You've heard about the keto diet.
Bacon, cheese, fast food burgers, tremendous weight loss.
But are most people doing it all wrong?
I was feeling bloated.
A lot of people will gain the weight back.
The dirty side of the keto diet.
You haven't heard.
When you're doing dirty keto, it can lead to other health problems.
And Montelle Williams reveals how the true keto plan changed his life.
This isn't just about overcoming sickness.
This is also about preventing sickness.
Coming up next.
Y'all ready for season 10?
I love you guys!
Have you heard of keto?
Keto is amazing.
Keto is the best thing that has ever happened to me.
Kibo on keto.
I plan to stick to keto.
Keto.
On the keto diet, you should eat one stick.
You can't go anywhere or talk to anyone without hearing that word, keto.
I listen to half your relatives are on the keto diet.
The other half say they can't wait to start.
But have you ever wondered if you or your friends and family are doing keto all wrong?
Today, we have the answer.
Take a look at these photos.
They're flooding Instagram under the hashtag dirty keto.
They're saying, for example, look at this one.
It says, tacos with a taco shell made from fried cheese.
It looks good, but could you lose weight with that?
How about this one?
This one says, a plate full of convenience store snacks.
And this is really fantastic.
Even a pizza pie with all-fried cheese crust.
And they're still losing weight.
So what's the catch?
Nutrition expert and best-selling author Josh Axe is here.
Dr. Axe is going to help us figure this out.
I think a lot of us are doing keto.
Either they didn't do it the right way to begin with or they've tipped into dirty keto.
So I want you, if you can, explain to us what regular keto is and what dirty keto is so we know what we're really doing to ourselves.
Yeah, so regular keto, Dr. Oz is number one, we want to get clean sources of protein.
Wild caught fish, grass-fed beef, legumes, and beans.
And then the big part of the diet is 75% healthy fat.
Avocados, coconut, cacao, dark chocolate, nuts and seeds, flax seeds.
We should be doing loads and loads of healthy fats.
And then our 5% carbs here.
And that's part of the key of getting into keto is you lower the carbs, your body gets in that fat burning zone.
But those carbs, you want them to come from nutrient-dense vegetables loaded with vitamins and minerals.
That's really the key to doing it the right way.
This is a healthy diet no matter how you mix up the macronutrients.
Okay, what is dirty keto?
So now dirty keto, here's the surprising thing.
It's the exact same macros, but you're just getting the completely wrong food in your diet.
For instance, you know, we see this on Instagram, but your 20% of your proteins are coming from conventional beef and pork and bacon.
And, you know, a lot of your fat is coming from processed dairy and cheese.
And then your 5% carbs are coming from things like low-carb pizza that's full of preservatives and other chemicals.
So not good.
It's really dirty.
All right, so now we know dirty versus clean.
Some people own it, right?
You dive right into the dirty version of keto.
And I see those posts all the time.
You're very proud of it.
But other people have tipped in to being in dirty keto and haven't even appreciated it.
You've seen a lot of confusion amongst your patients.
What are they saying to you?
Yeah, well, one of the things I see pretty frequently, for instance, I had a patient come in and he said, Dr. Axe, I'm on this new thing called the keto diet.
And I said, hey, that's great.
Where'd you learn about it?
He said, social media.
And I said, well, what are you eating for breakfast, lunch, and dinner?
And I promise you, this is what he was eating.
For breakfast, butter, bacon, and eggs.
For lunch, he would do a bacon burger.
And for dinner, ready?
Yes.
A bacon burger.
Oh, my God.
That was his entire diet.
Was he losing weight?
You know, here's the thing is he was losing weight.
He did.
He lost about 15 pounds in 30 days.
Here's the thing, he was still sick on the inside.
He was bloated, he was fatigued, he wasn't feeling well.
I then got him on eating the real keto diet the right way.
He continued to lose weight and continued to see even better results.
Come on, I want you to meet someone.
Debbie's here because she's thinking about keto.
She sees all these delicious high-fat foods on Instagram, like the rest of us.
And you want to know a little bit more about this.
Does dirty keto work?
Is it safe?
You just told us a patient of yours lost 15 pounds, so it does seem to work.
Debbie, what does dirty keto mean to you?
What's the appeal?
Going through a fast food joint, drive-through, this is what dirty keto means to me.
It's quick, easy food that you could just take the bun off the meat and you're set to go.
So, let me walk you through some of the things I get concerned about when I hear people pull into a fast food joint, get the burger without the bun, and think they're on keto.
