Pegan Diet Explained: How to Reduce Inflammation in 10 Days | Dr. Oz | S6 | Ep 141 | Full Episode
| Copy link to current segment

Time Text
Today on Oz, NASCAR's Danica Patrick on living life in the fast lane.
Racing is tough and it stresses me out.
If you're racing in that car and you have to go pee, what do you do?
How she speeds past stress to make it to the finish line.
Plus, it's a new method of eating that's gaining huge buzz.
It's called peeing.
It helped her.
I had so much energy.
See if it can help you.
Coming up next on Oz...
Welcome all to the show.
Thank you very much.
Alright, it's a new method of eating that's gaining huge buzz and momentum.
It's called PEGIN. And people are saying it may be the new paleo.
Followers say it's a one-two punch.
The best of two worlds for stopping down chronic inflammation and reversing disease.
Dr. Mark Hyman, the creator of the PEGIN plan, says anyone who tries this will see a change in just 10 days.
Welcome back to the show as always.
So you call this the pegan plan.
That sounds like it's an embarrassing issue.
What does pegan mean?
It's a combination of paleo and vegan.
Which sound completely different and opposite ends of each spectrum from each other, but they actually have more in common with each other than both of them do with the standard American diet.
And the foundational principles for each are sort of the same.
Whole, real, fresh food, free of processed ingredients, free of added sugars and carbs and additives and chemicals.
And they both can be done well and be healthy and have health benefits like reversing diabetes and Lowering cholesterol, losing weight.
But combining the best of both, you actually get all the health benefits and you get to have not such a hard to do diet and actually has even more benefits.
So I understand why vegan approaches work.
We talked about them.
Paleo makes sense.
And there's some benefits and disadvantages to each.
So when you put these two together to make pegan, what specifically are you changing?
What makes it better than either one of those alone?
Well, you know, doing a paleo diet can be hard to eat like a caveman in the modern world, and being vegan can be kind of alienating, and they're often real restrictive.
When you combine the best of both worlds, you get to not do the bad things.
For example, if you're a paleo, you could eat like a giant ribeye every day and not any vegetables.
And bacon and pork loins.
Right, right.
Exactly.
Pork rinds.
Or if you're vegan, you could be eating potato chips and soda all day, and that's a vegan diet.
How many potato chip vegans are there here?
They exist.
They become carbarians.
They do, right.
So when you kind of look at what the healthful principles are both, you combine them, it's less restrictive, has more health benefits, And it, you know, just that you enjoy a wide range of foods that are real, whole fresh food.
Let's explain why this is so important.
I'm going to say, what I love the most about your idea is it closes off those loopholes.
It does, yeah.
The challenge is sometimes to have a program that's robust and full and fun, but not going to allow you to do things that really sabotage yourself.
So walk me through this issue of inflammation, which is the core of this concept.
So we know, we've talked about this before, but inflammation is caused by two things.
One is our high sugar processed diet.
It's a firing that gets rid of, right?
It's inferno in you.
Exactly.
Huge inflammation.
So it gets rid of all the sugar, It's a very low glycemic diet, and also it gets rid of all the inflammatory foods, like processed foods, dairy, gluten, and too much meat, refined oils, all of which drive inflammation in the body.
And when you eat this pagan way, you reduce the inflammation, And you end up actually creating all these health benefits and you feel better.
So it sort of calms down.
Quiet's the inflammation, right?
Let's all do it together.
That's what we're doing here.
Calms down the inflammation.
Because you know stress causes weight gain, everybody, right?
But you can have stress inside your body that's not because you're mad at somebody.
It can be stress caused by the food.
That's right.
That's exactly a great point, man.
Because what we know now is if you eat a lot of sugar, it raises adrenaline in your body.
It raises cortisol, even if you're not mentally stressed.
So choosing what you eat actually affects your stress response.
So I asked Dr. Hyman to make some simple rules for us today so we can understand what pagan eating really does.
He does pagan eating.
I know he's well versed in this.
So you get the best of both worlds.
The first pagan rule is to use meat as a condiment.
Yeah, I actually call it a condom meat, right?
Instead of condom meat.
He's a punster, too.
We need to downsize our animal consumption.
It's good for us and the planet.
And we need to upsize our plant consumption, which is why I call it vegan.
It combines both those ideas.
So you look at this plate.
It's full of vegetables and a little bit of steak on the top.
And here it's a little bit of chicken instead of a condom meat.
And it has all the benefits of getting adequate animal protein, and you want to get the good protein, not the feedlot beef and the factory-raised farmed chicken.
You want the ones that are sustainably raised with low levels of antibiotics, hormones, and chemicals in them, and you want to eat good quality food when you have it, and so you don't need to eat as much, and you can do it affordably.
Alright, second big rule has to do with beans.
We know beans are healthy, but you actually say no more than half a cup of beans and specific issues of beans that most of us don't know.
