Straight from the red carpet.
Welcome to Nashville.
Burning health questions from country music's biggest stars.
What's the best thing for a hangover?
I get tension headaches.
How can you help relieve that?
Our Nurse Nation's Miss Colorado has easy remedies that's music to their ears.
Plus, Grammy Award winner Ashanti.
How she's using her voice and music to change something you do every day.
It's always important to have it come from within.
Coming up next.
We'll save lives today.
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh We are great and healthy!
Today, new answers to the health questions I get asked the most.
And you get those questions, we're going somewhere very, very special.
For the first time ever, we're going to take you onto the red carpet at Country's biggest night, the Country Music Awards.
I've got Jewel, I've got Kelly Pickler, and Rascal Flatts, just to name a few, asking their most burning health questions.
And my friends, nothing is off limits.
Then R&B star Shanti is here with the answer to how much water you really need to drink in a day.
What she has to say even surprised me.
And did you know there's a right way and a wrong way in writing your to-do list?
It's simpler than you think, and you're going to take away your stress and anxiety if you do it right.
But first, country superstars are known for their killer voices and fierce performances.
But just like you, they have questions about their health.
So who better descend to the red carpet than country music fan and Nurse Nation leader, Miss Colorado, Kelly Johnson.
Hey Dr. Oz, it's Kelly.
I'm here at the 49th Annual Country Music Awards on the red carpet with your team and this is so much fun.
This is crazy how many country music stars are here right now and they all want to ask you a question.
So my mission is to find out what the country music stars and their fans have to ask Dr. Oz.
Welcome to Nashville.
I literally see Kelly Pickler right now.
I can't believe I'm talking to you guys.
This is really cool.
We're honored to be able to speak with you.
Wow, Dr. Oz Cole Swindell came to talk to us.
Hey you.
Hey you.
How's it going?
Oh my gosh, it's a pleasure to meet you.
You make scrubs look good, so damn you.
Thank you so much.
I'm here with Brett Eldridge and it's fabulous to see him.
I'm here with the Dr. Oz Show.
I know.
Dr. Oz, really?
All right.
Do you have any health questions for Dr. Oz?
Oh, man.
I'm pretty healthy.
I don't want to say that one much.
I drink a ton of soda.
I mean, a lot of it.
Like 15 a day a lot.
I really want to know how bad it actually is.
What's the best thing for jet lag?
And what's the best thing for a hangover after the CMA Awards?
That's better.
Does this look infected?
Hold on.
What can I do to slow my mind down?
How much alcohol is really too much alcohol?
What is a good meal for an artist or anybody who has little time but wants to be healthy?
I was once told if you drink a lot, beans are really good for that digestive system.
Is that true?
Energy drinks.
Are they bad for me?
What would I benefit from cutting out gluten?
Is there anything I can do to make myself taller?
I think she needs to borrow some from me, Dr. Oz.
Maybe that's the problem.
Alkaline water, or non-alkaline water, or however you even say it.
I'm a country boy, so I'm not probably saying that right, but what's the best water to drink?
I do get sore throats a lot.
What's the best way to cure that?
What's the best way to keep my voice in shape and make sure I don't sound terrible?
Dr. Oz, what would your numberman recommendation for a horse throat be?
So, we're going to get to Jules' question in a second, but Ms. Collingwell Kelly Johnson is here, who I adore.
Now, you happen to love country music.
I am a huge country music fan.
Who are you most excited to see?
Everybody out there.
Oh my gosh, probably Kelly Pickler.
I have one of her songs on repeat in my car, and it's a Christmas song, but it's year-round for me.
Was she next to you?
She was so nice to me.
Everybody was nice to me, Dr. Oz.
Thank you for sending me out there.
I enjoyed having you out there.
Here's what we're going to do.
We get to Jules' question.
We get to all of these questions.
She asked, what to do about a horse and sore throat when on the road?
I know a lot of you all have the same question, because we all get sore throats.
By the way, we're going to Country Music Awards or just driving the kids to school.
So come on over here.
We got a sore throat solution that I use personally.
I like it a lot.
It is licorice root.
But you got to gargle with it.
It's a soothing substance.
It helps expel some of that mucus that you have in your throat.
Questions, how does it work?
So, go ahead and give three drops to us.
Okay.
So, it's a liquid.
You got to actually put it in some water.
Give me three drops worth, right?
There you go.
What does it taste like?
Well, it smells like black licorice.
Be brave.
You're a nurse.
What do you think?
It tastes like black licorice.
It's not sweet.
That's for sure.
It's not bad.
Not bad.
I don't think...
It tastes terrible.
What are you talking about?
You're so polite.
It's not sweet.
You're putting it in the water.
I put a couple drops in this little demonstration too.
So this is your throat.
And your throat, of course, when it gets raw and irritated, it gets that redness.
