Today on Oz, she says she didn't know she was pregnant.
I got sick one time and I thought I had bad barbecue.
Until she went into labor.
You wake up from a coma and they tell you you've had a baby.
How do they deliver that message?
Plus, bye-bye back fat.
The weight hangs from under.
It's not pretty.
Three fast moves to banish annoying bra bulge, also known as back fat.
I got your attention now, didn't I, everybody?
Coming up next on Dr. Oz...
Thank you very much.
All right, you're comfortable.
Today, just imagine this.
Imagine not knowing you're pregnant until you go into labor.
Now, if it sounds unlikely, and it probably does to many of you, or it's like something that could never, ever happen to you, well, think again.
It's called a cryptic pregnancy, and it happens much more often than you might think.
This is Amanda's story.
Billy and I were high school sweethearts.
We were meant for each other.
And like most married couples, Amanda and Billy had big dreams of starting a family.
But they struggled four years to conceive.
After years of trying, we had come to the conclusion that it was not going to happen.
I felt sad, jealous, because everyone around me was having kids and I just couldn't have one.
Believing she would never have a baby, Amanda dismissed any signs of pregnancy.
I was working 8 to 10 hours a day.
I did notice that I was gaining some weight, but I thought it was just because of the stress.
My hands and my feet were swelling, but I blamed it on it being warmer.
I did stop getting my period, but I was always having a regular cycle and I did blame it on stress.
The night before everything exploded, we had Sunday dinner here.
I got up early, went out.
When I come home, I noticed my wife's vehicle was sitting in the drive.
She was supposed to have been at work.
I walked in and she was in the bed, but she didn't know who she was.
She didn't know who I was.
Billy rushed Amanda to the local hospital.
She had had a seizure and they carried her back for a CAT scan and she had another seizure.
But nothing could prepare him for what he was about to hear.
A nurse said Amanda was pregnant.
She was going to have the baby that day.
Neither one of us had any idea that she was pregnant.
Her blood pressure at 223 over 197 and having seizures from eclampsia, Amanda was placed in a medically induced coma and airlifted to a Nashville hospital.
I asked God to please help my wife.
She had an emergency C-section.
The baby was delivered, but Amanda remained in a coma.
Nothing could have prepared me for seeing my baby for the first time.
With those tubes, she was still the most beautiful baby I've ever seen.
Three days later, Amanda awoke.
It's a miracle in itself that I got pregnant, and even more a miracle that I'm here to see it.
Unbelievable.
Unbelievable.
Amanda and Billy are here.
Well first, how are you doing?
How's the baby doing?
We are wonderful.
We're in perfect health.
It's just incredible.
So if I don't mind, you wake up from a coma, from a coma, and they tell you you've had a baby.
How do they deliver that message and what did that feel like?
When I woke up, I was still kind of fuzzy from all the medicine and my husband came in and he said, baby, we need to talk.
Good line, Billy.
He said, you've been airlifted.
We've got a baby in the nursery and she's beautiful.
And he said, I just kind of stared at him with a blank stare because we had been trying for four years and I just didn't think that it was medically possible.
He kept looking at me saying, do you understand what I'm saying?
Do you understand what I'm saying?
He said, the nurses took pictures.
Do you want to see?
And I knew right then when I saw the pictures that she was mine.
Oh my goodness.
Oh my goodness.
And Billy, what was it like for you to learn that your wife was in labor?
I mean, again, who delivered that message to you and how'd you respond?
There was a friend that we had at the local hospital.
She'd come up to us and said that my wife was pregnant.
And when she said that, I asked how far along.
And she'd come back.
She said that she was going to have the baby that day.
And, you know, it was after the baby was born.
The health my wife was in after everything happened the way it did, I was truly blessed to know that my wife and my baby was doing great.
So I've got to ask you a question that I've been thinking about since the first moment I heard your story, which of course is all over the place because people can't believe this happens.
I wrote down some of these typical symptoms that we've had four babies in our family.
My wife complained about these.
They do come up.
The first one is weight gain.
Did you have any weight gain?
I might have gained a couple of pounds, but I'm still wearing the clothes that I could wear to the hospital.
That's unbelievable.
Swollen feet.
I thought that I was standing on the concrete too much.
I work in a warehouse and I thought I was standing on the concrete too much.
Did you miss your periods?
You must have.
I was always irregular and I could go two to three months without having one and I just didn't think anything about it.
I was under a lot of stress.
Did you have nausea or vomiting or intestinal issues at all?
I got sick one time and I thought I had bad barbecue.
I see the book cover.
I thought I had bad barbecue.
It was a baby.
Now, you know, we laugh about it now, just because you're so blessed to have had a positive outcome, but you were in preeclampsia, which is when you have really, really high blood pressure, and then that evolves to a more severe condition called eclampsia, right?
It stops being pre, it becomes a real disease, which is when you're having seizures.
