The holidays are over.
You've stressed, indulged, and have been running on empty.
And now it's time to reset and rebalance.
If we don't take the time to do this, symptoms get louder, and then diseases show up.
This is critical to do.
We have a personalized plan.
If you're not regular, you're nowhere.
That will jumpstart your energy from head to toe.
It's not more expensive.
It's not challenging.
It's just a matter of knowing.
Coming up next.
Y'all ready for season 10?
Yeah!
I love you, Becca!
I love you, Becca! Becca!
Today we're kicking off a week-long event of the ultimate reset and rebalance plan for your body from head to toe.
We've got the latest science to help you get your digestion in the right spot, clean it up, recharge your sleep, and reset your entire energy patterns.
So, let's start with a brand new energy quiz to pinpoint what's really causing your exhaustion and fatigue.
We're going to rebalance your energy plan with a personalized one that you can start today.
Joining me now, integrative medicine doctor Taz Bhatia and nutritionist J.J. Smith.
Dr. Taz, why do we all need a reset right now?
Dr. Oz, energy is one of our vital signs.
We need energy for so many different things in the body, like how we think, how we manage stress, and even our ability to move.
So we need an energy reset right now.
It's going to help us manage pain.
It's actually going to help us sleep better, and it's actually also going to help us manage stress.
So this is critical to do.
JJ, how is this quiz going to change how we look at energy itself?
Well, having great energy isn't always about getting enough sleep.
Right.
There are so many other factors that are determining our energy levels.
And so, like, what we're eating, what we're not eating.
But what I say is, once we learn to reset and rebalance, we'll be able to energize our body and get everything in tune again.
Exactly.
It's got to sound better.
Sounds better.
Let's start with the energy quiz.
Everyone keep track of your answers.
We're going to put the quiz online, as always.
JJ has the first question.
Well, they say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but if your doctor saw what you really ate, they would say you need to eat more of.
Is it A, nuts and seeds?
That's how we would say it.
Or is it B, fish?
Eat more of it.
Or is it C, beef, of course.
Keep track of which one you think you need.
Next question is for Dr. Taz.
Take it away.
So if you had a sleepy spirit animal, what would it be?
Perhaps it's A, tired polar bear.
I feel like I'm in the Arctic with these chills, even if I'm lying on my back.
B, an exhausted elephant.
You ever see a sleeping elephant?
I keep forgetting things, and sometimes I feel a little down.
Or is it C, a dragging dog.
I'm constantly panting and out of breath.
JJ, next question.
The one thing that I never had an issue with until now is...
A, shedding hair.
You know who you are.
B, weird pins and needles, that feeling in my leg or my arms?
Or is it C, brittle nails?
They might look like that.
Dr. Taz, what's the last question?
Last one.
When I look in the mirror, I notice that...
A, my face is puffy like a marshmallow.
No one wants that.
Or is it B, my tongue looks big and swollen like a balloon.
Maybe it's C, my skin looks as pale as a ghost, an unhappy ghost.
All right, everyone, tally up your answers.
We're going to reveal the personalized plan for you.
Simple.
Are you mostly A's?
Are you mostly B's?
Are you mostly C's?
If you answered mostly A's, you need to rebalance your thyroid, like Tiffany here, who I understand had mostly A's.
Is that correct?
What's your energy like?
A bit low.
A bit low.
Yes.
What does your family and friends say about your energy?
They say a lot.
They say, you know, what's going on with you?
You know, you got to do something about that.
And so you came on this show.
Dr. Dodd, what's the best way to reset your energy and get focused on something that an organ we all have that we sometimes forget about?
Dr. Oz, the thyroid is the energy powerhouse, so we have to make sure it has the nutrients it needs.
It needs a lot of iodine, and it needs a ton of selenium.
So we have got some solutions for you.
So walk us through a personalized approach that can work for everybody.
Not just Tiffany, but everybody.
For everybody, absolutely.
And help our thyroid.
This is a daily plan, and here's some great things you can do to balance your thyroid.
First of all, start with breakfast.
With breakfast, I like to pair eggs, which are high in iodine and high in selenium, the two thyroid nutrients, with a lot of raw veggies, which are high in carotenoids, those antioxidants that really fuel our entire body.
When you pair them together, the carotenoids absorb better.
So that's why it works out to be a powerhouse breakfast that I love to start with in the morning.
Next for snack, I love Brazil nuts with sunflower seeds.
And there's a reason to this.
You just need a few Brazil nuts, but they're high in selenium.
And then when it comes to lunch or dinner, we want some options there too, right?
So we love to start with lentils.
That's a great base.
Again, lots of selenium and lentils.
Good for your thyroid.
And then you can pair it with some cashews for a little crunchy texture and add some quinoa as well.
Mix it all together.
You've got an easy-to-go, easy-to-carry lunch or dinner.
Who wants Brazil nuts?
You have a Brazil nut.
