Time Text
Today on Oz, you could be losing almost an hour of sleep every night and not know it.
The reason?
Pain. You've got a plan to tackle both your pain and your sleep so you can get a restful evening every night.
Plus, we're counting down the funniest sleep habits in America.
From weird noises...
Hard to figure that one out, isn't it?
...
to sleep positions.
Have a laugh.
It's good for your health and sleep.
Coming up next on Dr. Oz.
The funniest sleep habits in America that are keeping you up at night.
I log hours of sleep videos and look through thousands of pictures that you sent me.
Went from coast to coast and I picked the top five funniest sleep habits.
We went coast to coast, bed to bed, and couch to couch to find America's funniest sleepers.
Analyzing the funniest and most fascinating sleep habits that often keep us from getting a good night's sleep.
We found droolers and snorers.
Sleepwalkers and sleep talkers.
Little Debbie is here.
Even some sleep dancers.
And some of the funniest sleep habits come from our furry, poor-legged friends.
Today, how to beat these funny but pesky sleeping habits keeping you up at night.
Sleep specialist, Dr. Michael Bruce is here to help count down your funniest sleep habits.
We're going to start with number five in the countdown.
Funny sleep habits, they start young.
They really do.
Younger than you'd ever imagined.
This is a tie among three sleepy babies.
a tie.
This is a tie.
And her mom, Jack, you're here.
How often does Hannah speak in her sleep?
Every so often.
It's pretty much only when she's having an F-Pies reaction, but she's adorable.
She's so cute.
She really is.
Has it ever affected your sleep?
Of course.
She sleeps in our room.
So she was just doing it last night, babbling and talking up a storm.
So it's really common to have children do that at night.
We see it in a large percentage of kids.
The good news is it doesn't last forever.
Well, that's good.
Okay? But take as many videos as you can so you can show them at her wedding.
And it'll be great.
I promise.
I'm curious.
When you try to figure out what she's battling, I have this problem because my granddaughter's one.
Okay. And says all kinds of things.
I have no idea what she's trying to get out.
This one, she's talking about eating.
Eating. For sure.
I mean, she eats her hands usually.
Can I have a little kiss?
Sure. She's like candy.
Oh, she's like candy.
Oh, she's not happy about that.
All right.
I bet your first one will be snooze, not food.
All right.
Before I get to number four.
Guess what this sound is.
and careful.
Hard to figure that one out, isn't it?
That one's scary.
I don't have a baby elephant backstage.
I want you to take a look at who this sound belongs to.
*Pewds Screams*
Is that the craziest snore you've ever heard?
Yeah, by far, I've never heard a snore quite like that.
It almost sounded like a trumpet was kind of going off in the middle of the evening.
That was wild.
So I've heard lots of snores.
I am curious how the human body makes that kind of a cacophony all at once.
Every instrument in the orchestra was there.
Yeah, for sure.
Well, I think what's going on is there's a narrowing of the airway.
Right, and so because of the position that he was in and trying to suck in so much air at the same time, it's almost like he created a whistle.
He was like a human whistle, and that was kind of what we heard.
More like a kazoo.
Yeah, more like a kazoo is right.
You know, I don't think earplugs are going to work any one of those sound-canceling headsets.
Absolutely. Worth the investment.
Okay, now number three.
It's the funniest sleeve positions.
Music.
One of our funny sleepers, Donna, is joining us.
I think that position is called the thinker.
Is that right?
Yes. Let me see you do it.
Oh, yes.
Perfectly practiced.
Well, sometimes I'm a Zumba instructor, a gymnast, and a yogi.
But I think my favorite is the thinker because I go to sleep with a lot of things on my mind.
So it's funny how I should end up that way.
So it's practiced, actually.
It's sort of interesting.
You say common seat positions, and this is one of them.
This is called the, there's a name for it.
The fetal position.
The fetal position.
But this is a thinking fetal.
Right. Down a crouch stand like this.
Right. Look at Hannah over there.
What is that?
What is that guy doing?
Get that next to your Hannah.
So, I actually have a patient who does this exact same position, but does it actually upright at the end of their bed, and they're sitting there like this on the end of their bed.
It's actually not, believe it or not, it's not that uncommon to have this kind of position.
The good news is that you're lying down, and actually that's pretty good for your back, because as you bring your knees up, it helps open up your back.
So, it's actually pretty much a good position, and who knows what you might be thinking.
Yay. It was a good thing.
Smart things, I hope.
