Dr. Oz Podcast - Cardiac Arrest Survival Tips & Dr. Oz Approved Recipes | Dr. Oz | S10 | Ep 139 | Full Episode Aired: 2025-06-02 Duration: 42:35 === Heart Shock Rescue (10:52) === [00:00:00] Today on Oz, think fast. [00:00:02] Someone collapses. [00:00:04] You have seconds to act. [00:00:06] It's cardiac arrest. [00:00:08] I wouldn't have a clue what to do. [00:00:10] What you do next could save a life. [00:00:12] Plus, caught on camera. [00:00:14] Our co-worker is a 24-7 snacker. [00:00:17] We catch viewers' unhealthy habits in the act. [00:00:21] See the plan to break bad eating habits. [00:00:24] Coming up next on Dr. Oz. [00:00:30] I'd like you to meet Karen. [00:00:32] Her 11-year-old daughter, Janet, suffered a cardiac arrest one afternoon in August while at cheerleading practice. [00:00:39] Janet was a typical, seemingly healthy 11-year-old, out for an afternoon of cheerleading practice. [00:00:46] But when Janet went out for a slow jog with the other cheerleaders, she never came back. [00:00:54] Janet collapsed on the field. [00:00:56] With a sudden cardiac arrest. [00:00:58] One of her coaches, a pediatric trauma nurse, immediately began CPR. [00:01:03] But there was no AED. [00:01:06] Even after undergoing 45 minutes of CPR, Janet died at the hospital less than an hour after collapsing. [00:01:16] Janet's survival depended upon a device that you've probably all seen, but very few of you know how to use. [00:01:22] So Karen, if you can, take us back to that afternoon. [00:01:24] What happened? [00:01:25] I had gone to cheerleading practice with my daughter, Janet, and a couple minutes later, two girls who were cheerleaders with her ran up to me and told me that Janet was laying on the field and she wasn't moving. [00:01:40] We had a lot of calls go out to 911. [00:01:43] EMS arrived on the scene about 22 minutes later, and from there we started to transport her to the hospital. [00:01:53] Paramedics met us about 20 minutes after that, and they took over from EMS. [00:02:01] We arrived at the hospital close to 45 minutes. [00:02:04] She had been in cardiac arrest already. [00:02:07] The paramedics were able to revive her at the hospital. [00:02:12] She went into cardiac arrest again, and she couldn't be saved. [00:02:17] I'm so sorry. [00:02:18] I know this is difficult to talk about. [00:02:20] Thank you. [00:02:21] I asked you to go through that story, as painful as it is to retell, because I'm curious what we could have done differently. [00:02:26] Because what happened to your daughter is not uncommon. [00:02:29] Everyone, this is called an AED device. [00:02:31] You've probably seen it. [00:02:32] It's in hallways and public areas all over this country. [00:02:35] It checks the heart's rhythm, and then it can send an electrical shock to restart it. [00:02:40] Did anyone have any idea that this AED device could have helped her? [00:02:45] Did anyone know her heart had stopped beating? [00:02:47] The pediatric trauma nurse knew. [00:02:50] She knew her heart had stopped beating and she had already started CPR. [00:02:55] I myself, when I came upon the scene, it was just, I was horrified. [00:03:00] And I did not know that we needed an AD. [00:03:04] And it wasn't until after everything had happened that My husband and I started researching, like, how could this have ended differently? [00:03:14] And AED is a critical part to the chain of survival when someone is in cardiac arrest. [00:03:21] Do you believe this AED device had been available for you? [00:03:25] Your daughter would be alive now? [00:03:27] My husband and I feel that had we had one, she could very well be here with us today. [00:03:33] Thank you for sharing your story. [00:03:34] Thank you. [00:03:35] So, 70% of Americans feel helpless to act when someone is having a cardiac emergency. [00:03:40] That's two-thirds of us. [00:03:42] That back worries me. [00:03:43] So I conducted a social experiment to find out if the chance to save a life from cardiac arrest comes up. [00:03:49] Will you be prepared? [00:03:50] Good card. [00:03:51] I wouldn't have a clue what to do with the AED. [00:03:54] I'm not even sure what AED stands for. [00:03:59] We wanted to try our experiment on the Dr. Oz audience because no one is better informed about health. [00:04:05] But could they pass this life and death test? [00:04:11] What our audience doesn't know, earlier that day, we installed an AED on a fake wall in our audience holding area. [00:04:18] Then we rigged hidden cameras. [00:04:21] To make this as real as possible, we hired an experienced actor to reenact sudden cardiac arrest. [00:04:29] Then we brought in an expert from the American Red Cross, Lepika Shaw, to play the role of a helpful bystander. [00:04:36] Our audience has no idea what's about to happen. [00:04:43] Oh my God! [00:04:45] Are you Andrew? [00:04:47] Hello? [00:04:49] I don't think he's breathing. [00:04:51] Those people were terrified and sat motionless. [00:04:55] Can you get me an AED, please? [00:04:57] Just get me an AED. [00:04:58] An AED, get me an AED. [00:05:00] Hello? [00:05:00] What's an AED? [00:05:01] What is AED? [00:05:02] A double aid. [00:05:03] A double aid simulator. [00:05:04] Um, I took a class once. [00:05:07] Are you Shannon's a nurse. [00:05:10] But fortunately, Shannon knew what to do. [00:05:15] As it turns out, Shannon was trained to work in AED for her job. [00:05:22] I'm a nurse anesthetist in Baltimore, so I'm very familiar with AEDs. [00:05:26] Shannon knew what to do, but 99% of the audience didn't. [00:05:31] This is actually okay. [00:05:32] This is an actor. [00:05:33] This is someone from the American Red Cross. [00:05:35] And you did a great job! [00:05:39] I was just like, what am I supposed to do? [00:05:43] I panicked. [00:05:44] I didn't know what to do. [00:05:45] She kept asking for an AED. [00:05:46] I had no idea what it was. [00:05:48] Never heard of it. [00:05:50] Then we ran the experiment again with a new audience. [00:05:53] Oh my god. [00:05:55] Oh my god. [00:05:56] Someone get an AED, please. [00:05:58] Please. [00:05:58] Why not? [00:05:59] Again, most were frozen in their tracks. [00:06:02] But