And you get a Brazil nut.
And you get one, and you get one, and you get one.
All right, come on over here.
Next, if you answered mostly B's...
Mostly because you need to rebalance your B12 levels.
So walk us through, JJ, a personalized approach to this that might make sense.
To get B12 throughout the day.
Okay.
So as we age, our B12 levels, our body's ability to absorb B12 really declines.
I would know I'm 49. And what happens, you start getting fatigued.
Are you really?
I'm 49. I mean, you look wonderful.
Thank you!
Oh, my goodness.
Thank you.
So when your B12 levels decline, you get fatigue, dizziness, you know, that tingling in your fingers and toes.
We don't want that.
So you have to be able to eat more B12 in your foods.
And these are some foods that are high in B12. Like for breakfast, you can start with whole wheat bread.
You can have cereal.
But for lunch, I like chicken salad.
But instead of the mayo, I like to use Greek yogurt, which is high in B12. And, you know, Greek yogurt gives it a little nice flavor.
Rice it up a little bit.
Yes, yes.
Now she's doing it.
Yes.
And then for dinner, I like salmon.
Salmon's a great source of B12, but who doesn't like grilled salmon on their salads?
It's great, it's healthy, it's very tasty.
I'll tell you, you know who doesn't like salmon on their salads?
My wife, who's a vegetarian.
No, okay.
So for vegetarians out there, B12's a big problem for vegetarians because they don't get it normally.
The foods you're eating.
So if you're a vegetarian, I recommend two things.
One, you can get a supplement.
It's very important that it's a sublingual B12 supplement.
And then you can also use nutritional yeast.
Sprinkle it on your favorite foods and you'll naturally get a B12 boost from doing that.
We put it on popcorn.
Oh, yes!
It's the best.
Great idea.
All right, now, for the C's out there, if you like the most C's, you have to rebalance your iron levels.
Dr. Taz, explain why that's so important for the body to be balanced.
It's got to have the right amount of iron.
Yeah, I mean, we have a responsibility to get oxygen to all the different parts of the body, and iron is an oxygen transporter.
When those levels of oxygen fall...
The supplies cut off to vital organs like the brain or the heart, and that leaves us all just feeling fatigued.
That was that ghost picture I showed you.
Unhappy ghost.
You're not a playful, fun ghost.
You're an unhappy ghost.
JJ, you have a personalized plan to help us.
Okay, here's the plan.
So, a lot of people who enjoy eating meat, you can have grilled, lean steak.
Now, this is a source of animal protein, and a lot of people ask, how much is the right amount?
Right?
Because you hear, don't eat too much red meat.
If you put it in the palm of your hand, right, the palm of your hand, that's about the right serving size for animal protein.
But, Dr. Oz, you know I'm about that green smoothie line.
You are.
You sure are.
And so what I like...
Particularly, I like this for breakfast.
I like it to start the day.
This is great for vegans, non-meat eaters.
But if you have a power green smoothie, you can actually add in kale, you can add in spinach, you can add in strawberries, a little stevia.
When you add in oranges, it gives you vitamin C. And vitamin C helps your body absorb iron better.
So just adding in a little vitamin C will give it a little kick.
You know what I love about this?
We talked about three reasons why your balance is all off.
All of them caused by problems you can address.
And if you understand how food can work together like it's supposed to do, help us get where we need to be, you can fix it.
It's not rocket science.
It's not more expensive.
It's not challenging.
It's just a matter of knowing.
We're going to put all these personalized reset and rebalance plans online.
Please share them with us.
The people you love, they'll benefit as well.
Up next, find out what reset my own sleep.
It's a trick I learned in the operating room.
I don't share a lot of tips I learned in the OR. This will help you.
Maybe I can give you a better night's sleep tonight.
Stick around.
It's a tragic event surrounded by mystery and public deception.
The most extreme case of Munchausen by proxy I've ever seen.
At three months of age, Gypsy was put on a breathing machine feeding to.
The mom said she had leukemia, muscular dystrophy.
She actually chained her up to her bed.
Gypsy Blanchard is charged with convincing her boyfriend to stab her mother to death.
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
We're back with the ultimate reset and rebounds plan.
We have the best science-based solutions to fix your sleep without relying on over-the-counter pills.
Sleep expert Dr. Tanuja Hamilton joins us.
Thanks for being with us.
Happy to be here.
I think we agree sleep's number one thing.
Number one thing we need to reset in order to really rebalance our health.
Give us the reasons.
Dr. Oz, sleep is everything.
If you want to lose weight, improve your mood, Boost your brain power.
You need to work on your sleep.
In fact, research shows that sleep can improve your cognition.
It can strengthen your memory.
And there was a study done that showed people who slept less than seven hours were three times more likely to get sick than people who slept more than eight hours.
Sleep really is everything.
And everything revolves around sleep.
So it's so important that we pay attention to it.
Did you notice the lose weight up there, by the way?
