How to Choose the Right Protein Powder for Your Body | Dr. Oz | S9 | Ep 111 | Full Episode
|

Time Text
Protein powder.
It's convenient, it's affordable, and it's delicious.
There are so many different kinds to choose from.
Clean wheat protein powder, casein, pea, brown rice, hemp protein powders.
There's all these amazing powders out there.
But which helps you lose weight?
Personalized buyer's guide to find out which protein is right for you, plus hair treatments for protein powder.
Here's the deal.
There are so many different kinds to choose from that many of you find picking a protein powder, well, pretty darn confusing.
And to help power through all the protein powder information is my good friend and protein guru himself, Chris Powell.
With bigger guns every year.
Bigger and bigger and bigger.
As big as they get.
So what's behind this protein power boom?
Oh gosh, there's a lot of reasons why, but there's three main components here.
It's convenient, it's affordable, and it is delicious.
I mean, I can, first of all, like, I source the fast food protein, and it's 10 times faster.
And then on top of all, it's getting closer and closer to actual milkshakes.
All right, so to help navigate all the confusion, slow digesting.
So because of that, it's going to make you feel fuller longer.
And that helps curb cravings.
And who doesn't want that when you're actually following a diet?
We want to curb that hunger, right?
Yeah, yeah.
Since my only meal, I need to make me feel full.
Absolutely try this, baby.
And while you guys are drinking that, check this out.
A recent study actually found that individuals who were drinking casein protein versus other protein powders, they lost more body fat and they gained more muscle during a 12-week study.
So this is some great stuff.
What do you think of that?
What is this?
Who made this?
What else?
I made this myself.
It's so good.
Oh, you put your foot in it.
Yeah, but with vanilla, with banana.
But because they don't really have a taste, right?
So you can cover it up, camouflage it any way you wish.
You can blend it with anything, with berries, with peanut butter, with all kinds of really cool stuff.
You can make the most delicious concoctions.
And as I was saying, they're starting to taste more like legitimate milkshakes, right?
That's exactly what this tastes like.
I'm not lying through the audience.
Oh, my God.
Before you make a final decision, I want you to pay attention to two other kinds, right?
We got Kimberly over here.
Kimberly, you're targeting something very different with your protein powder.
I am, yes.
So, you know, strong is the new sexy.
Strong is the new skinny.
Am I right?
I can appreciate that, absolutely.
And as a woman who works out Pilates, I'm in the gym.
I want something to help me maintain my lean muscle mass while still having a feminine figure.
So what do you got?
Okay, what do you got?
When it comes to training, the number one protein that I prefer after a training session is, of course, going to be whey protein.
It's going to go into the system really quickly so your body can work its magic and grow that big, beautiful muscle.
I would definitely do this.
This is a little bit.
It's lighter, but I don't know if it's how we made it.
I mean, did the protein powders themselves have that much of a taste difference?
There are slight differences in all the different protein powders.
And if you're a connoisseur like me, you'll start to pick up on them.
But at the same time, when it comes to the flavor profiles, boy, they can all be pretty darn delicious.
So I want you to look at this little demonstration we're going to do.
Chris, come over here.
So when you look at muscle building, it's a whole different ballgame.
So think about building up your muscles, like building up your house.
The muscle is basically the house of the body.
Now, let's say you want to put an addition on this beautiful house you have.
You're out there doing your Pilates or whatever exercise you're doing.
You want to get a little bit of lean muscle added on, right?
Not a big bulky person, but a little lean.
So to do that, you got to actually tear down the house to make room, which is what you do when you exercise.
That little soreness you get, that's because you are tearing down the muscle.
Now, when you tear it down, if you're trying to build it bigger, you need build-in supplies.
And the addition of those supplies is the protein.
So if you don't have enough protein in your body, all you do is put the old roof back on and you're not making much progress.
But if you have enough protein, when you break down the muscles, take the roof off the house, so to speak, you put on another floor.
Now you got a little buildup of those muscles.
You got guns like Chris, if you want them.
If you want them.
All right.
Hope that's helpful.
Yeah.
So.
Thank you.
Finally, whey protein, casein, they come from dairy.
