Today on Oz, supermodel Christy Brinkley.
Looking better than ever at 61. Yeah, 61!
Well, how do you stay on the top of your game in the 60s?
Christy reveals her best diet, beauty, and anti-aging secrets.
Where'd she hear about it?
Well, actually, I heard it from your show.
And how she copes with stress, living life in the public eye.
Coming up next on Oz...
Christy Brinkley has long been called one of the most beautiful women in the world.
And at 61, yes, she's 61. She's as gorgeous as ever.
So how does she do it?
How does she look so young?
Today, Christy Brinkley is revealing her anti-aging secrets.
You guys interested?
I thought so.
So, Christy, come on out.
It usually looks great.
I'm safe.
This is what I... Let me try that with you, like this.
I'm gonna break the elbow first.
Come join us.
So I got to say, I've heard so many questions from folks.
They all know you're coming on.
And they all want to know sort of the same thing.
How do you look so wonderful at age 61?
What are the secrets?
Oh, that's so sweet.
You know, I really think it has a lot to do with the fact that I am...
So grateful for everything.
And I think that ultimately your age is determined by your attitude.
I love the expression, bloom where you're planted.
And I truly find something to love about every minute of wherever I happen to be.
Let's go back and look at where you were planted.
This is a cover of a magazine.
You were in your 20s when this picture was taken.
And this is the People magazine cover.
Just to compare it for everybody, we did a cover last year at the age of 60. And I look at those two images and I think you must feel a lot of pressure to always look fantastic.
What was it like posing in that swimsuit at age 60?
You know, I never actually thought that would be how I would be celebrating my 60th birthday.
I was so flattered that they asked.
But I, you know, I'm really much more concerned with how I feel.
When you feel great and you feel energetic, that also makes you look better.
But the number one thing that I'm interested in is feeling good.
Makes a big difference.
Yes.
This is a campaign, by the way, a big ad campaign that Chris recently did.
Modeling, when you started four years ago, is a very different game.
I just look at this image of you with these young men, and they're all, of course, applauding you.
Look at this.
How can you stay on your top?
Forget about being beautiful.
How do you stay on the top of your game in the 60s?
You know, I love this campaign.
I have to say it's called Better Than Ever.
And I have to applaud Barneys for doing this.
Bruce Weber's the photographer.
Because they're using...
I don't want to say older, I want to say more experienced ladies.
I love experienced ladies.
And they're putting them in a position to be like, you know, adulated by these gorgeous young men.
And now there's a real move to expand what we think of as beautiful to include all ages, all ethnicities, all sizes, And I think every time we expand to be more inclusive, that's beautiful.
As an example of that, it's so well stated.
Usually there was a photo of Sidney Crawford online.
I want you all to see this picture again.
I know most of you have probably seen it.
It has sparked a debate about retouching photos in magazines and the pressure that puts on women to strive for perfection that frankly, folks, doesn't really exist.
It's not real.
You know, I have to say something about this picture.
I just shared a dressing room with Cindy Crawford.
At most, it was a year ago, okay?
She was...
Perfect!
And I know that she takes really good care of herself.
And I think this is a theme that we come back to over and over again.
You want to look your best at whatever age you happen to be.
And I love when it happens through natural paths.
You've done it in that way.
And I'd love to just share, because you told us a few clues to go.
So one big clue is your family, your children.
Yes.
If I'm going to make a list of anti-aging tips, I put that as number one.
If you don't mind, Alexa, and then Sailor, right?
And Jack?
Yes, well, it's actually Alexa, Jack, then Sailor.
Well, that was close.
Close, yes.
So how do they help you stay young and vital?
Oh my gosh, because, you know, literally, they have so many passions, so many things they love doing, and I just try and keep up with them, chasing along and partaking in everything that they do.
There's a lot of talent in those kids.
Alexa, you may not know, is Billy Joel's daughter, so she has it from both sides.
She inherited his talent, too, and she's actually performing for the next two weeks at the Cafe Carlisle here in Manhattan.
Well, that'd be fun.
Yeah.
That'd be a lot of fun.
So, Chrissy's next secret is her vegetarian diet, and this has been argued by many who believe it's an anti-aging secret.
I laid out, as best I could, what you typically eat in a day.
Now, you became a vegetarian when you were 17. Yeah, I mean, maybe even earlier.
I became a vegetarian early on because I read about the—my parents had a book on the table, and it was about the slaughterhouses.
And I said, I love animals.
I can't be a part of that system.
And I never ate another piece of meat again.
So it was more for ethical reasons than health reasons.
But I quickly discovered that I was getting health benefits by, you know, by being kind.
My menu is actually kind to me.