It gets the white mucus in here.
See all the white stuff there?
All that bad stuff?
So you put the fluid in your throat and you basically gargle.
Like that.
And sometimes you'll make foam in your throat.
Not usually.
But when you're done, all that stuff washes away, which is part of the goal here.
You want the mechanical function combined with the licorice at the same time.
It'll release stuff that's in your throat, but also help deal with the discomfort.
So let's say someone doesn't have licorice root hanging around.
You don't have this every year?
I usually do, but if I didn't have it, what would I do?
What do you recommend to your patients?
Right.
So with my patients, I recommend cold water.
Same thing.
You're going to gargle the cold water.
You know, it's kind of crazy because a lot of people think warm water, hot water, that's kind of the big thing.
But there's just the same amount of benefits with cold water.
That's why I love nurses.
Practical insects.
All right.
Let's get to it.
We have a question for every demo.
Next question comes from Brett Eldridge.
Take a look.
I get tension headaches when I'm on stage sometimes where they're so bad right here in the back of my neck where I literally can't Almost get to the show because it hurts so bad and I feel like I'm going to pass out.
How can you help relieve that?
Because I hate that feeling.
It's the worst.
I just want to play my show and have fun.
How often do you get faced with that question?
Headaches?
Chronic headaches.
All the time.
You know, and even not chronic headaches.
Headaches just in general.
They're very, very common.
It seems like they're a symptom to absolutely everything.
So do you ever use ACV, apple cider vinegar?
I have used it before.
And I know we have two different ways that we're going to try it today.
So I'll do the first, you do the second.
We'll team up.
Okay.
All right.
So the way I like to do it, it's got benefits because of potassium and amino acids and all that good stuff, the antioxidants.
So take just a little bit.
This is, I don't know, a quarter of a cup.
Pour it in some warm water.
You want this water to have just come off the stove so it's, you know, steaming a little bit, right?
Because you want the steam.
My dad used to do this when I was a kid.
I never knew what the heck he was doing.
Now I understand.
Maybe because of me.
So you take the towel, you put it over your head like this.
You're like Darth Vader, all right?
And then you put your head over the water.
You take a deep breath in.
You gotta hold the breath in.
That's the whole thing.
You gotta do this for five minutes or so with that breath coming deeply into your lungs.
Then every time you breathe out, really exhale with the belly button, push the air out.
Then when you're done, We can pretend we're done.
Keep your face dry so you don't look foolish.
But again, not everyone walks around with boiling water.
So if you're wearing a stethoscope and you can't put your head into the water, what do you do?
So for easy and convenient, especially for people that have headaches and don't have time to either boil the water or just in general the materials, you can take two teaspoons up to three times a day, just drink it.
We're going to have to do it.
A shot.
They were all asking about alcohol.
If you mix this with alcohol, would it still work?
I don't know.
Would it?
I don't know.
We can try adding something to this.
Okay.
No, I didn't.
I'm kidding.
I gotta put it down like that.
Brett, next time you're on the road, make sure you're stuck up on the apple cider vinegar.
Next question comes from Rascal Flatts.
Take a look.
I have a question for Dr. Oz about stress.
What do you do to relieve stress while you're on the road besides drinking?
You know, drinking and Xanax.
I mean, who doesn't have stress in their lives?
The biggest question of all, the stress solution?
Lemon oil.
This little bottle has got literally dozens of little healing ingredients through chemicals that we're now discovering to tame your stress levels.
Now, a lot of the viewers, Kelly, probably say, why don't you just cut the darn lemon in half and smell the lemon?
Right.
So the big thing about the lemon oil, especially for stress relief, is that the essential oils are concentrated in the rind.
So the extraction, the oil that we have, is a more concentrated version than if you were to just cut it in half because it's actually extracted from the rind where those oils are kept.
So what you'll do, you'll take it, put a couple of drops in your hand, rub it together.
So you want it to get kind of warm.
So you want to create that friction and then you just breathe it in.
I can't even smell it.
I'll let you have your turn.
I'm just kidding.
No, and it smells really good, but here.
So deep breath in and out.
That's good.
You know what?
I want the audience to enjoy this.
It's great.
We'll load you all up after the break.
Listen, Kelly, I want to thank you for being here.
No, thank you for having me.
You look wonderful out there.
Well, thanks so much.
Thanks for dying the scrubs and being part of Nurse Nation.
It was a blast.
Love what you're doing.
We'll be right back.
Come on over here.
Next, more red carpet remedies to beat that hangover.
How much alcohol is really too much alcohol?
What you can do to stop the nausea and calm your stomach.
Burning questions from country music's biggest stars.
Next.
Master your metabolism.
We told you what it is and where it is.
Now we're here to find out how to eat for your metabolism type.
You ready?
Taronda Jones from Empire is back.
See how to maximize your metabolism with meals based on your personality type.
