Time Text
Today on Oz, Paula Deen loves butter.
So good!
But it's her battle with diabetes she's talking about.
Did it scare you when you had that diagnosis the third time?
I've had to pull myself up by my bootstraps more than once.
How she lost 35 pounds.
Little changes can render big results.
And her healthy twist to classic Dean dishes.
So good!
Coming up next on Dr. Oz.
Great show today.
Paula Deen is here.
She is as busy as ever and as healthy as she has been in years.
After a diabetes diagnosis, she's taking charge of her health.
And today, she's going to tell us exactly how she did it.
Paula Deen, come on out and join us.
- How are you?
- Hey, yo.
- Hey, don't. - Oh, I miss you.
And I've missed you.
Oh, I love having you here.
I love all these folks.
Akia, they're excited for you in a very unique way.
And I'm excited for them.
All these folks are so full of love, and we need that.
We need love in our life.
Well, there's a lot of love with you.
I gotta say, I am absolutely stunned.
You look so good.
Well, thank you, and I feel so good.
And just to get everyone up to date, Paul was diagnosed with diabetes.
He lost 35 pounds.
35 pounds, which is a big deal.
I just want to know how you did it.
What did you eat?
How did you exercise?
You know, it's funny, Dr. Oz.
When I was told I was a type 2 diabetic, I didn't believe the doctor.
I said, she's got this wrong.
Nobody in my family is diabetic.
We all live the same way.
So the next six months, when it was time for my checkup, she said, yep, you're diabetic.
I said, okay.
Went on about my way.
The next six months, she said, yes.
And I'm not real happy with the meds I've got you on.
So I said, okay, I really am diabetic.
And at that point, I went home to my kitchen and I threw out everything that was white.
You did.
White bread, white rice, white potatoes, white pasta.
And I did that for four months, y'all.
Just four months.
And I lost 35 or 40 pounds.
And now I've brought everything back into my kitchen, just like anybody's kitchen.
But the thing that I'm trying to really focus on, y'all, Is moderation, moderation, moderation.
You know, eat a cookie, just don't eat six of them.
You know what I mean?
Because nobody wants to go their whole life thinking I can never have anything good again.
No, you can.
There's a fine line, though, between moderation and hedonism, right?
People fall into the trap of having the sixth cookie when they start off just having one, and that's part of the challenge.
Yeah, because you say, oh, crap, I've blown it.
You know?
There you go.
But there's always tomorrow.
If you blow it, you can start over again tomorrow.
Well, you know, Paul, I've spent my whole career sitting with people in an office who have type 2 diabetes who are probably going to need heart surgery because of it.
And I say, cut out the white foods, put your fork down, eat slower, be aware of what you're doing.
Yes.
Moderation, not hedonism, all that stuff.
And yet most people really suffer with this.
It's a big struggle.
I know it's much more difficult than I make it seem.
It is.
It's hard, isn't it, y'all?
It's hard.
So what clicked for you?
What finally got you over that and you realized you could do it?
Well, it was that third visit.
And then I got a call from a pharmaceutical company asking if I would lighten up some of my recipes for them.
And, you know, so, I mean, it was really, it just really all came together for me.
Do you have a family history of heart problems or diabetes?
Well, my daddy was dead at 40. He had rheumatic fever as a child, and my mother was dead at 44, y'all.
Just this beautiful couple, this most beautiful couple, inside and out.
It was devastating.
And, you know, I think I've told you before that I went into a 20-year ride with agoraphobia, which is awful, awful, awful.
So I've had to pull myself up by my bootstraps more than once in my 68 years.
But, you know, it's...
It's those things that give us an opportunity to shine and to build character, you know?
But it really is the challenging times.
Part of the reason I absolutely adore you, and I do for many reasons.
Thank you, thank you.
It's because you're so real in these struggles that you face.
What you see is what you get, that's for sure, y'all.
And it's the truth.
So, Paul was never slowed down by a second on this deal.
No.
We talk and interact, and I'm so stunned, so impressed at how fast you change a lot of things.
But what I didn't expect was what a technophile you've become.
She has a new game app, which is fabulous.
Yes!
It's really good.
Please explain to me what the...
You can win recipes with this app.
Are y'all gamers?
Like, I am a nut.
