There's yours.
There's mine, Adam.
Cheers.
Kid, make sure you like it.
I'm going to taste it too.
It's a full flavor.
It is very good.
And it tastes like a milkshake.
I mean, that's what I liked.
I like milkshakes.
These are also beneficial for pregnant women, I should say, and nursing moms generally.
I used to nursing.
Yes.
Because, you know, it helps balance out all the micronutrients and macronutrients you need in your body.
You want both together.
All right, now, exercise is a big part of this, which is actually why Nash is here trying to be here.
So, show me how this works.
I have my own version of Nash.
So, you know, for me, it was: I wanted to work out.
I want to incorporate the exercise, but obviously, when you've got a little one, you want to spend as much time with them as possible.
So, I found this is a perfect weight.
So, we'll start with this.
He's a weight?
Well, he's pretty heavy.
So, we're going to start with squats.
So, you go here, and you're just going to go up, right?
Squat.
Now, if you want to incorporate full body, do a little pressure.
Oh, my goodness.
That's his favorite part.
You can do calf raises, you can do trunk twists, bicep curls.
I love it all.
The more important part is getting the smile on his face.
I love the smile on both your faces.
It's the best.
Congratulations.
Little kiss down.
I want to thank our sponsorship partner, USANA.
You can go to droz.com right now to enter for a chance to win one of a thousand of the MySmart Shakespeare that Nash likes so much.
Getting the Smile On00:02:02
What about the audience?
Oh, we've got to give the audience smart.
You sure?
Absolutely.
All right, the audience is rolling home.
All of you are going home with a my smart shake as well.
We'll be right back.
Are there dangerous chemicals in your clothes?
This is a sampling sent to the lab Oz Investigates.
We're going to give you the results.
They're important.
See what we uncovered lurking in your favorite fashion.
So, what did you find, Elizabeth?
Plus, filmmaker Spike Lee opens up about a film close to his heart.
What gave you the strength to be part of the story?
The movie starring Katie Holmes that will change your mind about bipolar disorder.
That's coming up on Thursday.
Share a touching video that went viral with over 50 million views in just a few days.
It captured the moment when a baby with a rare disease that impairs his vision sees his mother for the very first time.
Thanks to a new player, a brand new pair of glasses.
I want you to meet Leopold.
Look how cute he is.
He's four months of age.
Because of his disease, he had never seen his mom before.
He was finally given a new pair of rubber glasses made just for him.
They work just like a glass.
Now, doctors measure exactly what he needed to correct his vision.
And watch his smile.
It corrects his astigmatism, his nearsightedness, takes him a minute to adjust, and then the magic.
He sees his mom for the very first time.
Who doesn't love that?
A smile and baby.
Now, as you watch cute little Leopold there, brand new researchers found that babies actually time their smiles to maximize their mom's reaction.
The babies want the moms to smile back, and they can tell they see it coming.
And guess what?
Turns out the same works for us as adults.
So next time you catch someone's eye smile, do it.
When you see their eye and you're welcome by them, just smile.
Just like Leopold, you might just get a smile back and it's worth every effort.
