What Your Metabolism Score Reveals About Your Weight Loss | Dr. Oz | S9 | Ep 115 | Full Episode
| Copy link to current segment

Time Text
What's your metabolism score?
This is all about rapid weight loss healthfully and effectively.
The quiz to see the new metabolism boosting foods you should be eating.
You get the same flavor that you get from teriyaki sauce.
It's perfect.
Plus.
My mother's mother died of 65 of a heart attack and then grandfather told me.
How Vanessa Williams and her daughter are fighting back against a family history of heart disease.
We are knocking out heart disease right here.
Coming up next, are you ready to say some lives today?
I love you, Dr. Lime.
What do you think your metabolism feels like this?
A slow drip with ripples of excess fat slowly accumulating around your waist and everywhere else.
But what you really want is to feel like this, a raging inferno, burning the fat all off your body.
Well, today you all want that?
Good, because today, the metabolism revolution that you've been waiting for, we are uncovering a new way to determine your unique metabolism intervention score.
And it could help you better customize and maximize your weight loss.
Now, to help us out, nutritionist, a best-selling author, Haley Pomeroy, is here.
Thank you very much.
So why is it so important for us to understand our metabolism score and how does that help us actually change the metabolism?
You know, Dr. Oz, individuals that have been struggling to lose weight have been really given a raw deal.
They've been given these one-size-fits-all diets that just don't work.
It's about putting you front and center, understanding your body, learning how to feed yourself to burn fat.
So to truly understand metabolism, you have to be hooked up to a mask.
You all know this, right?
They put you in a treadmill with the mask and they figure out how much oxygen you're using.
It's hard to do that at home.
In fact, you can't do it at home, I don't think.
It's very long, it's complicated, it's expensive.
You got these formulas that are equally difficult to do.
But Haley has created a simpler quiz you can take right now that she says can help you figure out your personalized metabolic intervention score.
So let's get to the quiz.
Everyone in the audience, please follow along with me.
At home, you can keep track of your mind or go to droz.com.
It's right there.
Question number one, how many pounds do you have to lose?
Most people know the answer to that.
The options are.
Absolutely.
So A, you would be in a situation where maybe you need to lose 10, 15 pounds, somewhere under 15 pounds.
Or option B, if you're looking to lose more between 16 and 50 pounds.
Or then there's option C where you really feel like to be at your ideal body weight, you need to lose more than 50 pounds.
So how does determining this, as a result of this, help us figure out our metabolism score?
It tells us a lot about the body composition.
It also tells us about what kind of micronutrients we need.
So the goal here is to get the fat cells to release fat because that's an abundance of energy.
It's also really helps stabilize hormones in the body.
And so the goal is to feed the body so that it releases that fat.
And it really matters how much fat you're carrying, how much muscle you're carrying.
It's really about putting you back in charge.
So question one, pretty cut and dry.
You all know your number.
Question number two, to help with the next question, I want Tracy, Linda, and Sue to join in with us.
And they're here to help.
Here's why.
If you get a group of friends or family together, we've all been through this, and everyone has just one donut, right?
Guess what happens?
Everyone uses the energy differently, which is why you're so angry at your friends not putting down the weight that you put on when you have a donut.
So which donut best describes your metabolism?
That's the next question for you.
Are you A, like Tracy?
You burn it off almost immediately.
Or are you like Linda, who's B?
You store half, you burn the other half.
You're sort of right in the middle.
Or are you C like Sue?
You store every, every ounce of that donut directly into your fat cells, or it certainly seems like that.
See the ladies, you see their donuts, that's the clue to which one you may be.
That was question two.
Question number three: Which titan best describes your health goals?
We're going to lay it out for you.
Get us an A, a B, and a C, which are, Haley.
So, A, are you looking to gain more muscle to really tighten kind of the collagen and the elastin and really firm up the body?
Or B, are you liking to maybe lose weight but also gain muscle?
Just create some more definition, but also lose some weight.
Or C, are you looking to lose weight effectively and rapidly?
There are a lot of C's out there, I know, but there's some A's and some B's, and it all makes a difference.
Question number four is about your gene sizes over the past five years.
Please be honest here.
Yeah.
A.
And this gives us an indication if it's become easier to gain weight than it is to lose weight.
So, A, have you basically worn the same gene size?
You know, maybe gone up, maybe they're a little bit tighter.