Right, so beans can be good.
They're full of fiber, protein, minerals, but they also can be starchy.
And they can, for people who are diabetic, can cause high blood sugar.
And for people who have digestive issues, they can be hard to digest.
So I recommend eating less starchy beans, not such big ones like azuki beans or lima beans.
Not the big ones.
The small ones.
The small ones.
That's right.
And about a half a cup a day and see how you feel on it.
By the way, I get lots of gas with beans, which doesn't bother me as much, but I completely understand why I would mess people with it.
Exactly.
And the beautiful thing about a pecan diet is you can choose.
You can not have beans.
You can have beans.
You can have grains.
You can not have grains.
You can have...
You can have less meat.
It's all okay as part of this wide-ranging variety that you can have as part of a vegan diet.
But no chips.
No chips and soda.
Speaking of grains, low glycemic grains are allowed at only half a cup a day.
Right.
Again, grains can be a healthful food, but if you overdo it on grains, it jacks up your blood sugar and it can create inflammation.
So we get rid of gluten grains, which are inflammatory, And we use really powerful specialty grains like black rice, also known as the emperor's rice, or forbidden rice, and it's like the blueberries of rice, full of antioxidants, lower glycemic load, lots of minerals, and quinoa also has more protein than traditional South American food, and it's also Very tasty and yummy.
And again, half a cup a day is a great way to incorporate grains in your diet.
Let's take a step back here.
Now, we've been giving you the amounts here because it doesn't matter.
So half a cup.
I'm going to quiz you all.
What does a half a cup of cooked grains look like?
So is it the size of a grapefruit?
Is it the size of a light bulb?
Size of a golf ball?
What do you guys think?
Yell it out.
A lot of folks saying golf balls.
I'm not that strict.
The actual amount is about a light bulb.
And it depends on your size, too.
If you're Shaquille O'Neal, it's about the size of your palm.
If you're A five-foot-two little lady, it's about the size of your palm.
So you can use your own palm as a guide to the amount of food that is a serving, which is a serving of rice, a serving of beans, a serving of meat.
The size of your palm is a good indicator.
Which you can hold in your palm.
It's like the size of your, yeah.
Because you can kind of pile it up, right?
You don't want to pile it up.
He's like an accountant now.
He's like an accountant.
All right.
Eggs are a big opportunity here, and a lot of folks are confused by eggs.
We keep changing the rules.
Yeah, so confusing.
Eggs are good.
Eggs are bad.
What do you believe?
Like, it's confusing, right?
Well, eggs, it turns out, are not so bad for you.
And they are not linked to heart disease.
And in fact, they're full of protein.
They're a great source of choline, which is great for your brain, vitamins and minerals.
So you don't have to go for the egg whites.
You go for the whole egg.
In fact, the new dietary guidelines have eliminated cholesterol as something we should restrict from our diet anymore.
So eggs have been exonerated.
Get it?
He'll be here all week.
Try the corned beef.
Let's talk about how this works in reality.
A patient of that time is joining us.
Her name is Robin.
How are you, Robin?
Hi.
Nice to see you.
So she's been peaking for six months.
So what made you decide to move in this direction?
Well, I've been gluten-free for 10 years, thanks to Dr. Hyman, and dairy-free, and I still was not feeling well.
I still was bloated and had reflux, and I wasn't regular in the way that your show loves to talk about.
So I said, what should I do?
What should I do?
So I decided to go vegan and see if that helped.
And did it help?
It made a world of difference.
My reflex completely disappeared.
I had so much energy.
My brain fog started going away, and I was regular and rolling.
And the beautiful part about this, you can eat a ton of food.
Look at Robin's lunch.
It's a giant plate of vegetables that you can eat as much as you want of.
You can fill up on that.
It's unlimited refills, and that's because these are very low in starch, high in fiber, lots of vitamins and minerals.
It's super nutrient dense.
As opposed to filling up on a lot of starchy grains and beans or a lot of sugar and processed food.
Give me an idea quickly.
So this is your breakfast?
This is my breakfast.
What I would do, I mean, I'm a working mother of two, so you don't have a lot of time to prepare things.
On Sundays, I make a huge vat of roasted vegetables, anything you want, pretty much everything in here.
I love Brussels sprouts and all of that.
And I put them in muffin tins, and I pour, I use six eggs and then six more egg whites, and then I bake them.
And you have these little egg cups that you can just grab on the go.
So I have this for breakfast.
Yeah, little egg muffins.
Like a new Egg McMuffin.
I am very proud of what you've done.
Thank you very much, Dr. Hyman.
Thank you.
Wonderful concept of vegan diet.
If I do all of Dr. Hyman's vegan rules on DrRogs.com, I'll be right back.
- Woo! - Coming up next, she's the most famous woman in a male dominated sport.
The first lady of NASCAR, Danica Patrick, is here.
But when she's not racing around the track at top speed, she's putting her health into high gear.
