Text
Today on Dr. Oz, legendary broadcaster Regis Philbin.
Why did I come here?
Has something he's got to get off his chest.
Any health issues?
Yes, I do.
I sense a little fire developing inside.
Painful.
The surprise Regis wasn't expecting.
Have you ever seen a real heart?
Looks like a chicken.
And his most important health lessons.
Filling that muscle!
Coming up next on Oz...
Regis Philbin, who I adore, holds the record for more time on television than any other person.
Almost 17,000 hours.
And after logging in all those hours, I bet you think that he has shared everything about his life.
Well, think again, because today Regis is revealing his most important health lessons.
And listen up, because they could save your life.
You want to see Regis Philbin?
Come on out.
Dr. Oz.
Yeah.
I got that.
I adore you.
Thank you.
So good to have you.
Thank you very much.
It's good to see you.
Look at this.
What a beautiful studio.
You don't have enough lights, though.
Yes.
The lights are, they're dawning on.
I saw anything like this in my life.
83 years of success in life.
Well, thank you very much.
And you're as active as ever.
What is your secret?
I guess exercise has helped me over the years.
My wife, Joy.
Yes.
Hi, honey.
Don't forget Joy.
Nervously.
Yeah.
I guess that's it, though, you know?
There's so many things you do.
It's been three years since you stepped down from your show.
Yes.
After almost 30 years of just an incredible broadcaster.
You all agree.
You grew up with y'all.
In fact, 60 years of broadcasting in general.
Yeah.
Do you miss the business?
Yeah, I do, from time to time.
You know, not every time, because after 28 years of doing that and getting up every morning and getting over there and doing that opening especially, but I do miss it from time to time.
Any health issues?
Yes, I do.
I want to talk to you about something.
Lately, this is just lately, I've been...
When I go to bed and I lay down, all of a sudden I sense a little fire developing inside here.
Yeah.
When I say fire, I mean it's painful.
Not intimate kind of fire, but bad kind of fire.
I'm asking for joy.
Dr. Oz is having fun.
I'm telling Dr. Oz about something that really bothers me, and you're having laughs.
No, but there's a painful thing here.
But it's happening every night.
So I take an Alka-Seltzer, something to calm it down.
Does that help it?
Yes, it does.
So one thing you ought to do is take two blocks under the headboards of your bed.
This is a serious answer.
Okay.
Just to lift your head more just a bit.
It prevents the acid that might be in your stomach because you like to eat out.
Yeah.
It'll be the dinner before, which I want you to keep doing because being connected is an important part of growing old gracefully and strongly and staying connected as you already are.
Okay.
But you want to make sure that that acid is not bathing your esophagus.
How's your sleep in general?
Pretty good.
Pretty good.
Some nights, you know, you just can't.
Why?
You can't fall asleep.
You fall right to sleep?
Always.
You know what the biggest issue is?
I gotta say, the bedroom should be reserved for sleep and sex.
No TV, is that right?
No newspapers, no nothing.
Look at all these women.
Yeah.
Look at all this.
Soon as you said, said sex.
What kind of a crowd is this?
They're engaged.
Speaking of sex, Joy, you mentioned her earlier.
Dr. Oz, no joy?
44 years of marriage.
Yeah.
And how has she allowed you to be the person you are now?
You know, she is dominating me.
Good for her.
She has won.
She has won.
Won the battle there.
And I just listen to her and admire her and thank you, Joy, for my life.
So, 2007. Oh, yeah.
A man who was a picture of health for so many of us.
He did life-saving heart surgery.
Actually done it at my hospital, New York Presbyterian.
That's right.
You know, I put myself in Dave Letterman's hands because he had had it done five years before that.
And so he, oh, you can't do anything.
Let me handle it for you.
I'll get the doctors.
He picked out the room, the hospital room.
Perfect.
He did it all, really.
And then the night before, listen to this, the night before the operation, I couldn't sleep.
I was very, very nervous about it.
It was a Monday night, and so I tuned him in.
And he said, well, Regis has no idea what he's going to get into tomorrow.
After getting me all set up with this thing, he says he's going to get up and around.
He has to be in this car at 6 o'clock.
They're going to take him to the hospital.
They're going to strip off his clothes, put him in a gurney, wheel him into the operating room, and bust him open like a lobster!
I love it.
That's what he said.
I love it.
Who can sleep after that?
No.
You can't sleep?
Like a lobster.
Like a lobster.
Let's show everybody what we find when we open you up like a lobster.
