Dr. Oz Exposes Supplement Scams: What You Need to Know! | Dr. Oz | S6 | Ep161 | Full Episode
| Copy link to current segment

Time Text
For six years, I've made it my mission to help you take control of your health and give you choices to achieve that goal.
So when I see products that use my name and image to trick you into buying them, I'm concerned.
I don't endorse these products.
I have no idea what's actually in them.
And some of their supportive research has recently been discredited.
So for the second time, my team and I have gone undercover to expose the online scams that are taking you and your health for a ride.
Todd Cooperman from Consumer Lab is here.
He did two tests.
The first test was the supplements that PLN, the company, sent us.
It came right off the assembly line, right from them.
What did you find?
Well, these products that were sent by the company, every single one of them failed our tests.
They did not contain the listed amount of active ingredients that they had on the label.
So these products that are so commonly being bought, sent by the company to us, didn't have what was promised on the label?
No.
They did not.
They all failed the test.
The second category wasn't that we bought, because we thought maybe they'd be a problem if we bought them online.
And these are supplements that were, again, bought online, same exact supplements.
What did you find here?
The results were a little bit different for the products that were bought online.
The Forsklin product actually passed testing.
The Garcinia Cambogia, however, had only 13.5% of the active ingredient that it listed on the label.
Green coffee bean extract product.
Now this one, it didn't even indicate the amount of active ingredient on the label.
So we applied a minimum.
A minimum based on clinical studies using green coffee bean.
And even just with that minimum, it only had 12% of the minimum.
So two out of the three failed here.
So in summary, we had six samples we could test.
Five of the sixth.
Did not meet the standards that you would have expected.
Are those surprising to you, those results?
Yeah, those are terrible results.
I mean, we test a lot of herbal supplements.
These are terrible results.
In the U.S., a product is required by the FDA to have 100% of what it lists on a label, and five out of six did not.
Alright, so we reached out to Private Label Nutraceuticals and asked them to respond to our lab results, and they said in part, Private Label Nutraceuticals continues to make every effort to ensure that our products are of the highest quality and that the finished products we supply to our clients are independently tested, verified, and meet label claims.
Then right afterwards, they sent us a cease and desist letter and threatened to sue us if we talked about this publicly.
So I wanted to see exactly how common this was, so I asked Todd to look into his own research on weight loss supplements.
So you went back and tried to figure out how prevalent this is.
Right.
You know, it's interesting.
We found that if you walk in off the street to a store and buy an herbal weight loss supplement, you have about a 13% chance of a problem with that supplement.
Not great.
If the product is exclusively sold online...
You have a 41% chance of a problem.
So you've increased your risk by about three times if you're buying a product that's exclusively sold online.
I'm going to underline that one more time.
You buy a product that's only sold online, more than a three-fold chance that you'll have a problem compared to the one that you buy in a store.
So I've got to say, having done this...
I addressed this issue several times now.
Are we making a dent?
Are we changing the way Americans are thinking about this process?
Actually, at Consumer Lab, we do a survey of people who use supplements every year, thousands of people.
And just in this last year, we found a 25% decrease.
In the number of people who are using weight loss supplements, it was the most dramatic finding in the survey.
So the things that you were saying are clearly having an impact on the marketplace.
I'm proud of you all.
It makes a difference when you guys take these messages and spread the word.
Consumer Reporter, thank you very much, Todd.
Consumer Reporter Linda Gleamy has investigated weight loss supplement fraud.
She's joining me now to share safety measures that you need to take.
So what are the problems with these weight loss supplements?
Why is this such an issue now?
This is an easy money industry.
And easy money attracts sketchy activity.
So one possible way to protect yourself is to buy your supplements from big-name brick-and-mortar retailers because, frankly, they've got more to lose, namely their reputation.
So we're talking, you know, GMC and CVS and Walgreens and Walmart and Target, those kinds of stores.
Is it only weight loss supplements, or are there other categories of supplements that are...
That we're being conned with online.
Weight loss supplements are a huge problem, as you just showed.
The other two that have the most recalls are bodybuilding supplements and also sexual enhancement supplements.
And as you can imagine, there could be a lot of fraud because it's hard to figure out whether they're really working and measure progress, especially in the bedroom.
You could measure progress, but it's not always black and white.
So I know from firsthand experience how many of you are targeted by online marketers.
So if someone gets an email today.
And there's a big ad out there.
How do they know if this is too good to be true?