And a lot of you hearing about this with my fan members and yourselves, eating unhealthy food and worrying about the saturated fats, that could be a concern.
It has always been a concern.
It could be really an issue for your heart.
So, let's go inside an artery and show you what is the big issue for doctors.
Now, the arteries inside the heart, they're a passageway to life, they bring nourishing blood everywhere.
The lining is very thin.
If it starts to get thickened because you're building a plaque over time, and especially if it's inflammation, watch what happens.
The inflamed plaque is prone to this, a rupture.
It gets irritated, and that little plaque begins to pull off.
Now, you've got an open scab inside the body.
Body wants to heal that scab, it starts to put blood in there because you're inflamed, and that scab now blocks off the artery completely, so no blood can get through and feed the heart.
Same thing can happen in the brain, it can happen in other organs, leading to strokes and heart attacks.
But if heart disease feels like something way off in the future, well, don't worry about that because you're losing weight, you're feeling good now, right?
While eating a diet full of pork rinds, I hear you.
This doesn't seem like it's an urgent issue, but denying yourself the micronutrients, the good stuff in food, could be affecting your body right this minute.
And I want you to introduce someone that I care a lot about, one of my producers, Sasha, who has discovered this the hard way.
I know, my God.
If I could brag on Sasha for a second, a wonderful mother, wanted to lose some weight, went on dirty keto about four months ago.
We've been hearing about it, we've been watching her on Instagram, and that's why I've been able to identify what you're eating.
How much weight did you lose?
33 pounds in about four months.
But when I first started the keto plan, I was all in doing it right, eating the healthy fats, but then life happens.
And then I started going for the shortcuts, going on Instagram, seeing that you can, you know, fry up some cheese or eat some bacon, do the pork rinds.
I'd never had pork rinds before, and I thought, oh my god, I can have this on keto.
So, even though I did continue to lose the weight, I was feeling more tired.
I was feeling bloated, even.
And I just noticed that I needed to kind of like switch back and get back on the right track.
Dr. X, concerns about pork rinds and a lot of other things that she's posting, by the way.
Go check her out.
Oh, yeah, check out my Instagram.
I'm eating the bacon, the pork rinds, because I'm on the go and I'm running fast.
But on Instagram, they're like, these are keto-friendly, keto-friendly, so then I get excited.
Yeah, well, I think, you know, one of the things to know is that some of the symptoms you're talking about, you mentioned the bloating, the lack of energy.
Those are symptoms of what we call keto flu, which is really common.
And that can happen even when you're doing the keto diet the right way.
But typically, the symptoms are less severe.
When you're doing dirty keto, the symptoms get exacerbated.
It can even lead to other health problems like constipation, dehydration, other flu-like symptoms.
So we not only want people to lose weight, we want people to be healthy on the inside, getting those vitamins and minerals to help nourish our organs.
So again, we haven't done big medical studies to prove all this yet.
But you mentioned inflammation.
That was the issue with the heart attacks.
Nutrient deficiencies, skin disorders.
Yeah, these are really common.
Inflammation is a major cause of arthritis, heart disease, chronic pain.
You know, when we're talking about some of the other conditions, nutritional deficiency, you can be deficient in vitamin B12, your energy vitamin, magnesium, and zinc for your immune system.
And also, here's the big thing: rebounding weight gain.
A lot of people, when they're not doing this as a lifestyle, eating these real foods, they will gain the weight back really quickly.
The weight kind of like halted when I'm in that like dirty, like in a rush phase and I'm not really thinking about what I'm eating.
The weight kind of does halt the weight loss.
So, what changes do you recommend to Sasha and others so they can keep losing the weight or stabilize whatever they want to be without tipping in the dirty keto?
Well, here's the truth: people can do the keto diet the right way and eat amazing and delicious foods.
You know, some of my favorite things I've had my patients do is I've had them consume things like almond butter with some really dark chocolate.
That's delicious.
You know, guacamole is a really high-fat, healthy food.
And then, also, you know, there are recipes online.
Now, some are really bad, okay?
The fried cheese, but there are recipes for keto chocolate chip cookies, keto pancakes, keto brownies, where they're using almond flour, coconut flour, coconut oil, natural sweeteners.
In fact, I have a lot of those foods in my book.
You can find a lot online.
But again, there's a right way to do keto that can still taste delicious.
Yeah, and I want to lose weight.
I just don't want to be tired or feel bloated.
I wish working even harder if this would have been possible.
I know.
I need more energy.
Dr. Axe's new book's called Keto Diet is coming out in February.
Check out our Instagram story right now.