Okay.
Have you ever seen a real heart?
No, I don't think I have.
May I show you one?
Yes, I'd love to see.
Come on over.
He's being polite.
No, no.
You mean a heart that's by itself?
A heart's by itself.
Not the usual way you see it.
Here you go.
What are these, gloves?
These are purple gloves.
I purposely picked them out for you.
Because I'll keep your hands clean.
So this...
Looks like a chicken.
Are you hungry?
Are you hungry?
Is that a heart?
It's a heart.
Boy, it's bigger than I thought.
Well, that's a normal heart.
You want me to show you a heart that's not normal?
Okay.
You mean my heart looks like that?
No, yours doesn't because we got to you before you had damage to your heart.
Okay.
The reason I even started doing this show, because I'm a heart surgeon, as you know, is to make sure that I didn't have to do this to people because they never got to this stage.
They were like this.
This heart doesn't need bypass surgery.
This heart won't have any symptoms.
I had bypass surgery then, right?
I needed it.
You needed it.
Because my heart was looking like this?
Your heart was going to go from this to this.
Why did I come here?
I thought we'd have fun with Dr. Oz.
We went out.
We used to have dinner together.
All right, come over here.
I'll show you some fun.
Let me show you what a bypass is because this you'll enjoy.
This is really something.
Can I hold it one more time?
Please, please.
This is a functioning, working heart.
Yes, the real thing.
And all of you people have.
And me too.
Yep, all of us.
You're the only one that doesn't know.
I'm the heartless one.
All right, speaking of heartless, you can keep your gloves on.
I built you a heart here.
Regis, only for you, color-coordinated for you.
Let me just explain this for a second.
Yeah.
So, these little blood vessels supply the muscle.
Remember that muscle you were just holding?
Right.
Sometimes those blood vessels get blocked off.
For example, notice this tube going down has a yellow-yellow plaque here.
But that's an artery, right?
That's an artery.
Yeah.
The arteries give life-nourishing blood to the muscles so the muscles can squeeze.
Okay.
So what we've got to do is do a bypass graft.
I'm gonna show you exactly what you had done.
And you're gonna assist me.
Okay.
There?
Alright, first, we need a vein.
There's your vein.
My vein.
Yeah, where do they get the veins from in you?
Wow, is this a real vein?
No, no.
That's plastic tubing.
Your vein is a little blue little thing.
It comes out of your leg probably.
Remember the little scar you had in your legs?
Yeah.
We took a little vein.
We needed a tube.
Okay.
So then you feel the aorta, the big tube coming out of the heart.
So feel this aorta.
Yeah.
We take a knife.
I'll make the cut.
You're cutting into the aorta.
You stop the heart.
You make a cut like this, and then you put the end of the vein in there.
Push it in there.
Nicely done.
Now, the other half of the vein, you take and you put it into the hole that you make in the artery, downstream from where the blockage is.
And then, you restart the heart and blood starts going through this.
Oh, there it goes!
Through there, past the bypass, and perfect.
In other words, you're avoiding this, this is blocking it, so that's out.
You put a new one in, beyond the blockage.
Beyond the blockage.
And if it leaks a little bit, you put an extra stitch there to close it.
And that's my past scrap.
That's the life-saving operation.
Is that what happened to me?
You had this operation.
Wow.
I didn't know that.
So how complete was your recovery?
How complete?
Well, I spent a week in the hospital, and every day I would walk, get out of my bed, you know, and walk around the whole floor.
And people would get out of their bed.
People who never moved would get out of their beds.
Regis is coming.
Thank you.
And I felt like Frankenstein.
I'm walking like this and then looking out the door.
It was very embarrassing.
So can I embarrass you one more time?
What is it now?
This is a picture.
No, what is it now?
This is a picture from the 80s.
This is Regis working out.
Look at this picture.
Now, you've been incredibly fit.
You've always been fit.
Yes.
So I want you to share with us a secret.
Just give us one exercise.
I'll waltz over here with you that you do every day that you think allows you to stay fit like that.
Yes.
Yes.
Show me.
Coach.
First of all, one day I had a real bad shoulder and I ran into a doctor out on the Hamptons, it was summertime, and he said, look, you just get some light weights and you do this.
All right.
30 reps.
Like this?
Two cents, yeah.
Well, you see, I don't use the five pounds.
If you need to use five pounds, go ahead.
We just use this detective.
All right.
Building that muscle.
You can use cans, soups, anything.
Anything you've got, sure.
