Time Text
Radical weight loss methods.
You have to see to believe.
You lost a lot of weight.
See what they did.
I feel great.
I feel sexy.
I feel alive.
That changed everything.
And the Day Off Diet success stories.
I think it was a game changer for me, Dr. Oz.
From your favorite media and radio personalities.
Now I got my swag back.
Coming up next.
We'll save lives today.
You guys ready to get healthy?
It's a game changer day.
And the game we're changing.
I love that you're excited.
The game we're changing is weight loss.
Almost six months ago, two viewers, people like you, Kelly and Sheena, took control of their lives when they decided they wanted to lose weight once and for all.
Now, we've been following them carefully before, during, and now after their weight loss journeys.
And today, their transformations will blow your mind.
Then, both women reveal their secret to their weight loss success.
And speaking of success, The Day Off Diet success stories from some of the media personalities and radio hosts that I talk to just about all the time.
They loved the program so much when we first started talking about it with them that they actually went on it themselves and it helped change their lives.
But first, Kelly is back.
Now, Kelly allowed our cameras to follow her as she underwent a brand new non-invasive weight loss procedure.
It's called the balloon.
And this is how it works.
The balloon is on the end of a catheter.
You're sedated, not asleep, but sedated.
The balloon's placed non-invasively through your mouth, through the esophagus, into the stomach.
Then you blow the balloon up, takes up a lot of room in the stomach.
You detach it from the endoscope, which comes out of your mouth, and you leave the balloon behind.
So when you eat, the balloon stays in your stomach.
It makes you feel fuller.
Then you put the scope back in a couple months later, take the balloon out, and you're back to the way you started.
Theoretically, you've changed your lifestyle.
And because of that, you won't regain the weight back again.
Now, Kelly had the balloon inserted in her stomach just like this.
Here's a look at her journey, an experience that may change how you think about weight loss.
My name's Kelly and I'm 50 years old.
I'm a married mother of two teen boys.
Ever since high school, I was struggling with weight.
I eat healthy and I'm still gaining weight.
At this time in my life, I want to get my weight under control.
I've chosen the gastric balloon procedure because it's not as invasive as the gastric bypass and those types of procedures.
What I want from this is me to just be healthy.
I'm not nervous and I trust my doctor.
It was all very painless, very easy.
There's a part of me that's like, really?
There's a balloon in there?
Alright.
Kelly, let's see you now.
Come on out.
You look so good.
Oh my goodness.
I'm so happy for you.
Me too.
Come join me.
So you are 188 pounds.
Right.
Before this whole thing started?
Yes.
And I gotta say, I mean, everyone can see right now that you look remarkable.
How much lighter do you feel?
You've lost a lot of weight.
I've lost 28 pounds.
Six months.
That's unbelievable.
What have you learned about eating as you've gone through this process?
Obviously, the balloon takes up room, so it can serve as a crutch, but how do you eat differently now?
Well, I definitely eat...
More, a number of different snacks throughout the day, and one of the things I do is have to kind of prepare myself for that every morning.
So you kindly kept the video diary.
Yes.
And I was particularly interested in how you prepared the meals.
I guess you went through the snacks and all the things you've just been alluding to, so take a look, everybody.
One of the things I'm learning to do is every weekend I make a big batch of a number of different things so that I will have food easy to grab throughout the week.
I always make a big thing of tuna and just take a little bit with me every day and it's really good on celery or cucumber chips.
The other thing I make is a little spaghetti and meatball kind of thing where I just have some meatballs.
And put just a little bit of sauce on it, and this is a perfect little snack for me.
This right here is spaghetti squash, my favorite spaghetti alternative.
One of the things I focus on is making sure to use a small plate so that I feel like I'm getting more than I probably am.
I've asked Kelly's bariatric surgeon, Dr. Michael Steiner, to join us.
He's one of the first doctors to perform this procedure in the country.
Congratulations for doing it.
Thank you.
She's an amazing job.
What makes patients like Kelly ideal candidates for this balloon?
Well, first of all, she's someone who didn't want surgery.
I do thousands of bands and bypasses and sleeves, and I brought the balloon in specifically for people who said, I want notable weight loss with some help and a good tool, but I don't want surgery.
Next is her weight loss goals were very reasonable.
Her BMI was 33. She had about almost 50 pounds to lose, and she said, I want to lose about 30 or so pounds.
That's perfect.
And next is she really committed to a big change.
It's about changing your lifestyle, as you know.
It's all about, you know, when the rubber hits the road, what you do with it.
And for her, it was we taught her how to eat differently, how to engage your life differently, how to celebrate without always making food the root of the celebration, and also how to add some activity to her life.
Now, all that said and done, Kelly, sometimes people fall off the wagon, so to speak.