So if you need an alternative to dairy, which a lot of you do because you've got an intolerance to them, my favorite, pea protein.
How many of you have heard pea protein?
Pea protein.
Not many, a couple people.
Little spattering over here.
Now, I actually think this is one of the unsung heroes of the protein move.
So what are the advantages of pea protein?
What do you lose by trying it?
Well, you really don't lose much at all because they've actually found that the profile for all the branched chain amino acids that you get in protein is very similar to both casein and whey.
So you get a lot of those same benefits.
But of course, like you were saying, if you're lactose intolerant or you're really not interested in eating animal-based sources of protein, it's such a beautiful alternative.
What does Chris Powell do himself?
What do you recommend for us?
How do we figure out which one of these to go with?
Well, it's really easy for me.
I'm looking for simplicity.
Less is more when it comes to this stuff.
So I'm only looking for about five or six ingredients.
If you see a paragraph of a bunch of stuff in there that you can't pronounce, put it down.
You don't need it.
Just get a good, clean whey protein powder, casein, pea, brown rice, hemp protein powders.
There's all these amazing powders out there and you'll be good to go.
So let me give you a little bit of advice here.
Help navigate the protein powder.
And by the way, thank you for helping us put it together.
Of course.
I want you to follow Chris's wisdom on all the things health and fitness related by downloading his app, Transform with Chris and Heidi.
And I'm going to put a buyer's guide on Dr.Oyes.com because this is pretty confusing for a lot of folks.
Use it if you're buying protein powder.
When you go shopping, share with your friends.
And when it comes to protein powder, you mentioned this at the very outset, I think a lot of folks are getting the protein they need.
You only need 50 grams, as long as you're not working out.
And if you are working out, you need a little more, then you can start experimenting with some of these.
But ideally, you do them both together, not one by itself.
Buying protein powder can be expensive.
So as we go to break, here's an easy to follow recipe you can make protein powder with right at home, your own protein powder.
We'll be right back.
He says,
the antidepressant he was taking led him to murder his own son.
I was shocked.
It didn't make any sense.
You believe your father when he says it's the pills that made him kill your brother.
All nuance.
That's coming up tomorrow.
We are back with your personalized buyer's guide to the new smoothie boosters you need to know about right now.
And to help us out smooth talking our way through these boosters is comedian Chuck Nice.
Oh yeah.
It's all about the smoothie.
No rough stuff here.
That's not sexy.
Just smooth, baby.
I love this.
All right, Chuck.
Give my head.
That is unbelievable.
So Chuck is going to introduce us to our three smooth E lovers.
Oh, yeah.
Maria knows how to get her smooth on.
The problem is it doesn't stay on.
She's looking for a way to stay full until lunch.
Don't worry, baby.
We got you all day.
And then there's Tiffany.
Tiffany has a cat named Sprinkles.
She loves to cuddle up with him as they marathon Bet Midler movies on Netflix.
I just made that up.
Why?
Because it's smooth.
To whom I don't know.
But she needs an immunity boost.
So Netflix and chill, but not with the cat.
That would be weird.
And then there's Jenny.
Yeah, no need.
Jenny's totally cool.
Okay, honestly, I can't remember what she wants in a smoothie.
Memory boost.
Oh, yeah.
Maybe I should get a sip of that.
Unbelievable, Chuck.
Let's get started with Mohair.
She wants a smoothie boost.
Like Chuck?
I do like Chuck.
Very nice and smooth, wasn't it?
So smooth.
So well named.
All right, we've got a smoothie boost for satiety.
So why are you unsatisfied with your current solution?
Well, because I'm always on the run rushing in the morning.
I'd grab a smoothie for breakfast, but then by 10 o'clock, I'm starving.
You want Chuck to give you the answer?
The solution?
I do.
All right, we poured through Pinterest.
We looked for social media solutions, and we found the next greatest smoothie to keep you full.
Chuck, take it away while Maria tastes.
Oh, yeah.
They're smooth.
They're creamy.
They're good for your heart.
The more you eat, the more you fear first dates.
Your smoothie boost for satiety is white beans.
Whoa!
White beans.
This is why you might fear your first date.
Because the interesting thing about beans, what gives them their taste is primarily the salt in there.
Think about that.