Dr. Axe has been posting lots of great keto recipes and hacks you will not want to miss.
Take advantage of all these resources.
Up next, the antidote to dirty keto.
Mantel Williams, my friend, is sharing his clean keto meal plan you will not want to miss.
The holidays are over.
You've stressed, indulged, and have been running on empty.
And now it's time to reset and rebalance.
If we don't take the time to do this, symptoms get louder and then diseases show up.
This is critical to do.
We have a personalized plan.
If you're not regular, you're nowhere that will jumpstart your energy from head to toe.
It's not more expensive, it's not challenging, it's just a matter of knowing.
All nuance.
That's coming up on Monday.
We just talked about the wrong way to do keto, but some revolutionary research taking the medical community by storm is showing doing keto the right way can not only result in weight loss, which I know you love, right?
But may even help fight diseases like cancer and diabetes, even neurological conditions.
Some doctors are even praising this type of ketogenic lifestyle with actually giving your brain more power.
That I love.
My friend Montell Williams says he's living proof keto can improve your health.
And he's teamed up with an impressive group of experts to show you how in his new documentary series, The Real Skiddy on Fat.
Take a look.
Very bright students come in and they think, like the rest of us, that consuming fat equals fat.
Anything we decide to mass produce, we start getting hurt the second you start eating it.
How did we get to the point where two-thirds of our society is overweight or obese?
You know, what happened?
So you're very rarely going to find people in ketosis today.
And the consequences of that is a whole range of chronic diseases.
Obesity is now the greatest source of inflammation in our body.
And inflammation is the common factor of cancer, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, and others.
The goal is to become really good at burning fat and to become so efficient that you don't need to eat a lot of food.
The cancer cells really aren't adapted to be able to use ketones where our brain functions very well on ketones.
Not just obesity, not just diabetes, Alzheimer's, autoimmune disorders, cancers, every disease you can name.
When I went to the doctor in 2000, I got the typical diagnosis of standby, get ready to die.
I mean, literally, I had the nerve to look me in the face and say that.
My friend Montell Williams is with us.
Get the finger, my friend.
Thank you.
Thank you for sharing this information.
Let me brag on you for a second.
2000, right?
He's diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
Sir.
Not told much about what he could do that would make it better because he didn't know much.
Told I was going to have a 15% less chance of life expectancy, so I should really be dead now.
So that's crazy.
And then just this year, you had a life-threatening stroke.
After all that, you've been able to walk out here.
You're the person I've always known and loved, which is remarkable.
And you argued the keto diet is part of this.
I think it's because of the protection, the neural protection.
You said something really good before you showed the tape, and that's the fact that we're starting to prove we know that the brain uses ketones as its source of energy.
In your great documentary, you say that we have gotten nutrition downright wrong.
That's your quote.
Downright wrong for years.
How so?
Absolutely, because in a Western diet, most of our diet is based on carbohydrates and sugar.
We need to bring those things down, and that's what I'm trying to do, because I want to be around.
You know what I mean?
Yeah, I want to be around, too.
I want to warm up.
I had a beautiful dormitory, my beautiful wife.
I want to be able to be here for her.
And after having the stroke, you know, for a while, I started, you know, dabbling in keto before the stroke.
But I'm telling you, it has really been since the stroke that I am really trying to get one 100% and go overboard because I know the neural protection I'm going to get out of it.
So this is not just about eating right the way you think you need to eat right.
We've got to think about it in a whole different way.
And a lot of you aren't ready for that, which is why I thought I'd figure out where you all are by asking all of you, the members of the audience, to fill out a little blank piece of paper that had a sentence at the beginning of the sentence.
It said it said, fatty foods are, and then blank page.
And what did the people say?
This was fatty foods are artery blockers.
Yeah.
Well, that's one thing I'm concerned about.
I talked about that earlier, right?
And again, it depends on the type of fat, right?
Because trans fats is what our problems are.
We were talking earlier about, you know, people eating pork rinds.
That's made in trans fat.
That's why.
How about the silly statement that fat doesn't make you fat?
As a matter of fact, it helps your body process fat.
We need dietary fat to have good nutrient absorption.
We need it for lots of reasons.
And we kind of made fat out to be the villain, and it's not.
It's the sugar that's the villain.
So come on over here.
Monte worked with experts all over the world looking at the ketogenic lifestyle.
And he looked specifically the effect not just on the body, but on the mind.
So let's walk everyone through exactly the theories on why keto might be so beneficial.
Because we've had people on this stage saying, if you want to deal with Alzheimer's symptoms, keto is the way to go.
