Time Text
Bread.
It's an American staple.
But something has gone wrong with bread in our country.
It has turned into a public health enemy.
How does it stay fresh for weeks?
And what's a better alternative?
We find out in our Food Truth series.
Plus...
I love beer.
This is my liquid gold.
I have a challenge for you.
No wine, no beer, no alcohol for one month.
Think you can do it?
That 30-day power plan to dry out.
Coming up next.
We'll save lives today.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh We are ready to get healthy.
Thank you.
Today's show.
Today's show is all about simple shortcuts to better your health.
The easy changes that can make a world of difference.
Like, for example, the bread you buy.
It seems simple enough.
It's an American staple.
But something has gone wrong with bread in our country.
It has turned into a public health enemy.
Take white bread like this, for example.
You buy it.
Don't you ever think how weird it is that this stuff stays fresh for weeks?
And frankly, it's kind of spongy and bland a lot of times.
It doesn't taste as good as it used to when I was a kid.
Today, we're investigating what's gone wrong with bread in America.
And don't worry, before we panic, the answer isn't don't eat it because I'm going to give you the healthy bread that even I approve of.
There are options out there that work.
Then, what goes better on bread than good old peanut butter?
Well, not just peanut butter anyway.
There's all kinds of nut butters out there.
It's hard to pick the right one.
So today, it's the shortcut to picking the best nut butter that won't blow your diet.
I'm also going to reveal the surprisingly simple health change you can make in January to improve your skin, your sleep, your mood, and help you lose weight all at once.
You're all going to want to stick around to find out what that is.
But first, What is the deal with today's bread?
To find out, I sent core team expert and award-winning food journalist Mark Shasker on the road.
This time, he's heading inside the bread industry to find out what's gone wrong with bread in America.
What is wrong with bread?
Why does it taste so bland?
Not only that, we've all heard it causes weight gain, diabetes, maybe even heart disease.
You know that old saying, it's the greatest thing since sliced bread?
Well, I'm starting to wonder, maybe sliced bread wasn't such a great idea in the first place?
To get to the bottom of how bread got so bland, I traveled to Wild Hive Farm to learn more about the main ingredient in bread, flour.
How are you?
So the key to really good breads is have really good flour.
Don Lewis grows and mills whole grains and then sells his flour to some of the best bakers in New York City.
How are modern wheats different from the wheats that you use?
Modern wheats are bred mainly for production only.
There's no focus on flavor or nutrient density.
You say that your flour has more flavor.
What does that mean?
It has the nuance of the grain.
Where it was grown, that flavor transfers into the flour.
And into the bread.
And then into the bread.
According to Don, it's also about how you mill it.
The vast majority of American wheat is milled with commercial rollers that remove the most nutritional parts.
Don, on the other hand, stone grinds his wheat.
Most of the bran remains in the flour, the germ remains in the flour, and that gives you a real nutritional fortitude.
My next stop on the road to Breducation?
A European-trained master baker.
But I didn't have to travel to Italy.
Nope!
I went to Eataly in New York City.
John Worson is the head baker at the beloved Italian marketplace, which is famous for its quality and selection of breads.
So John, what makes your bread different from the bread in the supermarket?
So our bread, when I mix the flour, salt, water and yeast, I will allow it to rise, ferment at least 10 hours.
So how long would the bread in the supermarket ferment for?
Maybe maximum 4 hours.
And what are the consequences of that?
A very gummy, dense, non-flagorful loaf of bread.
How does your bread taste different?
The act of fermenting bread is like aging wine.
The longer it ferments, the more flavor it'll gather.
Some people say that slow fermented bread has health benefits.
Yes.
Basically, when you let it ferment, it'll start breaking down the gluten structure and make it softer for our body to digest.
Can you show me how to make one?
Sure, of course.
Basically, all you have to do is combine your yeast and your water.
Mix that up.
We're going to put our salt in our flour.
We're going to mix that up.
And then add your yeast and your water.
And let me guess, mix that up?
Mix that up, yes.
We're going to cover it for two hours, put it aside.
After two hours, it's going to have risen just a little bit.
We're going to take it out.
We're going to shape it into a bowl.
We're going to put it back in the bowl and into the fridge.
For how long?
For 10 hours minimum.
For 10 hours.
So that's your long ferment.
Yes.
After 10 hours, we would take it out of the fridge and let it bake for 40 to...
Just put it in the oven.
Yes.
How hot?
How hot?
450 degrees minimum.
And you've made slow fermented loaf of bread.
You've probably made the best loaf of bread ever.
Oh my god, that looks amazing.
I cannot wait to take this back to the studio and show Dr. Oz.
Me too.
That bread makes me hungry, but it has gotten a bad rap, even though the whole grains we often advocate for.
So you say it doesn't actually have to be the case.
Absolutely not.
Nutritionally speaking, whole wheat bread is completely different from white bread.