If you don't have much salt, they don't have much taste.
You can seek them in there, a little creamy.
It gives you that smooth feeling that you want.
What do you think of the taste?
It's really, really good, actually.
It was like nutty, creamy.
I'm trying to guess if there was banana and what's in there?
Banana?
Mostly just beans.
White beans.
Just beans, lots of them.
I'll definitely compare that next time.
Very smooth, isn't it?
It is very smooth.
All right, next up.
Tiffany wants a smoothie boost for immunity.
So if you don't mind, Tiffany, give it a taste.
I want to get your honest opinion while Chuck shows us why this new smoothie boost might actually be great for immunity.
In the words of Janet Jackson, give me a beat.
Oh, yeah, that's Miss Jackson if you're nasty.
And that beat is spelled with two E's.
Your smoothie boost is beets.
Very smooth if you're an immunologist.
You almost choked.
What happened?
I didn't think this was beets.
Surprising, isn't it?
Yeah.
Describe it for everybody.
So, basically, it has like a rich taste to it.
It has, it's a little bit sweet, not too sweet, though.
A little earthy, maybe?
Beached me.
Oh, God.
So I had to go there.
Oh, I had to go there.
But it's nice.
It's a little bit different than what I'm used to.
I usually go for something sweeter, but I think if you're not really into the sweetness as much, it's perfect.
It has a balance.
I love it.
First, it's got the great color.
Can't beat that.
But the immunity is small in the crepes.
But it's got minerals and vitamins.
It's got something called betaine, which fights inflammation, which is why I think it's a pretty good solution.
Okay.
And plus Chuck liked it too.
All right.
Next up, we got Jenny and Emma.
She wants the smoothie boost for memory.
Chuck had trouble remembering.
So what are you having trouble remembering these days?
Everything.
I left my laundry in the laundromat overnight.
I totally forgot about that.
My kids were so mad at me.
I don't know if they have a solution for that, but we have another solution.
They are what Chuck describes as our secret smoothie boost for memory.
Yeah.
She normally travels with sage and thyme.
That's one aromatic threesome, baby.
Very fragrant.
We're talking Rosemary, baby.
Well, not Rosemary's baby.
That would be a little weird.
The spice girl.
Well, not the spice girl.
Okay, you know what I'm talking about.
So how does the rosemary blend with fruit?
Well, I'm very surprised that you can actually drink rosemary in a smoothie because I always think that that's for like chicken.
But it tastes really good.
It doesn't overpower the fruit taste, so I guess that's good.
It smells good.
We need to be using more of these spices.
They fill the room.
They fill your nose.
But the best part about rosemary in one small study, they actually showed it to help with prospective memory.
That's like memory, like, you know, I got to pick up my kids at two o'clock or I got to pack something for lunch.
It may not help for forgetting your laundry overnight, but it's a separate, we'll make a different smoothie to that.
Well, this is great.
So if I can do this and it'll help me remember, I'm game.
It's a gift from the show, and my attitude guests are taking Chuck home.
Smoothie loving!
Chuck did a great job.
Thank you very much.
All the smoothie lovers need for being here.
We're going to put the recipes in the entire buyer's guide on drozz.com so you can be smooth about life.
Be right back.
Supercarbs to supercharge your weight loss.
Let's end the war on breath.
Plus, Carrie Cruz on being sexually harassed and his secret porn addiction.
All nuise.
That's coming up on Wednesday.
You know, nothing makes me angrier than when someone preys on the most vulnerable.
Just to make a quick buck.
And those peddling phony hair growth treatments are the worst.
And there are more than a few.
In fact, the American Hair Loss Association warns that 99% of all products being marketed in the hair loss industry are bogus.
99%.
I mean, that's crazy.
So how can we tell which ones actually work and which ones are actually a scam?
We sent core team member Tia Brown to investigate.
Like an estimated 30 million American women, Christie's hair is thinning.
And whenever Christy goes online, she's flooded with ads for products to help with hair loss.
Shampoos, serums, shots, pills.
But it's really hard to navigate the hair loss treatment industry.
There's so many different products out there, I just don't know what to go with.
No, that's really tough, especially if you want to spend your hard-earned cash.
Except you want results.