not this woman. [00:06:04] Turns out she's a nurse and even trains people on CPR and AEDs. [00:06:12] In our next run-through, Camille didn't know how to work an AED. [00:06:17] But that didn't stop her. [00:06:19] She still helped by fetching the defibrillator and bravely assisting. [00:06:23] I didn't know what to do, so I just grabbed it and listened to what she was saying. [00:06:28] Camille told us her heart was pounding, but you'd never know it. [00:06:31] She remained calm throughout. [00:06:33] Oh, definitely going to look into how to use an AED now after this, definitely. [00:06:41] Well, we say I have the smartest audience in television. [00:06:43] Camille is joining us. [00:06:45] It's when the actor fell on the floor and you thought he was dying from a heart problem. [00:06:48] What was your first reaction? [00:06:50] Oh, my gosh. [00:06:51] I was so scared and so nervous. [00:06:53] I didn't know what to do. [00:06:54] But I heard someone yell, get an AED. [00:06:58] I just turned around, saw one on the wall, grabbed it, and went over there. [00:07:01] I didn't even think. [00:07:03] Do you have any idea what this device does? [00:07:05] No, I know it's good. [00:07:07] You need to have and know what to do with it. [00:07:10] You heard Karen's story about losing her daughter. [00:07:13] Yes. [00:07:14] 80%, more than 80%, frankly, of the time. [00:07:17] We drop dead in front of the people who love us the most. [00:07:20] Right. [00:07:20] We die at home, folks. [00:07:21] We die with our friends in the cars. [00:07:23] So we can save each other's lives. [00:07:25] 5% of the time, we actually do save their life. [00:07:28] There are hundreds of thousands of lives we can save this year if we pay attention just for the next few minutes. [00:07:34] Yes. [00:07:34] Can we all do that together? [00:07:35] Yes. [00:07:35] All right. [00:07:36] Lipika Shah is joining us for the American Red Cross. [00:07:39] So, Lipika, what is it? [00:07:41] That is hurting us. [00:07:42] Why isn't America responding when we see folks dropping down, even loved ones? [00:07:45] Clearly, they haven't taken my class. [00:07:47] No, they haven't. [00:07:48] I think that AEDs are a medical device. [00:07:51] It's got this big old lightning bolt symbol on it. [00:07:52] Maybe it's a little intimidating. [00:07:54] It may be a little scary if you've never taken a class. [00:07:56] You don't really know what to do beyond what you've seen on TV. [00:07:58] Let's demystify it. [00:07:59] What do these devices do? [00:08:01] The purpose of an AED is to analyze a victim's heart rhythm, and if it finds something wrong with it, it prompts you to deliver an electrical shock. [00:08:08] To the heart. [00:08:09] That shock interrupts the heart rhythm and allows it to reset itself back to normal, which is a pretty great thing if someone's in cardiac arrest. [00:08:16] Remember, minutes are critically important here. [00:08:18] You dramatically change the outcome just by acting a minute or two earlier. [00:08:21] So there are three things you got to do right when you see someone go down. [00:08:24] Right away. [00:08:25] First and foremost, call 911. [00:08:27] If you can have somebody else do it, even better. [00:08:29] Second, if your victim's unconscious and not breathing... [00:08:33] It's the best thing that we can do. [00:08:34] You can take a class to learn how to do it. [00:08:36] And third, as soon as it becomes available to you, you use that AED. [00:08:40] Because when in combination with CPR, it does so much to help victims in cardiac arrest. [00:08:44] Camille, you want to learn how to use an AED? [00:08:46] Yes, I do. [00:08:47] Let me take it away. [00:08:48] Come on over. [00:08:49] I've got a little friend down here. [00:08:51] You're going to sit right over there, and I'll sit down right next to you. [00:08:54] Okay, the brilliant thing about AEDs is they're super easy to use because once you turn it on, it tells you what to do. [00:09:00] So why don't we turn on this AED here. [00:09:02] Go ahead and hit that on button. [00:09:04] And let's see what it tells us. [00:09:07] Apply pads to patient's bare chest. [00:09:10] Okay. [00:09:11] Plug in pads connector next to flashing light. [00:09:15] Beautiful. [00:09:15] So we have two steps. [00:09:16] You're going to bare the chest. [00:09:17] Beautiful. [00:09:18] And then wipe it down. [00:09:19] We want to make sure it's dry. [00:09:21] It'll keep repeating itself until we do something. [00:09:24] So we're going to apply these pads. [00:09:26] They've got pictures. [00:09:27] So one pad goes up here, upper right side of the chest. [00:09:30] Beautiful. [00:09:31] Yeah, and that one goes down there. [00:09:32] Exactly. [00:09:33] Beautiful. [00:09:35] If it's a child or an infant that we're helping, you can actually still use the pads. [00:09:39] They might touch, though. [00:09:40] So one goes in the front and the other goes in the back between the shoulder blades. [00:09:43] Super easy. [00:09:44] Great. [00:09:44] So pads are on. [00:09:45] Now we're going to plug in this connector. [00:09:47] Love it. [00:09:49] Isn't that unbelievable, how straightforward that is? [00:09:51] Analyzing heart rhythm. [00:09:52] Remember, it won't shock. [00:09:54] Do not touch the patient. [00:09:55] Unless there's a problem. [00:09:56] Right, so it's going to figure it out. [00:09:58] If it's a problem, it wants you off, and it's going to shock the heart back in. [00:10:01] Shock advised. [00:10:01] Okay. [00:10:02] Charging. [00:10:04] Stay clear of patient. [00:10:06] Okay, so we're going to stay clear. [00:10:07] Everybody else is, too. [00:10:08] Deliver shock now. [00:10:10] Press the orange button now. [00:10:12] Shock delivered. [00:10:13] And that's it. [00:10:14] Wow. [00:10:15] That's how you save lives. [00:10:19] So, Lepika, where can folks get trained to do this other than watching the show? [00:10:24] I think that it's super important to take a class. [00:10:26] We offer classes all over the country through the Red Cross. [00:10:28] Visit our website, redcross.org. [00:10:30] Type in your zip code. [00:10:31] Find a class near you. [00:10:32] The