Coming up next.
All new Oz.
She wants to give them unhealthy food.
This family can't stop fighting.
You're ridiculous.
He has type 1 diabetes.
Why would you give him candy?
Dr. Oz has what they need.
A step-by-step plan to resolve family conflict.
That's coming up tomorrow.
She's the most famous woman in a notoriously male sport.
She's known for being fast, edgy, and the picture of good health.
Please welcome the First Lady of NASCAR, Danica Patrick.
How are you?
I'm good.
I finally get that value.
Well, I love this show, so don't you guys?
I mean, I seriously, I put it on and just feel like I get very educated.
And I'm a visual learner, so when you get all the props going, and we were just backstage talking about how many odd props are here, like balloons and odd air balloons and all kinds of weird stuff, but it helps me learn.
Well, I love that.
Well, so do I. You know, people look at you and they think, my goodness, she's been able to do so much in so many different ways.
Things that you'd never think a woman could do.
I'm just gonna say it out because I can't speak around that reality.
But it's not just about racing cars.
Here's a picture that she posted on Instagram.
Now, look at this post.
That, I think, is pretty cool.
It's downright sexy.
So, are you able to do moves like that because you race, or does that kind of exercise allow you to race?
Well, I would say that it helps me race.
I think that the most important things in a car are, well, the most important things in life are probably strength, flexibility, and endurance.
So, especially in a race car, like when there's an impact, you know, you want to be flexible so that your body doesn't break.
It bends, right?
Is that good?
Am I doing the right thing?
No, you're doing absolutely the right thing.
And I think that it really helps my mind, too, more than anything, because...
I feel like we're so limited by what we think we can and can't do, or I suppose can't do.
If we think we can do it, we will.
So, you know, testing yourself and like that was a pose that I hadn't tried in so long and I feel like I'd always be too afraid in class to try it.
So I kind of like doing stuff at home because it allows me the chance to fall and not look like a total idiot or not hit somebody because that's also very mean.
But in your day job when you fall, it's pretty risky.
What is the mindset that's required to race around that track at 200 miles an hour?
It's a focus, but it's kind of like a blank focus.
You're not really trying to do anything in particular.
You're receiving.
So you're feeling the car.
You're feeling what it needs.
You're looking at the traffic.
You're looking at the situation ahead of you, behind you.
You're trying to manipulate either one of them.
So I feel like you're just kind of receiving a lot.
So I guess it's like being in the zone, you know?
So it's the emotional part of racing I get completely.
It's the physical part that is surprising to a lot of folks.
It is really, really a sport.
How many calories do you think you burn in a race?
Well, they've put heart rate monitors on drivers before and we basically have like a running pace, a running heart rate.
So it's like a marathon every weekend.
So you have to stay hydrated.
So I really should not stop racing because I'm going to have to work out so much more.
I do 38 marathons a year then, apparently.
It's a personal question, if you don't mind.
This is Dr. Cheryl.
If you're racing in that car and you have to go pee, what do you do?
That leads me to a good question, actually.
You can go.
You can?
And actually, I have thought about it before, but I can't.
Because, like, ever since I was two, I've been trained to not pee my pants anymore.
Is that what drivers do, though?
They can.
There are some that do, I think.
Yeah.
But it's kind of, I just, I don't, I got to sit back in that seat again, and I don't really want to sit here and...
You probably don't actually have to pee when you're racing because you're sweating so much.
Very rare.
I mean, you do have to pee every now and again, but it's always holdable.
So you should actually sort of have that urge by the time you're done racing.
And if you're not well hydrated, that's not going to happen.
I do a lot.
Actually, I pee as soon as I get back to the bus, like I have to go to the bathroom.
It's the next one that might take a while.
But yeah, I do try and keep ahead of it.
One thing I've always wondered about race car drivers, because you guys racing and jostling with each other, and I have a problem, you all know this, with road rage.
I just go psycho.
I do too.
You have road rage?
I like an infinite amount of road rage, yeah.
My boyfriend, he does the same thing that I do.
We're both cup drivers.
And he's like, man, if you could just take that aggression to the racetrack, that would help you so much.
I do.
I get super fired up when I'm driving.
I feel like I can teach everyone just a little lesson on the road.
I might cut them off a little and be like, maybe they'll think twice about hanging out in the left lane, going the speed limits.
Can you imagine Donika Patrick is driving by you, pulling you over.
All right, I want to turn to an important health mission Donika wants to share.
She wants to get this message across, and I love it.
I share it as well.
She set up an interesting hidden camera experiment so you would never forget this little lesson.
Take a look.
Hi, how are you?
What can I get for you today?
I'm going to go fish tacos.
Fish taco salad?
Great.
Yeah.
Um.
Yes, sir.
What, uh.
We're showing people what the future looks like if you don't take care of your mouth.
Okay.
You know what my mom always said when I was growing up?
All goes to the same place.