But there's two problems with whole wheat.
The first is that in the supermarket you often see labels that say made with the goodness of whole wheat.
There's very often not a lot of whole wheat there, so that's misleading.
But the bigger problem is that so often those whole wheat loaves of bread are just made too quickly.
They're fermented too fast.
The dough isn't given enough time to develop flavor, so we're left with those spongy loaves of brown bread.
No one likes the way they taste.
That's given whole wheat bread a bad name.
But here's the thing.
We know whole wheat bread is healthier.
Shouldn't we make it taste the best it can taste so that people will actually want to eat it?
Darn right.
In fact, you brought this back.
Thank you, by the way, for not eating it on the way.
I would have done that.
It was tough.
Let's explain before we taste it.
What is it that makes this whole grain bread that you got from that bakery healthier and tastier than the white stuff we're buying in grocery stores?
You got a little demonstration for us.
Okay, let's do a little...
Wheat 101. This is a wheat kernel.
This is a wheat seed.
And you put the entire seed in whole wheat.
So these are the parts.
Around the exterior, you have the bran.
In the middle is the germ.
And then this stuff here is called the endosperm.
That's like the energy pack.
Mainly carbohydrates, little bit of protein.
All right, so let's go through the nutrient value of each and then explain again whole grain versus the white bread, what are we getting?
So the brand has?
Fiber.
That's all the good stuff.
Fiber, good for digestion, good for your body, absolutely.
The germ, which is like the baby wheat, right?
Yep, exactly.
That will grow into the new plant, protein, minerals, vitamins.
And then there's this stuff, again, I'm going to point it out to you.
All this white stuff in here, right, that's the endosperm.
Mainly empty carbs.
So when we get white bread, it is just the endosperm that we're getting?
It's mainly empty carbs, absolutely.
Alright, so then, if that's the case, and that's what we're dealing with here, then we have this whole grain, whole wheat concept that could be okay for us.
So, how do we go from the real wheat kernel, which is this, To the whole grain version of flour, which is how they made this with the right amount of sitting around and, as you mentioned, fermenting, versus this very floury stuff that becomes the white bread we buy in our stores, the spongy stuff here.
So if you grind the whole kernel and keep everything, you get this.
This is whole wheat flour.
This is what it looks like.
That will produce a loaf of bread like this.
But the vast majority of flour that we eat today and bread comes from white flour, where they've literally removed the germ and the bran.
They've removed the nutrients, and that's what we make white bread from.
You all think that they made white bread to make us heavy?
No.
There was a reason they made the white flour.
The shelf life of the white flour was a lot longer, but unfortunately it has side effects that shorten our life, we believe, especially if it put weights on us.
So, I would love you all to go to small bakeries, these little boutique places, and buy the whole grain, 100% whole grain or whole wheat bread, but I know it's expensive.
So, I want to give you an Oz-approved option from the supermarket.
This is what my family actually eats.
Come on over.
We go to the freezer section, right?
And then we get this stuff called sprouted grain bread.
A lot of people will see it says Ezekiel bread.
It's one of the brands.
And the best part of this is there are no preservatives in this.
So I know that what I'm giving our family tastes good and is good for them.
And you don't overeat this stuff.
You have a slice.
It's satisfying.
You can't just mindlessly eat it the way you would with white bread.
You want to pass out that bread loaf you brought back?
Yeah.
Do you have enough for the entire audience, you think?
You know, I'll do my best.
Everyone gets half a bite.
Measure it out, half a bite, and share.
Thanks to Mark Shaster.
I appreciate it very much.
All month long, you can find surprising truths about food on my Food Truth Tuesday hub on DrRaz.com.
I'll be right back.
Woo!
Let's take a look.
Up next, think you can't eat nut butters when you're trying to lose weight?
Think again.
There are many choices on the market that won't blow your diet.
We put them all to the test.
Nut butters with the healthiest fats that will suit any taste.
Next.
When someone calls and they're in need and they're in pain, you want to see what you can do to alleviate the pain and suffering.
I'm not going to be a doctor, but I can be a human being trying to support someone else who's going through hell.
I'm curious about what's going on in his life.
I don't know what kind of shape he's in.
He's been through so much, I doubt he spent a lot of time focused on his health.
Let's find out.
Well, good morning.
We talked about bread.
Now, what goes better with bread than nut butter?
Nothing.
I love it.
So, there's lots of nut butter to choose from.
How do you know which one is the right one for you?
I'm going to test the nutritional value, but I also care about the taste.
So, during the break, I had the audience put the top three healthiest nut butters on the planet.
to the nut butter and jelly sandwich test.
And the three biggest fans are here waiting in line to taste test their specialties and they're gonna talk about nutrient value as well.
Brittany, welcome to the show.
Hi, thank you.
So, you picked number one.
I did.
May I show it to everybody?
Yeah, absolutely.
