Time Text
Pair.
Banana.
Remember those old body shapes you used to have?
We're tossing those out and rewriting the book.
I'm giving you a whole new way to look at your body.
Find out which one you are to maximize weight loss results and what to eat for your body type.
This actually looks like a pancake, doesn't it?
Plus, how this pair of jeans can make any body type look 10 pounds thinner.
That makes you look amazing!
Coming up next on Oz.
We'll save lives today.
Oh We are ready to get healthy Welcome Today's show is all about...
Thank you.
The show is all about how no two of you are the same.
So I have specific advice tailored just for you throughout the entire hour.
First, what should be your new body type?
And what should you eat for that new body type?
Remember those old body shapes you used to have?
You know, the banana, the apple, the strawberry, the pear?
You remember that, right?
Yeah.
Right?
They're so last year.
Today, I'm giving you a whole new way to look at your body.
For the first time, we're giving you four new body types based on the latest scientific research and knowing yours can help you maximize your weight loss.
And I've got the Curvanista.
She is back.
Thank you.
You all love her.
She's showing you how to maximize your genes to look 10 pounds thinner and sleeker.
And for everyone giving up sugar this year, and there are many of you, we have the easiest plan yet to break your sugar habit without losing your mind.
I know you all worry about that because they sometimes go together.
Let's get started with the new body types.
Everybody in my studio audience today is holding up a piece of fruit.
Hold them up, guys.
It represents your body type.
Let me just...
Who wants to talk about their...
I'll start with you because you sat so close to me.
What's your first name?
Vanessa.
Vanessa, you holding up a...
Apple.
And what do you think about being identified as an apple?
I don't like it.
I don't want to be an apple.
What do you want to be?
A banana?
A banana!
No, I just want to be fit.
I don't want to be a fruit at all.
That's one of the challenges, right?
We get pushed into this tiny little bucket or box in the shape of a fruit, and you think you're stuck there.
Who else wants to talk about their body shape?
We got a couple up here.
How about you, ma'am?
What do you got there?
I've got a pear.
A pear?
Yes.
Is that a thing that makes you happy or not?
No, it makes it very hard to find pants that fit.
Yeah.
Clothes are not made for pears.
No, they're not.
All right, so here's the thing.
A lot of folks have a lot of...
Hold up again one more time.
Lots of different things that you're holding.
And the fact of the matter is I don't want you pigeonholed in there anymore.
In fact, what we're going to do today is very unique.
We're going to ask you to toss away what that fruit represents by throwing it at me.
Don't hit me.
Hit the bucket.
Are you ready?
You got shots?
You might want to stand.
People throw better when they stand.
Get up.
Stand up.
All right.
You start it off here.
Throw it up there.
Now.
Let's go.
Throw it up.
Oh.
Whoa.
Oh, jeez.
Stop, stop, stop.
All right.
That's enough.
All right.
Listen.
Gently pass your fruit.
The remaining ones over the aisles.
We'll give these all the city harvest.
We're not throwing anything away.
But I do want you in your minds to cleanse the idea that you're a pear or an apple or, frankly, any other piece of fruit.
Defining our body type by using a piece of fruit is an out- Dated, shorthand, it doesn't really tell us much, except it reminds us what our flaws are.
So my med unit poured through the latest research because we know more than ever about why your fat deposits where it does.
So here's the question for all of you.
Which new body type are you?
Take a look.
Stand in front of the mirror.
Where's the largest concentration of your body fat?
You carry weight around your midsection, between your chest and hip bone.
If so, you may be the stress type.
Turn!
Do you see pinchable fat on the side?
AKA love handles?
Then you might be the sugar type.
Fat around your hips, butt and thighs?
Maybe you're the estrogen type.
Raise your arms.
Excess skin under there?
You could be the T type.
The science is it.
Knowing which of these four new body types fits you can help you maximize your weight loss results.
So look at these types again.
It's important to know which one you are.
You can be a combination of more than one.
I'm going to post the quiz on DrRoz.com as well so you can find yourself.
Now that you know your new body type, What you eat to maximize your weight results can be determined.
Now, if you're on this, you know, this diet we've got, the day-off diet that's so popular, then this works for you too.
We made some small little tweaks for each body type so you can fit into the day-off diet.
Let's start with the stress type.
These are the people who hold the fat around their belly.
How are you?
Christina?
Good to meet you.
Thanks for being here.
Thanks for talking about this.
Sure.
So some people would have called you an apple in the past.
Some would have called you some other kind of fruit.
Who cares?
We're not talking about a whole different way of defining you.
It's a stress type.
So explain if you can to me how stress affects the way you eat and the way you feel about your body.
So whenever I feel a little stressed out, I'm always snacking.
So I snack at all different times of the day, sometimes at night, sometimes night before I go to bed.
I'm always snacking, munching on something, and then, you know, the pounds come on and They land right here.
It does.
In the middle.
Can I just explain one thing?
