Heart Healthy Mediterranean Dishes 00:13:40
Could you have a heart attack during sex?
Can you remember that pain, that bam, and it sit up your chest?
After sex, if you're feeling lightheaded or dizzy, those could be warning signs.
The information to double your chances of survival.
Plus, foolproof pantry prep.
You have a lower rate of dementia if you eat diets like these.
Rachel Ray shows us how.
The point of these is high protein, high fiber, nutrient dense.
Coming up next...
Ready to say some lies today?
Yeah!
I love you, Dr. How much do they make your mouth water?
Now, these are all dishes from the heart healthy Mediterranean diet.
And today, you're going to learn how to make them in record time because the queen of the kitchen is here.
You wonder who I'm talking about?
I'll give you a clip.
Who says yummo or the niche?
Or my favorite, E-V-O-O.
Guess it out.
You know it.
That's right.
Rachel Ray is here and she's giving us her foolproof pantry prep to simplify and automate your Mediterranean meals, even on your busiest days.
So Rachel, my good friend, come on out.
How are you?
You're very sportive today.
I like this.
I got my sneaks on.
So I gotta say, I grew up partly in the Mediterranean because I'm Turkish.
Right.
And you grew up in Blustry upstate New York, which is about as far away as you can.
And Cape Cod.
But my grandpa lived with us.
My grandfather was one of 14 children, Sicilian men.
My best friends, my grandpa took care of me when I was little.
And my best friends were the Runzo boys and my grandpa.
The Rinzo boys.
Yes, and my mom was the firstborn of 10 in a large Sicilian family, obviously.
So, you know, for us, we ate kale before kale was cool.
And our diet was the Mediterranean diet my whole life.
I had absolutely no friends in kindergarten because my lunch smelled so bad.
It was sardines and onions on stale bread.
But I love sardines and onions on stale bread.
I have a picture of you.
Let's put this up.
People are going to love this.
This is you eating your sardine sandwich.
You are cute, little.
I laughed and laughed and laughed when we found that.
It was so cute.
I mean, and literally, I lived on sardines, kale, all the stuff that people call trendy foods now.
You know, and the reason I love the Mediterranean diet is not just because of the taste.
I love the fact that it lowers your risk of heart disease.
That's right.
I love the fact that it helps your brain function.
And because of all that, you live longer.
That's right.
You get to be 84 and look beautiful and have everything intact.
And be able to have a conversation.
Exactly.
You have a lower rate of dementia if you eat diets like these.
I still love when my parents give me a hard time.
It means they got it.
They're sharing.
That's right.
That's right.
I'm afraid of my mom when she's 84.
She could take me.
But here's the problem that I'm hearing.
And I'm not sure you're hearing from your guests, but I suspect as well.
Edwin likes the Mediterranean diet conceptually, but they're not sure they can actually follow it.
They don't quite know how to make it an automated part of their life.
So you, even in upstate New York and in Cape Cod, you can figure out how to do it.
So today, Rachel and I are going to do something that we've never done before.
We're going to simplify how to stock your pantry.
So all you got to do, ready?
Okay.
I don't want to knock anything over.
You give this to you in your pantry, add a couple fresh ingredients, then someone you're hungry, and you're golden.
Right.
I really believe that the building blocks are very simple.
And there are quicker alternatives to these.
Like in my family, we always bought dried grains and beans, but you soak them overnight and you have to have the time to cook them.
Of course, you can get all of these in cans.
So your quick go-tos when you come home are olive oil, of course.
Actually, like I said, this is...
Yes.
The most essential ingredient.
Yes, not surprisingly, her favorite ingredient, I think probably mine as well.
So this is number one on the pantry list.
Number one has to be olive oil.
Plus, it's practical.
Right.
It prevents your body from fighting against itself.
It makes a lot of sense.
So if we start with olive oil as our staple, come on over here.
Let's talk about the dollar stretchers.
All right, now but I don't want you all thinking you can't afford the Mediterranean diet.
You can't do some shishy thing.
We're talking about white beans and canned tomatoes and faro, simple stuff.
Right.
Grains, all grains, when you buy them in the grocery store, they're going to cost you more in a package than they would in bulk bins.
So start in your bulk food section.
Whenever you're shopping for any ingredient for whatever diet you're following, always shop high and low and never in the middle.
The middle, those are the slotting fees that are paid.
Your best bargains will be on the top and the bottom shelves.
And you always compare unit price, not the price on the package.
Compare unit of measure price.
Now, dried beans and grains, okay, pearl barley, faro, chickpeas, white beans, borlotti beans, all of these you can get an equivalent in a can or even partially cooked in pouches.