I do.
I'm desperate for a cure right now.
And it's not just online.
Supposed hair loss treatments are everywhere.
So Christy and I decided to go undercover.
We were rigged with hidden cameras, then headed to three salons to find out which hair growth treatments are legit and which are scams.
Hi, ladies!
Online, the first salon advertised a hair thinning treatment using a popular FDA-approved wrinkle injection.
But once we got there, the story was not quite clear.
Yeah, her hair is thinning out, so that's what she wants to do.
We showed respected dermatologist Dr. Dindi Engelman our footage and asked her to weigh in.
So this is completely preposterous.
There are studies ongoing about injections in the scalp in the dermatologic space to help with hair growth, but this is nothing more than a hair conditioner and honestly it's not going to incite new hair growth.
On to the next salon.
This one advertised a scalp treatment to help with hair loss.
Christy printed out the info.
Now I don't know what you offer because of thin hair.
We really don't have, I don't know what they have, yes.
They don't have the time we do the scalp treatment for the green hair.
So a treatment for greasy hair or severate dermatitis is going to have absolutely nothing to do with hair growth.
Again, completely misleading and false advertising.
The last salon we visited has been helping women with thinning hair for 25 years.
So what brings you here today?
I saw online that you have treatments for thinning hair and other people.
Yes.
That's why I'm here.
This is so.
What we want to do is we want to dress your thinny hair back here.
Your thinning hair here.
And your thinning hair here.
My personal opinion is some people over top.
Okay.
How do you feel?
You're excited?
I don't hear it.
I am excited.
Tia Brown is here with Christy, who looks unbelievable.
Thank you so much.
Amazing.
Different energy.
You carry yourself differently.
It's a different person.
I feel like a different person.
I feel amazing.
Last person helped.
Definitely helped.
I haven't felt this good since high school.
Oh, my goodness.
What surprised you most about what you uncovered?
Oh my gosh.
This was such an interesting study.
And Christy was a great sport.
She was really pushing it, making sure that she asked the hard questions.
But I was surprised because, you know, it was really like kind of like a bait and switch.
The ad said something very clear.
We will help with hair thinning.
You got there, and what did they say?
We can't do it.
Continuously, over and over again.
So I was really shocked by that.
So what you come away with after this whole venture, all this work.
What do you think about the world of the hair growth industry?
Well, there are a few things, but I think the biggest thing that people should know is that there are two different labels that you can have from the FDA.
One is FDA cleared, and that means that the product is safe to use.
It means that it won't harm you.
But the other one is FDA approved.
That's the only way you know it works.
Christy, I am so impressed by our transformation.
I am too.
And I love the extensions.
Thank you.
But you remember that great dermatologist who's looking at the videos, Dr. Dundee?
Yes.
This is actually her specialty.
Okay.
So if you're up for it, she's agreed to take care of you.
Really?
Take you into her practice.
She's legitimate.
She knows what's FDA approved and FDA cleared.
So we're going to send you to her for a free consultation.
Wow, that is so exciting.
That is so exciting.
Thank you so much.
Up next, Chloe Making is going to share some of these treatments that really do work with us, and they're all customized to your needs.
Stick around.
Coming up, we're investigating hair growth treatments so you can avoid the scams.
and find what works.
Couple numbers.
It is estimated that 50% of women experience hair loss by 50, and every single one of them is desperate for an affordable solution that actually works.
The problem is, there's a lot of scams out there.
So we invited our favorite hair expert, Curly Nikki, here, who has worked closely with my medical unit to come up with hair growth treatments that can work for you.
With so much money being made out there, we just saw the scams that are heading out.
How do you find out what's worth your money?
This is a billion-dollar industry.
So if you don't have the right information, it's treacherous, super treacherous.
My first recommendation would be to avoid descriptive words like amazing or miraculous scientific breakthroughs.
That's just words that companies use to pull emotions out of potential consumers.
Total red flags.
Avoid that at all costs.
Also, I'm sure you guys have seen like those 30-day money-back guarantees, right?
You feel secure, right?
You feel like you got an insurance policy.
No, you need at least 90 days to see any results from any of this stuff because of the way our hair grows out of our scalp.
90 days.
So that would make sense.
