We've all been there.

After sleep, we're going to meet the financial guru who started her business at her dining room table.
And after losing everything in the Great Recession, she figured out how to rebuild.

But I want to get started with the sleep revolution.
We went to Harlem, New York City to launch a sleep revolution with our first ever pop-up sleep clinic at the Greater Refuge Temple Church.
We partnered with the Huffington Post and my friend Ariana Huffington, a leader in the crusade to improve America's sleep.
We're all living in a world where we don't treasure sleep.
It's the single most underappreciated problem in America.
We can do better.
I'm so proud to be working with Ariana.
Her power has been such a leader in this area.
I came to this realization the hard way.
I collapsed from sleep deprivation.

Our team of doctors and sleep specialists spoke with members of the community about their quality of sleep.
Rule number one is pick a time to get up.
Get up at that time.
Get out of bed.
Every day, every day.
Do you stay asleep the whole night or usually wake up every day?
I wake up like two or three times a day.
One of the risk factors for developing sleep apnea is having a larger neck surface.
Ariana and I checked out the latest tools and technologies for better sleep.
This is an amazing nap that we have at the Huffington Post Offices in our nap room.
Stop in there.
Yes, it's yesterday.
If you're tired in the middle of the afternoon, you can just take a 20-minute nap and it completely restores your energy.

This is about sleep hygiene.
We have smells that are attractive, can block bad sounds.
We can open up airways.
We can put our sleep blinders on, masks on.
This is actually what sleep hygiene is about.
Where are you?
What is the key to getting us all to sleep through yoga?
It's focusing on the breath.
Close your eyes, sit nice and tall.
Just focus on the way your breath comes into your body through your nose and the way that it leaves your body through your nose.
Good question to you.
How much sleep are mommy supposed to get?
Between seven and nine hours of sleep.
We need to relax.
Boys and girls your age, which is three and four and five years old, be between 10 and 13.
And if we can get your kids to bed earlier, we're here to help you get to bed earlier too.

It was a great reminder to me the importance of what it is to get enough rest.
I learned if just simple breathing, just relaxing, can really help me actually have a better sleep.

So I gotta say, I was so surprised at our little pop-up sleep clinic.
So many of those women that we were talking to said they had never had a serious discussion about sleep.
They'd taken it for granted.
I know, it was amazing to see how many women especially really believe that sleep is a waste of time.
They almost blame themselves for needing sleep, for being tired during the day.
So it was just amazing to see how something that is available to all of us, it doesn't cost any money, it's completely at our disposal, can dramatically change our lives, our health, our happiness.
I'm so excited to be partnering with you on this.
Well, I am as well.
Help me understand, because you got your finger on the pulse of everything going on in this nation.
So I'm curious about you personally, because I know nine years ago, you're not the woman that's sitting in front of me today.
I was a zombie.
I was one of the zombies that you talked about at the beginning of the show.
I was perpetually sleep deprived because I had bought into the delusion that if I was going to achieve things and be a good mom and be a good businesswoman, I needed to give up something.
And what I thought I had to give up was sleep until I collapsed, broke my cheekbone, and came to consciousness in a pool of blood.
And I had to ask myself the question, is this what success looks like?
And that was the beginning of my studying, you know, the new science and also understanding how did we get here.
And it really goes back to the first industrial revolution when we started thinking that human beings were like machines and our job was to minimize downtime, but we're not machines.
What a great insight.
And we, I guess, it becomes part of who we think we are.
And then we just sort of wind the machine up and roll it and it doesn't work.
So because you become a world expert on this, we turned you loose at that pop-up sleep clinic.
So I want you to see how Ariana connected with a few of the women who, just like most of you at home, said sleep was the last thing on their to-do list.
What brings you here today?
Well, I have trouble sleeping, and I think it's because I'm a workaholic.
Takes me a very long time to get to sleep at night and then I'm up in the middle of the night as well.
How many hours of total sleep do you get?
I think like between three to six hours.
So do you know how many hours you need to get?
It takes seven to nine hours, they say.
You and I are very similar.
We are both workaholics.
Yes, yes.
You know, I actually collapsed from sleep deprivation and broke my cheekbone and got four stitches.
Why?
So I'm speaking from personal experience.
You need to create a transition ritual for you, okay?
You know, so that you can prepare yourself for bed.
Got you.
It's not going to happen overnight, but I promise you, building new habits.

