Break a Carb Addiction While Still Eating Bread and Pasta | Dr. Oz | S6 | Ep 102 | Full Episode
| Copy link to current segment

Time Text
Today on Dr. Oz.
I'm tackling one of your biggest addictions.
Carbs.
But your love affair with bread and pasta doesn't have to end.
I'm excited about this because you've got two really big new ideas.
The plan to eat carbs to beat carbs.
Plus, Dancing with the Stars judge Bruno Tonioli rates the newest celebrity health trends.
I'm chugging myself up.
Will it be bravo or brav-no?
Coming up next on Oz.
Thank you very much.
Today, today I am tackling one of your biggest addictions, carbs, with a revolutionary new idea.
I'm going to show you how you can eat carbs to beat carbs.
But first, I asked the Oz Nation to tell us about the most memorable carb meal of their life.
I've never met a carb that I didn't like, but I love my mom's fettuccine alfredo.
My best carb memory is my Grammy's fresh bread.
It was so warm and delicious.
My most memorable part has to be my grandmother's gnocchi.
She makes it with real butter and whole cream and it's delicious.
When I had little kids, I started making them in the shape of words.
So I made one for you, Dr. Oz.
It's so good.
It's like 50 shades of carbs.
They're warm and we make them with a red sauce.
They melt in your mouth.
I love them.
I have to have them right now.
Now, if that sounds like you and your mouth is just watering right now, you just might be a carb addict.
That's why carbohydrate guru Chris Powell is here.
I love having you here.
What you just saw there, people are having more than just a little addiction problem.
They're having a full-blown love affair with carbs.
What gives?
Well, we have an emotional relationship, connection with carbohydrates, and it's much more than that.
Like, these carbs are comfort foods.
I mean, look at the ladies in the tape, right?
They're talking about these carbohydrates bringing back memories of childhood and all these things.
things like if I say macaroni and cheese or chocolate chip cookies, homemade, fresh out of the oven, it takes us back to that comfort place.
But then there's of course a little, there's the other side of the coin here and that's the fact that these carbohydrates, they can cause these incredible cravings, not just emotional but physical.
But there are also incredible benefits to carbs and that's what we're going to talk about here today.
This is a plan that everyone can use to beat that carb addiction.
I'm excited about this because you've got two really big new ideas.
Pay attention to these.
They're going to change your life if we do them right.
Come on over.
The first big concept is to use fat to fight carb cravings.
And this is, again, counterintuitive, so explain why this is so critical.
Absolutely.
And a lot of times I say fat, and people go, what are you talking about with fats?
But of course, you know, carbs...
What are you talking about?
They got such a bad rap already.
So it's like, what are you going to eat?
Carbohydrates, fats, proteins?
It's like all of our macronutrients are like the bad guys these days.
But the thing is, when you eat these carbohydrates, because our body can digest them so quickly, blood sugar levels go through the roof.
And then when the blood sugar levels come back down, we're in the red zone.
We're craving even more, so we're riding that blood sugar roller coaster.
But fats are this amazing, powerful tool for actually curbing carbohydrate cravings.
And that's what we want to do.
In order to actually beat the addiction for these carbohydrates, we need to stabilize those blood sugars, and you know better than I do, Fats can do that miraculously.
So very specifically, Chris wants us all to have, and all the carb addicts out there in particular, the Fifty Shades of Grey kind of carb addicts, can have one tablespoon of almond butter 30 minutes before each meal.
I'm gonna show you why this is gonna be important for you.
It has to do with your anatomy.
So, Chris, you've never done an organ before.
This is my first organ demo.
How exciting!
So, stomach.
You've got the esophagus here, the swallowing tube.
It goes into the stomach, and the gain is won and lost at the outlet of the stomach, right here.
Chris, feel that if you don't mind.
Yeah, absolutely.
That's called the pyloric valve.
There's a muscular ring there.
It regulates the speed at which...
Food can leave your stomach.
That valve is between the ziti in your stomach and the sugar in your bloodstream.
And that fat that you're going to be eating is going to slow that process down, let that pyloric valve close down.
So the biggest thing is, and you said it yourself, you always want that tablespoon of almond butter and the water about 30 minutes before the meal, and it totally keeps you out of the red zone.
Now keep in mind, there is a calorie impact to that almond butter.
It's about 100 calories.
But if you're going to a Mexican food restaurant, I'd much rather have those 100 calories.
Sure.
To prevent me from overeating 500 calories of chips before the meal, right?
Right.
So, let me ask the audience.
Who here thinks they might be a carb addict?
A big carb addict.
Everybody.
Come on over here, man, with the multicolored shirt.
That was a very smart shirt to wear today.
It calls out the people who are really going to speak honestly about this.
Chris Powell.
You can hold that.
What's your name?
Ayana.
Ayana.
Come on over here, Ayana.
Thank you.
So, it's right there.
So, Ayana, here's the deal.
Yes.
I need to find out a little bit more about you, and then if you qualify as a true carb addict, someone who's having a love affair with this stuff, then you do.
So, describe it.
Describe the addiction.
I have to have bread all the time with everything.