more training you have, the more confidence you have. [00:10:34] You build that muscle memory. [00:11:34] Today, I've got some of the best new anti-aging products, and I've asked you, the Dr. Oz Show audience, led by Tanisha Thomas from TV's Bad Girls Club, to test them out. [00:11:45] So what do you look for when you're trying to find the best anti-aging parts? [00:11:48] Well, I know that SPF is important and also price because, honey, I'm not trying to break the piggy bank. [00:11:53] So there's so many to choose from. [00:11:54] So definitely SPF and hydration. [00:11:58] And I've got to ask, because I know you do some crazy things out there. [00:12:01] What's the weirdest thing you've done to get beautiful, to look a little younger? [00:12:05] Oh, my gosh. [00:12:06] Well, definitely cross state lines for a weave, honey. [00:12:08] Yes. [00:12:09] It's worth it? [00:12:10] Oh, it's definitely worth it. [00:12:11] That's right. [00:12:11] Hello, hair popping. [00:12:12] Hey. [00:12:14] It is popping. [00:12:15] Thank you. [00:12:16] My team and I have been searching for the best anti-aging products, and we saw these. [00:12:22] They are popping up everywhere. [00:12:24] Actress Mindy Kaling and supermodel Heidi Klum have recently posted these pictures on Instagram. [00:12:29] I actually tried it this morning myself. [00:12:32] You'll notice me there, getting my psyched up look. [00:12:35] There I am. [00:12:36] See how comfortable I look? [00:12:37] I look like Jason. [00:12:39] Maybe Hannibal Lecter. [00:12:42] But you guys are doing it yourselves. [00:12:43] I gotta ask, do you feel a little ridiculous doing this? [00:12:47] A little bit, but it feels really nice. [00:12:49] Describe it. [00:12:50] It feels really cold and wet, but really smooth. [00:12:54] Cold in a good way? [00:12:54] Yes. [00:12:55] What do you think? [00:12:56] It feels soothing. [00:12:57] Is it worth it? [00:12:58] Yes. [00:12:59] Not sure yet, though, are you? [00:13:00] Well, hopefully it'll be more worth it. [00:13:03] Very soothing. [00:13:05] Is soothing the best word that describes this, everybody? [00:13:08] Soothing? [00:13:09] Who doesn't like it? [00:13:11] Oh, maybe one person. [00:13:14] I think it's a little too close to my eyes. [00:13:16] Then move it up. [00:13:18] It's on your eyes. [00:13:20] It's not too close to your eyes. [00:13:21] It's on your eyes. [00:13:22] There. [00:13:23] Now, how's it now? [00:13:25] Gosh. [00:13:27] Think about it. [00:13:28] You're supposed to be able to see through it. [00:13:30] All right. [00:13:30] Can you say, have you tried this as well? [00:13:32] I have. [00:13:32] I have tried it, yes. [00:13:34] And I love it. [00:13:35] You do? [00:13:36] You know, despite the fact that I look like a Michael Myers, I mean, honey, my face felt just soft, hydrated. [00:13:42] It was just, it was amazing. [00:13:43] I could instantly feel a difference. [00:13:45] All right. [00:13:45] So explain why these sheet masks are one of the best anti-aging products of the year. [00:13:49] Here's dermatologist Dr. Doris Day. [00:13:52] Sheet masks. [00:13:53] These are one-time use and mask-free, and they come with different ingredients based on your particular skin complaint. [00:14:00] But the key point is that they're made of biocellulose material that recreates the natural skin barrier and helps hydrate the skin and lock in that moisture. [00:14:10] You can do it at home two to three times a week or anytime you need a healthy glow. [00:14:15] So can you see through it now? [00:14:17] Yes. [00:14:18] Better? [00:14:18] Much better. [00:14:19] How about you? [00:14:19] With the glasses on, it's also okay? [00:14:21] It's soothing. [00:14:22] That's a word. [00:14:22] How can you get yours on with the glasses and your friend back there couldn't do it? [00:14:26] I do everything with my glasses. [00:14:28] I've been wearing them since first grade. [00:14:30] Well, you look wonderful. [00:14:30] It's a great new look. [00:14:32] All right. [00:14:32] The mask is supposed to stay on 15 to 20 minutes. [00:14:35] We're going to have everyone take them off at the end of the segment for a full, honest reaction. [00:14:39] And hopefully you can all see yourselves then at that point. [00:14:41] All right. [00:14:41] The next new anti-aging product comes from my beauty director at the Good Life magazine. [00:14:45] Newest issue has this. [00:14:46] Micellar water. [00:14:47] This is a European trend. [00:14:49] Very popular. [00:14:49] It's just come to America. [00:14:50] It's basically makeup remover, but it's soap-free, alcohol-free, and it's a cleanser. [00:14:55] So you don't have to scrub or rinse, and it's meant to leave the skin very soft and nourished and hydrated. [00:14:59] You know, I check all these things out myself. [00:15:00] I'm the beauty tester. [00:15:02] And I like the way it feels on my skin. [00:15:03] But I actually wanted to hear about your experience, because you sent us a little footage using myceler water. [00:15:08] I did. [00:15:08] So walk us through this. [00:15:09] Well, you know, I wear a ton of makeup for, you know, for television, and it was really, really great, because I love the fact that I didn't have to wash it off, and as you see, I really enjoyed myself there. [00:15:20] I mean, you know, the fact that just with one swipe, it was so gentle on the skin. [00:15:24] And I like the fact you don't have to take it off at the end of the day, which is a huge advantage. [00:15:28] Okay, we've got Lauren, Renee, and Mandy here from the audience. [00:15:30] They are bravely removing their makeup with micellar water. [00:15:35] So ladies, what do you think? [00:15:36] I think that it has a good feel to it. [00:15:39] It allows you the opportunity to take all of it off, and look how much it took off in just a little bit. [00:15:43] I didn't have to use a lot of product at all. [00:15:45] Show that to camera. [00:15:45] That is a lot. [00:15:46] That's a lot. [00:15:47] Yes, and it was a clean feeling. [00:15:49] My face feels refreshed and I feel like I'm glowing. [00:15:52] It's nice and smooth. [00:15:53] And it feels like it's like this nice water