Right?
That's real.
I think it's the best way to lose weight.
It's to sleep.
Now, I know you all sleep more than seven hours.
Actually, I know you don't because we have data around that.
Let's get to the science-based sleepy solutions to reset and rebalance your sleep starting tonight.
First up, you're going to sleep more if you use a sleep soundtrack.
You'll get sounder sleep, literally deeper.
Listen to this.
Isn't that good?
Explain the sleep soundtrack we're listening to.
How can it better our sleep?
Well, that's white noise.
Now, some people actually have difficulty sleeping in silence.
That can actually be disruptive.
Plus, you're more likely to hear changes in your environment.
A car going by, a garbage truck picking up trash, or a dog barking.
Suddenly in the still of the night, these sounds can be very disruptive.
White noise blends them all together so they're not as disruptive to your sleep.
So according to data from Sleep Score, gathered from 4 million nights of sleep that you guys have all contributed to, over three quarters of the participants felt that using sound helped them relax and improve their sleep.
All right, Serene tested out a mini sleep experiment for us.
Thanks for being here, Serene.
Here was the experiment.
Two nights, two nights using the Sleep Score app, but you use the sleep soundtrack before.
So I did two nights with just the regular app and just sleeping like I normally would, and then I did two nights with the white noise in the background.
All right, you want to know if there's a difference.
And you live in an area where there's a lot of noise, like garbage trucks and cars going by.
Yeah, so I'm actually on the first floor, first apartment in my building.
So when the train goes by, my wall goes like...
Shakes.
Like the rest of everything in your life.
So what was it like using the sleep sound system?
It was...
Like, I don't want to be corny and say, like, amazing, but honestly, it really was.
So we actually wanted to measure it, put some numbers on this.
So when Serene, your bass line, right, was whatever it was, not as good as it could be.
When you added a sound machine to give you the white noise, here's what happened.
Her total sleep time increased three hours and 20 minutes, which stunned me.
Stunned me.
And the REM sleep, that's the dream sleep, the sleep that's restorative as well, 25-minute increase.
A lot of us have forgotten how good we could feel if we slept our best.
So let me give you the last tip.
We've got a couple important ones.
The last tip is start tracking your sleep chart tonight.
Everyone's obsessed with tracking everything, like, you know, your heart rate, your calories, your steps.
I get all that.
But we've got to track our sleep as well.
I track my own sleep every single night.
There's actually a free app.
You can all get it right now.
It's from my partners at Sleep Score.
And we call them the sleep geeks, right?
But they're proud of that because they make Technology that's good enough to tell us what's really happening when we're not paying attention to our body.
It measures your respiratory rate and things like how long it took you to fall asleep.
You get a mind score, body score.
Here's why I care about it.
You need to be able to use this to hack your own body.
I wanted to answer the question, how important is exercise?
How big a deal is it?
Because I usually work out in the morning and I thought I was sleeping better, but I wasn't sure.
So this is a typical week of mine.
I'll give it to you.
I usually tape shows on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, right?
So in this week, these two days I taped shows, I didn't work out.
I got scores of 64 and 68. Look what happened the days that I worked out in the morning, right?
I was in the high 70s, right?
It's a big difference.
And I love the fact that it can match, you know, people, and it does, who exercise with sleep.
And they find that people who exercise get 11 minutes longer sleep than people who don't exercise.
So it makes a difference.
So I've got a little gift for y'all.
Thanks to my partners at Sleep Score, you can go to DrOz.com right now and learn how you can win a chance to win one of 10,000, that's a lot, 10,000 of these premium Sleep Score subscriptions.

Plus, they're given a 10% discount on other sleep tools.
Take advantage of it.
You can learn more about it on our website.
And for everyone in the audience, because I love you so much, you're all going home with a six-month premium Sleep Score subscription too!
Enjoy it!
If you can't share it, it's for you.
We'll be right back.
We've broken up with them.
Thought they treated us badly.
But the truth is, fats are our friends.
We're going to reset and rebalance the way we eat.
Full fat might be better.
All new odds.
That's coming up on Wednesday.
We're back with the ultimate reset and rebalance plan to fix your digestion.
Now, if you've been backed up, weighed down by all the heavy foods and sweets, then pay attention because we're giving you the natural laxatives that really work.
Dr. Taz is back with us.
So here's the deal.
If you are constipated, bloated, or have indigestion, she says it is better to reset with natural solutions.
Just change the whole equation.
Why is that?
Doctor, as many of these digestive symptoms are actually a function of an imbalance of the gut microbiome.
Over-the-counter remedies are okay, but they don't address the microbiome disruption, so we have to find natural remedies.
And one of the best ways to do that and to restore kind of gut function is to look at the nutrient load that we can get in.
And the best news of all, I think, is that the gut's actually highly intelligent and is our second brain.
And once we just give it what it needs, we can retrain it.
All right, let's bring in nutritionist J.J. Smith.