Yeah.
Let's go through it.
Since you mentioned breakfast, this is a typical way you might do it.
You actually have your dinner for breakfast, is that correct?
I love leftovers in the morning.
I find that it sustains my energy throughout the day.
My leftovers generally are some sort of grain.
Here we've got quinoa, which is a very high protein grain, and lentils.
I love lentils.
And then a very colorful diet and all the vegetables, and I mix it all together.
Sometimes I just throw a little extra oil and vinegar on it.
So if I can just remind everybody, we often have dessert for breakfast, so this avoids that problem with too much sugar in the morning.
You have a lemon juice in the morning.
Interesting because we have it as part of our total 10 rapid weight loss plan as well.
Yes.
For many different reasons we think it makes sense.
Yeah, there's so many benefits to drinking warm water with lemon in it in the morning.
The list goes on and on and on.
I can't even tell you everything, but I go, okay, let me do this while I'm heating up my coconut coffee creamer, which I put in my cafe, and then I take it over to my table and I sit and I draw on my cappuccino every day and put it on my Instagram.
I've been following this.
This is the Instagram images we're seeing here.
This is cappuccino art.
I love this U.S. flag there.
Why is this morning ritual so important for you?
You know, it's just fun.
I put my foam in there and I go, When I'm drawing a face, I start to imagine, like, what kind of person is this?
And I do a little short story next to it of who I've just drawn.
I enjoy it.
What a fascinating mind you have.
I don't know.
I just wolfed mine down.
All right, a couple other quick things for real...
You put probiotics in your berries.
Proud of you again.
Probiotics, I tell you, these keep you healthy.
You know, yes.
They really do give you immune support.
I swear by it.
I feel just energetic.
Where'd you hear about it?
Well, actually, I heard it from your show.
When your show comes on, I literally grab my paper and pencil and I just start taking notes.
And I'm like, oh yes, oh yes.
And then when the show is over, I call my health food store and I'm like, quick, can you save me a bottle of...
What?
It's already sold out?
Oh my goodness, the bad karma.
They get a run on it, you know, like the second you talk about it on the show.
You've got to be fast, right guys?
Well, you are kind.
I try to share ideas often that I hear from friends or from folks who are viewers, because often they'll have been on the cutting edge of figuring out what works for them.
And if it works for them, it makes me curious.
Yes.
Real quick, you have dinner again, similar to what you have for breakfast.
Yes.
And then this is interesting.
So for dessert, you don't skimp on dessert.
You'll have something like a frozen banana.
Yes.
Yeah, whenever my bananas start to get, you know, a little on the dark side, you know, bruised all over, that's when they're perfect.
It tastes like real ice cream, but without any of the negatives.
Obviously, external beauty is valuable to us because it reflects inner health.
But you also do things to maintain the outside of your body, the way it looks.
And this is a secret that you're going to share with all of us.
It's a specific way of exfoliating your skin and caring for it.
So if you could walk us through these.
Is it true you've exfoliated every day for 40 years?
Yes, exactly.
It's true.
I've been modeling for 40 years, and at the beginning of my career, you know, everybody always said that men look five years younger than women.
And I see an article one day about men looking five years younger than women because they shave.
And it's that daily exfoliation that's causing the faster turnover of the cells.
And so I thought, well...
I'm not going to let them have that advantage over me.
Do you shave your face?
Well, no.
No, but you know what?
Just connecting the dots.
That's happening now.
Scientists have just discovered that this, as a beauty routine for women, and they call it like planing or something like that.
Plaining their face.
But for 40 years, I've been doing this, and so one of the first things I wanted to do in my own skincare line was share the secret with everybody, which is now being proven to be very effective.
And I've made an exfoliator that has very tiny little jojoba beads that are really great.
Can I show you?
Please, please.
All right, so...
Is my skin or my face?
When I put it on...
Feel the...
I don't even like to add water.
Don't you love the feel?
I like this a lot, yes.
And I do little circles here so I'm never tugging on the skin, but I'm really like...
I'm coming along.
I'm really cleaning it all up.
Can you get my neck back here too?
Yes, yes, yes.
It feels good.
And so this is a great thing and when I'm finished doing my exfoliation, my skin feels so soft and it's so ready to accept my day cream.
And when I'm putting my day cream, which is amazing, because I love being outdoors.
I'm always outdoors.
And my whole life, I grew up a surfer girl in California.
And so I have sun damage that I want to repair.
But I also want to keep myself from further damage.
And so my skincare day...
Has the broadest spectrum sunblocks in it that you can get.
And the consistency is great under makeup, and there's no fragrance, so even you could use this every day.