Yes.
And as we followed you through your wonderful success story, there are times when it wasn't so bright.
Correct.
What happened around the holidays?
Well, the holidays were definitely difficult.
You know, in my office, I work in a dental office, and strange as it might seem, they have more candy and junk there than you would ever think.
In a dental office?
Yes.
Oh my goodness.
I guess it's an annuity.
They're looking for patients.
Yes, I guess so.
Chew on this.
Exactly.
So there would always be the bad snacks as well at that time.
And if I didn't have my meals planned out, if I didn't have my things with me, I'd...
I often fall to the poor choices.
That's true with or without a balloon or procedures that we're talking about.
Dr. Schneider, how much does having a balloon in there serve as a crush to get you past these times of crisis?
So it's not like we talked about it earlier.
It's not about not indulging.
I'd like you to indulge a little bit.
That's part of life.
I wouldn't do anything that made it so you couldn't be quote-unquote normal.
But what it is is it made it so when you're full all the time with the balloon, you eat less.
That's the difference.
Now, that balloon that's put in there, that showed it coming out with the scope, that's going to have to happen pretty soon.
You're almost at six months, which is how long normally you leave the balloon in.
Correct.
So are you worried about that?
Does that concern you about staying at the weight you're at right now?
I'm certainly concerned about feeling hungry again, but I know what my patterns are and what I need to do for eating in a way that's comfortable and healthy for me.
So I'm going to just do it the way I'm doing it every day and keep on it.
Are you hungry now?
No.
You don't get hungry at all?
I'm almost never hungry.
I'm almost never hungry.
Sometimes I have to remind myself, Kelly, it's been two hours.
And that's a big difference from before.
It is.
It really is.
How many of you, put your hands up, would consider this for a family member yourselves?
If it could take away, there's some pretty straight arms up in the air.
That's pretty cool.
And men as well.
I'm impressed by this.
I like to follow it.
I don't know how many have been done around the country, but I'm sure it's a growing number.
Next, we've also been following Sheena.
Who's been struggling to keep her weight off her entire life.
life, but wait until you see the success she's had on her weight loss journey this time.
Next, we followed Sheena for six months and chronicled her journey with this breakthrough weight loss method.
She'll share her results.
You've got to see it to believe.
I feel great.
Could this be the life-changing procedure you've been looking for?
Next.
Could carbs cause lung cancer?
A Dr. Oz investigation.
Even if you've never smoked a cigarette, it could be what's on your plate that makes you sick.
See what we uncovered.
Plus, you eat a low-carb diet to lose weight.
But what do you do when it causes chronic constipation?
We have answers and super easy ways to never be constipated again.
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
We just saw the success Kelly had with her weight loss balloon.
Now it is Sheena's turn.
Six months ago, Sheena opted for the radical weight loss method of gastric sleeves.
Now, she allowed us to follow and chronicle her weight loss journey.
Today, she's here to share her results honestly, openly.
You've got to see this to believe it.
My name is Sheena, and I'm 33 years old.
For most of my adult life, I've wrestled with my weight.
I haven't been able to maintain a healthy weight in a long time, and it's been impossible for me to lose weight on my own.
So at this point in my life, I truly believe that the gastric sleeve is the best option for my life, to get rid of the weight once and for all.
This morning I'm here for my gastric sleeve surgery, and I'm super excited.
I'm anxious, I'm nervous, but I'm ready to have this done.
It's week one post-op.
I have a little bit of tenderness since I've got the surgery.
I feel like I'm losing weight, but I'm not sure.
I haven't weighed myself.
Sheena started her weight loss journey at 245 pounds.
Gina, let's see you now.
You look so darn good.
Thank you.
Oh my goodness.
Thank you.
Come have a seat.
I actually want to stand with you almost.
You look so good.
How do you feel?
I feel great.
I've been...
I'm sorry.
That's a lot to say.
Don't be sorry at all.
You did something that's unbelievable.
Thank you.
I feel great.
The reception that I've gotten from...
Friends and family and my co-workers have been amazing.
They were really genuinely happy for me.
They're rooting for you.
Yes.
Alright, so the big question.
You started at 245. It's been six months.
What's your weight now?
184 pounds.
It's 60 pounds.
Yeah, 61 pounds.
61 pounds.
I love it.
Don't lose that one pound.
That's right.
That is so cool.
Are you going to keep going on it?
I'm going to keep going.
You know, I'm gonna keep going, and I'm striving, I'm working out, I'm trying to stay fit.
I mean, I feel great.
Let me show everybody what you did.
I know you know it's cold, but I want people to be clear.
You can stay there, it's okay.
So I'm gonna show you what this gastric sleeve procedure really is.
A surgeon goes in through these little ports, so there's not a big incision like in the old days.