That's when Billy found you.
That's a health catastrophe.
Yes.
Did you have any sense this was happening?
What was your health like before the pregnancy?
We were active.
We rode motorcycles and did boating and I was pretty much in perfect health.
No, no problems at all.
And you weren't aware when you had the seizure that day?
No, no.
Came out of nowhere.
I remember Sunday night and she was born on Monday.
So Dr. Natagal is joining us.
Margaret, come on up if you don't mind.
She's not taking care of Amanda.
Come on over.
But she knows a lot about this.
It turns out, as we're speaking to folks in the OBGYN community, this is not a rare phenomenon.
It's called a cryptic pregnancy.
It's a secret pregnancy.
So how common are pregnancies like these?
It's surprising that it's not as uncommon as you would think.
About one in 450 people will not know they're pregnant until they're about five months pregnant.
And about one in 2500 to 3000 don't ever know that they're pregnant until they go into labor.
And does Amanda fit the profile of a woman who might get pregnant and not know they're pregnant?
You know, there's no real profile.
It could happen to any woman, really.
And it's not surprising in your case because you had decided that you could never be pregnant.
And so women, it didn't dawn on her that she could be pregnant, so it's very easy to say that symptoms of nausea or missing your period could be attributed to other factors.
Let's go through these if you don't mind.
The weight gain, again, most women gain enough weight that they'd be able to know it.
They'd certainly have to change their dress size.
Not at all.
Not at all.
Well, you know, weight gain is variable during pregnancy.
There is a big range.
And sometimes people that are heavier to begin with may gain less and may not realize that they're gaining weight.
Or as you said, you attributed it to different things that you were eating and explained it away.
Did you ever feel the baby kick?
No, I didn't, but my husband recalled one night that he was laying in bed and wrapped his arm around me, and he thought that he felt something, but he thought I had gas.
Gas.
Gas.
We got barbecue and gas going on.
I can't wait till I meet the baby.
That seems like an obvious thing that most of them would experience.
How can women not sense that baby's kicking?
Again, it's variable.
Some people feel the baby moving all the time and some people not as much, especially because it wasn't on her mind as movement.
She may have had some kicking and thought it was indigestion, thought that she was having some cramps, some uterine cramps.
She could explain that kicking away as something else.
Also, it depends on where the placenta is.
So if the placenta is right in front of the uterus, that might be a time where you would feel the baby kick less than if the placenta were behind the baby.
Can I show you what Dr. Natagel is talking about?
Sure.
This might be interesting for all of you.
I never knew this was possible.
I just learned this.
So, Dr. Natagel is referring to something called an anterior placenta.
Now think about this.
And before you run the animation, this is your backbone here, spine.
There's the belly button here that gets pushed out when you're pregnant.
Where does that placenta sit?
When the baby is first conceived, that little egg can insert anywhere, right?
It could be the top of the placenta, in the back, it could be in the front.
So let's play this.
Let's say it goes to the top of the uterus, which is a pretty typical place for it to go.
As the baby is growing, it'll slowly grow the placenta larger and larger, and ultimately when the baby gets big enough, If it kicks, you'll feel it right through your belly button, as so many of you moms have, because there's nothing protecting you.
The placenta's out of the way.
But what happens is the placenta's right in front, right behind the belly button.
Again, that placenta gets larger and larger, and as the baby gets bigger, it begins to kick, but you've got a little cushion here, like a little mattress there.
So you won't feel the kicks.
This might explain why some women sense a lot of kicking when they're making a baby, and others don't.
It could even explain why men didn't feel anything.
Maybe a little gas-like symptom, as Billy might mention, but nothing else.
This is a remarkable insight for me because it shows us how different pregnancy can present and how we can have one in 450 people not know that they're pregnant.
So Amanda, most women have eight months.
Roughly, to figure out they're about to have a baby.
They can buy furniture for the baby's room.
They can paint it over.
They even know the sex it is.
You didn't have any of that.
I didn't have any of that.
I have no ultrasound pictures.
I have no doctor's appointments that I had to go to.
With the help of the community that we live in, we had a living room full of stuff for the baby.
Good for them.
It's hard to cope emotionally, though.
It's one big surprise.
Yes.
Are you ever embarrassed when you have to tell people that you didn't know you were pregnant until the baby came out?
It's kind of hard to explain because people think, well, how did you not know?
Well, I'm living proof that there is people out there that do not know.
Well, I'm very happy that I got a chance to meet you on this.
Now, Eliana is an unexpected miracle.
Yes.
I would love to be able to see the miracle baby if it's okay.
That's fine.
Is it okay?
That's fine.
All right, Eliana, you can bring her out.
I think they're going to try to wrestle her down.
They got some crayons.
Oh, here she's coming out from back here.
Let me go out and get her.
Let me go and get Eliana.
Oh, oh.
Can you wave to everybody?