Or select B, if you're following or you're finding that your body is fluctuating between two to three different gene sizes, or three, if you have several sizes of genes in your closet and many of those you don't fit into anymore.
With the operative note, if you're more than three sizes of genes in your closet, something's going on here.
Question number five: This is an important one because it does describe your energy level, which should be you should have an abundance of energy, and fat is stored energy.
So, A, do you feel energized throughout the day?
You wake up bright-eyed, bushy-tailed.
Or B, sometimes you struggle to feel energized, sometimes you have those slumps in the afternoon, or C, do you find that you're extremely fatigued all day long?
All right, those are the five questions, guys.
Remember the letters you had.
It's time they revealed your metabolic intervention score.
If you're mostly A's, that means you have an active metabolism.
What does that mean?
You do.
So, an active metabolism is an individual that has more muscle.
Their tricks work.
You want to exercise a little more, maybe eat a little bit less, and boom, the weight falls off.
B's are folks who have out-of-balance metabolism.
B is out of balance, the body's starting to have maybe some hormone dysfunction.
Your old tricks don't work anymore.
You've been a yo-yo dieter possibly.
And really, you're just starting to know that it's easier to gain weight than it is to lose weight.
And C's, the C actually stands for crisis metabolism.
Crisis.
At this point, the body's in rapid weight gain.
And, you know, it's really unfortunate because so many people in this situation get criticized for what they eat.
And, you know, the body's in weight gain mode.
So it's so important that we create a metabolism intervention that's unique to these bodies.
And that's why this quiz can help so much.
That's what we're going to do because when we come back, Haley is revealing the customized plan to eat for your metabolic intervention score.
So remember your grade.
Be right back.
It's one of the most sadistic killers of all time.
I knew they were dead.
The BTK serial killer.
The images still haunt me.
A survivor speaks out on losing his family.
Plus, RB star Kay Michelle's butt injection nightmare.
Discoloration, migraines.
This material becomes carcinogenic.
Our cameras reveal the painful removal.
Something's not working.
All nuis.
That's coming up tomorrow.
We are back with a personalized plan to maximize your metabolism.
The dish is Haley Pomeroy is back.
She's just helped us reveal your metabolism intervention score.
You can take the quiz on drows.com to find out which one you are in case you missed out.
But we identified three basic scores, starting with the active metabolism type.
So if you don't mind, give us an idea what kinds of foods each type of metabolism person can eat.
Absolutely.
With an active metabolism, an individual has a little more muscle mass.
So you know, our body stores natural sugars in the muscle and in the liver.
And so these people, we want to prime them to develop a little more muscle mass.
They can also get away with some carbs.
They can, absolutely.
We actually use carbs to lose the weight.
This is all about rapid weight loss healthfully and effectively.
Now, how about the type B's?
You guys have an out of balance.
The B stands for out-of-balance metabolism.
They are.
They are out of balance.
Their body isn't burning fat as quickly as it needs to.
They're starting to get a little bit sluggish in the afternoon.
They're having fatigue.
And their old diet tricks just don't work anymore.
This is people that have maybe dieted in the past but are really ready.
So we want to prime their bodies for rapid weight loss.
We use the complex carbs again, but we load a little bit heavier in the protein so we can actually stimulate some more muscle mass so that the body can burn through that fat more efficiently.
What about the C's, like folks who are in a crisis metabolism mode?
So, you know, Dr. Oz, I use food to help the body lose weight.
Actually, the more weight you need to lose, the more food you need to eat.
It's so critical when you're using micronutrients that we have the complex carbs, that we have the protein, but we really want to layer a lot of vegetables.
And the reason for this is the vegetables are like kindling for the logs and the fire.
So we actually use a ton of food for when people are in crisis.
This is an intervention.
And the more out of balance your body is, the more the intervention needs to be all-encompassing and really evoke rapid weight loss.
Let's put this to use.
Let's find out exactly how to make each meal based on your score.
You probably paid attention.
Notice that we have fiber and protein as building blocks.
So take us through a couple examples.
So typical breakfast for someone who's A.
Yes, so A, we're going to do the steel-cut oats.
We're going to actually also incorporate some apple slices, again, to help elevate that natural sugar level.
They are individuals that we want, you know, muscle is so sacred in the body.
And when an individual has a higher muscle concentration, we want to make sure that we protect that because that burns fat.
In the B, yeah, we start layering in a lot of the plant-based fibers.