What?
Alright.
We won't really need forks anymore if we don't have teeth.
Don't you love their faces?
I mean, if y'all would have smelled what some of that was like, like when you got onion in some of those foods and you'd pour it out.
And then I loved when I asked them, because, you know, we're doing this for hours, you know, so I'm coming up with all the ironic things I can ask them.
So I'm like, chunky or smooth?
And some people answered chunky.
Oh, God.
Can you imagine?
So dental, how's the reason you're doing it?
Why is it such a passion in yours?
Well, I just love it when I have partners that have such great missions.
And when I first met the folks at Aspen Dental, I was taken back by the fact that it wasn't a conversation about how they're going to grow their business and how they're going to use me.
It was like, how are we going to help people?
And they just have an incredible mission.
And I'm happy to be the platform for it and the voice for it.
And they created the Mouthmobile, which is a dentist's office on wheels that goes all over the country.
They gave over a million dollars in free oral care last year.
Good for them.
Good for them.
It's going again this year.
It's just an incredible mission.
Over 150 million people didn't go to the dentist last year, which is just a bad statistic.
And there's another one, too.
It's kind of car-oriented.
One in five people would rather fix their car than...
Pain in their mouth.
Oh my goodness.
Right?
Like, that's sad.
And the thing is, too, is that, I mean, like, I've had a wisdom tooth come through.
And it's not like, I didn't proactively get it taken out.
So, all of a sudden, now it's like an emergency.
And there's really, I feel like things with your mouth tend to just be an emergency when they go wrong.
So, stay ahead of it.
It not only causes pain, but it's money, too.
So, you know, it's just, and it's overall health.
When we do free clinics, that's one of the biggest untapped needs of a lot of folks.
So I always thought we'd end with a little competitive endeavor.
Okay.
You ready for this?
I'm always ready.
We're going to harvest our road rage.
Come over here.
I get a little nervous because I like to win.
Well, we're going to find out.
I want to challenge you to a race.
Come on over here.
Now, you're good with cars.
I'm good at running.
So we're going to combine them.
Oh, I'm good at running, too.
Are you good at running?
Yeah.
Oh, this is going to be good then.
So here's a little scooter for you and a razor.
There's yours.
Now, there's yours.
Are we, uh, am I gonna drive this thing?
You're gonna drive yours.
Oh, you're taking your shoes off.
I mean, they're comfortable, but they're not that comfortable.
All right.
All right.
Hold that.
Hold that.
Hold this, then.
Oh, okay.
What?
You're going to take your shoes off, too?
I'm much faster barefooted.
All right.
Good, because I think your socks have less grip.
All right.
Are you ready?
You're going to follow this white line around.
There's a finish line over there.
Follow the yellow brick road.
Follow the yellow brick road.
Ready?
Go!
Oh, my gosh!
Oh, she's behind!
Oh, I love winning!
Oh, I love winning!
Oh, she's playing at the back!
It's a...
Oh!
She did it!
The unbeatable Danica Patrick!
Very competitive.
I love beating you.
Good luck to you.
We'll be right back.
Next, harsh lighting and hateful mirrors.
The dressing room can be a painful place for many of you.
Learn how to choose clothes that help you look good and feel good about yourself.
The rules to never feel fat shamed in a dressing room again.
Coming up...
Hey Dr. Oz, it's Caroline Manzo sending you big hugs and love from New Jersey to congratulate you on your 1,000th episode.
We're so happy for you, Mehmet.
I'm only allowed to call you Dr. Oz.
Today we are taking on fat shaming.
And sometimes fat shame doesn't come from the outside, it comes from ourselves.
Now I'm shocked to find this out.
Men have no idea.
But the dressing room is a painful place for a lot of you ladies.
Is that right?
Not a good place to be.
So I asked Denise Caldwell, fashion and beauty expert, known as the Curvanista, to be here.
Thank you.
I brought you your own little dressing room.
Why is this a hot spot for shame for so many women?
Oh my gosh.
You know what?
First, let's start with the lights.
And then you want to pick things that may have looked great on the mannequins, but they don't look great on you.
So then you start to put pressure on yourselves.
And then you get this up.
Can I help?
Are you ready?
Exactly.
So Denise has three rules to find clothes that celebrate your curves so you'll never feel fat shame in the dressing room again.
So let's get to the rules.
The first one deals with someone who feels ashamed over the way certain shirts fit them.
So Andrea is joining us from the audience.
She acknowledges having this problem.
How are you, Andrea?
Thank you for being here and thanks for talking about this.
So before the curvy needs to help you, describe the scenario.
What's bothering you about the way you have to put shirts on?
Well, my issue is that I'm a curvy girl, but I have a smaller waist, and then I got Olga and Helga here.
Olga and Helga.
Yeah, that's their name.
And they always like to poke out when I'm trying to find a professional shirt, as you can kind of see.
It's the best I can do today.