Well, come on.
Legitimate companies do not advertise their products in spam emails and internet pop-up ads.
So here is my advice to everybody.
Be the hunter, not the hunted.
Now, what the heck does that mean?
It means do your research and do business with companies that you seek out, not the ones that come after you.
Come on over here.
Let's show us, folks.
The kinds of things that we're seeing.
This is the number one classic way that people are getting ripped off.
Walk us through what they're looking at here.
Yeah, this one is a doozy.
Extreme claims are the number one tip-off.
Here's a pill that is supposed to get rid of wrinkles.
I mean, look at that.
The natural pill that erases age.
I mean, I don't know of anything that erases age, unfortunately.
And then the second biggest tip-off to a rip-off.
Is if it has your picture on it.
And you've said it a million times yourself.
Maybe it'll help if I say it.
Dr. Oz does not endorse products, right?
They're using and abusing your name.
It's actually independently pretty good data that you're going to get a rip-off product if my picture's associated with it.
There you go.
And an online ad that comes to you in your spam box.
So how do you know if you're getting a legitimate supplement?
Because there are some that actually are worth getting.
Well, first of all, don't just listen to what your friends suggest.
Research the supplement's benefits and side effects on legitimate websites.
So we're talking about things like ConsumerReports.org and also FDA.gov, MedlinePlus, and so forth.
Then look for independent third-party seals of approval.
That means that these third parties have actually tested these supplements to make sure that they have the ingredients they say they should.
So, for example, the U.S. Pharmacopeia.
There it is right there.
NSF International and Consumer Lab has one as well.
So the things that we can all do, and you're already making a big dent, let's push it even further.
Listen, last year, when I confronted Tar Inc., the video you just saw, I thought the game was up.
That the online weight loss supplement industry would get the message and clean up their act.
But I have learned that this is a very dangerous neighborhood for us to travel.
There are too many unscrupulous marketers going after your money with bogus products.
And the industry itself is putting out discredited studies with unsubstantiated claims.
That's why we don't talk about herbal weight loss supplements anymore on this show.
That's also why I want you, the buyer, to be aware of too good to be true weight loss promises, especially when they're being sold online.
We'll be right back.
Next, we're getting the inside scoop.
The biggest health headlines that everyone is talking about.
From celebrity rehab and coping with blindness to Hollywood battles with Lyme disease.
We're breaking it all down with Inside Edition's Debra Norville.
Coming up next.
All new Oz.
How NASCAR's Danica Patrick speeds past stress.
If you're racing in that car and you have to go pee, what do you do?
Plus, it's a new method of eating called peeing.
All new Oz.
That's coming up on Monday.
From Ozan Barr's announcement that she is going blind to a real housewife who checked herself into rehab They're the biggest celebrity health stories making headlines around the world right now.
And here to help break it down for all of us is the host of Inside Edition and my good friend, Debra Norval.
Good morning.
Thank you.
Thank you.
So first, the health headline.
Everyone's talking about comedian Roseanne Barr's revealing that she's losing her vision.
You may have seen her written about this a bit.
Give us a little bit of background.
Yeah, Roseanne made this announcement that really just staggered everybody.
She's 62 and she fears she is going blind because she has macular degeneration and glaucoma.
And the result is it's almost like...
Parts of her vision are disappearing.
If you've seen her on the red carpet, she's wearing dark glasses to protect her eyes from the bright lights.
And this is a warning to everybody.
If you're over 50, we did this story on Inside Edition.
Get your eyes checked.
Not going to the eyeglass guy, but go to the place where they look at your retinas and make sure that you are safe because this is really serious stuff.
Let me show you, if I can, what's going on with Roseanne's eyes.
So let's say you're looking at a beautiful mountain vista.
You see how it's all crisp and in focus?
That light goes in the back of your eyes.
You see the mountain.
It goes from the lens here into the back.
And here there's the retina.
And the retina gets little splotches, little defects.
Those cells begin to die off.
Those are important cells, these defects.
Hurt the middle of your vision.
It's called central vision.
When you look out through the eye, this beautiful vista now looks cloudy in the middle, but it's crystal clear and focused on the outside over here.
That's the first thing she has.
She also has glaucoma, where you have too much pressure buildup.
The eyeball literally is being pushed on, and that affects the nerve in the back of the eye.
Because of that, you lose the peripheral vision.
So she's losing the central part of her ability to see.