I'm Amy.
I don't really sleep.
I don't have enough time for sleep.
I have my own business.
I'm a pastry chef.
So that takes a lot of my time.
When I do sleep, I don't sleep all the way through.
There's never a day that I'm not tired.
Like you, you know, I used to think that I don't have time to sleep.
Right.
That I have too much to do.
Getting enough sleep is actually a productivity tool.
So the first step then is for you to be convinced that sleep is not an optional part of your day.
So we're going to track your sleep.
Okay.
And we are going to keep giving you all the tips and techniques you need to get back on a good sleeping schedule.
And then you are going to begin to see how much more productive you are.

Joining us now is Amy and she's been using a sleep tracker since the clinic to see if her sleep has improved using the tips that you learned there.

I see it runs in families all the time.

Here's your sleep stat from before the clinic.
I'm going to point out, see the four hour, 10 minutes?
That's how much you actually were sleeping.
I don't know what you think you were sleeping, but that's what you actually were sleeping with a monitor.
Right, right.
Is it possible that was true?
100% true.
100% true.
All right.
So since the tips, let's see what kind of a difference.
You're going to see an extra 30 minutes, 45 minutes.
The results after the clinic with the tips that you learned from Ariana, eight hours, 59 minutes.
Which is basically doubling your total sleep.
So, you know, we talk about numbers and all, but it really comes down to how you feel.
How has it changed how you live your life to be able to get a reasonable amount of sleep?
Well, when we were discussing it at a sleep clinic, you said that you couldn't imagine if I was to get proper sleep how much more productive and charismatic I would be.
And you were 100% right because I've really been focusing and not feeling guilty about getting sleep.
And I am not cranky throughout the day.
I don't try and bite people's heads off all day.
You know, you don't want to murder somebody.
So I think the biggest change has been my mood.
Like, I'm a lot nicer to be around, I think.
You're on top of the world.
I could have been hearing your voice.
What were the tips that resonated with you the most?
What made a difference?
Number one, you had mentioned that you do a routine before bedtime.
So I took that to heart and Ariana said, you know, don't watch your DVR.
So the first thing I did was do the routine.
I brushed my teeth, washed my face, and then I didn't watch my DVR.
And that was the hardest part.
That is so key.
If we can just stop for a second, because if there is one technique, one little step that everybody can take is at least 30 minutes before you're going to go to sleep, disconnect all your smartphones, your iPad, your TV.
This is your time to recharge.
So the tips that Ariana gave you work.
And I want everyone to remember this, because if you just glatch onto a couple of these ideas, start with a few small ones.
Remembering that sleep is the single most important thing that you can do for your health that no one else can do for you.

I need my sleep.
It's always been so important to me.
I can't function.
Like, my brain will literally not work.
I'll be miserable, cranky, like arguing with her.
I try to get nine hours, anywhere between seven and nine hours a night, and that's when I'm at my best.
I think it's so underrated.
And I didn't realize for so long why I was so tired and lethargic and maybe creepy at times too.
And it wasn't until I really started getting my nine hours that I would wake up, not need coffee, feel full of life and energy that I realized, oh no, there's something to this going in bed early thing.
Next, Ariana and I are hitting the road.
We got our first customer to hear what you have to say about sleep.
Six to seven hours, four to five hours a night on a good night.
With driving home, just how important it is and how to get more of it.

I try to get eight or nine hours of sleep at night because I find that I think better, my skin looks nicer, my eyes are clear, and I'm in a better mood.

Why am I so tired?
And then so cold and always hungry, which might be related back to the fact that you're so tired.
So we're telling each other what our big problem is.
Ariana Huffington has spent the last decade researching the sleep crisis in America and she's uncovered one of the most fatal mistakes, I mean fatal mistakes that we are making.
A lot of us unfortunately are risking our lives doing this.
What is this risk?
The risk is getting behind the wheel of a car when we are tired.
Do you know what is amazing?
That now more people die or get involved in accidents because of what is known as drowsy driving than drunk driving.
More than drunk driving?
Yes.
We have a whole education process around drug driving.
We have the designated driver campaign.
We say friends don't let friends drive drunk, but we don't say friends don't let friends drive tired.
And now we have over 300,000 accidents a year because of drowsy driving and over 6,000 deaths.
And what a tragedy.
You know, we did a little research on this.
60% of our population admits to driving drowsy.
And you know something?
It's really men, unfortunately, who are the worst culprits because, you know, men are like to brag that they can power through.
So men are tired and they're more likely than women to get behind the wheel of the car and get a coffee or a coke and think that will be the solution.
And then even two seconds of what they call micro sleep, you know, closing your eyes can lead to a tragic accident.
So to figure this out and to raise awareness about drowsy driving, Ariana and I decided to give an Uber driver the night off.