So it's very frustrating, and I just want to look nice, and it's very hard to find a well-fitting shirt.
Denise, take it away.
What is the rule?
Absolutely.
First rule is make sure you have a great bra on.
You know, if you have a great bra on, the girls are going to sit right.
And then I know the ladies aren't going to want to hear this.
Go a size up on your shirt.
Cut the tag out, ladies.
Okay, nobody has to know.
It'll be our little secret.
Main thing is when you look in that mirror, you want to have the great reflection looking back at you and saying, you know what?
This looks great on me.
And the key is to probably go up a size so everything looks smooth.
Oh, so you can get these rules for confidence in the dressing room to become a real one for you.
So I want Denise, if you don't mind, come over here with me.
Yes.
And you head in there.
You've got a whole dressing room for you.
Lots of different outfits to try on.
Here's your challenge.
I want you to try on different blouses.
Find something that works for you.
I'm going to come back and check on you in a second.
Okay, great.
Okay, I'll close that up.
All right.
Now, while she tries that on, let's get to the next rule.
Who here fat shames themselves without putting on jeans?
Let me show a show of hands.
Come on over, man.
All right.
Thank you for coming.
What's your first name?
Tiffany.
Tiffany.
All right.
Let me hear your story.
What's the biggest obstacle to finding jeans that make you look the way you want to look?
I bring in, like, four different sizes into the fitting room.
Nothing fits right.
My butt doesn't fit.
My thighs don't fit.
It's too tight.
It's just frustrating.
You can never find anything.
You got a little rule here?
That's a common factor.
The key thing is you want jeans that stretch.
You know, you want them to have a great color pattern as well.
And we have some good options over here, too, to show you.
Come on a little bit.
We'll try these out.
I'll screw you over here.
Get every jean possible.
And I must say, they all look pretty good from the outside in.
How do you know which one is the right one to try?
Okay, so this is a good one right here, Tiffany.
Basically, you have a dark denim on, right?
But what you want to do is get a jean that's going to have a contour effect.
Darker on the outsides, so darker on your hips and where the butt is, and in the front it slims the thighs, but you're still trendy because now you see white jeans, you see lighter colors.
You still want to get something that has the lighter color in there, but still has darker on the outer rims because it's going to basically give you that slim silhouette.
We should show you a Curvinista line of silhouette jeans.
I would love to, Dr. Oz.
Your first client.
Let's welcome back over here.
Escort us over there.
I'm gonna go back and check on our blouse over there.
You can come with us if you want.
Get out of the seat if you want.
So here's the thing.
When you're in that dressing room, try to put on the right blouse.
You always feel some time pressure.
So I'm not gonna rush, but Andrea, if you're ready, are you ready?
I'm all set.
Show it to us.
Let's see. - Oh. - Woo! - Woo! - They look good.
And she looks great.
She still, you know, can wear her statement necklace.
And, you know, I'm pretty sure we had great sizes in there, but there's none of that gaping.
You know, she has a great bra underneath as well, and it just really streamlines it.
She wanted to be cool, girl.
She could roll up the sleeve a little bit.
You know, it's just a great staple to have in your wardrobe, but make sure it's a pop of color, because that brings the eyes, and it's just vibrant.
Andrew, what do you think?
I love it, and I have to admit, like, I'm guilty of buying a size too small, but I feel more comfortable in this.
You know, it's paradoxical.
I understand why people try to get a smaller size, but for that one second of pain when you cut the tag out, you have years of joy because you actually look the way you want to look in the shirt.
Right.
I'm happy for you.
Thanks very much.
Thank you.
Get to the next rule.
Every outfit has a curvy translation.
So, if you don't mind, I don't know what a curvy translation is.
If you can explain it to me and everybody else.
Absolutely.
And I know you've worked with one of our audience members on this.
Yes.
Yes, so basically a curvy translation, or just for any woman.
You see your favorite celebrities, you know, you follow the blogs, you see, you know, a lot of different things for Fashion Week, and you say, huh, I love florals, but I don't want to wear it head to toe.
I love stripes, but I can't wear it head to toe.
You pick one key thing from that, and you take that as inspiration, and that's the curvy translation of your favorite outfit, or rocking the trends.
Let's do the experiment.
Before the show, Denise worked with Lauren.
She's a self-proclaimed curvy woman.
She wanted to find out a curvy translation of this outfit, which you also Jennifer Lopez wore on American Idol.
See the little cutouts there and all.
So, can I bring Lauren now?
She ready?
Yes!
All right, Lauren, please join us.
Oh, it looks good!
It looks good!
So, walk us to it.
Tell us about the curvy translation here.
Okay.
So, basically, I took Lauren to Kohl's, and we started at the intimate section.
We got her some great shapewear so that her hips would be slenderized and she could accentuate her favorite parts.
Her boobs are amazing.
Let's just say she's blessed with a bosom.
That's right.