And the outside parts as well.
Having both together is not common, but it happens.
And unfortunately, it can lead to blindness, which is why it's such a tragic story.
The question, of course, is what are you going to do about it?
You mentioned the glasses.
Yeah, she's wearing the dark glasses to protect from the bright light.
But the other thing she's doing is she's smoking weed.
Because marijuana is, I mean, you're the doctor here.
It can be helpful in the pressure.
And she finds that she's having relief for him.
So she's got medicinal marijuana.
Still very early information on the pot part.
But you know what?
What we're also doing, and I think folks who are told this for their doctors immediately, is leafy green vegetables.
It's such a simple idea, but it's so effective for preventing macular degeneration because it resuscitates those platchy areas that are dying off.
Really?
Yeah.
You know what?
Everything is leafy green vegetables.
Everything.
Just like eat salad all the time to be in good shape.
And you'll see what you're doing.
Exactly.
The Real Housewives continue to make headlines.
First, my friend Yolanda Foster posted this photo with her 15-year-old son Anwar.
She's continuing her battle with Lyme disease.
Here's the caption on this Instagram photo.
I was very moved by that photo.
And she's really a poet.
Here's what she wrote.
She said, blood makes you related, but loyalty makes you family.
Isn't that beautiful?
And she went on to say the unwavering support of her family has gotten her through this very uncertain maze.
It's been really hard for her.
She's got Lyme disease bad.
She was diagnosed three years ago, and it has really impacted her life.
It's hard for her to read.
It's hard for her to write.
It's hard for her to watch television.
She's really been absent from the show a lot this season.
They've moved into an apartment because it's just an easier house for her to manage than the big fancy houses that she has with her husband David.
And she is literally...
I know you guys were emailing from Europe where she's seeking treatment.
This is really a challenge, and the problem is it's often very difficult to diagnose Lyme disease, and that's probably the case with Yolanda.
They didn't diagnose it early enough, and she's having to deal with all the aftereffects of that.
Absolutely.
And thoughtfully, a lot of folks are doing a Lyme disease challenge.
How many of you have seen this challenge?
I've seen it.
You've seen it?
Yeah.
Have you done it yet?
No.
All right.
You have to take a bite out of a Lyme.
I've done it.
Eat the pulp?
No, just the inside.
Just suck it.
Like tequila?
Yeah, like tequila.
Imagine having tequila but without the tequila.
There I am doing it.
Yolanda did it.
Her daughter Gigi did it.
There's Yolanda from a hospital bed doing this.
Are you willing to do it?
Sure, I'll do it.
Here's your lime.
Pick a lime.
You pick the lime.
Pick a lime, any lime.
Okay, I'll take the one in your hand.
Pick a lime.
Okay, great.
There's a napkin.
Did you just suck it?
Yes.
Bite into it.
You're right.
And then they grimace.
I bring tears to everyone's eyes.
Oh, wow.
My dentist will not be happy.
No.
But we'll do it.
For Lyme disease.
Go do the challenge.
We've got to post it up on Oz.com.
Please take advantage of the opportunity to spread the word.
Okay, Real Housewives continues the story.
Kim Richards has checked herself into rehab.
What is going on?
This is her fourth time going to rehab.
And you really have to credit Kim with acknowledging she's got a problem and she's trying to deal with it.
And the situation happened recently.
She was at a hotel in Beverly Hills.
Late at night, time to leave, you know, last call, she didn't leave.
There was a situation, the police were called, and she got a little bit physical with the police.
She is the first to admit, I made a mistake, I own this mistake, and she has checked herself into rehab, and hopefully this will be the time that works.
You know, anytime cops are involved, it changes the complexion of it.
So maybe that's the shake-up she needs, but she's got a lot of friends, she's got a lot of family who are behind her, and so hopefully this will be...
You know, the fourth time will be the charm.
You know, when I first started the show, I was given advice by someone who'd been the limelight of Fairmont.
And he said, never be the last one at the party.
Yeah.
Never be the last one at the party.
And honestly, is it the best thing when you are struggling with something like...
An alcohol problem to be as prominent in the limelight as someone on a TV show like this?
The answer is probably not.
So again, being in rehab gets her out of the limelight and gives her a chance to focus on the things that she needs to.
So we wish her well.
And let me speak, if I can, about supermodel Chrissy Teigen.
She's the latest to post these positive body images of herself on Instagram.
She's embracing her stretch marks.
