Time Text
Solve your sleep problems tonight.
Today on Oz.
What is the most practical advice you've found that works for a busy mom?
The secret weapon to get a good night's rest.
It's not a pill, and it costs less than a dollar.
Plus, it's the fish Americans eat most.
But is mercury in your tuna making you sick?
Let me teach you a little bit about canned tuna.
See the safest kind to protect your health.
Coming up next on Dr. Oz.
Today, a whole new approach to solve your sleep problems.
I've enlisted the worst insomniacs.
They include a former Navy SEAL, a busy working mom, and a newspaper reporter.
They've all conquered their sleep struggles.
Now, they're spilling their secrets so you can finally get to sleep tonight.
First, I want you to meet a former Navy SEAL turned medical doctor who overcame many years of sleepless nights.
Dr. Kirk Parsley spent his 20s in the U.S. military as a Navy SEAL. He was at the peak of physical fitness.
Then he got into medical school, and that's when his problem with sleep began.
Surviving on only 4 to 5 hours of sleep a night, his hair started to fall out.
He gained weight, and his blood pressure shot up 20 points.
He needed to heal, so he dove deep into researching a connection between nutrition, exercise, and sleep.
He found one.
Putting his research into practice, Dr. Parsley saw drastic changes.
In fact, he soon found himself back on a military base, training soldiers on how to sleep better.
Dr. Parsley's here.
So what's the secret link between nutrition and our sleep?
Well, when we talk about nutrition and sleep, we're really talking about two things.
One is blood glucose, or your blood sugar levels, and the other one is inflammation.
If we eat foods that cause inflammation in our gut, these cause hormonal shifts, which ironically cause our blood sugar to go up and down and up and down.
And what I find is that people who have a difficulty keeping their blood sugar nice and level...
Throughout the day and throughout the night, they tend to have a difficult time sleeping as well.
And let me explain what Dr. Parsey's saying.
You know, this bad boy sugar, it's in so many things.
It's ruining our lives in so many ways, but it causes ups and downs, swings, making you restless in your sleep.
When the blood sugar stabilizes out, flattens out, you'll be able to have that restored, restful sleep we all crave.
So here's the big question.
How do you know if you're one of those people with the blood sugar going up and down, or if you're actually having sleep problems or something else?
Give us a clue.
Well, your audience can probably help me with the blood sugar.
Can I get people to raise your hands if you feel like you're doing everything right, you're exercising, you're eating well, but you have a little bit of weight right around the midsection here, maybe a little around the love handles.
Keep your hands up.
Also, if you feel like you have a lot of carbohydrate cravings, you really want starchy carbohydrate foods during the day, keep your hands up as well.
And if...
Keep your hands up now.
Now finally...
It's a workout guy.
Finally!
This is part of the workout.
Finally, keep your hands up if...
You feel like you've tried every kind of good diet there is.
You eat well and then the carbohydrate cravings overcome you and you fall off and then you gain a little more than you lost and then it comes up and down and up and down.
Anybody familiar to anybody?
Yes.
These things, all of these are symptoms that are associated with blood sugar control.
And what I've found is that people who maintain a good diet and they get rid of those blood sugar up and downs, they get a better night's sleep.
So you've got a plan.
This is an important one, an eat-to-sleep plan to help balance those blood sugars.
So if you're in any of those categories, Dr. Parsons just outlined for you, pay attention.
If this is a plan, I think it could work for sleeping problems.
Anyone else you recommend it for?
Anybody wants to be healthy.
It works for just about everything.
But the first thing that you'll notice is that there's not a lot of white on these plates.
You have a lot of colors.
You have a lot of rich greens.
You have your greens with every meal.
These are what we call low glycemic, right?
So they don't cause your blood sugar to shoot up really quickly.
They're nice and steady, right?
So some people call these slow carbohydrates.
We want lots of slow carbohydrates.
We balance that out with some protein, adequate protein.
Thank you very much.
Next, I want you to meet a doctor who thought she knew everything about sleep until she became a mom.
Psychologist Janet Kennedy devoted her life to studying sleep at world-renowned medical facilities.
She thought she knew everything on the subject.
Then, she had a baby.
And then another.
For the first time in her life, the sleep doctor herself became sleep deprived.
Diving back into research, Dr. Kennedy found most sleep advice to be contradictory and confusing.
So, she came up with a new approach to help even the busiest moms get back to bed.
Dr. Kennedy describes herself as a realist when it comes to sleep.
So, can I apply your advice to another busy mom?
Sure.
Lori's joining us.
She lays in bed, she says, for two hours every night, like so many of you, because she can't sleep.
So, I want you to give me six reasons why you can't sleep.
Just six.
Six.
My children.
I have six of those.
Your children?
Oh, boy.
Is that right?
So children could be whatever number between 1 and 10, I guess.
But do you find your mind racing thinking about them and other things during the day?
My mind races about their school schedules, their driving.
Four of them drive ages 8 to 23. So I'm just busy.