You'll feel good about it because it's going to make you feel like you're comfortable.
Plus, how long does Paula Deen lose 42 pounds?
She reveals the tasty secret to her weight loss.
All new odds.
That's coming up on Monday.
I can't believe how many country music stars there are here right now that are dying to talk to you and ask you questions.
This is pretty cool.
I woke up with a headache this morning.
I have no idea why.
I didn't even drink that much last night.
But that's where you go ding with the special effects.
What's the best thing for a hangover after the CMA Awards?
What do you guys do to stay healthy on the road?
I like to run a lot.
We'll hit a local gym if there's one.
A lot of alcohol.
Alcohol kills everything.
How much alcohol is really too much alcohol?
The perfect cure for taking in too many adult beverages the next day?
I'd like to know that.
If he's got a solution for that, that'd be amazing.
We'll buy it.
Do you have one?
We're back with Bernie Health Questions from Country Music's Biggest Stars.
And boy, they have a lot of questions about the same topic.
It's about hangovers.
Let's say you've got a big night ahead of you, just like those country stars often have, and you want to know how to beat a hangover before it beats you.
So before you have that first sip of alcohol, remember the three Ps.
This is the prepare, the plan, and most importantly, pace yourself.
I could throw a P in there as well, but I'm not going to.
So the best way to prepare is to carb up.
The way a professional athlete prepares themselves for a game.
Here's how they do it.
They actually get themselves psyched up.
Because alcohol destroys essential nutrients.
So you want to fill your stomach with healthy starches and the essential vitamins and minerals.
Here's how you can do that.
You're going to make a perfect pre-drinking meal.
Slipping like grilled chicken, And a side of mashed sweet potatoes.
You want to stay away from those greasy foods.
You know why?
Because grease doesn't mix well with alcohol.
You can end up spending most of the night on the toilet.
You don't want that, do you?
Not much fun.
Next, you gotta forget the fizz.
The carbonated mixers increase the rate of alcohol absorption in the blood.
For example, You got a sip or something here, something with carbonation in it, right?
That carbonation goes into your stomach.
Now watch the pressure.
As you get more of that carbonation in there, the pressure builds, those bubbles push the alcohol out of your stomach faster.
It's something called gastric emptying that pushes the stuff from the stomach into the small intestine.
The alcohol absorbs more quickly because it's in the small intestine.
It's better at absorbing things than the stomach is, so the person gets drunk faster.
That results in a more intense hangover and lots of other mistakes you don't want to make.
Pay attention to the fizzy stuff.
It makes a difference.
And finally, if the alcohol that you got got the best of you and you need a quick hangover fix, which happens every once in a while, then you can sip on a virgin Bloody Mary.
Who wants to learn about making the right kind of Bloody Mary?
What's your name?
Lisa and?
Stacy.
Come on up, Lisa and Stacy.
Do you guys know each other?
Yes.
Oh, are you friends?
We are.
And they know each other and they're friends.
Yes.
Okay, we'll see if you stay that way.
Here, come on up here.
All right, so what we're going to do, we're going to talk a little bit about hangovers first, and then we're going to make something to take care of them.
So when was the last time you had a hangover?
Yeah, about a month ago.
Were you together?
Yes.
Yeah, commiserating together.
Did you both get a hangover together?
You spent the night together, did the hangover stuff, and you suffered.
All right.
So what did you do to cure it?
What did you do to treat yourselves?
I just do the shades, the Excedrin, and...
Shades and Excedrin.
I eat the stuff you said not to eat, the fried food.
The greasy stuff.
Yeah.
And it makes you feel even worse.
Yeah, you sleep all day.
So we're going to go one up on sleep now.
So we're going to make this together.
So here's your Bloody Mary mix.
It starts with tomato juice, obviously.
So pour that in the blender.
Okay.
And then you can team up on this.
Get some hot sauce.
Hot sauce it to your liking, so you know what you guys like, your friends.
We're gonna add a lot to it.
A lot?
Okay, then the Worcestershire sauce over there.
Even though it's not spelled Worcestershire, that's what it is.
Put a little bit of that in there.
Then dump everything else.
I got the celery there.
You can save one for garnish for you.
The shallots, the pepper, a little salt.
Horseradish, of course.
You want to get a little kick to it.
Now, for most of mankind's history, modern history anyway, we figured out that this works because the tomato juice helps with the nausea.
It's very soothing.
It calms your stomach.
At the same time, all this stuff rehydrates you, especially the tomato juice.
Go ahead and put that in there.
Everything else is sort of an excuse.
Now, you know the hair of the dog idea, right?
Put a little vodka in this?
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
Why not do that, huh?
Yeah.
Yes, I agree.
You think it works, guys?
No.
They know better.
Do not do that.
That's not a good idea.
That sort of numbs you to the pain you just had.
You just delay the pain.