feel. [00:15:57] It's not a heavy, chemical, thick, goopy stuff. [00:16:01] And it does work. [00:16:02] I sense that too. [00:16:03] My face usually feels a little slippery afterwards. [00:16:05] Like I have to wash it again after I've taken off stuff. [00:16:07] But this doesn't have that feeling. [00:16:09] I like that it's not greasy and it's very light. [00:16:12] We have happy customers, I think. [00:16:14] I want to thank the beauty editors of The Good Life for that tip. [00:16:21] All right, the final anti-aging product comes from my daughter, Daphne. [00:16:24] She just tweeted this. [00:16:25] She said, new skin saver find for you. [00:16:29] Anything with amela in it. [00:16:30] It's loaded with vitamin C, amazingly gentle, and exfoliation that gets her the daily glow that she wants. [00:16:36] Let me explain what Amla is. [00:16:37] You all know what this is. [00:16:38] It comes from Indian gooseberry. [00:16:39] It does have a lot of vitamin C. And that content helps form collagen, which is good for the skin. [00:16:44] It helps smooth out the fine wrinkles and the lines. [00:16:46] Daphne actually bought a product from a store. [00:16:49] It's a cleanser. [00:16:50] It had Amla. [00:16:51] But you don't have to get that. [00:16:52] You can actually just buy the juice itself in a pure form. [00:16:55] And you just apply it with a cotton pad like this after cleansing. [00:16:58] Or you can get amla oil. [00:17:00] And this is actually frequently used Indian secret for thick, soft, healthy hair. [00:17:05] So Daphne tried the amla oil on her face. [00:17:08] Why don't you walk us through it? [00:17:09] Because we actually had an experiment done on Tanisha's hair. [00:17:15] I actually used it before washing, and then after washing, I loved it so much. [00:17:21] I used it as a treatment because I have very dry scalp. [00:17:24] You know, this weather has not been kind, honey. [00:17:26] It looks good. [00:17:27] Yes, looks good, right? [00:17:28] Soft and just... [00:17:31] I'm in love with this. [00:17:31] Would you cross date lines for that? [00:17:33] I would cross a country for that. [00:17:35] The definitive endorsement. [00:17:36] I will cross a country for that one. [00:17:38] Let's go back over here. [00:17:41] We've got our mask audience here. [00:17:43] What do you guys think so far? [00:17:44] You want to take it off? [00:17:46] Disrobe. [00:17:46] Take them all off. [00:17:48] Again, I want an honest opinion here. === Anti-Aging Tip: Olive Oil Dabbing (15:21) === [00:17:50] What do you think? [00:17:51] It's very refreshing. [00:17:52] I feel very clean. [00:17:54] Generally, thumbs it up. [00:17:57] Everyone happy? [00:17:58] Everyone can see? [00:17:59] Can you see now? [00:18:00] Yes. [00:18:01] Happy customers. [00:18:02] Thank you very much. [00:18:04] All right, thank all the guests and all the experts. [00:18:06] Today, we'll be right back. [00:18:14] What's your favorite at-home anti-aging tip? [00:18:16] I dab a little bit of olive oil on the sides of my eyes and my forehead before bed each night. [00:18:20] It's completely natural and is a fantastic way to moisturize. [00:18:23] Plus, it smells great. [00:18:24] Share yours on Facebook.com slash Dr. Oz. [00:18:28] Next, are you a snack food junkie? [00:18:31] Vending machines by day? [00:18:33] Refrigerator raids by night? [00:18:34] We're setting up a health stick to catch unsuspecting snackers on tape and bust them on our show. [00:18:39] The plan for anyone who has trouble snacking, coming up next. [00:18:47] You're about to meet. [00:18:49] Loves to snap. [00:18:50] And her co-workers say she can't stay away from the office vending machine. [00:18:54] So we set up a sting to see if we could catch her on camera. [00:18:59] You want to see what happened? [00:19:00] Yes! [00:19:01] Let's look. [00:19:02] Our co-worker Nicole is a 24-7 snacker. [00:19:06] If it's not to the vending machine to get a bag of chips or a soda, she's snacking in someone's office. [00:19:12] We're going to try to get some shot of her going to the vending machine. [00:19:19] We know she wants to get healthy. [00:19:21] That's why we're going undercover so you can see what we've been talking about. [00:19:25] Time for a health sting! [00:19:27] Mission day one, baby! [00:19:28] Let's go! [00:19:29] Oh my god! [00:19:32] Oh god. [00:19:35] I heard she's coming upstairs. [00:19:37] I'm gonna go put a camera in the kitchen. [00:19:39] Day 2! [00:19:59] Oh god. [00:20:06] I need a piece of candy. [00:20:16] But I don't... [00:20:18] Oh my god. [00:20:21] Oh my god. [00:20:22] Okay. [00:20:23] Selfie time. [00:20:26] Really? [00:20:27] Wait, one second. [00:20:33] We're about to go with Buster. [00:20:35] She has no idea what she's in for. [00:20:37] Busted! [00:20:40] Yeah! [00:20:41] We got you good! [00:20:43] Woo! [00:20:43] We've been taking you all week to show up until the evening. [00:20:47] Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. [00:20:50] Hi, Nicole. [00:20:51] If you're listening to this, you've been a victim of my health sting. [00:20:54] I love these. [00:20:54] Your friends told me that you can't help but snack on the temperate foods around the office. [00:20:58] So I'd love to invite you to my studio to talk about the sting. [00:21:01] I'll see you here. [00:21:03] What? [00:21:05] Busted! [00:21:08] Nicole is here. [00:21:09] Hello with our co-workers Janice, Andrade, and Kenya. [00:21:13] Oh, Nicole. [00:21:14] Poor Nicole. [00:21:14] I know. [00:21:15] Can we switch things? [00:21:16] No. [00:21:16] You want a second? [00:21:18] So were you surprised your friends turned their cell phones on you? [00:21:20] Very, very surprised. [00:21:23] Yeah, I'm plotting revenge right now. [00:21:25] You are? [00:21:26] Yes, I am. [00:21:27] How hard was it to set up this thing? [00:21:29] It was actually pretty easy, because she wears a lot of bracelets, so when she's walking down the hall, we can hear them. [00:21:34] So we were like, go get the camera! [00:21:36] She's going! [00:21:37] She's going! [00:21:39] And now this Kenya was behind the cameras, helping plot out this whole thing. [00:21:43] And I