Trust me, they're gamers.
I know my audience.
I am nuts for games.
I just...
It's hard for me to sit and do nothing.
And, you know, when you've had a rough day...
Oh, look!
There it is!
There she is, little Paula.
Oh, there she is.
Oh, she's gaming around right there.
Yes.
Y'all, you can get it on your iPhone, your iPad, or Android.
But here's the greatest part.
I've been playing all these little fun little games for several, several years.
And y'all know them all.
Y'all are familiar with them all, I'm sure.
But Paula Deen's Recipe Quest, you actually win real prizes.
But let me tell y'all what the grand prize is.
On May the 31st, if you've made it through 40 levels, 40 steps, which is not hard at all.
I did it in like two days.
But if you get through those 40 steps, your name goes in a pot, and we're going to draw out a name, and the grand prize winner is going to come to Savannah with me and appear on the Paula Deen Network.
Oh, I want to come!
So, play!
And listen, here's the best part, y'all.
It's free.
It's free.
Explain to everybody what the Paul Dean Network is.
Did you ever imagine you'd have your own network when you're in your kitchen, age 19?
Dr. Oz, you've got to remember that this old girl started when I was 42 years old, and I had $200 to my whole name.
Hmm.
So, surprised?
Yes.
Yes.
But it's amazing.
You know, you get so involved in your work and you work and you work and you work and you don't think about it.
And then you look up and you say, great time of day.
Look what my hard work produced.
So, it truly is an American dream story.
My life has been an American dream story.
And I said, when my day is up here on Earth, and y'all hear the name Paula Deen, I do not want the first word to come to your mind to be butter.
I do not want that.
But...
Maybe the second word.
But the first word I want y'all to associate with me is hope.
Because I hope to bring you hope.
Alright, we're going to take a break.
When we come back, Paul gives healthy makeovers the two of our classic dishes.
Chicken fried steak and tomato pie.
Find out her healthy recipe tips.
They're next.
Coming up next, everyone's favorite Southern chef Paula Deen is making over her famous dishes to be healthier and even better.
Give me some!
Oh, it's so good!
Easy, delicious recipes that are low calorie and even lower fat, but with plenty of Paula's Southern charm.
Dr. Oz takes on the health stories you're talking about and tweeting about.
Plus, real Oz viewers reveal new uses for everyday things.
Wait till you see what soda, yes soda, can do for your hair.
Doesn't she look great?
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
We're back with the one and only Paula Deen.
During the past few years, Paula's done something I think is just great.
She's been making over some of her classic dishes to be healthier, but still just as delicious.
Today, she's going to show us healthier versions of our famous chicken fried steak with cream gravy, of course, and tomato pie.
Now, just clear this up.
Why?
Why have you decided to tackle some of these dishes that are so delectable in the original way?
You know, because it's just like I was saying a while ago.
We don't want to get up today and say, well, I'm going to start doing better.
I want to diet.
I want to lose weight.
And think you can never have that food that you love that your mama cooked for you.
So, and I do.
I want to be able to have it and taste it.
And it's amazing, y'all, that little changes can render big results.
Yeah.
Like our country fried steak, our regular, it was made with a quart of whole milk.
It was made with buttermilk.
It was made with like this much oil.
And today...
First of all, to help you with something, is this chicken or is this steak?
It's chicken fried steak.
Thank you for clarifying.
Why is it called chicken fried?
I gather it's steak because I see it here.
Chicken fried steak, to me, and y'all help me if I'm wrong because I don't even confess to know it all, but I want y'all to see.
Now the new version, we're dipping it through egg whites, y'all, instead of buttermilk.
Which, imagine the calories and the fat.
It's just that alone saves.
If you don't mind, I'm gonna give them the calories and the fat that your normal, old-fashioned version had.
Here's the thing.
By the way, it tastes so good, it might be worth it, but it's 889 calories, 55 grams of fat.
Which, it has to be pretty good.
That's Jamie Dean's favorite thing for me to cook him.
That's a Sunday meal.
It's a Sunday meal.
All right, so first thing, you switch out the cream for egg whites.
Egg whites.
All right, and then we mess it up a little bit in there, and then put it in the batter.
Yes, yes.
And then that's just regular old flour?
Yes, regular old flour.