If you have very little time, you can pay for that convenience.
You can still get very inexpensive canned beans if you don't have time to cook them.
But the point of these is high protein, high fiber, nutrient dense.
All of these things can give you great nutrition for no money.
If you're going to buy canned tomatoes, buy the best price.
If you're going to buy Italian tomatoes, this San Marzano thing that everybody's crazy about, make sure you're not getting ripped off.
Tomatoes are great for you, great for your body, great for your mind, but make sure you're not getting ripped off.
So many companies will trick the consumer by using San Marzano in the name of the product, but if you look on the back, if it doesn't say DOP or made in Italy, it's not.
Right.
It's a domestic tomato that you're simply being overcharged for.
But once again, at a high level, this can already be in your pantry.
These are your go-tos.
You come home and you always have something you can make for dinner between grains and beans and olive oil and tomatoes and garlic.
You can make a million meals out of that.
Medically sound.
Medically sound.
Now, after that, you got to get some fresh ingredients.
So Rachel's list includes just all the colors of the rainbow.
I think that when it comes to the produce department, you don't need a multivitamin if you eat the rainbow.
And these are foods that activate your brain power, dark leafy greens, especially, kale, spinach, all of your dark, spicy greens, escarole.
One of our first meals as children was minest, beans and greens.
Those were our first two building blocks, white beans and escaroler kale soup.
That was one of your very first meals as a child.
Your parents are having wine meanwhile.
Oh, we were having wine too.
That was my first word.
It was in my bottle.
My grandpa would put water and a little bit of his wine in there.
Everybody thought I was a sweet child.
I was really just a little tipsy.
Beets are another one.
And you know this, the beet greens you get, but the beets themselves, beets, colorful peppers, so sweeter hot peppers, beets and dark greens, they're all activated by the olive oil.
They're fat-soluble nutrients, right?
It helps you absorb it, the lycopene much more powerfully, which is again why, I don't know who thought about it.
It's brain power.
Yes.
Right.
And one other point of interest about you.
You eat your salads before or after your meal.
After.
After.
Always after.
Yeah, it's a digestive thing, quite frankly, but we would put them out on the table at the same time, but we all eat our salad after dinner.
I love it.
She knows all this stuff.
Really, really menetrating.
All right, last part.
Again, the must-have part of the diet, I think, is proteins and the healthy acids.
And we don't get the proteins in the Mediterranean diet the way most of you get them from.
So please walk us through this.
You know, another important source of protein and an important, this is a place where I would spend an extra few pennies at the grocery.
I like blue or green shell or brown shell eggs.
Why?
Because white shell farm factory egg, the yolks are pale in color.
The shells are thin because the animals are not healthy.
And this is another thing that your brain activates better if you're eating a lot of eggs.
And eggs are another great source of protein and nutrients for not a lot of money.
So eggs and beans and grains, huge part of our diet.
And essential in our diet, essential is fish, seafood.
Sardines, my favorite sandwich in life.
Fresh seafood.
Again, good fats, good for your body, and all kinds of acids.
Vinegar and lemon juice, we use a ton to break down animal fats when we do eat it.
One other question.
Sardines, which I happen to love as well.
Are your mercury levels okay?
I don't know that I've ever checked them.
How do you do that?
We could do that later today, but I'll tell you why I bring it up.
My mercury levels are so high, the State Department of Health wrote me a letter.
Are you kidding?
Yes, because I ate a lot of fish.
I found out that sardines and Chovi's have almost no mercury because they're young fish.
So I moved from big fish to small fish.
I love sardines.
I put them on the grill.
I roast them in the oven.
Pasta con sardees, one of my favorites.
Stale bread.
And sardines makes me cry because it makes me think of my grandpa.
I remember the little Rachel eating her sardine sandwich I'll never forget.
All right, coming up, Rachel's entire Mediterranean diet pantries, which is on Dr. Calm.
We're going to put it to use because she's going to put her Mediterranean pantry into her favorite low-carb pasta fix.
This is going to be fun.
Yeah, you have not seen this before.
The Atlanta Child Murders.
Wayne's told me he's killed no one.
Is the right man behind bars?
All nuise.
That's coming up tomorrow.
I'm back with Rachel Reign.
She just gave us a foolproof way to prep our pantries for my favorite, which is the Mediterranean diet.
And now she's putting all those yummy and healthy ingredients to use with, get ready for this, everybody, get ready.
Wait for it.
A low-carb pasta fix, which is what I know you all want.
What makes it so perfect is a low-carb fix.
You know, we are making a high-protein, high-nutrient faro pasta from a rich grain, right?
But here's the fun part about this dish.
