Jussie Smollett Speaks on the Attack and His Fight Against HIV | Dr. Oz | S10 | Ep 98 | Full Episode
| Copy link to current segment

Time Text
Dr. Roz, Jussie Smollett, an intimate conversation.
How much did he reveal?
Could this interview provide any clues to what may have happened that night?
There are so many things ravaging our communities, you know what I'm saying?
From mass incarceration to racial profiling to police battery, whatever it may be.
And us exclusive.
Coming up next. Season 10 starts now.
It was the alleged attack heard round the world.
Empire star Jussie Smollett tells police he was attacked by two masked men at 2 a.m. near his Chicago apartment on January 29th.
According to Smollett, the assailants were white and used homophobic and racial slurs against him.
He's also claiming they put a rope around his neck and poured a chemical substance on him.
Police have been investigating the case as a possible hate crime.
Since then, two men who had small roles on Empire and were known to Jussie are allegedly claiming they were paid to be part of a hoax.
A grand jury is now investigating.
This is a complex situation.
It calls for time for the police and authorities to fully investigate before jumping to conclusions.
I had the chance to sit down with Jussie to talk about his role on Empire and his mission to end the AIDS epidemic.
I revisited that interview to see if there are any clues as to what might have happened to Jussie Smollett.
I started my interview by asking Jussie how his life had changed since becoming a household name.
I mean, I want to believe that I haven't changed because I, you know, I think that if this happened, I'm in my 30s, so it's like, you know, if this happened when I was a teenager or, you know, in my 20s, maybe it would have been a different situation.
But I feel like when it happened for me, I was very already grounded and certain of who I am.
And I think that I'm blessed and grateful that it's happening now because I'm able to navigate my own thoughts and my own life much easier than I would have at 21 versus 31.
You know what I'm saying?
So I think a lot of people around me have changed.
You know, the experiences have kind of heightened.
But I'm the same dude.
I think I like to do the same things.
You know what I'm saying?
But definitely it's given me a platform as well.
You know what I'm saying?
It's given me a platform to talk about and tell the stories that I care about and that mean a lot to me.
So that's probably the best thing.
I actually didn't realize you're not just acting, you're directing some of the episodes.
I don't know how if you all realize, but I guess that Taraja P. Henson, so I guess, you know, I actually spent the U.S. Open with her.
Oh, really?
I got shoved around by her the whole time.
I'm sure.
What was it like?
There you go.
There it is.
That's the real picture from just a few months ago.
What is it like directing her?
Does she follow instructions?
Maybe to no, she don't follow nothing.
She's incredible.
She's incredible.
She gives me a hard time on purpose, and it's because I give her such a hard time just in real life in general.
So she, whenever I go up to her, I'm like, Taraji, you think you could maybe think about, you know, doing this?
She's like, nah, I don't want to do it that way.
And it just is what it is.
But she always ends up delivering.
And I love, the love that I have for that woman, I don't think is even, I could possibly describe.
I just love her from her little toe to the top of her head.
Oh, I did.
So this season on Empire, Jussie's character is featured in an important storyline about HIV and AIDS.
It's actually really important to me.
You all take a look at this.
African Americans represent 12% of the population.
You all know that, but account for 44% of HIV diagnoses.
Jussie is on a mission to stop the spread of HIV and AIDS, particularly in the black community.
Just share with us why you think, why are you so passionate about Empire sharing this information with this audience?
I just think that we have a very, very special opportunity and platform at Empire to, that the eyes are on us.
You know what I'm saying?
And I think that for a show that says that we are rooted in pop culture, we would be frauds if we didn't acknowledge everything in pop culture.
You can't just acknowledge flat tummy tea and not, you know what I'm saying, and not acknowledge the facts of real life.
And the fact is, is that this is something that is, although we're not talking about it as much, it's still something that is very real.
And I know that there are so many things to care about in the world that we're in, particularly right now.
But we as a people have always multitasked.
You know what I'm saying?
So we just have to stay focused on the mission at hand and stop thinking that we get a couple steps forward and then we can just push it to the side because we're not done yet.
You said that you believe this issue of HIV/AIDS has become a side story.
That's your loving word in Hollywood.
Why do you think that's the case?
Because there's so many, and that's not to say anything bad about people.
This is the thing, is like there are so many things that we care about in this world, so many things that are ravaging our communities.
You know what I'm saying?
From mass incarceration to racial profiling to police battery, whatever it may be, there's so many things that we are here to care about.
But it can't be, I feel like sometimes, especially in storytelling, it's become the side project or the side story.
And I think that with shows like How to Get Away with Murder and Pose and now with Empire, we're able to tackle certain subjects that people don't.