I am tense, and I can't sleep.
So, Doctor, take it away.
What's a secret weapon that might help Lori?
No pills allowed, because we take too many already.
And I want it to be cheap.
Well, first of all, you need a 15-minute wind-down routine.
Something quick and easy and something to take your mind away from those worries so that you're not having a stressful experience of trying to fall asleep.
That, for me, is often reading fiction.
I find that it takes me to another place and it takes my mind away from that hamster wheel of racing thoughts.
And then, if you use a handy tennis ball to work out the tension like this, to work out the tension that accumulates in your body, And using a tennis ball to roll out those muscles can really make a difference.
I built you a wall, Laurie.
Think of this as the obstacle.
Go ahead and demonstrate.
All right.
So show me where in your upper back you feel it.
So right here about?
Yes.
So lean back.
And I'm going to put it a little bit lower.
Now bend your knees and use the pressure to move that ball around.
See how that feels?
Yeah, it actually feels...
Quite good.
Mm-hmm.
So all you need is a wall and a tennis ball.
Can you arrange that?
I can get a tennis ball.
My son has many.
And really getting that tension out as a habit, you know, it takes just a couple of minutes.
And really giving yourself that couple of minutes to relieve that tension can do wonders for improving your sleep.
Keep working on Lori's back.
Wonderful.
Next, a newspaper reporter's mission to find the truth about what's keeping him up at night.
Reuters senior reporter David Randall has had trouble sleeping most of his adult life.
One particularly bad night, he ended up sleepwalking down his hallway, crashing into a wall.
He woke up in pain on the floor.
That moment inspired David to learn everything he could about the science of sleep.
He put on his reporter's hat to interview sleep specialists all across the country.
And the secrets he's found to a good night's sleep go all the way back to primitive men.
Dave is joining us.
He looks at sleep from a very unique perspective.
You actually have combed through history and identified a huge misconception we have about sleep, the most fundamental thing we could do.
There's the biggest thing is the light bulb.
You know, we were built for a world where there were no light bulbs.
You know, 150 years ago, we slept in a completely different way.
You would fall asleep, the first sleep, then you'd wake up for about an hour in the middle of the night, you'd stay awake, it was completely normal, you expected it, and then you'd fall back asleep, and that was called the second sleep.
And if you look throughout history, you see the Canterbury Tales, throughout that, you always see these references to it.
What changed us when we see light bulbs, our brains see that as sunlight.
So it's a very subtle trigger to say, stay awake longer, stay awake longer, stay awake longer.
So if you think about this, and I'm surprised they actually had names for it, the first sleep and the second sleep.
How do you apply that to the problem we have in America?
Because you can't get rid of the light bulbs.
Exactly.
So what we can do is say, you know what, I can outsmart my body.
So one big thing is temperature.
So what helps you fall asleep is your body temperature falling.
And your mattress probably keeps and traps a lot of your heat.
Your body dissipates heat as you fall asleep, but if you have your foot in it, in the covers, or you have something else, it's going to be hard for that heat to go away.
So how about I show you?
Yeah, analyze the bed.
I'll be the victim.
I'm lying in bed.
So here's some hot spots.
So one big one is the covers, obviously.
So you get stuck in there, your heat's just going to trap.
And then if you have a sleep partner, that's another big source of heat.
So I'm going to put that there for you and right here for you, too.
I gravitate to that heat.
Exactly.
So some people, you know, people like it in a different way.
Obviously, I wouldn't be on top of the covers.
Normally, I'd be under here.
Yeah, exactly.
So if I get my little...
What do you do if you're home right now and you got a piece of coal like me next to you or you're under hot covers?
So what you do is that you have these hot spots.
What you want is for a way to let heat come out.
So one thing you can do is take your foot out from over here.
Take it out?
Yeah, take it out under the covers, let it out, because so much of your body heat is going to come out from the soles of your feet.
So that'll allow the heat from your body.
To release and let your body temperature fall.
The same thing you can do with your hands.
Make sure your hands are outside of the covers as well.
It lets your body heat come out and lets you fall asleep.
Only a reporter could figure this out.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.
Nice research.
You can find my insomniacs guide to finally get to sleep tonight on drraz.com.
I'll be right back.
Coming up, it's the fish Americans eat most.
But should you be worried about mercury in your tuna?
High levels can cause mood swings, irritability, insomnia.
Find out which packaged tuna is the safest to protect your health.
Coming up next.
All new Oz, Paula Deen loves butter.
So good!
But it's her battle with diabetes she's talking about.
How she lost 35 pounds.
All new Oz.
That's coming up on Monday.
Earlier this season, I revealed a personal health crisis.
Alarmingly high levels of mercury in my blood.
Since then, one of the most common questions I get asked is, should I worry about mercury in tuna?
There's my Facebook feed.
You'll see all the questions that come up over and over.
And the answer very clearly to everybody is yes.
Now, here's why.
Tuna can contain high levels of mercury.
That's what I had high levels of myself.