I have three children, so I'm like, oh, great, you know, yeah.
Hamburgers, you know, let's have some garlic bread with all the butter and the cheese.
Yes.
All the way, all that.
Are you craving carbs now?
I am.
What would you like to have right now?
Well, the bagel over there looks good.
We haven't got to the bagel yet even.
You qualify, you qualify.
Okay, here's the thing.
I'm giving you your almond butter.
Okay.
A tablespoonful of the almond butter.
Okay.
And then here's some water.
I'm not going to rush you, but that's got to go down now.
I'm going to come back to you at the end of the segment.
Okay.
And then if you're okay with it, I want an honest opinion about how much you actually crave the food.
Let's say that bakery you just pointed out over there.
Let me see.
I'm going to test you.
The doctors have to watch their patients take the pill the first time.
Let me see you all.
Let's take medicine.
It's not bad.
It's thick.
It's thick.
You work on that.
I'm coming back to you.
Keep the mic.
You'll need it.
Thank you.
If you choke, yell for me.
Here's some water, too.
You want that water?
It'll help you out there.
Thank you.
All right.
So, that was the first big idea.
The second big idea to break a carb addiction is to have bread and pasta every other day.
I'm going to say it again.
We want you, Chris says, and works with his clients, to have bread and pasta and some carbs every other day.
Please explain why you would take this dramatic change to sleep.
Sure.
And so, look.
I mean, how many millions of people out there have tried and failed and tried and failed on a diet?
And the biggest thing that I found that I'm up against is this emotional and psychological need, these cravings for these comfort foods.
So if you can't beat them, why don't you join them and be really smart about it so we can actually create a cool little cycle to lose fat while you're still eating those comfort foods.
I mean, it almost sounds too good to be true, but it really does work this way.
I actually want to understand this better.
It's only going to work if you do it the right way.
So take us to a typical week by which you may actually use carbs as an ally instead of your enemy.
Absolutely.
So right here, we're looking at it, just a basic week right here.
We're going to start off on Monday with a good, clean, low-carb day.
This is going to be our fat burning day right here because, you know, you come off the weekend, everyone's a Monday dieter.
You're like, okay, here we go.
Most people are great with their diets on Monday, right?
So we're going to go low-carb, burning fat on these days.
Now on Tuesday, you're going to be like, okay, I'm totally over this diet thing.
I really want a bagel for breakfast, right?
Well, guess what?
You can have that bagel for breakfast.
You totally can because I'm going to allow you to reward yourself every other day on this diet.
So if you can't have it today, you can always have it tomorrow.
So Monday, you've eaten clean.
You did great.
You've burned a lot of fat.
Tuesday, you want to start off with that bagel?
Fantastic.
Ayala was going to rush the stage with her friends over there.
She's still eyeing that bagel right now.
It's still safe though.
The bagel's safe.
Let that almond butter kick in.
You've got 20 minutes.
So I noticed you have almond butter here also, but an apple.
Yes, absolutely, because an apple is a beautiful, healthy, whole, natural carbohydrate that's high in fiber as well.
So we go from these low-carb, fat-burning days to a higher-carb day, which is going to help boost your metabolism.
And then you're feeling good.
You had that reward food.
On Wednesday, we're going to drop you right back into a low-carb, fat-burning day.
Come the next day, here comes Thursday, and you're like, oh, I really want pizza for lunch.
It's very, very rare on this show that you'll see pizza on the set.
That's a pizza.
Absolutely.
So once again, we've got this high-carb, metabolic-boosting day.
But it's one meal, right?
Just one meal.
Reward yourself.
Indulge for that one meal.
Get that taste of whatever it is that you're looking for, and then surround yourself with your other meals for the day.
Should be real, whole, natural carbohydrates.
All the good ones that are high in fiber.
We're back down again on Friday.
Right back down into a low-carb, fat-burning day.
Then, oh, you want pancakes with the kids for breakfast on Saturday?
Mm-hmm.
Have at it.
It's totally okay.
Boost your metabolism on these days.
And of course, here we are.
You want to do an Italian lunch with the family.
You know, if you want some pasta and spaghetti and meatballs.
And boom!
Now, big reward meal.
Spike your metabolism through the roof.
So can Sunday be the whole day of cheating?
I recommend against it.
It really depends on who you are.
If cheating, especially if, you know, sometimes it can be a slippery slope for a lot of people.
And you'll also notice that all of these meals, when I mentioned them, they were never dinner.
Because any time that you're eating after 7 and you start to reward yourself, that can be a very slippery slope.
And before you know it, you're in that red zone from 7 o'clock until you go to bed.
So let's go through this game.
So it's low.
We go low.
Up a little bit.
High.
Metabolic boosting.
Not up here.
It's just one meal.
We're fat burning.
A little bit.
Boosting metabolism.
Fat burning.
Boosting metabolism.
Fat burning.
Boosting metabolism.
Spiking the metabolism through the roof.
And then we're going to drop right back down into it the next day.
It's like the wave.
Yeah.
And all of a sudden, once again, it's that whole premise that if you can't have it today, you can always have it tomorrow.