heard Nicole got a little revenge on you. [00:21:45] What did she do? [00:21:46] Yeah, we stepped out the office for a second. [00:21:48] We returned. [00:21:50] Janice had to search for her chair. [00:21:53] Once she found it, I got to my office, and Candy was all over my desk. [00:21:58] I can't believe she would do that. [00:21:59] And then Janice tried to call me, so I go to reach for the phone, and I'm like, where's my receiver? [00:22:04] Don't have a receiver. [00:22:05] Couldn't put it on speaker. [00:22:06] Yeah, where was the video camera now? [00:22:08] I don't know. [00:22:10] What a good sport you are. [00:22:11] What gives you the urge to go off and snack like you do? [00:22:14] Well, you know, in the afternoon, I just need a little pick-me-up to get me through the rest of the day. [00:22:19] So, a little Jolly Rancho, a little Pepsi, and I'm good. [00:22:24] You're good. [00:22:24] Yeah. [00:22:25] But does it last you through the rest of the afternoon? [00:22:27] Yep. [00:22:27] It's just the perfect touch. [00:22:28] Just the perfect touch. [00:22:29] We're going to see what we can do about that. [00:22:31] Before that, Nicole, you weren't the only one to get set up with a health sting today. [00:22:35] There's someone else who has no idea. [00:22:37] There's a man in this audience, a man who set up a sting. [00:22:41] On his wife. [00:22:42] Now, how dangerous is that? [00:22:44] She's here and she has no idea until right now. [00:22:49] Take a look. [00:22:50] Dr. Oz, I need your help. [00:22:52] My wife is snacking constantly. [00:22:54] She wakes up in the middle of the night almost every night, comes down and raves the pantry. [00:22:58] She eats the kids' snacks for school. [00:23:00] The next morning I wake up, it's like a small crime scene around here. [00:23:04] I'm going to set a video up. [00:23:05] I'm going to send it to you. [00:23:07] I need you, Dr. Oz. [00:23:09] I think it's time for a house thing. [00:23:13] I woke up before her and she's still sleeping. [00:23:16] And this is what she had last night. [00:23:20] Her cookies. [00:23:22] And chocolates. [00:23:24] And there she is sleeping. [00:23:29] She's in the bathroom. [00:23:31] She doesn't know I'm here. [00:23:33] This is everything she's been eating. [00:23:39] That's a big pile of candy wrappers. [00:23:45] Erin just made popcorn and sat down on the couch downstairs. [00:23:52] That's Erin. [00:23:54] There's Erin at 3:30 in the morning eating popcorn and chocolates and watching TV by herself. [00:24:03] We caught her red-handed. [00:24:07] Very, very clever. [00:24:08] Erin! [00:24:10] Hi. [00:24:11] Are those tears of joy? [00:24:14] I'm so shocked. [00:24:15] Any idea he could set this up at all? [00:24:18] No, I had no idea. [00:24:20] We've been together forever, so I had no idea he could set this up. [00:24:24] I thought this was my idea because I wanted to meet you. [00:24:27] It was an energetic couple, so I was like, woo, yay! [00:24:31] We got to meet now. [00:24:32] It's nice to meet you. [00:24:33] Oh, nice to meet you. [00:24:34] Thank you. [00:24:35] You think you can throw him in the doghouse now, Erin? [00:24:36] No, no. [00:24:38] I actually watch your show, and I want to be healthy. [00:24:42] Brothers get married in October, and I've been trying to do everything, but at night, I have no willpower. [00:24:49] I sleep eat. [00:24:50] Sleep eat? [00:24:51] Sleep eat. [00:24:52] So what goes down? [00:24:52] I love the shot, looking over the banister at 3 in the morning at the TV set. [00:24:58] And what is going on when you start to get those urges? [00:25:01] Oh, I'm sorry. [00:25:02] I do great all day and eat healthy, try to do the diet I'm supposed to do, but then I get the, Right now it's Easter, so there's this peanut butter. [00:25:16] Oh, so good. [00:25:18] And then my willpower just leaves. [00:25:21] So if you can help me with that, that would be great. [00:25:23] I'm going to help you. [00:25:24] That's what today's about. [00:25:25] But I've got to go to Joe. [00:25:26] Joe, go with the mic if you don't. [00:25:28] Why would you do this to the wife? [00:25:30] And we love you so much. [00:25:31] And what makes you brave enough to risk everything? [00:25:34] Well, it's a funny thing, Doc. [00:25:36] You know, we've been together 19 years and married for 16. And she's always been the midnight pantry bandit. [00:25:43] And, you know, the kids are getting a little older now. [00:25:47] Erin likes to not take the blame for some of the stuff missing. [00:25:50] So there's been a little bit of chaos in the house with me and the kids over snacks in the morning missing. [00:25:56] And finally, you know, I woke up a couple times and caught her, but she denies it. [00:26:02] You know, she gets away with it with her little smile, and I buy it, but this has been a long time coming. [00:26:07] Well, you have a beautiful smile. [00:26:08] Oh, thank you. [00:26:09] You have very good taste in women and wonderful camera work. [00:26:11] All right, when we come back, how to break the habit for anyone who has trouble with stacking like Erin here at any time of day. [00:26:18] Stay here. [00:26:18] Thank you. [00:26:23] Coming up next, do you eat when you're bored, sad, stressed, or anxious? [00:26:28] Want to get healthy but can't stop the snacking? [00:26:30] Help is on the way with healthy swaps for all your favorite snacks. [00:26:34] The plan to get you past mindless and emotional eating. [00:26:37] Coming up. [00:26:38] Real housewife Claudia Jordan gets real. [00:26:41] The embarrassing condition she's lived with for years. [00:26:44] Celebrity toes out of Jack Doug. [00:26:46] You've become the corn queen. [00:26:47] I've got a little home remedy for you that could help you out. [00:26:49] All new odds. [00:26:51] That's coming up on Monday. [00:26:53] Busted! [00:26:57] Yeah! [00:26:57] What? [00:26:58] There's Erin at 3.30 in the morning. [00:27:01] Popcorn and chocolates. [00:27:03] Watching TV by herself. [00:27:07] We caught her red-handed. [00:27:11] So I'm here with Nicole and Erin and their friends and family members who actually helped me catch them in a Dr. Oz