Oh, there.
I can taste it because you already tasted it.
You picked cashew butter.
Did you know that what it was?
I'm not surprised.
I love cashew butter.
Like, I put it on toast.
I eat my apples.
I dip apples in it as a little snack.
And it's good for smoothies.
Yeah.
It's good for a lot of uses.
The question is, what's the nutrient value?
I know it's January.
A lot of you guys are on diets.
Let's see how cashew butter lines up in our health food test.
Are you ready?
One serving or two tablespoons is 190 calories, three grams of saturated fat, two grams of fiber, and five grams of protein.
So pretty reasonable.
So I think that's a good start.
I want you to remember those numbers, especially remember the 190 calories.
We're going to see if that changes much from nut butter to nut butter.
Sounds good.
You curious?
Very.
Do you know the answer?
I think.
Oh.
We're going to find out.
Come back to Brittany for the final.
Next, Tony Ann's here.
You picked a sandwich that has a different kind of nut butter in it.
You ready to show it to everybody?
Yes.
It is.
You're old fashioned, aren't you?
I am.
I'm a classic girl.
No added sugar, by the way, to yours.
So I've been told you've had a love affair with peanut butter for a long time.
I have.
What do you like about it?
Well, it began at a young age.
Grad school solidified the relationship.
Are you married?
I am not.
Yes, this is coming up in a peanut butter interview.
So we'll post your coordinates on our social media pages.
If you're dating peanut butter, these will be the vital signs of your date.
You have 190 calories, same exact amount as cashew nut butter.
Interesting.
Two grams of saturated fat, and then three grams of fiber, eight grams of protein.
So actually, interestingly, it has less of the bad stuff, which is the saturated fats, and a little bit more of the good stuff, the protein and the fiber.
So you're dating a good person.
I mean, come on, you know?
It took a little while, but, uh...
Brittany's jealous over there.
That's what's being played.
All right.
Oh, you know, one of the things I want to point out, the way I like to have my peanut butter is with honey.
Have you ever tried this?
No, I haven't.
This is actually my honey.
I have 70,000 bees, believe it or not.
You know why I have bees?
I found this out.
Well, I'm allergic to bees, so I didn't actually pick them out.
My wife and my son conspired.
They wanted to have bees in the property because that way they could, you know, pollinate the neighbor's flowers and trees and all.
So they got bees.
So I have to wear these, you know, very protective outfits when I go outside.
My son, unfortunately, is not allergic to them.
He doesn't mind it.
But I'm going to give you some of this.
See if you like this and see if you can put this together with your future spouse peanut butter.
Yeah.
Now you all know this.
You have real unpasteurized honey.
You actually can't double dip because otherwise your saliva will turn the honey bad.
But that's what the real stuff tastes like.
What do you think?
It's the real stuff.
That's right.
You can share some of that as well.
And the final nut contender, Al.
Yes.
You chose someone very interesting.
Are you ready?
You chose almond butter.
Oh my god.
Have you always liked almond butter?
No, not at all.
You've not liked it?
Mm-mm.
I hated it as a kid.
My mom made me eat it.
Your mother made you eat it?
Yeah, she would put, like, sliced garlic and, like, honey on toast whenever you're sick.
And she's like, it makes you feel good, but it tastes really bad.
She put garlic with almond butter?
Oh, my goodness.
Oh, is she here, your mom?
Yes!
I'm not even going to ask, Mom.
There she is.
She does look a little guilty over there.
All right, it's the moment of truth.
Let's see how the almond butter dies.
Compared to its competitors, 190 calories.
Again, guys, it's the same amount of calories.
They all have the same number of calories.
You don't worry about that in terms of a diet.
It's got one and a half grams of saturated fat, four grams of fiber, seven grams protein.
So again, it's a little less of that saturated fat, but I think they're all pretty good.
So I'm going to call it a head-to-head tie with a little nudge in favor of your mom's almond butter.
Just a tiny little bit of a nudge.
Okay.
The only problem I have with all nut butters is this.
How many of you guys have experienced this?
Ugh.
Is it the oil?
The oil on the top.
Don't you hate that?
I do.
You want a quick solution, a quick hack for this?
Yes.
Ha!
Turn it upside down.
So when you store it that way, the oil percolates to the bottom.
When you only start eating it, it looks like this.
Makes sense.
You don't get it all over your body when you open the jar for the first time.
Makes sense.
Good idea.
All these nut butters are approved on the Dr. Oz Day Off Diet.
Try them out.
You can find my nut butter guide on DrOz.com.
We'll be right back.
Next.
Straight from America's Test Kitchen.
Their very best shortcuts that will change the way you cook forever.
Dice, dry, and double the speed.
Oh, doesn't that smell good?
Amazing tricks to save you time and money in the kitchen.