Any difference there from the norm?
No, sir.
And before I put it in here, I know normally you used to use a fair amount of oil in a cast iron skillet.
Right.
I used to tell my patients to use cast iron skillets because you get the iron out of that.
If you're anemic, it actually works.
Really?
Yes.
I thought that was BS. No, no, no.
It's true.
It's elemental iron.
Maybe it is.
All right.
Now, you use just that misanostic pen.
That's right.
So we're going to switch to a non-stick pan, y'all.
Because, you know, sometimes you can lose your crust in those.
So into that little bit right there.
Now that's a huge difference.
And then as you mentioned, you switch out the couple...
The quart of whole milk.
We're only going to use a fourth of a cup of milk for this cream gravy, y'all.
But we're going to use a low-sodium chicken broth.
So, it really is, like, creamy.
Oh, Paul, this is so good.
Is it good?
Well, give me some.
Oh, it's so good!
This newly made chicken fried steak has, with the creamy gravy, by the way, added on top of it, has 339 calories, 17 grams of fat.
That's half the calories, a third the fat.
And it is really good.
Yachty's gonna rush the stage here.
That thing looks so darn good.
Isn't it good?
Y'all, it is delicious.
And just to prove it...
Open up, girl!
Feed it to her.
Oh!
She's throwing you under the bus.
Did you enjoy it?
Was it good?
You know what?
I promise at the commercial we're gonna cut that up and share it.
Isn't that yummy, darling?
Isn't that yummy?
More than yummy.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
I just wanted to somebody else to...
It is more than...
So, let's move on to that famous tomato pie you make.
This is a big change, because I've got to say, tomatoes themselves are perfect, but although it's delicious, and it's one of your favorites, I understand.
Is that right?
It is.
It is.
This is a dish, y'all, that we serve.
If we're having company and having a char-grilled steak, we'll serve a slice of tomato pie along with it.
But we also love it for breakfast with scrambled eggs.
At lunch, it's wonderful with a small salad.
The problem is the way that it was originally made, you can't afford to have anything next to it because it's 437 calories and 37 grams of fat.
So, since I trust you and I love you and your middle name is butter, your second word in the epithet is butter, tell me how you made this taste like that.
Okay.
Well, this is a regular pie crust.
I have used a lighter pie crust.
Recipe for this new crust, this flaky crust.
This much cheese is in this pie, y'all.
This much cheese is in the new version.
So the hero becomes the tomato, not the cheese from that one.
Right.
The cheese and the mayonnaise is the hero in that one.
Get all this mayo in here?
Yes, sir.
Yes.
You are something else.
But look-a-here.
Look-a-here.
Now we're gonna use this much cheese, that much mayonnaise, and the tomato is a true star in this one.
Now, what is the difference?
I'm gonna taste, but please give that same young lady over there a taste.
Let her compare this as well.
Okay.
Go ahead.
I want to get honest answers over there.
Okay.
Here I come.
Paula, I want to get you some crust.
Of course she wants the crust.
While she's doing that, don't forget, 207 calories, 14 grams of fat in this newer version.
I won't drink you this time.
That was good, Paula.
Mean but good.
What a devil you are.
Did you like it?
Is it good?
And I gotta say, with this version of your tomato pie, you can have lots of sides with it, because there's room.
And I don't, I personally, I've tasted both of them.
Listen, this is really rich, and you know how fantastic it is, but this stuff is so good, that will become my staple.
In fact, it will become my staple.
That is wonderful.
And listen, Dr. Oz, y'all put this little thing in your hat, and remember it, because it'll work with chicken as well, a pork fried steak.
Using the egg whites?
Right, using the egg whites because it's like that buttermilk.
It'll work to hold on that little bit of flour.
So, like I said, just stick that one in your little memory bank and, you know, use it on anything that you fry.
I adore having you on.
Let me celebrate, Paula Deen, when people have done what you've done and gone through so much and bounced back and keep the energy in their eyes, the same energy you said the audience had.
I see you all the time.
I love you dearly.
Let me celebrate you for a second.
Thank you.
This book is absolutely fabulous.
It's a bestseller, The Lady and Sons, the Savannah Country Cookbook.
It's just been reprinted, and Paula loves you all so much that everyone in the house is going home with them.