health sting. [00:27:17] I love doing these. [00:27:18] So, questions of the entire group. [00:27:19] How many of you only snack because you're hungry? [00:27:23] When you're hungry. [00:27:23] Hands up. [00:27:25] Oh, please, Erin, come on. [00:27:27] Three in the morning, no one's hungry. [00:27:29] Nicole, you think you're only doing it when you're hungry? [00:27:31] Yeah. [00:27:32] Yeah, maybe. [00:27:33] Maybe. [00:27:34] We'll think about it. [00:27:34] I love you. [00:27:35] All right. [00:27:36] Bigger question. [00:27:37] How many of you snack because you're bored or anxious, stressed? [00:27:40] Oh. [00:27:41] I put my hands up, too, right? [00:27:42] That's a big deal for all of us. [00:27:43] Okay, so the question is, how do we help you get past this mindless and emotional eating? [00:27:47] And I've enlisted psychologist Dr. Romani Durasala. [00:27:52] Here are some tips to help you avoid mindless eating. [00:27:57] First, instead of reaching for a snack, try reaching for a warm drink like warm tea or warm water. [00:28:04] That's because warm liquids soothe us and we often snack to soothe. [00:28:09] Second, replace the snacking with other activities that you enjoy. [00:28:14] Things like reading, watching TV, or talking on the phone with a friend. [00:28:18] And finally, remember the word Halt. [00:28:22] Stop and think whether you're snacking because you're actually hungry or if you're angry, lonely, or tired. [00:28:29] Only snack if you're hungry. [00:28:31] Don't snack to manage these other emotions. [00:28:34] It's better to work on other skills and other ways of coping with difficult emotions. [00:28:41] Great advice. [00:28:42] And the call was stung by her co-workers for being unable to avoid the office vending machine and that candy bowl. [00:28:48] They tried the candy bowl. [00:28:49] But sometimes it's not just mindless eating. [00:28:51] Sometimes you just want a snack. [00:28:53] And actually, you were pretty honest about this. [00:28:55] Sometimes you just want that little pick-me-up. [00:28:56] So here's the deal. [00:28:57] If your co-workers have tricked you, they actually want you to control your snack in a little bit. [00:29:01] So we have a plan for you. [00:29:03] Is that true? [00:29:03] Ken, you want to take it away? [00:29:04] We want you to embrace the snack-size baggie. [00:29:09] Why is that, Kenya? [00:29:10] Because it's portion control. [00:29:11] Just enough to get you through your little break. [00:29:15] Doesn't it sound like a big deal? [00:29:16] This is actually my bag. [00:29:17] Perfect. [00:29:18] I fill this up in the morning. [00:29:19] I happen to like cashews. [00:29:20] They're just what I need when I need that afternoon pick-me-up, which is what I do. [00:29:23] I have this little bag. [00:29:24] I can't put too much in here. [00:29:26] I pretty much fill it as much as I can, and then in the afternoon I take it. [00:29:28] Now, I put a bunch of things up there. [00:29:30] You could have carrots and celery and popcorn and nuts and other kinds of nuts, frankly. [00:29:33] Even chips, maybe. [00:29:35] Things that aren't ideal. [00:29:36] Veggie chips, of course. [00:29:37] Which of those would you pick to put in your half-size baggie, if you had the choice? [00:29:43] Hmm. [00:29:43] Not too excited, I can tell. [00:29:46] Don't hold back now. [00:29:47] I want to see the enthusiasm dripping from your pores. [00:29:50] Is that popcorn? [00:29:51] Is that popcorn? [00:29:52] Yes. [00:29:53] Okay, popcorn. [00:29:54] Popcorn's the best we can do, huh? [00:29:56] You don't seem too excited about this tip, although, Ken, you worked on it all week. [00:29:59] I try. [00:30:00] I have a health corner. [00:30:01] You know what? [00:30:02] I get it. [00:30:02] You want a decadent snack, don't you? [00:30:04] Yeah. [00:30:05] You want something real. [00:30:05] Yes. [00:30:06] Forget this idea. [00:30:08] It's a bad idea. [00:30:09] I like it, but some of you may go with it. [00:30:11] Joel, you like my idea? [00:30:12] I absolutely like your idea. [00:30:13] Joel, you have poor judgment. [00:30:13] Look what you did to Aaron. [00:30:15] So here's the chef and self-proclaimed snacker Candice Gamay is joining us with healthy swaps for all of your favorite snacks. [00:30:21] These things will taste good. [00:30:22] You will like them. [00:30:22] Okay. [00:30:23] What are your favorite things to snack on before we talk about the healthy stuff? [00:30:27] Right. [00:30:27] Believe it or not, I am a total snacker. [00:30:30] I loved eating pita chips and bagel chips, and then I found out I may as well be eating potato chips at the same time. [00:30:35] So now I snack on things like avocados, raw nuts, popcorn, and I absolutely love kind of changing it up to make things more enticing at home, and that's kind of where the chef role comes into play. [00:30:45] But I know that you guys want something a bit tastier, so Canvas has created swaps of the most common unhealthy snacks. [00:30:51] So what are they? [00:30:52] I'll put them in a list for you. [00:30:53] They're the candies, the chips, the cookies, the sodas, the ice creams, all those bad things that I know you all want. [00:30:57] I see you nodding your heads up and down. [00:30:59] We have options for you. [00:31:00] Take it away. [00:31:01] All right, the entire audience Take it away. [00:31:11] Right, so cookies. [00:31:12] We all know we like sweets and candy, so I created a cinnamon coconut popcorn for you. [00:31:16] These are ingredients you already have at home. [00:31:18] It's simple to make, and cinnamon actually just a little sprinkle on top. [00:31:22] You can actually use some coconut oil spray. [00:31:24] It's really simple, light, and filling. [00:31:27] And? [00:31:27] You keep going. [00:31:28] But what does that replace? [00:31:29] That's for the chips? [00:31:30] This replaces the candy and the cookies, yes. [00:31:33] Because we all know we love sweets and we want something to crave, you know, with our sweet tooth. [00:31:37] So these are rosemary garlic almonds. [00:31:39] So if you love chips and you like salt, because a lot of us do, these are actually a great