So here's the caption.
Let's go up there and talk about this.
She's got bruises from apparently dumping kitchen drawers and handles on her body.
So what is going on here?
Okay, so we love Chrissy.
A, because she's beautiful.
B, she's a klutz like all the rest of us.
So she's got these bruises.
But the bruises weren't what the people were looking at.
They're going, oh my God, she has stretch marks and she's embracing because she said, hello, stretchies, when she put the picture out there.
Can I just say this?
If a Sports Illustrated supermodel puts her stretch marks out there, she's relatable.
If a married mother of three does it, she's let herself go.
So it's just a different standard out there, guys.
That's very true.
But, you know, she looks pretty good.
That's from the White House Correspondents' Dinner.
Oh, yeah.
We're not hiding anything when you're Chrissy Teigen.
This picture is just fabulous.
So this was taken this weekend.
She was at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.
You know, actually, I played sports with her.
We played a celebrity football game.
Fun.
So I know she can get those bruises because she's very competitive.
So she'll go for the ball.
She'll go for it every time.
I applaud her for spreading the word that even supermodels aren't perfect.
I love you.
Thank you for being here.
Thank you so much.
We'll be right back.
Coming up next.
The queen of Twitter and all that's buzzing, Yvette Nicole Brown is here, testing health products, making a splash all over social media.
We're getting to the core of the hottest trends happening on the Internet.
That's next on The Dr. Oz Show.
Congratulations, Dr. Oz, 1,000 episodes.
You are truly the wizard of medicine.
We're in the middle of working over here at Extra, but I had to stop to say congratulations, Dr. Hunt!
Today we're testing out health products trending all over social media, and I can think of only one person I'd want to do this with.
She's the queen of Twitter and all that's buzzing.
Please welcome Yvette Nicole Brown.
Oh, I am so happy you are here.
I'm so happy to be here.
I feel like I know your whole family, and it's my time to meet you now.
Well, we all love you.
Oh, I love all the Oz's.
So would you consider yourself a product junkie?
I'm kind of a product junkie.
If they say that it works, I buy it.
I don't care.
I believe everything.
Very gullible.
But I want you to be discriminating today.
I'm going to show you three ideas that I've looked into a little bit.
I'm curious about them, though, and I want your ideas.
This is important.
I want the audience to get involved as well.
So let's go back.
Test the products first.
Then you have to give your insights on whether you think it's a trend or you should forget about it.
Okay.
First, here it is.
This is a light therapy mask.
Yes.
You can turn it on.
Oh, okay.
That little button.
Power.
They claim that it clears and cleans skin.
They say there's a blue light.
See the blue light that's there?
I do.
That blue light kills bacteria clogging your skin, and the red light helps reduce inflammation and acne spots.
We're going in?
All right.
Let's go in.
Ooh.
Okay.
Ooh.
I gotta say, I feel very sexy right now.
How do you feel?
You look hot.
I feel in a sci-fi way.
Yeah.
It's kind of like a fence mask.
It is.
It is.
Do you feel anything?
I look like a superhero.
Yeah, I like it.
You do?
I do.
I mean, I don't know exactly what it does, but I do like it.
You don't get claustrophobic?
Again, anything they give me, I'm like, yes!
You don't feel claustrophobic in there?
I didn't.
I liked it.
I like a little cocooning.
This is cocooning.
I guess it is easier than going to a dermatologist.
That's true.
You have very pretty eyes through this.
Oh, thank you, Dr. Oz.
So would you do this for 15 minutes a day?
That's what you have to do.
I would do this for 15 minutes a day.
Because you've got to try to see if it works, right?
So you have to vote now.
You guys think you should trend or end?
Trend.
What do you guys think?
Trend?
Trend.
You know, I gotta say, anything that looks this awkward has to work.
I agree.
And this blue and red light therapy, it actually works for acting.
Oh, good.
I need that.
I need that.
So you're right.
Okay, we're going to trend on that one.
Let's move over here.
Okay, let's go.
This is a different one.
Okay.
This is a fruit core challenge.
I have looked at all these coring devices.
Yes.
You know much about them?
I don't.
So these are all the options out there.
There are so many darn options.
I have no idea which ones work for what fruit.
I don't even know if they work for any fruit.
I just want to know if we're competing with each other.
Yes, we are.
All right, watch out.
We have 30 seconds.
Okay.
There's nothing sharp except the coring devices, in which there are six.