Next. - Today's show is all about simple shortcuts to better health and at home better health So I asked executive food editor at America's Test Kitchen, Chef Julia Collin-Davison, to give you her very best kitchen shortcuts that will change the way you cook forever.
And the first one you argue is for helping to ripen fruit.
That's right.
Yeah, so if you have unripened bananas and say you want to make a banana bread or a banana cream pie, The easy way to ripen them is to lay them flat on a baking sheet, and you want to roast them in a low 250-degree oven for about 15 to 25 minutes.
And they'll get very dark and very soft.
And here, I'll show you what they look like.
They don't look dark, they look burnt.
They're not lookers, are they?
No.
But you can see they're quite soft.
You're going to have banana surgery.
Yeah, I'm going to want to see what's going on in here.
Yeah, you can see there'll be, and what's happening in the oven.
Oh my goodness.
Yeah, the starches are turning into sugar so they'll taste sweeter and be better for making banana bread.
It's a fascinating taste.
Isn't that interesting?
Yeah.
It has elements of both.
It's like a sweet, unripe banana.
All right.
Next tip.
You say you saved hundreds of herbs.
Yes.
You know, they're the destiny of the trash.
Yeah, I know these little things are expensive when you buy them in those containers.
So when they start to go bad, the easy way to dry them at home is to give them a quick wash.
You want to wrap them up in paper towel, and you're going to microwave this for about a minute or so until they get nice and dry.
And depending on your microwave and what kind of herb it is, it can take longer or shorter.
We're just going to put it in.
This is about a minute.
And they're going to come out nice and dry, and then you can save them for about a year.
For a year?
Yeah, dried herbs and spices last about a year.
Sure, but even after they start to go bad, it'll still work.
It'll still work, yeah.
They can't be rotten, mind you.
They have to be green.
We'll come back to 45 seconds.
Alright, you got something for onions.
Are you a crier?
I'm a very emotional person.
I'm in touch with my feminine side.
Good for you.
All right, so this is the most ubiquitous vegetable.
Everyone has to chop a lot of these.
So here's a fast way to chop it.
First of all, there's a stem end and then this end.
And you want to chop this end off first.
You want to slice through the root end.
I'll set this half aside.
You want to take the skin and the first outer layer and you want to peel them back.
And if you're new to cutting and you want to protect your fingers, you can use this as a little handle.
It's a holder.
Yeah, to keep your fingers out of the way.
And so...
Let's see, before you cut that, let's see if this worked or not.
All right.
I'm tempted.
Oh, doesn't that smell good?
It does.
You know what I smell in the audience?
It probably goes everywhere.
All right, so it comes out.
Is it dry?
Oh, they are dry.
Yeah, look at that.
You can just kind of crumble them right off into a container.
And again, these will store for up to a year.
So smart!
Yeah, it's a good tip, isn't it?
All right, so I got that smell in my nose.
That's good.
Oh, that's lovely.
Let's go back to our onions here.
Okay, so you want to keep your hands like a claw.
And you can hold on to this little handle if you like.
And there's three cuts you have to do to make a diced onion.
The first, you cut vertically this way.
And you don't cut all the way through.
You leave that root end attached.
Because you've got a bigger holder now.
Yeah.
And then you're going to collect your fingers on top and keep them out of the way.
Do one or two slices that way.
And then you can just go down.
And it's a nice chop.
And of course, this is left behind.
Where's my producer?
Dab my eyes.
I cry frequently, usually because of onions.
Blame it on the onions.
I like that.
My daughters say I don't cry enough.
The onions do make you.
How do you avoid getting your eyes all watered up like mine just did?
I wear contacts.
You wear contacts?
Yeah, contacts prevent it, but you know what?
What a smart idea.
You could wear goggles, obviously, but if you light a candle, the flames from the candle will help burn off the gas that makes you cry, or you could turn on if you have a gas stove, do it by the burner, or put a fan there and blow that gas away from your eyes.
And if they hurt, stick your head in the freezer.
I'm not kidding.
Sticking your head in the freezer really feels good.
You made that up.
There's no way!
No, I've had my head in the freezer before.
Get out of here.
How long do you keep it in here?
Just a second or two.
It's such a dumb image.
Now, this is a true show-off deal.
She only wants to use a power drill.
A power drill is a shortcut.
They're making pepper, so explain.
It's kind of a parlor trick.
It's very fun.
It's good if you have a holiday and you need a lot of fresh ground pepper.
So safety first.
Safety first, right.
The top of the pepper comes off.
Take the top of the pepper off.
All right.
All right, and then we're going to take the drill, and you're going to put the drill, you're going to tighten it right on that center piston, sort of.
Like that?
Let me show you how to do it.
Maybe I can help you a little bit.
All right, while you're doing that, I'll show everybody.
Watch.
You want to go very slow because you don't want to burn the pepper knot.
It works!
Isn't that cool?
And it's fun.
For first, this is Shortcuts from Chef Julie.