MS, keto.
Absolutely.
Recovery stroke, keto, a lot of things, but it might be good for you if you haven't any of those things, right?
Because if you're like this, imagine what it could do for you if you don't have the barriers.
And you don't just have it, just happen to have just had a stroke.
So think about what you could do right now.
Everybody sitting in this room, everybody watching at home, they could change their life, change into a healthier lifestyle if we just recognize the fact that we've sold a really bad bill of goods.
All right, so the brain normally consumes carbohydrates as energy.
That's what we always thought was the main thing, and it really is.
However, some studies in animals suggest that simple carbohydrates can potentially increase inflammation.
The nemesis for neurological disease.
Yeah.
Makes everything more difficult because you can't heal with inflammation.
But when you stop eating foods that are rich in carbohydrates and instead replace them with foods that are rich in fats, you know, all these things I'm showing up there, the brain uses the ketones from that fat as energy.
And this may reduce the inflammation in the brain and can protect you against certain diseases which can extot and remove because your body can heal itself better.
So what benefits have you noticed in your lifestyle since going ketogenic?
And before again, my issue was high blood pressure is probably what caused my stroke.
My blood pressure has been almost steady, on a steady path.
My weight has been, I'm 62 years old.
I'm walking around with the 31-inch waist.
So I'm holding the dense.
Be jealous.
And I don't have to think about it.
That's what's so good about it.
I mean, I know that a lot of people are suffering with weight issues because you think about it all the time.
You change over to a ketogenic diet and lifestyle.
You have to stop thinking about it because it just happens.
So I got a guest for you.
Omira's here, a huge fan of yours, and she was diagnosed with my MS. How were you?
In 2016.
Good, good, good, good.
Glad to see you doing well.
Okay, so you're a recent diagnosed patient of MS. Montel's been there for 17, 18 years.
Yes.
You have a question for him?
Yes, I do.
Sure.
I've been on a weight loss journey for quite some time.
And I find it sometimes to be like, you know, I get bored quickly.
Sure.
So how do you follow the keto diet and not get bored or tired?
I hate the word diet, Doc.
And you have them all.
If all the diets that are online work, there'd only be one.
But there's about a million of them.
So skip the word diet.
You have to get into a lifestyle change.
That's what's so important.
I know you're working out and exercising, but if you start to shift over to make fat your energy source, I will guarantee some of that fog that you have in the brain will start to clear.
You'll start to have a little bit more energy when you wake up in the morning.
You'll be ready to go rather than, oh, woe is me, give me another cup of coffee.
So there are things that you have to do and stop thinking about it so much as if you have to meet this regimen.
Look, I'm on a ketogenic diet, but I do cheat every now and then, but I don't call it cheating.
It's like every 14 to 15 days, if I feel like eating something, I'm going to eat it.
And guess what?
After 14 days of keto, you don't feel like eating it anyway.
Skip the cupcakes because you just don't want it.
You take a bite of them, you go, you can just know that once you stop putting them in your body, your body will start craving them.
You used to be cookie guy.
Yeah, cookie freak.
Freak.
So if you can find it easy, you will feel.
Up next, one of Montel's personal wellness experts is here to show you what to eat to unlock the power of fat burning and age-defying benefits of this ketogenic lifestyle, including an insider's trick to launch your body into ketosis quickly.
It's a hack you won't want to miss.
This is a tragic event.
The most extreme case of Munchausen by proxy I've ever seen is charged with convincing her boyfriend to stab her mother to death.
All new Oz.
That's coming up on Tuesday.
This isn't just about overcoming sickness.
This is also about preventing sickness.
Right.
Being proactive.
I don't want people to walk away from this and think that, you know, oh, Montel's telling people with MS what they should do.
No.
If I can do it with MS and you don't have anything, holy moly, what would happen to you if you did something?
I am back with Montel Williams and wellness expert Naomi Widow who has seen dramatic transformations of people who've been practicing keto the right way.
They're about to reveal exactly what you can do to get the best results.
But first, Naomi, you've got a lot of people you've taken care of.
You have some before and some afters.
I just want people to see this so they understand what we're talking about.
It's so incredible to see these kind of before and afters.
Now, these are individuals that watched the docuseries, The Real Skinny on Fat, and they transformed their life.
This is my CFO.
He's 68 pounds.
But what's way more important, Dr. Oz, is he got off of 14 medications.
He went down to one.
And so all of these individuals did it by going from being sugar burners to fat burners, less carbs and more good fats.
And this video, our docuseries is available.