Blessed with a bosom.
She can wear that to work.
This, obviously, she's going out to cocktails or to get a man, that type of thing.
We just wanted to celebrate her sexiness and make her look amazing.

Next.
All new Oz.
She wants to give them unhealthy food.
This family can't stop fighting.
He's ridiculous.
He has type 1 diabetes.
Why would you give him candy?
Dr. Oz has what they need.
A step-by-step plan to resolve family conflict.
That's coming up tomorrow.
I'll be honest.
Do you ever say to yourself, I'm so hungry and I never feel full?
Does that come up any time in any of your lives?
Yes.
So to help out, I've invited the woman who's inspired millions to slim down with her tips, tricks, and tasty swaps.
She's back with her new book to help uncover the biggest traps sabotaging your diet.
She's hungry girl, Lisa Lillian.
Welcome.
Why is this so difficult, so challenging for women to stay on a diet when they start the program?
You know, you hit the nail on the head.
People are hungry.
I'm hungry.
We're all hungry.
And when they diet, they just feel like unsatisfied.
And the calories that they're allowed to eat in order to lose weight are often very unsatisfying.
So they give up.
So you've got all kinds of tricks coming over here.
The first trap that's sabotaging your diet, this happens a lot, is that you feel deprived, like jaws of death, plaster deprivation.
Okay, we've got to do it.
So how do you actually get past the deprivation we feel?
What's a no-deprived diet?
Well, the truth is, if women feel deprived, they're going to give up.
So if you restrict, then they're just going to throw in the towel.
So what I like to do is let them eat the foods they really crave and the foods they want to eat, but do it in a way that lets them still lose weight and fit into their pants.
So give me a couple examples of fried-free foods.
Okay, right here I have cheeseburger tostadas, which, look at that, that's a big serving over here.
It's huge.
Yes, and it tastes exactly like you're eating a big, gooey cheeseburger, but instead of having a big, puffy, carby bun, some light corn tortillas with extra lean ground beef and some reduced-fat cheese, but you get the pickles and the onions and the tomatoes and the mustard and the ketchup, and you feel like you're eating a big, giant, fatty burger.
It does with all the accoutrements, the condiments.
And you got a brownie?
Yes, that's a brownie.
Brownies are fattening.
Well, typically they are, but not this one.
This one only has 94 calories.
And that's, yes, you can clap for the 94-calorie brownie.
This is made with canned pumpkin.
Canned pure pumpkin is great.
You don't eat the eggs, the oil, the butter, none of that.
Canned pumpkin is a magical ingredient, and it gives you fiber, too.
I should just taste this.
You should.
Shouldn't he?
Yeah.
We should have the audience taste it.
Come on over here.
We'll give the audience a couple.
Here's some napkins to lead the way.
Who wants to taste brownies?
Look at them jump up.
Here, we'll do the front row here so I don't fall.
I'll get mobbed as we go up there.
Take some bites here, and we want some honest impressions of what you guys think.
Here, go ahead and pass that around up there.
Your size is so polite up there.
Okay, what do you guys think?
Delicious.
One word, delicious?
Yeah.
You look very discriminating.
Very good.
Give it a grade.
What do you think?
That's very good.
Very good?
Your mouth's full.
You're really good.
Good, right?
All right.
Yes.
Listen, I got to say, I love the taste of these.
I got to have one for lunch today.
But more importantly, these tortillas, they have 350 calories.
That's what you described before.
And the brownies, 94 calories.
I love that.
Enjoy.
Alright, next!
Portion size.
The next big trap that we run into.
What's your secret for portion control?
Well, I am all about food swapping.
So, you have to find the ways to hit those buttons, get those cravings, and keep the calorie counts down.
So, it's about finding good ingredients to use to swap.
So, are you ready to help me make some French toast?
This is not just any, this is called a stuffed and smothered berry french toast.
Yes, it is stuffed and it's smothered.
So, first, great swap ingredient.
I can help with this.
This is light red.
Come on.
And this is just egg whites, so you don't have the yolk, which saves you some fat.
And flip that over.
You cook that for a couple minutes.
In the pan is some light, buttery spread.
Light, buttery spread, which gives you some buttery flavor.
We can throw that on the plate.
We're going to build it now.
Okay, here we have some light ricotta cheese.
You want to do the stuffing?
Yes, I like it.
Light ricotta cheese with some sweetener.
Throw it all in.
So smother it?
That's the thing.
This is a huge portion.
Oh, my goodness.
Stuff it.
Then we're going to smother it.
So there's some sweetener and cinnamon in that.
I'm going to cover that for you.
Oh, I get it.
Stuffing and smothering.
Yes, both.
This is almost suffocatingly now.
And so instead of, like, you know, gooey, sugary syrup, we have fresh berries.
And this is a blueberry.
Good job.
Blueberry compote that there's a full cup of berries in this recipe.
So, again, look at the serving size.