Also, we bump up the protein level a little bit to encourage or entice more muscle development with some plant-based proteins like mushrooms.
And then again, lots of spinach or lots of vegetables to act as that kindling.
And then when a person is really in crisis, we've got to double down on the food because the food is what actually makes you lose weight.
The diet industry talking about calories and refraining, it's just been so abusive for so long.
We need a revolution.
So what we're going to do if you're in crisis mode is we're going to add more vegetables, more protein, and you're going to layer it on top of all this incredibly good food.
You have turkey bacon here.
So we're talking about a real protein boost.
Yes, a real protein boost.
These are individuals who aren't using insulin effectively.
Their hormones are out of balance.
Weight gain has become their destiny, and I'm here to revolutionize that.
All right, so let's take an example for lunch.
So same kind of concept, so people get it right.
Give your basics, which are yeah, we've got some tuna salad, we've got avocados in there, we've got a nice oil, a nice, healthy fat.
And again, if you're out of balance, we actually need to add more vegetables.
We need to add more spinach, more of that fiber, especially in that afternoon slump.
And then if you're in crisis, if your body is convinced that weight gain is a must, we've got to completely revolutionize that.
So we layer in more protein, we double down on the vegetables, and we increase the body's ability to burn those micronutrients and stimulate the metabolism.
I'm getting this theme.
I hope folks at home are as well.
So let's take a dinner.
Now, is it frittata?
No.
No, that's actually a spinach squash.
Yeah, it's really good.
We use that as a fettuccine for this, and it's chicken and all the vegetables, a lot of those phytonutrients.
Again, if you're out of balance, I'm going to double down on the food because it's the food that brings the weight loss about when you use it strategically.
So we want to identify your ideal body weight.
We want to identify what's your metabolic dysfunction.
How out of balance is your metabolism?
And then we want to feed you strategically for your body.
So again, if you're in crisis, you'll notice there's more protein, there's more vegetables, because it's these micronutrients that are going to heal the why within.
Now, if the folks who are A's are out there, it's not as many calories.
So how do the A's generate the ability to eat more food than this?
We count calories.
We don't count calories.
We count treasures in my book.
Treasure.
We count treasures in our life.
It's about the micronutrients that stimulate the metabolism.
And if the body has more lean muscle, if we start losing weight really rapidly and we're an A, we layer in more things that are going to feed the muscle, like layering in more fruits.
We never do less, we always do more.
You don't take any other body that's in crisis or any other business that's in crisis and say do less and you're going to get more out of it.
We have to nurture the body once and for all.
And one of the big differentiating concepts are snacks.
So I got the main meals down, but if we get the snacks down, we'll really be in the winner's spot.
So this I noticed, I just pointed out.
So if the A's got, you know, it's just mostly just carbs, complex carbs, but carbs.
Yes, so if you want to revolutionize your metabolism, you have to eat and you have to eat five times a day.
I'm not a faster, as you know.
It's micronutrients that make the metabolism work.
Every single metabolic pathway is micronutrient dependent.
We get it from one place and one place only, our food and the sun.
So if you have a lot of muscle, again, muscle in the liver feeds off of natural sugars.
So if you're very much more lean, your body has less than 15 pounds to lose, we want to make sure the snacks have a nice fruit.
If you're out of balance, we want to use healthy fats for that snack.
Then if you're in crisis mode, we've got to stabilize the blood sugar.
We've got to get rid of that insulin resistance that everybody's talking about.
Well, this is actually how you do it.
You add the healthy fats, the lean protein in between the meals that lowers the glycemic value that allows the body to actually scavenge fat.
So nuts do that, which I love you all talk about.
Humus you mentioned also similarly has the right kind of fat.
Yes, it does.
You actually have, again, turkey jerky.
So we can eat protein like this.
Yes, during your snack, especially if you're in crisis, we want to lower the glycemic value in those valleys between the meals.
So not only will you lose weight, you'll have energy, but you'll also look a lot better.
You know, we have logged over 2 million pounds of weight loss in our little community, but it's all about falling in love with food.
Always turn towards food.
Don't let anybody tell you you need less.
When we come back, the new metabolism boosting foods, which you're not eating, but should be.
Stick around.
They've got an appointment.
I'm such a huge fan of yours.
This is the first time I've cooked on TV.
To see Dr. Oz.
I can't believe you can do that.
Look at this.
Thank you for having me, by the way.
It's nice to do this with you.