This is based on one of the first gifts I gave you for the holidays.
Wine, beets, beet greens, faro, right?
All of these are superfoods.
And I gave it to you in a gift basket because of all the times he has literally saved people's lives of my loved ones.
But what's great about this is this particular dish is cooked partially in red wine.
Oh.
It's an ancient Tuscan technique.
And you parcook your faro or whole grain pasta in water, then you drain it, and then you finish cooking it in shallots and garlic and the reduced red wine.
Now red wine's good for you, right, Donald?
Yes, in moderation.
Drink this much.
So you parcook this, you have cooked.
You half cook it, and then it finishes cooking literally in the wine and stains it beet red.
So I've got two beets peeled for you here.
I've got purple gloves to match the beets.
So that exactly, so that your hands won't get stained.
When you bring beets home from the store, you wash the greens, the leafy tops.
These you can turn into salad.
In this case, we're going to welt them into the dish.
You roast your beets in tin foil.
Don't do anything to them.
Throw them in the oven.
When they're done, you use a paper towel to peel them, and the peel just wipes right off, just like that.
And I put a huge pack in, and then I have them for weeks.
They stay for weeks in the fridge.
How many minutes in the oven?
About 40, 45, depends on the size of the beet.
The bigger the beet, the longer it'll take.
So you bring this back up to a boil, you reduce the wine, you add the shallots, the garlic, and then as soon as you're done with the beets, give me your beets.
Just kidding.
I knew you didn't trust me.
All right, now throw the beets in.
Now, at this point, we start wilting in the greens.
That's where you're getting all of your great nutrients in this.
So you'd wilt these in in small batches.
And right down here, it looks like this guy did.
Oh, look at the color.
Isn't that gorgeous?
Isn't that gorgeous?
I mean, it's sexy.
You can turn any day into a delicious, nutritious Valentine when you serve this up.
Look at that.
Oh, my goodness.
It's gorgeous.
It's got all your dark, leafy greens.
It has your beets.
It's good for your brain.
It's good for your love life, too.
It's cooked in wine.
It's very sexy.
I like that.
A little bit of mint and parsley and pistachios.
Mint, parsley, pistachios, and a little bit of our shaved ricotta salata.
I'm going to turn you into a Sicilian yet.
I'm going to turn you into a Sicilian, Oz.
A little balsamic.
We've got our vinegar.
We've got our dark greens.
We've got our beets.
We've got our whole grains.
We've got our vegetables.
This is a perfect dish.
This is what you want.
It's perfect in so many ways.
So come join us.
So we have a little RR here.
Okay, get it?
R. RR, Rachel Ray, RR.
Oh, very funny.
Work with me.
Work with me.
Very funny, very funny.
Amazing Sundance Coffee 00:06:19
Oh, bear always.
Nicely done.
So there's this thing called the Feedback Festival.
Oh, yeah, that's coming up in March.
Yeah, let me brag on you a little bit.
This is the hottest ticket at the South by Southwest Conference, which you all know is that huge conference they have.
Right, it's film and technology and music.
And food.
And food and music.
My husband has a rock band, The Cringe, and every year we invite dozens of bands to participate.
We have three stages that go all day long during South by Southwest music.
It's kind of like my Christmas in March.
And we offer free food, of course.
I don't know what's free.
I'll come.
Yeah, it's free.
People line up for over a mile.
It's unbelievable.
Well, they're lining up to see you.
Oh, thank you.
I love you.
Rachel Ray, you can find regular recipe on doctorize.com.
We'll be back with a big, big surprise.
Stick around.
She's with us.
Rachel Ray is here today.
We got a surprise for her, but you'll find out what it is when we come back.
Is your smartphone taking over your life?
They are designed to be a tick team.
We have your digital detox, all new Oz.
That's coming up on Wednesday.
I'm back with my friend Rachel Ray, and she's been giving us her foolproof food hacks that are not just delicious, but they can make you healthier.
And no matter how many times we have been on each other's shows, you never cease to amaze me, to surprise me with all the wisdom you have, your basic know-how about living life, the wetland.
Today, I want to give you a little surprise because one of her favorite things has become one of my favorite things.
You have no idea what I'm talking about, do you?
No, but somebody just handed me a cup of coffee.
So does it have anything to do with coffee?
Well, let's take a look for everybody because I recently hit the road and discovered a place that has a very special place in your heart and now mine.
Take a look.
So I'm here at Biddy and Bowes in Wilmington, North Carolina.
This coffee shop does more than just brew the good stuff.
Biddy and Bowes is known for its unique staff.
Almost everyone employed there has a disability, ranging from Down syndrome to autism to cerebral palsy.