To help break down the natural reset plan, first we should start the day off with a shot of apple cider vinegar.
And here's the deal.
We love that stuff.
You know why?
Besides the fact it's the top home remedy in America, it seems to rebalance your blood sugar, which is an additional extra credit benefit.
So how does this natural laxative work?
Okay.
Apple cider vinegar has pectin, which is a water-soluble fiber that helps support good bacteria in the gut, which is critical for healthy digestion.
But the acidity in the vinegar also acts as a natural laxative to keep things moving.
I always say for me, if I'm pooping regularly, life is so much better.
Yes, you say it so elegantly.
It really is.
I feel so much better.
Dr. Tess, why do you want to start your day off with this?
It actually helps to populate more good bacteria.
So back to the microbiome.
Which is why it may work.
So, we've got some viewers who wanted to try this out, see if we can get things going.
Cora, Lonnie, and Shayna bravely participated.
We would need the verdict.
Did it help or not?
An apple a day.
Could it be replaced with apple cider vinegar for your constipation?
Ready?
Let's see the answers.
Ooh, two no's, but a yes!
Oh, yes!
Shayna's a very happy customer.
You know, I'll drink to that.
Here's this.
If it's a one in three chance with a natural laxative working...
Cheers!
And what you say is right.
If you're not regular, you're nowhere.
You can add a little tequila if you want, by the way.
The next natural laxative, chia seeds.
Taz, one of my favorite additions we can add in our food makes a difference.
Why do you like it for constipation?
I love it for constipation because chia seeds are full of fiber, so they're digested differently than other nutrients that we might take in.
The question is, how do you get it into your food?
That's why Linda is here.
She's a new chia seed snack that she's going to surprise us with.
Linda's a great chef, by the way.
Thank you.
So please tell us about these.
Okay, so they're super easy to make, very family-friendly.
First, you whisk together the peanut butter and the honey.
Then you add in chia seeds, flax meal, coconut, a little of cinnamon.
Linda, these are so good.
Thank you.
Pinch of salt.
At the end, you put in the chocolate chips.
Pull it out with a little ice cream scoop.
Roll it up.
You can chill it if you want.
Now, you see how the audience is about to rush you?
While we go off and talk about the last little tip, take this over to the audience.
Make them give the plate back.
That's always the problem we have.
Give the plate back.
Next, you're going to end your day with a cup of hibiscus tea.
Natural acid, does it work, Dr. Taz?
It does work for those who are constipated.
It really helps to get things moving.
And here's what we think.
We think the fruit acids in the hibiscus tea are actually what keeps things moving.
So what you could do is take this maybe the night before, and it's going to work throughout the night and into the next day, really calming the digestive system and really helping you to reset your gut.
You know, I love all the tips today, but this is special.
Audience, thumbs up, thumbs down.
Thumbs up.
Everyone's happy.
We're going to put the reset and rebalance plan along with all the recipes, including these chia no-bake balls on DrRoz.com.
Thank you very much.
I love having you here, both of you.
Be sure to check out a copy of Dr. Taz's book, Superwoman Rx.
We'll be right back.
Up next, you worry and immediately start Googling every single time you have a new symptom.
Just start asking everyone you know, am I dying?
Well, stay tuned because we'll decode the symptoms you worry about the most with a new chill out or freak out scale.
Is this you?
You Google every symptom and pain looking for reassurances so you don't freak out.
You constantly worry about your health and you have wondered in the back of your mind, am I dying?
Can you relate to this meme?
I am dying.
Please send help.
And then you feel and look like that.
Today, the ultimate body pain decoder to find out if you should chill out or freak out.
It's everything you need to know right now about your biggest body pains.
So here's what we did.
We set up a belly booth to find out which stomach pains you worry about the most.
Take a look.
One time when I was having such belly pain, it almost felt like a labor pain to me.
I mean, I thought that I was dying.
I felt this sharp pain in my stomach.
It felt like I was being cut from the inside out and I just had to sit there and just kind of breathe and look up what was going on on the internet because I didn't know what was going on with my stomach.
I felt like I was dying.
I've been having these really weird stomach pains on my lower right side and I'm like, is that gas?
I don't think it's gas because it's not going away.
So I find myself looking it up online and they're saying it could be something with my intestines and I'm like, oh my god, am I dying?
Let's bring in two doctors who can answer your biggest health fears without any judgment at all.
They're the authors of a new book, Am I Dying?
Cardiologist Dr. Chris Kelly, who's actually a former med researcher on this very show, and Dr. Mark Eisenberg, a friend of mine throughout my practice.
Here's a flashback photo, to start with Chris, of when he was in our med unit.
Look how much younger I look.
He looks the same.
I actually love when former medical students come back.
You guys have been so successful.
The med units, the nuclear reactor for the show, all the big ideas get researched and vetted.
But the students go on to become doctors and change American medicine.