And you know, this is the other thing, is that to me, one of the most spectacular pieces about this storyline, being able to tell this storyline, is seeing the journey that Cookie goes through.
Because all too often we forget, we only think about the two people that are in the relationship.
We only think about the person that is infected.
And we forget to think about the people that are not.
She didn't say the things that she said because she's mean or because she's evil.
She said the things because she's misinformed.
You know what I'm saying?
So it's about informing people so that they know you can not only survive, but you can thrive with this.
You can live and you can love.
And it's not, to me, it's about taking, we won't be able to eradicate the disease until we eradicate the stigma.
And along with that, it comes honesty.
And I think that we're able to entertain while educate.
And what better thing for an artist than to be able to do that?
Up next, Jussie speaks out about what he calls the most important work of his life.
Stay with us.
This is the man of God that's in our lives.
We know that he's been molesting you.
Nobody would make this up.
He began to cross the line.
He would give you uncomfortably long hugs, kisses.
We've had five or six hundred animals in the house.
Five or six hundred?
That's coming up tomorrow.
The reported attack on Justice Smollett has made international headlines.
I had the chance to sit down with the star about his mission to eradicate HIV and AIDS.
And now we take a look back on that interview to see if there were any clues about what was to come.
Just I were joined by Phil Wilson, founder of the Black AIDS Institute.
Thank you for being here.
God bless you.
Phil has been my mentor since I was 15 years old.
Is that right?
Yeah, absolutely.
And there's nothing that I can't call Phil about.
You know, being a gay man, being a gay black man, being able to call Phil and be like Phil, you know, ask him any questions that maybe you're embarrassed to ask someone else.
But I can call this man and I can depend on him.
And that's why I just, so I have to say, like, I love Phil with all my heart.
So let me give you the platform a little bit.
What was the most important goal you had when you made this part of the Empire storyline?
Well, there are three things that I really want to see happen.
One is to help people who are living with HIV understand that they can disclose and how to do that.
Two, basically, for people who receive the information, how you can react when someone you love or care about shares with you that they're living with HIV, particularly if it's an intimate relationship, you know, and what are the possibilities there.
And three, you know, individuals get infected, but families and communities get affected.
And that is really important.
So you diagnosed, if I can share this, 30 years ago.
35 years ago now.
Yes.
That is fantastic.
Yes.
And that fact right there is really important for us to all get out because most people don't recognize this is an ailment you can live with.
There's still stigma around it.
Why?
Why are we still facing this problem?
And I know we don't even have access to healthcare the way we need to for a lot of folks.
Well, give me a second to kind of respond to my living with HIV for 35 years.
You know, I've been living with HIV for 35 years because I'm on treatment.
You know, this is what HIV looks like on treatment.
The tragedy is so many people, particularly in black communities, aren't on treatment.
One of the drivers around that is stigma.
And that when there's a stigmatizing environment, people are not going to find out that the HIV is positive.
They're not going to get tested.
They're not going to seek treatment.
They're not going to stay in treatment.
And they're not going to disclose.
And the epidemic goes on.
And so stigma is critically important.
The other thing that's really important is that we really have the tools today to end the AIDS epidemic.
There are no reasons why anyone ever has to get infected today.
You know, I'm on treatment.
That means that I can't transmit the virus if I take my meds.
Now, undetectable, which is what I am, means that you're untransmissible.
On the other side of the equation, as Jamal talks about on the show, there's PrEP.
One pill a day provides over 90% protection from HIV infection.
And you get to control your own health.
You put those two things together and we break the back of the epidemic.
And it's important to talk about the fact that for PrEP, I don't think that a lot of people realize that this is not, and that's why further on in the scene, and it was an added line, and it was so important to me to add the fact that this isn't just for gay people.
You know what I'm saying?
This isn't just something that women can be on PrEP.
You know what I'm saying?
It does not matter.
It's about protecting yourself.
And at the end of the day, people just don't know.
We've seemed to put, a part of the stigma is also putting it on a group of people.
You know what I'm saying?
And believing that somehow it's theirs.
And then we ignore it because we don't feel that it affects us when it actually does.
So PrEP is an all-around thing that I'm firmly supporting.
It's important that women understand that you don't have to depend on someone else to protect yourself, that you can be empowered to own your own health.
And PrEP allows them to do that.
You know what I love?
It's your passion for this.
Thank you.
Thank you for being here.
God bless you, man.
There is no arguing that the work Jesse has done to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS is admirable.
We still don't know what happened the day Jesse Spolet says he was attacked.
But we all need to take a step back and reserve judgment until the facts are fully vetted.