When founders Amy and Ben discovered that up to 70% of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities do not have jobs, they decided to do something about it.
Our two littlest both have Down syndrome.
We just saw people older than them who had disabilities, when they finished high school, there's nothing for them to do.
It doesn't occur to people to hire them.
So we said, we're going to affect this unemployment rate because one in five people in this country have a disability, sure.
And yet only 20% of them are employed.
And we just thought that's unacceptable.
So what we realized in having this coffee shop was what we could do is the typically developing people to come in, come in and have an experience.
There's some psychological reconditioning, I think, that goes on.
And they leave changed.
And they go out into the world and they go, hey, you know what?
People with disabilities might be able to work not just in coffee shops, but in all kinds of industry.
Plus, you train young folks to go out and do other things.
They have conference, they can make it happen.
Inside, I met Biddy and Bo, who the shop is named after.
Me and Bo.
So Bo, Bo's 13.
The bow of Biddy, Biddy and Boa, right here in the fly.
He makes you coffee for me, what do you think?
Yes.
And some of the Biddy and Bo's crew.
On the count of three, one, two, three, four.
The coffee shop is a staple of the Wilmington community, and its story has touched people's lives all over the country.
Since my good friend Rachel Ray also loves Biddy and Bo so much, I decided to do some recon while I was down there to find out her favorite brew.
Now, what is her favorite thing?
Rachel's favorite coffee is Sundance.
Rachel does have good taste.
Nice pick.
So you guys have amazing.
You have the Biddy and Bo, Sundance coffee right here.
It looks really good.
Now listen, Rachel made them her talk show's official coffee supplier.
Amy, the owner of Biddy and Bo's, was recently honored, listening carefully, as a CNN hero.
Take a look.
She's amazing.
Isn't that a great line?
It's the greatest quote ever.
And you know, I just think that literally shows how one person in one family can change the world.
And that's why her quote there is so meaningful.
Have you talked to her yet?
I haven't talked to her since she won the award.
She called her today from the office.
You call her?
We love her so much.
We do.
Why don't I just make it a little easier and bring her out right now?
Oh, shut up.
She's here.
Come on up.
Amy, come on out with Ben.
My Amy!
Did you like see that you said I was talking about my TV?
It was amazing.
Oh, I'm so happy you guys.
Oh, God.
Thank you for the surprise.
How are you?
How are you?
Come test him to me.
What a lovely surprise.
So it's Rachel.
Since you were just about to tell me how proud you are of them, take it away.
Well, I think that your quote really speaks to the power of one person in one family.
And to see all of these corporations now turning around and bringing in huge workforces that were untapped before, but when you go in and you support something that pays you back emotionally like that, it's amazing how quick that change comes.
So if I can, ask Ben and Amy, how do you deal with the fear that the beautiful beings you brought into our existence may not be embraced because of disabilities that they have as parents?
I think you have to realize that if you have a child born with a disability or that gets a disability during life, that that's your child from start to finish.
That a disability is a normal part of being a human for one out of five people in this country, almost one out of five in the world.
And your child's not broken, right?
If I can say something to all three of you, you're the kinds of folks who glue us back together.
God bless you all.
Thank you for bringing them into my attention.
I would never have known.
We're so glad.
God bless you all.
If you make sure we're every day in the ratio ratio, you all love her.
Check your local listings.
We'll be right back.
What a wonderful job.
Could Sex Cause a Heart Attack? 00:12:18
I've told you before that sex can help you live longer, but could it put you at risk for a fatal heart attack?
Up next, could you survive heart attack sex?
How to double your chances of survival if this happens to you?
Stay with us.
Hey, now I've told you before that sex can help you live longer.
But it could be putting you at risk for a fatal heart attack.
Heart disease is leading cause of death in men and women.
And for many of you, sex may make a heart attack more likely.
Today, it's the life-saving information you need to know.
Could you have a heart attack during sex?
And if it happens to you, how do you double your loved one's chance of surviving if the heart stops beating?
It's the potentially deadly event no one wants to talk about.
And it can happen while you're getting intimate.
Cardiac arrest during sex.
So how can sex kill?
A study from the Journal of the American Medical Association reveals the answer.
If you're having sex infrequently, as little as just a few times a year, you're almost three times as likely to suffer a heart attack after sex.
And a brand new study shows that fewer than one in five men survive cardiac arrest during sex.
But many of these deaths may be preventable.
Today, there is something you can do to double the chances of survival in a loved one.
Joining me is a cardiologist from my own hospital, New York Presbyterian Columbia, Dr. Sonia Tolani.
So you have a busy practice.