Little tools are put in there, and this part of the stomach makes your hunger hormones.
This surgeon staples that part and gets rid of it.
And then once it's stapled, you've got a stomach of stuff that's maybe one-tenth of what it used to be.
And with the hunger hormones gone, guess what?
You don't get hungry again.
This little banana-shaped piece of stomach can't take that much food in there.
It signals to your body that you have to eat less food and you're not going to crave it.
This leave is permanent, so over time, you keep losing weight, at least in theory.
Now, Sheena's doctor, bariatric surgeon, Marina Kurian, is also here.
Congratulations again.
Thank you.
I'd love to get honest about why some patients succeed and others don't.
What made Sheena's story so special?
Why is she doing well?
Sheena really made the decision to lose weight herself, right?
So it wasn't because she had to because of diabetes or high blood pressure.
She was super motivated, and that's really helped her with her weight loss journey.
So let's get through the nitty-gritty of what's going on in your life.
You have to eat differently.
We just showed a little animation that you only got one-tenth of stomach.
So what's a typical meal, and how has that changed?
Well, a typical meal is about...
Maybe 70, 75% less of what I used to eat.
So take a bowl of pasta, for example.
A typical bowl that we normally eat, how much of that would you eat?
I would eat about a quarter.
A quarter of it.
If that.
So sort of that, that's actually your pictures, by the way.
Yeah, those are my pictures.
What I've learned is I feel, you know, suffice with what I have in front of me.
And if I don't want to eat anymore, I don't feel pressured to.
And you don't feel hungry.
No.
Doctor, who makes someone a good candidate for Steve's surgery?
Well, first of all, people have to meet some of the weight loss criteria, which we're usually saying 70 to 100 pounds or more that they need to lose.
And once they meet those criteria, they're usually good candidates if they're motivated.
They've tried other diets in the past.
They've been in other programs.
So what are the odds?
That Sheena, as well as she's doing now, might relapse.
I know a lot of folks say they don't want to have bariatric surgery because they've heard of failures.
How common would it be for Sheena to fail now?
So some of the data that we have right now, and it changes because as we do more procedures, we see where our failures are and how we can improve upon what we do.
Some of the data suggests that about 20% of patients can have inadequate weight loss or have some weight regain with a sleeve.
So because of that, you know, we have a lot of touch points where we try to keep on and we look at her weight loss, we look at...
What her diet is and how she's doing, how motivated she is.
It's a lot of accountability for her and for me as a surgeon and other surgeons like me.
We like to see our patients to make sure they're doing well.
Well, the numbers may say 80%.
I think it's 100% success for you.
All right, here's the deal.
What are your biggest fears and concerns about weight loss surgery?
I know they're out there.
I really do feel this is the most underperformed operation in America.
I don't want to force people into it, but I don't want you to avoid it because you're scared or you don't know.
So we're gonna answer all those big questions when we come back Next what's holding you back from getting the body you want?
We answer your most pressing questions about weight loss surgery.
The truth behind these radical procedures.
It's the best decision I've ever made.
Are they right for you?
Find out next.
Now, you all know I'm passionate that weight loss surgeries are the most underperformed procedures in the country.
We can change that if we get out of the fear.
And because that fear holds us back, I'm going to have you ask all your questions right now to people who know where you are.
Kelly and Sheena, along with their surgeons, are here to answer your weight loss surgery questions.
So I'm going to go through the list.
You can take any questions you want.
You can pass them to each other as you desire.
Are you ready?
Take it away.
Give me your name as you stand.
Do you still feel like you're still dieting?
And what's your first name?
Neteisha.
Neteisha.
Kelly, you want to take that one?
I don't feel like I'm dieting at all anyway.
I've always been dieting throughout my life, so it always felt like feast or famine.
This way, I'm able to eat just smaller amounts, and if I want that donut, I do have kind of a designated day where I can have, you know, this is my cheat meal, you know, and that makes me feel better.
Cheat bite.
Yeah, I get the idea of a cheat bite.
All right, go ahead.
Can you both eat whatever you like, but only in smaller amounts?
I can eat whatever I like.
I would say for anybody that is thinking about having the surgery, really ask yourself, what's my relationship with food?
It's the best decision I've ever made.
Oh, that means a lot.
Thank you.
I wanted to know, how much does a balloon actually cost?
Dr. Snyder, how much does the balloon cost?
Depending on where you're in the country, anywhere from about $7,000 to $8,000.
It's at this time not covered by insurance, but that's always a little late to come on board.
Dr. Curian?
Yeah, the sleeve gastrectomy is covered by many insurances.
The balloon at this time, as Mike said, Dr. Snyder said, it's not yet.
And that's because it's new to market.
It is FDA approved, though.