So how is your sleep?
You know, it's not as good as it should be.
A good night, five.
I usually get to six to seven hours, four to five hours a night on a good night.
And how do you feel the next day?
Usually pretty tired, I'm not going to lie.
Do you ever feel like you're not as productive as you could be?
I do.
Yeah, I know it's not good.
I do get pretty cranky when I don't get enough sleep.
The problem with sleep in America is that we put it off in the back burner thinking that it's not critical.
And yet it causes high blood pressure, it causes messed up cholesterol, leads to diabetes, some cancers, but it also affects your mood, your spirit, your creativity.
There will be times where I'm working behind the computer and I have literally worked myself to the point that I can't even think anymore.
When you don't have an Uber driver like me taking you around, do you drive yourself at all?
Yes, all the time.
And do you ever find that you're a little maybe drowsy when you're driving?
You know what?
I have to admit, a couple of times it has definitely happened to me.
I have driven when I was drowsy before and it's not a good feeling.
At a stoplight, I kind of just close my eyes for a second and then open and I know that it's not good.
You're better off having a driver like Dr. Oz available.

It really makes me crave something like sweet.
So I either need like a soda, an energy drink, or some type of candy.
Your brain craves to sleep, and if you can't get to sleep, it's going to crave carbohydrates.
Not just food, carbohydrates.
There's a complete and direct response to the fact that you're depriving your brain of sleep.
So that was actually me driving an Uber shift with Ariana Huffington.
She was my Uber passenger.
Every passenger we picked up, everyone, talked about how they eat more when they're tired.
And there's a brand new study to explain why, because it actually happens to all of us.
So here's the deal.
When you don't sleep enough, and you're tossing and turning in bed, right, what's going on inside your body is the same hormones that give you the munchies after smoking marijuana, those hormones are elevated in your body.
It's an old, ancient response, but it makes it really, really hard for you to resist your favorite foods.
They come pouring into your mouth and more than you ever wanted.
And that hormone peaks, listen carefully, during those bewitching hours in the afternoon.
You know when you just can't hold yourself back, your diet went great, but it's four in the afternoon, you just can't hold back, right?
The people in the study that were sleeping less than five hours a night ending up eating almost 400 extra calories.
If you did that, my friends, 400 extra calories a day, you know what that comes out to in a year?
That's 40 pounds extra in one year just because you didn't sleep.
Now you went through this.
I went through this.
When I was sleep deprived, especially at night, I would think, hey, I need to finish this article or finish this project.
I'll stay up.
And the only way to power through was to eat.
And then I realized after my wake-up call that I would have been better off going to sleep, waking up recharged and doing whatever I did at night in the morning without the food.
So keeping my weight down became so much easier when I started getting enough sleep.
And you know, if anyone watching wants to lose weight, stay in bed an extra hour is preferable to going to the gym.
Have you ever heard that before?
You know, I'm in favor of going to the gym, but only after a full eight hours of sleep in my case.
You know what?
I agree 100% with you.
And I've said this before, and you're right.
Take the extra hour, pamper yourself.
It makes everything else you want to do, including eating less, a lot easier to do.

So, of course, we've all said at some point, tomorrow I'll start that diet, or next week I'll start to eat healthy, not today, right?
Or maybe at the new year, I'll start to save, or maybe I'll start to earn more money.
But someday is not a day of the week, Dr. Oz right.
It's not on the calendar, and we don't have to wait to start having healthy financial habits.
I hope it's not a strategy.
Today, we're giving you one.
I want to get everyone on the path to financial success.
We'll get right to their real money questions.
The first one comes from Osmilda.
I have a son that I want to raise to be a financially responsible adult.
What do you wish that someone had taught you about finances while growing up?
That is so important.
Money is a weapon.
People fear it, but they shouldn't.
They shouldn't.
And what do I wish someone would have taught me?
Wow, I wish someone would have told me not to model the behavior that I saw growing up as a child.
Now, I love my mom to death, Dr. Ah.
She's the best mom I've ever had in my life, right?
But I did see.
I don't know, mom.
But I did see her model some unhealthy behavior.
So when I was a little girl, my mom and I spent a lot of time going shopping.
Every weekend, that was our thing.
That's how we bonded.
And I would have my little purse, something similar to this.
And my mom, you know, of course, I want to be like my mom.
And she would give me her expired credit card.
And I, as a little girl, would go to the store with her all the time and use the expired credit cards in line with her.
And she and all the ladies at the department stores would say, oh my God, look at her.
She's so cute with her credit cards.
But when I got to college and ended up in $18,000 of credit card debt, no one said that was cute anymore.
So I'm a mother now.
And as a parent, we have to model better behavior.
So now you just give your daughter cash.
I make her earn it, though.
I make her work for it.
All right.

