Time Text
I could feel my vision just started to close in.
Savannah Guthrie.
It started to get black.
On the accident that almost took her sight.
Now I'm starting to lose my vision altogether.
At your darkest moment, were you fearful about your career?
I was scared.
And how she's coping today?
I haven't really talked about it.
I'd like to see normally again.
I'm not there yet.
Plus, it's our System 20 success secrets revealed.
Coming up next.
Are you ready for season 11?
Welcome everybody.
It was the morning that left America wondering and worrying.
What happened to Savannah Guthrie?
She was missing from the desk of the Today Show after a horrifying accident that nearly changed her life forever.
Her eye was severely injured, her vision was in jeopardy, and the worst was yet to come.
Her world went dark.
Today, Savannah is here opening up about her terrifying vision scare, intense surgery, and lengthy recovery.
One morning just before Thanksgiving, the beloved Today Show host didn't show up for work.
I'm sure some folks are waking up and going, where is Savannah this morning?
Turns out Savannah's three-year-old son hit her square in the eye with a toy tray.
The impact tore her retina and she temporarily lost vision in her right eye.
But she was able to see again and started a series of laser treatments to repair her retina while still appearing on air.
But then, the moment doctors and Savannah hoped it would never come to, the retina started to detach, and she was told she could lose her sight forever.
Please welcome my good friend, Savannah Guthrie.
*crowd cheers* *crowd cheers* *crowd cheers* *crowd cheers* *crowd cheers* It's the longest one.
You're happy to see you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Hi everybody.
I'm so glad I didn't trip.
That was a long walk.
It is the longest walk in television, I'm told.
It is.
It really is.
It's sort of a stress test for the guests.
If they can walk this far, then they're healthy enough to get interviewed.
Exactly.
Especially with my eyes.
I'm not seeing that great, so I didn't want to trip.
How are you doing, by the way?
Very well.
Thank you.
Yes, I've had this whole ordeal with my eyes, but I can see you.
I can see you.
Y'all look good.
So I'm happy to be on the mend.
Thank you.
So, I love being with you on the Today Show, in part because you're as real behind the scenes as you are, as folks see you now.
We have fun, don't we?
We do have fun.
But when it happened, everyone was stunned, the entire family.
So if you don't mind, walk us back to exactly what happened to cause this really potentially devastating injury.
It's so surprising.
It was just an average afternoon.
One great thing about being at the Today Show is I get home early and I spend time with my kids all afternoon, and my little one, well, at the time he was two, and we were just playing, and he's at that age where he's just kind of testing physics, and so we threw.
That train at me.
I think how I took that picture, it makes the train look really, really huge, but I guess it was about six inches, and it had a very pointy edge.
And it hit my eye, and I mean, I felt it, but it didn't hurt terribly, and I really didn't think anything of it other than, Charlie, you're gonna get time out, you can't throw things.
And that was the end of it.
And then about 24 hours later, I was taking a walk, and I saw some bright flashes in my eye.
Again, I thought, maybe I'm getting a migraine or something.
And an hour after that, I had no vision in my right eye.
I mean, it was blurry.
It wasn't black, but it was blurry.
And when I went to the ophthalmologist, he said, He said, did something hit your eye?
And then I thought, oh yeah, well, Charlie did throw that train.
But it wasn't this horrible, horrible pain, so I didn't, I was surprised.
And at first, they didn't really know it was a detached retina, not to be gross, but this, the Dr. Oz show, but you, so you can talk about blood and stuff, right?
Yes, of course.
So behind the eye, you couldn't see anything.
It looked totally normal, but behind the eye, it had popped a blood vessel, and so the doctors at first couldn't even see what was going on.
It was just all shot up full of blood, and that's why I couldn't see.
What was your biggest fear at that moment?
You know, I honestly didn't.
I was just kind of underreacting.
I thought, well, this will be all right.
It'll clear up.
I just didn't expect it to be much of anything.
And it's really only after time and having gone through and had, I had a bunch of lasers and they were trying to fix it without surgery.
Over time, I started to wonder, well, what's going on here?
Is this really going to get better?
And the very last day before I had the surgery, It was probably my kind of darkest moment.
I'd been living with it three weeks, doing the show, not being able to see out of one eye, and I could feel That my vision just started to close in and it started to get black.
And it was because, you know, you can't live with a retina detachment for three weeks and not expect to start really losing your vision.