Forget the alcohol.
You put this in here.
What are you doing with these things?
Here.
We're going to make all these garnishes.
Well, here.
Break them in half, anyway.
Okay?
Then, you blend the baby up.
Of course, you're hungovers.
You can barely see any of the nobbins.
Do that for a second.
And you're done.
That quick.
And it looks like this.
Without the alcohol.
And when I toast you, I'll put you to work as well.
Take that back to the audience and share it with them.
And enjoy you.
And good luck in your next hangover.
I want to thank all my favorite country music stars.
Hope this helps ward up any future nasty hangovers.
We'll be right back.
Next, Grammy winner Ashanti.
How she's using her voice and music to demonstrate the power of water.
The more that you hydrate your body, the better you'll feel.
And you'll feel like a perfect song.
Plus, simple tricks to get you to drink more water.
coming up.
I love it when talented people use their gifts for something good.
And that's exactly what Grammy Award winner Ashanti is doing.
The singer is using her voice to demonstrate the power of water.
Ashanti, a quadruple threat as a singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress, has been performing since she was just 12 years old.
After her breakout single, Foolish, put her on the map, Ashanti went on to an acting career in Hollywood.
And she's added health advocate to her credits, teaming up with first lady Michelle Obama to release a hip-hop album for her Let's Move campaign.
Now, she's the face of the Drink Up campaign, encouraging kids and adults to drink more water.
Today, Ashanti is here to show you how to stay healthy and hydrated.
Please welcome Ashanti.
- How are you? - How are you? - Good to see you. - You look very, very hydrated.
Well, thank you.
I feel hydrated.
So why do we get involved in this cause?
It's such an amazing cause.
I think it's so important for us to continue to instill in our kids to be healthy, and it's cool to be healthy, and to just, you know, feel good from within.
You know, and good skin and good things on the outside, but it's always important to have it come from within.
So you're doing something a little unusual.
It's admirable, and I'm very proud that you're doing it, but you went one step further because you've got lots of talents you can throw with this problem.
You're going to make a unique type of video.
This is called an unhydrated song, which I had never heard of before today, so please explain.
Basically, when you hear music, you hear the strings, the vocals, the drums, and everything.
What we're trying to show is a metaphor that you have to go from being dehydrated to hydrated.
And when you're not hydrated, you're kind of like brown and down, and it doesn't feel good, it doesn't sound good.
And the more that you hydrate the song, the more of the song you'll hear.
Kind of like with your body.
So the more that you hydrate your body, the better you'll feel.
And you'll feel like a perfect song.
So can I share just a little bit of what the hydrated version looks like?
All right.
You all want that?
Do they want to see it?
Just to be clear on this, so that's the finished version, but to actually see that, what do folks have to do?
We are going to put drink up, hashtag drink up Ashanti, and the more that everyone gets involved and starts to tweet with the hashtag, the more they'll see.
So the video will become more vibrant, the song will become more vibrant, you'll hear more, and as the tweets come along, it gets more hydrated, hydrated, hydrated, until we have a gazillion tweets and we hear the final masterpiece.
I'll tell ya.
Anything that works with your vit water, I'm into, so I love the concept.
How much water do you think you drink a day?
Um, do I have to be really honest?
Honestly?
It helps.
Honestly, I drink about three bottles of water a day.
That's good.
Yeah, that's not too bad, because I work out, I try to go to the gym.
You definitely have to down the gym after that 45 minutes on the treadmill.
Um, I try to, yeah, I try to stay around three.
Let me ask the audience, how many days do you think you guys can go without water before you die?
Mmm.
Oh, there's the smartest audience in television.
They really are.
Three, four, five days.
You're absolutely right.
You're crazy.
We can go for weeks without eating food, but what do we need?
Come on over here.
Let's show everybody why it's so important to stay hydrated.
Now, I couldn't have you around and not do the ultimate demonstration.
She's wearing the color of water blue.
I'm hydrated.
She's hydrated.
So come and stand over here.
I built you a model of your body.
Oh my gosh, this is me?
This is you.
Oh, I gotta drink some water.
You like the resemblance?
I love it.
Here's your mouth.
Okay.
There's your body.
And of course, this is where you go to the bathroom afterwards.
Okay.
Which is how most of us actually try to figure out how much water we're supposed to drink.
You've got organs in here and tissues and cells.
These only work.
They really only work if you have enough water.
So go ahead and drink some water up.
This is my water?
That's your water.
And as you drink water, pour it in there.
As you drink water, everything starts to move, right?
Your organs start to run around, your tissues begin to go fast speed.
And of course, a little bit comes out the bottom, but look at your cells racing, your tissues racing, everyone's really happy here, right?
That's what you want.
Everything moving as fast as it can.
But if...
If, instead of that normal amount of water, you're gently doling it in.
Go ahead, put that in there slowly.