When I show this to Lavitar, this is not pinchable fat.
Right.
This is fat that's actually deep under the muscle.
It's fat around the organs.
You all clear on that?
It's really important to determine.
And the reason you get this kind of weight is because of the stress.
Right.
And yes, the stress makes you eat things you shouldn't, but the stress also very specifically makes you put cortisol out.
The cortisol says, whoa, wait a minute, you're going to be in a bad situation.
Things aren't good.
Maybe it's like a famine.
So store all the calories and put them around my intestines, around my liver, so I've got myself protected.
So although your body's trying to help, it's doing the wrong thing for you, it creates this stress-type collection of fat, which tends to be sort of dangerous because it leaves so many of the issues that we fear, things like heart disease and life.
We don't want that.
So, your solution is pretty simple.
You're going to try, if you can, to eat carbohydrates, but the right kind, because they're going to soothe you, and you're going to want that warm.
You know why?
Think about this.
The carbs, of course, we all know that.
It makes more of that feel-good hormone serotonin, but the warmth also soothes you and helps de-stress you.
So, what I'm asking you to do is do the regular things that are good for your body, but add to it something to address what your main problem is, which is the stress.
So, come over here.
I've got a little idea for you.
This could be your breakfast going forward.
I sort of took one of our day-off diet morning smoothies and I modified it.
Okay.
So it's a little bit of, you know, some yogurt.
This is almond butter.
Some flax seeds that have been, you know, squashed or they've been ground up.
Right?
The banana.
Then you're going to add some oatmeal.
Okay.
Oatmeal is a complex carbohydrate.
Okay.
It's not going to rush into your bloodstream.
Not going to panic your body.
Okay.
But it's soothing.
And then you're going to microwave it for a minute.
And when you do that, you've got this.
A morning smoothie that's an antidote to the stress-type weight gain that so many folks complain about.
Give it a taste to see if you enjoy it.
And if you don't enjoy it, modify it so it works for you.
Is it stuck in there?
Well, you can pretend.
I was pretending.
This is your pretend.
I was like, "Why are we pretending?" All right, here.
I'm gonna modify it.
Here.
I'm trying to help.
It's okay.
No, it's all right.
But I would add more cinnamon to this.
There are things we can do to make them juice it up a tiny bit.
It's a little tart, yeah, but it's yummy.
But this is the kind of thing you want to do to relax yourself.
Stop penalizing yourself and realize, I deal with the stress, with a little bit of nudge with the right foods, and all of a sudden, I can make myself look the way I want to look.
Thanks for starting this stuff.
You game?
Thank you.
All right.
So coming back, that's just one.
Therefore, we're going to talk about the most popular body type of all and how to maximize weight loss there and all the other ones as well.
Stay with us.
That would be me.
We look at three more body types to find out just what you need to be eating to lose that weight.
Open your mouth.
We answer 99 of your biggest food questions, starting with artificial food coloring.
Why are so many dyes banned outside the U.S.? Should you be worried?
There are about half a million that we estimate are probably affected by food dyes.
Wait till you see what else we uncovered.
Plus, should you put ketchup in the fridge?
What's really in fat-free half and half?
Does bacteria grow in your slow cooker?
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Which body type fits you?
Weight around the midsection?
Stress type.
Love handles?
Sugar type.
Hip, butt, and thigh fat?
Estrogen type.
Excess skin under the arm?
T-type.
Know which body type fits you and maximize your weight loss results.
Because no two of you are the same, what do you eat for your body type to maximize your weight loss?
Let's move on to the sugar type, those who hold the fat around their middle, and they have a little bit of those love handles.
Valerie volunteered herself as being the sugar type.
Do you love sugar?
I do, yes.
What's your favorite sweet?
Oh, chocolate.
Yes.
Dripping, oozing chocolate.
All the time.
All right, so here's the deal.
The problem with sugar is insulin.
If it wasn't for the darn insulin, it wouldn't be a big deal.
But when you have a lot of sugar, the insulin has to deal with it.
And when you make more insulin, guess what it does?
It says store the sugar as fat.
And it then very meticulously goes to certain parts of your body.
In many cases, it'll become those love handles.
Yeah.
So to deal with it, you have to use sugaring, lowering techniques.
And so these are my specialty.
Oh, yeah.
But this actually looks like a pancake, doesn't it?
Yes.
Please taste this.
And as you're tasting, I'll describe what this is.
This, my friends, is a mashed banana with two eggs.
Then I put a little cinnamon on there.
Again, there's no flour.
Isn't that good?
Yes.
Who would have thought?
Eggs and banana look like a pancake.
And with this, you won't have the problem with the insulin.
The other thing you can do is replace the taste so you don't need the sugar.
So garlic and oregano and sage.
These are herbs that take you in a different direction than sugar so you won't feel compelled to put sugar in your body.
Okay.
You do this, you take attention to some of the day-off diet ideas, and you'll see the fat coming off, especially at the love handle area.