And I was scared.
That was the first time I was really scared.
And I called the surgeon and I said, now I'm starting to lose my vision altogether.
And he said, that's why we're operating tomorrow.
You're okay, but we need to operate.
We need to fix this.
That would panic me.
And I'm a doctor.
Yes, that made me nervous.
Come on up here.
I'm gonna show everyone exactly what's going on.
So this is an image, obviously, of what most of us are familiar seeing the eye.
And they're little muscles, by the way.
That's why you can roll your eyes at your parents, et cetera.
But these muscles aren't the issue, and the eyelashes and eyelids aren't the issue.
The issue is right in here.
And the light goes through this front of the lens.
It has to be refracted on the back of the eye.
Now this is the optic nerve.
And here's the big issue.
When you know more about something, you get even more fearful sometimes.
If the tear is near the optic nerve, that's not fixable sometimes.
That's really problematic.
Thankfully, Savannah, yours was over on the side here.
Which is why I think it became a bit more of a juggling match about what to do.
So you say they lasered it initially.
Initially they lasered it, so I even put a picture on my Instagram that shows you the retina, and it was a massive tear.
And they tried to laser it to avoid the surgery because the surgery is involved.
Actually, if you don't mind, put the picture up because I actually got it.
Oh, you do?
Okay.
I'm gonna show the picture because it's a little startling when you see it.
It is.
Oh yeah, so that's...
Go show it everybody.
Take it away doctor.
Now I know about retina.
Dr. Guthrie.
So your retina is supposed to be all, oh I almost fall.
It's supposed to be all red with nothing.
This is the tear.
See how huge it is?
And then this is like a flap of retina just swinging in the wind.
So that's what it looked like.
And then that's after my surgery.
Isn't that a pretty retina?
I love this.
You can see her lens here.
It is my eye.
I know.
So yeah, so they were trying to avoid the surgery because, I don't know if we want to talk about it, but you do the surgery, which is incredible what they can do, but then the recovery's difficult and you have to spend time with your head in a particular position.
In my case, my head had to be down for about a week.
Well, come and have a seat because I want to talk about the surgery because a lot of A lot of what people struggle with when they're recovering from a problem is it changes their life in ways they didn't expect it.
In the midst of all this, right, before you had the surgery, while you're still struggling to try to repair that little tear we're talking about, and literally your vision is slipping away.
It's barely holding onto the cliff of being able to see.
You're hosting the Thanksgiving Day Parade, you're on national television, acting normal.
And for most of us, mere mortals like me, I'm watching you and thinking, well, she's obviously getting better.
What gave you the strength to keep pushing through this?
You know, I think I just tried to keep it all in perspective, and not that I didn't have my moments, but I thought, it's not cancer, and it's not a sick child.
If something like this had happened to my child, I would be beside myself.
But I do really just try to keep it in perspective, because I can see, I can do my job.
What a relief.
What if I couldn't?
Oh my goodness.
And so, I just try to be grateful, and I am grateful.
God bless you.
Up next, we're gonna go inside the surgery.
Savannah never expected.
And I'm gonna, if it's okay, go back over that moment where the world went black, went dark for you.
Stay with us.
I thought he would further rape me.
Plus...
They were literally cut up surgically.
...a disgraced dentist turned body stature.
He eventually harvested human tissue for millions.
I believe the bad tissue was in my freezer.
That's coming up tomorrow.
We're back with the Today Show, Savannah Guthrie, who's opening up about the terrifying accident that almost took her vision.
So, you have these laser procedures, you're hoping things will work out, and at some point, and this happens in most patients' lives, what they hope doesn't work out.
Yes.
Right, because hope's not a strategy.
No.
You want it to be true, but you got the grim news, news you feared.
What did the doctor say?
Yes, and I've been trying so hard to not like Google my own eye problem.
You know, never go to Dr. Google, right, Dr. Oz?
So I really had tried not to, but I had heard, because it had become public, some horror stories about surgery and the recovery from the surgery.
So when I found out I did need to have the surgery, I was sad.
I just really was, I was just nervous and anxious about what it would be like, especially the recovery.
So my doctor was wonderful.
He did the surgery and he really put me at ease.
He said, it's hard but you can do it and it's not going to be as bad as you think it is.
And it's really interesting what you have to do because you do have to position and put your face in a certain way to make sure the surgery holds.
If you don't do that, there I am with my head down, hugging my little Charlie.