So what's it like being here in front of the camera for a change?
It's amazing.
I feel like I've come full circle.
And for the audience...
That was season one of the show, and now we're in season 10, so that's pretty amazing.
Maybe that's why I've changed.
Stop reminding me.
And I learned so much working here at the show from you and the team, and it was really great applying those lessons while we were writing this book.
Well, I hope one of the lessons that you applied was this art that you've adopted, which is not to roll your eyes when patients say they're about to die.
No, definitely not.
I think it's very important that patients share their deepest fears with their doctors.
That's why they're there, and people shouldn't be shy.
So, Mark, let's zero in on stomach pain.
That's the first topic today.
Why is it so difficult to decode why your stomach is not right?
Well, stomach pain, abdominal pain, is one of the most common reasons why people go to the emergency room.
Basically, there's a lot of organs between here and here, and they all have the potential to go haywire.
But most of the time, it's not.
So, Mark and Chris have built the Ultimate Body Pain Decoder.
It'll help you decide if you need to chill out, make an appointment, or freak out.
So let's bring in one of our audience members who visited the belly booth with some pain complaints.
How are you?
I'm good.
So, Rayshon, what are your symptoms?
Okay, so I've been having this pain on my lower right side for like a week, and I haven't pooped.
And so it made me a little worried because I'm hearing things, it's like, but then nothing.
And so I'm like, is it gas?
It didn't happen.
I don't have gas now.
Everything's fine now.
Who have you confided?
My mom.
Your mom?
My mom.
So I call my mom about everything, and I definitely call her about this, and I'm like, Mom, it's happening again.
I'm having this pain right here again, and she just ignores me.
She ignores me, and what she does is she just turns up.
The TV. She's like, I don't want to hear anymore.
All right, audience, you all heard the complaint the way we would hear it in the emergency room.
So before we ask our experts to weigh in on this, you ought to vote.
Should Rayshawn chill out or freak out?
Yell it out.
Chill out.
They think you should chill out.
Very smart audience.
Well, that's what they're saying.
Let's find out.
That's what my mom says.
Mark, where is this five?
I agree with the smart audience.
You could probably chill out.
You think so?
It sounds like...
Yay!
It sounds like you have constipation, which is very common, which is defined as fewer than three bowel movements per week or difficulty getting the stool out.
The most common reasons why a lot of people are constipated is they're not drinking enough water or not eating foods high in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables.
All the things we talk about.
And Mom probably told you about it.
She's probably watching TV. She tells me, drink water, drink tea, lay down, anything, but just stop complaining.
And exercise.
And exercise.
I forgot exercise.
Chris, when should we freak out about belly pain?
Yeah, so I think in particular with constipation and cramping, I think that you should freak out if it's a change that's very sudden from your normal routine.
If you were going, you know, every day before and then, you're a week without going.
Yeah, because normally coffee makes me regular.
Yeah.
Right?
But it was holding back.
It was very crampy.
Well, if you've got cement in there, even coffee won't be.
All right.
Next up, we've got Renata here.
She has stomach symptoms.
Now, I know Renata a lot.
Well, in different ways.
You consider yourself a big worrier?
Well, you know, here's the thing.
I'm not a worrier about life, but I am a worrier about all this body, okay?
Let me tell you why.
You know, I always, I am a big Googler, okay?
If I feel something in my toe, I'm Googling, and, you know, I might be on my way to the hospital, okay?
All right, so focus me in.
You got a little pen there.
Draw on this mannequin.
The discomfort you said to me you were having in your belly.
Yes, yes.
Okay, so, I mean, let me show you where it is.
Around my nether regions down here.
The nether regions.
Yes, yes.
Around my nether, my pelvic area.
And what kind of pain do you have in there?
I mean, it's like stabbing.
It's like, you know, a piercing pain.
And that's not normal.
And I don't have time for that.
Audience, chill out or freak out?
Hello.
Thank you.
Freak out.
A lot of freak out.
Chris, what do you think?
So, no one has time for that, for sure.
Very good.
I mean, if you're having severe new pain that you've never had before and it's unbearable, that's something to freak out about, for sure.
But if you're having...
Cramping pains, it's very common.
Unfortunately, for example, during your period to have pain down there.
If it's really severe, it could be a sign of something like fibroids, endometriosis.
Those are things that you can see your doctor about and get treated.
But you don't have to run to the emergency room with that.
So, Mark, when do you have to think about going to the ER? When do you think you have to go from making an appointment, which is what this really is?
You shouldn't freak out and chill out.
You just make an appointment.
But there are times you ought to freak out.
Oh, definitely.
Especially if you're having sort of nausea in the middle.
The thought of eating is repulsive and you want to vomit and you start to have pain.
That never happens.
And you start to have pain around here.
Okay.
This could be your appendix.
And it might mean that you and your appendix might be spending your last day together.
Wow.
Okay.
Okay.
All right.
Solve that?
Yes.