I think they can go on your website and download it.
They can go on Naomi's website, download it, and get the information.
Over 80 doctors around the world contributed to this.
These are some of the top doctors in the world.
So, I didn't want to give you any bulk, you know, stupid information.
I wanted really good heart science.
Good for you.
Come on over here.
I'm going to show you what Montel's eating.
Neoma, you're going to hold us honest on this.
I would have asked Montel because I believe him, but since you helped design the program, I wanted to hear it from your lips.
So, what does he have for breakfast?
So, Montel eats hard-boiled eggs, lots of good fat in his smoothie.
And then, if you go to his lunch, he's having a poke bowl, but he's having it with salmon.
So, he's getting the omega-3s.
He's getting his avocado.
So many good things in this delicious.
And, of course, everyone loves noodles and fat, fatty meatballs.
And what you're getting here is you're getting zucchini noodles.
So, you're not getting the carbs.
What she's not telling you about, there's a little secret weapon that's inside of all this, and that's called creamy MCT oil.
Come on over here.
I want to show you that.
This is an important thing.
There's a lot of snacks to what you get you through the day.
Yes.
And this creamy MCT oil is something you add to a lot of these snacks.
Here's what I think.
This is an important booster.
Montel Naomi like it so much, they actually sell the stuff.
So, first, explain why you like it to be creamy.
Yes, okay.
So, I love creamy MCT because what it does is it bypasses the digestive system, goes right to our liver, and allows us within four hours to be producing twice as many ketones.
It is the shortcut to keto, and I like it.
It's a secret weapon, I'm sure.
Because it's so gentle on the body.
So, what kinds of snacks do you eat, Montel?
You can eat it in a shake like this.
This is a really good shake, it's a vegetable shake, but it's got you know MCT oil, it's got coconut oil, it's got coconut water, it's got chunks of coconut in it, all blended up so that you're getting that good natural fat.
And the other thing about this creamy MCT oil is that you're gonna have it in coffee.
You can make it in things, you can make it in this is really macadamia nut cups.
So, what's in these?
So, these have macadamia nuts, so they're filled with the good fats in there and creamy MCT.
Isn't that good?
Oh my goodness, is that so good?
Okay, wait.
Oh, whoa, whoa.
Here, we're all good.
Okay, so here is our absolute favorite, right, Montel?
And you're gonna love this, Dr. Oz.
You've got to take a taste of it.
I can't wait.
This is an ice cream, but you make it so that you can make it, it'll stay in the refrigerator for about three to four weeks, right?
But taste this, and this will blow you out the door.
Ready?
So, you're not oh my goodness.
Oh, my goodness, so rich.
This is really keto ice cream, yes, keto ice cream.
The recipe is on Lenaomi's website.
You can make this at home.
We're gonna put all the recipes for all of these MCT oil snacks on Dr.Oz.com.
Please make these chocolate things and throw them, use them as your snacks.
Be sure to check out Montel's documentary, The Real Skinny Fat Streaming Online right now.
We'll be right back, everybody.
His story made headlines around the world.
The actor cut off his own hand and lied about being a wounded war veteran to get parts of TV shows.
Up next, in an Oz-exclusive interview, Todd LaTourette is here.
It's a disturbing story that made headlines around the world.
Actor Todd LaTourette has appeared in shows like Better Call Saul and Longmeyer.
Reportedly, he saw it off his own hand and then lied about being a wounded war veteran to get parts in TV shows.
Much of what you have seen and read may not be true.
And today, in an exclusive interview, Todd is here to set the record straight.
Thank you for joining us.
Honor.
I understand that you're upset about much of what you're reading in the media.
So, help clarify for us what is being said that is true and what isn't.
simply stated I did not sever my hand to gain notoriety in my career.
Basic.
The two are separate events, 2001 to 2015.
It transformed into what I lied about to get work on screen.
So as I look at your, I mean everyone can see that you don't have a right arm.
Why did you saw off your own arm?
Dr. Oz, I wasn't caring for myself properly as somebody that's mentally ill.
I wasn't diagnosed until 31, but I did see signs and I didn't take care of myself properly.
So many things could have changed if I had just taken my meds.
I'd more than likely have a right hand right now if I had just taken my meds.
Can you tell me what happened actually that day?
What through?
What was the pain like?
Certainly.
I had a beautiful night with my parents on Christmas Eve, 2001.
They went to sleep and within three minutes I had a saw on a mantle of a fireplace ready to do the unthinkable.
What I did, Dr. Oz, is I taped back the trigger so it wouldn't stop.