Jussie's attorneys have released a statement on his behalf saying, as a victim of a hate crime who has cooperated with the police investigation, Jesse Spolled is angered and devastated by recent reports that the perpetrators are individuals he's familiar with.
He has now been further victimized by claims attributed to these alleged perpetrators that Jesse played a role in his own attack.
Nothing is further from the truth and anyone claiming otherwise is lying.
You can read the full statement on Dr.Oz.com.
We also reached out to Jussie's team and they responded with the following statement.
There are no plans for Jussie Smollett to meet with Chicago police today.
Now, they said that to us on Monday.
Any news reports suggesting otherwise are inaccurate.
Smollett's attorneys will keep an active dialogue going with Chicago police on his behalf.
We're going to stay on top of this story and keep our viewers updated as we learn more.
We'll be right back.
I love getting to talk with you on my show every single day.
But when the cameras stop rolling, the conversation is not over.
I still have a lot that I want to talk about.
So download the Dr. Oz podcast on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Thank you very much.
Today in our week-long addictive series, Confessions from Athleisure Addicts.
We investigate this obsession and the surprising link we've uncovered between these pants and pain and if they're actually a gateway into letting your health and your weight slide.
Ever since we uncovered the truth about the germs hiding in your athleisure, a whole army of you came forward about the clothes that most of you consider to be your second skin.
And they're all here today.
The response was overwhelming.
Okay, so I have a confession to make about these yoga pants.
I don't just wear them in yoga.
I wear them everywhere.
For the past 12 years, all I've worn is leggings and yoga pants.
That's 4,380 days to be exact.
I also wore them to birthday parties, work events, Christmas parties, my cousin's christening.
Dr. Oz, I have a confession to make.
My yoga pants are my skinny pants.
After our junk food binge, I put these pants and they're my instant skinny.
Is this normal, Dr. Oz?
Could this be the reason also why I haven't had a date in 12 years?
Just what is an athleisure addict?
Here to help me define it with a quiz.
It's one of the biggest athleisure addicts that I know personally, Carolina Bermudez.
Welcome to the show again.
Well, thank you for having me, Dr. Oz.
I go visit her all the time on the radio show, and this is what you look like.
Or some variation, but closely similar to this.
Totally.
I was saying how I've done your show so many times, but this is the most comfortable I've ever been because I'm wearing my yoga pants for you.
I am proud of you, but we'll find out if that's the right move.
So, besides basic comfort, why are so many women obsessed with athleisure?
Well, you know what?
It's a combination of things because athleisure, you see it on Fashion Forward celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Gigi Hadid.
And if they can wear it, then we think we can wear it too.
But also, if you pack on a couple of pounds, you don't really feel it because they're so stretchy.
It's almost like they're comforting.
Yes.
Comforting is the right way to think of it, but all, and I get the comfort food, comfort, clothes, they seem to go together.
We're investigating, everybody, the tricks that these are playing on you, especially when it comes to gaining weight.
So we got a quiz to get everyone to be honest about this.
I want everyone to take it at home to find out if you are an athleisure addict.
My whole audience is here.
They have their athletia gear with them, right?
You all dressed up?
They look great.
I like this, actually.
Athleisure, athleisure.
They all, well, actually, I didn't have to even say anything.
You all came like this pretty much anyway.
So grab paper and a pen.
I want you all to pay attention to this.
Caroline, take it away with the first question.
Okay, so first question is, is your wardrobe motto, if it doesn't stretch, I won't wear it?
Yes or no?
Honest answers here.
Question number two on the quiz.
Now, do you own more athleisure style of pants than any other pants?
Hmm.
That's going to be tough.
I see some people who look guilty over there, Dr. No, they're counting.
They're counting.
The fact that it's been a race is a problem.
Who raised yes?
Who said yes to that, by the way?
See, look.
It's overwhelming.
I mean, a lot of people own more athleisure pants than regular pants now.
Let me ask you: where's the strangest place you ever wore in athleisure pants?
I mean, I wore them to my work Christmas party and I wear them to church.
Oh, the church and Christmas party.
That covers all the bases.
All right, the last question.
Keep track, everybody.
Last one.
Okay, so do you feel skinnier and more confident when you're wearing your yoga pants?
We had one no and lots of yeses.
All right, tally up all your yeses.
Again, I'm looking for an honest audience.
I know you are.
All right, so I bet some members of my audience answered yes to all of these questions.
But here's the honest truth from me: nobody in my studio audience, nobody on my staff even, is safe today because I've asked your friends and your family to turn in the biggest athleisure addicts you know.
Are you getting nervous?
Yeah, exactly.
You are.
Let's get to our first turn in.
A woman in the audience is outing her cousin for owning more, listen carefully, to 100 pairs of yoga pants.
Take a look.