Just use it.
But do it for 30 reps.
And that works for you, huh?
And then...
Oh, I like that.
I like that.
Help!
All right.
In all seriousness, give us...
And I do treasure you so much.
Give us the biggest insight you've gotten in 83 years of living.
Well, when I was in the Navy, you know...
I'll keep holding mine.
When I was in the service, I lived in a BOQ when the ships were in, and the war was over, and so I was packing up and going home, and this Marine major that I met, I liked a lot, Kyga LaFlake, another guy named Bill Rankin, anyway, they came in to see me to say goodbye, and he said to me, so what are you going to do with the rest of your life?
And I said, well, you know, Major, I see television now.
I thought maybe I could do that, but I really, I have no experience.
I have no talent.
I have never been on a stage in high school or college.
I never thought because I didn't think I could do it.
And this guy was tough.
He was, you know, a battlefield commissioner on Guadalcanal the year, but the war before.
He looked me and got real close to me and he said, don't you know you're going to have anything you want in this life?
You've only got to want it bad enough.
Now, do you want it?
And I said, Major, you don't understand.
I have nothing to...
I said!
Do you want it?
He was a very tough guy.
Yeah, I could tell.
I got a little shaky, you know what I mean?
I clicked my heels.
Gave him a salute, said, Yes, sir!
I want it!
First time I ever said that to anybody, including myself.
I'm going to go get it.
Get in the car, go up to Hollywood.
This is in San Diego.
And make it happen.
And that was the beginning of it.
Great story.
Love you, Regis.
Love you, too.
Thank you so much.
You can find Regis' top five health lessons at DrRise.com, and we will be right back.
Coming up, unexplained excessive hair loss can be worrisome and scary.
Taking an emotional toll and making you feel helpless.
It may be your health that's causing the issue.
The plan for everyone struggling with thinning hair and hair loss.
Next.
Stressed out?
Let the Zen master in.
The foolproof guide to busting stress.
Five small things anyone can do to create calm and chaos.
All new Dr. Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Pinning hair and hair loss is the medical condition I hear about the most from women.
And when it starts to thin and fall out, panic sets in.
And it can take an emotional toll.
That's what Shawn is going through.
I know a lot of you can relate.
My name is Shawn, 35 years old.
I feel so much older because I'm losing my hair.
I have incredibly thin parts.
I have bald patches in the back.
No matter where I put that part, I have the hair horizon.
Ten years ago or so, I had much thicker hair.
I felt more confident going out with my friends.
When I look in the mirror, I see more scalp every time.
When I brush my hair, I see clumps of my hair.
I freak out quite a bit.
I wonder how I am going to cover these bald spots in the back of my head.
For a living, I am a pub trivia host.
Welcome to Team Trivia.
So I'm in front of a lot of people at a time.
I'm gonna go ahead and play a song.
I do feel more confident when I'm wearing a hat, when I'm hiding my hair.
Inside I do feel very insecure.
If I take off my hat while I'm there, are they gonna think I'm sick?
Are they gonna think something's wrong with me?
This is my buffet of hair loss camouflage.
I have 50-some odd baseball caps.
I would never really go out without a hat or something to cover my hair up with.
From start to finish, it takes me a good 45 minutes to style my hair in the morning.
This is my collection of volumizing shampoos, conditioners, dry shampoos.
Pretty much anything you can put in your hair, I've put in my hair.
I wonder a lot what I've done that's caused my hair to fall out so early in my life.
I can't even make the hat work on my head right now.
I kind of want to cry.
It really hurts me emotionally to see my hair just falling out.
Thanks for being here, Shawn.
So how does the hair loss affect you emotionally?
My mom had this gorgeous, thick, full hair.
I'm sorry, I'm already crying.
I lost her in 1997. Sorry.
So now every time I see these clumps of hair, I've got these bald patches and I'm like, it's just another way I'm disconnected.
I'm disconnected from her.
To the point where I won't go out with my friends without wearing a hat.
I won't be in pictures.
What kind of person doesn't want to be in pictures with their friends?
What kind of person goes out and says, you know what?
I have to hide myself from here instead of being out there and being in it with all my friends.
Does it make you feel helpless?
I feel like there's nothing I can do anymore.
I've put so many different things in my hair.
I'm ready to give up.
I'm just ready to give up.
I want to go home and cry and never leave my house.
Ever.
I don't want any of those things to be true for you.
I'm going to change all that today.
Okay.
I've got to start by putting you in the truth tube because I want to show you some numbers.