Okay.
That very delicate water intake isn't enough.
You have to always match the intake to the outtake.
So, between breathing and sweating, if you're working out for that 45 minutes on the treadmill, it should be an hour, by the way.
You don't match.
You get dehydrated, right?
And notice the organs aren't happy.
The tissues barely put in the lungs.
Cells aren't doing much at all.
And other things begin to happen over time.
You start to get dizzy.
You start to get lightheaded.
And you start to lose your tears even.
You can't even cry anymore.
And then you can put that down because we're done.
Because there's not enough going on here.
So what ends up at the end is you get severe dehydration.
When there's not enough fluid to get your body to roll.
And then it leads to shock.
Right.
Like that, shockingly.
You don't want that.
You don't want that.
At all.
So the question is, how do you know how much water to drink?
Here's the clue.
Are you all ready?
We all heard the eight glasses rule, right?
You were giving me the amount that you drink in terms of the amount of bottles of water.
Right.
From now on, I want this to be the gold standard.
Your urine needs to be clear enough to read through.
Oh.
So look.
Can you see my face?
Mm-hmm.
How do I look?
So if you can see through it, look in the mirror if you want, read something through it, doesn't frankly matter.
But if you can read through your urine, it should be a very light color, almost clear, a tiny bit of straw color, then you're okay.
If it's darker than that and you can't read through it, that means you're getting dehydrated.
Absolutely.
I think mine is a little lighter than that.
I actually have a sample from this morning on you.
Yeah, we collect all the urine.
I knew that's what happened when I went.
It was a weird one, that clicking sound.
All right, so come on over here.
So let's show everybody how we actually can get enough water, because you don't just have to drink water.
This is one of the big issues.
The amount of water you drink is, you know, we came up with these ideas from the Second World War.
They were very straightforward concepts, but it turns out that most of food is actually water.
So walk us through the tips.
Tip number one, eat spicy foods.
Do you like spicy foods?
I do.
I love spicy foods.
You look very spicy.
I'm kind of spicy.
I like jerk sauce.
I like jalapenos.
I like peppers.
Like, I'm spicy.
So, the major benefit of spicy foods is you'll go grabbing water pretty quickly.
Absolutely.
You are, right?
It also, by the way, simulates your metabolism.
You got that going for you if you're trying to lose a little bit of weight.
Okay.
Next thing we got to do is actually make fresh fruit ice cubes.
Mmm.
Have you ever tried this?
I love that.
Yeah.
So put it in the freezer.
Once you get it to the, you know, cut the blocks up first.
Use these to hydrate your water or just eat them like little pops.
And they're fantastic and you get tons of water from them.
But the best way of all is just frankly to eat your water.
Watermelons, strawberries, cucumbers.
You can put them on your eyes afterwards.
Celery.
These are all mostly water.
What's your favorite produce?
Um, I like a nice cucumber salad.
I put mangoes, cucumbers, onions, and a tiny bit of cayenne pepper.
So it looks like it's kind of all of this stuff.
It's a hydrated salad.
It's a hydrated salad.
I like that.
So here's what we're going to do.
I'm very proud of you for what you're doing.
I know how busy you are.
Thank you.
And it means a lot to me that you're chipping in.
Thank you.
So here's what we're going to do.
We're going to support Ashanti.
Support the video.
Yes.
You know, make sure you hydrate it.
And you're going to end the Drink Up campaign.
And we're going to circulate a little reminder.
I'm going to put it here on the screen.
Can you read through your urine?
Can you read that with me?
Can you read through your urine?
Send this to all your friends.
We'll put it on our Facebook page.
Make sure everyone knows exactly how to tell if they are hydrated.
We'll be right back.
Next, unwanted facial hair is pretty common among women, but it can do a number on anyone's I've tried everything.
You name it, I've tried it.
Find out which latest home gadgets fixed the problem.
It's had great effect.
And which ones fail.
Coming up.
Maximize your metabolism forever.
Find out how to eat for your metabolism type.
See which one you are.
Plus, how long does Paula Deen lose 42 pounds?
Her secrets to weight loss.
All new Oz.
That's coming up on Monday.
Monday.
So all month long we are bringing you the very best next level fixes for your biggest body And today we are fixing unwanted facial hair.
And here to help me out is licensed therapist and core team expert Tia Brown.
So everyone I know, maybe it's just my ethnic background, all the women are always complaining about facial hair.
How common is it?
It's extremely common.
So many women have problems with it, and there are different places that are key.
Usually the sideburns, chin, mustache, and the neck area.
All of them are dreaded.
So there are many at-home gadgets out there.
How do we know which ones to use?
So we asked Patrice to join us.
How are you, Patrice?
I'm fine, thank you.
How are you?
Thank you for coming, by the way.
I know it's difficult for a lot of women to talk about this publicly.