It happens to be...
The most common fish that Americans eat.
And high mercury levels can cause a bunch of things.
It can cause mood swings and irritability.
My wife says I have this already, but the mercury might be involved.
It can cause insomnia and weakness.
Again, these are very common symptoms.
You're not going to know for sure if the mercury is causing this, but if you've got these issues, you should be thinking about it.
It can also, when there are higher amounts of mercury in your blood, cause vision and memory impairment.
Again, things that a lot of folks are complaining about.
So today, I'm revealing the safest way to eat packaged tuna and protect your health.
Shantae posted this question on my Facebook page.
She said, do we need to worry about the kind of tuna found in cans, jars, etc.?
Shantae's joining me now.
So why'd you post this?
What's concerning to you about tuna and how it's packaged?
Um, Dr. Oz, I eat so much tuna.
So I just want to know which one's actually healthy.
Because if you can get the lower mercury kind, why not?
First question, is there a difference in levels of mercury in tuna?
I think there is.
Come on over here.
I'm going to show you why.
It's important to pick out the ones that have the lowest amount of mercury.
I'm going to give you some very simple ways of knowing this going forward.
Rule of thumb, the larger the tuna, the more mercury, right?
Because where did the fish get the mercury from?
By eating smaller fish.
So the big fish, they eat the smaller fish, so they always have more mercury in them, pretty much.
So big eye is one of the largest species of tuna out there, has the highest amount of mercury for that reason.
Next is something called yellowfin tuna.
You'll see this sometimes.
I'm going to show you how these are packaged because they tend to be packaged in certain ways.
A little bit smaller than the big eye.
For that reason, it has a little bit less mercury.
But it's still a significant amount because it's not a small fish.
Albacore tuna is the next size.
You can see they're getting smaller as they go along.
Again, a little less mercury, but still more than the skipjack, which is the smallest of the tunas that we generally eat.
It has the least amount of mercury.
If you can have a choice, you're always going to eat the skipjack types of tuna versus the big eye and across the board that becomes a guiding principle.
So how much tuna do you think you eat a week?
Oh my gosh, Dr. Oz, probably like four to five times a week.
Four to five times?
Yes.
And as your Facebook question was noting, you eat it frozen in jars and cans.
What's the way you usually eat it?
Actually, all the above.
All the above?
But I try to go towards the jar tuna.
Why the jar?
A little more gourmet.
I feel like it's more healthier.
A little fancier.
Yeah, exactly.
I like that fancier.
Let's go through the packaging.
Come over here.
Let me start with frozen, because it's a fairly common way folks get it.
Here's what you've got to know about frozen tuna.
Again, fish in general is good for you.
I'm just worried about getting too much of the kind that has mercury in it.
And unfortunately, frozen sources of tuna...
Have a fair amount of mercury because they're made from larger fish.
The big guy I showed over there, that's the most common way you'll freeze tuna, and that's how you'll find it frozen.
And remember, freezing the tuna doesn't change the mercury level at all.
It has no benefit.
In fact, heating it up doesn't benefit you either.
You just got to buy something that doesn't have much in there.
So to be safe, you want to limit the amount of frozen tuna you have to two times, listen carefully, a month.
Twice a month.
You can have it, it just can't be that common.
Let's move on to the jar.
You call it the fancy.
The fancy fish.
The fancy fish.
So folks buy the fancy jar stuff for a reason.
And there are good reasons for it.
And some people do like the presentation a bit more.
It's usually made from yellowfin tuna.
So it's better than freezing.
But actually it's not as good as canned for a lot of folks.
Because it still has a fair amount of mercury.
So general rule of thumb, a six ounce jar.
You probably want to get one of those a week and not much more.
Okay.
But you like more than that, don't you?
Yeah, I do.
So, let's go over here to the canned stuff because you're going to be down.
You'll be shopping in this part of the aisle from now on, eating five times a week.
So, at any given time, if I were to go through your cupboards, how many of these cans would I find in there?
You will be impressed because I have a whole shelf full.
Oh, your own little shelf.
Yes, it's like 15 or 20. So, this is like my go-to, my savior.
So, let me go through a couple of stuff.
When you're buying the canned Tuna.
How do you decide which variety to get?
How do you decide, for example, if you're going to get white or light?
What do you look for?
Just really the cost of it all.
The lowest price is the best one for you?
Exactly.
So you can still find inexpensive, because this is not a cost-related issue specifically, but you've got to buy the right kind.
So let me teach you a little bit about canned tuna.
There's chunk white and there's chunk light.
Why is there a difference?
The chunk white is actually made of the albacore tuna.
That's the tuna fish that's third in size.
Right?
So, if you think about it, it's going to have less mercury than the other fish, but not as good as the ideal, which is the skipjack tuna.
Skipjack tuna is in the chunk light, so you want to get the light stuff, not the white stuff.
Generally speaking, across the board, I say with canned tuna fish, you probably want to get it twice a week and not much more, but you can cheat a little bit more if it's the chunk light.