They tell Dr. Oz the things they don't tell anyone else.
So, you ever look at your urine?
That's the first time in 10,000 interviews that anybody asked me to come on a monkey.
Only on Dr. Oz.
We're back with new ways to maximize your metabolism.
Hey, Pomeroy is here again, along with Merle O'Neal, co-creator of BuzzFeed's food brand, Tasting Vegetarians.
You know, all those food videos that you're just mesmerized by.
Now, they're revealing the best new metabolism-boosting foods out there.
The first you find are coconut aminos, which I had never heard of.
So explain what they are and how do they boost your metabolism.
Well, they're extracted from the sap of the coconut tree.
They're really rich in obviously amino acids, which as we know is the building block for lean muscle, but also all of our sex hormones.
And so they boost the metabolism by giving the micronutrient to stimulate those metabolic pathways that burn fat.
So, again, it's not white because it's not from the flesh or the outside.
It's actually from that, show the tree, from that sap.
So, Merle, why does everyone on the Internet just love this stuff?
I mean, it's gluten-free, it's vegan, it's low sodium, there's no soy.
You get the same flavor that you get from teriyaki sauce, so it's like, it's perfect, and it's like, it's like a thinner teriyaki or a soy sauce.
You can add it to dips, you can add it to anything you want, marinades, dressings, you name it.
It sounds like you might be able to make a video out of this.
I mean, we already have.
Yeah, here it is.
look at the metabolism boosting meal using coconut aminos.
So Meryl, did you bring me a taste?
Anything at all?
I have some in my bag.
I didn't bring it out here.
In your bag.
It's the best I can do it, Merle.
All right, next up, metabolism-boosting food that you're all going to adore.
My daughter just texted me about this, saying I should do it.
Luckily, it came to me because Haley and Meryl had organized it.
It's oat milk.
I want to find out why Daphne is so excited about it.
So why should she be?
And why does it affect your metabolism?
You know, oat milk's amazing.
It's great for individuals that are allergic to dairy, also nuts.
I mean, so it kind of really helps from a food allergy perspective.
It's also really rich in the B vitamins, which, as we all know, really helps burn fat.
It tastes great.
It's, you know, you can put it in a lot of different foods, and it's a definite metabolism booster.
So how's everyone using it on the web?
Oh, you name it.
It's really cool because you can kind of customize it the way you want, and it's so quick and easy to make.
You just soak these oats for like five minutes and then you blend them and you drain them.
It's perfect for any sort of thing you want.
You can add a little bit of cinnamon, you can add a little bit of salt for something more savory, like a pasta cream sauce, or you can add a little bit of maple syrup for something sweeter like cookies.
It's really good in coffee too.
Chia pudding.
Here, try cheating.
Are these metabolism busted cookies?
I am allergic.
Oh, you're allergic.
I'm going to have it.
I'll grab this and take it.
Grab a cheetah.
Cheers.
Absolutely.
So I'm told that putting it in coffee may be the next big deal.
Oh, my goodness.
You can avoid all the other stuff.
You get something that's very healthy for you.
And they can get away with a little cookie.
They get it right.
There you go.
Count your blessings.
Thank you for putting the videos.
Haley, fantastic job.
For more recipes, character metabolism.
Pick up a coffee of Haley's wonderful new book, Metabolism Revolution.
Or you can go to drive.com for metabolism boosting shopping lists.
Be right back.
Delicious.
I'm here with the beautiful, smart, and amazing mother, daughter Duo, Vanessa Williams and Jillian Hervey from Lion Babe who are sharing their secrets to heart health and so much more.
So what's the message?
Since you're around a barrier she couldn't break.
From being the first African-American woman ever crowned, Miss America, to rewriting the rules for working actresses over 40 in Hollywood.
Vanessa Williams is here and a claim singer, best-selling author and mother of four.
And today she's opening up about her own personal health risk.
Please welcome, for the very first time on our show, Vanessa Williams.
Me too.
It is nice to be here.
They're certainly happy to see you.
Thank you.
Hi.
So happy you're here.
My first time.
Yes.
Yeah.
Oh, it took so long.
I know, I know.
It's been a while.
But finally.
Finally.
Everyone knows you live in Wisteria Lane, right?
That's what happened.
I used to.
In real life, I didn't know you live next to your mom.
My mother does live next to me.
What are the good and the bad?
Why is keeping family close so important?
Because it is important.