So I'd love to hear your saga, your ups and downs.
What have you tried for facial hair?
What's been the result so far?
I've done everything.
I've tweezed, I've shaved, I've used Nair, I've used other removal products, I've waxed.
You name it, I've done it.
So, it's frustrating.
I think, you know, this segment is about fixing or fails, right?
We're going to be honest about what works and what doesn't.
Okay.
All we're trying to do is give people a little bit of advice based on what our experience has been.
So come on over here.
Okay.
Come sit over here in our little makeshift office.
Okay.
The fix for unwanted hair is home-threaded.
Have you ever done threading?
Yes, I have.
Now, we all love threading because it's a great experience, but it can also be costly.
You have to pay $12 to $15 every time you get it done.
You have to go to a salon plus the tip, right?
And then you're also in an open room a lot of times, so there's no privacy.
So this new device allows you to thread at home.
It's called the Spring Hair Facial Remover, and it's only $1.99.
Wow.
So, $1.99.
So you can thread your hair for yourself for $1.99, and it's very simple.
So now I have a question for you.
Sure.
Can I use it on my eyebrows?
Now, you don't want to use it on your eyebrows.
It's about the other areas, like the chin over here.
But these are great areas to thread, you know?
So I think it's still a great fix, and it's super simple.
How do you use it?
So right here it has a little spring and then you simply twist it and you put it on your problem area.
So what area would you like me to try?
I'll do a little demo.
Can we try the mustache?
We can.
So what I want you to do is stick your tongue right here, kind of poke it out.
And now we know tweezing hurts, threading hurts a little bit, so you're going to feel a little bit of a twin.
But it takes all the hair out.
Oh, you just twist with your hands?
Yes, you twist it with your hand.
It catches the hair inside?
Yes, it does.
Can you feel it?
Mm-hmm.
So, and if you can look at it, you can see all these little hairs coming up.
Oh, yeah!
Yes!
I want to do it here.
We know that threading is painful.
Ow!
Ow, that hurts!
No pain, no gain.
Women have to do this all the time.
Here, here, here, here.
Oh, I grow a mustache.
Forget about it.
That hurts.
But it looks great.
You won't have the, you know, the marks, because that's the biggest thing.
When you're constantly plucking and you're not looking, you get the mark.
Give us that.
That's yours.
Take it home.
I don't want that.
I don't want that.
Yeah.
Yeah, great fix.
Thank you very much, Paige.
I'm putting this fix today on my Facebook page.
Be sure to share it with your followers using hashtag 30days30ideas.
Up next, the five easy steps to get things done without stress and anxiety.
We'll be right back with that.
Next, overwhelmed by too many priorities?
Can't find balance in your life?
I know you got many balls in the air and you're trying to figure out which ones take priority.
Learn how you can be more productive and organized.
Five easy steps to get things done without stress and anxiety.
Coming up.
This year, it's all about balance.
And more importantly, how you can find balance in your life.
I know you've got many balls in the air and you're trying to figure out which ones take priority.
It can be overwhelming.
I get it.
So today, we're focusing on how you can be productive without stress and anxiety.
Now there's a new phenomenon sweeping the country.
It is so big, it's referred to by just three initials.
GTD. I want to bring it to all of you today.
So first off, how many of you know what GTD stands for?
A lot of folks.
So a lot more folks that I thought knew about, which is fantastic, means it's really caught on.
Here's the question.
What is GT? What does it really mean?
It's a shortcut for getting organized.
And the system and the man behind it, David Allen.
Time Magazine has called David Allen's best-selling book, Getting Things Done, The Art of Stress-Free Productivity, the defining self-help business book of the decade.
And no less than Howard Stern is also a fan.
Allen says the secret to getting organized is actually quite simple.
Declutter your mind and you declutter your life.
Allen's books have inspired everyone from business moguls and creative types to working women and stay-at-home moms, showing them all how to take control of their lives and accomplish their goals.
Having a cluttered closet made me feel like I had a cluttered mind.
When David Allen said in his book that once you get things done, it frees up your mind to be more creative, that was the driving force for me to clean out my closet.
Before I read David Allen's book, my life was out of control.
I run my own business and my home office is the center of everything.
When I followed his tips, it really helped me declutter my office and my life.
Today, David Allen is here to share his very freeing steps to getting things done.
Please welcome David Allen.
He also knows we're all busy.
We're constantly multitasking.
Why is it, despite all that effort, that we cannot get things done?
GTD. Well, come on.
Everybody gets things done.
The sense of not getting things done is because there are a lot of things people have their attention on that are meaningful to them that they actually haven't captured, clarified, organized in an appropriate way.
So it feels like there's tons of stuff still open out there.
And then it just nags at you.
See, Doctor, getting things done, here's a secret, and it's only because you're so cool and this show is great.
Thank you.
I'm going to share this secret.