Now I hear Sheila's got a good question.
Where's Sheila?
There she is.
Hi, I am a mom of two teenage daughters.
I work really hard, but they need a lot of stuff.
We spend a lot of money.
I need to know how I can budget and bring down those credit cards.
Right.
So one thing that you said, Sheila, that stands out to me though is that I work really hard.
And so anybody else identify with that?
I work really hard, right?
So here's the thing though that I realize that I've realized over the years is that lack of fulfillment on the job can really lead to lack of financial discipline.
And so some of the things that you're probably buying your girls are not necessarily needs.
They're probably wants, right?
And so when you're in a job where you might feel overworked or overwhelmed and even underpaid, it tends to put you in this cycle where you want to fill the void with stuff, with buying more stuff.
And that's never going to fill the void at all.
So instead of even saying, I work hard and I deserve this or that, I want you to say that I deserve to do work that I love and managing my money better.

It's a good philosophy just to change the texture of it.

Okay, so I'm trying to save, invest, and budget my money.
Where do I start in order to get control of my finances again?
Where do you start to get control of your finances?
Now, here's another thing that I love to say is that when your financial life is out of order, typically your financial documents are probably out of order too.
And so getting your financial documents in order is a wonderful place to start.
And it doesn't have to be a lot.
You can use a simple system, something like this here, and you're going to use a file cabinet or a little plastic container like this and get all of your financial documents.
Because if you're looking for a bank statement, Janae, at the bottom of your purse or, you know, in the glove compartment of your car or in a junk drawer in your kitchen, then there's probably some things out of order there.
And in order for you to feel empowered and relieve the stress and really feel like you have a head start on getting your finances in order, start with a simple system like this.
Organize your financial life and you'll start to feel empowered.
That's a great first step.
Let me ask one last question.

Is how can I budget without feeling deprived?
This is analogous to the first issue around health and wealth being similar.
It's like how do you go on a diet without being deprived?
What's your thought?
Well, you know, I don't think that budgeting is about deprivation at all.
I think that budgeting is about creating discipline.
And we've become a society that looks at budgeting as the new B word.
It's a bad word.
Don't say it.
I don't want to hear about it.
What's the B word?
Budget.
Oh.
I thought it stood for something else.
No, we look at it like it's a bad word.
Like budgeting is the new B word, right?
No one wants to say it.
We furrow our brows when we think about it.
The reality is if you've made budgeting a bad word for you, call it something else.
Call it something more favorable.
I have clients that call it a prosperity plan or my financial freedom plan.
Whatever it takes to help you stay committed to it, then change the name.

I think, I mean, right now it's all about just social media.
So it's websites and it's like, you know, I can't even came up.
I like tried Snapchat for the first time today.
So I'm trying to like keep up.
But it's like, you know, people are trying to do everything.
Everything's filtered and perfect.
And I think there's, you know, all this pressure on, especially women, just to have it all.
So it's hard.
And why do you feel comfortable being a guinea pig?
All these different things.
You are.
You try things I would never imagine doing.
I think in order to speak about something, you have to try it first.
True enough.
Yeah.
What's the craziest thing you've tried?
Oh, the craziest thing?
That you could mention on television.
Oh.
As far as health things, I think one of the worst things I tried was the master cleanse.
The master cleanse.
You did that?
Yeah.
Well, I tried.
You all know what that master cleanse is?
Yeah, you put a little lemonade, right?
And then you put, actually, come on over here.
I've made you a master cleanse.
So this is a cool technique that's been used by many.
You've got lemonade, you've got, I guess, cayenne pepper, right?
And maple syrup.
That's the foundation of it.
Yes.
You know, I gotta say, the cleanse is not very good for weight loss.
Yeah.
But I'm not sure why people think.
So what do you do?
What works for you for weight loss?
For me, it's so boring.
It's eating healthy and not too much.
That's the same thing.
Yes, I've tried everything and that's the only thing that works for me.
And it's simple things.
Like if I'm going to eat bread or carbs, try and do that early in the day.
Do like an avocado toast for breakfast.
And so you're going to burn it off during the day.
But for the most part, it's so boring.
So why?
Yeah, but it might be boring, but it works.
Why can't most people do that?
Because it's hard.
It's hard to be able to prepare your own food.
It's so much easier just to grab food to go.
And it's a lot.
It's like a little job.
So do you automate your life?
Is that how you make sure you have that avocado toast ready to go in the morning?
I try to.
I think it's just planning ahead.
But yeah, I mean, when I get really busy, I definitely slip up and I'm eating a lot of takeout and stuff.
You can't really cook dinner.
Well, the next thing we're going to talk about is not a takeout idea.
This is an extreme weight loss trend that we've been hearing about.
These are these slimming body wraps.
Yes.
So please explain this to everybody because I have no experience with these at all.
Okay, so this I'm actually a fan of.
And this is something like if you have a wedding coming up or if you're going on vacation, you're going to be in a bikini.
This is like sort of a quick fix.
It's really just water weight.
But instead of doing like a crash diet, this is kind of a nice option.
So it's essentially you do sort of a full body mask and it's all different things.
You have some of them here.
So like the eucalyptus, the butter, I think they put like cinnamon.
Butter?
You butter yourself up?
I haven't personally done butter, but people do.
I like the ones with something like, I think there's like cayenne pepper in it.
It's kind of spicy, but like the spicier ones are kind of nice.
Right, so you mix these up.
Is that chocolate?
It's chocolate.
I'd eat chocolate.
It's chocolate butter and chocolate in here, but I, yeah.
And seaweed with it.
Seaweed, yeah.
Right, so you mix these up into water.
Yeah, so you mix them up in a mask and you cover yourself and then you wrap yourself up in ace bandages.