I taped back the guard so that the blade was fully exposed.
All that needed to be done was plug it in.
And without a moment's hesitation, I plugged that saw in.
And I put my hand through and it didn't come off the first time.
So I put it through a second time.
And it finally severed.
And I took my stump and I put it into the coals to stop the bleeding, which was pretty profuse before I got it into the coals.
As soon as that was finished, my mother came down and that was the hardest one.
It was my mother to say, over and over, what have you done?
By God, what have you done?
She would say, my God, what have you done?
And I'll be honest, Dr. Oz, I feel like I've scarred my mother's soul for eternity.
She still wakes wondering if that sound of that saw is going to wake her up.
And my dad went to work and he took care of me.
We got in the car.
We got to the hospital.
I was flown to another hospital where I had a very surreal conversation with the doctor hours after I had woken up.
He was over me and he asked, do you want to reattach your hand?
And I said adamantly no.
I felt like my hands had been the enemy for years.
I was self-destructive for many years.
And I felt my hands maybe had been the trouble.
So I planned on severing both of them.
I only got halfway through the job.
When the doctors finally got you back on your medications and you realized what had happened, you realized what you had done.
What did you feel?
Shame, shame, shame that I could actually do something like that.
And the aftermath was horrific.
So if I can share with the audience, Todd's story recently made headlines around the world when he admitted to lying about how he lost his hand in order to get parts as a wounded veteran on TV shows.
Why did you lie in order to get cast in these shows?
It was cowardice, absolute cowardice.
I dishonored myself, my family, and all the many courageous men and women of the military because I wanted job security.
And my dad is a veteran of Vietnam.
And I could not do that to them because that is cowardly.
I don't care how much money I need.
I don't care about my status.
I still don't, and I don't for the future.
I needed to say I'm sorry to my father and to the veterans.
Coming up, how did Todd cope for years with the shame of his lie and why did he decide to come forward and tell the truth now?
That's next.
Stay with us.
I love getting to talk with you on my show every single day.
But when the cameras stop rolling, the conversation is not over.
I still have a lot that I want to talk about.
So download the Dr. Oz podcast on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
We are back with Todd LaTourette, the actor who made headlines when it was revealed he sawed off his own hand and lied about being a wounded war vet in order to get parts on TV shows.
So you came forward in part to honor your father, but other vets as well, and you told the truth.
What has been the aftermath professionally and personally for you since doing that?
The last thing is my career is a concern.
I've lost my agent since then.
I am certain New Mexico, who I came out to apologize to, the film industry, will no longer hire me ever again.
And I don't care.
And you don't care?
No, not a bit.
And how has it affected you personally?
I feel so much better.
I tell you what, Dr. Oz.
There is a beautiful world with the possibilities, all sorts of possibilities, if I'm honest with myself.
What about the people who are angry, who read the headlines and they say, this is tough, tough to understand?
How do they forgive you for being dishonest about such a sacred issue?
Oh, God, it's so sacred.
So sacred.
There is no more honorable way to serve your country than with a loss at all.
I know this.
I did enlist in 1997 in the U.S. Army.
I failed to train when I went downrange, my second day downrange.
I failed to train due to mental exhaustion.
I was incarcerated for 28 days after a court-martial and then released from the Army with an ELS entry-level separation.
I left Fort Benning with a bottle of Prozac and my dog tags and no, absolutely no belief in myself at all.
What's the message that you think everyone at home right now needs to know about mental illness?
And obviously, I'm looking as if it's a visual testimony to how much you have suffered.
I actually wanted people to see what it looks like that it isn't, this is cosmetic, this is so I can look normal, but this is not normal.
And so yes, you can see that I have no hand, but what I would like to make sure that some soul out there sees what I've done to myself and sees a pattern in their own life and says, I can take my meds, I can seek counseling, I can seek psychiatric help.
I don't have to let this discourse of Todd's life be mine.
I know this has been hard for you, but the honesty that you've shown today is still worthy of respect.
So God bless you and good luck going forward.
We'll be right back.
This is a tragic event.
The most extreme case of Munchausen by proxy I've ever seen.
Is charged with convincing her boyfriend to stab her mother to death.
All new Oz.
That's coming up on Tuesday.
It's one of the most highly Googled anti-aging ingredients that you want to know about.
Hyaluronic acid.
Today I'm breaking down what hyaluronic acid is, why you may want to use it, and how it may be helping your skin and dealing with all those aging concerns you guys got.
With the help of my good friend Dr. Rofio Radera, my trusted sponsor partner, Dodeal Parish is chipping in.