You're seeing a lot of patients who are seeing this breaking news and are worried about having a heart attack during sex.
What are you telling them?
Well, I tell them the same thing as people who are going to exercise, because sex is really a form of exercise.
It makes your heart work harder.
And so we worry about people who have risk factors for heart disease, like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, people who have had a family member have heart disease at an early age, and especially people who don't exercise at all, who are inactive and sedentary.
The other group of people we worry about are people who are already having some sort of chest pain in their everyday life, because for us, that's a sign that maybe they have a blockage in the artery or there's some sort of heart disease that's not been diagnosed yet.
And we really recommend that those people actually have a stress test to make sure that their heart is healthy before they start having sex.
So I decided to bring this alive for everybody.
I described your heart on sex.
Many of you probably haven't thought about it in that context, but it's worth doing.
So here's a little animation.
I've got the heart beating behind me here.
And just to orient you a little bit, these blood vessels in the front of the heart, right there, they bring life-sustaining nutrients to the heart muscle.
Now, if I take you inside the heart and I look at what happens to the actual blood coming in from the body, goes into the right side of the heart and out to the lungs.
What do the lungs do?
You might remember this from when you were a kid.
Someone taught you probably somewhere along the line that the blood gets cleaned by the lungs, comes back into the heart, and then gets pumped out to the rest of the body, right?
But interestingly, the heart muscle is still basically just a muscle.
Now, when you're sedentary and sitting around like we all are right now, the heart's beating it maybe 60, 70, maximum 80 times a minute.
You're just sitting around doing nothing, right?
But when you engage in sexual activity, that heart rate starts to go from 60 up towards 100, and it keeps going.
It goes to 120, and then 130, 140, 150, up to 170 times per minute.
It's pounding away in there.
And when it's going this hard, this muscle, like if you're going like this with your hand really fast or any exercise a lot, it starts to get tired.
The muscle needs more blood.
Maybe go back to the outside of the heart.
Now the heart's pumping away.
These blood vessels might not be able to supply enough blood to the entire heart.
And interestingly, if you have a blockage here, which is not a problem normally, and then you have to have sex or do aggressive exercise, that blockage becomes important.
And then you have, boom, a fatal event because when the heart doesn't have enough muscle, it can start to quiver instead of beat, and you go to a place where you can't keep up anymore.
And this is a problem.
This is why we are now noticing that more and more Americans are having problems having heart attacks while they're having sex.
But you're supposed to have a good time, right?
You're supposed to feel excited during sex.
So how do you know if you're actually at risk for having a heart attack?
So Dr. Tahani, walk us through what the risk factors are.
What are the symptoms people should be aware of?
Sure.
So anytime after sex, if you're feeling pressure, pain, or tightness in your chest area, your neck, or your jaw, that is abnormal and could be a sign that you're having a heart attack.
And while during sex, it's normal to feel short of breath.
Afterwards, you should not find it difficult to breathe or to catch your breath.
Feeling lightheaded or dizzy, feeling like you're going to pass out, again, those could be warning signs like in your video that your heart's going too fast and that you could be having a heart attack.
The most important thing, though, for everybody to know if you take one thing away is that if your partner passes out after sex, it's vitally important to call 911 because an early response offers your loved one the best chance of recovery.
We'll come back to that theme in a little minute, but I want you to meet a couple that's kind of agreed to join us.
John and Valerie are here because John suffered a heart attack three years ago.
And they have been terrified to have sex ever since.
How are you?
Thanks for being here.
Thank you, Dr. Os.
This is an awkward thing to talk about, so I appreciate you making yourselves available for this.
Fear is something that affects just about everybody.
They've had any major medical problem, but it's especially true of the heart because it can happen quickly.
So what are the fears you've been having since your husband had a heart attack?
Well, when he had the heart attack, I was very, it was a very scary situation.
And you know the heart races, Dr. Oz, when you get excited.
And I certainly didn't want to be responsible for taking him out of here.
Thank you.
So how do you respond to that, John?
Well, it was scary for me as well.
You remember that pain, that first time when it hits you, as you said, that bam in the center of your chest.
And so you just try to be careful because you don't want to have it happen again to you.
So let me tell you a little story.
So I still operate, and it's a little experiment that I witness over and over again.
I talk to the family after the surgery.
Everything's going great, right?
And they both ask about everything under the sun, except can they get intimate again?
I don't know what it is, but people don't want to ask that question.
So I'll start walking out the door and I'm just wondering if they're going to stop me.
Once in a while they do.
Usually they don't.
And so I turn back at the last second, pop my head back in, and say, by the way, you guys can get together again if you want.