All right, now we're up to number two.
A lot of you probably feel like Oscar in the morning.
Yeah, boy, some mornings are just rough.
Get it rough?
No, I've got it.
I'm giving you my best stuff.
I get nothing back.
All right.
Is that common for dogs to have those issues?
It actually is.
So I have a French bulldog that sleeps in my bed with me and a chihuahua that sleeps in the bed with us.
And they will actually turn their head and they will start making all kinds of sounds.
I don't think they want to get out of bed anymore sometimes than I don't want to get out of bed.
So it's not an uncommon scenario to see a dog do that.
That howling was a little bit much.
It's not uncommon.
You've been on this show so many times teaching us not to have pets in our bed.
Well, no.
Here's what I've told people.
Look at the sleep doctor.
No, I've always said that I have pets in my bed.
They don't disturb my sleep.
I actually had a patient who had a Great Dane that was in their bed at one time.
That's going to disrupt somebody's sleep.
But generally speaking, you can sleep with pets in the bed as long as they don't disrupt your sleep.
All right.
I reprieve for my little Rosie.
She's not so little anymore.
Okay, we're up to number one.
You guys excited about this?
This is a good one.
Are you ready to find out the funniest sleep habit in America?
Drumroll, please.
Take it away!
And what exactly are you doing, ma'am?
It's a special code.
I was trying to open it.
Tomato cage.
The tomato cage.
Yeah, I was doing a special thing.
Oh, the tomato cage wasn't open.
And where is this tomato cage?
Someplace. Let's meet the funniest speaker in America, Patty.
I love you.
I'm one of 16 million people.
This video went viral, obviously.
We got to see you.
So, how often do you sleepwalk like that?
Sleep, talk, and dance?
I really don't know.
All I can tell you is it's not that often.
And I've been to, you know, I went to a sleep study.
They found nothing wrong with me.
So it's actually quite common.
I don't take any kind of medication.
Yeah, well, one of the things we see is the more sleep-deprived a person is, the more likely they are to have some of these really complex behaviors.
I don't sleep good at all.
I can tell that you're dancing all night long.
What is that move by?
Do you dance a lot?
I love dancing, but that ain't my moves.
I got hot moves.
You got hot moves.
I got really good moves.
we see the missus that moves So, Michael, other than making a viral video of your friends or parents or siblings who are sleepwalking, what should you do if you run into someone who's asleep but dancing?
So, there's a big myth out there that you should never wake up a sleepwalker.
That's actually not true.
One of the things that we know, we just, from a safety perspective, we don't want, you know, God forbid you turned on the oven or a stove or something like that.
So, we want to actually, you go up to the person and very, very gently, you know, you might put a hand on them and say, hey, I want to guide you back to the bedroom.
Be careful, though, because you could very easily get a right cross because somebody might They're going to be very startled when you wake them up.
So you want to walk over to the person, very gently put your arm and say, hey, you know what?
You're out of bed.
Let's get you back to bed and sort of slowly guide them back to the safe side.
You know, two nights ago, let me tell you, I had a dream that...
Was I in it?
Maybe I wish you were.
Because you are very handsome, I'm not telling you.
You are very kind.
So anyway, the other night, this was last week, I had a dream in the middle of the night that I was dying for chocolate and peanut butter.
So, when I woke up in the morning, believe it or not, there was a jar of Nutella and a jar of peanut butter with a peeled banana.
So I got up in the middle of the night and I ate that banana with peanut butter and chocolate.
I think I'm going to put you guys together for a while after the show.
We may need to have a little discussion.
When we come back, we'll tackle one of the biggest reasons you can't sleep.
Dr. Bruce is going to stick around with what you need to do so you're not up in the middle of the night.
Pay attention.
Okay. Thank you.
Thank you.
Next. Do you suffer from back or neck pain?
Are headaches and stiff joints keeping you up at night?
You could be losing an hour of rest every night and not even know it.
Break the cycle.
The plan for everybody to tackle both pain and sleep and get the shutout you deserve.
Next. You've seen the headlines.
You've heard the controversy.
Now, Dr. Oz fires back.
He responds to his critics and sets the record straight on the GMO movement Alternative health practices and his commitment to always fight for you Thursday April 23rd Dr.
Oz breaks his silence That's coming up tomorrow.
Thank you.
Every night, you could be losing almost an hour of sleep, and you may not even realize it.
The reason?
Pain. It could be in your back, your neck.
You get headaches, stiff joints.