Okay.
Now, the question is, are you going to act on this?
Did I confuse you?
Does it make sense?
No, I feel like I just need to use everything I have in my...
On my shelf.
And then shop right.
And then shop right.
Okay.
Tell you what, I'll make that deal with everyone, not just you, but everyone across America.
Finish what's on your shelf, because I still prefer you have the fish.
Yeah.
But then when you go to the shopping next time, I want you to look at the label.
I sent my tea mouth this week, and they were able to find the names of those fish on the cans.
You'll see them written right there.
Oh.
But if you don't remember all that, think, I want to be light.
I want to fly.
I don't want to be white.
I want to fly.
Be light.
All right?
So you buy chunk light tuna, and you're good to go.
Okay.
Thanks very much.
Thank you.
We'll be right back.
Coming up next, do you feel like your health is too far gone to make a change?
Are you feeling like you're at a point of no return?
Chris Powell is here to change how you think and how to push past the excuses.
The most inspiring health transformations.
Next.
Many of you at home feel like you're at a point of no return.
Your health is too far gone to have the kinds of transformations we talk about on this show.
Well, you're about to meet people who used to think that way, but they turned it all around.
The health transformations may just be the inspiration you need to start yours.
So first, let's meet one of the biggest names in fitness who helped people get the most extreme transformations possible, Chris Powell.
I love having you on the show.
Thank you so much.
I love if you could address this.
Do you ever feel that someone may have gone too far so that a transformation is not possible?
They can't really make a meaningful change anymore.
That's not possible.
I know in my heart of hearts that we're all capable of doing extraordinary things, and that's why I do what I do, to show anybody and everybody that, hey, we're capable of doing this.
Anybody can do it.
We can all do it.
We can, and I believe it.
In every ounce of my being, I do.
I always say so critically, because we show up in our own lives.
We give a chance to ourselves to surprise ourselves.
So you've trained lots of people.
You've helped tons of folks change in ways never thought possible.
But there's one person who really has changed you quite a bit.
It's a very special guest, Georgiana.
I want to remind you, here's Georgiana before she started working with Chris.
Jojana, please come out on the set.
Oh my goodness!
Oh my...
Jojana, this is unbelievable!
Unbelievable!
Unbelievable!
I'll give you a hug.
Oh, thank you.
I'm a hugger.
That is so remarkable.
165 pounds you lost.
How are you even beginning to do that?
Before you even get to how you did it, what was your rock bottom when you finally realized you had to push past any excuses you might be able to make?
My big excuse always in my head was that I was kind of...
I was a super mom.
I was, you know, PTA mom.
I was decorating locker rooms.
I was going to volleyball matches.
I was working full time.
And my kids came first.
Everything else came first.
And so when my youngest daughter graduated from high school, my husband and I, we started our family young.
And we had always talked about when the kids graduate, we're still going to be young.
It's going to be so much fun.
We're going to travel.
We're going to do all this stuff.
And I found myself at that point in time and thinking.
This is not what it was supposed to be.
This was supposed to be fun, and I weigh 315 pounds, and there's nothing fun about this.
Chris, a lot of folks appropriately are sitting at home and saying, well, sure, if I had Chris Powell with me, I'd lose 165 pounds.
Anyone can do it with Chris Powell next to me.
What do you have to say to them?
You know, I hear that all the time, and the response is always the same.
I couldn't lose a pound for her, even if I wanted to.
And sometimes I wanted to, but at the same time, it's her journey.
All I could do is simply lay out the path.
But all she needed was just that little push and that little bit of belief, and that was it.
I am so proud of you.
Thank you so much.
So Chris, you're going to stick around.
You're going to come back a little bit later in the show.
Next, I want you to meet an entire family who's completely transformed their health in just a few months.
Do you remember the Stallman family?
Chasing the goats are so hard.
Well, they're back.
While following the plan Dr. Hyman and I gave them...
Eat protein.
Good fats and fiber, they have made some incredible transformations.
Hey Dr. Oz, it's Bridget.
I just wanted to update you on my progress.
I've lost 55 pounds now since August.
So far to date, I've lost 53.5 pounds.
As of right now, I've lost 51 pounds and I feel amazing.
I've lost 51 pounds with this detox diet.
I've lost 75 pounds on the detox diet.
I'm so excited because I have lost 50 pounds on this diet.
The most important thing is that we've really changed our lifestyle and we're really new people thanks to you.
I just want to say thank you for changing my life.
I can run around the basketball court like it's nothing to keep up with all of my friends.
I'm feeling great and just have a lot of fun.
My mom's going to be getting me some ballet shoes.
And I'm gonna be put in a ballet class.
I'm so excited that I will be achieving my goal.
So, bye!
She is so cute.
I'm so proud of the Stallmans.
Together, the Stallman family lost 335 pounds.
And they've significantly reduced their information levels, which is what I was most worried about.
I have watched this family take back control.
We can do this all over America.