Awesome.
Good luck to you.
Thank you.
All right.
Next.
I promised you all the most popular type would be mentioned, and that happens to be the estrogen type.
These are folks who store their fat around their hips and their thighs.
And Stacy, you're very honorable to come up here, but you were holding a pair earlier, I understand.
Yes, I was.
So, folks, when the childbearing years are progressing, you will often not only have a lot of estrogen, but you'll have strong PMS symptoms as well, if you're one of these estrogen storage people.
I do.
I have very bad PMS. I get tired too.
I'm tired and I want to overeat and not eat these foods that are sitting here.
Why would I put these foods here?
These are vegetables, right?
But they're not just any vegetable.
And here's the big story.
If you want to deal with the estrogen, You actually have to deal with the foods you're eating because they can help block the estrogen.
So come on back here.
You know on the broad diet plans that we're offering, like the day off diet as an example, what I love to do is eat non-starchy veggies because you can eat as much of the stuff as you want.
All these great things, the asparagus, the bamboo shoots, the bees, however, however.
This bottom column here, the bottom row, these are the cruciferous vegetables.
And they very specifically seem to help us deal with estrogen levels.
So if you eat the Brussels sprouts, the broccoli, the cabbage, the cauliflower, the daikon, kale, eternal.
Find these and make them part of what you're eating.
And we'll put some recipes up on DrRoz.com to help.
I'd love that.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
All right, finally.
The T-type.
Those are the folks who have trouble building muscle, and they therefore have a little excess flab and skin on their arms, and Robin is here to help with this.
That would be me.
Yeah, you can all do it right.
I won't put the arms up.
I think they're in a T right here.
And you can find yourselves in this.
The T types, you know, we're the shape of T. We put our arms out, but the T actually stands for testosterone.
They tend to have low muscle mass without a ton of muscle.
Make the arms really get more tight.
Without a ton of muscle here, you'll leave room for this.
And so we want to build muscle.
And you don't want to take testosterone to do that.
So the question is, how do you actually have it happen?
And a big problem for a lot of Americans is they don't have enough vitamin D, and that impacts on their testosterone levels.
Okay.
So I want you to include foods, include a tool to get you more vitamin D. You can go out in the sun a little bit if you want as well, but it's hard to do, especially in the winter months.
So I want you, for lunch or dinner, a couple times a week, to include a protein that has vitamin D. Classically, these are cold water fish, so salmon, sardines.
Do you like sardines?
I've not ever had sardines.
You haven't?
Never.
Well, we have an alerting opportunity here.
Yes, we do.
Here.
Open your mouth.
All right.
I'll do it.
Oh, come on now.
You all know that trick.
These are real sardines.
That's a raw sardine.
I'm not going to give that to you.
But I do want you to try this.
I will.
And go ahead.
Take that.
I like to eat it this way.
With my fingers.
I know some people taste cat food when they taste this, but it's not true.
I like it.
It's pretty good.
It's not bad at all.
And it's got vitamin D in it.
Now, if you can't do that, you probably need a vitamin D supplement.
So the folks who are the teas, one way or the other, supplement's probably the safest, but one way or another, get your vitamin D levels in there.
Okay.
Thank you very much for that.
Now, here's the deal.
I'm going to power up this plan by posting an exercise guide to target all four body types on my Facebook page and Pinterest board.
That's what it looks like.
Make sure you share this with your family and your friends.
Do those little activities to support the foods that you eat differently, and you'll be able to customize your program for your body type.
You can also find the day-off diet plan at dros.com.
Up next, the new jean buying trick that will allow you to bypass the fitting room and guarantee you a pair of jeans that will make you look 10 pounds thinner, no matter your body type.
Coming up next, do away with your denim anxieties with the Curvanista, her ultimate guide to find the right pair of jeans that target your trouble spots.
Insider secrets to make you look great.
Well, now that tummy is gone, honey.
Next.
Today's show is all about how no two of you are the same.
And this couldn't be more obvious than when we're trying on jeans in the fitting room.
You've all been there, right?
You get in there, it fits everyone else but you.
So it seems, but we're going to give you the ultimate guide to find the right pair of jeans that work for your body and can make any body type look 10 pounds thinner.
And here to help do away with your denim anxiety is style and beauty expert, Denise Caldwell.
She's also known as the Pervenista.
So please, as a secret to buying the right jeans for your right body type are to look at the label.
That's something important because you can do that over the web.
You don't have to be in a store to do that.
Absolutely.
So what does it say that's so important?
So first off, I just want to say thank you for finding another way to describe women's body types other than fruit.
I feel like we've evolved so much and we're more complicated than that.
Much, much.
I know that.
So there is a science to denim and sometimes basically it's the hidden secret that's in your tag.
It can tell you what the fabric of your jean is made of.
So I have a few different options here to show you with the body types that you know we're describing how much stretch is in your jean can fit for your body type.