Woo!
I want you to be sure to download Paula's new game app.
They're happy to.
Her game app is Paula Gee's Recipe Quest, and she's agreed to stick around.
At the end of today's show, she's going to show us her favorite new ingredient to help make your meals healthier.
Be right back.
Salt can have a big impact on your health.
What do you use as a substitute?
Once my blood pressure shot up, I swapped out salt for a generic allspice.
It tastes just as good and there are no adverse effects.
Share yours on Facebook.com slash Dr. Oz.
Next.
Are you a control freak?
Do you have incredibly high standards and don't trust others to uphold them?
Stop controlling everything and everyone and losing control of your health.
The plan to loosen your hold over others and get rid of the stress in your life.
Next.
How many of you have uttered this sentence, if I don't do it myself, it won't get done right?
I know I have.
After all, I'm a surgeon.
But lots of other of you out there, so I've got a plan for all my fellow control freaks today.
Because control on everything and everyone around you can cause you to lose control of your own health.
That's what's happening to Rosemary.
I admit I'm a control freak.
I need things to be the right way.
And I think my way is the right way.
It works out all the time if you do it my way.
I have an internal clock in my head that tells me how much every activity is going to take.
I control what time my family wakes up in the morning.
Come on, baby, you got 30 minutes.
Brush your teeth, make your bed.
Get up, you got 20 minutes.
I never allow my husband to do the laundry because I have this huge fear of him not doing it the right way.
It's just too much detergent.
I'm the one who does the food shopping because if my husband does it, I find that he might buy something we don't need or we might end up going over budget.
Where are the fruits?
And you got crackers.
We already have crackers, babe.
I control the finances.
I have an alarm set for when each bill is due.
So that we are never late and we never pay interest on anything.
When it comes to scheduling, I'm the master.
This is Command Central.
This computer, I have my work schedule, and in green, I have an overview of what's going on at home.
This manages my husband's schedule, my three daughters' schedule, and each is color-coded.
On my tablet, I have an overview of the home schedule, an overview of the work schedule.
On my phone, I have everyone's schedules to a T. This way, I make sure that everyone is where they need to be at all times to the minute.
I fear if I allow our schedule to get out of control, we won't spend time together as a family.
I feel like my need to control is wreaking havoc on my health.
Because I put everyone else's need before my own, I am stressed, completely exhausted, and I feel run down.
It's gotta stop.
I'm at my breaking point.
Rosemary's joining us, controlling everything, even how much detergent is in the wash cycle.
I mean, it's unbelievable.
What would happen if your husband or someone else helped you do the laundry?
I fear that they might mess it up, Dr. Oz.
We don't have time to really, or money to really, they might destroy our clothes.
They might put too much detergent, use too many dryer sheets.
It might drive me crazy, and then we end up going shopping for more clothes, which put us again out of budget.
It just has to be done my way.
Most families would never offer, and most moms would happily take the offer if it did occur.
It's remarkable.
It's the opposite of what I normally would expect.
And it's interesting, you're worrying yourself about what might happen, but that in itself is paralyzing you.
What would it mean to you if you could relearn this control issue and deal with some of the stress that comes from it?
That would mean so much to me.
However, it has to be done the right way, which is my way.
I'm glad I got that.
You haven't tried to control the interview.
So I actually brought a colleague to join me today, someone who I trust a lot.
It's going to help you, but it's going to help everyone at home as well to help loosen your control over others so you can gain control over your own health, which is my goal.
Please welcome psychologist Dr. Aaron Olivo.
Thank you.
Thank you, Aaron.
So, Aaron has an interesting first step that I want you to think through.
She actually argues, this is for everybody, by the way, that we have to be a witness to our own behavior.
If you don't mind, explain what that means to Rosemary and everybody else.
Sure.
I really do believe that we can't change any behavior if we don't know that we're engaging in it, right?
You have to know what's happening.
And we have to be able to observe ourselves, almost be a witness to our own behavior.
That's hard, though, sometimes, right?
It really is.
And the good news is that you're here because you recognize that you're over-controlling things and it's creating a problem for you.
But the other, I think, really good news about being here today is that you have a family that is absolutely interested in being a part of this solution as well.
And they want to help you too.