But we're hoping that it will get covered somewhere down the line.
I appreciate all your honesty and very insightful questions.
We'll be right back.
Coming up next, some of my favorite radio DJs and TV stars share how the day-off diet changed their lives.
What they did to fit it into their busy schedules and drop the weight.
We'll reveal their surprising results.
Coming up next.
Could carbs cause lung cancer?
A Dr. Oz investigation.
Even if you've never smoked a cigarette, it could be what's on your plate that makes you sick.
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
This past January, I launched my biggest weight loss plan to date.
The Day Off Diet.
And your response has been overwhelming.
So far, our plan has been downloaded nearly 400,000 times.
Our Day Off Diet page visited over 1 million times.
And hundreds of thousands of you got in on the action.
Even celebrities are taking notice.
And today, how some of your favorite media personalities are losing pounds on the plan.
Stopping me on the street, remarking how easy the day-off diet is.
You post results on my Facebook page, give and share recipes on Pinterest.
Now, the way you heard about the day-off diet plan is when I kicked it off with the media personalities and my friends on the radio.
Many of them, you know what, when they heard about the diet, they started on it too.
So wait until you see their results.
I don't know if I can do this thing, man.
It's so easy, you can't help but do it.
But there were four in particular who stuck with the plan and saw remarkable results.
Chicago news anchor Darlene Hill.
Radio host Sean Valentine.
And Carolina Bermudez.
Now before we see their results, let me recap the day off diet because it's not too late for you to get started.
First, you get one day off a week that you pick based on your schedule.
Now, you've got to have a high-protein breakfast that you can choose to eat or drink on the days you're on the diet.
Meals that are a combination of protein, complex carbs, and veggies, and there are tons of recipes.
Two, MUFA snacks, and unlimited non-starchy veggies.
That's it.
Simple plan, and it really works.
We've heard it over and over again, but I want you to meet the media personalities and radio hosts who are proud of the weight that they have lost.
Are you ready to see them?
Let's reveal them.
Here are the results.
Reality star Trina Braxton, radio host Carolina Bermudez, radio host Sean Valentine, and news anchor Darlene Hill.
Guys, come on over.
He looks wonderful.
Carolina, always more beautiful than before.
Of course Sean wants a kiss.
I am so proud of you.
You know, I was so proud a member of people who I spoke to about the plan.
Folks, celebrities like you, who did it out of the kindness of your heart because we wanted to have different audiences understand what this program was about.
You all have been there.
You all understood how important this was to America, and yet you went on it yourselves.
To me, it just touched my heart in a very deep way.
So I want to run through, and you're going to have all of them tell you how they do it, because this is important.
Trina, I'm going to stroke you.
You lost 12 pounds?
Yes!
Is that right?
And with those sisters of yours, that's a bit of a challenge, I can imagine.
You're pecking on each other.
What was the key?
How'd you do it?
The key was I was ready.
I hit the ground running when I did it, and I was mentally prepared to do it.
And it wasn't a quote-unquote diet for me that allowed me to eat.
And still do what I needed to do.
So it was fabulous for me.
Carolina, working mom with two kids.
Yes.
You just had your second child and we talked about it on your show.
Yes.
You got it to fit into your schedule.
I sure did.
You know what it is?
Preparation is everything.
So Sunday nights my husband knew that I was off limits because I was chopping and getting everything ready for my upcoming week so that I never had to reach for anything else.
I think it's all about...
Planning and preparing so that you can set yourself up to win.
And you lost seven pounds.
I lost seven pounds and my baby will be six months in a couple of days.
You gave your weight to your child.
Sean, you lost 12 pounds.
I did.
I did.
It's still staying off.
Thank you.
And what got you to start on the diet?
I decided, you know, that I just needed to make a change.
I was just, you feel it getting bigger.
And the kid comes up to you and puts his hand in the belly and goes, Dad, what do you do?
I'm not, buddy.
You're an eight-year-old kid.
You shouldn't be saying that to your father.
But I decided, kind of a little heavier note, but I had lost my father in February.
So I decided that I had to make a difference to be there for my kid.
And this diet, for me, became more of a lifestyle than a diet.
So it really kicked in, and I could really absorb it and be part of it, and I just love it.
So thank you.
Thank you for that.
I've got to talk about Darlene for a second, because Darlene challenged me.
We're going to show some of this later on.
But you lost 16 pounds, which is a ton of weight.
But you lost six pounds the first week.
How did that motivate you?
You told me that was going to happen, and I said, yeah, right.
Let me see if that happens.
And it motivated me so, Dr. Oz, it made me want more.
It made me want to be that loser.
That six pounds changed me because it was the beginning of the year.
I'm staring at 50. I'll be 50 years old this summer.
And I just said, I've got to do something different.