Part of that makes sense.
Right after that they're telling you they're going to treat it.
Exactly, exactly.
And then finally, Dr. Oz, don't click those links on social media that take you to the fake news sites with like the glowing reports about the latest scientific break.
They're right for the hair loss treatments.
They're fake.
There was recently a blogger who had her picture taken from her website, posted on one of those fake news sites with a testimonial about a product that she had never even heard of or tried.
So you have to be very careful.
It's a ton of what's greatness right now, and it's infuriating.
So come on over.
Let's start with new treatments that actually do work.
These ones are making headlines from New York Times, they're on Bloomberg News, they're on Vanity Therapy, all over the place.
I'm reading about this.
They are customizable serum and shampoo regimens.
Yes, yes.
So there's a lot of them, but the most popular one is from Denmark and it just hit the States and people are clamoring to get their hands on them.
It contains an ingredient blend of proprietary ingredients from plants, plant extracts and fatty acids, and actually an ingredient derived from cow's milk.
And then they customize it for your particular hair care needs.
Studies.
There have been some studies that the company claims they've conducted that are placebo controlled and double blind, but they haven't published them yet.
They're hoping to publish in a peer-reviewed journal next year.
So there's a lot of excitement, but no research that I can point you to.
All right, they don't count till they're published, these papers, by the way.
So let me invite Lauren out here.
Lauren has actually done the work.
I like there's a phone consultation.
I understand you have to do what you did.
Yes, I did.
And then they said, based on what you answered, they put together a package that made sense for you.
Yeah, absolutely.
So it was first a quick online consultation, which was super simple.
And then the same day, I scheduled the phone consult where it was via video.
So they took a look all around my scalp and from there asked a few other background questions of my history.
And from there, they said you're a candidate and we'll send you a customized serum and then shampoo conditioner.
And I got it within a couple of days.
Is it easy to use?
Yeah, yeah, pretty easy to use for sure.
Yeah, they give you a little syringe that you apply the serum to, or you know, on your scalp.
So it's too early to tell if it works.
It is, yeah.
I haven't been using it for too long, but they said maybe in like a month or two.
You have to be consistent.
I'm sure.
Yes, you do.
You have to be very consistent.
We'll revisit this.
I'm curious because I'm reading about it everywhere.
Yeah.
And I do wish they had published material, but listen, if it works, you can do it at home and it's just about customizing to you.
Exactly.
Yep.
Good for you.
Great.
Thank you.
Good luck.
Thanks.
Next up, Nikki says, is an affordable over-the-counter shampoo.
It's been shown to help with hair growth.
It's called ketoconazole.
It comes in a little bottle, easy to pick up.
You can get it at any drugstore.
You just want to make sure that the ketoconazole is in a top five ingredients to make sure you're actually getting the good stuff.
Originally, it was used for dandruff, but we found that it actually also helps with hair loss as a side effect because it has an anti-inflammatory property that really promotes hair growth.
The twofer.
Exactly.
Get rid of the dust at the same time.
All right, now this is the cutting-edge idea that I thought we'd spend most of our time on.
It's laser therapy.
It's available for in-home as well as doctors use it in their offices.
Exactly.
There's real science behind this.
Yes, there have been some small studies that show that they might actually be helpful.
Right here, we have the cap.
They start at about $100.
I know they start about $100 that they go up from there.
And we also have the brush here, $35 they start at.
They go up from there, obviously, too.
What you need to know, though, is that these light diodes, the more there are in your unit, the faster it works and the more expensive they are.
So this is going to take a lot longer, the at-home one.
The at-home one will take a lot longer unless you buy the more expensive one.
Exactly.
So the more money you spend, the more light diodes, which means it's more effective and more quickly.
You just put it on for a couple minutes every day?
Every day.
Every day.
And it actually like dilates your vessels in your scalp, so it like increases blood flow and it lengthens the growth cycle of your hair.
So you get longer, thicker hair over time.
Allegedly.
A gift from the show.
Oh, can I take them?
True?
I don't think it works.
All right.
Troy, thank you very much.
I'm going to be in talking about one other idea.
There's a lot of buzz about having some science behind this.
This is actually the only product that's been scientifically proven.