And so they actually tape some interviews where they are going to show you and tell you a little bit about the behavior they observe that you're engaging in.
Are you ready to see your truth?
Yes.
I'm sure it's great.
Well, we'll see.
We're about to find out.
Take a look.
I think my wife's need to control actually comes from a good place.
Her idea is that if she would actually control and manage our time, that we'd have more time to spend together in the end as a family.
But to be quite honest with you, at the end of the day, there really is no time left over.
She has a time limit for everything.
If I don't get that thing done in that time frame, or if I don't do it how she wants me to do it, Then I feel nervous that she might yell or scream because it's not her way and now she wants me to do it.
She will make time for a fun activity, but the fun activity is time.
It's such a killjoy.
She said everybody has a role of playing in the house and she's playing every role in the house.
And it just gets really frustrating.
We really love her and appreciate all that she does.
But personally, I wish sometimes she would just relax.
You know, stop and take some time for herself.
That's a lot of love there.
So what does it feel like to hear yourself described that way?
To be honest, I actually thought that I was doing something great.
I didn't really realize how it was making them feel because in the long run, I really wanted to spend more time with them and make sure that they are happy.
So it's really a surprise to hear them say that, you know, they're frustrated or they might get a little nervous if they're not done in that time frame.
So obviously they're stressed out by it, but it's probably stressing you out as well.
Yes, absolutely it is.
You know, when I fight with my wife, this is one of the things we fight about, because I'm always micromanaging.
She calls me, she nicknamed me a superhero, the meddler.
That's my nickname, the meddler.
And she's right when she says that sometimes I try to be so efficient that I'm inefficient.
And I think you're causing a lot of heat with that family that you love so much who are sitting on the bench watching you play all the positions on the field.
And the real experience you want to have in life is on the field, not on the bench.
So Dr. Levo says for all of our behaviors, all of them, you can find something that's correlated to one of eight core emotions.
They stem from those emotions.
We're going to find out what they are and how you can control them so you can get rid of your stress for good.
Stay here.
Next.
Stressed out and run down from doing everything for everyone else?
Get to the root of your control issues and stop your emotions from controlling you.
Understand your behavior and learn what your triggers really mean.
The plan to release control so you can take back your health.
Next.
Is binge watching actually bad for you?
Plus, Real Oz viewers reveal new uses for everyday things.
Wait till you see what soda can do for your hair.
Doesn't she look great?
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
For all the self-proclaimed control freaks out there, myself included, who are stressed out and run down, doing things for everybody else, everything, frankly, for everybody else, we have the doing things for everybody else, everything, frankly, for everybody else, we have the plan to stop controlling others so you can Dr. Levo says that the stress that all control freaks feel always boils down to emotions.
To emotions.
So, if you can't, explain the big idea for us.
So I think the big idea here really is that we're using this term stress as this sort of catch-all phrase.
I'm so stressed out.
I'm so overwhelmed.
And we're not really being specific enough to really be able to come up with a solution.
Because stress, when we say we're feeling so stressed out, what we're really feeling is that we're struggling with some difficult, distressing emotion.
So the great news is that despite the fact that we have millions of words for emotions, there's really only eight emotions.
There's really only eight core emotion families that we need to learn about.
And so that makes it easier.
So we have this great graphic to show what those eight emotions are.
And I'd love to use, Rosemary, use you as an example to go through the fact that You're probably experiencing a bunch of different emotions when it comes to your controlling behavior.
And that's true for most people who are controlling things.
That, you know, you're starting out by saying, I feel so stressed because of my controlling behavior, but I'd actually suggest that it's actually emotion that's driving you to control.
So let's look at the different emotions.
To start with, my guess is if I asked you, what do you think drives your need to control things?
And you'd probably point to that first emotion, love, right?
You love your kids, you love your husband, you love your family.
Yes, absolutely.
And that's really why you mostly try to control things, you think, right?
Yes.
I want to maximize time with them because I love them so much.
I want to make sure I have a lot of time with them.
So I time the activities that they do so that we have the time to spend time like we really want to spend.
Right, right.
And so love drives that, right?
Yes.
But here's the one I think is the most important, and this is the one, Dr. Oz, that I also think is most often driving control freaks, and that's fear.
Fear.
So when I ask you to complete the sentence, if I don't keep control over everything, I really fear...