Okay.
I don't want you to see this as a fearful experience.
I want you to see this uplifting because it's going to give you control back.
Okay.
What we fear most really is what we don't understand.
Okay.
So I'm going to give you that today.
Let's take care of it.
We did a battery of tests.
Okay.
Stand right there.
That way you'll be able to see your numbers.
So let me first give you the good news.
Okay.
These are the numbers that we checked that actually I was surprised were so good.
You're not anemic.
Okay.
You're not low on iron.
Okay.
You're not low on selenium.
Okay.
These are the things we look for first.
Okay.
But there were some numbers that weren't good.
Okay.
And if it's okay, I'm going to share those with you.
Let's do it.
All right.
So the first thing we looked at were your hormone levels, which really should be the first place you looked with hair issues.
Okay.
And they were abnormal, significantly abnormal, and they point to problems with your thyroid.
Okay.
And it's not working well.
Second thing we looked at was the amount of inflammation in your body.
Okay.
Your inflammation numbers were, again, very, very high.
Okay.
Your glucose.
All right.
It's a sign of diabetes or pre-diabetes.
Your numbers were not in the diabetes range, but they weren't normal either.
So we put you sort of in the pre-diabetes range.
An area where I think we can make improvement.
We can work with that.
And finally, I'm going to point out something that everyone right now can start addressing, and you will also.
It's vitamin D. Your levels were low.
They weren't just low.
They were really low.
In fact, you want your vitamin D level to be at least 30. That's like the minimum.
30?
Okay.
Your number was one of the lowest we've had on the show.
It was 13. I don't even know how to process that.
Well, let me put it in this way, because I'm going to go through these numbers with you very slowly and very carefully.
But you came here for answers today.
Yeah.
I just gave you a bunch of answers.
And I have no idea how to process them.
That's why you're here.
That's why everyone's here because you're not alone.
I'm going to take you through this and you're going to feel when you're done that all these are addressable.
Every single one of them.
Hair loss is a fixable problem if you know what to aim at.
So what we're going to do today Is get you involved with a program that's going to allow you one by one to change those numbers.
I don't want you to run into beauticians or more hair products anymore.
I want you to run into doctors.
That's a message for all of us.
Can you hear me with it?
Let's do it.
Alright, I've got this right person to introduce you to.
We're going to go through the whole thing, how to deal with inflammation, and get everyone confident that we can work to grow our hair back.
When we come back, I plan for everybody struggling with thinning hair and hair loss.
Stay here.
Have you had to deal with hair loss?
Tell us what you did.
I've tried over-the-counter options, but nothing worked.
So I embraced it and busted out the razor.
Now that I've shaved it off, my wife loves my hair.
Share your story on Facebook.com slash Dr. Oz.
Coming up, is losing your hair causing you to lose your mind?
Don't let the stress go to your head.
Your health could be the root of the problem.
Learn the steps to treating it and regaining your confidence.
The plan to reverse hair loss and regrow your hair.
Next.
Today we have the plan to reverse hair loss and regrow your hair.
Shawn is only 35, but she has developed bald spots and her hair comes out in large clumps.
So I wanted to find a doctor that will work not just on treating hair loss issues, but the underlying medical imbalances that cause it.
That's really why you're here, to see this as a symptom of a bigger issue.
Dr. Elizabeth Bohm is joining us.
She's a functional medicine physician who works with Dr. Mark Hyman at the Ultra Wellness Center.
So we just saw, Dr. Bohm, that Shawn has some significant imbalances.
We went through her hormone levels, her inflammation numbers, her glucose, vitamin D. These all sort of fit together.
How common is it for women who have hair loss, almost half the population, to have one or more of these problems?
You know, it's so common.
I see this all the time in my practice.
And you know, Shawn, as a woman, I really relate to you guys.
I know how important the way my hair looks means to how I feel about myself.
And women come in all the time to my practice saying, I'm losing hair, what can I do?
And this is really important that you came and had this blood work done because we found so many things we can work on that's going to help your hair look better.
Walk me through the thyroid.
So what should Sean be doing?
Yeah, you know, I think, Sean, we've got to start there because we saw some major imbalances in your thyroid.
Many things we can do in terms of diet and lifestyle for the thyroid, but your TSH was a little out of range, so much out of range that I think we want to also add in some medication to help your thyroid, okay?
Simple to take, very safe to take, not expensive to take.
Okay, second big issue was the amount of inflammation in the blood sugar.