I love my cousin, but she has a major athleisure addiction.
She wears them everywhere to work, to the grocery store, even when we're going to a fancy dinner.
She doesn't have one black pair, she has a hundred of them.
Dr. Ross, can you take a look at these drawers?
So, Marissa is here with her.
Is that Ryan?
Hi, Ryan.
But first of all, Ryan, thank you for turning her in.
Was it hard to do?
Yes, it was.
I just wanted her to know that she has way too many yoga pants.
Any words of kindness towards Ryan?
Wait till we get home, is all I have to say.
Come on over here.
Ryan can hold that for you.
Actually, let me just take one quick look.
Well, you know what?
Bring them.
This is good.
All yeses, I should point out.
All yeses.
Come on over here for a second.
So thank you for being with us.
Are you surprised that Ryan turned you in?
I mean, I'm a little surprised that she did this, but no, because she constantly tells me that I wear way too many yoga pants.
So, I gotta say, you said yes to all of these.
Yes.
There's the evidence.
And let me, if I can't, just show you something.
These are actually all your yoga pants.
We were let in.
Here we are.
Oh, my God.
Yoga.
Oh, my God.
Basically, you can do every sport you want with these.
Oh, my name is a small fortune.
How long has it been?
First of all, just looking at this.
I mean, did you ever realize how many you had?
No, I did not.
The cameras can't even see you.
I mean, you're under here.
Here, come over to the side here so we can see this is crazy.
So, as you look at this, are you a little stunned?
A little, yes.
I did not realize I had this many.
Yeah, and when was the last time you actually wore real pants?
I couldn't even tell you.
What is it that you adore besides these wonderful colors?
What attracts you to this?
They're just very comfortable.
They make me feel comfortable.
They make me feel slim, pretty.
Well, those are important.
I get it.
And there are lots of different occasions you can wear them too.
This is more than I ever thought I'd see anyone ever buy.
But what I've learned since tackling this topic is, Marissa, you're not alone.
Yeah, Ryan, do you wear, you know, you have jeans on?
She's showing off.
I'm sure she has some of these as well.
So, up next question, everybody.
Could you need an athleisure intervention and not know it?
This time I'm turning an athletia addict in.
I'm going to do the turn-in.
Pay attention.
This is the man of God that's in our lives.
We know that he's been molesting you.
You believe the church knew about this all along.
It did nothing to stop it.
All new oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
We are back with a plan to help you overcome your athleisure addiction.
Investigative reporter Carolina Bermudez, self-proclaimed athleisure addict, Marissa, are back.
They're both actually in that category.
Marissa, you own 100 pairs, very colorful ones, but 100 pairs of yoga pants.
Carolina says something very important.
She says the first step is to understand ourselves, to ask ourselves a very important question.
Yeah, I think it's important for us to gain perspective.
So when you're getting dressed in the morning, ask yourself, why am I relying on these pants?
Is it something that I'm missing that I'm not looking into as far as like, you know, am I not feeling as confident as I should?
Or is there something that I can be working on?
Because you got to get back into the regular pants, girl, you know?
You know, I asked everybody as I was getting ready for this why they wore athleisure.
They always said it was comfortable.
But I think the deeper issue is what you just said.
They need to be comfortable in their own bodies, not just in the clothes that they're wearing.
Absolutely.
That's getting at that issue.
Yeah, and I think that you present yourself.
It's the way that you present yourself to the world.
So, you know, there is a time and place to be comfortable, but then there's also a time and place to present yourself as you should be, as the beautiful woman that you are.
So, a confidence.
All right, so step number two to break free from the athletia addiction is a rule around how often you wear these, but it's not just about not wearing them ever again.
Walk us through the one day on, three days off roll, please.
Sure.
So, okay, you shouldn't have to stop this cold turkey.
So, what I suggest is doing one day on, three days off.
So, let's look at Sunday.
You can wear your yoga pants on Sunday.
You want to relax a little bit with the family.
Then, check yourself for Monday, Tuesday, and then you can go back to the yoga pants on Thursday.
You give yourself a little bit of a break, and then that's how you cut through the cycle.
Do you own a pair of jeans?
I think I own two pairs.
Two pairs.
So, I'd have to recycle those?
It's okay.
As long as you have eight pairs, I'm okay.
So, it's a hundred pairs of the other ones, two jeans.
We'll figure that out.
Yeah, but Dr. Oz, we're women.
We always look for excuses to go shopping.
So, this is your excuse.
Okay, thank you.
Next step is to limit athlesia to five hours a day.
Dr. Gilbert, why is that a key number for you?
So, in addition to weakening the core, if you wear these pants and they're too tight, you can compress the nerves, you can get numbness and tingling down the sides of your legs, you can worsen your reflux, you can get yeast infections, you can get skin infections.