I've got to do something different.
You want a different outcome?
Do something different.
So when I started the diet...
It became my way of life.
I don't even think about the day off now because I'm that good.
And I gotta tell you, I gotta tell you, in addition to the 16 pounds that I lost, I lost 16 inches because I work out every day.
Every day.
God darn it.
Man, that's why you're sitting next to Oz.
Part of the reason I wanted to have you guys are as busy as you are and everyone knows who you are, you have busy schedules.
And the day off diet was not designed, not designed to be your schedule.
Right.
It's designed to fit into your schedule.
So I want to understand exactly what each of you did to get through your days and still stay on program to lead you to great success.
So I don't know who wants to go first.
We're going to go with Darlene first, right?
I'm going to take, if we can, a moment now and show everybody this sort of tense moment that I just adore.
Take a look.
I called you out on this one.
I called you out on this one.
I'm going to announce it.
That was live TV. Yes, it was.
And I'm sitting in a studio in New York and I heard the passion in your voice.
And so I want to understand how you did this.
Did you also hear the pain?
Because I wasn't...
I mean, that was January 4th, the day you kicked it off.
I was in a lot of pain, too.
Because I knew I was bigger than I was.
Now I got my swag back, but I was bigger than I wanted to be.
Well, you've got your swag for sure.
So walk us through how you fit it into your day.
Okay, I'm up early.
Because I do the morning news right there at Good Day Chicago starting at 7 o'clock.
So I'm up in the newsroom about 5 o'clock.
And when I do get up, you start off with the hot water and the lemon to help kick up my metabolism.
I go with a piece of fruit and some yogurt maybe.
That's easy.
Then by about 7.30, which is kind of 5 o'clock somewhere, I go with a salad, steamed veggies, and some fruit.
Then after the show...
Before my noon show, I have a big salad.
I love some chicken or salmon.
I don't eat red meat or pork, so I try to keep things lean without getting bored.
And by 11 o'clock, or by 12 o'clock, I'm going to the gym.
I'm going to the gym.
I'll grab some nuts.
And by the time I get done working out, I go home, have another salad, have some grilled shrimp, something like that, because, like I said, I eat a lot of seafood, and that's my day.
That is it for me.
All right, so that's a fair amount of food.
So I'm gathering you're not hungry very often.
Not at all, because I'm getting the free foods, those free leafy greens in.
I eat that constantly.
Now, like everybody else, it's the day-off part of the day-off diet that you resonate to.
So what do you do in your day-off?
Okay, so I'm not about cookies, candy, or cakes.
I'm about that cocktail.
A cocktail?
I gotta have a cocktail.
I gotta have a cocktail.
Dr. Oz, I'm not saying that I'm a drunk or a lush, but I gotta have a cocktail.
That's how I celebrate my day off.
And before it would be a couple of drinks.
Now I'm trying to be good.
I love you.
I love you.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
When we come back, why are these stars?
Weren't you to join them in the day off diet?
Stay with us.
What up, Dr. Oz?
Dr. Oz family, it's going down.
Louis G, big boys neighborhood.
So 175 when I started the diet.
Five weeks later, I'm 10 pounds down.
165. I no longer think of fast food every time I ring the cowbell on this show, so I'm really watching what I eat now, which is amazing.
You know what?
I loved it.
Next, two of the biggest names in radio.
What the day-off diet did for them.
It was a game-changer for me.
Even with their crazy schedules.
If you take three steps forward, you might take two steps back.
You're still going the right direction.
How they found success even beyond the scale.
The problems with dieting aren't the ones that I, as a doctor, thought were the biggest ones.
Number one, probably, is people feel lonely on a diet.
Well, you need that kind of communal support.
If we go to DrRoz.com, can we follow this diet, and can we, like, get the help that we need?
It's on DrRoz.com right now.
It's free.
Take advantage of it.
We're back talking with some of the media personalities and radio hosts who lost weight on the day-off diet.
I'm joined now by two of the biggest names in radio, my friends, Sean, Valentine, and Carolina.
Can you meet us?
Come over here.
Instead of talking in front of the big audience, I want you guys to feel at home.
So, I built you a little something.
My own rendition of a radio studio just for you.
I think it is so cool when you put those headsets on.
Do you do this to hear better or not to listen to me?
Be honest.
Both.
How do we look, guys?
Professional?
There you go.
Alright, Sean.
Yes.
Oh, are we leaving these on?
Okay, I'm used to it in the morning.
You don't have to do it.
I'm sensitive to this stuff.
You both get up at 3.45 in the morning.
You're running around.
I'm trying to make life work for you, and you've been able to find time to make this work when other programs haven't worked.
Sean, start us off.
What makes it work for you?
To me, you know, it just became a point where I said, I have to do it.