I literally, my mother is on the other side of the tennis court.
I can walk and borrow anything I need.
I pick up her mail with my dogs.
And it's wonderful.
I moved to my hometown with my kids because I wanted them to have a normal life.
They went to my high school, you know, they had some of the same teachers that I did.
And it was important because I knew that I'd be busy.
And I knew that I'd be on the road or off doing a role or singing somewhere.
And I knew that they would have that base.
And that's why I chose to be a little bit more.
It comes in handy.
It does.
So after 30 years of mothering, you're finally an empty nester, which I am this year too.
Really?
Yes.
Well, you.
Not yet.
I mean, we graduate in June.
So, yeah, she's a senior.
I don't know about you, but by the time my kids were in high school, they're gone anyway.
So you're practicing for empty nest syndrome.
Well, my 30-year-old moved back in, so I'm not quite an empty nester yet.
After 30 years of marriage, of being a mom.
But, you know, I have two great Danes.
I've got, you know, not only friends, but boyfriends of my daughters.
And so it's always a fun.
And you have a husband now.
And I have a husband now.
Newlywed.
So yeah.
Well, it's been some years, but yeah.
The first seven years count as newlyweds.
Do they really?
Of seven years?
Seven years you have chemical handcuffs on.
Okay.
All the hormones that got you to fall in love, they're still on.
And they are shed after about seven years, which is why you have to reinvent the wheel at that point.
Ah, here it comes.
Remeet the manually.
Did you hear that?
It's actually good news.
You're supposed to do that.
Okay, all right, every seven years.
Yep, all your relationships.
That's good to know.
Work, kids, everything.
Uh-huh.
Uh-huh.
Good, good, good.
Beauty is an interesting phenomenon.
As a doctor, I know that beauty is to me about inner health seeping out, but we have vestiges of our family life, who we think are beautiful as not.
And you were, for many people, the first African-American beauty, the woman who helped define for women of color, what beauty looked like, and was acceptable across all races.
Well, I mean, I would say as a title.
As a title, as a title.
Yeah, as a title.
Beauty is existing forever.
Absolutely.
So do you think we have done enough in this country to expand how we define beauty?
Oh, absolutely.
I mean, compared to what it was when I grew up in and what it was with my mother grew up in, I mean, when I grew up, there were only a few black dolls available for me to play with.
And we're talking 1963 or so.
So the amount of images that are out there and successful women of color that are there that are examples is completely tripled boundaries.
So, you know, it certainly has changed.
But, you know, back in, again, 1983, when I thought we were pretty much contemporary and everything was changing, when I won Miss America, I had death threats.
I had an FBI file of people that, I mean, I had snipers on personal appearances when I went out because I was black.
So it had nothing, and that's the 80s.
We're not even talking about the civil rights era back in the 60s.
So we've taken time after time.
Slowly, I think we've had some progression.
But I think the fact that now we live in a day where you can see commercials and ads and images and listen to anything in terms of books and authors that have shown that women have paved the way of women of color is phenomenal.
So I'm very happy to be one of the women that have helped open the doors.
You're very brave for having done that.
People think it's easy because you have all the accolades, but actually there's challenges.
It's challenging.
And especially at 20, when I look back, She's about to be 55, but I'm 54 now.
And I look back at what I had to endure at 20 years old, and then I look at my own children and see how young in spirit they are.
You know, when you're a junior in college, you're still trying to form who you are as a person.
So the fact that I had to be kind of judged on not who I really was, but what people perceived me to be, was really tough.
But it made me made me tough.
Made you tough.
Speaking of tough, the Me Too movement.
A lot of women coming forward, Uma Thurman most recently, arguing that we've got to change the way women are perceived.
And Hollywood's probably a good place to start.
What are your thoughts about this movement?
I am so, the Me Too movement has been created by Selma Hayek, who was a producer of Ugly Betty, who I know and work with.
America Ferreira, who Time's Up, who was the star and my co-star in Ugly Betty, and Eva Longoria, who I did Desperate Housewife together.
All these women are so dynamic, so outspoken.
When I heard this whole thing rumbling and I knew that these women were behind it, I did not doubt it for, I did not doubt its efficiency, its potency for a second.
When you talk to them, if you have, do they feel the pressure of being in front of this movement?
The pressure, I think they feel that it's working.
I think they are really happy with the momentum.
America started a foundation called Harness, which is basically harnessing your energy and fighting back and resisting.