So, the bottom line is: too much of a good thing becomes a bad thing.
Dr. Gilbert, thank you very much.
Coming over here, I have a last idea that may help both of you out.
Because, Marissa, I wasn't asking you about the jeans because I'm curious about what your habits are, but I also know there's a possible solution here.
Because one of the biggest tips of all is to find Lycra jeans.
Because lycra jeans might give you a good combo you might be able to get away with.
Could that work for you, Kishon?
Awesome.
Yeah, I like this.
May I get you a little present?
Since Tarissa's here, there's one for you.
And I thought these looked good on you.
Yeah, we did.
Enjoy in good health.
Give it a shot.
This is just simple tips.
You're all into this athletia.
I want you to bring sports in your athletia wear.
Try these things out to be stylish as well.
And you'll be comfortable on the inside.
Thanks for Carolina, as always.
God bless you all.
We'll be right back.

I'm an iron chef, but mostly the executive chef of Butter Restaurant and mother to an 11-year-old.
This is the first recipe I ever made in a professional kitchen.
They were terrible.
My cooking is like me.
A mix of Caribbean heat, meat, southern sweet.
This is like my girlfriend in the kitchen.
I am as a chef, first and foremost about flavor.
It's simple, it's celebratory, and most of all, it's about having a great time in the kitchen.
What is going on?
I'm trying to help.
Let's dish.
Welcome to the fish hot odds.
Ladies, we have a show to make.
Come on over.
They're putting their coffees on their popcorn.
If you're gearing up for the Oscars this weekend, you're not going to want to miss what's on the menu today.
Are you still making popcorn?
Oh, my goodness.
Look there.
Great carpet ready.
We're ready.
Still want to pop away.
Hi.
Separating women from popcorn is very risky.
I did it today for a good reason because you got so much to talk about in the show today.
Daffy, take it away.
My gosh, I just want to dive into this right now.
If you love movies as much as you love food, you are going to love our Oscar party.
Oscar David.
Our favorite movie-inspired recipes, and the nominees are When Alex Met Sandwich.
Follow her journey to the restaurant that inspired the big scene from when Harry met Sally.
Will their sandwich make her swoon like Meg Ryan?
Oh, yes.
Stay soon to find out.
Then, a Mystic Pizza Sequel.
We're trying out the hottest new health-trended sweet potato crust pizza.
Jordan's going to give us a rest for that.
And we're giving you the Hollywood Fruity Red Carpet Slim Down Secret.
So much in this show, I can't stand it.
So I hope you're happy.
I brought you some Nori Popsmore.
Nori pops up.
Very healthy.
By the way, I have champagne.
Thank you.
I noticed you diving into the condomins over there, but I got seaweed there.
There are all kinds of spices.
There was no butter.
Dried seaweed.
You don't like that?
There was no butter, Dr. Oscar.
Better than butter.
Isn't it better than butter?
Yeast.
How about the traditional yeast?
Nothing yeast is really good.
No, that's a good cheese.
It gives it a nutty, almost cheesy flavor.
Yeah, when I open the fridge, I say nutritional yeast, butter, definitely yeast.
Always.
I actually do.
I love nutritional yeast on my popcorn.
Pig butter and salt.
It does taste like cheese.
What'd you put on yours?
You put something in.
I got the nutritional yeast and a little Cajun and a little bit of hot sauce.
Just a little dash.
I'm keeping it spicy.
I just, I didn't do the Cajun.
I did hot sauce, Nori, and nutritional yeast.
Nice.
That's good.
It's burning a little.
Slow market.
Alice, grab me some.
There's literally nothing on this.
It's just dry popcorn.
It's very light.
Very light.
Very light.
It's got seaweed on it.
It's a little seaweed low salt.
It was a piece of a seaweed.
It's singular.
Just a tiny little bit.
I didn't want to overdo it.
When it comes to the movies, what is it?
Right.
Okay.
So, first, I pack a bag.
I put like papers and books on top so it looks innocent.
And then underneath it, I have, you know, the chocolate, little dark chocolate antioxidants, a little bit of cinnamon candies and stuff for a little spice.
Champagne.
A little champagne, a bottle of champagne.
Yeah, the small one.
Oh, wow, the big one.
Oh, the big one.
Okay.
And I cover it with books and stuff.
A sweatshirt.
You look like you just came from the gym or the library or whatever.
Has anyone ever caught you walking in like a bag lady with all the champagne balls?
Busted.
A little busted.
I got boxed in a movie theater.
I feel like the second you crack that thing open, everyone around you is like, by then, your movie has started and they can't make a destruction during the movie.