I confirm there's no fragrance.
I look at your hair.
And it always looks full in every picture you've ever taken in your life.
And I think if I could just needle you a little bit on this, how do you do that?
Well, my hair used to be really, really full.
But luckily, right at about the time when stress has taken its toll, I have a line of hair extensions that, well, let me see.
These are so easy to use.
You don't sew it on.
You know, you don't glue it on.
There's three easy clips.
Can I show it on you?
You can put it on a man?
Well, I think we should see how you look with a youthful, full head of hair.
Should I do it?
All right.
I'll be the guinea pig.
All right.
So...
Clip, clip, and clip.
You have to hold your head real tight for this one.
There we go.
What do you think?
And...
We can even put two layers.
More?
But there's more.
Here we go.
And...
There's something wrong about this.
Christy Brickley, thank you very much for joining us.
You can find more anti-aging tips at DrRaz.com.
be sure to check out Kristi when she debuts her new authentic skincare line tonight at midnight on HSN.
We'll be right back.
Next, do you have an aversion to veggies?
Do foods that are good for you torment your tongue?
Whether it's the taste, temperature, or texture, we have simple methods to reprogram your taste buds to love healthier foods, even for the pickiest of eaters.
All new odds.
I wake up in the morning.
I feel horrible.
I don't get any sleep.
You think it's chronic fatigue syndrome, but it's not.
There is breaking news about this mysterious illness.
That's coming up tomorrow.
I know there are lots of kale and veggie lovers out there, but we all have people in our lives who just won't touch this stuff.
Are there taste buds getting in the way of them eating healthy foods?
Dr. Mike Dallas here, and he says there's a way to reprogram your taste buds to like healthy food.
It's going to work even for the pickiest of eaters.
Here's the feel.
We all try to reprogram our minds.
We talk about it in the show.
You argue.
Reprogram your mind to be healthy.
If you haven't reprogrammed your taste buds, it ain't gonna work.
That's right.
And Dr. Oz, I know this from my own personal experience.
Listen, I was actually addicted to food.
I had a family history of heart disease.
I had high cholesterol.
And I loved starchy food.
I loved comfort food.
I loved pasta.
I was drinking six to eight cans of soda every single day.
And when I looked at those healthier foods, my taste buds weren't in line.
So I know that you've got to get your taste buds in line with what your mind is thinking.
So how do you do that?
How do you reprogram taste buds?
So here's the key.
You have to take small baby steps.
So as you introduce these foods slowly, you're going to gradually take away the unhealthy foods.
And you also have to do something really interesting we're going to show today.
And you have to figure out, what is it about that unhealthy food that you don't like?
It's what I call the three Ts.
What I've found is that most people that I've treated have a problem with either the taste, The temperature or the texture.
If you can figure out which of those three teas you have the most problem with, you can actually fix it, and I'm gonna give you strategies for each one.
We're gonna put this in the test, everybody?
The tea test?
I wanna do this.
Here we go to Dell.
To put these teas to the test, I brought in three audience members, women who have family and friends that say their aversion to veggies is keeping them from getting healthy.
Now, they're all blindfolded, and we're going to put on soundproof headphones.
This is our Fifty Shades of Grey moment for the show.
When it's their turn to try out their mystery veggie, they get to take their headphones off so we can have a correspondence with them.
Ready to see what this thing is?
All right, ladies, if you don't mind, put on your earphones.
They're all blindfolded.
Now, audience, please, nobody say anything.
I'm going to reveal our mystery.
Shh.
Patricia and Katie have their headphones on already.
Okay, Sonia's gonna go off first.
She's gonna be trying something you call the Oreo method to identify whether she can taste this food, which I'm told she doesn't like very much.
We're gonna reprogram the first tea, the taste.
You ready to do this?
Sonia, we're with you here.
Good.
Are you nervous about this?
Not really.
As long as you don't have spiders and stuff.
Okay.
So, Dr. Mike, explain how this tea works.
So this is the Oreo method.
So you want to actually sandwich something that you don't like, an unhealthy food, and you want to put it in between something that you already like.
So it starts like this.
I heard you like nacho chips.
Is that right?
That's one of me.
Women across America are envying you right now because Dr. Oz is feeding you something that you love.
And now you are going to have a bite of the food you don't like.
Here it comes.
And then we're going to end with the food you like again.
This is sort of fun, actually.
It is.
Can I take him home?
I travel.
What was that like for you, having that unhealthy food and then the healthy food, then back to the unhealthy food?
I barely noticed the unhealthy food.
Isn't that amazing?
Yeah, so the middle part obviously was some kind of bushy something.
All right, we're going to reveal what it is.