We are doing it all over America.
Now, their secret was to have a support system.
This family's greatest success happened when they worked together and they supported one another.
That made it all happen.
So I'm going to get to one more incredible transformation story.
Do you remember Jerry?
Like most working moms, she struggled with juggling a full-time job and a hectic household of 15 kids.
Putting everybody else's needs before her own.
Unhappily overweight, she was finally ready to reclaim her life.
I have to take control of my health.
We introduced her to best-selling author and nutritionist Haley Pomeroy, who put her on The Real Woman's Guide to Weight Loss, a plan that has her eliminating sugars and fatty foods by making small changes to deal with the cravings while saving time and money.
What I want to do is teach you ways that can empower and enhance your metabolism.
Two weeks later, we sent Haley to check in on Jerry to give her more tips and help her get healthy once and for all.
You look amazing.
You look gorgeous.
Thank you.
11 pounds.
Yes!
Oh my God!
How does it feel to have just lost 11 pounds?
I definitely have more energy.
I'm eating so much more, but scale's moving.
That's a bonus.
What's the biggest struggle?
The part of the plan to eat every three to four hours.
And especially if I'm at work, I miss that mark.
To help Jerry stay on track...
Haley's first step was to make her an efficient and cost-effective healthy shopper.
One thing that I do is I always do a kitchen inventory before I go to the grocery store.
I just can't afford to waste.
Exactly.
On any level, but financially for sure.
I look for what's on sale and I kind of create food around it.
So you want to grab some eggplants, since you like eggplants.
It's a fairly large item for a really good price.
Then it was time to go back home and start cooking.
Haley's secret plan?
Get Jerry's kids involved.
So that they're spending quality time together and getting healthy.
So a quick trick that I do is anytime I take the time to make dinner, I always make two meals at once.
And the way I do this is I have a slow cooker right next to me because as I chop things up, I'm just going to add them to that at the same time.
I still am in awe that I can eat like I do and share with my family.
Amazing.
Mary Pomeroy and Jerry are both here.
I gotta congratulate you.
44 pounds.
44 pounds.
But what I really want to celebrate is not the weight, because I was pretty confident with you working with Haley that would happen.
It's what happened on your insides.
Now, when you were here last, we were very worried about your cholesterol.
Yes.
And we all have cholesterol issues in this country when we put weight on, in general.
And yours were particularly severe.
Your healthy, good cholesterol, the one that we want more than 60, ideally in women, yours is 24. I don't really have a pill I can give you for that.
No one does.
With this program, and I've never ever seen this kind of a change before, it's 82. And you checked the record, right?
Yeah.
That was five weeks, Dr. Oz.
That was in only five weeks.
Let me give you the LDL number, because I do want to ask you about this.
The LDL cholesterol, the lousy cholesterol, beforehand was 230. You went in under 100, ideally.
And yours?
79 now.
79. A life-saving number is going to keep you around for your 15 kids.
But I've got to say, what did Jerry's doctor say about this?
I mean, our medical unit team looked at this.
They were disbelieving as I am.
Well, I called the doctor after five weeks of working together.
And it was all about getting Jerry's family involved and falling in love with food.
And when I called him at five weeks, he said, Haley, it's too soon.
We're just not going to see a change.
I begged and I pleaded.
And then afterwards, he was in shock.
And I said, this is what happens when you repair the why it's become difficult to lose weight.
So I like to repair the why.
And we see our chemistry is now stable.
Therefore, the weight loss becomes easy.
I'm proud of both of you.
Thank you very much.
Thanks for all you've done.
Next, we're going behind the scenes with Chris.
We're going to see how he really inspires people to get the most extreme results.
You can see more footage from Extreme Weight Loss on AGC.com.
I'll be right back.
Next, has your body adapted to your dieting routine?
Your metabolism slowed down and your weight loss stopped.
Chris Powell has easy strategies to help trick your body to burn fat.
The plan to push through a plateau and reach your goal.
Next.
All new odds.
Holiday.
So good!
But it's her battle with diabetes she's talking about.
How she lost 35 pounds.
All new Oz.
That's coming up on Monday.
Go ask Chris to stick around.
Because today we're talking about health transformations.
And sometimes during that long, arduous journey, we hit roadblocks and plateaus.
Now I want you to remember, think back about newly engaged couple Ron and Angela.
This is what's happening to them.
We're going to take our cameras behind the scenes and follow Ron and Angela.
They left our show and they went to Chris.
Take a look.
Remember Ron and Angela?
Engaged and eager to lose weight for their July wedding.
I know what dress I want.
I know I would look fabulous in it if I lost some weight.
When we get married, one of the things we've talked about is kids.
I want to be able to do things with my kids.
So we called in extreme weight loss trainers Chris and Heidi Powell to help.
We need to get you lean and mean to get into that tux by July 18th and you gotta be sexy in that wedding dress.
After the show, Ron and Angela began losing weight.
But not fast enough to make their wedding.
Since being on the show, so far I've lost almost 10 pounds.