And all of a sudden...
Dieting, finding a structured nutrition program, it becomes so much more realistic for people, and that's one of the main ingredients right there, is actually believing that you can do it.
When I first heard the concept, it's true.
Yeah, please do a plug if that makes sense.
What I like the most about the whole plan, and you pointed to this, is you're never 24 hours or more away from a cheat meal, which means where those cravings, which I know are emotional a lot of times, who wants to be on a program for the rest of their life, the next day you get it, or later that day you get it.
Totally.
Or you just had it.
All of those qualify to deal with that.
All right, where's Iyanla?
Yeah.
I'm coming over to you, honey.
So, how's it going?
First of all, did you get the peanut butter done okay?
I did.
Chris, grab the bagel.
Yeah, you bet.
I'm just going to test you.
I'm just going to test you.
Obviously, peanut butter tastes good.
The almond butter tastes good, so you're okay with that.
The water helped a little bit?
Mm-hmm.
Did she really eat it all?
She didn't share it, right?
All right.
So, I wanted to see what you think about the craving.
I'm just holding it here.
I'm not mentioning it.
So, what do you think about your cravings now?
It definitely did the job because it doesn't look as appealing anymore.
Even the wafting smell?
Yeah, no.
Want a bagel?
I have to double check here.
How about this one?
Yeah, no.
No?
Okay.
It works.
It does work.
Yes.
Folks, let's recap.
Two big ideas, right?
We talked about using fat to fight off carbs.
Yes.
And the second thing we talked about was using bread and pasta every other day.
Not a whole day, just one meal to get you over there.
Can we do a wave around this?
Let's just, yeah, humor me on this thing.
So we're going to go down.
Yeah, here we go.
You don't have to do the weight, right?
Go down.
A little low carb.
And we go high carb.
And then low carb.
And then high carb.
And you keep doing this, you lose weight.
You keep going.
And then high carb reward yourself.
That's it right there.
Chris's entire plan to break your carb addiction, you go to DrOz.com.

Coming up next, Dancing with the Stars judge Bruno Tonioli.
Outrageous and outspoken.
Who better to decide which new celebrity health trends and stories deserve a 10?
Which are great and which to avoid?
You be the judge.
Coming up next...
Nicknamed the half-ton killer, she just lost 800 pounds.
Wait till you see her now.

You may be at risk.
All new Dr. Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
He judges celebrity dance moves on Dancing with the Stars.
So who better to help decide which new celebrity health trends deserve?
A ten.
Please welcome the most outrageous judge from Dancing with the Stars, Bruno Toniali.
You love it.
You don't.
Do I have it?
Yeah, you have it.
Do I have it?
Oh.
In the back pit.
Yeah.
Bruno.
Oh my goodness.
Thank you for having me.
I love having you.
So quick, so sharp.
But we gotta go for it.
Yes.
Before I get to the show, because I do want to talk about how Trent's 10 years doing this show, still knocking it out of the park.
Season 20, and it feels like it's the first time.
It's like rediscovering your first love every time.
And then he grabs me.
It is.
It is.
You know what I mean, ladies.
Yes.
It is.
It's a show that is never phoned in.
It renews itself.
The kids are brilliant.
The choreography is stunning.
Suzanne Somers and Patti LaBelle are on this year.
Legends!
They're on this show all the time.
What is it that makes them special, and what do you think is going to happen with them?
They're amazing ladies.
I mean, legends.
I mean, Patti LaBelle, voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?
I mean, we are talking people that are known all over the world.
They have fantastic careers.
They're great performers.
They're huge fans.
It's fantastic to have them.
Legends!
Legends!
So, I want Bruno to join us.
As passionate as he is about dancing, he's passionate about health as well, because dancing gets you there.
So, Celebrity Health Trends, we're going to talk about them.
You ready to judge?
I'm ready, I'm ready.
I want two other world experts to help us.
Okay.
Frankly, any viewer of Dr. Osh will be a world expert.
Joy and Sarah, come on down.
From our audience.
They are also big fans of Dancing with the Stars.
A little twirl as well.
Oh, she's a dancer.
A chorus line.
I really need this job.
I'm sorry.
I'm just moving.
Hello, gorgeous.
Are you excited?
I'm sorry.
You can do this?
Yes.
Let's walk over here.
The three of you are going to take your place in the judges' tables.
Only the best for you, bro.
Only the best for you.
I love speaking French.
I can speak many tongues.
Yes you can.
She knows what I mean.
Yes, they're running.
What do you want me to say?
You're in the middle.
You're in the middle.
Here's the deal.
I'm going to explain a celebrity health trend.
These are all things that actually folks are talking about every day.
And I want you to tell me if it's a bravo, which means it's worth trying.
Makes sense.
Or if it's bravno, which means it's something you need to avoid.
Audience, you can chirp in as well.
But I want to hear from the judges first.
Are you ready to go?
First celebrity health trait, Gwyneth Paltrow.
She's been on the show a lot as well.
She'd be great on Dancing with the Stars.
Yes.
Vaginal steam spa treatment.
She's been talking about, basically, she says it's like sitting on a mini throne.