Okay.
You can use any fruit you want to cut.
I'll put 30 seconds on the clock.
Are you ready, Yvette?
Yeah.
30 seconds on the clock.
I'm ready.
Go.
I haven't started yet.
All right, go.
Forget about the start.
So coring, she's coring.
That one works.
But you've got to cor them out.
Ah! Ah! Ah! No!
Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah!
All right.
Ah, what a catastrophe.
I won.
Did I win?
How do you define winning by that?
Did I win?
You said make the most mess.
Whoever makes the most mess wins.
Didn't he say that?
No, I didn't say make the most mess.
I said, I bet we'll make a mess.
Okay.
First of all, you're in the odd couple, right?
I am on the odd couple.
Okay, so would Felix be happy with this?
Felix would hate this.
Felix is the real persnickety clean one.
He would hate this.
Oscar would love this.
Which one are you more like?
Uh-huh.
Allegedly Oscar.
Allegedly.
You are like an Oscar?
Allegedly.
Shh, don't tell anybody.
So what do you think about these things?
What kind of a core is that, by the way?
You threw half the apple away.
That's really big.
Oh, that's mine.
I did that.
That's my mistake.
Yeah, I liked it because I was just trying to beat you.
I am very proud of my pear.
I did this.
You do a wonderful pear.
That's a wonderful pear.
That's a beautiful pear.
It's a beautiful pear.
So what do you think of these devices?
Some of this is a little scary.
I didn't even try the pineapple because I didn't trust myself.
So if you actually do this right, see, look at that.
That's cool.
Here.
Oh, it's spiral cuts.
Thank you, Uncle Al.
I love feeding you back.
It's a little good.
So, trend or end on these things?
Do you think it's worth it or not?
Definitely trend.
You do?
Look, I'm doing a pineapple and it's really easy.
I was afraid to try it, but it's working.
We got another trender.
Now, I want you to look at this.
It's a YouTube tutorial.
There have been many, many YouTube tutorials like this done for this next product, and he's gotten millions of hits.
Literally.
Okay.
Have a look.
All right, so these are called lip enhancers.
They're different sizes of them.
And Brooke is my producer over there, but you know about these.
Are we supposed to moisten our lips?
So you want to moisten your lips a little bit.
You do?
Okay.
You want to get them wet around your lips.
And then you want to put it on.
And what do they do?
They're going to suction your lips.
And they do what?
They're going to make them a little bigger.
A lot of people don't need anything to make them.
I might have stained my lips, sir.
Voluptuous and juicy as they are.
I don't need this.
What do we do?
Okay.
I look like Mick Jagger.
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
That was worth it.
What do you guys think?
What do you think?
I understand what it is, the suction aspect, but I don't know about this one.
I don't know.
For black people, it's an end it.
All right, we're going to end this one.
Although, I've got to say, it's probably the most popular thing out there now.
Really?
Okay.
I bet people go to this site and say, you know what?
I don't care what Dr. Oz was saying.
Like, if you suck it in, you do feel your lips being sucked in, and the suction could make them bigger.
So, yeah.
What do you guys think?
Trends!
Somebody was very excited.
You hear how excited he was?
Yeah, we had a lot of guys saying trends.
Yeah, trends, yeah.
Oh, well.
Yeah.
Coming up, are you living with constant headaches?
So persistent, they become debilitating.
Over-medicating may even be making them worse.
Stop letting headaches destroy your life.
The plan to free yourself from chronic head pain, naturally.
Next.
All new Oz.
How NASCAR's Danica Patrick speeds past stress.
If you're racing in that car and you have to go pee, what do you do?
Plus, it's a new method of eating called peeing.
All new Oz.
That's coming up on Monday.
Anyone who's ever had a headache, and that's about 90% of us, knows that they can be nagging and frustrating.
But when you live with chronic, constant headaches, they can be debilitating and feel endless with no end in sight.
That's what's happening to Brandy, who's spending her life looking for the next magic pill to make her chronic headache pain go away.
It's a pounding sensation.
It feels like somebody's taking a sledgehammer to my head.
My head just feels like it's gonna explode.
My chronic headaches.
The pain at night is unbearable.
I don't ever get a full night's sleep.
I wake up every two hours.
I never feel rested in the morning.
My headache started out just as a nagging feeling I got every once in a while.
Until they slowly progressed to maybe two to three times a week and the pain got worse and now it's just got to the point that it's at least once a day that I'm getting a severe, severe headache.