Whether it's minor or chronic, it's keeping you awake at night.
Today, I've got a plan to tackle both your pain and your sleep so you can get a restful evening every night.
We're back with Dr. Michael Bruce.
So why is it that folks wouldn't be aware that...
Thank you.
I would think you'd be aware if pain was keeping you up at night.
So it seems really obvious, right?
I've got pain.
It's got to be affecting my sleep.
You know, I work in a pain center a couple of days a month, and here's what we've learned, is that a little bit of pain doesn't have a big effect, but if that pain lingers, it slowly starts to crack away at your sleep.
So then all of a sudden you get...
Anxious about sleep.
Then all of a sudden you can't fall asleep.
Then all you're thinking about is sleep.
And then all of a sudden this vicious cycle starts to occur because you can't stop thinking about sleep, which doesn't allow you to sleep.
It all crumbles apart.
It all crumbles apart, exactly.
So you say the first step is actually, I think paradoxically, to deal with anxiety.
Why is lowering anxiety so important?
Well, lowering anxiety turns out to be a major factor in the modulation of pain and what's going on.
I want you to take a field trip with me real quick.
I'm going to show you what we're going to do to help people lower their anxiety level and get a good night's rest.
Most people don't know this, but because of this level of anxiety that seems to occur, people say, oh my gosh, am I going to rest tonight?
Am I going to be in a good sleep position tonight?
Am I going to get even more pain tonight?
Well, that turns out to be a pretty big problem.
Not only that, people who have pain for extended periods of time, they become depressed, right?
You know, you're walking me outdoors.
I am walking you outdoors because one of the things that we're going to do is we're going to get a little bit of sunlight.
Why sunlight?
So sunlight turns out to have a traumatic effect on several different areas of the brain.
Number one, it resets your circadian rhythm.
Number two, it helps with mood.
So what happens is you get an elevated mood, your circadian rhythm gets reset, and if you do this once in the morning for 15 minutes and then in the afternoon when that slow dip seems to come in, it's going to help dramatically.
With your overall level of anxiety, depression, and sleep.
They let me out of my cage.
I know, it's nice.
Absolutely. So again, you have to do it twice a day.
Once in the morning.
Once in the morning, and then once in the afternoon.
Now, that's only step one of the program.
You also argued that we have to use OTC meds to deal with both sleep and with pain.
So it turns out that if you just treat the pain or you just treat the sleep, you miss out on the real component of the togetherness of it all.
So one of the things we now know is with over-the-counter medications, something like an ibuprofen and a sleep aid together, taken about 30 minutes before bed, it can actually help together allow the person to drift off.
So a gentle nudge.
So we actually tried this with Christine, who's in our audience.
You have some back pain, I understand.
I do.
Tell us to stand with us.
Yeah, please.
Unless your back's hurting too much.
Oh, no, I'm okay.
So how long did it take for it to work, if it worked at all?
A few days, and I feel much better.
So what you do specifically, you bought one pill that had...
A non-steroidal of some type, like a Motrin.
Yes, before I was taking ibuprofen alone, but combining it with the sleep aid was actually amazing.
It helped me sleep much better.
And how long would someone try that before they finally say, that's not working?
So I like to tell people that they should try it for about 10 to maybe 14 days, and if it goes any longer than maybe three weeks or so, that's when you probably want to talk with your doctor, because there could be something a little bit more significant going on than some mild low back pain.
But it helped you, huh?
It did.
Come on over here.
I want to take you to the last step, which is sort of an interesting thing.
Yes. Yes.
Yes. Yes.
Yes. Get some rest.
How I normally get rest?
Get in your normal starting sleep position.
Okay, it's probably just on my back and I toss and turn.
Okay, so a couple of different things to think about here.
So first of all, because of the way you're laying on your back, if you have a firm mattress, it's going to push up on your pelvis and it's going to cause low back pain.
So one of the things I'm going to do is I'm going to ask you to lift up your legs.
And we're going to put it and then cross your knees just like that.
Just like that.
So what that does is by lifting up your legs is it pulls the strain off of there.
The second thing we need to make sure of is that your pillow doesn't go too far down your shoulders.
So go ahead and put your...
So we want the pillow to come just to the nudge of your shoulders here.
And here's why.
Because if it's underneath your shoulders, it can actually elevate your neck and cause neck strain.
Right? But the good news here is...
Not everybody sleeps on their back.
Believe it or not, over 75% of people sleep on their sides.
So I want to show people a sleep position on your side.