And I've lost about 15 pounds.
So he sent them to Destination Boot Camp with Chris and Heidi.
You guys ready?
Yes!
Let's go!
They've been following the nutrition program, and they're losing weight, but at the same time, they're not losing at the same rate that we need to get them there.
So it's time to accelerate everything.
Time for us to throw some exercise into the mix.
Go!
There you go.
That's it.
Make those rubs dance.
20 seconds.
Come on, Angela.
That looks too easy for you.
All right, Lon.
Five, two, three.
Do not stop.
There you go.
What's the voice in your head saying right now?
Saying, I don't know if I can do this.
Honestly.
It was the hardest thing I've done in 12 years.
If one of us fails, it's going to be very easy for the other one of us to fail.
Yes, you can!
One more.
Angela burpees.
Ten burpees for Angela.
You dropped the weight.
How does it feel?
How do you feel watching her do that?
I just hate myself right now.
I hate seeing her suffer.
I hate seeing her in pain.
Ron needed that moment of clarity.
He broke down crying because he realized what he's done to himself.
But, of course, he's grown over 400 pounds.
He just let himself go.
This is not just a diet.
This is not something temporary.
This is a lifestyle change.
It's not going to be easy, but we're going to get there.
Good job, baby.
It's an unbelievable story.
Chris actually called us when he felt Ron and Angela had hit a plateau.
So what was worrying you?
Well, you know, I mean, they were doing so well.
In fact, I mean, to date, Ron has lost almost 46 pounds, and Angela's lost 31. That's a lot.
So they're doing well, but over the last few weeks, things started slowing down a little bit.
So this is a plan to push through the plateau.
Let's show them this plan with a twist.
All right.
We're going to break this down so everyone can do exactly what they need to do in order to get through these days.
We're going to start off with fat-burning days.
These are low-carb days.
Yes.
Folks, some of these things, you've probably heard words that sound like this.
I want you to get the details, because the devil's in the details.
So a low-carb day.
Walk us through what it means.
Right.
So this is the low carb day right here.
And these are the days when we pull those carbohydrates out, our body goes into more of a catabolic state as long as we're at a calorie deficit.
So that means that our body is mobilizing and oxidizing fat.
That's what we want to do.
So this is a really good thing.
These are the days that we're actually maximizing our fat burn.
So we start off with a little bit of natural, whole, healthy carbohydrates that are high in fire.
We've got tortillas here, and we have egg white tacos with a little bit of cheese.
Great way to start off the breakfast.
We use carbohydrates that kind of stoke up that metabolism.
But then we pull the carbs out.
We've got a protein shake here with a tablespoon of peanut butter, which is wonderful, healthy fats.
Here we've got chicken cutlets and a nice little salad mix.
We've got some olive oil on there.
Once again, wonderful, healthy fats.
We've got some Greek yogurt here with some pecans.
Once again some incredible healthy fats, pecans, almonds, walnuts, amazing healthy nuts.
And now we've got some steak cutlets here with some chopped peppers and onions, and we've got a little balsamic vinaigrette combo here.
So you see, there's a little bit of carbs in breakfast, stoke that metabolism, then we pull it out and we just burn, burn, burn all day long.
Now, what we've done with Ron and Angela is that we've done two of these days back to back.
So this would be like Monday and Tuesday that we're doing this because we want those two low-carb days to maximize fat burn.
Alright, then the second thing we want to do is a metabolism boosting.
Yes, absolutely.
So keep in mind, low-carb diets, they work.
They really do.
You get incredible results.
But the thing is that you just can't do them for a long period of time because it slows the metabolism down.
So we'll do two of those low-carb days, focusing on fat burn, and here comes Wednesday.
Now, all of a sudden, now we're going to start eating some...
Healthy carbohydrates.
So we've got some, you know, this is great.
This is a whole grain English muffin with some egg whites on it with a little egg muffin sandwich.
We've got some chicken breasts here with some couscous.
What kind of shake is this?
So this is a chocolate protein shake.
These protein shakes are pretty amazing.
So we go two low, one high with a boost.
So we go two low burning fat, one high boosting metabolism.
So that's six days of the week.
That's the six days of the week, so?
The seventh day.
And on the seventh day...
There was a reward.
Yes.
A big reward.
He rewarded himself.
Exactly.
Explain how you're going to get through this.
So it's important that you can reward yourself.
You can indulge a little bit on the seventh day, but in a little bit of moderation.
You don't want to go overboard, but definitely you want to have some fun.
You know, I am so happy.
I really am.
We're done with you.
Thank you, Doc.
Well done, and I love the transformation of the wonderful people we trust you with.
You can find ways to pull this plan off into your life and push to a plateau in Chris's book, Choose More, Lose More for Life.
We'll be right back.
Next, does your body suffer from chronic health issues?
Maybe you need to break your addiction to sugar and carbs.
Learn to be healthy and free of toxins with recipes that are easy to make and taste amazing.