Things will spiral out of control.
I won't see my family as much as I need to and want to.
And what would that mean?
That would mean to me that I don't have it together.
I would feel sad.
I would be upset that I'm not spending the time with the people who love me and who I love.
And would you say that that actually means you wouldn't be being a good mom?
Yes, absolutely.
I wouldn't be the best mom out there.
I think parents should spend time with their kids and wives should spend time with their husband.
And if I'm unable to do so, I would feel that I'm not only not being a good mom, but also not being a good wife.
Right.
Right.
It's a powerful statement, because basically what I'm hearing you say is that if I'm not in control, I'm not a good mom.
I took out all the connecting facts, but that's the beginning and the end of what you just told us.
Yes.
Erin, give us some examples of how people, because a lot of people I think are doing this.
When they try to control an area that they have some control over, they actually give up places where they really wanted to control.
So for other examples could be that something at work isn't going the way you want it to go.
That a relationship you're in is ending or not going the way you want it to.
And those things are not as controllable.
And so we find other places in our life to be able to control.
So I need everything in my cupboard to be in alphabetical order.
Or I need all the timing to be exactly perfect.
I need the right laundry detergent.
And those are little things that we feel we can control.
So that it helps us with that out of control feeling we have in another place.
When was the last time you felt that you did something that was out of control?
I would say in college.
I had my daughter, my first daughter, my oldest daughter.
So right there, since then, I decided that I need to be in control of not only me, but now another person, so I have to shape up.
It wasn't the plan to have the child in college?
Absolutely not.
It wasn't.
And although she is a blessing and she's great, this, I took that as a, like, during the headlights, like a warning.
Like, I have to get in control now.
Dr. Levo, by the way, thank you for being honest about this.
I know these are tough conversations, but this is how we get the solutions for you and so many folks at home.
These are the kinds of insights that we need to move on.
Insights that sometimes you try to cover up a little bit.
One last tip is a big one.
Dr. Levo argues that we have to do one thing every day that makes us uncomfortable.
Why do we have to be comfortable being uncomfortable?
Because I actually think that your controlling is making you more uncomfortable.
You need to practice not controlling so that you see that it can actually feel better.
But then things will spiral out of control.
They probably won't.
And here's the thing.
Small spirals.
Anybody spirals.
You have to start.
You do have to start small.
So that's why I suggest you pick one thing.
So pick one thing you're willing to give up.
The shower.
Five more minutes in the shower.
Okay.
Then I want you, this is five more minutes for you in the shower?
No, for the kids.
All the kids are limited.
You'll limit how long they're in the shower?
Absolutely.
I love this.
I feel much better about myself now.
I'm making this home.
So when you resist the urge to rush them along through their shower, you're probably going to feel a little uncomfortable at first because that fear that's driving things, it's going to come up while you don't go in and tell them, come on, hurry up.
What I'd like you to do instead is to sit, breathe, relax your body, and remind yourself that whether they take a five-minute longer shower doesn't make you a bad mom, right?
This isn't actually about that.
Rosemary, I think life happens while we're busy making plans.
And you're making so many plans that that wonderful snapshot of life that I'm looking at with the family on the bench over there, when they're even a year older, you'll never have those moments again.
I'd rather they struggle with the extra five minutes in the shower and then build yourself up to the laundry machine stuff.
You'll probably enjoy it.
Then it's called training your kids.
All right.
I want everyone at home, everyone in the audience, I want you all to do this.
Pick anything that makes you a little uncomfortable, takes you out of your safety zone, because those safety walls you're putting up, they're actually cages that you're putting around yourself, that don't let you move and become the person you could be.
Challenge yourself, challenge your emotions, and practice letting go.
I'm going to give you the full plan and all the information we talked about, plus from all of our other tube experts on DrRoz.com.
And make sure to check out Dr. Erwin Levo's wonderful book.
It is fabulous.

Consumer correspondent Elizabeth Leamy is sharing incredible deals.
She's the best at this.
They'll be available for a limited amount of time at DrRoz.com.
Let's get right to it.
Tell us about the first surprise.
Okay, here we go.
So, the first item here, organic argan oil by Essence of Argan.
And this is the real deal, pure, not any of those fillers that you've warned people about in the past.