Happy customer.
Up next, everyone's greatest fear is actually chest pain.
How many heart doctors does it take to decode your chest pain?
You got three on the set.
We'll be right back.
Ready for this?
It's The Dish on Oz, our brand new food series.
Make it tasty.
Daffy Oz and Friends.
Yes!
We're serving it up every Wednesday.
The Dish on Oz.
We're back with the question of the day.
Am I dying?
I'm here with my resident worrywart Renatha and her worriers club.
So, Barbara, what in particular is bothering you?
What gets you worried all the time?
I research everything, Dr. Oz, and the more I know, the more I worry.
I even take little pictures.
And, Noah, you worry so much, I'm told that you actually have a medicine kit in your purse when you walk around.
In my purse and in my car.
I'm a nurse.
I've been a nurse for 22 years, and so I see everything.
And I'm scared.
I'm worried about it.
So we're going to decode all the pains, right?
All the pains that land you in the ER. The one that's most worrisome to us usually is chest pain.
When you guys think about chest pain, what are you worrying about?
Heart attack.
That's right.
Heart attack.
What is going on?
You know what's happening.
It's just a matter of time, right?
Yes.
Surprisingly, interestingly, although we do get concerned about it, it's not...
Common.
It's not usually what's going on when you have a little chest pain.
Dr. Chris Kelly and Dr. Mark Eisenberg are back to help decode chest pain.
They are heart doctors too.
We often hear a lot of worries about this one.
So who wants to take us?
Mark, can you take us?
Sure.
Walk us through to decode this.
A quick way of figuring out simple steps if your chest pain is a problem or not.
When should you chill out and when should you panic?
Look, if you take a deep breath and it hurts for a few seconds and then stops, it's likely a muscle spasm or some pain between your ribs.
You could chill out.
Okay.
Next.
Eating along with this sour feeling in your throat, what does that mean?
So if you're lying down and you feel a sour taste in your mouth, it likely is reflux.
You know, it could be acid reflux or peptic ulcer disease.
You should see your doctor because there might be, especially if it lasts more than two weeks, there might be some medications or treatments he or she can provide.
But not urgent.
You don't have to go to the ER. No, make an appointment.
Make an appointment.
And finally, you say we ought to freak out sometimes.
Sometimes.
Yes, I mean, sometimes chest pain is a heart attack or a lung clot or a...
Tear in the main artery of the aorta.
If you have chest pain that lasts at least five minutes and it's just not going away and it's sometimes associated with shortness of breath, especially in women, you should probably go to the emergency room.
Worried stuff, how does that make you feel about the ultimate decoding of your body pain?
Less worried, more worried, no difference?
I'm a little less worried.
I mean, now that I have the blue, yellow, and red of it all, I'm a little less worried.
Let's tackle back pain.
Chris, come on up.
Warrior Club.
Actually, before I do that, Warrior Club, when you think of back pain, right, and you start Googling and worrying and calling mom and everything else, what's the diagnosis you come up with most likely?
Scoliosis.
Will I ever walk again?
Am I going to walk again?
Am I dying?
Oh, my goodness.
The extreme.
Yeah, that's concerning.
Decoded for us.
What should we chill out for?
Yeah, so back pain is extremely common.
Pretty much everybody has it from time to time, especially if your job requires you to stand up during the day or do a lot of physical activity.
If you have a cramping pain, it's been less than a month, you can power through it with pain relievers, maybe even a massage if you can get one.
That's something that's probably going to go away on its own and not something that you have to see your doctor about.
All right, next let's talk about...
Times when you have two symptoms having at the same time, it might actually reduce the loudness of the alarm bell that you should be having, but it might make you make an appointment.
For example.
Sure.
So one of the more concerning causes of back pain causes burning on one side of your back, usually in a strip on your back.
And that's possibly shingles.
And you should see your doctor right away because there's medicines that you can take to make the pain go away and make your symptoms better.
But not the ER. On the other hand, there are some freak-out scenarios.
Yes.
One of the freak-out scenarios is if you have severe throbbing-like pain on one side of your back, kind of by your spine.
That could be coming from one of your kidneys.
And in addition to getting infected, your kidneys can get blocked up by stones.
And that can be excruciatingly painful.
And you shouldn't try to live through that.
You should go to the ER for pain medicines and to get treatments that can help the stone come down and pass.
Martha, have you ever had a kidney stone?
Oh, no.
I've never had a kidney stone.
Here, put your hand out.
Oh, gosh.
What are you going to give me?
Here, now you have a kidney stone.
Oh!
Thank you for my kidney stones.
Shut up.
Look at this.
Yeah, these can be different size.
Wow.
These can be a nice pair of jewelry, earrings for you, by the way.
These two right there.
They're a little special something for the show.
Oh, wow.
You see they're sometimes small like sand?
Right.
Now, imagine passing, see how sharp that is?
Yeah.
Imagine passing that down your ureter.