And it's less than 350 calories for all that food.
Wow.
You know, I guess I like the fact that its calorie count is so low, 333, but even better for me, it has 20 grams of protein, which means you can actually lose weight.
This will help you avoid some of those issues that we have with long-term diets.
Okay, the last trap, this is a big one, is no flexibility.
Boom, that trap closes on no flexibility.
Esther's here.
Hi!
So I understand you've been eating a fairly consistent meal every day.
What's a typical day for you?
You know, when I'm on a diet, I eat the same thing all the time.
It's roasted chicken or grilled chicken, vegetables or salad.
Not much change.
It's really boring.
And I live in the South.
So temptation is everywhere.
Fried, smothered, covered, wrapped in bacon.
That's what we look for.
Wrapped in bacon?
I hear you.
Oh my gosh.
Wrapped in bacon and then deep fried.
So, Lisa, what's the key?
How do you avoid getting bored?
Well, the thing is, I do love chicken, but there are so many ways you can prepare it.
It's like, I love to be a mad scientist in the kitchen, so I have chicken three ways here.
This is a mac and chicken and cheese.
Now, look at the portion size of that.
It's huge.
It's huge, and you have your chicken, but it's bulked up because there's not only whole wheat pasta, but it's bulked up with cauliflower.
So, look at the portion size with that, and you'd never know what's in there.
Well, and in the South, mac and cheese is considered a vegetable.
Oh, it is?
Yeah, so...
It's like gravy's a beverage in the South.
This actually has a vegetable, and you get a huge serving.
Again, less than 350 calories for that.
And then I also love potatoes, but you think, you know, potatoes are carby, and if you're watching your weight, you can't really eat potatoes.
This is a chicken marinara stuffed potato, where I only use half the potato, so I scoop a little bit out.
And then you put your chicken marinara in there, and you have a big, hearty, satisfying comfort food dish.
And over there, there's a barbecue chicken bowl.
Ooh!
And so there's no carbs there, again.
It's more like a big, giant, satisfying salad, but you have the barbecue sauce and the corn and a lot of the veggies and nice, big chunks of chicken.
So you'd never even know it's the same thing.
Well, I have to try this mac and cheese.
Dig in.
I know.
I saw you eyeing that.
It's my husband's favorite.
I mean, every time we go, they say, two vegetables.
He says, mac and cheese.
So...
Then he doesn't understand why his pants don't fit.
Exactly, right.
The Dracula is shrinking the laundry.
You see, all these chicken recipes, they have less than 350 calories.
This, my friends, is how you get on a program.
And stay on it.
We put the recipes on Dr. Raj.
You look great.
Dr. Raj.com has them all.
This new book is called, are you ready?
It's called The Hungry Girl Diet Cookbook.
It's everything we've ever promised anybody.
And everyone in the studio audience is going home with it today.
We'll be right back.
Coming up next, a couple on an extraordinary life-saving mission, driven by their devastating loss, are putting your children's hearts to the test.
Their inspirational story could change you and your family's life.
Coming up next.
A daytime television event.
Emmy Award-winning Dr. Oz celebrates his 1,000th show with Hugh Jackman, Thursday, May 7th.
That's coming up on Thursday.
Doctors are not the only ones who save lives, and this next story proves it.
Take a look at how a devastating tragedy launched one couple on an extraordinary life-saving mission.
October 21st, 2004, Simon Sudman bounced into the world weighing nearly seven pounds.
Beautiful little boy.
We were just so blessed.
A happy chubby cheek baby, Simon smiled for the first time at seven weeks.
A giant smile.
He also developed a really hearty laugh.
But 47 days later, everything changed.
I put Simon down for a nap and he simply didn't wake up.
It's just something that you can't fathom.
No parent has ever prepared for something like that.
Devastated, Simon's parents searched for answers.
He was diagnosed with SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
What we found is SIDS is a term that's used when they don't know anything else.
Our pediatricians were a little wiser and told us that we should get our hearts checked because babies just don't die.
They did, and learned Phyllis had a congenital heart defect, a defect that Simon apparently inherited.
Undetected and untreated, it proved fatal.
Simon was one of thousands of kids to die of sudden cardiac arrest each year.
Some were babies, others were high school athletes.
The bottom line that everyone needs to know is sudden cardiac arrest isn't just an adult thing, that it happens to kids.
So Phyllis and Darren decided to take action, starting Simon's Fund in their son's honor to provide children with free heart screenings, sponsor medical research, and raise awareness for sudden cardiac arrest.
These are all conditions that are detectable and treatable, which is why what we're doing seems so obvious and so important.
I don't want another family to go through what we've been through.
If I would have known, Simon would be here.
That's a hard thing because Simon saved my life and it should have been the reverse.
So Darren and Phyllis were determined to make a difference and make it easier for kids to get their hearts checked.
They're joining us today, Darren and Phyllis Sudman.