Oh, I'm going to wave to everybody.
She loves her shoes.
Look at these.
I love the boots.
They're beautiful.
Are you a little miracle?
All babies are miracles.
So if I bring her over here.
Amanda and Bill, you mind if I hold a miracle for a second?
I got a granddaughter and I'm practicing.
Why do you think this happened to you?
What's the deeper meaning?
I lost my mom in August of 2011, and I feel like God took an angel to bring one.
Oh, that's beautiful.
Well, you got an angel now.
Yes, sir.
Beautiful thing.
We'll be right back.
Coming up, funny lady Wanda Sykes.
Lying your back.
Y'all have neutered in here?
I'm deaf.
While she's proof that laughter can be the best medicine.
You don't mind.
There's some 50 shades of Dr. Oz going on in here.
What should we do with Dr. Oz?
Next.
Can your past life hold the key to healing you in this life?
How do you know it's not just some trick of the mind?
Can a new experiment give you a glimpse of former lives?
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
If laughter is the best medicine to get ready for a double dose from one of the funniest people I know, Wanda Sykes is here.
Nothing is off limits.
Her health, her kids, her hot flashes.
She finds the funny in all of it.
Please welcome my friend, Wanda Sykes.
It's a work after.
That's a workout!
It's a workout to get here.
Hey!
You should have like a little Gatorade table or something halfway here.
Good Lord.
Well, thank you for coming.
Thank you for having me.
Let's start with these hot flashes I've been hearing about.
You turned 50. Right.
How bad are they?
They're pretty bad.
It's like, you know, like the night sweats.
And I put it this way.
If I ever murdered somebody...
All I need is a jury of my peers.
A bunch of women also going through hot flashes, and they would get it.
I would walk.
They would let me go.
They'd understand.
They're like, oh yeah, I understand.
It's embarrassing.
You're just sitting there, all of a sudden, you feel it coming on, and you're just sitting there, just a mess.
Just a mess.
Well, sometimes you do things that contribute to this problem.
I understand you have a love affair with wine.
Oh, I love wine.
Yes.
It helps you unwind a little bit?
Yes.
Yes.
Wine keeps me sane.
But the hot flashes make you insane.
Right.
They bounce each other out a little bit because wine causes hot flashes.
Well...
Yes, I'm just going to be a hot, sweaty mess then, huh?
I'll deal with the hot flashes.
Trust me, I'll be better sweaty and a little tipsy.
People, I get along better.
So Fonda's got these beautiful five-year-old twins, Lucas and Olivia.
What's the best part about motherhood for you?
The best is the most rewarding thing I think I've ever done.
And it's the unconditional love that, you know, but it's, I guess that's the best part.
What's the worst part about motherhood?
The worst part is they're in your face every minute.
They just suck the life out of you.
It's like all your hopes and dreams, just toss them in the trash can.
You just put your life on hold and that's it.
I used to know a lot of stuff, Dr. Oz.
I used to read the paper and watch news.
Now it's nothing.
Just empty appears.
Just all kids.
And you're all constantly solving problems and everything.
And I just picture like, okay, this is what I'm going through as a parent.
So imagine if you're doing this and you were like the president.
Can you imagine that?
You know, like the president running in and saying, hey, Mr. President, Madam President, Putin just invaded Crimea and he's taking part of the Ukraine.
As my mother, I would just go, well, you tell them that I'll take it and now neither one of them can have it.
Yeah!
Let me move on to something, because you're so open about your health.
Yes.
2011, diagnosed with breast cancer.
Right.
You all probably have heard this story, but part you don't know about is the difficult decisions you had to make, including the decision to remove both your breasts.
Right.
To me, it wasn't a difficult decision.
I have a very strong history of breast cancer on my mother's side.
Like, she's lost, you know, like, two sisters, and we have, like, first cousins, like, you know.
And also prostate cancer, you know, for the men.
So it's a strong history there.
And actually, I was very fortunate how I found out I had cancer because I went in for a breast reduction because I had real big girls.
I mean, they were big.
I mean, you know, my back was sore and I was constantly knocking over stuff.
You know, you're going to reach up for something and just clear out the whole shelf.
It was just awful.
I mean, they were big.
I would take my bra off, and people thought Law& Order was coming on.
You know what I'm saying?
No, I just took my bra off.
So I had the reduction.
It was through the pathology that they found, you know, early stage of breast cancer.
So I just said, you know what, I'm going to, what is my best odds to not have it?
So I opted to have the double mastectomy.
You ever look back with regret thinking maybe I didn't have to have that?
No, no.
None at all.
You know, I feel great.
You know, I'm not, like, worried about, okay, what is it doing now?
What is it, you know?
And guess what?
Now, I can swim, Dr. Oz.
It's like having built-in floaties.
Before, I would get in the pool and just, boom, sink.
And then after the surgery, I got in the pool, and I was like, hey, what's going on here?