Wow.
It connects the kidney to the bladder.
That would really hurt.
Oh, wow.
Because that pain you don't want to get treated for.
Believe me, I don't have to remind you.
Kidneys don't, people know it.
Okay.
Thank you for being honest in your symptom class.
You guys did a wonderful job.
Thank you very much.
Welcome back.
Thank you.
You can find the entire guide to body pain on dros.com for more ways to decode your body pain.
You can pick up Dr. Kelly.
Dr. Eisenberg's book is wonderful.
It's called Am I Dying?
A Complete Guide to Your Symptoms and What to Do Next.
We'll be right back.
We've broken up with them, thought they treated us badly, but the truth is, fats are our friends.
We're going to reset and rebalance the way we eat.
Full fat might be better.
All new Oz.
That's coming up on Wednesday.
There's more to treating dry skin than just meets the eye.
It's not just the tightness, it's the dullness and flakes that you see on the surface.
Yeah, it's right there, but there's a much deeper issue at play, one that involves protecting the skin's surface and the epidermis.
Now, if you've been moisturizing and your skin still feels tight and looks dull and flaky...
Then your dry skin cream may not be doing enough.
To help us with this issue, I brought in board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Liz Matanzi, who's here on behalf of my trusted sponsor partner, Userin.
Listen, here's the key thing.
You've got to believe your dry skin is there.
You've got to also understand that you have to effectively moisturize the outside in order to help retain the moisture in the inside.
How do you do that?
Hi, Dr. Oz.
How are you?
Well, there are two key approaches that are particularly impactful when we're thinking about treating dry skin.
The first is we want to strengthen the skin's protective moisture barrier.
We do that with ceramides.
Ceramides are great to help lock the moisture in the skin, and some creams stop there.
But it's even better if you go above and beyond just ceramides and look for natural ingredients called natural moisturizing factors or NMFs.
Now NMFs are things like amino acids.
They're naturally found in the skin.
And what they do is they intensively hydrate and boost the moisture within the skin to prevent the dry skin from coming back.
We have a little demonstration to show us exactly why this works.
And experts believe this is how it works with dry skin in particular, that it is actually deeper than that.
So our skin is a natural barrier on the outside.
And if it starts to get dry and can't keep the moisture in, it'll start to flake.
And you'll see this on the surface, right?
You've all been there, especially this time of year.
But experts believe that when you use a cream, the right kind of cream with natural moisturizing factors, that you can avoid this.
What is this?
This is all the moisture escaping from deep down, and that's why your skin is dry on the outside, but it's dry underneath as well.
You don't want this.
It looks pretty on a set, but that's a problem.
When you're walking around, your skin feels like it's pulling you in.
So how do ceramides work?
So ceramides, there's a couple things going on here.
So ceramides work to help strengthen and boost the skin's protective moisture barrier.
So they lock the skin in.
But then you have the natural moisturizing factors that literally act like sponges.
So within the skin, they help to retain the moisturizer within.
So the combination of the natural moisturizing factors and then the ceramides on top, you get really great moisturization of the skin.
So these little sponges that you just saw swelled up, those are the NMFs or natural moisturizing factors that are a bunch of different things.
But without them being big and swollen and...
And plump like that, you're not going to have the moisture under the skin.
So if I understand correctly, you'll end up with the flaky skin I have.
But in your scenario, the skin doesn't flake and you're plump underneath as well.
It's true.
The combination of the two is the key.
So how do you accomplish this?
What do dermatologists recommend to relieve dry skin?
Okay, well, it's not a surprise.
I recommend a cream that has both components to be the most effective.
So one that I like and recommend often is the Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream because it has the combination.
It has the combination of ceramides.
And natural moisturizing factors.
And it's that combination that makes it so effective.
You get immediate relief of dry skin.
Plus, you get long-lasting moisturization up to 48 hours.
This cream has been clinically proven to repair very dry skin.
And it's great because it doesn't have any fragrances, so I recommend it even for people who have sensitive skin.
So I asked two members of the audience, two viewers, Sherry and Teresa, who have been struggling with their dry skin to test out Eucerin's Advanced Repair Cream and report back to us.
Now, I'm going to start off.
This is what Sherry's skin looked like before using Eucerin's Advanced Repair Cream.
It's okay that I showed this, right?
Absolutely.
When I first saw, this is your thigh heading down to the knee here.
So how would you describe that?
Oh, dry, flaky.
I would take my pants off and find dead skin all over my pants.
You know, most dust in the house is dry skin.
Yep.
So do you have a lot of dust in the house?
I do.
Okay, it's one test.
So how long after you started using Eustream did you start to see a difference?
Literally, as soon as I put it on, it made such a difference.
And it was lightweight.
It felt great.
Here's the picture.
We just compare them so you all see.
It's nice.
I think it's pretty cool.
How does it feel?
It feels great.
I mean, my skin is so soft.