Would you mind rotating to your side for me?
Allow me.
This is how I sleep now.
I used to sleep on my back, too.
Okay, so you're going to get in there.
So I lie like this.
All right, here we go.
Don't wake me up.
I just got some sunlight.
I'm feeling very relaxed.
All right.
How's this?
So there you go.
What do you think?
I'm doing the same thing.
So what we've got going on here, which is a little bit different, is we've got in between his legs, we've actually got a pillow.
This actually helps separate the hips a little bit so that we don't have so much strain going on your hips because a lot of people get hip pain.
I told you.
Then, one other thing we're noticing here is, you notice how he's bunched up the pillow a little bit.
I would actually rotate these and I would get a thicker pillow underneath your head and a thinner pillow between your legs because the space between your ear and your shoulder is wider.
So if you're a side sleeper, you want a thicker pillow with a thin pillow between your legs.
Your pillows are backwards.
Come on.
Stay with the program.
What is happening?
This is a thick pillow.
Thick pillow goes over here.
You're going to do it right.
All right, here we go.
Thin pillow goes over here.
Michael, there's room here if you want.
All right.
I'm not convinced that's such a great idea.
One last thing I know you want to talk about.
This is really important.
You can sit up.
So we also need to take advantage when we position the pillows of our thoughts.
Position our brain.
So how do you do that?
So when we're thinking about pain and we're about to get in bed at night, the thing to remember is that, first of all, you now have a plan.
Right? And so a lot of people, they get in bed, they say, I don't have a plan.
I don't know what's going to happen.
It elevates that level of anxiety.
So number one, you have a plan.
Number two is really doing something to lower that level of anxiety before you get into bed, whether that's take a hot bath, meditation, prayer, even just talking with your loved one to say, hey, I'm a little concerned here.
I'm a little nervous.
Knowing that somebody's there can really be a big comfort.
Yes, prayer is wonderful.
Great advice.
Exactly right.
Thanks for being here.
Nice to be here too.
If you can find out more from Dr. Bruce on how to stop pain from keeping your weight, then DrOz.com.
I'll be right back.
Thank you.
How do you get to sleep naturally?
I used to take sleeping pills because I just could not shut my brain off.
Now I do 20 minutes of breathing exercises and meditation before bed and turn off my phone.
It works every time.
Tell us on Facebook.com slash Dr. Oz.
Coming up, they're being consumed more and more by people in search of a quick and easy way to drop pounds.
But do these liquid meal replacements have any nutritional value?
Find out what's in them.
Are they helpful or potentially harmful?
Next. That's coming up tomorrow.
Thank you.
Consumer reporter Elizabeth Leamy recently alerted me to a large spike in sales for meal replacement shakes.
They're not new, these products, but they do appear to be drawing in a fresh, new group of buyers in search of a quick and easy way to drop pounds.
Liquid meal replacements have been around since at least the 1960s.
Now they're back and booming.
But these are not your mother's diet shakes.
Dozens of new products have come to market in recent years.
And they're flying off the shelves.
In fact, sales of liquid meal replacements have gone up as much as 30% in the past five years.
I lost 166 pounds.
I lost 65 pounds.
So, should you toss out your fork in favor of a straw?
Today, liquid meal replacements, are they helpful or harmful?
Thank you, Elizabeth Leamy.
Today we're taking a look at these drinks to see what's really in them.
I brought in nutritionist Dr. Ravina Brock.
To analyze the nutritional value of these liquid-replaced meals.
Thanks for being here.
Always a pleasure.
So we're going to divide them up.
We're talking about what's helpful about these meal replacements and what's potentially harmful as well.
There's one reason I've got to emphasize why millions of people believe that they're helpful is that they lose weight on them.
It does seem to work.
Why is that?
Well, it's because it's growth calorie restriction.
And when you restrict your calories drastically, you're bound to lose weight.
Which makes sense.
The question is, what do you pay?
It's a price.
And they are very impressive results.
And I'm going to emphasize one woman, Joelle, is joining us, who actually knows this better than most.
Because she's done the plan.
How are you, Joelle?
How are you?
So, if you don't mind, tell us your story using these meal replacements.
How have they helped you?
How have they not helped you?
Okay. So, I've been liquid dieting over eight years now.
I've tried several.
I normally try them for an occasion if I'm doing a wedding, if I just want a rapid weight loss period.
A month at a time.
I'll go on it.
I'll lose a good amount of weight from like 20 to 30 pounds.