alternative. [00:31:45] You can roast them at home in your oven. [00:31:47] You're going to get nutrients and you're going to really feel good about what you're snacking on. [00:31:50] Then we have frozen berries and grapes. [00:31:53] Okay, so a lot of us like to get, you know, frozen yogurt, dessert, and ice cream at night, so I'm also to blame on this. [00:32:00] Go to the freezer, you reach in there, and you just get the half pint. [00:32:04] Instead, put all of these frozen berries and grapes into a bag, and then you can reach in and grab a handful at night, and they're so cold and delicious, and they kind of melt in your mouth. [00:32:13] It feels like you're eating ice cream, but you're actually getting something that's good for you. [00:32:18] Water, which I think is an option, but people find it very bland. [00:32:22] Instead of soda pop, what do you offer? [00:32:23] Absolutely. [00:32:24] Infused waters are kind of all over the place right now. [00:32:26] They're very trendy, and I'm sure you've seen mason jars all over the place. [00:32:29] So you just add your favorites like mint and cucumbers here. [00:32:32] You can add some honeydew melon as well. [00:32:34] Or in this case, we have rosemary infused with some berries. [00:32:37] So you're going to get a rosemary berry feel. [00:32:40] These are really great with coconut, pineapple, whatever you like. [00:32:43] Infused, take it to work, and you can really hydrate and stay full at work too. [00:32:47] So we're going to take this. [00:32:48] We're going to learn from it now. [00:32:49] I want you to take these ideas. [00:32:50] They're for them. [00:32:51] They're laid in front of you. [00:32:52] They're savory, wonderful, sometimes sweet treats. [00:32:55] Audience, you all have them in front of you. === Simple Cooking Solutions (09:30) === [00:32:56] You have those little voting devices. [00:32:57] You go ahead and vote. [00:32:59] In the meantime, I'm going to ask Erin, which of these do you think you might like? [00:33:02] I like them all. [00:33:03] You like them all? [00:33:04] Yeah. [00:33:05] Especially in the middle of the night. [00:33:07] Right. [00:33:07] But I really like the frozen fruit. [00:33:10] The frozen fruit. [00:33:12] It almost replaces the ice cream, the coldness I like. [00:33:14] So I like the fruit. [00:33:16] And Nicole, how about you? [00:33:18] I like the popcorn. [00:33:20] Great. [00:33:21] I like the nuts. [00:33:23] And the frozen fruit. [00:33:26] Now I see a smile on your face. [00:33:29] There's a smile over there. [00:33:30] That's amazing. [00:33:32] Unlike what happened earlier when you couldn't pick the celery or the carrots, which is your favorite. [00:33:36] Okay, here's the deal. [00:33:37] You're going to vote. [00:33:37] A is cinnamon, coconut, popcorn. [00:33:39] B is garlic, rosemary, almonds. [00:33:42] C is frozen grapes and berries. [00:33:44] D is infused water. [00:33:46] Log them in there, guys. [00:33:47] Vote which one you want. [00:33:48] Again, these things are fantastic tasting for you. [00:33:50] And the winner is... [00:33:53] Frozen grapes and berries won by a large margin. [00:33:57] I would have gone with the rosemary nuts. [00:33:59] I thought so, too, actually. [00:34:01] You guys could probably enjoy all of them, couldn't you? [00:34:56] I mean, after all, I named a magazine for that reason, The Good Life. [00:34:59] But let's face it. [00:35:00] A good life is filled with good, healthy food. [00:35:02] And a lot of you say cooking has become more of a chore than a joy. [00:35:06] Sorry he's in that group. [00:35:07] Why is it you dread dinner time? [00:35:08] I get so overwhelmed by the cooking experience in general. [00:35:12] Just making sure I have the right ingredients, the right utensils, measuring out. [00:35:17] All the spices and getting the flavor right. [00:35:19] And then after work, coming home and cooking and then cleaning after that, it's just, I get anxiety just from the thought of cooking alone. [00:35:27] It's just another, it feels like a chore. [00:35:29] Like a chore, like homework. [00:35:30] Yes. [00:35:30] What's your lucky day? [00:35:31] Because I invited someone to join us. [00:35:32] He's brought some simple ways to get the joy back in your cooking. [00:35:36] He's the author of Good Food, Good Life, celebrity chef Curtis Stone. [00:35:39] All right. [00:35:48] Thank you. [00:35:50] Curtis, welcome. [00:35:51] Curtis, this show segment is all yours. [00:35:53] Take it away. [00:35:54] I want you to go, but we're done. [00:35:55] I want you to help us all appreciate how we make it a joy, not a chore, to make our meals. [00:36:00] Now, Sari, I think good food and good life are so interconnected, and I'm going to give you a few little tips that make it super easy. [00:36:06] Okay. [00:36:07] The first one, I'm going to show you how to do a Baja chicken salad. [00:36:10] Right? [00:36:16] So that's the first secret. [00:36:17] Just get a little bit organized. [00:36:19] Okay. [00:36:19] So, Doc, if you don't mind having a quick look in the fridge, I've got some carrots and some radishes and some cabbage that I've already sliced up. [00:36:26] So all of that stuff comes together to quickly... [00:36:30] Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. [00:36:32] And we just toss that straight on in here. [00:36:34] Sorry, open that up, you don't mind. [00:36:35] I've made a quick dressing, which is really simple. [00:36:38] It's made from cilantro, a little bit of oil, a little bit of vinegar. [00:36:40] Toss it in. [00:36:41] So, you know, I cut some of this stuff on a Japanese mandolin, so you can just literally stand there and slice away, right? [00:36:47] So it's really quick and simple. [00:36:49] Grab a cup of forks. [00:36:50] Go on, use your hands. [00:36:55] That's a good thing about having a doctor in the kitchen, to know that he's got nice clean hands. [00:37:00] And then the avocados, which I've kept to put on last, because they're a little bit softer, of course. [00:37:06] I love that. [00:37:06] Some of those... [00:37:14] So in literally 60 seconds or so, you can put together a beautiful healthy salad. [00:37:20] So