Go to DrRoz.com or check out her book, Kitchen Hacks.
We'll be right back.
Next.
Next.
It's the number one change that you should be making, but aren't.
It can transform your skin, weight, and mood.
Even reduce your risk of disease in just 30 days.
Take control of your health after the holidays.
Next.
Up all night obsessing over your to-do list?
We have the power plan to stop your mind from racing.
Plus, for surprising reasons, the scale isn't budging and how you can fix it fast.
That's coming up tomorrow.
It's the new year and today I'm giving you simple shortcuts to better health.
And this one, I'm really excited about.
It's the number one health change you should be making, but aren't.
It can transform your skin, your weight, your sleep, and your mood.
It can make you sharper and more productive in the short term.
And in the long term, it can kickstart you down the path to reduce your risk of disease.
You know what?
It only takes 30 days.
30 days.
How's that for a shortcut?
I'm talking about the January dry out.
This is a huge trend, big, in the UK. There are articles hailing it.
It's amazing benefits.
And it's headed to the US now.
So I want you to be the first to know about it.
And it's about to make a big change in your life.
Because all you've got to do is make a pledge to not drink any alcohol for just 30 days.
To detox and to help take control of your health even that much better after the holidays.
Well, I got these friends that are joining us today, Felicia, Keir, and Sarah.
They hang out together, and they think it's just what they need to start this year off on the right foot.
Take a look.
We've been friends for over a decade.
Getting together is like therapy for us, because, you know, with husbands and kids, you just need somebody to talk to.
It's girl time.
Cheers, bitchy!
So we always try to get together once a week and to watch our favorite show, Scandal.
We love the characters, and so we just have our wine.
Some beer, which is my favorite.
The liquid gold.
When we start drinking those drinks, we end up making unhealthy food choices.
My must-have for our Thursday nights is what?
Wings.
If I have to fry them myself on the premises, I will.
That goes hand-in-hand with my beer.
And I love my pizza.
The cheese, I love the mozzarella sticks.
I can have pizza every day.
We have our girls' night out, a couple of times a month at least.
Typical girls' night out would consist of drinks at the bar, appetizers, then we'll move over to a table, we'll order dinner.
Aside from Juana, I like sweet drinks, and those can really sneak up for you.
So it's fun to go out and drink and eat but there is a feeling that you get the next day that kind of leaves you feeling like you overdid it.
Every January we say we're gonna like do a detox and you know start off the new year right and you know we'll start off pretty good and then all of a sudden it just kind of like yeah it's fall off the wagon.
But I want to consciously try to try to do better this time.
Here's to making healthier choices in 2016. All right.
But for now We gonna drink.
For now.
Keir, Sarah, and Felicia are here and they want to give the dry out a try.
Court team expert Tia is here as well.
Tia Brown has the plan for them and all of you looking for a shortcut to a better health this month.
Now Felicia you're trying to lose some weight I understand.
Why is this the year to do it?
It's a new year.
I mean, I want to fit into a bikini by my birthday.
I want to look good and feel good like I used to.
Like you used to.
Yeah, I used to work out all the time and prepare my food, and then, you know, life got in the way.
I got busy.
And it's always...
Yeah, it's hard.
So, let's talk a little bit, Sarah, about how the wine relaxes you with the family and Kira joining as well.
Yeah, I mean, it helps us to get, we get together and we just relax and we talk about our husbands and laugh and...
Good things or bad things about your husbands?
Everything?
You're laughing at them, not with them.
That's why we need the wine.
My husband's Italian, so wine is a very big thing in the family, so I've acquired a nice taste for it, and I like to have it once the kids are asleep, just to feel nostalgic again, just to feel young again.
Tia, does this sound familiar to you, the story?
Absolutely.
And I think what Kira said hits it right on the head.
When you become a mom and a wife, you have a career, you have so many things that you're balancing.
And you want that girl time to kind of reconnect and remember who you are.
So it's just very important to make sure you're doing it in a healthy way.
So yeah, a lot of women love to get together, have a cocktail, a glass of wine, you know, kick some back, chill out.
Therapeutic.
So this program is not going to take away all that from you at all.
It will, for 30 days, limit the amount of alcohol, obviously, because you can't have any.
But it's not about alcoholism.
This is about casual drinkers who enjoy it for very medicinal reasons, we'll say.
What's the big idea behind this big program that's just taken over the United Kingdom?
England's all about this now.
Absolutely.
And it's really about detoxing your body, taking some time to reset.
We know at the top of the year, a lot of times people want to evaluate what's working, what's not working for them, and also to do a little cleanse.
So this dry out gives you an opportunity to say, you know what, I'm going to press pause, not permanently stop, but pause on drinking for a little while and see how it impacts my body, how it changes my life, and how it impacts my looks.
Because I know everybody wants to look their best.
Right?
You guys are hot mamas.