So this one here it basically has about one percent spandex in it.
This is for the lady who carries a lot of her weight in her hip So the 1% really just helps to get them over that hip.
Everybody know what I'm talking about.
You're jumping in, you're trying to get in over that hip, but you don't want too much stretch because you don't want that gaping in the back of your jean.
The dreaded gaping.
Exactly.
It fits the hip, but it doesn't fit the waist.
And then it fits the waist, but it doesn't get over those hips.
So then this 1% is great for that.
Then the 2%, which still will have the cotton or the polyester in it as well, will have a little bit more stretch.
This is for my ladies who have a little tummy.
And the ultimate, the 3%.
The ultimate, now that's what I got on too.
3%.
You see how you're pulling?
And you can pull it a little more, Dr. Axe.
There you go.
It stretches.
And that elasticity in it really helps you if you have a tummy.
And you also have those hips love handles as well.
So, here's what we decided to do.
Denise looked around and she found three people in the audience.
Three women.
Who were identified before the show.
So she worked her magic and is revealing how she made each look 10 pounds thinner.
So we're going to start with the stress type.
Remember, they put the fat in the front.
These folks have not pinchable fat, but fat deep inside of themselves.
So I'm going to get a picture to you of Becky.
Becky, there she is before, complained that she was a stress type weight gainer.
And Denise, please show us how you made her 10 pounds thinner.
Becky, come on now, please.
Whoa!
Becky, you look good.
Thanks.
So walk us through this, Denise.
Absolutely.
So with Becky, obviously she was holding, you know, her weight in her tummy area.
Well, now that tummy is gone, honey.
She is insta-slim.
Insta-slim.
And the fit of the jean here is fitted with a little bit of flair at the bottom.
And why this works is because when it's fitted up at the top, you know, this is a mid-rise, so it's hitting her right at that tummy, giving you that dissection right there.
And then also for fashion, you know, all over the runways, the 70s are back, baby.
So this also works with it, too.
It's been all over the runways.
I could bring out my clothes from the 70s.
Well, the flair.
You can bring back a little bit of your flair in your pants.
I have flair jeans, I really do.
Okay, so then you'll wear them and I'll wear my jeans next time.
All right.
Let's turn now to someone who stores the fat in the middle of their body.
These guys have the love handles.
We talked about all these sugar lovers.
So let me show you a picture of Anna.
This is her before.
And Anna, come join us now, if you don't mind.
Let's see how you look.
10 pounds thinner.
That's really good.
Oh, my goodness.
That makes you look amazing.
Anna, would you be confident skipping the dressing room next time and just buying these things based on Denise's recommendations?
Oh, absolutely.
I've never, I had never bought in online and now I feel very comfortable.
Right, so what'd you do?
How'd you make this work so well?
Okay, so the fit for Anna is the skinny jean.
And I know all my curvy girls out there saying, wait, curvy girls in the skinny jean?
You can absolutely wear it.
And the thing here is, the high waist is on here for Anna as well.
So it's a higher waist.
So it's getting that target area of the tummy, which is great.
And it's the way to go when you do that combination of a voluminous top that's going to hit you right there, too.
It's still a little comfort zone for you.
You look very elegant, Anna.
Thank you very much.
Thank you so much.
And finally, let me talk...
About the estrogen type.
These are people who store the fat again around the hips, the butt, and the thighs.
And Anita said she was the classic estrogen type.
And here's why.
This is her beforehand.
And here she is right now.
Come on out.
Doesn't look very estrogen-y to me anymore.
So what'd you do here to make her look 10 pounds thinner?
Okay, the fit here, let's just say Anita is amazing.
You know, when I met her and we were trying one jeans backstage, the story about her is amazing.
And I said, you know what?
I'm going to give you something hip, young, and fun.
What's the story behind what's going on?
She lost a lot of weight.
I lost 206 pounds.
You did?
Oh, my goodness.
Nice.
I want to get it on that accident!
206 pounds?
How'd you do it?
I had weight loss surgery two years ago.
It was a vertical sleeve gastrectomy.
Good for you.
Best thing I ever did.
Good for you.
You look wonderful.
All right, we got 10 pounds off the 206 pounds.
Yes, absolutely.
So I wanted to sex her up a little bit.
So the fit is the girlfriend jean.
We always hear about the boyfriend jean.
The girlfriend is more flattering because she fits your body just a little bit more but still gives you that proper, like, a little bit of room in there.
And then the stretch.
This is the 1%.
It's coming down.
It gives you a little bit of room.
And then it hits right at the crop.
And then, of course, you know, I love my heels, so we added those as well.
The crew needs to thank you, and you look wonderful.
Congratulations.
We'll be right back.
Next, are you addicted to sweets?
Does stress push you to more sugar fixes?
Chocolate is my medication.
Those guilty binges end today.
We have a new way to kick your sugar habit.
A three-step plan to help you break your bond from sugar.