So that's that's wet, right?
Theoretically?
Yes, it should be.
Well, you can do them like put them in the microwave and get them nice and hot.

Yeah, and then you take saran wrap into it, and then you can put on several layers, and essentially just sweat it out.
This is like wearing a cumber bun, but not comfortable.
Great.
Yeah, I mean, well, if you're a woman, this is like normal.
And you sit there like that for 45 minutes.
I mean, do you lose weight?
Yes, I've actually, in one time, I think I lost like three pounds in water weight.
I mean, it's back in like a day and a half, but if you want something quick.
I have no idea why this works as a doctor, but if it works for you, I'll trust you.

So we're not going to push people too hard on this, but give me the broad idea.
How do you possibly make it happen?
So I think that one of the things is when you're starting to plan a party, it can be very stressful.
So we have a vision board here kind of talking about different ideas to avoid stress.
So one of the things I suggest is following the rules.
And that doesn't always apply because I think rules are meant to be broken, like make events your own.
But for more traditional events like a wedding or a bridal shower, sometimes the rules are there for a reason.
They're there so people's feelings don't get hurt and you know you kind of have guidelines to go by, which is nice.
I think the place you follow the rules mostly for me anyway is who you invite and don't invite.
Because if you break that rule, then it's a slippery slope.
Yes, or who's responsible for what?
There's all, yeah.
Look, that's delegation, right?
Who's responsible?
So delegate, yes.
Yes.
So Deli, don't be afraid to delegate.
So for example, I really love arranging flowers.
So oftentimes I'll do that for one of my friends' parties.
And I love doing it.
It's really fun.
It takes the pressure off them.
So don't be afraid to ask your friends to help out.
And you are going to set a budget, but most people go over their budget.
Yeah, so it's important to set it ahead of time.
And I always recommend at least a 10% buffer.
So you kind of look at it all and leave a little wiggle room because at the end of the day, if you go over your budget, that's no good.
But what if, like, that tends to happen?
It's a catastrophe.
Things just don't work out the way they're supposed to work out.
Pour yourself a glass of wine and I mean, at the end of the day, like, you can't do anything.
You're all there.
Like, be there to celebrate.
It is something come on and brown.
It's something that's interesting, I find, in the way you write about this.
I mean, times when people would think that they were sloppy and they weren't proud about it, you seem that's not a big deal.
You don't have to be perfect.
No, you don't.
I think, I mean, that's what celebrating is all about, is getting together with people you love and having fun.
So, like, a lot of people will stress out over, you know, perfect little details, and Pinterest does this.
Like, everything is so perfect.
But at the end of the day, like, do your best, you know, entertain your guests, and everyone's going to have a great time.
Put your hair up in a bun.
All right.
So, I want to show everyone the kind of party foods you speak to.
Now, you got a tough challenge here because I'm not the best party guest, because I'm really picky about the food.
And I complain about things.
I don't want hot dogs.

I mean, for example, what is this?

I've never had green hummus.

One of the things about entertaining is if you don't have a bartender, you're constantly making drinks the whole time.