All right!
This is nice!
This is all right!
Watch out, Michael Phipps!
It's coming your way.
So listen, folks knew you were coming.
I got lots of posts on Facebook about you.
Here's an honest question.
This is from Cherie.
She asks, this is her question, not mine.
Okay.
When you had your breasts removed, how did you decide how big to make your new breasts during your reconstruction?
Oh, that's a great question.
That is a great question.
You know, because I started with the reduction, you know, so I wanted them smaller.
And then when I found out I got cancer, I was like, you know what?
I'm going to go back to bigger boobs.
Because my way of poking cancer in the eye.
You know, hey, how about that?
Take that.
Look at my big boobs.
Huh?
So you got a question for me, I understand.
Yes.
Take it away.
I have a problem snoring.
Yeah.
Actually, I don't have a problem snoring.
My wife has a problem with my snoring.
Because when I'm asleep, apparently I'm snoring, but she wakes me up.
She does?
Yeah, to tell me I'm snoring.
Isn't that rude?
It's like, look, I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing.
I'm sleeping.
Don't wake me up because you can't sleep, you know.
She's speaking for all the stores out there.
Right.
So how can I help that?
Don't tell me the wine again, Doc.
No, no, no.
Not the wine.
The way after the wine, you know that story.
So I need to do a little physical exam on you.
Okay.
Okay?
All right.
Let's do it.
Let's walk over to my office here.
Okay.
I'll put you a little bed over here.
Oh, nice.
So once you hop up here.
Okay.
Pretend it's an examination table and lie on your back or your side or however you normally sleep.
So just pretend you're sleeping.
Well, do y'all have nudity here?
Yes.
This show's ready for everything.
All right.
I'll help you right off.
We won't do that there.
Do you sleep nude?
Just a little bit, because the hot flashes.
The hot flashes.
The hot flashes.
Yeah.
So you lie like that.
Uh-huh.
So that's the first mistake, because you lie on your back like that, and all of a sudden, all that tissue in your throat collapses back, and you sound like a kazoo.
Oh.
Right?
So we're going to change that, and I can understand exactly why this would bother the people of your life.
Okay.
All right.
So the most important thing is to open up that airway.
So the best way to prevent you from storing is to lie on your side.
But you don't lie on your side too much, I guess.
I can try.
I mean...
All right.
I can tell you right now you're not going to do that.
All right, here, hop up here.
I got a better idea for you.
Okay.
You're going to love this idea.
I built this for you.
These are your pantyhose.
Got it from your house.
They're very nice, by the way.
So you take the pantyhose, right?
You put tennis ball in one of the foots.
I'm coming back to this in a second.
Stay with me here, all right?
If you don't mind...
Is this some Fifty Shades of Dr. Oz going on in here?
What you doing, Dr. Oz?
Fifty shades of Dr. I. That's great.
So come over here.
Let me fifty shades you.
Put your arms up.
Put your arms up.
I'm kidding.
I'm kidding.
So now turn around here.
So I'm going to tie this up here.
I'm tying the stocking, not Wanda.
Put this little ball back here.
And as you tie this ball back here, it's now going to be a little bit of a hindrance.
You're not going to want to lie on your back.
Because every time you lie on your back, it's going to remind you of tying your side.
You want to give it a try?
Okay.
I'm going to pretend I'm your wife.
I'm lying like this.
What do you think?
Oh, yeah, that's...
Oh, ouch.
That's a dislocate my spine right there.
What?
Roll towards me.
Roll this way.
See if it works better.
Oh, please.
You whine like this?
Wanda Sykes!
You gotta love her.
Listen, she puts on her great show wherever she is, and guess what?
She's coming to Jacksonville, Clearwater, Miami, Florida next week, and lots of other great cities, too.
Catch this woman.
She's funny as anything.
We'll be right back.
Next.
Will wine help you to live longer?
Can coffee make you feel younger?
We're investigating the facts about age-old products that claim to be the fountain of youth.
What works and what doesn't.
Uncovering the truth about anti-aging secrets.
Coming up next.
Whoever said a doctor's visit isn't fun has obviously never been to the Dr. Oz show.
Is that right?

- Woo! - Everyone wants to feel younger and live longer, but before you spend hard earned money on products promising the fountain of youth, meet the man uncovering but before you spend hard earned money on products promising the fountain of youth, In his new book, Spring Chicken, journalist Bill Gifford spent a year investigating what works and what doesn't.
So what is it about anti-aging that got you excited?
Spent a year of your life investigating it.
Well, I hit my 40s, and like a lot of us, I started feeling different from just how I'd felt 10 years earlier.
So I started getting curious about this phenomenon that affects us all, and yet is still a biological mystery.
What was the most surprising thing you found?
Well, the most surprising thing was that scientists are finding these sort of longevity pathways that are programmed into our cells and our genomes.