Thank you for elucidating us.
So I've been reading about hyaluronic acid in so many different ways.
Please explain everybody what it is and why you think it's a critical ingredient for our skin.
Well Dr. Ross, as a scientist, people ask me about hyaluronic acid all the time.
And you know what?
When they hear the word acid, they think it's bad for the skin, but it isn't.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in our bodies and it acts to hydrate and plump the skin.
But as we age, the body production kind of decreases and that has an aging effect in our skin.
This is exactly why it's one of the top dermatologists recommended ingredients.
All right, so we want to explain this.
I want you all to see what hyaluronic acid does in action and how it works through science.
So we built your little model.
I think it's a pretty accurate recommendation.
This is your epidermis.
That's what you look at when you see the skin.
These little pink blocks here, right, they're the skin cells.
Now as we age, our body's natural production of hyaluronic acid, as you point out, goes down.
So you end up with a couple of these.
They're all called wrinkles.
You might recognize them, right?
And leave your skin, you're dry, lacking firmness.
It's not just a wrinkle.
But when you apply the hyaluronic acid onto the skin, and you don't need a ton of it, right?
A couple drops like that, spread it out.
It does a couple things.
It attracts water like it's a magnet.
So you begin to get that hydrating feeling.
And what ends up happening over time is those wrinkles begin to stretch.
Exactly.
The skin begins to plump up, and all of a sudden, you have a much different appearance.
When it's formulated properly, what happens is it will also plump the skin and reduce wrinkles, both.
I like this.
This is a much better look for my skin than I think, don't you think?
It's like a baby's bottom.
Just like we said.
All right.
So you mentioned hyaluronic acid has to be formulated properly.
Yes.
Because it's not all created the same.
Explain what makes it.
And again, this is another model.
Your epidermis is here, and these are the skin cells down below, little pink blocks.
Yes, so let's go over this a little bit.
So normally, hyaluronic acid is a big molecule.
It sits on top of your skin, right?
Just like on this net.
Let's put a little, some of them here.
But at the L'Oreal Labs, we went a step further and we took smaller molecules of hyaluronic acid so they can go inside the surface of your skin.
So some stay on top, the natural ones.
And what it does, it takes a step farther because it will go both.
It's just a very smart, amazing way to do it because it's the way they both work together.
Some will stay on the surface to visibly hydrate the skin, just like we saw in the balloon experiment, and some will go inside to plump and reduce wrinkles from inside.
And if you're a guy and you just slab your down like this.
Right, if you're only using a little bit more skin.
You want a lot on the surface for hydration and then inside for that plumping effect which you saw and also for very beautiful wrinkle reduction.
All right, so now that we understand the science of it, what do we do in practice?
Which L'Oreal Paris products actually have hyaluronic acid in the way you described?
So two of them.
One, our new Revadi-Derm-Intensives hyaluronic acid serum.
It's made with our highest concentration of pure hyaluronic acid.
And you remember those two size molecules we just talked about, the Vica the Smoke?
This serum has both.
It will plump your skin in one week and reduce your wrinkles.
Wait, there's more.
Fragrance-free, and it's been validated by an external panel of dermatologists.
Good for you.
But for those ladies that we know also love a moisturizer, a Revitalif Triple Power Day Cream actually takes care of all your top aging skin concerns.
Wrinkles, firmness, and skin texture.
Let me tell you a cool fact.
Hundreds of thousands of American women have taken the Revitalift Challenge and love, absolutely love Dr. Ross, these moisturizers.
So here's the deal.
We'll be giving thousands of audience members the opportunity to take the Revitalift Challenge and two of them have already completed the challenge and they are here today.
They both have been using the Revitalif Triple Power Day Cream for over two weeks now.
Beatrice, how would you describe your skin before this whole thing started and confide with us how you are now?
Well before this I've tried different creams, lotions as I've been chasing the fountain of youth.
We all do.
And have felt different ways.
But once I tried this, I really felt like I had a layer of protection over my face, hydrating my face all day long and my makeup stayed fabulous all day.
You know she was also mentioning how her makeup went on very smooth and I said that's because of the wrinkles.
After one week you see a wrinkle reduction on the skin.
That's why it goes smoother.
And Tara you actually use the serum as in addition to the moisturizer.
Yes.
The serum went on very smooth and it hydrated my skin and I'm always hesitant about using any kind of moisturizer for oil of effect.
I didn't notice that at all with this.
Actually my daughter said my skin glowed.
Your daughter said yes.