Very good point.
So the Oscar is coming up this weekend.
Obviously, everyone is making their wages on who's going to win Best Picture.
Let's predict the future right here.
Who are you guys predicting?
Best Picture winner.
Oh, gosh.
A star is born for me.
Black Panther?
Oh, no.
A star is boring.
Yes.
Okay.
Oh, no.
Yes.
Love her.
You want Black Panther?
We'll come forever.
Oh, yes.
No, Osha Forever.
Yeah.
Oh, no, no, no.
Okanda forever.
But Michael B. Jordan forever.
He gets my Oscar.
No way.
The women of Wakanda forever.
There were women in that movie?
Yes.
They were so Michael B. Jordan.
They were so beautiful and so strong.
How about you?
Well, my daughter is all about Bohemian Rhapsody and Freddie Mercury, but I'm going to go with an underdog.
I'm picking an underdog.
I'm picking Roma.
Dad, I'm going to assume you did not watch any of the Astro Museums.
No, I'm big.
I'm bad that I don't have kids at home.
Fantastic.
I'm going to go with your daughter.
Bohemian Rhapsody.
Oh, I saw them all.
They're all picked up.
All right.
Well, you go to Oscars as they're going in between all their celebrations, this and that.
We have time for games.
So, it does got something for us.
You know, I love that game, and it is the Oscars.
So, okay, so this game, I'm going to pull up one of the domes, and under it is a food that represents a famous favorite movie.
Okay, so you got to yell out the movie name when I draw it.
The audience hold on.
Sure, there you hear me.
We're going to yell it out with us.
Now, don't cheat, because I know the answer.
So, everybody, play along, all right?
So, we're ready for number one?
Yes.
Boom!
Can we see that?
What is this?
Buccini.
I'm gonna do it!
Oh, yes!
Oscar goes to Oscar.
Right on Joe!
Yay!
We got her!
All right, we got one more, one more.
All right, I'm failing at that.
Can we all see this?
Spaghetti, any Italian foodie ever.
Lady in the tram.
Lady in the tram.
Lady of the tram, man.
All right.
You might have to kiss it out because I'm not.
I got it.
We gotta do it.
I love this.
So much fun.
That was a little fun.
You got me with that one.
Let's get to one of the most famous food movie moments of all time: the deli scene from when Harry met Sally.
You all remember, I'll have what she's having.
Well, Alex took her boyfriend, Michael, to have what she had for food.
Risky, though.
Take a look at this.
We got a film.
New York, New York.
The location, the iconic Catsus Deli.
This is it, I've never been here.
The goal: see if the food is as good as it was in the movie when Harry met Sally.
Hello, hello.
Hey, how's it going?
Welcome.
We have a first-timer.
First time, never been.
What should we order?
Any of the hot meats can't go wrong.
A little pasrami, a little corned beef, brisket, turkey, anything like that.
That's really what we're known for.
It's the best.
All of it.
Okay, how much time do you got?
We're going to feed you everything.
We don't know how you guys do things here.
Will you show us?
Yeah, I'll teach you guys a little bit about pashrami.
It's definitely our most popular.
We go through about 15 to 20,000 pounds of pasrami every week.
It's a navel, so it's a very juicy, very tender cut kind of like.
You really feel like a kid in the candy store life.
Okay.
And it just tastes like pure meat.
You can't even talk.
Give me a minute.
The Harry Met Salad table is right there.
Go have a seat.
We'll get a nice meal together for you guys.
Oh my God, I'm in Sally's seat.
Wow.
We got some sandwiches here for you.
We got the lattice, which I gorgeous.
Highly recommend.
I could probably cut this in half, but I think it'd be fun.
Oh, no.
We got a matzo ball soup.
Perfect for it.
Like today.
Cheers.
A little romantic Harry Met Salad.
Cheers.
This is a privileged seed food like this.
Just snap on this pickle.
I'll try to pop right now.
How are we doing?
This is so, you know how you're doing a TV segment, you take a bite, you say thank you so much.
I literally am like a savage unloader.
Is that whole myth really true about Rob Reiner's mom in that scene?
Oh no, she was, yeah, that was 100% Rob Reiner's.
Who said the famous line will have what she's having.
Even better than that, an improv group kind of choreographed this, faking it, and everyone faked it at the same time.
Flash mob.
Oh.
Hi!
If I did a flash mob of our friends, we'd all be eating sandwiches.
Thank you for coming.
Your lesson is complete.
You have five minutes to eat and get the hell out of here.
I'm gonna turn over this table.
That was so great.
I can't.
She was watching herself.
She was watching her movie Eating Popcorn.
You were like this.
I know.
I want to watch my boyfriend all the time.