Plus, it has good things in it like vitamin E, antioxidants that come naturally to good argan oil.
Great for dry skin, especially the cuticles.
You can even put it in your hair for some shine.
Very nice.
Maybe even better than the product, though, is the price.
This is a fancy pants item, normally $115.
But just for you, Dr. Oz viewers, 75% off for a final price of $29!
Woo!
I'm taking this one up.
Lisa uses this all the time, my wife.
I tell you, it helps with the cuticles.
That's what surgeons have problems with, cuticles.
I love it.
Good stuff.
We've got more good stuff.
Very cool device here.
What is this?
Yes, indeed.
Fruit-infusing water bottles.
Now, who here has been to a spa and had that great spa water with fruit flavor in it?
They've always got, even you, huh?
Cucumbers, oranges, something.
Well, now you can make your own and...
Take it with you.
Much better than a sugary, processed drink, right?
Here's how you do it.
Your choice of fruit.
I'm gonna try a little orange kiwi mixture.
You put that in the base.
Put two blueberries in there for color.
Oh, okay.
You're a blueberry guy.
This has a little filter so the fruit doesn't bonk you in the face when you drink it.
Okay.
Screw that on.
Fill her up.
Yep.
Very good.
Voila.
There it is.
It bubbled down.
Oh my goodness.
If you fill both containers up, then you can seal it.
I guess I'll walk around with it.
That's absolutely right.
In fact, speaking of sealing it, try that out.
They say you can throw it in your purse and it won't spill.
Whoa, I'm glad that worked.
It did work indeed.
Excellent.
You know, this, I'm trying to drink more water.
This might be the answer because it is delicious.
You guys are always complaining about how water is bland, so I have a few of our audience members over there.
Let me see if you guys enjoy this.
It looks very colorful on you.
It goes with your outfits.
I'm proud of you.
You're enjoying strawberry orange watermelon right now.
You guys happy?
It's pretty cool.
And once you finish the water, you can just fill it back up again, right?
That's right.
You can add more water, keep going about your day.
So that's the goal.
What's it cost?
All right.
Normally, retail price $62.
You get two of these bottles, by the way.
For Dr. Oz Show viewers, 52% off.
Final price, $30.
Oh, I like it.
Yes.
All right, the third product.
Now, this is really cool.
I've been noticing this color keeps changing.
What is this?
This is the Aromatherapy Humidifier by Tribest.
I mean, a humidifier is a classic health tool.
Non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical.
Great for that.
Great for bloody noses, sinuses, dry skin, all of these things.
But this one has a twist.
See this little drawer here?
That is the aromatherapy compartment.
You can actually put essential oils, whatever you've got at home.
The essential oils are not included, but what I love...
Is lavender.
You put it in the compartment there.
And...
Ah!
That's the relaxation part.
Lovely.
It spreads throughout the house.
Yeah.
Very easily.
Again, big problem with dry skin in the winter, and you've got problems in the summertime oftentimes as well.
Allergy season, too.
Pricing.
All right.
So this is a tricked-out humidifier.
Normally $100, but Dr. Oz viewers get 51% off.
Final prize, $49.
I like it.
I like the color, too.
It's an orb.
It's pretty.
It's usually ugly.
So is the tub the product here?
What are we giving away?
A bath.
Well, you know, a bath is kind of a classic stress remedy, right?
But to make it even better, how about four soaps or your choice shampoo and conditioner?
This is an either-or.
You get to choose.
By Teodora.
These are...
All natural.
They're vegan.
They're phthalate-free.
And this is the neatest part.
They contain some of the latest, greatest ingredients discovered in the rainforest.
And Teodora gives money back for rainforest conservation.
So a product that tries to do some good and that's good for you.
Want to hear some pricing?
Please.
Uh-huh.
Normally $52 for the soaps, the four.
$60 for the shampoo and conditioner.
Whoa, but you get 60% off.
So final price, $21 and $24.
I love that you've taken products that are incredibly healthy for us.
Because I know you all say, I want to be healthy, but I can't afford it.
At these prices, I think it actually is worth making the investment for a lot of people.
Think it through, but none of these are a waste of your time when it comes to health.
Yeah, these all have clearly defined health benefits, relaxation and rejuvenation benefits.