You know what we mean by throne in English?
Oh, I can feel it.
Yes.
I can feel it.
So, I'm channeling, I'm channeling the vagina.
That's right.
I would like to say that on TV, I hope.
All right, so you're sitting on a mini throne, right, with an herbal steam that cleanses the uterus, and apparently it balances female hormone levels.
This is according to Gwyneth.
Is it possible, judges, what do you think?
A bravo or a brav-no?
What do you think?
Actually, actually, girls, it's very European.
Because in Europe we have the bee, it channels, it's like a glamorous bee day.
And you have to be kind to your vagina.
You have to.
So, Gwyneth, darling, you're a bit out there, but I think it's a bravo.
You guys agree?
I completely agree.
Oh, good!
But we have a bravo no from our French-speaking member of the panel.
French speaking...
Mademoiselle, les bidets, vous ne connaissez pas les bidets?
You don't have bidets.
I do.
But it's very comfortable, because you know what you have?
You have a bit of a slosh after you've done your things.
Yes.
Yeah, no, not so much.
We're getting quite graphic.
Here's the answer, my friends.
It is...
Pravno.
Oh.
Rob, no.
Here's why I think it might work for Gwyneth and others.
It actually stimulates blood flow.
It's like getting a facial, but on your insides.
And that's a nice thing, because maybe it could be a turn-on for some women.
However, we said this on the show many, many times, the vagina is a self-cleaning oven.
Oh, you see, I didn't know that.
Self-cleaning.
Yes, you didn't know that.
I had no idea about that.
Yes, yes.
You get that next year on Dancing with the Stars.
Alright, the next celebrity health trend, Jennifer Lopez.
She reportedly sniffs grapefruit oil to help curb her appetite.
You have oil next to you.
Please take your oils out.
I have one here too.
So this is an interesting response.
She says that every time she gets hungry, she sniffs this.
And it smells literally like grapefruit oil.
Do you agree?
It smells lovely.
Yes.
Great.
He won't put me off my pizza.
No, no.
But what she said it does put her off her pizza.
She loses weight with this, she argues.
Is that possible?
Is it a bravo, meaning that it's true, or bravo?
No, that it's not.
Is it possible sniffing grapefruit, either from an oil like this or the actual fruit itself, can help with a diet?
Well, if it works for J-Lo, it must be a J-Go, will it?
J-Go.
Yeah.
Well, if you know what I mean...
She looks cute.
I'm guessing.
I still have my pizza, but I would say a bravo.
Bravos?
Yeah.
I would say bravo.
The judges are united.
Whatever J.Lo does, I'm going to do.
J.Lo wants, J.Lo gets.
Yes, yes.
Well, it turns out J.Lo, I think, is bravo.
Oh, you see.
Bravo, if you're an animal.
It's only been studied in animals so far, but a really cool thing they did, they gave animals grapefruit oil every 15 minutes, and that helped actually lower their appetite, and for that reason they lost weight.
When they numbed the noses, when they couldn't smell anymore and tried it, it didn't work.
So it's actually the smell itself that works.
Don't spend too much money.
Just find an odor that might help you.
Give it a shot.
We haven't studied it in humans.
Maybe you guys will prove it out there.
Can I keep it?
Keep that, yes.
No, it smells fantastic.
No, it does.
It smells fabulous.
It's an Italian grapefruit.
I'm turning myself on.
All right.
Yeah.
Doesn't it smell fabulous?
Ladies, don't touch the Charmin Rare.
Be careful of the motion dice.
All right, finally, is this a real study or a fake one?
There's a new report that says the kids are less likely, less likely to develop allergies if they live in a home where dishes are washed by hand.
By hand, rather than in a dishwasher.
What do you think?
You think it's bravo and true?
Or brav-no and a fake that I make it all up?
What do you guys think?
Dishwashers, could they be linked to allergies?
I think it's a bravo because I think things are over-sanitized.
I don't know, because, you know, when I was a kid in Italy, I was always in the dirt, and I never got ill.
I never got ill, ever.
And now everybody's sick, so I think maybe, again, I'm guessing, I'm not an expert, but for me, Dr. Tognoli, your vote is?
Bravo, ladies?
I think there may be some truth to that.
Let me see them all together.
Bravo, bravo.
Again, they're unanimous.
And you know what?
You're all right.
It's true.
These researchers found that children living in homes where dishes were washed by hand, rather than with a dishwasher, where we're actually less likely to get common allergies.
It may be a problem we have by being too clean in America.
Bruno, I love you, Sarah Dwight.
Fantastic having you on.
Thanks for helping out today.
Make sure to watch Bruno on Dancing with the Stars with all the Dr. Oz guests who are appearing this year as well every Monday night on ABC.
We'll be right back.
Next, soggy, mushy, gray, and bland.
Is your overcooked produce in need of veggie rehab?
Maximize taste and maintain nutrients with easy flavor shortcuts.
Fix those unhealthy mistakes and get the most out of your vegetables.
coming up.
Your veggies look gray, mushy, and I don't know, just plain old sad.
Or do you douse them and drown them with cheese or butter, hoping to make them taste better?