All right, we come back.
We're reeling over more.
See what I'm doing there?
Reeling over more movie food moments.
Jordan's taking us the mystic pizza with a new sweet potato twist and a classic dish.
You're gonna love it.
Stick around.
This is the man of God that's in our lives.
We know that he's been molesting you.
You cross the line.
I'm gonna give you uncomfortably long hugs.
Kisses.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Slate.
Singing is my first passion from winning American Idol to Grammy nomination, platinum albums.
But another passion of mine was that I love to bake.
Spread the chocolate and you want to cover as much as you can.
Hosting my baking show, Heart of the Batter, has been so much fun that I love sharing my recipes.
Okay, we're gonna put them back in for about five minutes.
I grew up in the kitchen with my mom and Nana baking, and it was one of those things that made me happy inside.
I'm a new mom, and it is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me.
And he loves being in the kitchen too.
Some people do salt, I do sugar.
Maybe add a little bit more sweetness to it.
Baking for people is like making music for them.
It makes them feel good, and it makes me happy to see them feel good.
We are back with a dish on Oz, and we're throwing the ultimate Oscars party, sharing our favorite movie-inspired recipes.
It's pronounced Ozcurs.
Oh, Ozzy.
Oz.
Excuse me.
I stand correct.
It's not an accident.
That's all the Oscars.
We are making recipes inspired by our favorite films.
And now a reboot from Mystic, from Mystic Pizza, the Julia Roberts classic, where a summer working at a pizza joint changes three girls' lives forever.
Of course it does.
And now Jordan has a life-changing healthy twist on pizza that I think will change your life forever.
Yes.
Tell us about it.
Fish the details on this delicious dish.
I'm super excited about this because I actually love it.
I love sweet potatoes and we're going to be making a sweet potato crust today.
Super exciting.
It started in the paleo community.
I mean, I love it.
It's delicious.
Okay, so you're going to start with raw sweet potato.
Don't cook them.
You need them to have a little bit of stick to them.
So you take the raw sweet potatoes, you've got some almond flour.
You just pulverize this in this food process.
Pulverize it in the food processor until it's little and chunky.
And then you have some parmesan.
You're going to add an egg to bind it.
A little salt.
And then you're going to mix that together.
Well, I'm going to mix it together right now.
What I'm doing.
Good.
I can get it.
I do think all these alternative crusts are so exciting.
Cauliflower crust, sweet potato crust, spaghetti squash crust.
I know a lot of people are coming out of that.
So many crusts.
That sounds amazing.
Good pizza.
So I'm really hoping this is good.
I don't want you to rule my favorite food, Jordan.
You don't have to have this.
It's just a new spin, yes.
Okay, so you want to make it into like a little bit of a dough.
It's a single.
Oh, I'm pleased with that.
Okay.
I bet if you wanted to, you could also probably add a little bit of garlic to this too.
Just to make it a little bit different.
It's a little bit powder even now.
Yeah.
Good.
So now what we're going to do, we're going to press this into a 12-inch round.
I like that you could make a little pan pizza and make a square.
Yeah.
Okay, so into the oven.
Into the oven?
Yes, ma'am.
Perfect.
How long does that go for?
Like 20 minutes?
I think about 20 minutes.
Check that out.
15, 20 minutes because everybody's ovens are different.
So just keep an eye on it.
And then what you'll get when it comes out of the oven, it'll look like this.
It'll be much more circular than the one that we just made.
You have this.
It's nice.
It's nice and crunchy.
Nice.
So we're going to do a white pizza because I like it like that.
So we'll do the cheese.
We got some mozzarella and the grilled onions.
And this is chicken sausage.
Yeah, I already showed a pizza.
Yes, it's small.
It's small.
It's so good.
So good.
I'm ready to come sign on the chicken sausage.
Oh, yeah.
So we have this, and then put it back in until the cheese melts.
You got to kind of keep an eye on this.
This one there?
Top it with arugula.
It's a salad and a pizza dung.
Absolutely.
And there you go.
You got a nice little party pizza for your friends.
Thank you.
Oh, Jordan.
Is it good?
Oh, my God.
You love it?
You love it?
You like it?
I love it.
You have convinced me.
I love them.
We just posted this on Instagram.
I saw it recently that you're so inspired in particular, by one movie that I adore that.
I adore that inspired you to cook something.
What is that?
Well, you know, I just love Goodfellas.
I just love it.
It's one of my favorite movies, and it's my dream to cut garlic with a razor blade the way they do paper thin in my dream too, you know, when they said that it melts into the garlic.
So paper thin, it melts right into the oil.
Remember that.
Then he says, don't put too many onions in the sauce, don't?
I love that.