So these women, I am so proud of them for being able to create a movement, which is exactly what they've done.
When you expose yourself, the press is not always kind.
We've all had moments in our lives, folks who are in front of the camera.
You had some in the 20s.
You're a triple threat, right?
A singer, dancer, acting.
And when you look at your life, do you believe that you've been able to prove, that you've accomplished what you wanted?
In the very beginning, what was your goal?
Well, you know, I grew up an hour away from here in Westchester.
So I would come in to watch whatever the latest Broadway shows were with my mom.
And when I started doing musical theater in school, because I danced my whole life and sang and played instruments and marching band, everything, but when I knew that I could major in musical theater and actually have a career out of it and started auditioning, Broadway was really my goal.
And the fact that not only have I been able to star on Broadway, but have a recording career, be on television, be in films, write a book, tour the world.
So what drove you to want to do that?
Why would a nice little girl from Westchester want to change the world and expose yourself?
What did you want to prove?
Because I knew I could do it.
I guess it's like that, you know, when they say you have the fire in your belly?
It's the fire in your belly.
I knew I wanted to do it and I knew I could prove it.
Yeah, so I think you're born with it.
Yeah, well, it's probably a combination.
And my parents said you could do anything you want.
My parents are educators.
They are music teachers.
They said you'll have to work hard.
Whatever you do, you have to be trained.
But if you're trained and really work hard at whatever you want to do, you can do it.
One of my favorite songs of my wife, Lisa, is you saved the best for last.
And saved the best for last is just, I won't have you sing it.
I'm sure you always ask it.
But what do you want to save for last?
What's still left to do?
All these remarkable accomplishments you've done.
Well, I can't wait to be a grandmother.
I know that's coming around.
That feels really good.
I can't wait.
Grandfather Park.
I think the grandmother part does.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And I love inspiring people.
When I speak, whether it's young women, whether it's Whatever it is collectively, and I can impart knowledge of my life and my journey and connect with people.
I do that, and I love it.
Whether it's singing a song and seeing somebody cry because it connects with them, or it's telling my story and having somebody be moved by the lesson that I've learned and that they can learn as well.
I've got more lessons to give and more songs to sing.
All right, so when we come back, she's gonna share some of those.
Vanessa's daughter, Julian Hervey of the hate group Lion Babe, joins us to share how she and her mom are tackling their family health risks head on.
Stick around.
All nuise.
That's coming up tomorrow.
As Jillian Hervey of Lion Babe and this shoe with W Magazine.
That's, you know, she's welcoming your mother's footsteps, isn't she?
Vanessa Williams here is very proud of her mom.
And she's, well, it's actually your dance step.
She's walking in.
Please welcome the singer, performer, and the huge talent everyone's talking about right now, Jillian Hervey.
I am you.
Lovely to meet you.
You got your mom in you.
Yes, vintage Muclaire.
Do you ever dance together at home?
I steal her stuff.
You do?
Sometimes.
Yes, I rate her classet.
That's normal.
Stealing stuff is, I think that's how people learn.
Exactly.
So, Lion Babe, fantastic group.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
You've had a lot of success.
You're white hot right now.
And your mom is such an icon for my generation.
Yes.
And I know the hardship.
She has to actually share some of these things I didn't realize were going down in her life.
When you look back on that, does it anger you at all that you had to struggle through that?
That she had to open a path for you?
It definitely angers me when anyone treats anyone in my family in a way that they don't deserve.
But I have a lot of respect for how she navigated through her hardships.
It's been a great example of, in my own career, I feel like my adversity is so much smaller than hers.
When if I feel down or I'll give her a call and she'll just kind of put into perspective, like, imagine, you know, everyone comes from different ways, but at least you're supported.
You're around people that support you and they believe in you.
And she had to start again, you know.
And I think that was just very hard to know that that happened to her in her life, especially at such a young age.
So I'm very proud of her, though.
Oh, that's really cool.
Right?
Now she's getting emotional here.
The interesting thing about success is that the demons aren't always outside of you.
Sometimes they're inside of you.
How do you stay grounded?
And has your mom shared any of her tips of how she managed to pull it off?
You know, I love New York.
I think New York keeps me grounded because you're in the city and you're seeing people from all different walks of life all the time.
I'm taking the subway to my studio, staying connected with my family, you know, just simple things.
We love cooking in our house and reading, and I love to be at home with my dog.