She doesn't know what it is.
It is...
Oh, I'm serious.
Alright, I can do that.
I can do that.
Something you don't like.
But listen, you actually did it today, and you actually didn't even mind it.
Isn't that interesting with the blindfold on?
Yeah, I barely tasted it.
That's cool.
I can do that.
Yeah.
I can do that.
I can see you now.
Yes, you can see us.
Okay.
Thank you.
Our next taste tester is Patricia.
Hi, Patricia.
Hi.
Patricia, and I just want to make sure...
Just making sure she can't see.
They're very, very sly, these ladies.
Alright, so the next T stands for temperature.
Yeah.
And if you don't mind, explain to everybody, what is it about temperature that's so important to reprogram your taste buds?
Well, listen, what are comfort foods when we think about the temperature?
They're all hot, right?
So we love hot pizza, we love hot pasta, but we don't like those vegetables, which tend to be not only bitter, but they tend to be cold.
Most Americans are not eating nearly enough vegetables, so you have to Help yourself out.
Again, Dr. Owls, here comes the plane.
By actually warming up.
Here it comes.
And it's in the form of a warm soup.
Okay.
Tastes good.
Yeah.
What does it taste like to you?
Oh, gosh.
I have no clue.
This is fantastic.
Isn't that amazing?
She doesn't even taste it.
I don't eat vegetables.
You hate vegetables.
I heard that.
There it is.
What is it?
Cauliflower.
Oh, wow.
Interesting.
So does the temperature make a big difference to you?
It does.
It does.
I like comfort foods.
I like my steak.
I like my potatoes.
I like soup.
So this is perfect.
And so this is a great strategy for you.
So if you can actually warm a lot of your vegetables, you can do soups.
You can put them in casseroles.
You can do all sorts of things.
You can grill them with a little olive oil.
And this is going to help you.
All the foods you just mentioned, none of them are great for you, right?
And you're not eating vegetables.
These vegetables into your life.
Okay.
Awesome.
Deal?
Yes.
Awesome.
Thank you.
Taste.
Temperature.
Katie's headphones are coming off.
The last T is for texture.
Because veggies have interesting textures, sometimes not things we like, but the foods we do like always have texture that we adore.
How do you change that?
Well, listen, again, all of those comfort foods and all of those processed foods especially, they have sort of a taste.
They're creamy.
There's a lot of ingredients that make them taste sort of very different than what nature intended us to eat.
And when we think of vegetables, they have a very crispy taste.
Bitter, but also the way it crunches in your mouth.
So, this is a strategy I use.
Now, I do a similar strategy, and it is taking something, here comes the plane, something that you love, grilled cheese, and we actually made the bread from this mystery vegetable.
How's that taste?
It's actually really good.
It tastes like a grilled cheese.
It's cheesy, warm, salty, everything I love.
All right.
Isn't that amazing?
This is actually cauliflower with a little cheese.
No way.
Isn't that amazing?
So we actually made the bread with cauliflower that's not real bread with a slice of cheese in it.
So again, you're taking something you love and you're just adding something healthier.
Good.
You know what I do this with?
This is really good, but all joking aside.
I can't believe it.
I do macaroni and cheese, my favorite food, and this is great for kids, with broccoli and cauliflower.
So again, it's all about mixing it up, and if you do this, you can get those healthy vegetables into your life, and they're going to help you in so many ways.
Would you try this at home?
Yeah, you know what?
I would love to sneak this in on my kids.
It's a great strategy.
They're just as bad as I am.
Don't forget their mother.
Thank you very much.
Wonderful advice.
Thanks, Dr. Oz.
Appreciate it.
You can get the full plan to reprogram your taste buds on DrOz.com.
We'll be right back.
The new trend every exhausted woman should be trying.
A great way to fight fatigue while boosting immunity and hydrating your body.
A broth with unique nutrients to help you sleep better and have more energy the next day.
All about bone broth.
Next.
Put down your coffee, toss your energy drink, and stop with the soda.
There's a new way to fight fatigue.
It's bone broth.
And it's the trend every exhausted woman should be trying.
This is not a line for cupcakes or cronuts.
It's for bone broth.
New York City restaurant Brodo serves up this hot new energy-boosting alternative to your standard morning coffee.
It's very rich in flavor.
I tried the ginger one and it really makes me feel energized.
Bone broth is invigorating.
Gives me superhuman energy.
I was really sick with chronic fatigue syndrome and I can immediately feel my immune system starting to work.
Chef Marco Canora is the mastermind who cooked up the recipe for Brodo's bone broth.
Broth has so many benefits.
It's really good for hair, skin, nails.
It's also good to rebuild your gut.