You can be hotter.
Yeah!
I want to be hotter.
I want to be hotter.
That's right.
So we're going to reverse the damage.
By the end of the month, here's the goal.
And this is what they found, actually, when they did the studies on this.
You drop your blood pressure about seven points.
That's a lot.
Yeah, that's good.
That's a lot.
And in the one month that they're doing these tryouts, they're losing three pounds.
Oh.
I'm down.
Yeah, I know.
You saw her whole face change.
I'm down, right?
So I've got one more little tidbit for you.
One more idea that can hopefully convince you this January dry out is the best thing since sliced bread.
Okay.
Not that you can know all the bread you want, buddy.
You found a new app, TM, that can show us how drinking changes the way we look.
Absolutely.
It's called BAM. And when you look at the results from this app, you're going to be like, oh my lord.
What it does is it calculates how many drinks you have per week, and then it shows the impact that it has over a long period of time.
Right.
So I think it's going to definitely be an incentive to change your habits.
We took the liberty of taking pictures of you while you were sitting there, and we put them up on this big monitor.
So come on back, which is just the way you are now, line up along that wall there, and we'll see what you think.
You guys are already sighing.
Well, you haven't seen it yet, and you're worried.
Right, right.
All right, now Keir's over there.
We'll start with you.
You enjoy, I understand, about six drinks a week.
Okay, yes.
That's not a crazy amount, by the way.
So, if you have six drinks a week, Kira, this is what you will look like.
Okay.
Right.
Okay.
Right.
Yes.
No.
Are we ready to make a change?
Are we ready to make a change, Kira?
You're not happy with that.
Okay.
Sarah, you get about five drinks a week.
Okay.
But you're a tad smaller than Kira, so here's how that affects you.
Take a look at your picture behind you.
Wow.
Are you liking what you see, Sarah?
No.
Okay.
Message.
No, no, no.
Message.
Right.
Message.
Felicia, how do you think they compare to their pictures?
What do you think about that?
Oh, they're beautiful now.
Those pictures are frightening.
Gotta go.
You want to see yours?
Not really.
Okay.
Don't be too quick to judge.
So just like a lot of moms, you get a glass of wine at night to sort of unwind.
Yes.
And here's what you'll be looking like.
Right.
Oh my goodness.
Again, this is all about your choices.
You can decide to drink less and you don't have to look like this.
What do you feel about seeing that picture though, Felicia?
I don't like her.
You don't like her?
Well, you don't have to become her.
It's about really taking assessment of your choices today and deciding what you're going to do differently to have a better balance of fun.
But also be healthy.
Absolutely.
Okay.
Folks who go on this January dry app, they feel moisturized.
They feel fresh.
They have a youthful, glowing skin.
And that's actually what you want.
So are you ready to see what could become?
Yes, please.
If you do it.
Yes, please.
Let's roll it, guys.
All together.
All together.
And they're...
Okay.
These are women who fought for their sexy.
Okay.
I like her.
That's right.
Much better.
I like that.
Much happier?
Big smiles?
Big smiles, yeah.
Everyone in the audience is happy.

Woo!
We all overindulge during the holidays, so today I'm introducing you to the January dryout, which could be just the perfect so today I'm introducing you to the January dryout, which could be just the perfect shortcut you need to transform Well, We're back with my core team expert, Tia Brown, with the 30-day power plant to dry out that anybody can do.
I've also got friends Keir, Sarah, and Felicia who want to try the January Dryout together to jumpstart a healthier lifestyle in 2016. They're still reeling from those photos before the break and what they might look like if they don't do it.
Kira, we're going to start with you.
The first part of this plan is to create a new social challenge.
So Tia, if you don't mind, explain how this works.
Absolutely.
So we know when we want to make a change, the first thing we need to do is change our habits.
So we're not saying don't hang out with your girls.
You need your girl time.
You need to have fun.
But you have to figure out something to do to supplement the drinking.
So we don't want to do things that make us want to go out and drink the cocktail.
So we have a great list of some options of things you can do.
So tell me, what day do you guys usually hang out?
We have a $2 Tuesday.
$2 Tuesday.
That's about drinking.
They're branded days of the week.
$2 drinks on Tuesday.
Okay.
So what's an option that we could do that you would enjoy doing?
All right.
I would say on a Tuesday would probably be...
We got painting class spa, nice karaoke.
Let's keep it simple because it's early in the week so we can do board games.
We can do board games.
Right.
So this is a great alternative to drinking.
So we're not going to go to the bar.
We're going to go someplace where there are no drinks.
No drinks.
And we're going to hang out and play board games.
Okay.
Is that something fun for you?
Sure.
Okay.
And what's another day of the week that you would normally have?
Do the roller skating disco.
No question.
Do that.
Roller skating disco.
Friday nights are good for us.
Okay.
So Friday is a very sexy night.
It is.