My headaches have gotten so bad that I actually had to leave my job.
I feel like a lot of the reason I have the headaches is because I'm under a lot of stress.
About eight to nine months ago I got a divorce and my mother passed away and she was really the last.
A member of my family that I had.
So now it's just me and my son.
I take care of him completely.
I have no support system.
I also feel like I'm not the best mom that I could be.
There's times that he'll want to go outside and play, and if I have a headache, I don't want to go to the playground.
Sometimes I don't even have the energy to play with him because my head is hurting so bad.
I've taken over-the-counter pain medications, but none of them work, and I don't want to rely on a prescription medication.
I feel like my chronic headaches are controlling my life and I just don't want to live like this anymore.
Brandi's joining us.
How have these chronic headaches changed your life?
The biggest thing is my life with my son.
Now that I've become a single mother, I need to have the energy to spend with him.
There's times that he'll want to go to the playground.
I just can't take him out.
Because my head is hurting so bad or I fear that if we get out there and the other kids start screaming, the headache's going to come on.
I've had to cancel plans.
And my biggest thing is I'm not as interactive as a mother as I was and would like to be.
I'm hearing a lot of things around parenting and concerns about it.
You mentioned that earlier as well.
But also guilt that goes with that.
Oh, definitely.
But I want to focus on you for a little bit.
Okay.
When are your headaches their worst?
They get worse in the evenings.
It's like a domino effect, usually around 8 or 9 p.m.
So let's get to the truth about your headaches.
Okay.
And with symptoms like that, the first...
The thing I want to know is how often do they really happen?
You mentioned them sort of here and there, and they seem like they're constant, but I actually wanted to get some numbers.
So you were kind enough to keep track of them for us.
You mapped them out.
Yeah.
And I put them up here on the screen so everyone else can see them as well.
You're having these headaches almost every day of the month, but certainly more than 15 days a month.
Oh, definitely.
You agree?
That's sort of the definition of a chronic headache, if it affects you roughly every other day of the month for three months.
So you're in a very clear category.
And the question becomes, what's leading to that?
And there's some easy things to fix that can cause chronic headaches and some that are more challenging.
So then I start thinking, well, what common problem could lead to chronic headaches?
And so I turn to medications.
And I'm curious what you do when you have the headaches.
How do you treat yourself?
I take over-the-counter medications maybe 30 a week if, you know, depending on...
30 a week.
Yeah, like I'll take two to three Tylenol, two to three times, maybe four to five times a week.
So let's put that up there, because that's very concerning to me, to take 30 pain relievers in a week.
You're doing that for a couple months, a couple years?
Probably a couple months.
So what you probably don't realize, what a lot of people don't recognize, is that actually taking the pain medications...
They can also cause headaches.
They can make your headaches worse.
Oh, I never knew that.
I know it sounds crazy.
Why would you sell them for headaches if they can cause headaches?
Yeah.
When you use them a couple times, they're great.
When you use them constantly, that can cause major issues.
Okay.
Real big issues.
So I'm going to talk about that, but I first want to get at what I think is the ultimate root, what started it all in the beginning, which is the stress that you mentioned.
So join me if you don't mind.
I wrote on the chalkboard a couple common stressors.
And I tried to write them out in ways that might resonate with you and folks at home.
So if you don't mind, grab a little chalk here.
You can be the teacher for us.
Okay.
And just check off the ones.
Let's go through these that apply to you.
Common stressors.
This is definitely a big one.
You have no close family.
You're single now for nine months.
Yeah.
Difficult family life.
I don't really have a lot of family close to me.
Having a child, I would say.
It's not having a child, but just being a single mom and things like that.
Losing my job is definitely one.
Being a single mom.
Being overweight, that definitely stresses me.
Issues with finance.
That's definitely hard with a son.
You're not getting sleep at all, you mentioned.
It's been a long time since you've gotten worse.
Being overextended, being a single mother, and trying to do everything with him.
And that leads to guilt at home.
Yeah, that definitely does.
So, interestingly, although you say you don't have a difficult family life, I would actually argue that just hearing you speak about it, I'm not saying that people are being difficult with you, but you sense difficulty and guilt almost.
Yeah, yeah, that's true.
So I would check that too.
So, do you think that your son is being emotionally affected by the headaches that are affecting his mother?
I do, especially at this age that he's at now.