yes, there's a few minutes of chopping earlier in the day. [00:37:24] Put a little bit more in there. [00:37:27] So stingy with that dressing. [00:37:29] Don't be stingy. [00:37:31] Good girl. [00:37:31] And then a few corn chips. [00:37:33] And look at this. [00:37:34] Like, you know, I know that corn chips have a little bit more fat in them. [00:37:37] So I've just got literally four or five corn chips and you'll get that little bit of crunch that you're looking for without all the calories and fat. [00:37:45] So that's tip number one. [00:37:47] Let me taste that. [00:37:49] I want to taste that too. [00:37:50] Get in there. [00:37:51] Get in there. [00:37:51] It's good. [00:37:54] While I'm eating. [00:37:55] So good. [00:37:56] Part of the issue, sorry, has, and so many viewers write about it, is the amount of time it takes and the mess that you make me do it. [00:38:01] So deal with the cleanup as well. [00:38:03] So the cleanup is a nightmare for all of us. [00:38:05] Don't worry, I have to clean up at my house too, and I don't like it either. [00:38:08] So the one-pot cooking thing, I think, is going to be your best friend. [00:38:13] Definitely. [00:38:13] So you think of a casserole or a stew, that all happens in one pot, but I thought I'd show you something a little different. [00:38:18] I've got a big fillet of salmon here, and I've roasted it on one tray. [00:38:22] So it's one tray cooking. [00:38:24] Thinly slice the beets, and I've just put that around with a little oil. [00:38:27] And then the salmon, I've put an herb crust on it. [00:38:29] And again, a really simple dressing or vinaigrette that you can just go ahead and spoon over the top there. [00:38:35] And you've got all the flavors in the same pan, which is really, really delicious. [00:38:38] You literally have no dishes there. [00:38:39] You throw the aluminum foil away and you're done. [00:38:41] That's right. [00:38:42] That's it. [00:38:42] It's so simple. [00:38:43] So get a fork and dive in there, Sarian. [00:38:46] Tell me what you think. [00:38:47] I want to taste one of these things. [00:38:49] And how long you cook it for? [00:38:51] So the salmon's only in the oven for about 12, 15 minutes, depending on how thick the fillet of salmon is. [00:38:57] But it's a beautiful big piece. [00:38:59] You know, if you're cooking for a family of four or so, it's really easy. [00:39:02] It's delicious. [00:39:03] Would the family like this? [00:39:04] I love the beets. [00:39:05] Oh, yeah, my son, I think, would love the beets and they're healthy because I'm always trying to figure out what's something for me that's healthy. [00:39:11] Surprise your family with this. [00:39:13] If this is 12 minutes of work, this is a good investment of time. [00:39:15] Yeah, definitely. [00:39:16] All right, you know what? [00:39:16] Take us home for the kids tonight. [00:39:18] Tell me you made it for them on the way home. [00:39:19] They'll be so impressed. [00:39:20] So impressed. [00:39:21] We'll wrap it up for you. [00:39:22] What do you think, Curtis? [00:39:22] I'm going to be impressed. [00:39:23] Absolutely. [00:39:23] You got it. [00:39:24] Hopefully. [00:39:25] Make everyone's chores a little less painful. [00:39:27] You can find all your recipes at DrRoz.com. [00:39:28] First, I want to thank you very much for your chores. [00:40:33] That's coming up on Monday on Dr. Oz. [00:40:41] Remember, I don't know, I was disagreeing over the color of that dress. [00:40:44] You know, was it white and gold or was it blue and black? [00:40:47] You all remember that. [00:40:48] Well, it's too bad butterflies can't talk because they would have added a few more colors to the debate. [00:40:53] See, I see colors then to cells called cones. [00:40:56] And humans have three types of cones. [00:40:58] We can see green, blue, and red. [00:41:00] And you combine these colors, remember, from art class when you were a kid. [00:41:02] But butterflies, well, they have five types of cones. [00:41:06] They have the green, blue, and red, too. [00:41:07] And then there are two more mystery colors that our brains can't even process. [00:41:11] Plus, I'm not a butterfly, so I can't imagine it. [00:41:13] But imagine that much more complex the world, so they can see all kinds of beautiful things. [00:41:16] The audience, when it comes to color, Can you guess what animal that takes the prize? [00:41:23] What do you think? [00:41:25] You would never guess this one. [00:41:27] It's called the mantis shrimp. [00:41:29] It's the butterfly of the sea. [00:41:31] It's got not three, not five, 16 color cones. [00:41:35] So they can see all kinds of wacky things. [00:41:36] Imagine what can be seen with that much. [00:41:38] Well, that's maybe perhaps how beautiful he can see. [00:41:41] It reflects how beautiful he actually is. [00:41:43] Now it's time, for in case you missed it, first, if you ever have the chance to save a life from a cardiac arrest, I want you to be ready for it. [00:41:49] Because odds are it's going to be someone that you know, someone that you love. [00:41:52] For every minute that passes without someone starting CPR, the chance of surviving by a cardiac arrest goes down 10%. [00:41:58] So, when minutes are all you have, there are three things you've got to do. [00:42:01] You've got to call 911. [00:42:02] You all know that. [00:42:02] Get people to come help you. [00:42:04] Begin CPR on the chest compressions. [00:42:06] Super easy to do. [00:42:07] Then use an AED. [00:42:08] It looks like this. [00:42:09] You're going to see them all over the place now. === Two Pads for Safety (00:23) === [00:42:11] And if you don't know how to do CPR or use an AED, all you've got to do is learn, which is super simple. [00:42:16] Because you're going to save the life of someone you know. [00:42:18] Now, there are Red Cross training classes all over the country. [00:42:27] Frankly, folks, it's just a matter of putting two pads on the chest and getting away. [00:42:30] The thing is automatic and it's safe. [00:42:31] Finally, please be careful of dubious people. [00:42:33] Make it seem like I'm endorsing their products, because I don't.