And they're trying to unlock those, but at the same time, there's a lot of junk out there in the name of anti-aging.
So I went to a convention of anti-aging doctors in Orlando, and there was all kinds of supplements and hormones and diets that had no scientific support.
There was a supplement called Virgin Again.
Virgin Again.
Virgin Again.
That's hard to do.
Good luck with that.
That's right.
Let's get to what works and what doesn't.
The stuff that you found in particular for anti-aging.
First, we're talking about resveratrol pills.
Now, resveratrol is found in red wine.
There's a supplement that you make from that that has been promising for years anyway to help people live longer and healthier.
You see, the truth about this anti-ager is that it doesn't really work.
Right.
It's frustrating because in the lab and especially in fat mice, resveratrol is amazing stuff.
But there haven't been a lot of good studies in humans because when we take it, only about 1% of it gets into our bodies.
But in fairness, we can't really tell yet, right?
Because you have to study it in humans for...
Oh, they need to do many, many more studies.
There's 5,000 studies in mice and 20 studies in humans.
What about the red wine?
We talk about that all the time.
Does that work?
Right.
Well, there's a tiny amount of resveratrol in red wine, but there are other good things.
And that's why huge European studies have shown fantastic benefits of red wine.
You know, it...
It works.
It relaxes your arteries, protects against Alzheimer's, on and on.
Thank goodness.
I talk about red and white all the time.
That would be a bummer.
That's good news.
I hear you bring good news.
Good news.
All right, let's talk about coffee.
Manufacturers often said that the chemicals in coffee can give you more energy, make you feel younger.
You see, the truth about these anti-ageuses, they actually do work.
Right.
They like coffee.
Coffee's good.
I wouldn't be here without it.
They used to think it was bad for you, but that was because people had a cup of coffee in one hand and a cigarette in the other hand.
Yes.
So when they took out the cigarette, they found that it's actually good.
A 2012 study in the New England Journal found that actually the more coffee you drink, the more protected you are against mortality.
This is really important.
There's actually studies showing that drinking coffee lowers risk of dying from a wide range of problems, diabetes, heart disease.
Let me take you to cancer for a second.
Let me show you what happens when you drink coffee, because it actually depends a bit on how much you have.
So let's say you have two cups of coffee a day.
That cuts your risk of colon cancer by 25%.
If you have three cups a day, that cuts your risk of liver cancer by 40%.
About four cups a day.
Well, that helps with head and neck cancers and quite a bit, 39%.
Five cups a day cuts down the risks of brain cancer.
What about a whopping six cups a day?
Well, for men, it cuts the risk of prostate cancer.
We don't know about women, but that's a pretty good benefit.
Now, this is a lot of coffee.
I mean, look at that curve, though.
And this is the thing that's interesting to me.
You can actually make a little line showing that the more coffee you drink, the more benefits you get in some cancers.
But even small amounts can make a big difference.
So, Bill, is it all coffee?
Is it caffeinated coffee, decaf?
Well, the New England Journal study found no difference between caffeinated and decaf.
But I think with the cancer effect you're talking about, I think that's mostly the caffeinated.
Isn't that correct?
I think caffeine plays a big role in it.
But again, I'm sort of surprised that six cups of coffee doesn't create other side effects for folks.
But if it doesn't, what we're learning is this is a product that has naturally been around for a while.
Maybe we're safe with it.
There's a reason we've been drinking it for thousands of years.
Let me touch on one more, hormone therapy.
This is a hot-button issue for a lot of women.
This includes estrogen and testosterone.
Of course, they all decline as we age.
Bill says the truth about these anti-agers is they do not work.
That's a little surprising.
Right.
Well, hormones make the world go round.
But they decline as we get older, and it's not as simple as just putting them back.
Our older cells are sort of fundamentally different from our younger cells, and that's why the Women's Health Study found in 2002 that women on long-term hormone therapy had more heart attacks, more breast cancer, more stroke.
And then when women stopped taking the hormones, breast cancer rates went off a cliff, 10% down.
So what about women who have perimenopausal symptoms?
Women who are taking it not to live longer, but to live better for the years around menopause.
Right, right.
So the expert consensus right now is that it's safe for relief of those symptoms for short periods, three to five years, and even then in women under 60. So once you get beyond that, you start to be experimenting on yourself.
Where if you're at 60 and haven't had menopause, you're going pretty well already, I guess.
Yes, no.
You're going to live a long time.
Bill, thanks for joining us.
Be sure to check out Bill's new book, Spring Chicken, for more anti-aging secrets that work.
work I'll be right back.
I am a big olive oil fan.
My grandmother swears that a little extra virgin olive oil under your eyes will prevent wrinkles and she looks amazing.
I do it every night.
Share your remedy on Facebook.com slash Dr. Oz.
Coming up, it's been called back boobs, bra bulge, and rear rolls.
So how do you eliminate that precisely back fat?