But if that's the case, then it's time for Veggie React.
That's what we're doing today.
We're going to fix the unhealthy and unpalatable mistakes you're making with your produce.
Training me are two experts who specialize in vegetables.
I call them my veggie doctor.
Dietician, Frances Larger-Roth.
She knows how to get the tricks, all the tricks in the trade to get the most nutrient bang out of your veggies.
And from America's Test Kitchen, Julia Collin-Davison.
She has all the flavor shortcuts to make veggies taste good.
Now, I'm going to start...
With one of my audience members who, well, frankly, doesn't actually know she's being sent to veggie rehab yet.
But her family wants her there for an unspeakable crime.
Take a look.
Dr. Oz, my mom always overcooks all of her vegetables.
They always come out so mushy and gross.
Just look at the broccoli.
It's so mushy and limp.
Veggie Rehab is here for you.
Come join the show.
Are you upset?
I am upset with her.
I won't be paying for college.
Who's paying for college now?
Mom.
Mom.
She'll still pay her.
Come on down here.
Well, thank you for joining us, Yvonne.
Nice to meet you.
So Yvonne, is that an accurate rendition of what happens at home?
Unfortunately.
All right.
Terrence, do you want to take it away?
What's the big mistake making broccoli mushy?
Okay, you are boiling all of those nutrients into the water.
Now, if you were going to make a soup out of that water, that would be one thing, but that's where all the nutrition is.
So look at this.
This is what you're doing to your broccoli.
It's so sad.
So we want it to be crisp.
We want it to be either raw or al dente.
So that's what we're going to do here today.
But those cancer-fighting nutrients, you're saying bye-bye to them in the water.
So Julia, teach us.
What's the best way to make an al dente broccoli?
Yeah, al dente.
You want to blanch them.
And blanching means just dunking them in boiling water for a very short amount of time.
Now the trick is, there's two parts to a broccoli.
There's the floret parts.
These cook very quickly.
These cook in about a minute.
And then there's the stem parts.
And these are delicious.
You peel them, you cut them into pieces like this.
They're very tender.
My favorite part.
Yep, but they take a little longer to cook.
They take two minutes.
So what we're gonna do is hot, boiling, salted water.
You're gonna add the stems.
You let them go for one minute.
Put your timer on.
Don't get distracted.
And then after a minute, you're gonna add the florets.
Again, one minute.
And then you're gonna take them out when they're all done.
Of course, I'm just showing you here.
They aren't quite done.
And they're going to get brighter green, right?
Yes, they are.
And then you want to put them in an ice water bath.
And so that's called shocking.
And what that does is it stops them from cooking and it preserves their nice green color.
And then to dry them, use a salad spinner.
And I'm going to show you a recipe with broccoli salad.
So, yeah, it's cold.
It retains the nice crispness.
We added a few cranberries and some almonds.
It's bound with a little mayonnaise and a little balsamic vinegar.
And it's a really interesting way to do broccoli.
It holds well, too.
So leftovers are great for lunch.
Rewind, if I can't stab one of these, they're so crip I can't stab them.
There you are.
Give that a taste, Sivan.
See what you think.
I'm not giving anything to your daughter, by the way.
She doesn't deserve it.
She doesn't deserve it.
This is delicious!
It's cool, isn't it?
She's also getting all that candy.
Thank you.
Nicely done.
Thank you for having to be with us.
All right.
Next, let's take a look at how Amrit cooks all of her vegetables.
Everything is either in cheese or in ranch, notice.
I think she really does need veggie rehab.
There you are.
Hi.
What is going on here?
Why do you have to douse and drench all your vegetables and all those kind of crazy things you're putting on them?
Well, I just feel like it's really bland if you don't put it on.
It just tastes better.
So, I mean, that's why I always put it on there.
But you've actually got a two-fold challenge here.
We've got a flavor challenge, which you're mentioning, and we also have a creaminess challenge.
They're a little bit different from each other, so we're going to give this cauliflower a big-time rehab.
Who's going to go first, Julia?
How do you deal with the flavor?
How do you maximize it?
The method you use can really bring out the flavor, the natural flavor in the cauliflower.
This method is called brown and braise.
So you want to brown it and I have some onions in here and this takes less than 10 minutes.
A little bit of oil.
You want to get them nice and brown and then we're going to add some spices.
And we're going to do an Indian profile.
So we're going to add some coriander.
Coriander is one of my favorite spices.
It really makes things come alive.
And notice I'm adding them to a relatively dry pan.
And this is crucial whenever you add spices, not just to this recipe, but really any kind of recipe.
Spices bloom their flavor in oil.
They're oil soluble.
So you want to stir them into a pan that has a little oil in it.
You want to stir them around for about a minute.
And now I'm going to pass the spoon over to the other doctor.
She's going to teach you about creaminess.
So you can still have that creaminess without adding mayonnaise and thick cream sauces, cheese sauces.
Yogurt.
So this is just plain yogurt.
We're going to add that in on top.
And then this is the braising part.
So we're adding our liquid.
We've got water.
And then also lime juice.
And that's going to perk up the flavor.