Instead of tea, instead of coffee, have a cup of delicious, nutritious bone broth.
Rethink your hot beverage.
Registered dietician and holistic nutritionist Esther Blum tells her patients to drink bone broth because it's helped her energy.
So how does it work to fight fatigue, do you think?
So, Dr. Oz, bone broth has been my go-to morning elixir every morning because it's hydrating, it's rich in amino acids that are easy to digest and trace minerals, and it also promotes an incredible night's sleep.
And there's even research to show that chicken broth actually boosts immune function, so it's a great take-home for immune function.
And how much do you have to drink to get the benefit?
So I recommend one to two cups a day.
And I recommend that you replace your morning coffee with it to energize you throughout the day.
And then in the afternoon, around 3 o'clock, when you hit that slump, you have another cup and you're guaranteed a good night's sleep the next night.
Take a look at how it's made.
This is Esther's recipe.
Again, we don't know a lot about this yet among physicians, but I'm intrigued.
I'm seeing these shops pop up a little bit.
So show us how you would make it.
Yeah, so this is about the size of my crock pot at home.
It's a seven quart stock pot.
And what I do is I get three pounds of bones.
It can be cow, it can be chicken, it can be oxtail.
I love knuckle and neck.
And I put them, you can help me out here if you like.
I put the bones, there you go, strong man.
Put these in, all in, okay.
And you're going to put in a quarter cup of this.
I do it all myself.
There you go.
Put in a quarter cup of vinegar.
Now vinegar pulls out the trace minerals from these bones and actually pulls the collagen into the broth.
So you want to let that sit there for a good 30 minutes and let it go to work.
Just with the vinegar?
Just with the vinegar.
But the bone's not all underneath the vinegar.
Just that it's...
That's right, and you can rotate them and you can flip them around, but just let them sit there for a good 30 minutes.
Then you're going to help me pick up, your arms are longer, pick up the vegetables, pour them in as well, and into that you're going to put a tablespoon, and you don't even have to cut all these up, you're going to put a tablespoon of sea salt and 16 cups of water, and then you're going to put it on low.
We do not want to boil our bone broth because that destroys the incredible collagen molecules in there.
You're gonna cook it overnight at least 19 hours.
Now, if you don't have a slow cooker, you can do this on the stove top low as well.
But you don't want it boiling, not even simmering, just hot.
Not even simmering, just hot.
Okay, so after 19 hours, now you can strain it so it becomes a broth or you can leave your vegetables in.
But you're gonna want to, why don't you pour yourself some and take a taste.
This is real broth, baby.
Take a taste.
It's delicious.
It should be earthy and smoky and rich.
Now, if you want to get a real earthquake...
I used to have this as a kid, by the way.
You did, right?
Yeah, they served us in Turkey.
It's incredible.
So if you want to get a real smoky flavor, you can also roast the bones ahead of time.
So once you're done with the bones, you're going to actually save them, and you're going to reuse them again.
Now, three pounds of bones cost about $9.
So if you do the math and you use your bones twice, it's less than 50 cents a cup to make it at home.
So it's super economical.
So you're going to save the bones, let them cool, store them in a Ziploc in the freezer.
Use them twice.
You can use them twice.
And I see you've strained some bone broth here, but why do you have to freeze it?
Yes.
Well, it keeps fresh in the refrigerator for five days, but if you're gonna go longer until you use it, then you're gonna store it in mason jars.
And this is very space-saving in a small New York City or anywhere, a small refrigerator.
Or you can use ice cube trays.
Now, another great feature of bone broth, if you want to get the nutrition, you can just pop out one or two cubes when you're heating up rice or, you know, any sauces.
I like to put in my vegetables when I steam them, so you're constantly getting the nutrition every day.
Now, I mentioned that when I was a child, I was experiencing this because it's something that's done culturally in Turkey.
But actually, this is not a new idea.
There are many cultures in which it was pretty common.
So if you don't mind, walk us through.
This looks like chicken soup.
This is chicken soup.
Jewish penicillin.
My grandmother made this growing up.
And I like to put in lots of fresh dill to sweeten the dill.
And I like to put in fresh parsley.
And parsley is just such a great breath freshener and liver-supporting nutrient as well.
And what's this?
And this is Sopa del Lima.
It is Yucatan bone broth, and it has fresh cilantro.
Now fresh cilantro binds to metal, so it's a wonderful nutrient.
It's a chelator as well.
It's a chelator.
And then fresh lime juice.
Now, what I love about all of these bone broths is they're a blank template, so you never get bored.
You can just constantly re-season them any way you want.
So really flavorful.
And finally, this is a French boule base, I guess.