I know it's hard to watch that.
Absolutely.
In the middle of all that grief, where do you find the clarity, the strength to be able to look for solutions?
I think, you know, losing Simon was devastating, but we really, you know, we wanted to find a way to keep his memory alive, and we also had this information, and we wanted to get the message out there so that no other family has to go through what we've been through, and that Heart, these heart conditions are preventable and detectable.
I'm struck by your point that, you know, you should have been saving his life and said he saved your life.
Because you had the same condition.
Yep.
Just never knew it.
Now you say that we actually take our hearts for granted in America.
I've really learned that.
Over the course of the last 10 years, we've learned that heart conditions are one of the most prevalent birth defects and responsible for a lot of kids dying.
So I created a little graphic that might help the audience understand the magnitude of what you guys have been able to achieve through all this grief, and I applaud you for that.
Since 2005, Simon's Fund has checked over 10,000 children's hearts.
Look at that.
Now, of those kids checked, nearly 100 of them were screened.
A heart condition was detected that could have ended their lives.
All those reds are kids who had their lives potentially saved.
And it all started from the very first child saved by the screening.
Her name is Melissa Fair.
And Melissa's heart condition was detected when she was only 10 years old.
That was seven years ago.
Today, she's healthy and more active than ever.
In fact, I want you to see that for your own, because I brought her here today.
wants to come join us.
Well, we don't want to warn you ahead of time.
We would have taken all the fun out of it.
So I'm going to come back to you in a second.
Why is this making you emotional?
Because just having her here, it's incredible.
Incredible.
What's amazing about Melissa's story is she had open heart surgery on what would have been, it was the anniversary of Simon's death, on the third anniversary of his death.
So it's just incredible.
Incredible.
And I'd love if you could just talk to this wonderful couple of the submits and tell them what it means to you and how this changed your life, what they're doing.
Every day, every time I look in the mirror, I remember how lucky I am.
My family and I will always be so grateful to Simon's Fund for saving my life.
And thanks to you guys, I am now able to continue the rest of my life.
And in the fall, I will be attending Penn State University, as you know.
I hope to continue the work that you guys started by setting up heart screenings there and in that community.
And I can't wait to check Hearts and Save Lives.
I love that you could take something that painful and make something positive out of it.
God bless you for your doing.
Congratulations in college.
Thank you.
You can also find out how to donate to Simon's Fund or host a screening on our website.
safe.
We'll be right back.
All new odds.
He says his mother-in-law has turned into a monster-in-law, ruining his family's health.
She wants to change the rules, give them unhealthy food.
I don't want to talk about this with you because you're ridiculous.
A battle for control that could tear this family apart.
He has type 1 diabetes.
Why would you give him candy?
Nobody's going to tell me what I can't give my grandchildren.
Dr. Oz has just what this family needs.
A step-by-step plan to resolve any family conflict that could be making you sick.
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
You've all heard the term beer goggles.
Is that right?
You've all heard beer goggles?
Right?
Yeah, that's the way it happens after you've had a few drinks and everyone starts to look pretty attractive to you.
Well, I've got a new term for it that's a little different.
It's called wine glasses.
Here's why I'm calling it wine glasses.
British researchers showed people a series of pictures of models who were either sober or had a glass of wine.
Think about this.
All they did was have a glass of wine to get a picture of themselves.
They found that the models who drank a glass of wine looked more attractive than the sober models.
Why would that be?
The theory is that the allure comes from the increased blood flow and facial flushing when you have that little glass of wine.
Another theory is that the wine boosted the spirits of the models, making them smile subtly and relax.
However, moderation still wins.
Get this.
The models who drank two glasses were not viewed as more attractive.
You only need one glass to look more attractive.
Stop with the first glass.
Cheers to all of you.
Now it's time for Casey Mystic.
First, another friend of mine, Dr. Mark Hyman, joined us.
He gave us his insights into the way he eats himself.
He calls himself a pegan.
It's a combination of paleo and vegan lifestyles.
You get the best of both worlds for shutting down chronic inflammation.
You get the best of both, but you don't have those loopholes where you can make mistakes.
So you can eat meat, for example, and you don't have to be cheating on your diet.
But there's important tips to take along with the idea.
First of all, you have to use meat as a condiment.
You put it on top of the vegetables like I'm showing you here.
It's not going to be the main part of the dish.
Think of it like ketchup on a burger.
It's a condiment.
Put a tiny bit on there.
The next vegan rule was that you can't have more than a half a cup of beans a day.
Beans are a fantastic source of fiber and protein.
I love them.
If you're a diabetic or have blood sugar issues, these beans can sometimes spike your blood sugar.
But a moderate amount, again, it's not bad.
But if you have a choice to have the smaller beans, he says, not the big starchy ones like kidney or lima beans, your body will tolerate it better.
And finally, please be careful of dubious people online that make it seem like I'm endorsing their products, because they don't.