I'm going to make this work for me, and I wasn't walking around hungry, and I could feel the weight coming off.
So when I felt that success, I felt good about it, and then I had that day off coming up, and I watched for it.
Carolina, for you, big protein at breakfast was a changer for you.
Well, I think it was a game changer for me, actually, Dr. Oz, because previously I would always have, like, a bagel with, you know, cream cheese or something on it, and then I was never fully satisfied, but having that...
Protein in the morning, it just, I felt like my blood sugar, it was stable, and I didn't feel like I needed to eat things that came into the station, so I think that it really opened things up for me.
You know, interestingly, 25 grams of protein, which is the amount that you were taking, what we recommended, is what's been shown over and over again to not just cut down your appetite at the next meal, but throughout the day, it helps you reduce cravings.
Which is, again, one of the reasons you want any program that works.
I just haven't liked this one because it's free.
And it's based on all the advice experts have given me over the years.
But that's one of the reasons it works.
Because you don't feel like it's hard, so you can do it more easily.
There was another motivation for you, Carolina.
You posted this little Instagram photo.
I'm just going to put it up there so everyone can see it.
Oh, Dr. Oz!
It became a magical moment.
The rubber band trick.
And you're using this because your pants wouldn't fit.
I'd never seen this before.
Now, of course, everyone's reminding me about this iconic moment.
Okay.
Well, so let me explain this.
After I was pregnant, I was trying to fit into my jeans.
And so I would have to get a rubber band because my button wouldn't close.
And that was like a little trick that I used to do.
And so I embarrassed myself and told Dr. Oz about it.
We, of course, took a picture.
But now I can verify that I no longer need the rubber band.
That's fantastic.
Thank you!
I'm really only five pounds away from my goal weight.
You know, I think the thing about this diet is that you can be healthy, and you can eat all the right things, but you still have that one day to indulge, and I think that that's what Valentine and I were talking about.
That's what you looked forward to, but you don't ruin all of your hard work because of that one day.
I always felt like Monday, I was ready to get back on it.
Let's talk a little bit about the other big tactic that works, which is the non-starchy vegetables, which is unlimited amounts, right?
That's a good thing in any diet, to be able to eat as much as you want.
But it's hard.
And I know that a lot of folks confuse starchy and non-starchy.
Did you guys have any problems with that?
We were pretty clear.
Once I looked at your stuff, looked at the paperwork and realized what a starchy vegetable was and knew that I could eat all the cauliflower I want, once I knew what it was, I could meal prep it.
And then I was okay.
I'd come home for lunch and I'd have all these green peppers and red peppers and orange peppers and mix them in a bowl and put them together and I'd eat that for my salad.
And to me, it was like, all right, I'm doing okay and I'm not eating a pound of carrots thinking the carrots are, you know, non-starchy and they're not.
So we had to learn.
So, the thing that you do so beautifully is you simplify and make it accessible.
Non-starchy veggies, folks, 25 calories a serving.
Wow.
Starchy veggies, you mentioned one, but, you know, corn, peas, some of these you think are okay, they're actually not.
They're 80 calories a serving.
Of course, potatoes, sweet potatoes, they're not bad for you.
They're just higher in calories.
So, for the day of diet, I didn't want you to have too many.
Now, this is all nice and it's sort of window dressing for me because the reason I really brought you both here was to see what you would do in a truth tube setting.
Which is a little bit of a nerve-wracking.
I was told you weren't doing that today.
It was broken.
Well, you know, we did not record the part where we said we wouldn't do it.
We actually are going to do it.
Okay.
It's okay.
Once in a while, we'll trick our friends.
All right, perfect.
Let's do it.
Let's go see what happened here.
What do you mean, let's do it?
What is that all about?
Do I have to go first?
He's going to sacrifice the lady first.
You would.
Be back.
You know what?
Just for that.
Just for that.
Thank you.
You know what?
Before you do this, you know what I love about this is the diet.
I'm fitting in the pants that I didn't fit into before.
I used to love second day jeans where you'd wear them the second day and they fit better.
Stretched them out a bit, right?
Now I'm wearing these jeans on first day and they fit perfect.
I got some stuff before Christmas and clothes.
And they didn't fit.
There's no chance they're going to fit at all.
Now they fit.
Do they really?
Yeah, they do.
The pants fit.
You lost two inches.
How many, three inches?
How much is the loose, you think?
Probably two inches.
Probably two inches.
Yeah.
So I've said many times in the show that I love when people are proud of how they look.
It's part of being healthy and happy.
But there are things happening inside that I care even more about.
Sure.
So in your case, we're friends.
We've talked about this in the past.
There's some medical issues that I was worried about.
The first big issue that's out there is blood pressure.