Wow.
And they both go, hallelujah.
They high five, they move.
So there's some rules of thumb, though.
If we've already fixed your heart, obviously you're safe to go again.
Your doctor can tell you that.
But if you're having sex infrequently, and listening carefully if you're at home right now, if you're having sex infrequently, it can increase the chance of you having a heart attack up to three times.
You got to use it or you'll lose it.
Wow.
You got to stay active.
So my advice to everybody is once your doctor says it's okay, go ahead and have sex frequently as much as you can, frankly.
We know that's good for you too.
And if you're not going to have, now they're happy, they're rushing the stage.
But if you can't be sexually active for whatever reason, then just be active, period.
An extra hour of physical activity, just once a week, listen carefully, just extra hour, once a week of activity, like sex or walking around the block, both work, can cut your heart attack risk by nearly a half.
So there's no need to be embarrassed here, guys.
Go out there and have fun.
And for the women out there, I think it's an extra reason to participate.
Yes.
All right, so when we come back, there is life-saving info you can't afford to miss if your loved one does have a heart attack during sex.
How you can double your loved one's chances of survival if it happens.
You want to see this.
Stick around.
The Atlanta Child Murders.
Wayne told me he's killed no one.
Is the right man behind bars?
All news.
That's coming up tomorrow.
If your loved one had a heart attack during sex, would you know what to do?
Today, the information to double your chances of survival if this happens to you.
Now, first off, you got to call 911 immediately.
You got to get everything going, get those experts into your home, get to the hospital, all that stuff happens.
So call 911.
Second, you got to chew aspirin.
325 milligrams.
And why do you chew it?
Because it gets in your bloodstream faster and can slow down the chance of having that heart attack.
You actually, when you're having your heart problem, is that what you did?
Exactly.
I was in the pulpit, I felt this pain, and one of my sisters went out and got me an aspirin to start chewing to MES catalog.
EMS cat too.
Good.
So someone called 911 while someone got you the aspirin.
Exactly.
All right.
Now, here's it.
If the heart stops beating, you got to go one step further.
Now, if you're in the pulpit and you collapse, there's a good church floor there they can do CPR on.
Yes.
But come on over with me because that's not what happens when you're in bed.
There's a brand new study, by the way, revealed that when your loved one's heart stops beating during sex, only one in three of you are doing the thing that can double the chance of surviving in cardiac arrest, which is CPR.
So come on over here.
I got Lynn from the American Red Cross.
You can't worry about it.
Where are you going?
You got to help too.
Richard, John, come over here.
So here's the deal.
When someone has a problem and they're in a bed, the bed's soft, right?
So that's one of the reasons we think people aren't doing CPR if they have a problem in bed.
But even if you're not having sex in bed, people have heart attacks in bed quite a bit because you spend a lot of time in bed.
So Lynn, why is CPR so important first and then walk us through the steps to actually do it if someone's in bed?
Well CPR is important because you're actually manually pumping the heart for them, keeping the blood circulating throughout the body.
So doing chest compressions, you're keeping the oxygenated blood flowing to the vital organs, especially the brain.
So that's why it is so important to know these steps so that you can act quickly and save a loved one.
All right, so Vari's lying in bed, John's next to her, all of a sudden she notices John doesn't look right.
What does she do?
Well, first thing you have to do is look for responsiveness in breathing.
So you're going to tap and shout.
So you're going to tap, tap, tap.
John, John, tap, tap, tap.
While you're looking at the body to see if they're breathing, you want to see if the chest is rising or falling.
If they're not responding and they're not breathing, then step two is you do have to move them onto the floor.
So you're going to slide your arm under the shoulders.
You want to protect the head and neck the best you can.
Now, normally we would bring it right onto the floor, but for today's practice, we're going to bring it down here.
Okay.
Okay.
Lie the body gently on the floor.
Okay.
The reason we have to be on a firm surface is because we need that resistance because we have to get all the way to the heart to pump it.
Step number three is push hard and fast.
So, you with me?
Yep.
You were going to start chest compressions.
So you're going to take one hand with the heel right in the middle of the chest.
Take the other hand over it.
Lace your fingers.
Now make your arms as straight as possible.
Keep the shoulders directly over the chest and pump hard and fast.
Now we're going to count together because it's really important.
You have to compress about 100 compressions per minute.
So you want to count like one and two and three and four.
Okay, so ready and go.
One and two and three and four and five and six and seven and eight and nine and ten and eleven and twelve and thirteen.
Now, let me ask a question.
Question for each of you.
When do you breathe in the mouth?
Well, we're doing hands-on CPR.
That's important.