So we want to think of something sexy and fun to do with your girls.
Right.
And that you will enjoy.
Because that's the thing.
Again, it has to be something that you will enjoy.
Something that you plan on continuously doing.
And that will make you happy.
Well, I love to roller skate.
I am a skater.
I'm a skater.
I love to skate.
So that way we're working out and we're hearing music.
Not at the disco, but at the skating rink.
And that's all it is.
We'll come back in a second.
Alright, let's talk about...
A replacement for that desire we have in our mouths for something that's like the alcohol you put in.
We're going to make a mocktail drink, and Sarah, you're going to do this with us.
Why do you like the concept of a mocktail?
So, I love mocktails because one of the biggest reasons we like drinking is because it feels very sexy.
Right?
You know, you get the buzz from the alcohol, but you also get the sexiness from the glass, right?
And I know you guys love scandal.
Right.
So this is a great opportunity to still have your sexy girl time and make the drink at home.
Sounds good.
No alcohol.
And I know also health is a big issue for you.
Diabetes runs in your family.
It runs in my family.
You can control what you're drinking, how you're feeling, and what you're doing.
So we're going to take a glass.
This is a soda sangria.
This is a soda sangria.
You get your $2 Tuesdays.
Here's your soda sangria.
Right, right.
And so the first thing we'll do is put a little bit of muddled fruit in.
And you can put as much as you want.
Again, this is all healthy stuff, right?
And then we can put some ice in.
I'll do the ice, you do the soda.
And we have the soda that's already open.
Jeez, look at this thing.
It's a piece of sculpture here.
Forgive my hands.
Pretend it wasn't my hands that did that.
We can put some soda in.
Put some soda?
Yeah.
And put a little lime in there.
Yeah, stir it up a little.
Stir it up a little.
Look, it's looking very sexy already.
You can put a little bit of mint as a garnish on the top.
That wasn't very sexy the way I put it in.
Here's my sexy version of it, by the way.
Oh, thank you.
And then the lime.
I feel sexy already.
Squeeze some in.
And no alcohol, which is the nice part because...
All right, this works.
We're going to erase those pictures we had before.
Thank you.
How does it taste?
Mmm, it tastes really good.
I like that.
I do like this.
Beyond the taste of this, at the end of the day, when you're a little tired and you want to hang with your friends, There is more to the alcohol than just the alcohol.
Absolutely.
So what do you do in place of that?
It's about relaxing.
And so the thing is, you want to find, in addition to drinks, what is practical for you to unwind.
Everybody has a different schedule.
Everybody has different resources.
If it's having a mocktail, it might be great.
If it's tea, that might be good for you.
If it's going online and looking at different websites or reading a book or taking a walk, the goal is that you want to find something that's a healthy replacement that you can do consistently and that's practical for your schedule.
We can do it.
Keep drinking that mug, right?
Yay!
And I finally go to Felicia.
So Felicia, we saved you for last because part of the issue we're going to deal with here is the money because you actually have alcohol savings, right?
Cash savings that you can now treat yourself to a little prize with.
Yeah.
Tia?
Absolutely.
Now, whether you're going out and spending maybe $7 when you're dining out for a cocktail, and that depends on the city, or if you're buying bottles for the house, you know, you can spend $7 to $70 on a bottle.
And at the end of the month, it adds up to a lot.
So the goal here is to say, you know what, as a reward for my discipline, I'm going to treat myself to something.
I like that.
That's right.
And who doesn't like shopping or splurging, right?
We all deserve a little splurge, right?
Especially if you do that well.
How much money do you think you spend on alcohol a month?
Honestly, I don't know.
If I had to come up with a number...
But don't even guess.
Tell you what, I got a little alcohol calculator here.
I took the liberty of working it out for you.
So I figured out, you guys have about, each of you, 10 drinks a week, right?
Which you're buying with your friends.
I'm being conservative here, right?
Cost per drink, $7.
That's a good price, by the way, because you don't have those $2 Tuesdays too often.
And then four weeks and a month, of course, that's $280 saved, and I'm being super conservative here.
So, Sarah, come on.
Keira, come on and join us if you don't mind.
Did you think about how much money you were spending looking at it on the board?
It seems like an astronomical amount.
And what else you can do with that money?
Yeah, my husband would kill me.
So, I decided to do something.
Here's $280.
Wow.
Felicia's picking up a tab from now on.
This is exactly what you'll be getting back.
Everybody who does this little dry out in January, figure out how you're going to spend the money.
You can plan it all month long because you won't be spending it on the alcohol.
It says spend it on things that are good for you.
That's right.
You can find the whole plan on DrRoz.com.
I'll be right back.
Coming up next, if you haven't already started a day off diet, now's your chance.
And we're going to make losing the weight even faster.
Celebrity trainer Joel Harper shows us how.
The one exercise anyone can do to jumpstart your weight loss.