Next.
We answer your biggest food questions starting with artificial food coloring.
Why are so many dyes banned outside the U.S.? There are about half a million that we estimate are affected by food dyes.
All new odds.
That's coming up tomorrow.
There are two types of people.
You either love sweets or you love salty.
If you're the sweet type, listen up, because today I'm evening you the easiest plan we've ever come up with to break your sugar habit, and it's just what Elisa needs.
For as long as I can remember, I've always had a sweet tooth.
My favorites are ice cream, chocolate chip cookies, and milkshakes.
Especially when I hit the afternoon slump, I just need something sweet to just take me through the day.
Ever since I had my son six years ago, I just felt more stressed.
Juggling work, being a mom, running around, I just needed that extra push, you know, and the sweets gave me that.
It just kept me going.
It starts first thing in the morning.
For breakfast, I will have ice cream with some candy in there.
To keep the energy going throughout the day, I carry chocolate in my bag and chocolate chip cookies.
I even sip on packets of honey at work, and I hide it from my coworkers because it's embarrassing.
For an afternoon snack, I have a milkshake.
Even for dinner, I have to have a couple of bowls of ice cream and, you know, some more candy.
Chocolate, it's my medication.
I feel like it calms me down, you know, after a long day.
But my sugar habit is affecting my self-esteem because, I mean, over the last six years, I've gained 60 pounds, you know, and I'm worried about diabetes and maybe obesity.
I actually tried to go a day without sweets and it felt like I was going through withdrawals.
I felt nauseous, drained, depressed.
I feel like I'm addicted to sugar.
I know it's not healthy and I know I shouldn't be doing it, but the cravings is just unstoppable.
I just have to have it.
Lisa's here.
She says the stresses of motherhood push her to a sugar fix.
So take me to the stage of what goes on as you start to get that sugar into your life.
Okay, so as you can see, life is happening.
You know, life for me is very stressful.
It's very hectic.
I mean, from dealing with my son to the things at home, at work, you know, the stress levels are really high.
And I just have to have sugar.
When I start eating, I cannot stop.
So even if I'm not hungry, I just get the unstoppable cravings.
I just get the urge to eat sweets, anything sweet.
You feel bad about that?
Yes, I do, because I know I overdo it.
I overeat, and I just can't stop.
When I'm done, I'm looking at everything in front of me, all the wrappers and everything, the candy wrappers, and it's like, what did you just do?
The evidence.
Yes!
This is crazy!
You know, the interesting thing is, folks when they trip up, in your case, fall prey to the sugar that's everywhere, they feel guilty.
They feel embarrassed.
You use that word yourself.
You think you don't have the willpower.
Right.
It's not about that.
It's about your biology.
And I want you to stop beating yourself up about this.
This is for everybody, by the way.
Your body's job, your body's job, is to keep you addicted to sugar.
Yes, that's true.
Why would your body do that to you?
I'll tell you why.
It's hardwired into you.
It all started when you were a little baby.
You probably don't remember this, but there you are, age one, right?
Having a birthday cake that your family gives you, your parents love you, you're loving it, it's the best time.
And what does your brain do?
It is hardwired to see energy and sugar as the same.
In fact, it sees sugar as the best energy because it gives you so much and it happens at happy times in your life.
Now here's the interesting thing.
Back in the wild, our ancestors would hunt for sweet stuff.
Berries, bananas, right?
Sour stuff and bitter stuff meant poison.
That's why kids don't want cruciferous vegetables, right?
They don't want citrus fruit because it doesn't taste right.
It might be poisonous.
So your brain sends reinforcing messages Jackpot, right?
I got everything I want.
Go back and get more and get more.
And don't stop no matter what.
I don't care what your brain's telling you about guilt and shame and embarrassment.
Forget all that.
You're sort of like Feed Me Seymour, right?
From Little Shop of Horrors, right?
And you are going to reinforce.
Oh, my God.
Don't I look great?
The more you eat, the more you want.
Beautiful.
Just, ugh.
Look at this.
I know.
You want some?
Yes.
Can I? Yeah.
So here's a question for you.
Yes.
Are you willing to work with me?
Yes.
Is everyone who's got the sugar issue willing to work with me to rewire our bodies?
Yes.
Because that's what you have to do.
You've got to deal with those issues that came up so long ago.
Right.
And I'm going to tell you to it in a different way if I can for everybody.
Everyone watch and listen carefully.
If you tried to break a sugar habit, you need to hear this loud and clear.
Unless you rewire here, unless you rewire here, you will always fail here.
Oh my God.
Look at this.
Look at this.
Oh my God.
This is going to waste.
Yeah, it's white gold.
That's right.
It's going to waste.
I'm telling you, I'm going to drop it right now.
Oh no.
I don't want that in your life.
But you got to change it up here.
Yes.
If you rewire here, you're going to deal with that down there.
And after looking at that video, I'm ready to change.
I need to change.