It's FDA approved.
Remember that language?
FDA approved for female hair loss.
It's called Minoxidil.
There's generic versions of this.
You know, it's not that expensive.
You can go to your doctor.
They can often prescribe it for you, and they'll also often get an anti-inflammatory medication to go with at the same time.
So, I want to take a minute to just explain this to you all because it actually might make a difference to a lot of people, and you're not wasting your money with this.
So, let me go back into your hair here.
So, this protocol sort of works together because if you look at your hair, a lot of women notice female pattern balding when their hair starts to thin, especially here at the part, you'll see it a lot of times.
So, a lot of times, if you look at the scalp, there's actually some underlying inflammation.
See these areas right here with red, angry, right?
So, you're gonna deal with that.
So, first, you put a drop of one of these topical steroids on there.
That sort of calms the inflammation down a bit, creates a better environment for the hair to grow.
Then you put some of that minoxidil on, that sinks into the follicles, the follicles will get bigger.
It'll stimulate growth of the hair and keep it in the right cycle.
So, the new strands will come out thicker and fuller, and thus the part and the rest of your hair tends to fill in a little better.
See how happy she is, guys.
That's a happy avatar.
So, ask a doctor about that, it might be helpful.
We'll be right back.
Up next, Starbuck Empire actress Grace Byers is here.
She's revealing how she says we can all stop down bullying big time.
And she's got some health secrets that she swears by, including this.
Where's the C from?
This is from the Cayman Islands, where I grew up, because you know, sometimes stress can be there too.
This tastes really good.
That's Grace Byers in her breakout role of the fierce record executive Anika Calhoun Lion, one of TV's hottest shows, Empire.
Today, the actress is opening up like never before about her painful health struggles and how she's fighting back against an epidemic that she says is tearing our country apart.
Bullying.
Please welcome, Grace Byers.
Thank you. Thank you.
I'm so excited to have you here.
Oh, I'm so happy to be here.
You're even happier to have you.
The audience is so fast.
Yay, I love it.
How are you?
I'm doing very well.
I am so impressed at your rapid assessment.
So, you started in theater, very talented, obviously, but then you get this breakout role in Empire that just makes you an overnight sensation.
Oh, wow.
What's that like?
Oh, gosh.
Well, originally, I'm from the Cayman Islands, and so it's a very small country.
And so, anonymity is very huge.
And so, I learned how to prize that.
So, you know, coming from a theater background, this was my first TV gig.
So, it took away my anonymity a little bit.
So, that took me a little time to get used to.
But at the same point in time, it brought me to a place where I said to myself, Okay, if I'm going to have notoriety, what do I want to do with this forum?
Yes.
What's the opportunity that God's giving you?
That's right.
So, Trey, who I've had the honor of meeting both of you, and they're like cuddly, lovely little things together, which is so cool.
So, but you met Trey on Empire.
Yes.
I had not realized when I first met you.
And I'm just curious, what's that like?
I mean, working with your husband is not always an easy task.
You know, I love it.
Isn't that strange?
I love it.
But Trey is so handsome.
It's charismatic.
I get it.
But also, too, you know, he and I are very, very, very professional.
And so we both have had lots of training in theater.
And so I think that focus and that discipline that we've had, you know, doing our bachelor's, doing our master's, you know, we bring that to set, you know.
So it's a lot of fun.
I mean, when we're working on the same day, I'll prepare smoothies for us.
I'll pack our little lunches.
You're kidding.
How can we get together?
We'll have our little bags.
We carpool together.
Can you imagine this?
Pick traffic together.
They're both late.
Yeah, I know.
Or sometimes we'll, you know, if we're only an hour or two apart in our call time, we'll just, we'll just go together and just, I mean, we do love to work together.
And just actually working with him is really wonderful.
I mean, he is, as you all know, he's a phenomenal actor.
You know, he's so good at what he does.
So, yeah.
God, Trey is lucky.
He has no idea how lucky he is.
There's a topic that you've become vocal on that I'm very proud for you for taking on, which is bullying.
Yes.
People deal with bullying in many different ways.
Yes.
But a lot of times folks who are fighting the battle weren't bullied themselves.
Absolutely.