This is fresh boule base, which again, if you're pescatarian or you just want to break from the richness of the bones, but you want something that is equally nutritious, then you just boil the shells and you get this flavorful, hearty fish broth.
And in Turkey, they make it from lamb because there are more lamb and sheep than humans in Turkey.
That's what it looks like, actually, when you actually served it in a restaurant there.
It's called nose to tail.
In all the little villages, you'd be able to feed the entire part of the animal.
So I want to think about this.
In Turkey, they use it as a hangover cure, just to keep it in the back of your mind, in case you make that mistake.
I could see that.
So Esther actually worked with one of our viewers, Jewel, to help her use bone broth for her fatigue.
How are you, Jewel?
I'm fine.
How are you?
Were you skeptical at first?
Not really.
I mean, my husband's from the Caribbean, so she mentioned oxtails, so I'm kind of used to...
And how did it work for you, for your energy?
It worked good.
I mean, it substituted my coffee.
I did everything.
After I drank it, it did everything for me that my coffee would do.
I got rid of fatigue.
Normally, when I don't drink coffee, I get a headache.
I didn't get a headache with this.
I was able to function during the day, so I was focused.
So it was good.
Well, I'm very happy to work for this.
Give it a try.
We don't know much about it yet, but I'm willing to, you know, experiment a little bit because it's been used in so many cultures for so many years.
Thanks, Joel.
No problem.
Wonderful bunch.
Thank you.
We'll be right back.
Next, are you burning up?
Do you get frequent hot flashes and night sweats and you're not even going through menopause?
Breaking news, hot flashes can last up to 14 years.
Find out what you can do now for relief and stop feeling debilitating.
Coming up.
All new odds.
I wake up in the morning.
I feel horrible.
I don't get any sleep.
You think it's chronic fatigue syndrome, but it's not.
There is breaking news about this mysterious illness.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Welcome to my show.
The media is burning up with reactions to the big news about hot flashes.
Here's the news.
Up to 14 years of hot flashes found in menopause study.
Can you imagine?
Women have a lot to say on the topic.
For example, Hoda Kotfi on the Today Show said, people always ask us why we wear sleeveless.
And we're like, well, if you knew, you'd understand.
And some even experienced hot flashes on air, like Whoopi Goldberg.
She said, you know what?
I just had a big old hot flash and my underwear is wet.
I was very honest of her.
We used to think that menopausal women suffered hot flashes for at most a few years.
But a new study says that's not the case.
And who is suffering the most?
African American and Hispanics.
The news has sparked women everywhere to open up about their experiences.
You gotta be kidding me.
14 years?
Did you say years?
Years?
What?
Are you kidding me?
My husband's already dealing with PMS every month.
I can't imagine him dealing with hot flashes for 14 years.
When a hot flash is coming on, it's coming out of everything I have.
My cold, my That's it.
You'll be, like, really, really warm, and then you're freezing.
I wake up, drenched, soaking wet, and it's just about all night long.
Sometimes I'm stripping at work, and, you know, I can't be stripping at work for 14 years.
Can you imagine me walking around 14 years with hot flashes?
I'll be walking with a cane going, I'm hot!
I'm hot!
14 years?
No thank you.
I've done my job.
These ladies are not alone in the Health Breakdown News.
I brought in OBGYN and author, Dr. Lauren Stryker.
So why is this study so important?
It's important because not only was this the largest study, 1,500 women, but also the most diverse.
So we could really find out not just how long hot flashes really last, but who's most affected.
And while certainly it looked at ethnicity, which is very important, we also learned a lot of other things.
For example, if you start menopause younger, you're likely to suffer more.
But I got to tell you, this just validated not only what gynecologists know, but every menopausal woman knows.
This whole mantra of, don't worry, it's just going to be a couple years.
And then women come in to me year after year and say, you think I'm done yet?
You know, three, four, five, six, seven years.
So this was not a surprise, but it was good to validate this information.
So you touched on ethnicity.
Why is it that African American and Hispanic women have a bigger problem with this than whites and Asian women?
Yeah, it's really not clear if this is genetic or maybe it's in the diet.
Because clearly, Asian women, who are the least to be affected, have a very different diet than Hispanic women.
But I kind of don't buy that because this study was done in the U.S. And everyone's kind of eating everything at this point.
And I look at my patients.
I have a lot of African-American patients who are the ones who are supposed to have the biggest problem.
And they are thin.
They are fit.
They are eating right.
And I had one woman last week that said, oh my god, I am flashing 40 to 50 times a day just like my mother was.
And this woman weighed 110 pounds and is a marathon runner.
So I think genetics definitely trumps diet.