Anytime you add citrus, that is going to brighten the flavor of any dish.
And it's a great way to add flavor without adding any fat or extra calories.
Let's see again.
If you don't like the taste, it doesn't matter how beautifully we describe it.
That is really good.
Isn't that good?
Would your family like that?
No, no, no.
I know most of you are guilty of this next unhealthy veggie mistake.
It's peeling your produce.
So it's time to check into Veggie Rehab on this one as well, because Brittany is joining us for a little bit of help.
Hi, Brittany.
Why do you peel your veggies all the time?
What's going on?
Well, Dr. Oz, I feel like they're just too dirty.
I mean, look at this right here.
They're too dirty.
I overpeel them, and I just don't like them.
So this is a really big issue for me.
I would love, Francis, if you could scroll through.
What's the nutritional hit you take when you peel off those veggies?
Okay, you might be losing 20% of the nutrients in these vegetables when you peel them.
Okay, so definitely you're losing fiber.
The fiber is all in the skin, but you're also losing nutrients, especially in a potato and a sweet potato.
And you've got another powerful cancer fighter in the eggplant skin.
So let's find ways where we can make them taste really good without taking the skin off.
Okay.
Julia, what do you do about actually the texture of the skin, which a lot of folks, probably an issue for you too.
It's very chewy, and I have a major issue with texture.
Yeah.
Well, I'm going to show you how to make oven fries.
And so we're going to roast the potatoes, and I'll make it nice and crisp.
And when you make oven fries, the trick is not to toss the potatoes with the oil.
Put the oil...
On the baking sheet.
And you just want to brush it out nice and even.
And then we're going to take the salt and pepper, and again, not put it on the potatoes, we're going to sprinkle it over the baking sheet.
Now, what I've just done is made this non-stick.
The salt and the pepper, they act like little ball bearings, and they prevent the potatoes from sticking.
Very good idea.
And so then we're going to lay the potatoes on here, and you want to bake them in a really hot oven, about 475. Cover them with foil for the first five.
And then you take it off, and yeah, the best oven fries.
You've got to like that texture.
Isn't that good?
Wonderful ideas as well.
For all these tricks and recipes, check out America's Test Kitchen's new book.
It's called The Complete Vegetarian Cookbook.
You can find them on DrRoz.com as well.
We'll be right back.
Thank you, guys.

All new Oz.
She was nicknamed the half-ton killer and arrested for the murder of her nephew.
But she's innocent.
What changed?
Why did you decide to tell the truth?
How the heaviest woman in the world turned her life around and lost 800 pounds.
Plus, the dark side of teeth whitening.
The truth that could put your pearly whites in peril.
You may be at risk.
All new Dr. Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Today a special Ask Guys Mom Edition.
I'm clearing up all the confusion and answering your biggest questions about your children's health.
We'll get started with an audience member, Dina.
How are you?
You won the lottery.
What's your question?
Thank you.
My girls really struggle with constipation.
They are constipated monthly, if not weekly.
I've tried everything from making sure that they're properly hydrated to over-the-counter remedies.
And I'm really just getting tired of watching them struggle with this.
Is there something that you could suggest that might help us out?
Like you're literally watching them struggle?
Literally watching them struggle.
And how often do they have that kind of a problem?
At least, really at this point, at least once a week.
All right, let me give you some ideas and I'm going to...
Give me some other thoughts as well.
First of all, children's bowel movements can be very erratic, and the frequency therefore varies a lot, which is one of the big issues parents have because we sort of expect them to be as regular as we are.
That's unfortunately not how it always is going to be, but we do want it to be sort of smooth.
We've all been there, right?
A safe, all-natural constipation solution, because I like to try things in kids that are natural first, as we all would, is called the CRAP diet.
Okay.
That should be easy to remember.
Now, it is true that it will make you CRAP, but in addition, it stands for things.
It's an acronym.
So C is for cherries, R is for raisins, A is for apricots, and P is for prunes.
All of these are wonderful sources of fiber.
They'll make all of you guys go to the bathroom, too.
And you want to start with one serving a day because it does have a lot of fiber.
Okay.
And then move it up to two to three servings per day.
Sure.
All right.
Here, you know what?
Take these back and pass them out to the audience.
Okay.
Thank you very much.
Thank you, Dr. Oz.
All right.
Question number two is a Facebook post.
Sherry sent it to us.
Take a look.
She said, Dr. Oz, I have a teenager, a middle schooler, and a second grader, and it seems like their sleep schedules never match up.
I know sleep is important for growing children, but how much sleep do my kids really need?
The timing of this question is absolutely perfect because the new sleep guidelines just came out.
The guidelines were published in Sleep Health.
That's the official journal of the National Sleep Foundation.
And here are the recommendations.
Ages 1 and 2, they should sleep 11 to 14 hours.
Most of the day, they ought to be asleep.
Preschoolers, ages 3 or 5 in that range, 10 to 13 hours.
So less, you can see the trend, by the way, is heading less, but they still need a lot.
Now, school-age kids, up to preteens, that's, let's say, age 6 to 13 or so, they need 9 to 11 hours.