Simple exercise moves and the right-fitting bra can blast that bulge bye-bye.
Banish that back fat once and for all, next.
Can your past life hold the key to healing you in this life?
How do you know it's not just some trick of the mind?
Can a new experiment give you a glimpse of former lives?
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
How many women can relate to this?
You've got all kinds of names for it, right?
You call it back boobs, bra bulge, rear rolls.
Guys don't talk like that.
I've got that from my producers, those words.
Today, I'm going to show you how to eliminate back fat.
Now, who here is willing to play with me today?
Who's willing to admit they've got a little bit of back fat?
All right.
You shot so close to the front, I can't resist.
Come on down.
What's your first name?
Shumaya.
Shumaya?
Yeah.
All right.
Shumaya's joining me.
So what bothers you about back fat?
I mean, I just don't like the way it looks on my clothes.
It makes me look fat, very uncomfortable.
The way it hangs from under, it's not pretty.
And why is it that it happens?
That's the big question everyone has.
I don't know, but I hope you'll help me figure this out.
I am gonna help you.
You came to the right place.
Let me start by explaining what it is.
What is that fat?
It's actually not just the skin.
The back fat develops deep inside the back where you have a system of muscles, four muscles that are interwoven, nice, big, thick muscles when you're young anyway.
But you have these little spaces, right, underneath the muscle and around the muscle, and you actually fill in these boxes with fat sometimes.
Even though you don't want to, it accumulates there.
And then, as the fat gets larger and you get a little bit older, the muscle begins to get thin, And then gradually pulls the muscle and the fat around it down.
And it looks like that, right?
And then guess what?
You put on an ill-fitting bra, and that accentuates the extra tissue.
You got your attention now, didn't I, everybody?
Let's move on to the fixes here.
I'm going to banish the back fat.
The way to do that is to get the right bra.
That's the first step.
I asked Janae Luciani to join us.
She's the author of The Bra Book.
Thank you.
I got a couple ideas, but let's start with the most obvious one that accentuates the fat.
Janae, walk us through this.
Can you tell if Shumaya's wearing the right size bra?
Absolutely.
Well, you know, most of us are wearing the wrong size bra at one point in our lives, and there's some quick tests we can do.
So, Dr. Oz, I'll walk you through it.
Audience, you guys can follow along, too, just to see, specifically with back bulging, if your bra is too tight, that's really going to give you that issue.
So, look at the straps, okay?
So, if you're getting the straps digging in anywhere, you're getting any pain, shoulder and back pain, any red marks, anything like that, that's probably too small.
And then, also, lift up your arms.
And you can look right around where the underwire is.
It should sit flush.
So if it's lifting up, riding up the breast tissue, or the band is riding up in the back, you're in the wrong size.
I have no underwire in mine.
You don't need it.
You're good.
Jeremiah, how long have you been wearing that bra?
It's my favorite bra.
So I've had it for some years, like two, three years.
Years?
Years.
I mean, this is like the bra that when I want to look sexy, I feel good.
I mean, it might not be the right size.
Okay, I'm going to give you a really good tip here.
Every six months to a year, you should be replacing your bra.
Wear and tear as we're wearing it, as we're washing it.
It's stretching out.
It's changing and losing its shape.
So we want to make sure that we're replacing our bras.
Also a great tip is when you're bra shopping, make sure that you try on the bras to the middle to the tightest hook, okay?
Because you want to give yourself, as you're like walking around in your bra, it's breaking in just like you're breaking in your shoes, right?
Just like a great pair of shoes.
So you want to make sure you're giving it room and then you can move it along to the looser hook.
Now if you're wearing it on the tighter hook and it's getting a little loose, it's probably time to replace it.
And how do you tell if you bought the right size bra to begin with?
Give us some tips on that.
Absolutely.
Well, I'm going to do a quick measuring.
I'm going to show you how to measure at home, right?
So this is how you get the right bra size.
You need the sewing tape measure, not the kind that's like in your husband's toolbox, right?
Not the construction tape.
This kind right here.
And it's just two quick measurements.
So you're going to go right around the fullest, sorry, I'm manhandling you here a little, the fullest part of your bust just above the nipple line, and you're going to record that measurement.
I'm not going to adjust it, although it's a little bit off.
Right?
I know, right?
Be awkward.
And then you're going to pull it just below your bust and get the second measurement here.
And then you're going to subtract the bust measurement from the band measurement.
And then each inch difference is a cup size.
So one inch is an A cup, two inches is a B cup, and so on and so forth.
So what size are you wearing?
Have you been wearing?
I believe it's 36C. Okay, I just measured you at a 36E. Whoa!
E! So clearly you're in the right band size, which can happen sometimes, but when you move up in the cup, then you're not going to get that bulging in everything that you've been getting this whole time with the back band and the cups.
Wow.
Jay, thank you very much.
You're welcome.
Thank you.