Oh my goodness.
As soon as I phase into the maintenance plan, boom, I'm back at a big girl again.
It's just like...
What's the most amount of weight you've lost with them?
30 pounds.
30 pounds.
And you say as soon as you go back and there's a picture of you when you're on the lighter side.
You see the collarbone?
I see the collarbone.
How sexy it was, yeah.
That's true.
And from that size to...
The weight, the heavier size you go to, how quick a transition is that?
Oh, instantly.
Again, as soon as I started putting back the maintenance plan, like eating regular foods again, instantly the bloating, I'm gaining weight.
Dr. Rowe, do you hear these stories?
Surprise! Yeah, absolutely.
I get this from my patients all the time.
So what I tell my clients is, you start doing what you used to do, you start looking like you used to look.
So the point is, when you go back to eating food and you stop You know, doing the liquid meals, of course you're going to gain weight because you had drastically restricted your calories even though you had the sexy collarbone.
Right, right, right.
It is a nice collarbone, by the way.
Thank you.
I think part of it also is you don't learn to eat healthy on these meals.
And at least if you're going to use them, that should be part of the puzzle.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
Now, the next reason people...
Love these liquid meal replacements is their vitamin content.
And if you can, first off, explain how they're able to get all the vitamins into these products.
Well, first of all, it's about calories.
You know, these liquid meal replacement things contain calories, of course, and they do have vitamins.
But the other thing is that, you know, the nutrients that they are lacking are phytonutrients, vital phytonutrients that go a long way to protect you against cancer, against heart disease, some even boost immunity.
The real nutritional benefit comes from the magic is in real foods, Dr. Oz.
It's in here.
You see what I'm saying?
So these foods that we have, like kale, Swiss chard, sweet potatoes, oranges, all of these contain phytonutrients that protect you from chronic disease and go beyond just caloric, you know, benefit.
The thing is, you can't get this.
You can't get the magic of what's in here.
In a can.
So they have the vitamins because they get added in, but they don't have the real nutrients that come from real food, which becomes an issue because your brain is looking for these nutrients.
Yes. So you don't think they're nutritionally sound in general?
Not sound enough.
You know, the whole adage of a calorie is a calorie is really outdated, okay?
So forget the calories.
And the other thing is that your weight is regulated by a complex system.
You know, it's a regulatory system that involves your genetics, your hormones, and neurological factors.
Calories from, you know, nutrients from various food sources do not affect everyone in the same way.
Let me go back to this for one second.
So, yes, they're pre-counted calories.
That's one of the reasons they work.
What is the issue with that?
You don't think a calorie is a calorie?
No, a calorie is not.
No, the whole business of a calorie being a calorie is a very outdated thing.
The thing is, you know, you're going to get everybody's body, you know, responds to the calories from various food sources in a different way.
Got it.
Let me, if I can, Because this is a very appealing issue.
A lot of folks like to sit down at a liquid replacement meal.
It's all there.
No thinking is involved.
And you actually, at the same time, are in the belief that you're eating a healthy meal.
If calories aren't calories, then we're not going to get the long-term benefits.
It's a trick.
Let me point out what you're just emphasizing.
This is a food label, a typical food label, that's in these food replacements.
And this is interesting, because if I can pull out some of the key ingredients, notice the words in yellow.
What are they?
This is a very popular product, by the way.
Sugar. Fructose, sucralose, dextrose.
So these highlighted words emphasize that the few calories that are in here, because they are restricted, are made up of foods that don't give us nutrients.
They're empty calories, the few that are in there.
They're just a form of sugar or something else that's a sweetener like that.
So if you're going to try something like this, I want to make sure you're getting the most nutritious meal replacements available.
So you're going to look for these in the packaging.
You look for 10 to 15 grams of protein.
You're going to look for 3 to 5 grams of fiber.
And no more than one of these meal replacements per day.
We'll be right back.
Coming up next, spring is here, and we're making looking good easier for you without spending a lot of money.
Brush away winter with amazing discounts on spring cleaning products to keep you and your home in tip-top shape any time of the year.
Coming up next.
You've seen the headlines.
You've heard the controversy.
Now, Dr. Oz fires back.
He responds to his critics and sets the record straight on the GMO movement, alternative health practices, And his commitment to always fight for you.
Thursday, April 23rd Dr. Oz breaks his silence.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Hey, Simon.
Video shopping without spending a lot of money today.
We've got fantastic discounts and some great spring must-haves.