We make a big mistake here because we think these kids can get away with 8 hours.
Not true.
By the time they're teens, although we think they're bats, They still need their sleep.
At age 14 to 17, we want 8 to 10 hours of sleep.
These are the official recommendations.
Now, yes, it's less over time, but not what adults get.
They still need more than us.
This will fluctuate from day to day with each kid, but they're a good gauge of what is normal.
And it's important to notice how the requirement changes as your child gets older so you can change along with them.
Okay, question number three is a flip cam.
It's our last question.
It comes from Atia.
My name is Atiyah and my daughter Jada refuses to eat anything green.
She won't eat broccoli, spinach, celery.
She is living off of pizza and not growing in cheese.
I have tried begging her, pleading with her, even bribing her with dessert.
I'm really concerned that she's not getting the proper nutrients for her age.
What should I do?
So, Tia's joining us.
Are all your kids picky eaters?
No, I have two other children.
My boys are able to eat anything and everything.
It's just my daughter, Jada.
She refuses to eat anything but starch.
My oldest and my youngest, Aftie and Oliver, they'll eat anything like yours.
Pretty much.
The second one's pretty good, but the third one, Zoe, she's a really finicky one.
Sort of like your Jada.
That is Jada.
So a little trick I'm going to share with you that we do is called sneaky cooking.
Sneaky cooking.
Come on over here.
Don't let them know we're coming.
Tia's daughter, Jada, is here along with other picky eaters.
We picked that up from audience members.
Look how they're smiling.
You guys keep eating.
No, don't let me slow you down.
Jada, how's that mac and cheese, by the way, honey?
It's good.
It's good?
Is that a positive response from your daughter, Tia?
Yeah, but she likes mac and cheese.
She does.
Yeah, she does.
What if I told you, Jada, that mac and cheese had cauliflower in it?
Would you still like it?
You're not so sure anymore.
It's too late you ate it.
Kids, the cauliflower is, I think, pretty good with the mac.
Let me keep going on here.
Joseph, what do you think about those brownies?
They look really good.
Have you tasted it yet?
Nope.
Because he's so busy eating the cauliflower, he hasn't gotten to the brownies yet.
None of you have a taste.
Go ahead, take a little bite of the brownies.
Let me see what you guys think about that.
And I want a question for you.
If you don't mind.
Did you enjoy it?
Look how beautiful you're smiling.
Sophia, how yummy is that?
Good.
Good.
Are there any veggies in there, Sophia?
Not sure.
Oh, I love this.
They don't know!
It has spinach in it!
Spinach!
Oh, my gosh.
Joseph tossed it down immediately.
Stunned.
And Jada, of course, is beside herself.
She's shocked.
Yes, she's shocked.
That's how you do it.
We put spinach and blueberries in the brownies, which are fabulous.
I got recipes like this.
You can check them out on drroz.com.
Thank you for doing this with me.
Thank you, Jeff.
All right.

Coming up, suffering from heartburn or acid reflux?
Find out how simple everyday foods and products can put out the fire.
America's top nurses share their best remedies for quick relief.
Natural ways to bust that heartburn.
Coming up next.
Whoever said a doctor's visit isn't fun has obviously never been to the Dr. Oz show.
Is that right?
Make your appointment today.
- Okay, go to dronze.com/tickets and sign up for free tickets.
Take a look at this funny cartoon one of my viewers found online.
There's a doctor there, and he's saying to the jack-o'-lantern, I think I have discovered the cause of your severe heartburn.
Notice the x-ray in the back?
It's a candle.
My best stuff.
I like it.
I think it's funny.
Today, there's help for all of you who have heartburn, just like that jack-o'-lantern.
America's top nurses are sharing their best heartburn busters.
Let's get right to it.
Doctors will often tell you to have an apple a day, but nurses say a banana a day will actually bust your burn.
In fact, all these banana snacks were posted by nurses.
Look, here's one that says it's a banana pudding on the very bottom, and there's another one that says banana burrito.
See the bottom left there?
And then check out the bananas covered in peanut butter.
Nurse Jamie is here.
She says her banana smoothie is the best heartburn buster.
So what is it about banana smoothies that you love?
Well, I like bananas because they taste awesome, but bananas are actually low in acid, and they actually have a natural component that acts as an antacid, which is great for heartburn.
You use it yourself?
I use it myself.
Show me how you do it.
You're yummy.
So you have your trusty oil blender here.
You're gonna add half a cup of ice.
You're gonna add two ripe bananas.
You're gonna add one cup of vanilla yogurt.
You're going to add 2% of two cups of milk.
You're going to add two tablespoons of honey.
You're going to blend it up, and here you go.
It looks like this.
I like the texture here.
Oh, so good.
You know, even if I didn't have heartburn, I'd eat this.
Yeah, it's pretty good.
It's a good idea.
How often do you take it?
Actually, I started doing this because when I was pregnant, I was really sick, had really bad heartburn.
I could barely eat anything, so I started making these smoothies, and I used to drink them all the time.
It was a lifesaver.
But now I have them one or two times a week.
It's great for a busy nurse on the go.
I would definitely.