Now, you've not been on medications for blood pressure.
No.
But your baseline blood pressure, I always give it to everybody, is okay?
It's 130 over 78. Which is not a bad number, but it's not the optimal number.
The optimal number would push that down around 10 points.
Okay.
Right?
So, we checked your blood pressure this morning.
Yeah.
And it is 122 over 68. Which is, that's like, that's the picture of perfection.
Yeah.
It's ideal.
It's the pressure I want everyone to be at.
This is a lot more beats to your heart.
Okay.
Right?
But the bigger problem for you is actually your cholesterol.
Because you're on meds for it, or you were on meds for it.
Yeah, I was on some meds for it, yeah.
But you're off them now.
I'm off them right now.
And you've been on the program for a little more than two months.
Right.
So this is a real live experiment with someone you all know.
I have a band-aid on my finger.
You did it.
You did it.
Took the blood.
Took a little tiny bit of drop of blood, and we learned your total cholesterol, not your total cholesterol in the best of all worlds.
Needs to be under 170. It doesn't have to be, but it's sort of nice if it is.
And on just the food you're eating and nothing else, no meds, your total cholesterol number exactly, 157. Which is a homerun.
Now, I told you all many times, I care about total cholesterol a little bit.
I care much more about...
The lousy LDL cholesterol, the way this stuff's carried.
Your lousy LDL cholesterol, again, ideally, in the best of all worlds, would be down under 100. It's been two digits.
Even if it just barely gets there, I'm happy.
I wouldn't treat you at 100, but if you get lower than that, then there's no question about not treating you.
And your LDL lousy cholesterol number was 96. Hey!
Homegrown territory.
What's up, buddy?
Homegrown territory.
Oh, I hurt your fingerprint.
That's awesome.
It's pretty cool to be off meds and not need them for a problem that could be life-threatening to your family.
Yeah.
Oh, no, that's amazing.
That's going to keep me alive a lot longer.
That's what I'm hoping for.
Now, I wish women cared about this, but they actually care about something that's much more...
Visible than this.
Carolina, you have success in an area that you think most women will, in the world, everybody, in fact, will want to hear about.
Exactly.
Now, I've been known to have dimples on my face.
I don't like them in this area, and I've noticed that the cellulite has reduced.
I lost a dimple.
I'm not even kidding you, because I notice all of them.
So that's what this diet has done for me.
You know, there's...
There's literally $2 billion a year spent on salite products.
I've tried them all, Dr. Oz.
The creams, I've tried the endermol, everything.
And honestly, I looked in the mirror and I was like, whoa, something's gone over here.
So, yeah.
Well, you shrink the fat cells, they're less visible.
It helps with the appearance.
It makes sense.
And it's something that folks are also writing to us about.
I love having you both here.
I love you sharing your stories.
They're beautiful.
Now, why don't you take a look at some of the biggest and the best in radio and how they fared on the day off diet.
Take a look.
Hi, Dr. Oz.
It's producer Bill from The John Jay and Rich Show.
I started the diet on Wednesday, January 6th, and I weighed myself that morning.
I was at 211 pounds.
And I'm proud to report that this morning I weighed 192 pounds.
I'm Shannon Beaver.
I'm a producer with The John Jay and Rich Morning Show.
After six weeks, I can finally fit into clothes that I haven't fit into for years.
So thank you, Dr. Oz.
Coming up next, she lost 16 pounds, then blew it on a tropical vacation.
It was bottomless.
Trina Braxton shares her advice for everyone who may have fallen off the wagon and what she did to get back on track with that day-off diet.
Coming up next.
Could carbs cause lung cancer?
A Dr. Oz investigation.
Even if you've never smoked a cigarette, it could be what's on your plate that makes you sick.
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
This is K-Mar from the hit reality show Braxton Family Values.
Was that all your junk food in there?
It wasn't all mine.
It was some Tawanda's and some Tracy's, but most of it was mine.
But it wasn't all mine.
And what's a thiccum?
Well, thiccum is something that makes you fat or gain weight.
Thiccums.
Little thiccums.
So they make you thiccums, so they're tall thiccums.
Thiccums.
Food that makes you thiccums.
I like that.
I've been using that for now on.
Thiccums.
Thiccums.
Little thiccums.
You know, siblings can be...
That's pretty tough.
Are you a supporter or are they trying to take you down?
Well, they can be supportive, but their support is kind of double-sided.
It's like, oh, Trina, you're losing weight.
I mean, you can lose about 10 more, but yeah, you look great.
And, you know, you've done our family a terrible injustice.
Why?
The last time we were here, you gave Tony a doctor's coat.
And now she really thinks she's a doctor.
She thought she was before.
Exactly.
She's like, even Dr. Oz said I could be a doctor.