Now you can brag about, you can be E-cups.
Alright, the next fix actually has to do with the muscles I showed you back there.
I want you to do the right workout.
Fitness expert Lacey Stone is here to show us how spot fixing problems, fat problems, is not easy to do.
Does it work for the back?
Yeah, I mean, we're gonna do some moves that are gonna really target the areas that you were talking about with our bra friend.
Okay.
Let's get these dumbbells.
The first move is called a crescent lunge.
Okay.
It's yoga inspired.
So basically what you're gonna do is you're gonna stand tall, just take back your right leg, Just like this, in a lunge position.
So we're gonna lift up over our heads, stick out that chest, and then even more, like, open it up, bending at those elbows, open your heart.
Do you feel that in your back a little bit, in your lats?
And then you bring it back up, okay?
That's a great move.
How many would you do of those?
For reps, I'd say you do 12 reps and then you switch legs.
Okay.
So you do 12 on the other side.
Second exercise is called reverse fly.
Yes.
So this is great.
You're going to come down, slight bend in your knee at the hip joint.
You're going to come forward, working that reverse delt.
Your scapula is coming into your spine.
Bring it up.
Do you feel it right there?
That's right in the area of the bra that we were talking about earlier for the back fat.
You're looking good.
How many of these do you do?
Well, again, three sets of 12 reps, I'd say.
You know, if you do a heavier weight, then you would do less reps.
Okay?
Okay.
So that's one move.
And the last move we're going to do, they called a Superman, but there's two ladies here today, so let's call it a Superwoman.
I'm in.
Superwoman.
Okay.
You ready, Superwoman?
Yes!
Okay.
All right.
We're going to take it down.
You're just going to lay on your stomach.
Okay.
Oh, that's not bad.
No, it's great.
This is good.
And you're going to take your arms out over your body, just like Superman.
Yeah?
And you're going to lift up, and you're going to feel that in your lower back.
Muffin top area.
Okay.
And I would say hold it for about 30 seconds, beginner, 45, intermediate, one minute, advanced.
It's starting to bother me, so let's drop it down, guys.
But how many times do you do it before you start feeling like your back fat is gone?
Well, you know, you've got to be consistent.
The more you do it, the better.
I say try to do it three times per week, and then in about two to three weeks, you're going to start seeing results.
It's going to start getting tighter, and you're going to become the superhero that you were born to be.
Oh, help me!
Okay, we'll be right back.
Keep going, keep going.
Help me!
Chef Rocco Di Spirito is back to help you cook your butt off.
He says you can lose up to one pound a day with his classic Italian dishes.
Recipes with fat-burning ingredients to help you lose weight.
And cooking and eating them will make you lose even more.
Today, chef, best-selling author, and my friend Rocco Despirito is back.
He's going to tell you how to cook your butt off.
That's the title of his book as well.
Welcome back to the show, as always.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Appreciate it.
Works for me, you see?
Yes.
It's all gone.
Show it off.
Go on.
Show it off.
Show it off.
Look at that.
All gone, my butt.
There wasn't much there to begin with.
A pound a day, you say, we can lose with this program.
Yes, you can.
Yes.
First of all, I make delicious, low-calorie meals.
Then I use fat-burning foods.
And then on top of that, we figured out that cooking is a calorie-burning exercise.
So some of these dishes, you burn more calories than they contain when you make them.
So you'll lose weight by eating my foods, but if you cook and eat my foods, you'll lose even more weight.
So the promise is we can actually cook our butts off.
You can.
You can literally cook your butts off.
Let's just check this out.
So we've actually turned the kitchen into a gym.
We've got Corinne, Tracy, and Shatara here.
Yes.
I should warn you.
Shatara confided to me in the break that her true name was Shaterrable.
Is that right?
It is Shaterra.
Oh, Shaterra.
Shaterra.
Yes, but sometimes I'm called Shaterrable.
Shaterra, all right.
Just keep grating.
So they're whisking, they're grating, they're chopping.
Is this really a workout?
This is actually a workout.
I'm not sure if you can feel it, but if you wear your heart rate monitor, you can see your heart rate actually going up when you cook.
And you can burn up 150 to 250 calories an hour during cooking, the average person can.
So, while they're working hard over there...
And you're making cauliflower rice.
Very cool.
Let's get serious about this, because we've got to actually show people how to make fat-burning foods.
Go ahead, be the chef today.
So, Rocco, you're the best at this.
I want you to explain how it's possible you're going to have fat-burning foods.
So, define what they are, and then show us a dish.
So, there are a group of foods that are known as thermogenic foods.
The eating of them and storing of them elevates your heart rate and therefore your metabolism.
So they help you lose weight and burn calories, mostly fat.
So lean meats like poultry, eggplant happens to be a thermogenic food because of all the fiber.
Cauliflower is a negative calorie food.
It actually burns more calories than it contains.