You mentioned those as well, these sort of middle two items.
What do we do there?
Absolutely.
So, you know, we know food is medicine, right?
And we're always thinking about a low glycemic diet to help with diabetes and to help with our blood sugar balance and to help prevent heart disease.
But what we often don't realize is that when we manage our blood sugar and go on a low glycemic diet that we're going to talk about, then all of our hormones in our body rebalance themselves.
And then we get hair regrowth.
Okay.
And if we work with a good diet, we can get that under better balance.
Show me what you're talking about with a low-glycemic diet for hair loss.
We've got a little demonstration here.
Go ahead.
The first thing we're going to do, I guess, is change what the foods that we're putting in our body.
Absolutely.
We've got to work to lower inflammation in the body because inflammation comes with a specific diet.
And we saw your inflammatory markers were kind of high.
We're definitely high.
And so we've got to work to lower that inflammation, okay?
So the first thing is we're going to be taking out foods that are high in inflammation.
The simple carbs.
The ones you like, I know.
I love noodles.
Well, you do love your hair more than noodles is the question.
I definitely want more hair than noodles.
We can deal with that.
The sugar and alcohol.
They're simple carbohydrates too.
They spike that blood sugar up.
We're going to pull those out of the diet.
Dairy is an inflammatory food for a lot of people, so we're going to pull that out.
We're going to rebuild you with foods that actually help the hair.
They include fiber.
Absolutely.
We can help with balancing your blood sugar by giving you the right foods.
A diet that's high in fiber.
In addition, we want to give you good healthy fats.
Things like they're found in salmon and avocado.
They're good for our hair.
And the other thing that fat and protein does is it slows the digestion and absorption of your food.
So you want to have some protein and fat at every meal so your blood sugar doesn't increase as quickly with your food.
So it's really important to balance your protein, your fats, and your high-fiber foods each meal of your day.
So, except for the noodles, the rest seems pretty easy for you.
Yeah, I can go with that.
The next thing you want to do is increase your daily dose of two important vitamins.
Okay.
One is biotin, which is a building block for your hair, and the other one is vitamin D that I mentioned over there.
Okay.
So, please walk us through how these vitamins are important for hair growth.
Absolutely.
So, biotin is really the hair vitamin.
It's great for building strong hair.
And, you know, you can get enough biotin with two eggs a day.
And, in addition, these eggs are going to help also with balancing your blood sugar.
Okay.
So, they're a great thing to add in.
I can do eggs?
Yeah.
And vitamin D, again, you could get it from the sun.
But in America, we just don't do that, especially in the winter months.
So you're going to take a thousand units of vitamin D. We're going to start with that.
It's a pretty good chance we might need a little bit more.
Okay.
And the last big issue, and I have no idea why we don't do this more, with so many people suffering from hair loss, is minoxidil drops daily.
Dr. Bohm, why is this forgotten and why is it so valuable?
Well, you know, it's over-the-counter.
It's easy to use.
You can apply it to your hair a couple times a day, and it helps right at the hair follicle with hair regrowth.
So while we're looking to get to these underlying root issues with the hair loss, while we're working to rebalance things in your body, we can be using the minoxidil, and that can be really helpful.
Okay.
Yeah.
We can do that.
Sean, we gave you some answers today.
Yes.
Dr. Boehm has agreed kindly to make you her patient.
So she's going to help you.
I might need that point.
Thank you so much.
All I want to know is now that you have a bit more of an understanding and hopefully a little less helpless in this approach, do you still feel like hiding?
It's going to take a little bit to get there so I can start throwing out those baseball caps.
But I actually kind of feel good about this.
I feel pretty good about this.
All right.
So we're going to follow your story.
We'll be with you.
You can all follow Sean's story as well for the entire plan to reverse hair loss and regrow your hair.

Coming up next, Are your blood sugar levels too high?
You could be putting yourself at risk for diabetes.
Learn how to stop it before it starts.
Four easy steps to add to your routine to lower your glucose.
Coming up next.
Stressed out?
Let the Zen master in.
The foolproof guide to busting stress.
Five small things anyone can do to create calm in chaos.
All new Dr. Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow. - One in four Americans over the age of 20 has high blood sugar, putting them at risk for diabetes.
But guess what?
You have the power to stop it before it starts.
Today I'm giving you the easiest plan ever to keep your blood sugar low.
I'm talking about easy.
There's a cheat sheet that comes along with this.
You're going to start first thing in the morning and it takes you through the entire day.