You're a little different because, and you may not know this, but her parents don't hear, right?
They're deaf.
Yes.
So what was that like growing up with them and how did that translate to some of the bullying experiences you had as a young child?
Yeah, that's a great question.
I think a lot of times when we look at each other in life, like, you know, because a lot of people will look at me and go, oh my gosh, Grace, you look like you have the most perfect life.
Like, could you really have been bullied?
Could you really have experienced anything so dark and, you know, all that stuff?
But I think the most important thing to remember about anybody that we come across is that it doesn't matter what somebody's life looks like.
Everybody has a story.
Everybody understands what it's like to struggle.
We may not have had the same experiences, but that does not mean that we haven't had rejection, hurt, pain, that we haven't been ostracized.
And I just think that just in general, we just need to have a little bit more grace and compassion for people.
But as a child growing up as a CODA, for me it was tough just being around kids who just didn't understand that.
Of course, being so young, they see difference.
They think that.
Share with you, what hope did she give you to get past that bullying?
So my mom, who actually is a huge fan of you.
I wish you would drop.
I've always known her to be a person to be so confident and so accepting of herself.
And I think a big part of it is because she's so in tune with God.
You know, so she finds her worth and her value in him.
And that just emanates from her.
So when I was a child, she would always tell me, Grace, you are beautiful.
You are amazing.
You are talented.
You are enough.
You know, you don't have to listen to what these kids are saying.
So you wrote this beautiful kids' book, children's book, that I think can help anyone who's got a loved one who's being bullied.
And it's basically a letter to the eight-year-old version of yourself.
Yeah.
What you could have told yourself.
Right.
I think that, you know, it's, especially when you hear it from your mom, you know, I was like, mom, you're just saying that because you're my mom.
And A, yes, but B, no.
She was saying it because it's true.
But also with all of that, I think that it's so much more important for us to begin to have a world and outside narrative where we're creating the ideology for our children that says, you know, your value and your worth does not lie in what other people say or think of you.
It lies in just the fact that you are worthy because you have been given life by God on this earth and simply because you're alive, you are valued.
Hallelujah.
Period, period.
Book is beautifully done, beautifully just written.
It's called I Am Enough.
It is out now.
You know what here?
Get one and give it to a friend as well.
Yes.
You use the book.
Up next, Grace's sticking around.
She's getting even more personal, sharing some hot health secrets from where she grew up in the Caribbean.
Including, I want to hear this secret for wound healing.
Stick around.
He says the antidepressant he was taking led him to murder his own son.
I was shocked.
It didn't make any sense.
You believe your father when he says it's the pills that made him kill your brother.
All nuise.
That's coming up tomorrow.
We are back with actress Grace Byers from Empire and she's revealing the hottest health secrets from the Caribbean.
She swears by them.
She's from the Caribbean.
She knows it all.
Their first health secret is depriving energy pick me up.
It's coconut and scotch bonnet peppers.
Yes.
Ooh.
Teach everyone about why this works.
So this is a really, this is a ceviche.
This is a coconut ceviche that I got from my very dear friends, Luigi and Christina at Cayman Cabana, local place back at home in the Cayman Islands.
And they use young coconuts, which is really great in protein.
And of course, if you crack this open and you drink the water, the hydration is fantastic.
And you just take the meat of that and you want to make sure that it's not too hard and not too soft, right?
So it's nicely, you know, chopped when we chop it up.
And then when we eat it, it's, you know, it's nice and goldila.
Ceviche.
Yes, I love it.
And the Scotch bonnet, this is different than a habanero.
You can get it from your local Caribbean store, and there's a lot in the major cities.
And what you want to do in this case is you want to chop it very finely and you want to make sure that you don't eat it with the seeds.
Way too hot.
Way too hot.
I shouldn't take this and bite this like this.
No, don't do it.
So I know enough about Chris Ray.
I see you guys wanting me to bite in this.
So it's a scotch bonnet pepper.
That is super spicy.
This is a regular pepper.
They have this scale they use, jalapeno, for example, $2,500 on that scale.
That's Gold Gill heat scale.
This is a hot $100,000.
You don't want it.
$100,000.
It's 40 times hotter than the regular pepper.
Yes, you don't want to do it.