I love secrets.
Right.
You ready for the secret?
Thank you.
Here's the secret.
Getting things done is not about getting things done.
It's about being appropriately engaged with your life so you can be totally present with whatever you're doing.
Because that's the most productive, healthy state you can operate from.
But people are not appropriately engaged.
That's an absolutely, absolutely deep insight.
So if anybody has ever sat and made a list at some point because they were overwhelmed and confused, they felt better and more in control and more focused, and virtually everybody's done that.
But if you reverse engineered, how come that happened?
You'd never keep anything in your head the rest of your life.
And I don't.
Come on over here.
David's got five steps to help us get to that blissful moment so that we actually can focus on what's happening right now in front of us.
And that's how I think we'll get rid of the stress and anxiety that holds so many of us back.
So, step number one is to capture.
And that's a little bit about what we did.
So, what does capturing mean?
Well, capture means to identify whatever's got your attention.
Little, big, personal, professional, and somehow objectified in some sort of trusted place.
So write it down.
For most people, by the way, that would take anywhere between one and four hours just to get it all.
So usually it looks like most people's to-do lists, which are appropriate.
Hey, I've got mom's birthdays coming up.
That's on my mind.
Or bank.
I need to do something about my checking account.
Doctor.
I need to do something about my health, the ad campaign, and so forth.
So this is the first step, which is grabbing those things.
How many items do you have on your capture list?
Well, I only have a very few things on my capture list because I don't keep the capture list going.
I get rid of that.
And this gets, I guess, we move on to clarify, right?
Is that true?
That's right.
So now we see, okay, I'm going to give mom a birthday party.
Now you have a project that'd be on my project list that I look at regularly to make sure, okay, how am I doing about the birthday party?
How's that going along?
And what's the very next thing I need to do on that to move the needle?
I need to call my sister and ask her ideas about mom's party.
Now, as long as I trust I will look at that appropriately, the next two steps, my brain goes, ah, finished.
I haven't finished the party, but I finished my thinking, and it lets it go.
Yes.
That's how you get it off your mind.
Not by necessarily finishing it, but deciding what it means to me specifically.
That's the clarify step.
It's the washing machine for the brain.
Exactly.
Alright, next big step has to do with organizing, which a lot of us spend time around, but get us into what that really means to you.
How does it free us?
Well, being organized simply says, look, where I stuck it matches what it means to me.
And so it basically just means park stuff in appropriate places.
Your calendar, a project list, a next action list to do things as soon as you can in and around your calendar, and a list of everything you're waiting for to come back from somebody else.
Just four key categories.
So you're not prioritizing here?
Not yet.
Not yet.
Okay, next step.
Next step.
Fourth step is to reflect.
So what are we reflecting on and why is this so important?
Well, if you don't look at your calendar, it's not worth having it.
So you need to step back and look at the inventory that you've defined already.
Take a look at the bigger game so that you feel confident about either doing nothing on your list, taking a nap, having a beer, or doing something on the list or whatever.
It's not about that I necessarily have to do everything on the list.
I just need to make sure I'm comfortable with what I'm not doing.
And the last thing in your five-step plan is to engage, to actually do it.
Yeah, well, that's where you...
When I say engage, I just mean you might decide to take a nap, and that's actually engaging in that, even though that's not on your list.
It just means, where do I put my attention?
Where do I put my focus right now?
The key is to feel comfortable with that.
But you can only feel good about what you're not doing when you know what you're not doing.
So the whole idea is to go through this process so that some part of you can look at all that and say, no, nap is better.
That allows you to take a nice nap.
I must say, it's the opposite of how I've always thought about to-do lists.
To me, they were chores.
I think if I get this right, saying, if this frees your brain from having to worry about that stuff if you do it right, the internal battle goes away.
So you can actually truly, to your secret earlier, which I appreciate you sharing with our audience, engage fully without the stress and anxiety that holds us back.
Exactly.
All right, so I did a little experiment here.
I decided to put David's system into an everyday situation, which many of us face.
Here's how he would approach coming home to prepare dinner.
Your kitchen is a mess.
Let's get it under control for productive action.
Step one, capture.
Identify all the stuff that doesn't belong where it is, the way it is.
Step two, clarify.
Determine what to keep and what to throw away.
Step three, organize.
Put things where they need to go, back in the fridge, in the garbage, or in the sink.
Step four, reflect.
Check your recipe book, ingredients, and utensils.
Step five, engage.
Put butter in the pan and start cooking.
So simple when you finally understand it.
How easy is it for everybody at home right now watching us to master this plan?
Well, it takes about two minutes to understand the model, about two days if you really were going to implement this, and about two years for it to become habitual so you don't have to think about it.
You're just doing it automatically.
All right.
So just wait two minutes for us.
When we come back, the five things organizers cannot live without.
David's going to take us to it.