What the heck is this?
Interesting one for last.
What is this?
Yes, the acupressure relaxation kit by Bed of Nails.
Whoa!
It's called Bed of Nails?
Well, that's the maker.
I like it.
It will make you wonder.
There are no nails, I am happy to say, but there are...
These acupressure plates on the pad and also the pillows strategically placed to help with pain and stress.
And they say it will help you in as little as 15 minutes, which is about right for my schedule.
Do you get the candles also?
Yes, you do.
Three-part set.
All right, so we put two of our viewers, victims, I should say.
Good sports.
Are you guys okay in the bed of nails?
Yes.
Does it feel good or is it a little uncomfortable?
No, it feels great.
No, it's really great.
You look very relaxed.
Is the head part good, too?
Yeah.
That's the best part.
It is.
Yeah, it gets the neck and everything.
Right in the neck.
They're very relaxed.
Elizabeth, what are the savings?
Is it worth it for them?
I can't say this in a relaxing tone.
So here goes.
Normally $160.
Kind of up there.
59% off for Dr. Oz Show viewers.
So final price, $65.
Thank you very much.
My work here is done.
Nicely done, Elizabeth Levy.
For more information on these great deals and to find out how you can get these huge discounts for a limited time only, go to DrOz.com slash retail therapy.
Enjoy yourselves there.
Audience, I could not do this show without you.
So you're all going home with a bottle of organic argan oil.
I love it.
Compromise of essence and argan.
We'll be right back.
I want some.
You get some.
Dr. Oz takes on the health stories you're talking about, tweeting about, and liking.
Next Oz, is binge watching your favorite shows actually bad for you?
You want to take time to?
De-stress and relax.
You weren't expecting this.
Plus, real Oz viewers reveal new uses for everyday things.
Wait till you see what soda, yes soda, can do for your hair.
Doesn't she look great?
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Earlier today, Paula Deen showed us some great menu makeovers to help make her famous chicken fried steak, which is actually steak, not chicken, and tomato pies.
Made them healthier, but just as delicious.
It's fried like chicken.
Oh, I'm spitting out tomatoes on this.
Tomatoes with a hero.
But she's got one more great tip to make your food a little healthier.
I asked her to stick around for the extra 30. Are you ready?
You got 30 seconds.
Here's the big secret, everybody.
It is switching out mayo.
With yogurt.
My son, Bobby, introduced me to yogurt.
It's got that same richness and consistency that you get from mayonnaise, but a lot, lot better for you.
And you're making, in all the dishes you make now, if you want to, you can switch it out pretty well?
You can switch it out with yogurt.
Anything that calls for that kind of creaminess.
And is it a one-for-one switch?
I would, you know, it's, I do a lot of eye and tongue.
That can be misinterpreted, you know.
I know.
A lot of things I say can be misinterpreted.
But Bobby made some pimento cheese, and he switched it around.
He put a lot of fresh veggies in our pimento cheese and he used the yogurt instead of the mayonnaise.
And I became a believer.
I couldn't get over how good it was.
Listen, I love having you here.
Thank you, Dr. Oz, I love being here.
Now play with the audience, don't be disruptive, because it's time for In Case You Missed It.
Okay, we'll be serious, won't we?
Today, a big shift in the way we think about our behaviors, like, for example, being a control freak.
Even I've admitted that I actually am a control freak.
I'm called the meddler at home for a reason.
We learned the biggest step towards getting our need for control under control is to match your behavior to one of the eight core emotions, the ones you see right now.
What are those emotions?
Love, happiness, fear, anger, and then there's sadness, shame, jealousy, and disgust.
Just eight words that describe the roots of so many things that we do.
These emotions drive, frankly, so much of what we do.
If you just learn these, it makes a difference.
So what are you going to do?
You're going to print out this list.
It's on DrRoz.com.
You're going to put that list on your fridge and buy your disco wherever you're hanging out.
And when you're feeling the need to control people, things, experiences, you're going to match that need to what's really the emotion behind it.
Get the full plan to stop controlling others so you can control your own health at DrRoz.com.
I'm going to put it on the homepage today so you can find it and share it with all the people, including the control freaks in your life.
Finally, be careful people, do these people online that make it seem like I'm endorsing their products because they don't.