His fingers were manicured.
Yeah, they were in prison.
I love that.
Here we go.
Are your nails manicured there?
They look pretty good.
Wow, they're microphone and they're good jobs.
Listen, I trained to do this my whole life, but you did not train to do something which you're going to try it right now you're.
I heard Birdie told me you were obsessed with the idea of a double pizza slice, the way Tony Monero did in saturday night.
Let me make some movies.
We have made it possible for you to win your dream right now.
Okay, all right, two slices.
That said, they gotta slice, they gotta don't they have to batch like that.
No, actually you kind of want to go technique wise, larger and then a smaller one, and then you do the magical Brooklyn fold.
Oh my goodness.
are you ready i'm ready there we go first time ever on national television the tony monero saturday never double slice brooklyn folding and off they go I'm just gonna go with my wafer thin pizza.
I'll put that on top of there.
Just keep your garlic figured out.
She's stacking the healthy on top like, oh, I got rippled.
Oh, I love it.
You're triple ducks, I got weight.
What do you think?
Is it as good as you want to?
Even better, it's dynamite.
I'm sorry you can keep your sweet potatoes.
We'll be right back with the Red Carpenter Slim Down Secret.
Is it this?
Anyone remember that famous scene from Clueless when Share wanted the house to smell like cookies for her big date?
I don't know about you, but warm cookies make me kind of hungry.
We are back with The dish.
Oscar is special.
Get it, Ozcurn.
And I feel like there are quite a few hungry people hanging out in Hollywood right now.
Everyone is on the diet trying to fit into those tuxedos and the beautiful ball gowns.
So I'm going to put the question to you, Dr. Oz.
Is there any truth?
Can you actually do something to slim down for a big day?
Without question, salt, salt, and carbs, the two big issues.
And you know what to solve?
That's pretty quickly.
But the carbs are an issue for a lot of folks.
And you try to cut them down, you're miserable all the time.
But these low-carb diets, part of the reason they work, part of the reason you guys are all loving them, is they work.
But you end up craving things.
You crave sandwiches.
You crave pizza.
These are crawling at each other because you're not happy in life.
But fear no more, guys.
We have a better option.
There are things you can do to make your carb dreams a reality.
And it's the food find of the day that Daphne's going to tell you about.
I'm really excited about this because I do love my bread.
I do love my carbs.
But you are going to be blown away by this.
This is the cauliflower sandwich thins by Outer Isle Gourmet.
It is an entirely new reality in bread.
Get this.
These sandwich thins have only four simple clean ingredients.
They are 63% fresh cauliflower, fresh cage-free whole eggs, fresh parmesan cheese, and pure nutritional yeast.
That is it.
These four ingredients.
And here's the really cool part.
You know, if you're like me and you kind of, you want to set yourself up for success, you want to keep healthy things on hand, but you also want versatility.
You don't want to get stuck in a rut making the same thing over and over.
We made mini pizzas, we made grilled cheese, we made tacos, and we even made your favorite, Dad, some nice avocado toast.
Isn't that gorgeous?
I do adore this.
I know.
The question is: does it taste enough like real carb, like real bread?
I'm gonna try the pizza to find out about that.
You know, it has a chewiness of bread.
It mimics it nicely.
And they just toasted this one.
Yeah, you throw it in a skillet or you can put it on your griddle if you have that.
But you know what I really like too?
I can imagine with sandwiches also.
Sometimes bread just kind of gets in the way of the flavor.
This adds a lot of substance and a lot of flavor at the same time.
And it's mostly vegetable, which is great.
These sandwich thins are made mostly with cauliflower, so they have very low calories and low carbs.
They're only 50 calories and one net carb per slice.
And then, like we said, they're super versatile.
I've got three little kids at home.
Kids love these too.
You can toast them up, slap some peanut butter on there, a little jelly, and you end up with a gorgeous-looking peanut butter and jelly sandwich just like that.
So a little surprise here.
Our sponsorship partner, Otter Isle Gourmet, is sending everyone in the audience home.
Well, bitch, they're getting one of the y'all get one of these little toasts.
Oh, no, what?
Come on.
Share.
It'll go further.
You got a package of them at least.
Are you kidding me?
They eat all six.
It's all six.
Daphne, what's while they're eating their cauliflower's crisp here?
What's the dish crew?
At only 50 calories, I should be able to eat six of them.
Come on.
You guys, before I dig in, the dish crew is back next Wednesday with recipes inspired by your favorite cocktails.
This is really fun.
We're having Jamica's delicious weeknight mojito shrimp dish and Jordan's Moscato cheesecake.
Don't miss that.
Celebration of life, everybody.
Together, change is happening.
Our journey is just beginning.