This is a very, very good idea.
Thank you.
Our next person is a heartburn buster in her purse.
But I bet you many of you right now at home and in the studio have it and don't even know it.
Let me see your purses.
Let's investigate the purses.
Open them up.
Lock them in there.
Let me look in there.
I see popcorn.
All kinds of fun stuff.
Yes.
I see it there.
Let me see her quickly.
You have nothing in your purse.
You have some.
Yes.
What is it?
Hairspray or anti-purse spray?
No.
I found some here, too.
And let me see yours.
Okay.
Mike, this is too big.
Yeah, everything.
Running shoes.
All right, you know what?
I found it in some, not in others, but Nurse Cheryl's here to reveal her favorite heartburn buster.
How are you?
Go ahead and share it to us.
It is...
Hey!
Sugar-free gum!
Gum.
Now, what is it about gum that you like?
Well, what happens, Dr. Oz, is after you eat a big meal...
Your gastric juices are going around and they are churning up, and what happens is you chew the gum, it increases our saliva, and it neutralizes those gastric acids.
Therefore, it helps heartburn.
I love it.
Thank you.
I see a lot of you had the gum in your purse already.
Nurse Anna Marie says herbal tea takes her heartburn away, and her herbal tea is a very interesting color.
Yes.
So how does the tea help?
Well, herbal tea is a great replacement for caffeinated drinks and coffees.
Although we like coffee, sometimes the herbal tea is just a little bit more soothing for insulin digestion.
Show me how you make yours and what are the herbs that you find most valuable?
Okay.
Well, my favorite, favorite ones for the stomach are raw and unfiltered apple cider vinegar.
Then I also love to use ginger because ginger is an anti-inflammatory.
Ginger is wonderful because it moves things along in the stomach and also some turmeric.
Turmeric is also very healing and it has curcumin in it which is responsible for the orange color and right when you put it in the warm water it absorbs all those healing qualities.
Put a little bit of that apple cider vinegar in there.
It actually makes it taste really nice and sweet, the apple cider vinegar.
And let that seep for a little bit.
Let's see the taste here.
It's a combination of three most powerful things you could put in your stomach.
It tastes interestingly good.
I would not have expected that.
It is nice, right?
I know.
You should sell this stuff.
Nurse's concoction.
It works well.
Thank you very much.
Thank you, Dr. Ross.
How long do you keep it for?
Two minutes.
Two minutes you drink.
Two minutes.
All right.
Thank you.
And finally, Nurse Rose is here.
Nurse Rose, what do you use for heartburn?
Well, we have a book.
The use of the book is, if we can see here, is to elevate the head of the bed.
Oh yes.
You can elevate the head of the bed four to six inches.
You can use books under the frame.
You can use books under the mattress or anything to elevate the head of the bed.
And what it does is it allows gravity to help keep the stomach contents where they belong.
In the stomach.
And here's the point.
This is an important issue.
The pillows themselves don't work because you roll off them as soon as you fall asleep.
So you actually have to move the mattress up.
Absolutely.
So no matter what happens, the pillows are elevated.
Absolutely.
I've loved having you guys on.
Thank you very much.
Thank you so much.
We'll be right back.
I want everyone to stop what they're doing right now and look at your hands.
Put it out in front of you like that.
I want you to look at your ring finger, that one right there, the ring finger, and compare it to your index finger.
One question I'm asking, which one is longer?
Yeah, I'm hearing a lot of different things.
There's a reason for that.
It actually differs from us.
So, a new study suggests that men with a short index finger and longer ring finger, like mine, are actually nicer to women.
Researchers found that men with the longer ring fingers, like mine, did I mention that?
Were more likely to listen attentively, smile, laugh, and compromise, and also be compliant, docile, I think, with women.
So ladies, if you like the idea of that, then you better put a ring on it.
Check your men out tonight.
Now it's time for In Case You Missed It.
First, to combat your carb addiction, use fat to fight those carb cravings.
Have one tablespoonful of almond butter about 30 minutes before each carb-heavy meal.
The fat will slow down your digestion, leaving you feeling fuller for longer.
And that's going to tell your brain that you don't need to have the whole bread basket all at once.
It'll help you pace yourself a little bit.
So don't forget that half an hour before mealtime, a little peanut butter.
Next, we had Dancing with the Stars judge Bruno Togiorini.
Look at him dancing.
Oh my goodness, that was wonderful.
Kataragi.
And he helped us rate the newest health trends.
Either they were bravo or they were bravno, if we thought they didn't make sense.
The first celebrity health trend we tackled was Gwyneth Paltrow's vaginal steam spa treatment.
She said it's basically like sitting on a mini throne with an herbal steam that cleanses the uterus also gently and balances female hormone levels.
Unfortunately, our final rating was a bravno.
Here's the deal.
It does stimulate flow, sort of like a facial.
See, I can see the blood engorging those tissues, and it might actually be very satisfying, I get.
But the vagina is a self-cleaning oven, and vaginal steams could mess with the good bacteria that you want in your vagina.
Finally, please be careful of dubious people online that make it seem like I endorse their products because they don't.