Come on, I got the right person for you.
I've invited psychologist Dr. Ramani Durvasala.
She specializes in our complicated relationships with food, and she's going to give you a plan starting today.
So if you don't mind, explain why your plan today is a little different from the usual brute force we use to get people to stop with things like sugar.
And again, so much of this is about stress.
We can't get rid of the stress, so let's focus on the sugar.
This plan is realistic, okay?
Because if we try to take all the sugar away at once, you're gonna crash.
You're not gonna do it.
So it's realistic, but what you're gonna see is we do this over time.
As we get the sugar off, It's going to become motivating itself because you're going to start feeling better almost right away.
Okay?
So little by little, we're going to get that sugar off.
You're going to feel better.
But I'm not taking all the sweetness away.
I think we do need sweetness.
It's part of the human diet.
But the sweetness we're going to bring in, we're going to trick your taste buds.
We're going to retrain you and give you some crutches so you still get sweet food, but not this overly sugarly candy kind of stuff that is no good for you.
So you ready?
Now, I've asked you to be cautious about one thing.
A lot of programs say just stop the sugar, and then step two is live without the sugar.
That's the same thing.
It's impossible.
So the first thing she wants you to do is get rid of the timed sugar treats.
Do you know what they are?
Not really, though.
This is really important.
Let's talk about this, because if we take it all away, you're going to get headaches.
We don't want that, because that's happened to you in the past, right?
Your thyme sugars are your things like the donuts in the morning, the muffin in the afternoon, the things that you know you eat at certain times a day.
Anything you eat on a routine that's sugary is gone.
So you know you eat donuts at breakfast or ice cream at breakfast?
No more.
You know that you eat that muffin in the afternoon?
No more.
Take the rituals out.
This is about breaking habits, and a great way to break habits is to change the rituals.
That's week one.
I know it's going to be hard, but it's not all the sugar gone, but it's those timed sugars.
That's going to be a lot of the sugar for you, right?
Okay, so that's going to be gone.
But can I point one thing out?
Those aren't the sugars that I think you're saying, I've got to have that to save my life.
Those are the sugars where every morning at 7.30 you go and pick up X and put it in your mouth.
So it doesn't actually deal with the deeper reason you're dealing with sugar and having problems with it, which is fine.
Let's take the low-level food first, the easy stuff first.
It's going to be hard.
So you see, you're doing the easy stuff first.
You still have the stress.
You're still every so often gonna go in, but take that stuff out.
The next step, though, is we're gonna give you some sugar crutches.
There's still gonna be sugar coming in your life.
By taking away those thyme sugars, we're gonna start retraining your taste buds.
Not as much sugar's coming in.
The new sugar we bring in is going to be more subtle, It's going to be healthier.
And now you won't be as disappointed.
It may not be as much of a sugar bang, but it's going to be healthy stuff.
And you'll be used to it now.
And you'll still have it coming.
And then, over time, it's going to be enough.
You'll say this healthy and subtle, fruity sugar is more than enough.
One of these tips is one of my favorite tips of all time.
So when we come back, the crutches that Dr. Romani is going to offer all of you who have problems with sugar.
Be right back.
Coming up next, Dr. Romani shares easy ways to trick your taste buds.
Sweet treat substitutes to put an end to your cravings.
Just like that ice cream for breakfast.
The plan to break your sugar habit for good.
No more sugar!
Next.
Whoever said a doctor's visit isn't fun has obviously never been to the Dr. Oz show.
Is that right?

Today we're breaking it down and giving you specific advice for your body type.
If we're focusing on sugar lovers right now, Dr. Romani is back with a plan to break your sugar habit for good.
It's our easiest plan yet.
So easy that I don't have any excuses left for not doing it.
Remember, step one was to get rid of the timed sugars.
That's the routine you get into, like stopping by to pick up donuts on the way to work or the afternoon cookies.
Get rid of the routine because you don't really want the sugar, you want the routine.
When we get past that, Dr. Rami is going to walk us through a trick to help your taste buds get used to something that's happening in the morning.
So what's so important about the morning, and what's your idea on how to trick our taste buds?
People who are big sugar eaters usually eat sugar right through the evening.
And so then they wake up in a sugar crash, which means what?
You're going to go for the sugar again to get that lift up, especially with all the stress.
So what we've got to do is reboot, but you're used to sugar in the mornings and sweet stuff in the mornings, including ice cream.
So let's think of it.
Especially the ice cream.
Especially ice cream.
This way.
Go ahead and make yourself a vegetable smoothie.
I can see your face.
A little bit of kale.
Look at the excitement.
It's like the chocolate she was describing earlier, isn't it?
This is gonna be hard.
Here's my cell.
This is gonna be hard?
Here's my cell.
It's not just kale.
Kale and all, but it's also fruit.
The fruit's going to add sweetness, but what you're also going to do is blend this up with cold coconut milk.