How to cook your way to a cleaner body in just 10 days.
Coming up.
He's the best-selling author behind the 10-Day Detox Diet Plan and the man who took the family, this family, the Stallman family, who were on the show this season, they went from this...
To this.
Dr. Mark Hyman helped the Stalmans lose 335 pounds and counting in just a few months and he's here to help you too with his new 10-day detox diet cookbook.
Welcome back.
Thank you for having me.
How did you do it with the Stalmans?
This is a family that was completely disconnected from food.
Absolutely.
You know, they were biologically addicted to sugar, refined carbs, processed food.
They had their taste buds, their metabolism, and their brain chemistry hijacked by the food industry, and they literally had outsourced their cooking to corporations.
So we had them take out the bad stuff, put in the good stuff, taught them how to take back their health by taking back their kitchens, taught them to cook using powerful anti-inflammatory detoxifying foods that boost their metabolism.
And in three weeks, the first three weeks, they lost 100 pounds, and their blood sugar went from pre-diabetic and diabetic.
To normal.
So we ate ourselves into this mess.
We've got to cook our way out of it.
Big, big differences.
All right, let's get started.
Catherine's been on your plan.
She's lost 54 pounds.
Welcome, Catherine.
Congratulations.
Oh, thank you very much.
Hi.
Hi.
How are you?
Thank you.
Since you lost all this weight on the 10-day detox and the subsequent use of it, I'm going to have you be the sous chef today.
Sounds great.
That's why I don't get dirty.
Excellent.
So I'm going to walk you all through this.
I think Hyman's plan is superb, but I want to hear from someone who's been on it.
Why do you like it?
Well, first of all, losing the weight is great, but the most important thing to me is the ability to be around food and just be able to eat what I want.
So your cravings have went away.
My cravings are completely gone.
It's really stunning.
All right, so Dr. Hyman is going to make us one of his favorite detox meals.
Yes.
What are you going to make?
Explain it to us.
And I want to get the same results.
Not just the weight loss, but the loss of cravings, the ease of it is what's surprising.
It's exactly right.
It's easy.
It's delicious.
The key here thing is, as you mentioned, food isn't just about calories.
It's about...
It's literally healing ingredients that can transform your biology with every single bite.
So that's what all these things are here.
These are not just delicious-tasting, amazing foods, but they're nice medicines that boost your metabolism.
Like sumac is one of the new superfoods.
It's powerful anti-inflammatory used for treating type 2 diabetes.
This is Ras Al Hanout, which is a Middle Eastern spice full of cinnamon and coriander ginger anti-inflammatory.
Say it again, Ras Al Hanout.
I'm not Middle Eastern, but it's close enough.
You should be able to do that, Dr. Oz.
So you mix all those together?
You're from the Middle East, sort of.
And then you mix all these together in a little bit of a container here.
You mix it all in.
And you get a nice spice mixture with lemon zest and salt and spices.
And then you put it on the chicken.
You mix all the chicken and you get it all put together.
And this is just boneless, skinless breast?
That's right.
Boneless, skinless breast, pounded down nice and thin.
Coat it nice and easily on the thing.
It's so easy.
Cooking is fun.
It's easy.
You get to connect with your food.
Notice, by the way, the appropriate way of doing it, Dr. Hyman's salmonella.
Yeah, that's right.
I'm full of salmonella.
You don't want to shake my hand after this.
Yeah.
All right.
All right, so we made it again using herbs that have the benefit that we've described.
Step two is to cook it, obviously.
Right.
Cut it up, and then we have a dressing.
And we have a delicious dressing.
The dressing also has medicinal components.
Garlic is a powerful anti-inflammatory and immune booster, as we know.
But tahini is full of amazing fats.
And the fats in tahini, actually what they do is they help you to boost your metabolism.
They cut your hunger, so you're not hungry all the time.
And they kick in fat.
Burning.
So we think fat's bad, but actually part of the 10-day detox diet includes all sorts of good fats that literally speed up your metabolism, and the key for cutting rid of hunger is actually getting enough fats in your diet.
And then you need this little tricky thing.
I'm going to put the salt, the garlic, put the whole thing, the whole thing, and then this is a fun thing.
I'm going to step behind you.
Go ahead.
You go.
Well, I'm behind you.
Yeah, thanks.
Use me as a shield.
What could go wrong?
Great.
We'll find out.
Look at me, cooking with these two.
How fun.
Dr. Eisenhower and I cook a lot.
I broke it.
Okay.
There we go.
Don't mess up my hair.
Forget the 59 pounds.
No one cares about the 59 pounds.
And then you slice the chicken nice and thin.
And I guess it's cooked so my fingers aren't full of salmonella anymore.
But they were already on there.
Yeah, they were on the raw.
Don't eat them.
I'll get hate mail tonight about Dr. Hyman.
I'll defend you anyway, because I love you.
Is that some pre-made over there?
What are these other things you've got here?
These are all sorts of condiments that you put on the salad.