What's your favorite dish?
My favorite dish.
I mean, I love Thanksgiving, but I also love brunch.
I mean, that's my favorite, I think.
You should have asked what you don't like.
So this Me Too movement is influential for many reasons, but one of the most important things it has to do is hand the baton to the young generation.
Yes.
How's the movement going to change folks your age?
You know, it's definitely in the conversation within my friends and peers and other musicians.
I feel that I've always had a responsibility, not only as a woman, but as a black woman, to empower people that are like me and look like me because I think it's all through representation and it's all through spreading awareness and actively talking and speaking your truth and being honest with that.
So I think, you know, women need to do that more.
And yeah, it's definitely changed though because this stuff has been going on for years.
So in my generation, my mother would say, listen, this is going to happen.
Don't take any nude pictures.
Did I listen to her?
No, but, but, but she told me, listen, people are going to try to scam you and you've got to be careful and watch your back.
And the older you get and you realize that you share these stories with people and like, this, really?
And then you realize that so many women have had the same issues with different people while they work, where they're, you know, in school, they've had issues.
So now this generation has the freedom to say, okay, not only do I know what might happen, but I'm not going to stand for it and it's no longer be a secret anymore.
Yeah, so it's definitely changed, for sure.
Yeah.
I love how real you are.
It comes in handy amazing totters.
I want to commend both of you.
They're both coming forward talking about the importance of screening for your heart, which is something that people are scared about.
Yeah.
And it's simple to do.
If you don't know about it or you're too scared to do it, it never happens.
We lose a lot of women because we lose more women than men from heart disease and stroke.
Absolutely.
So what has been the biggest family history struggle?
Well, my grandmother, my dad's mother died at 28 of a heart attack.
28?
28.
And back then they said, oh, well, she had a bad heart, but she was pregnant with her sixth child.
My uncle already was 13 pounds, so how she got finished with that and had another one.
But, you know, back then they just said, well, she had a weak heart and that's why she died.
She died while she was pregnant with her sixth child at 28.
Her husband died at 53 of a heart attack.
My mother's mother died at 65 of a heart attack with complications of diabetes.
And then grandfather died at 80.
So the heart issue has always been paramount in our house.
So how does it affect you?
You're still young, but to hear that your great-grandmother, I guess, died at age 28.
I know.
I mean, for us, we've always been a very active, healthy family.
I think both my parents instilled that with us, which I love and I'm thankful for it because it's part of my everyday.
I think a lot of people, if you don't grow up with that, you don't realize that, oh, there's so many easy ways to stay healthy and to just keep going, keep checking on all your stuff without feeling overwhelmed.
We never really shied away from the doctor or anything.
They weren't like, oh, it's scary.
When you go to the doctor, Vanessa, I'm a stronger.
My cardiologist lives next door to me.
Oh, perfect.
Your mom on one side and dots here.
Exactly.
So, yeah, no, it's sweet.
Come on over here.
Since your health is good, I'm going to challenge you a little bit.
I made you this little present, and I bought you your own purple gloves.
Oh, okay.
Are you ready?
I guess so.
Let's do this.
I'll give you a number, and here's the picture, if you don't hear me clearly.
One in four women dies of heart disease.
For African American women, the risk of heart disease is actually greater than one.
One in four.
So Vanessa, if you don't mind, once you're geared up here, I want you to lift this fourth heart up.
Because the three normal ones are the ones we want to celebrate, but this is the one we want to prevent.
Okay, so it's obviously enlarged.
It's enlarged.
So this is the normal size.
It's a tiny bit larger than that.
What size is your fist?
So we give you a fist.
So it's about right actually for you.
Okay.
Okay.
So look at that, you know, it's a lot larger.
And then look at the walls of it and describe it to everybody.
Thick?
Thick.
Yeah.
That's the right word.
Yeah.
The reason this heart is thick is because it had to pump against high blood pressure its whole life.
And the only way to, when you have to do heavy work, what happens, your muscles get bigger.
Right.
Well, same for your biceps, same for your heart.
As the muscle gets thick, it gets so thick it can't relax.
If it doesn't relax, no blood can come in.
The heart pusses pump like this.
Right.
And it gets heavier and boggy.
And this is the kind of heart that causes massive problems because you're always a short of breath and ultimately it stops.
Yeah.
So as you feel it in the bogginess.
Yeah, it's heavy.
And it's thick, you see?
Yeah.