Simple steps everyone can follow.
Esther's with us.
She's a mom of three kids with a busy lifestyle.
So what kind of change are you looking for?
I'm looking for healthier food choices for myself, for my children, my husband.
We take turns cooking, so it needs to be easy and it needs to be where I can balance my blood sugar.
And how about the kids?
Do they have to like the food or you don't care?
Yeah, they have to like to.
I thought so.
Come over here.
All right, four steps.
They're so easy.
You can make them part of your routine.
Give me two weeks on this program.
Just two weeks.
Okay.
And again, because they're simple, you'll be able to do it effortlessly.
After two weeks, it becomes part of your routine.
Okay.
And your kids won't even know what's stuck up on them.
They're going to be applauding you for all the things you've done to make them healthy.
Okay.
What about my husband?
Will he know?
Your husband will know, yes, but he's going to come along for the ride because, after all, usually the woman is the chief family officer of the home.
So they don't have a lot of choice anyway, the guys, myself included.
But actually, he's going to like these as well.
Most importantly, you're going to like them because if you don't like them, you're not going to do it.
Okay, blood sugar.
To get it down, you've got to start first thing in the morning.
So you're going to automate your breakfast in the morning with steel-cut oatmeal.
Everyone knows I love steel-cut oatmeal, but let me explain one of the reasons I love steel-cut oatmeal.
It's because it's soluble fiber.
And so it's simple to make.
It takes about 15 minutes, but you don't have to make it in the morning.
You can make it the night before.
Frankly, make it a couple days before.
It stores forever.
You know, literally three or four days without difficulty in the fridge.
Your body digests it very slowly, so your blood sugar is going to stay low.
And by keeping your insulin levels where they need to be, your blood sugar is dancing through the day merrily with you and your red lipstick going like this, like this.
Salsa.
How do you eat with salsa?
Okay.
Well, salsa's in back.
Okay.
That's right.
So, the number one thing, start up in the morning with zucca oatmeal.
Okay.
Number two issue has to do with your lunch.
Now, a lot of things you can do for lunch, but you're going to include non-starchy vegetables.
Okay.
So, you get all the greens count.
You know, I have some broccoli, some green beans.
These are all high in fiber and they're low in carbohydrates.
The starchy vegetables oftentimes grow under the ground.
They have to store their energy there.
So there's a lot of stuff that becomes sugar in your body.
So you don't want those carbohydrates driving up your blood sugar levels.
So be careful about the potatoes and the peas and things like that.
How often can I eat this throughout the day?
Well, you can eat as much as you want.
I want to get out of this girdle.
I want to get out of this girdle.
So I'm going to eat that all day.
That's a side benefit.
That's fine.
Now, your kids and your husband may not be happy having it all day.
But for lunch, you're with whoever you need to be with.
So make this part of every single lunch.
Pick it half your plate.
Okay.
Sweeteners.
What do you like to use?
I use sugar in my tea.
I use about two tablespoons of sugar with my tea.
I like it sweet.
You like it sweet.
Yes.
Yes, I gather that.
So here's the thing with sugar.
The right amount of sugar is not really an issue for me, but sugar doesn't have a nutritional benefit.
And if you're trying to deal with blood sugar issues, which again, one in four of us have to worry about, so there's a pretty good chance that your husband's going to have an issue as well as you, you want to be thoughtful about what you add to your tea or your coffee.
Cinnamon is an incredibly powerful replacement for sugar.
And the thing about cinnamon is it actually helps your body regulate its blood sugar by helping your insulin work better.
So I put a little bit in here already, but you take just a tiny little bit, less than you would need with regard to sugar, add it to your coffee, and when you mix it up, you'll actually find that it's a satisfactory replacement.
It has a different flavor to it, but it's something that I think will grow on you pretty quickly.
You like cinnamon at all?
Yes, I do.
That's one of my favorite spices.
So I could cut down on the sugar and just use half of the cinnamon.
You can use a quarter of the cinnamon, actually, or you can combine it and do it to taste.
But use the cinnamon as an ally to push back on the sugar.
Independent of the sweetener benefit, it helps with the insulin, which is really the goal today.
Okay.
I'm giving you simple little steps that I know will work.
These aren't guessworks.
There's been a lot of work done on cinnamon, but you've got to put it in your diet or it can't help you.
Okay.
At this point, just add it to the sugar if you have to.
All right, last issue has to do with meat.
Mm-hmm.
You eat a lot of meat?
I do.