This is a radicchio chicory salad, and what it does is it has an inulin, which helps your gut bacteria actually form compounds that promote weight loss.
It's really great.
You sprinkle on the parsley, which is extra antioxidants, cilantro, which is detoxifying, a little bit of mint for flavor, and then you...
You put in a little bit of walnuts and pomegranates.
Just put some salmonella in there.
I didn't touch it.
I didn't touch it.
And you mix it with sticks, not your fingers, right?
Not my fingers.
And you put it on the plate, and you plate these things up.
And you take a little chicken, and you put it on top.
So you've got this beautiful chicken Middle Eastern salad with all sorts of powerful ingredients.
And you put this sauce on top, and you've got a delicious...
Yummy.
And it takes nothing to make.
Very quick.
Can I taste it?
This is actually cooked?
That is cooked, yes.
And you know what's amazing what the Stallman said was that when they actually did this, they thought it was going to be more expensive but to eat real food, but it was actually cheaper and it was easier.
Because you're eating at home more.
And they cut out their, you know, case of soda they were having every week, so they actually saved money by eating real food.
Right.
This is delicious.
I think it's fantastic.
It's really good.
All right, so let's go talk to the audience.
They have some samples.
I love it.
Can I come with you guys?
These are the salmonella-free ones, right?
Yes, the salmonella-free ones.
Bring it along.
We can pass that up.
The few people who won't get sick will eat these ones.
All right, so, please come over here.
I have a group of ladies here who actually bid on Dr. Hyman's 10-day detox plan.
I want some honest thoughts, both about the food we just made you, but how it has worked.
So, how are you?
What's your first name?
Francine.
I need a mic.
One second.
Here.
Thank you, Francine.
Thank you.
How much weight did you lose?
I lost 12 pounds.
Good for you.
Was it easy to do?
It was.
No.
A month.
That's okay.
I don't want you, frankly, losing 12 pounds in 10 days.
Doing it in a month is a smarter way.
Go ahead and taste that.
It's delicious.
How was it for you?
It was a miracle.
In what way?
A miracle?
What happened?
Well, I was one of your beta testers.
Ah.
And I lost 41 pounds.
Oh, my God.
How much?
I recognize you.
41 pounds.
And how much time?
About six months.
That's great.
That's fantastic.
But your arthritis change and your mood change?
Everything.
Everything.
We talked earlier about cravings and how...
It was a little easier because you didn't have them anymore.
Was that true in your case, too?
It was definitely true.
Within like three days, all the cravings were gone.
I ended up losing four pounds, but most importantly, an inch around my waist, which was great.
And would you enjoy the salmonella-free version of this?
Definitely, definitely.
You're fantastic, Mark.
Thank you very much.
Everyone can try this recipe, and there are many more in the book you can try at home, because the entire audience is getting a copy of Dr. Hyman's 10-Day Detox Diet Pickbook.
We'll be right back.
All new Oz, Paula Deen loves butter.
So good!
But it's her battle with diabetes she's talking about.
How she lost 35 pounds.
All new Oz.
That's coming up on Monday.
No matter how it's like or should they feel, your bodies are always chugging along, growing, changing, and generally keeping you alive.
So, I made a little game for everyone today.
I'm calling it More or Less Than 10. It's a simple little game.
We'll explain it to Susie in a second.
It's going to be our contestant today.
I want to know how much you appreciate how incredible a machine your body is.
And because you're brave enough to come up here, I'm going to give you a little bit of the rules.
Then I'll turn you loose.
Are you ready?
Excellent.
Five questions.
Awesome.
I'm going to ask you, is the answer more or less than 10?
Okay.
Feel comfortable?
Absolutely.
More or less.
Got it.
You got it.
All right.
So here goes.
They start off easy.
They get a little harder.
Everyone can play along over the course of a year.
How many gallons of saliva will you produce?
More or less than 10?
More.
Audience, do you think?
More.
They agree.
The correct answer is a lot more.
91 gallons, in fact.
How'd you know that?
It's a lot of saliva.
Pretty smart.
All right.
You were pretty confident about that.
You are smart.
All right.
How many gallons of urine will you expel?
A little sensitive here.
More or less than 10 gallons in a year.
More.
That was easy when I was warming you up.
Way more.
135, way more.
My daughter, way more than that.
She's a...
All right.
I notice you're running away from me.
You're trying...
Oh, not at all.
No, I wouldn't run from you.
I'm just getting ready.
I'm getting all hot.
Now I'm getting ready.
Those are the warm-up rounds.
Okay, ready?
How many million times will your heart beat more or less than 10 million times?
More.
Ooh, pretty confident.
Correct answer is 35 million times.
She's three for three.
You did fantastic.
That's very good.
All right.
Finally, let me close with a warning.
I want you to be careful about what you buy online, especially weight loss pills.
There's some dubious people online that prey on folks like you who are trying to do the right things for your health.
Sometimes they make it seem like I'm endorsing the product that they're selling to you, but I don't.