I mean, my boyfriend loves touching me.
Are you surprised by these results?
So, these results are great, but honestly, I'm not that surprised because I recommend this in the office on a regular basis, and people tell me this all the time.
Yeah, I was so pleasantly surprised.
Really happy.
I mean, I heard about it, read about it, and really had amazing results.
One of the most romantic things I've heard on the show is that my husband liked touching me.
It's just nice.
It just brings...
It warms the cocktails of my heart.
Teresa, this is your skin before.
Again, I thank you both very much for sharing your skin images.
That's okay.
Welcome.
What were you feeling when you took this picture?
So embarrassed a little bit.
I have very fishy, flaky skin.
And sometimes it's really bad, especially in the winter.
So I was hesitant to take that picture.
And Dr. Oz, you can see right in the middle of this photo, that skin is flaky.
It's crinkly.
You can tell that it's dry.
So can I show you the after version?
Absolutely.
The one we're all proud of.
Very proud of it.
This is your skin today.
Awesome.
It's smooth.
Beautiful.
Describe in your own words.
How does it look?
And more importantly, how does it feel to you?
Well, initially when I applied the product, it was like velvety smooth.
Very nice, but not sticky.
And I could feel like it worked right away.
Absolutely.
It was a great product.
You're happy?
Thrilled.
Great.
Do people like touching your skin, too?
Oh, absolutely.
It's a recurring theme here.
When should you apply the cream, ideally?
So I think one of the best times to apply a moisturizer in general is after getting out of the bath or the shower.
You want to lock the hydration into your skin.
Another great time to apply it is right before you go to bed.
But I think the key is consistency.
You want to get into the habit in a daily routine of applying your moisturizer to get the most out of it.
So good news for everybody at home.
Thanks to our trusted sponsorship partner, Eucerin, beginning tomorrow at 12 p.m.
Eastern Time.
The first 5,000 people, you heard me right, 5,000 people, go to dros.com, will receive a coupon for one free jar of Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream, which is pretty cool, but I can tell the audience here is not wowed by that.
So here's my thought.
I suspect you guys probably want to have your skin look the way we just showed.
True?
But you also have friends that are going to be jealous of you who are going to want to start touching your skin because they want to be like you.
So we're not going to stop.
We're just giving all of you one bottle.
You're all getting two bottles.
Keep one.
Give one of your friends.
Two bottles of Eutron's Advanced Repair Cream.
Thanks to our sponsorship partners.
Thank them very much.
Enjoy and share.
We'll be right back.
Awesome!
This is a tragic event.
The most extreme case of Munchausen by proxy I've ever seen.
Discharged with convincing her boyfriend to stab her mother to death.
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Today, how a Husky saved its owner's life three times.
If you're a dog owner, you probably noticed your canine companion is so in tune with you and your family, they seem to know when something's wrong.
My dog, Khaleesi, Always know.
She tracks us around.
She runs after the grandkids.
This husky here, when you look at that, picked up on its owner's ovarian cancer before doctors did.
Three times.
Stephanie joins us today via Zoom with her husky, Sierra.
There he is.
Stephanie, were you aware of Sierra's unusual abilities before your cancer diagnosis?
No.
She actually just acted like a normal dog.
Played, just wallowed on the floor, and did all those other normal things that dogs do.
But we don't know they can save lives.
It's just a regular old dog.
But the first time you had cancer, I understand you went to the doctor because you were in pain, bad pain.
They didn't find anything, but your dog gave you cues that something was wrong.
What happened?
What she did was she smelled my belly very intently and I actually thought maybe I had spilled some food on my belly.
And then she went and hid in the back closet behind all the clothes and curled in a small little ball.
So that to me was very much out of her behavior.
So I thought to myself something I needed to check out.
She was scared.
She was scared.
Your doctors confirmed you had stage 3 ovarian cancer.
That's correct.
And you were treated with an extensive surgery.
I understand as you got past that, Sierra, who's wandering around behind you there, saved your life two more times.
How did that occur?
Absolutely.
In 2015 and 2016, I had reoccurrences both times.
What is that like, realizing that your canine companion has saved your life three times?
I get a little emotional over it.
We have a pretty special relationship.
She's definitely been an indicator for me and my cancer.
Are you doing okay now?
I am.
I am no evidence of disease right now.
I started a clinical trial about 30 months ago, and I have no evidence of disease right now.
Well, I'm happy Sierra's on your lap.
Enjoy.
You and not running away.
Let me, if I can, bring everyone up to date on why what you're telling me makes sense as a doctor.
Dogs' noses have a sense of smell that's thousands of times more sensitive than ours.
And the research finds that cancer-sniffing dogs, and there's a lot of work on this, can detect a disease in humans with as much as a 98% accuracy.
Think about that.
And I thank you for sharing your story.
I wish you both great health and longevity.
Remember, dogs are not only a man's best friends, but doctors as well, as it turns out.