Consumer correspondent Elizabeth Leamy is sharing incredible deals that will be available for a limited time on DrOz.com.
First up, I know all the women are going to love.
It's the UPF 50 Plus Tunics by Cooley Bar.
What's UPF 50 be?
Well, first of all, in case anybody's worried, we're not turning your show into a fashion show.
These are health products because of that UPF 50. It stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor, which is even better than SPF because it protects you against the UVA and the UVB rays.
Plus, these are just good-looking, so you're going to look good now and keep your skin looking good into the future.
And this is just nice, light, breathable fabric.
You get a choice of a bunch of different patterns.
Please. Okay.
This could normally cost as much as $120, but just for you, Dr. Oz Show viewers, we have arranged a 52% discount.
So your final price, as little as $45.
I'm going to take one of these to Lisa.
Yeah. Nice.
Tell us who the second deal is from.
Okay, well, we've protected your body from sun.
Now we need to protect your face.
We've got two sun hats from San Diego Hat Company.
These are also UPF 50. But there's another neat feature.
You want to take your sun hat to the beach with you, right?
And stick it in your suitcase, which means it's going to get squished about like that.
But it pops right back into position.
Do I look good with this?
Oh! One A. I like it.
What do they cost?
Okay. Normally, $78.
Dr. Oz Show viewers, you get 55% off.
Final price, $35.
Good for allergies as well.
All right, this third price.
Okay, once again, how is this a health product?
Interesting. This is the eco-friendly steam mop by Sienna.
It's healthy because hot steam can actually kill germs without using toxic cleaners.
If you've got allergies, damp mopping is one of the key ways to kind of capture that dust that's irritating you.
If you've got kids, you can get the dust off the floor for them.
You want to give it a spin?
Hold it like this.
I practice, everybody.
I'm very good with a mop.
He needed practice, everybody.
So let's say Elizabeth spilled jam, which is so common of her.
Get the jam there.
Get the bottle out of the way.
Don't do that again, Elizabeth.
So you hit the white button here.
It's very simple.
It's very comfortable, not too heavy.
And then literally, you go over the jam.
And because this is a stress test, I really have to put it on top of it.
But watch what happens.
You go back once, twice.
It's disappearing.
And it's gone.
And this is what I like the most about it.
And that's about the most you'll ever be able to spill it anywhere.
And it's gone!
Okay. That is not bad.
What did that cost?
Alright, so pricing on this, normally $140, depending as much as $140, depending which version you choose.
51% discount just for Dr. Oz Show viewers, so as little as $65.
Very nice.
Very nice.
So you're off to the spa with us now.
Yes, this is the rotating spa brush from my spa life.
Personally, I do not have a spa life, which is why I'm interested in the do-it-yourself version.
And what's neat about this, try it out.
It's long enough, the handle, you can get your own back, which is why you would normally have to go to the spa to get something to help you out with that, right?
And let me show you one other thing.
This clear compartment here is where you can put a soap of your choice, something yummy, whatever you like, and that contributes to the exfoliation process.
And the timing is right.
We all want to get rid of that sort of dull winter skin and get ready for spring and summer.
All right.
Pricing? Pricing.
Let's get down to business here.
Normally $80, 54% off, $37.
And a vinyl product.
This is a very clear health opportunity.
Yes, okay, so these are the essential oils, skin and hair care products from Pretty Organic Cosmetics.
You get two of these skin items and one for your hair, actually for your hair.
These are simple, they're clean, they're organic, they're good for you, and they smell good.
Give it a smell there.
Oh, they're wonderful.
Yeah, kind of those simple essential oil scents.
I really like those.
And remember, with oils, a little bit goes a long way.
You get all three.
Pricing is normally $160, people.
51% off.
So your final prize, $79.
So here's the good news.
Everybody, everybody at home, you can all go to DrIse.com for these deals and some special bonus buys as well.
So go to the website and check out those specials as well.
What to do with the audience is the question.
Should they go home with something?
Can I go sit in the audience first so I get in on this?
No, you're not allowed.
Audience, you're all going home with the essential oils, skin and hair care, except compliments of pretty organic cosmetics.
We will be right back.
These plus-size models are making a big change on the runway.
Long criticized for perpetuating an unhealthy quest for perfection, they're turning the fashion industry on its head.

The acid industry has been long criticized for perpetuating an unhealthy quest for perfection.
But there's a new crop of women on a mission to change all that.
I want you to meet the plus-size models no one saw coming.