Even though you're married, if you have not been trained in how to do the breathing CPR, don't bother.
It actually is not worth it.
It hurts the survival rates.
Really?
So you just press.
Am I clear on all this?
And the second question, John, for you, I should ask you this question.
When does he stop?
You said when does.
When should you stop doing the compressions?
When I start breathing.
Yeah.
I like that.
The compressions go until someone tells you to stop.
Mila's Surprising Scalp Secret 00:09:38
If the patient wakes up, they'll tell you.
Otherwise, the AMS will get there.
But you don't stop pressing until someone comes to tell you you're okay to stop now.
Things are okay.
We're clear?
Clear.
You guys go out and get busy.
But enough time in this year.

That's coming up on Wednesday.
There's a fungus among us.
In fact, it's a type of fungus that we all have right now.
I'm talking about malazizia, and it can cause dandruff.
That's what that stuff is.
If you've ever had dandruff, you know how annoying and embarrassing it can be.
Whether it's just one dainty little flake of snow that you can easily brush away or what seems like a blizzard, the cause is usually the same.
It's a fungus.
And we all react differently to it, but the key is knowing the right way to treat it, and that's what I'm going to help you with today.
I've asked dermatologist Dr. Elise Lefkowitz to join me.
She's here on behalf of my trusted sponsorship partner, Head and Shoulders.
Thank you for being here.
Thank you for having me.
So I just graphically illustrated dandruff, but who gets it?
Why do they get it?
Explain this to us a little bit.
Sure.
So as you mentioned, dandruff is caused by a common fungus that's found on all of our scalps and deep in the hair follicle.
And when this fungus mixes with oil in our scalp, it causes irritation.
And if you have a sensitive scalp, it's even worse.
And this irritation then can then lead to dandruff.
And to answer your other question about who gets it, one out of every two people will get dandruff at some point in their lives.
We know it's most common in African Americans, followed by Caucasians, and then the Asian population.
One out of every two, half of us.
Now there are different degrees of dandruff, I'm gathering, because we don't all have really, really bad dandruff.
Explain that to us.
So patients with mild dandruff, they may get a little bit of an itch, maybe some flaking, some redness, but these symptoms tend to come and go over time.
They can be present one week and then gone the next.
Patients with moderate dandruff, they have more persistent flaking, maybe even a tightness to the scalp, some redness and irritation, but both of those types can be treated with a zinc-based head and shoulders product.
All right, so I want to come over here for a second.
We have a little demonstration to explain this to all.
But for many of us, when we get those flakes of snow, right, there's a little, the stubborn kind doesn't go away.
You know, what do you do for that?
As a person who's an expert in the area.
Yes, so for the stubborn kind, I recommend Head and Shoulders Clinical Solutions 2 in 1 with selenium sulfide.
Head and Shoulders is still the number one recommended brand by dermatologists.
And this specific formulation has been clinically proven to tackle those stubborn issues, the persistent tightness, the redness, the flaking.
And what's nice about this product is not only will it leave you up to 100% flake-free, it also has great cosmetic benefits.
It's going to moisturize your scalp and hair, leaving it smooth and smelling great.
You describe it so beautifully.
I was thinking you have the right metaphor.
Yes.
So I thought of something that I think you'll all resonate too.
A way of showing the difference between the stubborn dandruff and what's really going down in your scalp that makes it feel tight and a healthy scalp.
it is da-da-da, your lawn, grass.
Now, not just the grass, but the soil beneath it.
Dry soil looks like this.
You notice it's a little bit whiter, but if I open it up to really explain this to you, you'll notice that it's not just the top of the grass, which is looking not quite its best, your hair, but also deep inside you have all kinds of stuff going on.
Moist soil gives rise to moist scalp.
This is a scalp that's been treated with a selenium sulfide product.
Now, be more specific about this.
If I've got dandruff, you'll notice the hair you can sort of see it here.
You see it a little white here, but flip that down and you'll notice the soil itself is very dry.
And those flakes with the, which represent, of course, the fungus which has been drying out your scalp really is what's visible to you, but the entire scalp isn't what it wants to be.
It's dry, it's crumbly, it's itchy, it's irritated like this soil.
And the hair pays a price for that.
Now, if you look at the healthy soil, you don't have that same phenomenon.
It's not crumbling out.
You don't have a layer that's causing ailment.
You don't have the flakiness, and the hair itself looks fantastic.
So when you use a selenium-based shampoo and you treat your hair, it'll keep looking like this.
But you can also treat the hair that's not healthy, and you can tackle all those symptoms because over time, if you do feed this the right stuff, you'll give that soil what it really needs, and it'll no longer look dry, cracked, and chipped away, tight as you described, which is what so many folks with, now I'm learning, half of us with dandruff may be experiencing.