Are you in your family?
Mm-hmm.
Like every meal, kind of meat eaters?
Just about every meal.
All right.
So two days a week.
Just for these first two weeks to get you going, two days a week, I don't want you eating meat.
Okay.
And I'm going to give you lots of recipes that you can replace the meat with.
But the research over and over again shows that people who are vegetarians tend to have a lower risk of getting type 2 diabetes than people who are meat eaters.
Okay.
So part of it's the meat, part of it is what goes along with the meat.
But here I made you two examples of things you can have.
It's a black bean burger, which I think is to die for, and the chili, which I would love for you to try because I had it for my little snack today.
You will enjoy eating these.
Now remember, these are easy cheats you can incorporate into your day.
They're all on DrRoz.com.

Next, it was a race against time to find a willing donor.
For this dad, the internet and a simple photo produced a miracle.

Just take a look at this photo.
Just 24 hours after it was posted online, it went viral and got millions of views in a desperate attempt to save this father's life.
Then, through the power of social media, a miracle happened.
It's an incredible story that I really want to share with you.
Give me your big princess smile.
They say that pictures are worth a thousand words, but this one was worth a lot more than that.
It saved my husband's life.
You can't put a price on that.
I knew Raleigh was suffering with diabetes and high blood pressure.
I've been losing function on my kidney for at least 10 years.
You know, I felt like I was gonna be leaving her and I didn't want to leave her.
My mom said he needed to go to the hospital.
He needed to get a new kidney.
I knew that his kidney function was declining, but I did not realize that it had gotten this bad until I received a fax that said stage 5, which is end-stage renal failure.
I began researching and asking questions and anything that we could do speed up the process of finding a donor.
Finding a donor can take up to 45 years or longer, and I just knew I didn't have that kind of time.
I was worried.
I was just hoping and just praying.
We actually say a special prayer, the same prayer each night.
We pray that, please keep Daddy well until he gets his new kidney.
My wife, she contacted her friend and they came up with this brilliant idea to have the girls take photos of holding signs saying my dad needs a kidney.
Once they posted, we just started getting response.
Thousands of respondents.
People who we've never seen or met, it was being shared in places that were so far disconnected from us and it blew up.
Within four days, it had reached seven million people.
But one really caught my eye and I was in tears probably before I finished the first sentence of his email.
And it would be his honor to donate his kidney to me.
His name was Chris Carroll, and he's from a small town in Texas, out of Texas.
I came across the story of Raleigh and the girls holding up the sign, my dad needs a kidney, and it just hit me.
It felt like my own dad, if my own dad had needed a kidney, that's how strongly I felt about this.
Chris had said from the very beginning that anything that he could possibly do, he would do.
From taking time off of away from work to driving 13 hours, there wasn't anything he could have done that he didn't do.
When I was in the waiting room, it was one of the most stressful times of my life.
They wheeled him away and I did not see him for five hours.
A lot of waiting and hoping that the next call we get is going to be a good one.
When we got the news that Raleigh's surgery was complete and that he had a fully functioning kidney, I just cried and I knew that our blessing was here.
I knew this was what was supposed to happen.
I knew I was the one that was supposed to give the kidney to Raleigh and I knew it was going to work out.
Here's a man that is willing to save Raleigh's life.
I mean, he's a phenomenal human being.
This was a great reminder that people love each other, people do care about each other, and are willing to do practically anything to help.
I mean, I consider Raleigh my brother.
He told me that he considered me as his brother.
So, I mean, what do you say to them?
Can't thank them enough.
Raleigh and his wife Christy are here.
That is an incredible story.
Yes.
Yes.
I saw you getting very emotional watching it, which is exactly how all of us feel.
We didn't live it the way you did.
Christy.
I can't explain the way that we feel with everything that's happened.
Very blessed.
How you doing, Raleigh?
I'm doing great.
I'm doing great.
It's just been a blessing.
I'll be able to just...
Just feel, I feel healthy, stronger, stronger, a lot more energy from what I felt last month, a month ago.
Now, you've not seen Chris, the donor, since the transplant.
Is that right?
You all want to meet him, everybody?
Chris, come on out.
Please join us.
It's such a pleasure to meet you.
You know what's remarkable to me is you heard an opportunity where you could actually save someone's life.
You didn't hesitate for a moment.
You've been called appropriately, I think, a hero, a miracle worker.
What do you have to say to folks who are thinking about doing something similar to what you did?
Sacrificing a bit of themselves to save a life.