Don't go away.

That's coming up on Monday.
We are back with David Allen, Organization.
Why is it so important?
It's intimidating to a lot of people.
Well, we just saw that thing about kitchens.
Ask any great chef what mise en place means.
That means before they start that evening, everything has to be in its place.
You're most productive when you have the room to make a creative mess, but if you're already in a mess, you can't make one.
So I clean up regularly because I'm waiting for the next mess to show up, which is my coolest time.
So the whole idea is just get organized enough to give you the freedom to be where you want to be.
Creative disorganization.
That's it.
All right, Dave says there are five things, just five things that every organized person cannot live without.
And they're simple.
Is that true?
There are just five things?
That's pretty much all I have.
First of all, you need a place to capture all the stuff before you can decide about it.
So, physical in-basket, you need one at home, and you need one at work if those are different places.
People say, I want an in-basket in my house.
I go, you don't have an in-basket in your house.
Your house is your in-basket.
It's not a matter of whether you have one.
It's a matter of size.
Most of you, the in-baskets are your first flat surface inside your doors.
That's exactly right.
And you need to have separate ones for each person.
My flashlights, when they go dead, they go in here.
Oh, to refill them.
Yeah, because if you leave them in the drawer, you only are reminded in the blackout.
That's right.
Your brain doesn't have one.
If it did, it only reminds you of stuff when you can do stuff about it.
So I need a place holding place.
That's critical.
That's my most important tool.
I use that more than anybody.
My own.
I dump stuff, all kinds of stuff in there.
And then a portable version of that, the same thing.
When you're out moving around, most of your good ideas about work won't happen at work.
Most of your good ideas to do with your kids won't be with your kids.
So, believe me, that is probably my most critical tool.
Oh, there it is!
There it is!
The David Allen.
You should sell these things.
We do.
Oh, you do?
You do?
I love it!
Well, nobody made it.
Actually, Mont Blanc and other people knocked it off once we made it, but we've had it for years because nobody made it quite the right size.
Right?
Just the right size for the plastic, you know, a cool little pen and, you know, a great little pad.
That's where it goes.
And then, Then, this doesn't stay here.
Let me see if this fits in my pocket.
Oh, it does!
It fits in my pocket!
It was designed for jeans and tuxedos.
That's mine now.
You won't forget.
Excuse me.
That was fun.
Okay.
So then, when you have this, and this is a traveling one, this is just an end, it's literally something I use just as an end basket while I move around.
Then you need to get these things empty.
The way you get them empty is to put yourself through the clarify and organize process.
So, if you can finish something in two minutes, you don't need to organize it.
That's a two-minute rule.
So, if it takes longer than two minutes, you need to keep track of it somewhere, and so some sort of a list manager.
And then finally, this is a retro, but you actually have a filing cabinet.
I do.
Yeah.
And what makes it this far in the process?
Well, once you decide, I don't have an action on it, I just need to be able to retrieve it if I need it, then I need to stick it in a folder that I can retrieve.
I make a very simple one, just A to Z. Passport's under P. But I just need it easily where I can find it and know where stuff is.
I love this advice.
Thank you very much for helping our audience.

That's coming up on Monday.
Tomorrow you'll be talking about my quick guide for freezing produce.
How many of you have tossed away leftovers?
Because you don't know what to do with them.
I think everybody's got that gift.
As a country, you probably throw away 40% of all the produce.
It gets tricky when you're trying to find the best way to preserve it, and freezing is one of the best ways.
That's hard, too, for some people until today.
We have created a quick guide.
It has the easy steps for how to prepare produce before freezing them.
I'll give you a couple examples.
Take apples, for example.
You wash them, you peel them, you core them, you slice them, but you're not done.
You gotta add a little citrus in there, some lemon, you know, something, lime, cut in half, squeeze it in there, and then store it together, pack it and freeze.
The citrus will actually help the browning process from not happening.
That way you get fresh looking apples when you thaw the thing out a few months from now.
And how about peaches down here?
A little different.
Some things you actually have to do a little differently because they won't be preserved otherwise.
You make slits on top of the fruit, little slits.
Then you blanch it for just two minutes.
You throw it in the hot water, boiling water for two minutes.
You pull it right out.
You place it in freezing water for 30 seconds and you're done.
Peel it, cut it in half and freeze it for as long as you want to.
The blanching stops the action of enzymes that naturally occur in all these fruits and veggies that would naturally have them ripen even if they're frozen.
So, here's what it looks like.
This is the official version.
The ones on top, you don't have to do much with except throw them in the freezer.
The ones on the bottom, you got a blancher or something else fishy and funky has to be done to them to make it work for you.
You can head to my Facebook page to get the full quick guide for freezing produce, any kind of produce.
Pass it along, post it on your fridge, and make sure you enjoy the meals when you thaw them out months later.