Should you hold it because you're young enough to.
Oh my goodness.
Maybe you'd share this wisdom.
Wow.
Yeah.
What catches your eye on that?
Yeah.
It's the, it almost looks like a fungi or something.
But I just think the texture is, it doesn't seem to be the one that's ideal.
Yeah, you're supposed to have walls that are more like this.
This is the right side of the heart.
Didn't have to press.
But when it gets thick like this, compare that with your finger.
Right.
It's like a pipe.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
It's very different textures.
This is more thicker.
So why are people afraid to get checked for their heart?
I mean, what?
There's two big reasons, in my opinion.
Yeah.
They don't think they can do anything about it, which is just not true.
Because they have hereditary, so I'm just going to die young.
You.
You have four members of your family, you mentioned heart disease.
So it's destined that, you know, you can't change destiny.
Right.
No.
It's not your destiny.
And we have so much more technology, even if you can change with lifestyle.
Right.
And the other reason they don't do it is they just don't know.
Yeah.
They don't realize it's the big deal.
Right.
That's why I know your numbers.
That's why you guys are here.
Right.
Screening.
Yeah, screening.
Actually, give me share that passion.
Why do you get screened?
Because I want to stay, I want to be here as long as I possibly can, for sure.
Please.
And I don't want to continue.
You know, my mother, who's 78, who's, I don't know where she is in the world right now, but she's always active.
She is the one who said, I am not going to end up like my family.
And she's the one that really kind of said she was going to change the game.
So we are here to continue kind of what her heart passion is.
So here's our plea to you.
Listen to mom.
What she's saying is true.
Vanessa and Jillian are partnering with Women Heart and Burlington Stores, God bless them, to knock out heart disease throughout the month of February.
Women can receive a free heart health streaming and exam at any Burlington store in the U.S. Go and do it.
Don't be afraid.
Know your numbers.
We're doing it.
Doing it?
Doing it today?
Do it today.
When we come back, Vanessa and Julian share their favorite secret to heart health with you just for you.
It's this one simple action you can take today.
Stick around.
Only on Dr. Oz.
A new season of True Crime Tuesdays.
New evidence surrounding the cases you've obsessed about.
She heard him cry in pain as he was dying.
And this season, True Crime Thursdays.
Deadly and tainted alcohol.
They're robbed, raped, or they're killed.
True Crime Tuesdays.
And now, Thursdays, only on Dr. Oz.
We're all about heart health.
And now, Vanessa Williams, along with her daughter, Jillian Irve, from the hit group Lion Babe, are showing their absolute favorite secret to heart health.
And it is.
We are knocking out heart disease right here.
It is kickboxing.
Kickboxing.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I kickbox in a class.
I love the class.
I love the camaraderie.
I love teaming up with my partners.
But also, it's cardio.
It's powerful.
Great music.
Great music.
Of course.
You got it.
And you get totally drenched.
So we're going to share everything?
So just a quick jab with your left.
Okay.
Okay, sorry.
Jab cross with your right.
Give me a hook.
Strong.
Whoa.
Overcut.
The flurry, the flurry.
Over the top.
The flurry.
Whoa.
Give me an elbow.
One big left punch.
Come on here.
I love you guys.
I do an impounder mother-daughter duo.
I got four women in my family.
Bless you all for what you're doing.
Get checked, everybody.
Get checked.
Thank God Hardhop.
We're all doing it together.
We'll be right back.
Knock it out.
There we go.
One of the most sadistic killers of all time.
My latest online video obsessions are videos of dogs being reunited with their owners.
I'm joined now by veterinarian Dr. Heather Lenzer and her dog, Calvin.
How are you, Calvin?
So what is it?
Why does Calvin recognize me but understands that you are you?
What is it about our existence that makes them so happy?
It's so much about our smell.
So dogs' sense of smell is at least 10,000 times better than ours.
And we actually have functional MRI scans that show the reward center in the brain lights up when a dog smells somebody familiar.
So I don't excite him with my smell.
No, as exciting as you are, your smell's not exciting to him.
But also, dogs are not actually designed or bred to be alone.
We have bred them for thousands of years to protect us and to hunt with us and to work with us.
So being away from us is very unnatural.
So when we're reunited, it's like putting a fish back into water.
Like the universe is back the way it should be.
Well, I just love seeing the image.
God bless you, Heather.
Hey, everybody, happy healthy starts at home.