There'll be times when I'll be sitting at night, and he'll want to play or want to do something, and I can't do it with him, and I start to cry.
And then he'll be like, don't cry, Mommy.
And that puts even more emotional stress on me, seeing him feel that way.
What would it mean to you if we took care of enough of this that you didn't have these chronic headaches?
It would be amazing.
It would mean that I could be the mother that I was and want to be the interactive mother that I was.
I could get back to work.
We're going to do that for you.
I've got the right person.
I invited a doctor who knows a lot about how to get rid of headaches.
She's over 35 years of experience.
Come join us.
Actually, I'll join.
I'm getting in the middle so I can get between you guys.
She's over 35 years of experience helping women free themselves of pain through natural and holistic medicine.
Dr. Teron Lodog.
Thank you very much.
A very bright woman.
I get advice from her all the time.
Why are there so many women like Brandy who are suffering from chronic headaches?
Well, you know, headaches are kind of a women's issue.
It affects us more than twice.
The number that it does men.
I think many of us are juggling a lot of things in our lives.
I think what's important to always keep in mind though is that there's an awful lot that we can do to help you.
So what makes your plan different from all the other ones out there?
Well, what you're doing right now is reacting to your headaches.
The headaches come and then you take pain medication.
I want to help her get in front of these headaches so that we wean you off your medication and then we create a plan to keep you from having to rely on pain medications when you do feel like you're having a headache.
That would be wonderful.
That's exactly what I would love that.
Alright everybody, when we come back, you get your natural plan to get rid of your headaches.
Stay with us.
Tell us, do you have your own secret remedy to get rid of migraines?
I've been dealing with them my entire life.
Unfortunately, the only solution that works for me is to sit in my bedroom in the dark until it subsides.

Thursday, May 7th.
That's coming up next week.
Knock a Low Dog has the natural plan to get rid of your headaches for good.
The first step of the plan is to keep a headache journal.
So what should be in the entries?
So if we're looking primarily for nutrition at this point, you want to make sure you document the time, when you eat, and if you're having any kind of head pain.
If you're having head pain, make sure you also rate the intensity so you can look over time and see if you're associating certain foods.
All right, so if I'm having a morning headache and I had scrambled eggs for breakfast, it's moderate pain, it could be caused.
It may be unrelated.
Cheese, sort of cheese ravioli even, at 3 to 4. Again, not terrible.
But they have a level 10 here late at night.
And that's maybe because of the meal.
We don't know, though, right?
You don't know.
And I think what's important here is you need it over a period of days to begin to look for any patterns.
There are certain foods that are really notorious.
Dairy products, chocolate, aged cheeses, wine, red wine.
But I see a number of things here that actually could be...
Making a headache worse.
Okay.
The next step on this plan is to address those over-the-counter medications.
Yeah.
It's just not working for some folks.
What do you do?
Well, I think one of the big things to remember is there is such a thing called medication-induced or medication overuse headaches.
What you want to do is if these are over-the-counter medications, you want to cut them in half for a week, then cut them in half, the dose, and cut them in half again the next week until you're off.
If you've been having headaches for years, Expect to take three to four weeks to get off your medications.
And if they're prescription medications, make sure you talk to your doctor first before just going off of them.
But they'll probably say the same thing to you.
Still to get them off.
But don't go cold turkey.
Right.
That's the big message.
Believe me, it's going to get much worse before it gets better if you do that.
You'd be very mad at us, okay?
Right, right.
The other thing we want to do is create a headache support kit.
This is really important to replace medications, to make up while you're dealing with the stresses and coping with all those things, as Brandy was showing us earlier, in order to get past those early headache withdrawals.
So what do you got for us?
Well, she definitely feels to me like somebody who could really benefit from magnesium.
Magnesium actually has a very strong recommendation from the Canadian Headache Society and also from the American Headache Society for relieving and preventing Headaches.
So a big one for her, 400 milligrams at night before bed.
And it might also help her sleep.
You can also get it from foods, obviously.
I love nuts.
They have a lot of magnesium, soy milks, a lot of leafy greens, spinach especially.
Get it naturally in your diet as well.
That way you don't have to always be catching up.
This is a big one.
And a lot of folks don't think about ginger tea, but I'd love to hear you expound on this.
You are an expert in the area.
So I love ginger.
Ginger has a long history of use for headaches and for relieving pain.
The dried is a little bit better than the fresh for headache pain, and you want to start it the minute you start to feel the headache.