Never say that.
That's always so good.
How are you?
They did say my skin looked gray and that was without makeup and I'm always with makeup so I was just here's the real question.
Were your friends jealous?
I would say yes.
Yes, yes.
All right, so how would you actually normally use the products?
You can use both, you know, separately, morning and night.
I use the serum first and then the moisturizer.
Where do you find it?
What does it cost?
You can find it at Walmart for the serum is just under $24 and the moisturizer is just under $20.
So I gotta thank my partner L'Oreal Paris because they're gonna do a little something for us.
Are you all a little bit coveting how Beatrice and Tara look?
They should all be.
So thanks to my sponsorship partner L'Oreal Paris, the entire studio audience, you can take the Revitalift Challenge because guess what?
You're all going home with both!
The Revitalif Triple Power Moisturizer and Gordon Tenzin Tyler Rona Gas is served.
Use them together.
Enjoy it.
We'll be right back.
Congratulations.
The holidays are over.
You've stressed, indulged, and have been running on empty.
And now it's time to reset and rebalance.
If we don't take the time to do this, symptoms get louder and then diseases show up.
We have a personalized plan to jumpstart your energy.
that's coming up on monday Thousands of students are making their college dreams come true, all with the help of a special organization led by a woman who was the first to go to college in her family.
Take a look.
I'm Leigh Ann Huebner.
I grew up in an economically depressed area.
Neither of my parents had had the opportunity to go to college.
I felt that education would allow me to be able to do more in this world.
Working on Wall Street, I had the weekends free, so I started volunteering in my free time.
Called around to a couple dozen high schools in New York, and I was like, we want to help your B-plus students or above.
We want to give them mentoring and want to help them get into college.
It's just kind of life-changing in a lot of different ways.
They've shown me that there's a whole other world to discover.
I'll be the first in my family to go to college.
To touch someone else's life is, you know, so much more important than anything.
These kids are like me.
My trusted sponsorship partner, L'Oreal, actually sponsors Minds Matter.
I'm here with Minds Matter co-founder Leanne Hoebner and program alumni Dr. Eugene Kalakulan who currently works with New York Presbyterian where I work and he says Minds Matter helped them become a doctor.
I'm so proud of you.
Thank you.
Fantastic.
What's the key message you want to share with someone who feels stuck where they are now in life?
My message, stay positive.
You can do it.
It's easier said than done, but you can.
I believe in you.
Find a positive role model, somebody that can influence you positively.
Find a Minds Matter program.
It's in now 14 cities.
When I did it, it was only here in New York.
And Minds Matter gives you two wonderful mentors, lifelong connections.
In fact, one of them is here 20 years later.
That's Leanne.
So tell us how Minds Matter works.
So Minds Matter is a three-year rigorous program that starts sophomore year, junior year and senior year.
And we work with low-income youth that have been identified that we select and we give them two mentors, two summer academic programs, and a Saturday session for the three years in high school, extra academic rigor.
That's wonderful support.
So we also have high school seniors here, twins, Destiny and Dayvon.
Come on up, guys.
They're finishing their Minds Matter program and both want to be in the medical profession someday.
I'm so proud of you guys.
Besides how proud I'm sure your parents are of you, what does it mean to have a strong support system sort of urging you along?
It's been really great to have a support system like Minds Matter and also have mentors to help me through the college application process and also through high school.
Yeah, it's definitely amazing.
They gave us much opportunities.
I remember last summer I was able to go to Yale to do a nursing program for two weeks.
And I was also able to go to Johns Hopkins to study laboratory research for two weeks.
You guys are going to fight each other?
I mean, you guys spend some time here.
You don't understand that we can do it.
All right.
So, Minds Matter has a little surprise for you, a little something extra to support you.
Wow.
Thank you.
Thank you.
So, what is this?
So, we went out and raised, we raised some money that we wanted to help them go to college this fall to help you on their way.
And we wanted to make it an honor of you, Dr. Oz, for everything you've done for the health field.
God bless you.
We didn't have to do that.
But I got a question.
So, this says, destiny.
So, Destiny, are you willing to share this with your brother?
Huh?
Yeah, sure.
Is he nice to you all the time?
Does it warrant you?
Sometimes.
We give him a little bit of it, not the whole thing.
Yeah, definitely.
You know what we should do?
We should give him one time.
Wow.
So Minds Matter is giving you a $5,000 scholarship award.
How is this going to change your college experience?
I'm definitely going to help you take the college.
You know, family college knows something easy.
So now having a scholarship like this is definitely going to help me.