What that's going to do is it's going to make it creamy, just like that ice cream you've been eating for breakfast.
So you can stick this in a cup, take it in the car if you're running late, so that helps address the stress piece.
You can make one for your son.
And so, but I want you to go ahead and taste that because you're going to see.
I'll taste it if you taste it.
Okay, go.
Okay, good.
It's cold, it's creamy, which one do you want?
They're the same.
This is gonna be hard.
I bet that one's sweeter.
This is a tough sell.
I hope it's sweeter.
I hope it is.
Hers is sweeter than mine?
I hope so.
They're the same.
Here's hoping.
Mmm.
It's got a natural sweet.
Okay.
Yeah, she's in.
She's cured!
Cured!
No more sugar!
I, oh, my goodness.
This is, ah, awful.
All right, that was her best shot.
Look at my best shot.
We're starting off with the hard one.
Forget that.
That was a bad idea.
Dr. Romney, what kind of idea was that?
This is a healthy chocolate popcorn.
Chocolate popcorn.
I like chocolate.
This is cocoa powder.
It's real.
Go ahead and taste this.
This is what to do in the afternoon when you're having little problems.
And, of course, all through the day, you can start to use these kinds of snacks.
And it's real cocoa powder, so it's got some sweet to it, but not an overwhelming amount.
No.
I taste salt.
Popcorn.
Yeah, well, popcorn's a little salty.
Not the same as sugar.
You know what?
This is going to be really, really hard, but after looking at my tape and, you know, what I go through, I'm going to try this.
Good.
I have to.
I have to.
I have to go.
Now, the other thing I should say is there's nothing artificial here.
The artificial sweeteners are just a, you know, unfortunately, a drainage hole that you'll sink into and never get out of.
So those will just trick your taste buds the wrong way.
So that's an easy little crutch, but this is what I've been saving for you.
Oh, mangoes.
Yes, mangoes.
But here's the thing.
Mango is sort of sweet.
And I like them, but for someone who really loves sweets, it doesn't replace the donut and the other stuff.
It doesn't.
We did something special here.
Okay.
This is really cool.
This heightens the natural sweetness of fruit sugars.
Really?
So if you put some salt on top of your mango, taste the normal mango and taste that and compare it.
I have to do this.
A discriminating palate like yours.
Yummy.
Yummy, right?
Now taste it with the salt.
She's going to love this!
We can do a taste bud transplant.
This is.
It's sweeter?
It honestly tastes sweeter, yes.
It does.
This is a little trick for everybody not to say, please do not go pouring salt all over your fruit.
But a tiny bit of salt on fruit makes it taste so much sweeter that it actually gets you to take it.
Oh, she wants more!
Listen, honey, I'd rather you would eat a mango with some salt at 4 o'clock in the afternoon than a candy bar, okay?
That's a go.
That's what we want you to do.
This is one final trick that I want you to keep in mind.
This is a cookie jar, but there's no cookies in there.
This is a whole new kind of cookie jar.
Dr. Romani, how does this work?
This is one of my favorite tricks I've been using with patients for years, okay?
Because a cookie jar means cookies, and that's often your go-to, especially when you get home.
What I want you to do is make a new cookie jar.
I want you to write down activities that are pleasant to you.
It could be reading a book, playing a game with your son, maybe even calling a friend.
And in fact, when you feel the need to go in for sweets, stick your hand in here and pull one out.
What you're doing instead, instead of filling yourself up with Sweetness that is actually not that sweet, not good for you, you're filling yourself up with connection.
You're filling yourself up with self-care.
And that's an entirely new paradigm for you.
And what happens is you get distracted for that minute.
And you almost get excited.
I want sugar.
I get to go to the cookie jar.
And it's a whole new way.
By the time, two weeks of this, honestly, you'll feel like I'm connected to people in my life more.
I feel less empty.
Instead of filling the void with sugar, you're going to be filling it with connection.
Got you.
You wrote mom there?
Yes.
Mom might be the ultimate anti-sugar.
There you go.
Perfect.
We'll tell you it's a pretty good idea.
You know what?
No calories in that.
Costs next to nothing.
And it deals with the real needs you have.
Definitely.
Definitely.
Listen, I'm glad you can try the salt.
I'm going to send you home with the popcorn, and I'll keep those smoothies.
Thank you very much.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
We're just at the Tooth Tube Hub with naturalize.com for expert plans and more.
We'll be right back.
Next, an infection that could cost you your sight.
Are contact lens wearers putting themselves at risk?
A new danger lurking in a lens case that can feed on your eyes.
I didn't realize how powerful a parasite this was.
Coming up...
We answer your biggest food questions starting with artificial food coloring.
Why are so many dyes banned outside the U.S.? There are about half a million that we estimate are affected by food dyes.
All new odds.
That's coming up tomorrow.
If you wear contact lenses, well, pay attention.
You could be making an important mistake that could cost you your eyes.
There's a new danger that's lurking in lens cases and it has a lot of ophthalmologists talking.