Why do you think we're hearing about this now?
I mean, are women experiencing it truly more or something changed?
You know, there is no question.
Your grandmother, your great-grandmother, your great-great-grandmother, they all had hot flashes.
But there are two things that are different.
One is we're living longer.
The average age of menopause has not changed.
It's 51. But we're living well into our 80s.
So what that means is we've got 30 to 40 years experiencing this, about one-third of our life.
The other difference is Is our great-grandmothers, if they did live that long, well they weren't doctors, they weren't lawyers, they weren't TV producers.
When they were in their 60s, they were sitting home baking cookies.
And we have women that need to function.
And it is not appropriate to tell these women who cannot get a decent night's sleep that they should do some yoga and dress in layers.
So they're saying, help me.
I have got to be able to think clearly.
You mentioned a patient with yours that was thin and had hot flashes.
Do you think obesity is tied to this at all?
There's no question that that is one of the factors.
And we know there are a bunch of things beyond ethnicity, beyond timing of menopause, and obesity is a big one.
We also know for some women certain foods are triggers.
It might be alcohol, it might be red wine, it might be caffeine.
So there are many variables that go into this equation, but I think the number one thing that women need to know is that this is gonna last in general more than two to three years and there are solutions and you don't need to suffer.
Thank you very much.
For more info on how you can relieve your hot flashes check out Dr. Stryker's book Sex Rx.
We'll be right back.

Did I get it right?
There's no running from the truth.
We're all going to get a little older.
However, there's something you can do right now to look and feel great while you do it.
It's the power of Pilates.
It can help anti-age your body from head to toe.
Join me on Liana, Lisa, and Malisha.
These are three self-described, I didn't say this, they're calling themselves Pilates virgins.
They've never tried it before.
So what do you know about Pilates?
Well, I know that celebrities do it, and it's very expensive.
I know they have some crazy machines out there, and they look very intimidating, so I kind of stay away.
So what do you do right now to keep so youthful?
Well, I'm kind of active, but I try to go to the gym, but I'm up and down.
It's never frequent, you know, on a regular basis.
So I'm going to bust your myths about Pilates, because it's not just for rich people.
And it's not a crazy thing you've got to go to a gym for.
You actually can do it at home.
You can learn all about it.
Come on over.
Pilates guru, Richie Masterscusa, says, this routine will help us feel younger and look better for years to come.
So take your spots on the mat there.
Richie, welcome to the show.
All right, so you just heard it.
It's for rich people.
You've got to have big machines.
It's crazy, convoluted.
You've got to get social people to teach it to you.
You actually argue it's not true at all.
You can do it right now at home.
Absolutely.
The price of Pilates is different now.
With group classes, it makes it much more affordable and accessible for everybody and every body.
Explain to me specifically, when you're doing it, how do you think about the body?
What specifically are you changing?
Well, there are four planes of movement that the healthy body needs to move in to stay young.
We have flexion, we have extension, we have side bending, and we have rotation.
With Pilates, you're gonna improve your flexibility, you're gonna strengthen your core, and you're gonna increase your range of motion.
It just gets rid of that old feeling, you know?
Okay, you got three exercises.
We're all gonna do this together.
I haven't done these yet either, so we're gonna find out.
I'm gonna kick my shoes off here.
Don't get hurt.
All right, good.
All right, show us the first one.
Okay, the first exercise is bridging.
So, we're going to sit down, ladies, and Dr. Oz.
And we're gonna put our hands behind our thighs and we're gonna round the spine down.
Now breathing is the number one principle in Pilates.
So we gotta breathe.
We inhale through your nose and we exhale through the mouth and you lift the hips up to the sky, keeping those ribs in.
Now we take an inhale and exhale.
We round the spine down like a string of pearls, dropping one pearl at a time back onto the mat.
And now we do that again.
We take an inhale and we exhale.
We pick the hips up.
And now we're working the glutes, the hamstrings, the core, the spine.
It's a four-in-one exercise.
And take an inhale and exhale.
We're going to round the spine down, dropping one.
This feels good, actually.
Yeah.
Surprising.
And take an inhale and exhale.
We're going to do one more.
And pick the hips up.
Now hold it.
Now you're doing so fierce, you're gonna get a bonus.
A booty bonus!
Drop the hips halfway down and pulse the hips up six times, tightening the booty.
One, two, tighten three, four, five.
Now hold it, hold it!
And you're gonna roll the spine all the way down.
There's your booty blast, ladies.
Excellent.
Stay there.
Stay here?
Yes, stay right there.
The second exercise is called the hundreds prep.
This is for your core.
This is strength in your core, which will keep your spine nice and healthy.