This is a pretty reasonable demonstration.
Yes, and we just, we have to think of the scalp as that foundation for our hair, just like the grass.
It's nice and green and nice and it has nice body and shiny because we've taken care of the soil.
The same with the hair.
If you're not going to take care of what's underneath the hair, it's going to show.
Yeah, you want to have, you want some real stuff, your vibrancy.
You want voluptuous hair coming out.
You don't want it, you know, embarrassingly filled with all kinds of stuff.
Okay, Rhea's been here, waiting for us for a while.
She's been suffering from stubborn dandruff.
Has agreed to test out our head and shoulders clinical solutions two in one.
Now I'm going to show them your scalp from before you started using this product.
Is it okay?
Sure.
All right, here it is.
This is before the head and shoulders.
Please describe how you felt in that photo.
I can see the bits of dandruff.
Yeah, you know, you get really insecure because I always wear my hair up because when I wear it down, you know, like you talked about the flakes that fall and that type of thing.
And so it's easier just to pull it up and you don't have to worry about that.
And what I found was the more I washed my hair, the drier my scalp got and then the worse the problem got.
So it was this revolving cycle.
Can you help us explain?
I'm just going to, I have a little camera I'll use if it's okay.
Yeah.
But walk us through what you see as an expert.
So with Rhea's scalp, first of all, you look beautiful.
Thank you.
And what you see is basically there's no redness, what we call erythema.
There's no redness between the hairs.
There's no scale.
Her hair is nice.
It has shine.
It has texture.
And it doesn't have any of the signs of dandruff.
As long as I have it, just look in your eyes there.
What pretty eyes you have.
Oh my goodness.
Oh, can I look in your nose?
Yes.
No, I'm kidding.
I'm not going to do that.
So how's your scalp feel?
It just feels really fresh and clean.
My hair is lighter.
I don't have to use a whole bunch of conditioner like I did before.
And it just feels healthier.
Does this save you time in the end?
Because you don't have to hide what's going down?
Absolutely.
I can absolutely wear my hair out now, as you can see.
And it's so much easier to do.
Less time washing it, conditioning.
I just wash it, blow it out, and go.
I think we have a happy customer here.
Yes, very much so.
So where do you find a head and shoulders clinical solutions two-in-one line?
So this product can be found at Walgreens and Walgreens.com.
You happy?
Very.
Thank you for being here.
Thank you.
Now, since you're so happy, I sense a little bit of jealousy in the audience.
You think they might want to have, because half of them have dandruff, I just learned.
You think they should have some of this two-in-one solution?
I think absolutely.
Well, thanks to my partner, head and shoulders.
My entire studio audience, you're all going home.
You're the gift card to Walgreens so you can pick up some on your own.
We'll be right back.
Oh, this little face.
Her name is Mila.
She's being called the funniest kid on the internet.

This time, she's taking on the gym.
My mom was like, hey, Mila, do we need to do?
It was like, who is it?
What do you want me to do too?
What are these people doing?
People running and not getting anywhere.
You know what yoga is?
It's honey and your face.
Yoga, everybody is so funny.
The teacher has says it's spiritual.
I think I can smell the spiritual.
People everywhere.
Taul says the gym makes beefcakes.
Well, then I'm a vegetarian.
Our love is just says, I smell this spiritual.
I don't think there's anyone out there who hadn't felt a little like that at some point about the gym.
But I have a big surprise for all of you.
Mila and her mom, Katie, are here with us on Skype.
Hey guys, how are you?
Mila, how do you know so much about going to the gym?
My dad goes all the time.
Your dad goes all the time.
Does your mom talk about it too?
Yeah.
Do they like the gym or maybe not so much?
Not so much.
I didn't think so.
Mila, do you make your parents happy?
Do they laugh when you're talking to them in the cab?
That bitch.
So can I give you a homework assignment?
I want you to make me a video.
No?
Well, this is a small little homework assignment.
You're going to get more in the future.
This is a fun one.
I'm going to ask you to make me a video that I can share with my friends on Facebook about people who spread germs, those little gooey things on your fingers.
Let me see your fingers.
Let me see your fingers.
Mila, there they are.
See, look at the tip of your fingers.
There are little germs on there.
And I want you to talk about those germs.
I think she's in.
I think she's in.
Mom, is that okay?
Yep, we'll do it.
We'll do it.
All right.
We're posting it on my Facebook page.
Mila, thank you very much, Katie as well.
Congratulations.
So beautiful.
Remember, everybody, happy and healthy.