I'm like, oh, Jesus.
Thanks, Dr. Oz.
Thanks.
Thanks for that.
I can loan you one if you want.
No thanks.
You don't want one?
Stay in my lane.
Stay in my lane.
So let's talk about the thickums and your lane and how this all happens.
So I'm going to take everyone through a pretty typical scenario that goes on day to day.
You start off strong on a diet, right?
Yes.
You're motivated.
You're psyched up.
You're following the plan.
You're losing weight.
And then you take one bite into a cookie and it turns into six.
Even look at the fettuccine alfredo and it turns into a bowl.
Absolutely.
And the next thing you know, you're completely off the wagon.
Yes.
I understand you fell off that wagon.
Oh my gosh, I fell completely off of the wagon and into the street.
When I first started, I did it for two weeks at first, and I lost 20 whole pounds.
And it was amazing.
A lot of weight loss.
Yes, it was a lot of weight loss.
And for me, I'm a stress eater and stress drinker.
So when I eliminated, you know, all the heavy foods, I eliminated the alcohol completely, even on my day off.
No alcohol at all.
It was, for me, water, water, everywhere.
I did strictly water and my lemon tea in the morning.
And it was 20 pounds.
And it was amazing how much alcohol and those heavy carbs affected my life and my body.
It was amazing.
So when you went off...
The program.
Yes.
How fast did you gain the weight?
Immediately.
Well, I went to Mexico, Dr. Oz, and, you know, it was non-stop, you know, drinking, non-stop.
Oh, I was fat, Jesus.
And, like, non-stop eating, because it was bottomless.
And after that, when I got back, I still stayed off of the wagon, and then I got back on.
And that's when I lost my 12 pounds again.
So...
You know, I don't want you beating yourself up about that.
80%, this is what the research says, 80% of people will gain all the weight back or even more.
I did.
When they go off a diet.
That was me.
But to be able to go back and keep at it and keep at it and keep at it is actually all that really matters.
Yes.
And there's a chance you may sleep up in the future, and it's okay about that.
I wanted to create a program, not just me, I think all doctors want to create programs where people can fall off the path and they can make a U-turn and get back on.
That's when you're driving in your car and you miss your turn.
You don't get berated by the GPS, right?
Doesn't call you a schmuck.
Doesn't make fun of you like your sister's mind, right?
Says at the next moment, make a U-turn and get back on the road.
Don't worry about it.
Absolutely.
And I was able to get back on because I knew it worked.
So you did something else that we don't actually talk about much in the program, which is activity.
But you did a very unique activity.
I did.
It's a dance move that I thought went out in the 80s.
But you had brought it back.
And apparently, I didn't know that you guys made it very popular all over the country.
Can you show it to us?
Yes, absolutely.
Come on, show it.
This is a Katrina workout.
Show us how you do.
While you're talking, here's some footage of people doing it.
Okay.
All you do is you walk in place.
You're walking away the pounds.
And I promise, guys, it works.
And you can use weight or not use weight.
You can add a little side-to-side to it if you need to.
And you can do it for a mile, two miles, five miles.
You know, and you just, it's a little ticker.
And you just walk away with those pounds.
You can do it right there in your room.
You can do it anywhere.
And what are you watching when you're doing this?
Well, I'll either watch the video, the walk away with the pounds, or I'll just watch television.
Watch Dr. Oz.
You know?
There you are doing it.
You're walking away.
I am proud of you for getting on board.
The day off diet is our biggest plan of the day.
You can get started with us today.
Follow these folks.
The entire plan is hosted on DrOz.com and for active family values.
Don't forget, it occurs for the fifth season in May.
- All right, here at that. - The making of a murderer case you haven't heard.
Sentenced to 35 years in prison for killing his roommate.
I did not kill my friend.
Can a new medical technology clear his name?
All new Oz.
That's coming up on Wednesday.
When Charlie Sheen announced in November he had been hiding his HIV positive status for years, media coverage and public interest exploded.
Now there's a new study, just released, that found that it set off the most Google searches on HIV ever recorded in the United States.
Researchers found almost 3 million more searches than explained the word HIV. And almost 2 million included prevention-related terms.
HIV symptoms, HIV testing, and condoms.
This is being called the Charlie Sheen effect by doctors and experts looking at this phenomenon.
It's important because one out of seven people with HIV don't even know they have it.
So I spoke to Charlie and he sent me a note that he wanted me to read to you.
He said, I'm truly humbled by the news surrounding what is deemed the Charlie Sheen effect.
After getting the word out, I now realize that two out of three people with HIV are inadequately treated, as well as countless others who are infected and never even get tested.
I also accept, he says, that with this powerful platform comes great responsibility for all of us.
I think Charlie said it all.
Thank you for joining us today.