They won't let anything stand in their way.
In an industry where triple zero is the size du jour and a thigh gap is just about de rigueur, it's hard to find your place when your body looks, well, like everyone else's.
But these days, models who don't necessarily fit the mold are making waves and shaking things up.
Robin Lawley, who's a size 12, is in this year's Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.
So when one of the world's largest modeling agencies closed its plus division, plus size models, Inga Eriksdotir, Ashley Graham, Julie Henderson, Danielle Redman, and Markita Pring, Banded together to change the way the fashion industry defines beauty.
Calling themselves Alda, the Icelandic word for wave, these women are making waves of their own.
Their mission?
To encourage, inspire, and empower women of all shapes and sizes.
To accept and celebrate their bodies.
And to create a market for all those different body types in the fashion world.
A fashion statement the models of Alda believe is long overdue.
Please welcome Markita, Julie, Inga, and Danielle.
Come on out.
It's a pleasure.
How are you?
Pleasure. It's a pleasure.
Julie, how are you?
Hi, how are you?
Danielle, how are you?
Thank you for joining us.
I hope...
I hope these seats are tall enough for you.
They're fine, not bad.
So I've got to say, I've not met before, but I'm a little bit struck by the fact that if you're considered, and this is what women at home, I'm sure, are asking, if you're plus-sized, you know, what am I?
What are the rest of us?
Is that the right word?
Maybe, Markita, I'll start with you.
Honestly, Dr. Oz, we're so used to getting this question, and...
Part of what ALDA is trying to do is do away with the labels in the industry, honestly.
We are models.
We are here to represent healthy women and to inspire diversity in this industry.
Just be positive role models for everyone, regardless of size.
We want to embrace a healthy lifestyle, and that's what we're here to promote.
In the fashion industry, when you're above a size 8, you're a plus size model, which is very misleading when the average woman in America is a size 14. So it doesn't make any sense that it would be used, I think, in general.
When you become plus size in a store, that's not size 8, is it?
It's generally size 12 to 14 in the stores, but in the industry, size 8. You disagree?
You think it's bigger?
16s? They know.
So if I can talk about this magazine bust, you're shown doing athletic things.
That's what this image is from.
Why is being active...
And being seen in that context is so important for this body acceptance movement.
Well, the number on the scale is not really an accurate measurement of health, which I'm sure you know.
And you can be healthy at a size 16 or healthy at a size 2. I, for example, I used to do straight size modeling, and I really struggled a lot to be a size 4 because it wasn't natural for my body.
And I'm a tennis player, and I was asked not to play tennis because I would get too strong, too muscular, and not fit the right size.
I'm blessed that I'm able to model at a bigger size now and play tennis again, teach yoga, be active.
And we just wanted to have this spread to show you can be active at any size and be healthy.
And I also struggled in size around four.
I was a straight-sized girl.
And I was struggling to stay really, really skinny.
I was working out twice a day, eating really healthy.
I'm a viking.
My DNA is supposed to be big and curvy.
So I was fighting that.
Then eventually I learned about plus size.
Okay, this is where I fit in because I'm allowed to be my healthy, natural self.
Well, my daughter, Daphne, who's grown up, obviously.
Now, when she's a little girl, a friend of ours said she has big cells.
Because she was just bigger.
And you know, when she tries to get too small, that's not who she is.
And she knows it.
There's a difference between that and being healthy for a lot of people.
Let me, if I can, get a thought from one member of our audience that I know of.
Her name is Alexis, and you felt inspired to speak today.
I'd love to hear more about your story.
I know you were dreaming of being a plus-sized model.
So if you can share with us some of your thoughts on what's holding you back.
Well, just growing up, I always was larger.
Not necessarily fat or heavy, but...
By the sixth grade, I was five foot seven.
So just within my circle of friends and within, you know, school, it was harder because I was always seen as like the larger one or like the heavier one.
And when, you know, somebody tells you enough times that you're fat, you start to believe it.
And that's kind of what happened, which really affected my self-confidence growing up.
And I didn't have like these amazing women to grow up as.
Inspiration that I knew that it was okay to be my size and, you know, it was accepted.
And so it kind of took a damper on my self-confidence.
Oh, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Julie, why don't you start us off?
Well, first of all, I mean, I grew up a basketball player.
And being a basketball player, I want to be strong and healthy.
And I was actually an outcast as a kid, too, because I was a mix.
Back then, I was a mixed kid.
I was the only black kid in my school.
So I ate lunch by myself.