I would also recommend for brandy just taking a little bit of ginger tea, you know, throughout the day.
Just having a cup in the afternoon, especially as you're weaning off your medications.
Don't underestimate the power of ginger.
Last up, and Brandon, come join us for this if you don't mind.
I'll give you a little present for you.
Peppermint is an aromatherapy as an oil.
Yes.
I mean, peppermint essential oil, you take...
This is not...
Peppermint essential oil is really a very concentrated form of peppermint.
And just smelling it can help relieve headaches.
But you may not know there were actually studies done that showed if you take just a drop of the peppermint oil...
And apply it to your temples.
I'll get underneath your glasses there.
And you sort of massage it into the temples.
I like to put it a little bit at the base of the neck, too.
There'll help with that part.
Yeah, there you go.
A massage from Dr. Oz.
If you do this and you take your ginger at the first sign that you're getting the headache.
I almost guarantee, within a short period of time, you'll start aborting those headaches.
And if you do your nutrition journal, we get you sleeping better, getting you some stress management.
I think you're going to be feeling a lot better pretty quickly.
Definitely.
I hope it helps you.
We'll be here to support you as well.
Thank you so much.
Good luck to you.
Dr. Lodog, thanks very much.

All new Oz.
That's coming up on Monday.
I thoroughly enjoyed having Yvette Nicole Brown here today, and she stuck around for an extra 30.
But before we get to it, I heard you had a very interesting Interesting question for us about your attire today.
Yeah, I wanted to know if I was supposed to dress for cuteness or for work, because sometimes you'll have people crawling through an esophagus.
I had to make sure.
I wasn't going to be in the liver somewhere, holding somebody's brain.
I wanted to make sure I had on something I could be cute in.
I would have made you a colon.
You would have made me a colon to crawl through?
I'd be a great colon crawler.
Alright, so you've got something that you're obsessed by, I understand, that might be wonderful for our audience.
Yes, this is my new favorite thing.
It's exfoliating beads, and they can turn any cleanser into an exfoliator.
So whatever cleanser you have, whether it has the beads already, this adds them.
So you just pump a little bit of your, give me your little hand.
Can I be the guinea pig?
Yeah, guinea pig.
So you put a little bit of your cleanser, and then you just get some of the beads and mix them in with water, and it turns into an exfoliant.
So, like, if you have your favorite cleanser already and you love it and you need an exfoliator, you just add the beads and you've got an instant exfoliator.
It's great.
And I think you can use it for your body, too.
So it's for your face, your body.
You should use it for your body.
Yeah, so it's really great.
It's a simple idea.
I love ideas.
It's great.
Everyone can apply.
That's right.
Is it expensive?
Define expensive.
No, it's not expensive.
It's not expensive.
And a couple of different brands make them.
We used one particular brand, but a couple of brands make them.
I love having you here.
Take care.
Bye, I bet.
All right, now it's time for a case of this.
First, my team and I have gone undercover to expose the online weight loss supplement scams that are taking you and your health for a ride.
Make sure you're getting legitimate supplements.
You want to avoid supplements with extreme claims.
For example, this is an ad I just saw for a pill that claims to get rid of wrinkles, which is hard to do.
It says, a natural pill that erases age.
Also notice you want to avoid supplements being sold that have my picture on the webpage like you just saw.
I don't endorse any products, so that's a red flag.
Next, we talked about chronic headaches today.
So if you suffer from headaches and find yourself taking over-the-counter medications at least half the days each month, you might be actually suffering from something called rebound headaches.
The pill, crazily, might be actually making your headaches worse.
And when you overuse the medications, it doesn't get better, it gets worse.
So I don't want you to stop taking these things cold turkey.
Instead, each week, cut the number of pills you're taking in half until you're down to none.
Now, while tapering yourself off these medications, or if we're going to avoid the headaches to begin with, Try using this support kit to soothe your headaches.
First, you got to make sure you get enough magnesium in your diet.
Then you want to use peppermint oil and keep it with you at all times.
When you feel a headache coming on, just massaging this on to your temples, the back of your neck, can provide a little bit of relief.
My favorite, though, that you probably haven't heard of, is to drink ginger.
And I'll throw chamomile tea in there as well.
But the hero here really is ginger.
These soothing beverages can help relax you, provide relief from your headache.
So you might as well use them together if you can use one at all and get some benefit from it.
These are good ideas.
Pay attention to them.