Coming up next.
Up all night obsessing over your to-do list?
We have the power plan to stop your mind from racing.
Plus, for surprising reasons, the scale isn't budging and how you can fix it fast.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Yesterday we launched the Day Off Diet and millions of you have already downloaded the plan So proud of all you're getting done.
This diet was designed so you could lose weight without exercise.
So exercising is not mandatory.
Say it again.
David, applauding.
You don't have to exercise.
But we did this great American weight poll that we've been talking about, and over two-thirds of you actually want exercise to be part of any weight loss plan.
And because of that, and I'm proud of that, too, because it's good to have exercise, of course, for lots of reasons besides losing weight, I asked celebrity trainer Joel Harper to show you the one exercise to jumpstart your weight loss.
Are you surprised by that data that even though they don't have to get the exercises, they actually want to have exercise?
Not at all, because exercise complements a weight loss program.
Look at it like flossing your teeth.
You don't just brush your teeth, you floss them.
And you do a little bit every single day.
You don't just brush your teeth on Saturdays, you do it throughout the whole week.
You know, people like to work out.
They really like it once they get in the routine of doing it, because you know what?
They feel better.
At the end of the workout, they always feel better from doing it.
And the only person that benefits from a workout is yourself.
So that's why you get people to really work out and use your body as your gym.
Come on over here.
You've got the one exercise to jumpstart our weight loss.
And it looks sort of simple, but go ahead.
This is you outside doing it for us.
It's called Knee Bounces.
It's really efficient.
It's using your body as your gym.
You want to come down to all fours so your hands are under your shoulders.
That's the more advanced version there.
And you just want to bounce one inch up and one inch down.
And it's really efficient and it's really effective for all ages.
And as you get harder and harder, you want to make it harder by working with my burn scale.
Zero means you don't feel it at all.
Ten means you really feel it.
So an exercise like that, you want to work To eights, nines, and tens.
That's what uses your time efficiently and you get results quickly.
How many times a week do you do it?
You want to do it every single day.
That exercise you want to do every other day, but it really helps with weight loss.
Okay, and what about the stretches you keep bragging that I've got to pay attention to?
Exactly.
Every time you do an exercise, you want to immediately stretch.
Exercise, stretch.
Exercise, stretch.
This is called the quad pulls.
So you take your leg and you just gently grab that foot and pull it all the way back like I'm doing here.
And what it does is it opens up the muscles that you just work.
Because you want to leave a workout feeling energized and tension-free.
So when you exercise, you strengthen the muscles and then you want to stretch it out.
You open them back up.
And that's how it works.
Exercise, stretch.
Exercise, stretch.
Thank you, my friend.
I'll see you this weekend.
Good.
Those exercise plans will be on DrRoz.com.
And remember, you're just in time to join the day off diet.
All the information you need is on our website.
And for bonus tips and recipes, make sure you check out this month's issue of The Good Life Magazine.
We'll be right back.
Is This Returns?
Yes, how can I help you?
I'd like to return these extra pounds.
They don't look good on me.
You're returning bills?
Store credit's fine.
Can I exchange this exhaustion?
I think I'm gonna need a little help.
I can help.
All January long, I'm giving you my brand new power plants.
I can help with the exhaustion or losing weight or fixing your finances to make 2016 your best year yet.
I'll see you next time.
Now, I want to show you a shortcut that you cannot live without.
Now, I love adding pomegranate seeds to my oatmeal, my salads, and lots of the foods I eat because they're so high in antioxidants.
And, you know, I love them and you love them.
We talk about them all the time, but they can be a real pain.
That's why so many of us avoid them, right?
It takes time to get these little seeds out of the side here.
And then don't forget spilling it all over the counters, getting on your clothes, your fingers are stained.
Am I speaking for everybody here?
Yeah.
So here is the little hack, a shortcut that'll get you there.
First, step one.
You cut with a nice, sharp knife that a surgeon might use, through a pomegranate, but not all the way through, just through that fibrous capsule that's on the pomegranate.
That way you won't spill juices out.
See, it's still nice and clean.
Then you twist it and break it like that.
All right?
Now!
Here's the important part.
Hold the pomegranate over the bowl in one hand.
Hold it firmly.
And then this is the therapeutic part.
Start whacking the back of the pomegranate.
And as you hit the pomegranate, you're going to see those seeds start popping out.
They pop.
And the more you pop, the more you can think about what you can do to your spouse.
What if your kids are at home all the time?
Or maybe are they right now?
Aren't they helping?
Notice my clothes are clean.
I like to do it underwater.
If you do it underwater, it's completely everywhere you go.
The only thing is catch your pomegranates in a little bed when you're done.
But that's what you have to do at home as well.
Both these things are straightforward and simple.
I put lots of time savings hacks on this season on my Facebook page so you can share it with your friends.
Happy it starts at home.
See you next time.