Bring the arms up to the ceiling.
And you're gonna take an inhale.
As you exhale, press the arms down.
The head follows the hands and bring the arms all the way down to the mat.
Deepen those abs.
Take an inhale and exhale, rounding down.
The head follows the hands all the way down.
We're gonna do that again.
Ready?
Take an inhale, exhale, pressing down deep in the abs, strengthening that core.
This is gonna keep us nice and young and healthy.
And now rolling all the way down.
And that's the second exercise, the hundreds prep.
Let me call it a hundreds.
You would do a hundred doing it.
That's the prep.
And then this more advanced exercise is we do the hundreds.
So that was the prep to the hundreds.
I like the prep.
Excellent.
So now we're going to go on to the third exercise.
We're going to sit up, ladies.
Okay.
And we're going to cross our legs.
This exercise is called the sitting rotation.
Okay.
And we're going to bring the arms out to the side.
Yep.
To a letter T. Drop those shoulders.
Now I'm gonna practice the breath.
Sniff, sniff through the nose.
And exhale through the mouth.
Now we're gonna twist the spine to the left and we're gonna double pulse.
Sniff, sniff.
And to the center.
To the right.
Sniff, sniff.
To the center.
To the left.
Sniff, sniff.
To the center.
One more.
To the right.
To the center.
You're gonna put your left hand down and you're gonna reach the right arm up and over like you're going up and over a beach ball.
And come up.
And now we're gonna put the right hand down, reach the left arm up and over.
And come all the way up.
Now this helps you increase your range of motion.
Very important to not lose our range of motion as we get older.
And specific muscles, again, most of these are targeting multiple areas of work?
Yes, it's targeting our core, our rotation, our side bending.
When you do these exercises, how long does it take to do a whole routine?
Well, we like to do a half hour routine.
It's great.
An hour Pilates class is perfect.
But you can do these exercises every day, in the morning, before you go to work.
You can get five, ten minutes, just get some of these exercises out of your system.
What do you think, ladies?
Leanna, what do you think?
This is awesome.
I'm definitely going to do this.
Do Pilates versions like it?
What did you like the most?
The butt.
I need to get my butt.
Of course.
I knew they'd go for the butt.
Here's the deal.
We'll do this.
If everyone's willing to, we're going to record something for you at home.
We're going to do this exercise.
The way you do it at home with, again, no fees, no memberships, no nothing.
Go to DrOz.com.
You'll find the video there.
All happy?
We'll be right back.
Thank you very much.
Welcome to DrOz.com.
All new Oz.
I wake up in the morning.
I feel horrible.
I don't get any sleep.
You think it's chronic fatigue syndrome, but it's not.
There is breaking news about this mysterious illness.
The new disease really causing your exhaustion.
This condition is real.
It is not fake.
It is not made up.
The five questions every woman should ask herself.
Plus, how to master your mood swings.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Now it's time for, in case you missed it, first, supermodel Christy Brinkley shares her diet, beauty, and anti-aging secrets.
Here's one tip that I love.
Dinner for breakfast.
For example, this is a typical breakfast for Christy.
Greens, quinoa, some lentil on this.
You don't need to wait until the evening to enjoy these superfoods.
And I want you to stop having dessert for breakfast.
Eat like this.
You look like Christy.
By the way, she has lemon water in the morning, which is what we talk about in Total 10. The Rapid Weight Loss Plan, we think a lot of this, and she does as well.
So, how do you trick your taste buds so you actually crave healthy food?
It's called the Oreo method.
We talked about it.
Let's say you're not a fan of cauliflower, but you love cheesy nachos, which I gather you all do, right?
If I passed these out, I wouldn't have any come back to me.
Alright, take a bite of the chip.
Oh, they're so good.
Don't you wish you had one?
All right, then you take a cauliflower, and you bite the cauliflower, and then another bite of the chip.
By the time you're done, you'll be associating good foods with the ones you don't like so much.
You're gonna challenge yourself, and when you get the delicious taste in your mouth, you'll have more of these.
Next, for anyone who thinks Pilates can only be done with those elaborate machines at a fancy studio, I want you to think again.
You can get the power of Pilates with simple moves in your own home.
I'm gonna demonstrate one.
This is called the Mini Swan.
Moving forward.
Feet on the ground.
Then roll your chin up like you're rolling a marble just to stretch up like this.
Extend your spine.
It counteracts all that hunching you do when you're on computers and phones all day long.
This routine will help you look younger and feel better for years.
You can find the whole routine at DrOz.com.
Take advantage of it.
And finally, please be careful of dubious people online that make it seem like I'm endorsing their products because they don't.