Basketball saved me.
I got a team.
I live my new team now.
I mean, these women inspire me.
I see them every day.
In this fashion world where skinny is in, you know, I mean, these women support me.
And I think for you, I would say, first of all, you're beautiful.
Thank you.
I mean, God, it's amazing.
But I would say start every morning doing one thing for yourself.
Like, even for me, we all have bad days.
I say, thank you for my hands.
I have great thick thighs, this face.
Appreciation first, no matter how bad you feel.
Yeah. Then do one little thing for yourself.
One thing that makes you feel good is making the phone calls to your friend or getting your nails done or saying your prayers.
Whatever it does to make you feel more in your skin.
Then find your team.
Look, I have my elder team.
Find a group of girls that support you, that you feel good about yourself.
Yeah. That's the first step, I would say.
Awesome. And don't compare yourself with anyone else.
Not comparing is a very smart move.
I mean, social media, go ahead.
That's imperative, yeah.
Social media these days, with magazines, with all of the thin women that are out in all of the advertisements, just don't pay attention to that stuff.
It doesn't help anybody.
We are all so unique and so different in our ways.
There's no need to try and conform to what society tells you is normal.
What we're here to do right now is to make a change and to inspire change and represent diversity because, look, we all look so different.
And that's what it's all about.
Just be you.
Do you.
So, Markita, what can folks at home right now who want to be supportive, who want to actually push the fashion industry to do exactly what you were all talking about, how do they participate?
Well, honestly, we encourage you ladies to speak up.
It's so important to use your voice.
And with social media these days, you can have such a strong impact by tweeting, by hashtagging, going on Instagram, and commenting on magazines, Instagrams, and companies, stores that you want to shop in, but they don't necessarily cater to your size.
Tell them that you want to see...
More diversity represented, that you want to see curvier bodies, that you want to see a wider range of the sizes that they actually sell.
Let them know.
Speak up.
It's so important, and I can't stress this enough, to come together and to just use your voice.
And also, like...
Hashtag. Alda has this great hashtag called Beauty Beyond Size.
And to me that is so important.
We represent so much more than just our sizes.
So start hashtagging away and just be loud.
Use your voice.
Use the internet.
I got a deal.
Here's what I want to do.
Because I believe so much in what you're saying.
We've got millions of folks watching the show right now.
I'm going to show my support via my Twitter account, at Dr. Oz.
Make sure you go there and then retweet.
The message I put on there, highlighting what you guys are saying.
Let's get the word out.
Let's make this a big movement for the right reasons.
We'll be right back.
Dr. Oz fires back.
He responds to his critics and sets the record straight on the GMO movement, alternative health practices, and his commitment to always fight for you.
Thursday, April 23rd.
Dr. Oz breaks his silence.
That's coming up tomorrow.
*Dramatic music*
This year's show has, how many of you played with Barbie dolls?
Raise your hands when you're growing up.
Everyone loves Barbie dolls.
Girls today still love Barbie, but with her perfect skin and body, some experts say she sets girls up for body image problems later in life.
That's why this really caught my attention.
This is Lamely.
It's a new doll.
It's a line based on girls that, you know, sort of looking the average way.
So this doll looks like the average young woman.
And this fashion dog comes with stickers that make her look more human.
So, for example, you have little stickers here.
You can get freckles if you want freckles.
You can get acne if you want acne.
And look down.
I love this.
You have salite, the most dreaded of all things.
So you take these little stickers out, and you can put them.
So, for example, here, this is one I hear about a lot.
Here's Lamely with some stretch marks.
See the stretch marks?
She had a baby.
You see the stretch marks there?
See that?
And this is my favorite.
Of course, I'm a surgeon.
This woman had a successful appendectomy.
See the little scar?
Little stitches there?
Look at that.
The toy company was started by a young man who struggled with body image issues, and its slogan, and it's a good one, is average is beautiful.
Lambly plans to include $40 in its line, too.
Now it's time for, in case you missed it, first up, it's a growing trend.
Are you turning to liquid meal replacements because you think of them as full of vitamins and an easy way to lose weight?
At best they are because they're increasing in their sales quite a bit.
Here's my essential guide that you need to look at before you buy a liquid meal replacement.
In each serving, I would recommend that you take and ensure you have 10 to 15 grams of protein and at least 3 to 5 grams of fiber, and no more than one of these meal replacements per day.
Finally, please be careful of dubious people online that make it seem like I'm endorsing their products, because I don't.