The CDC reports that almost all contact lens wearers, and that's about 41 million people, are putting themselves at risk for eye infections, including infections by a parasite that actually feeds on your eyes.
Jim Strickland from WSB-TV Channel 2 has a story.
Atlanta eye surgeon Barry Lee showed me what the bug looks like.
And they're feeding on the cornea.
This is a microscopic image of a victim's eye.
If it's misdiagnosed or if it's gone a long time before diagnosis, you may lose your eyeball.
We got this picture from the CDC. The bug is called an Acanthamoeba.
I didn't realize how powerful a parasite this was.
Ozzie McCallum emailed me with his story as a warning to others.
He'd already had three eye surgeries.
He invited us into the room for his fourth and final operation.
The surgeon had no choice but to remove his eyeball.
Who wants to think that they're going to lose their eye over something as silly as getting a bug in their eye?
We used to see one a year, and now I'm seeing over 200 cases here in Atlanta.
McCallum isn't sure how he got infected, but he's convinced speaking out can save someone else's sight.
If you don't catch it right away, it can do the same thing to you.
Consumer Investigator Jim Strickland joins us now from Atlanta.
Jim, in your report, Dr. Lee mentioned that on average he used to see one case a year, but now Atlanta has about 200 cases.
Are there any cases for people who don't wear contact lenses?
Is that the only problem?
Not from what Dr. Lee has seen.
Well, he can tell you that the CDC says that contact lens wear is the number one risk factor.
And they've investigated several outbreaks of this infestation.
And in virtually every case, bad contact lens hygiene has been a key factor, Dr. Oz.
So what's the most surprising thing you've learned during your investigation?
You've spent a lot of time on this.
Well, as a matter of fact, this happened with Mr. McCallum.
This infection can be misdiagnosed very easily.
Patients can initially present with simply pain and maybe a red eye.
In his case, he was diagnosed as having a virus.
So his first doctor gave him a steroid drop, which in fact actually fed the bug and made matters worse.
So how can folks tell, now that you've scared us all, whether they've got pink eye or some other reason their eyes are swollen, or if they've got one of these parasitic infections that's eating at their eyeball?
Well, it's really hard to tell, especially in the early stages.
That's why if they are a contact lens wearer and they're presenting to their doctor with eye pain or redness, they really ought to ask the doctor to take a culture to make sure that acanthamoeba is not one of the factors causing their problems.
Jim, thank you for the hard work on this.
I appreciate it.
In a national survey, nearly all contact lens wearers reported at least one risky behavior that could lead to eye infections.
For example, things as innocuous as showering with your contacts in, which I think most people do.
So if you're worried about this dangerous parasite, and you should be, or if you just want to keep your eyes super safe, follow these simple tips from the CDC. First off, keep contact lenses away from all normal sources of water, like from your sink or from your shower.
Therefore, don't wash your face with the contacts in and open your eyes, and don't shower in them either.
You've got to also discard use disinfecting solution.
If it's already been used, get rid of it.
It's not supposed to be there.
If it's left in your case, empty the case out and clean it out.
And then, you know how you throw your toothbrush every three months and buy a new one?
You can do the same thing with your lens case.
Throw it away every three months, get a new one.
It's worth the investment in your site.
I'll be right back.
Flatter by Friday.
The plan to shrink your stomach in just one week.
Slim down without sacrifice.
Let's talk about exactly what you're going to need to get black by next Friday.
Plus, fast fixes to get your health back on track.
All new odds.
That's coming up on Friday.
That's coming up on Friday.
Now, more than ever, they have taken big strides toward making everyone feel accepted.
They're introducing a diabetes kit for dolls to help kids care for their diabetic playmate or for themselves.
American Girl was already in the works with this product, but when they heard from 13-year-old Anya, an insulin-dependent type 1 diabetic who started a petition calling for a change, it didn't go unnoticed.
Take a look.
I am asking the American Girl doll company to make diabetic supplies.
They've done a good job in all the other places like bald American Girl dolls, wheelchairs, hearing aids, braces, and even a service dog.
But they just don't have diabetic supplies like a diabetic bag, insulin pump, shots, and a glucose monitor.
Isn't that cool?
I love Anya for doing that.
She's one of 200,000 teens in America diagnosed with diabetes.
And this kit has everything you need, literally.
They've got insulin pump here.
There's a little pricker lance there.
It measures your blood sugar there.
This is the insulin injector, actually.
They've got everything you need.
They even have Band-Aids.
Look at this.
They've got Band-Aids to put on your arm after you get something done.
So I love this a lot, and I especially love the fact that this raises awareness It raises acceptance, and it maybe educates future possible doctors, all of which are fantastic things.
Bottom line, a little change can go a long way.
On behalf of American Girl, I'm going to take this dial to Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of Columbus.
Where I practice, I'm going to give this to a little girl with diabetes.
Thank you for joining us today.