It's a burning my lips.
I put my lips on your house.
If I do it the way you do it, it tastes like this.
Yes, and so here we have some bell pepper, some cilantro.
You have a little bit of mango to give it some color.
But this scotch bonnet will give you that flavorful heat.
Not just the hot heat, but the flavor.
It's flourful almost.
Very nicely done, Gray.
Yes.
A little bit of lime.
Yep.
And I'm not even a big hot eater.
Yes.
Heat hurts me.
Good idea.
And I like the fact that it mimics what a fish surviche would be.
Absolutely.
It's got that same little stringiness to it.
Yes, and it's naturally vegan.
So if you don't like meat, that's great.
But if you do like meat, you can also add some grilled shrimp on top of that.
So good.
All right.
The final trick is a lemongrass tea to help de-stress and detox.
Frankly, going into the Caribbean where you're from, we would think would de-stress us.
But as you point out, life is a challenge wherever you live it.
Exactly.
So how do you make this?
Okay, so this is what you call lemongrass, right?
But back home, we actually grow this in stocks and we call it fever grass tea, right?
And I think a lot of people from the Caribbean understand what fever grass tea is.
Yeah.
And the reason why we call it that is because when we don't feel well and our temperature changes, drinking this tea will actually normalize our temperature in our bodies.
Oh my goodness.
I know.
It's really wonderful.
And when that happens, your body just starts to calm down.
It really relaxes you.
And my mom likes to do a little bit of mint, fresh mint in there.
Just drop it in.
And it's so good for digestion as well.
It'll settle the stomach and it will calm all of your nerves.
You can just boil it for just a little bit and then you can strain it.
So I understand correctly.
The fever grass should boil for about five, six minutes.
Five, six minutes because it's a tougher stock.
And then you add the mint at the very end.
Yep, the last few minutes.
You pour it out.
That's right.
Without spilling it too much, like me.
Yeah.
I'm sure let you do that.
Thankfully.
And then you put a little honey, is that correct?
Yes, if you want it to be a little sweeter, you can put a little honey.
And the great news about this is that you can have this warm or cold.
You know what?
You de-stressed me.
Yeah.
God bless you.
And I want to thank your mom for making you and raising you so well.
She's invited whatever she wants back.
Fresh bars take her out.
Empire Wednesday nights on Fox.
You know where to see it.
We'll be right back.
...carbs to supercharge your weight loss.
Let's end the war on bread.
Plus, Carrie Cruz on being sexually harassed and his secret porn addiction.
All noise.
That's coming up on Wednesday.
We're backstage.
I'm going to let you down a little secret.
Come closer.
So I asked my go-to tester to be here today to try these.
They're the new tearless onions that just hit the market, promising dry eyes and you slice and dice them.
But here's the thing: I swished them out on Renatha's table.
She's got regular onions in her table.
I gave myself these tearless ones.
I can't wait to see what happens.
So, don't tell anybody.
You gotta go, Dr. Os.
Hey, Ranatha.
You ready, Ranatha?
All right.
Hey, guys.
You ready to go?
Yeah.
All right, do it right.
Enjoy these onions.
Enjoy them.
All right, pups.
Here we go, please.
Hey.
Thray.
Whoops, please.
We're talking about these new Sunyans.
They're called sunyons, which you may have read about.
They're the new tear-free onions.
But here's the question: do they work?
So to make things interesting, we're going to have a little contest to see who has the fastest onion chopper on the chopping block.
Renatha, you ready?
Yes.
All right.
But you know what, though?
The only thing that makes me cry is hysterical laughing, okay?
So I don't know about crying on TV.
I love crying in victory.
All right, you ready to go?
Yeah.
Ready, he said.
Chop.
Now, while we're chopping here, I'm going to teach you guys a little bit of something.
There we are.
Wait.
You're going to waste time.
What is happening here?
I'm going to start bothering my eyes at all.
I don't understand.
How's yours been, Bar?
Look at mine.
I'm just fine.
Dr. I. Looking up my makeup.
You look beautiful no matter what.
Thank you.
But you know, seriously, I didn't realize why onions made you cry.
And they don't actually affect you the way emotions affect you.
They're an irritant in there.