Well, the short answer I would say is they should do it.
They should go for it.
Seeing what it's done to Raleigh and what it's done for his family, it's been so inspirational for me.
And I feel like I've been blessed as much as they've been blessed by this.
Chris, let me turn it to you and Raleigh.
What do you guys have to say to Chris?
Well, it's just I'm speechless.
The words can't really explain what I feel.
I just want to say, Chris, I just want to thank you for giving me the opportunity.
Tip and a blessing to be able to keep going with my family and my daughters.
It's just been a miracle.
And thank you so much.
You're certainly very welcome, Raleigh.
It's been such a blessing getting to know these and their family.
We consider them family now as well.
Absolutely.
Raleigh is my brother.
I mean that.
Christy and the rest of the family, they're wonderful people.
It's been an amazing experience.
You build families by giving people things that you care about and love.
That's what you do for family as well.
Christy, go ahead.
I would like to thank you.
For saving my husband and our girl's father.
And he would be on dialysis right now, rather than where we sit, if it were not for you.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
Let's speak about this a little bit, because the social media part of this is unbelievable, and we all know it's power, but it's the power of human compassion that you have demonstrated here on the show today.
The ability to look beyond ourselves and care for someone else, and to make a difference in their lives, that's profound, and I applaud you all for that.
If I can speak to the audience, these days we are living our lives on social media.
We talk about it on this show all the time.
Sometimes we overshare, we post things we regret, we don't deal with it the right way.
This story today is a prime example of how social media can be a vehicle of hope.
And it is up to each of us to determine how we can use this incredible tool.
The power is literally in the palm of our hands.
So let's use it.
We'll be right back.
Do you have a social media success story?
Share it with us.
Absolutely.
A friend of mine was in desperate need of a lung transplant due to cystic fibrosis.
After two years, she found a match via a Facebook friend.

I'm always looking for new, natural, and affordable ways to improve your health.
And today, I am really cutting loose.
Literally.
This essence is free.
This aromatic essence is unique.
It's special.
You can make it on the go.
It's perfect if you want some time by yourself.
I'm talking about flatulence.
You think I'm joking.
A new breakthrough study reveal.
Should I open this?
It's too late.
Too late.
I already started.
This breakthrough study reveals...
That this gas may actually be good for your health.
It's a potential...
Woo!
Woo!
Potential health care hero, it's hydrogen sulfide, which is the key gas in flatulence that makes it smell.
Even in small doses, it can help prevent diabetes, stroke, heart attacks, high blood pressure, even dementia.
And you think I'm kidding, but they actually did a study on this.
I have no idea where they got the idea from.
But the next time you have a silent but deadly one, take a big whiff, it could be good for you.
I always talk about stuff.
Honest to goodness is important.
Now it's time for in case you missed it.
First, we talked about how surgeons like me fix your clogged arteries to bypass surgery.
Regis was joining us, and he had this operation.
So you've got a plaque here blocking these arteries from bringing blood to your heart.
And when that plaque is there, you make a little cut downstream from it and take a tube, like a vein from your leg, another part of your body, and you hook it to the blockage above.
The area.
So now you have the big aorta, the big two, pumping blood gently downstream to fill all the blood vessels that otherwise would have been blocked off.
And instead of having a heart attack, you have your life saved by one of these bypass grafts.
So if you want to avoid having this done, this is life-same.
If you want to avoid it, then make fitness part of your routine like Regis has.
Then we learned about how to reverse hair loss and regrow your hair.
It's a very emotional topic for a lot of folks.
People feel like they've forgotten, they have to hide, and they feel ashamed about something they shouldn't be ashamed about.
Now, a lot of you see your hairdresser about this when your hair starts thinning, but instead you see consulting a doctor because hair loss is actually a symptom of something else going on inside your body oftentimes.
So if your hair is thinning, I want you to get your daily dose of two nutrients.
The first is biotin, which you can get just from having an egg or two a day.
Just take it in your breakfast.
And vitamin D, you want specifically at least a thousand units of vitamin D, but you might need even more.
And next, I gave you the easiest plan ever to lower your glucose levels.
All you've got to do is take a pinch Of cinnamon and add it to your tea or to your coffee in place of sugar.
I gave you a lot of ideas as well, but this is simple because it sweetens your tasty little cup, but you don't have to add any sugar to it.
And finally, let me close with a warning.
Please be careful about what you buy online, especially weight loss pills.
Dubious people online make it seem like I'm endorsing their products.