So these three foods together really create a super dish that will help you lose weight.
What's the dish and what's the calorie?
What's the penalty?
It's chicken with glazed eggplant and cauliflower rice.
We actually make rice out of cauliflower, which I hope you'll do it for me.
It's 190 calories, but you burn 157 calories cooking this, so it's a net of only 33 calories.
All right, I'm going to start burning.
I literally only grate, right?
So you grate in a circular motion, and what we're doing is we're taking those little florets and turning them into what looks and feels a lot like rice.
And you're reducing the calories by at least 200 proportions.
Look at that.
Wow, you're a super...
That's the best I've ever seen.
Not everyone can do this like I did.
All right.
So, we add some chicken to the pan.
I use chicken thigh.
It just has a little bit more flavor.
So that goes together.
Sautees for a few minutes.
You add ginger, garlic, a little red pepper flake.
And then you add your favorite source of aminos.
Could be soy sauce, could be coconut aminos, could be any amino out there.
You're looking for the 50% less sodium.
And then I added some balsamic vinegar, which of course has no calorie consequence at all.
This all goes together.
Okay.
And then we pour this on top of the cooked rice.
This cooked in our microwave for about two minutes.
That's how we prep the cauliflower?
Yes, just by cooking in the microwave covered.
Because it's still a little bit crunchy, which is nice.
Crunchy is good, right?
Yeah, I like it.
A little bit on the vegetables is good.
So instead of rice, it's cauliflower.
And look at all...
Look at that huge portion for 190 calories.
Now...
There's even more.
If you want to make it a little extra special, there's one trick I use in the book, and it's using baby food.
Baby food?
Yeah, organic baby food is the purest food you can find.
It has no added salt, sugar, preservatives.
Make sure the label has one ingredient on it.
And these are the types I use in the book.
So I use prunes, which we can add to this dish.
And help make the sauce a little tastier.
Sweet potato, carrots, winter squash, if you want to make my squash risotto.
Whatever gave you the idea of baby food?
Well, you know, just shopping, looking around, I noticed that they're now available organic, and they have very few additives, and they taste great.
They're the purest forms of food you can get.
All right, so the ultimate test, of course, is with our viewers.
So, Karin, come on over here.
Tracy, bring Chatera.
Because I know she'll be very picky about this.
I hope you're not too picky.
No.
You're going to be very gentle.
Believe me, I can tell they're picky already.
We just cooked this for you.
These are some picky women here.
I'm going to be picky too.
Go ahead, take that.
Thank you.
So if you did all the grating and all the chopping, you'd have burned 157 calories.
So this is only a 33 calorie portion of food.
And by the way, you each have a quarter of the portion.
It's delicious.
This is good.
Right?
If this is 33 calories...
What did you say?
It's delicious.
Here you go.
Here's the money I owe you for that.
Get back after the show.
Without any money exchanging hands, I'll tell you, this really is delicious.
Congratulations.
Thanks for being here.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.
Look your butt off.
It's available now.
If you want to see more of Rocco's delicious smoke gallery recipe, check out his healthy substitution series at DrOz.com.
Be right back.
This is really good.
All new Oz.
Past life regression.
The idea of tapping into past lives.
How do you know it's not just some trick of the mind?
It may sound like science fiction.
Why is it so emotional for you?
You never think that this kind of thing really can happen.
Can a new experiment give you a glimpse of former lives?
When I was there, I really felt everything.
See if your past life holds the key to healing you in this life.
Surreal.
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Here's a question about weight loss that has for years stumped most doctors.
When you lose the weight, where does the fat go?
You ever thought about that question?
You don't know, do you?
No one knows where the fat goes.
So I was curious to know what the viewers thought.
So I asked you, and you came up with some, well, very amusing answers.
Where's the fat go?
That's a good question.
Like, pee it out into the atmosphere.
Fat goes to fat land.
It goes up to the clouds and it comes back down on other people.
It just disappears.
To the muscle.
Where do I think the fat goes?
I think I sweat it out.
To the bones.
It melts.
I think it just shrinks.
The doctor sucks it out.
I think I poop it out.
Going in the bathroom.
I didn't know that's a TMI. Do you want to know the correct answer, everybody?
It's really cool.
There's a brand new study that actually showed this, that when you lose weight, you actually breathe the fat out in the form of carbon dioxide.
Think about that.
Everyone take a deep breath in.
And exhale the fat.
You feel skinny already?
Now I'll let that stat go off you because guess what?
It's time for in case you missed it.
First, here's a cool secret, a cooking secret for weight loss.
I got this from Chef Rocco Dispirito.
It is baby food.
Now Rocco says it's great to use as a fat substitute to give some moisture and zing to dishes.
So pick whatever flavor you want, but it's a wonderful source and don't let people laugh at you because it really does work.
Finally, I want you to be careful of dubious people online that make it seem like I'm endorsing their products because I don't.