See, I'm not mad at him.
That's right, Charlie.
We're just hanging out there, but what you do after the surgery is as important as the surgery itself.
Let me show everyone what the surgery is, because it'll make it clear why you have to be in that crazy position.
You brought an eyeball.
I brought you an eyeball.
So there's the eyeball, which is a pretty accurate reflection, actually.
And I'm gonna flip this open and demonstrate what the inside of the eye looks like.
Now, the eye, as you pointed out, has this beautiful red covering, which is a very thin layer of cellophane on top of all these blood vessels, because they're taking all the lights that come in from outside of you.
And in the back of the eye, this retina is fragile.
So when Charlie threw that toy, he punctured here and made a little tear.
And that tear began to be pulled away.
And now the retina begins to detach.
So the blood's going through that small tear and pulling away further and further.
When you went blind the night before the procedure, this is probably pulling over enough that you're actually blocking off the ability of light to get where it needs to be.
So, what would allow you to push something into the eye, keep this flat, but go away on its own?
Air.
So doctors put a big air bubble.
It sounds crazy, doesn't it?
We literally blow up your eye like it's a balloon, and we plaster this air bubble in there, and then we close the eye back up again.
So the air bubbles basically hold it, like if you had a poster against the wall and you're like, just stick, just stick.
That's what the bubble's doing.
But the bubble's going to go where the gravity takes it.
So you've got to lean forward so that the bubble goes up to the back of the retina, right?
Keeps pressure on the eye.
But let's go back over some of the issues that you're having.
So even though it looks normal to us, which gives us confidence that it'll get better, you'd actually lost vision in your right eye.
So that retinal tear was dangerous enough that it could have compromised your eye.
Oh, definitely.
And again, I was very, very lucky because, as you pointed out, where the retina tear happened, it was very, very big, but it wasn't near the center of my vision, which I guess is called the macula.
Oh my goodness.
Do I get an A on ophthalmology?
Yes.
Oh, I like this.
Yes, okay.
Dr. Guthrie strikes again.
Yes, so I was really lucky about that, about the location of it.
It was big, but not in the scariest location it could have been.
But your eyesight will change, so my depth perception's off.
When I read, it's almost like I'm reading from a rippled paper.
Oh my goodness.
Yes, and I'm hopeful that that will eventually go away, but I think I have a little work to do in that regard, or the doctors do.
At your darkest moment, were you fearful about your career that you wouldn't be able to read, as you point out, basic documents?
You're one of the most educated people I know in media.
She gets up there and wonderfully articulates the news, but you do it because you actually understand it.
You're a lawyer.
You're kind, thank you.
It's true.
So if you can't read through something that's an affidavit about a person you're about to interview, that could impact you.
Yeah, you know, I did.
Again, I really, really just, I tried really hard to not go there and do the parade of horribles and things that could happen that would be devastating.
But, you know, you just have to take a deep breath and be grateful for what you have.
That, for me, is the bottom line.
And I'm so happy that I was able to do it.
If my eyesight doesn't get any better than this, I'm so lucky.
I can see out of both eyes.
I mean, I know I'm...
Really lucky.
And I have my kids.
You know, I had my kids in my 40s.
I'm so lucky.
I'll never be over it.
I'll never get over it.
So if one of them threw a little train in my eye, well, so be it.
It was worth it.
So the best part of the whole story, my favorite post, wasn't even the macular disruption or the retinal detachment.
It was this out-of-office message that the kids left when mom was home.
Put this up if you don't mind.
Nobody come into my mommy's room.
Yes, that was my little daughter.
That was the day of my surgery.
She put that on my door.
And of course, you know, that sign applies to everyone except for my daughter and son.
Nobody but us can come into mommy's room.
But they kept me company and I had a good time.
It was like forced vacation and reflection.
My family was wonderful.
People at home were so Kind about it.
I'm kind of sheepish and embarrassed about it.
Like, I don't want to make a big thing of it.
It was, you know, a quirky accident that happened.
It's gone on longer than I would have hoped.
I like to just bounce back from things, but honestly, I just feel really grateful.
All right.
Coming up, Savannah opens up about another health journey she's been on, the intermittent fasting craze that everyone's been trying.
Find out her fasting secrets.
It's next.
We're back with "The Today Show," Savannah Guthey.
She's opening up about the health craze that everyone has been buzzing about, intermittent fasting.
So, I've been working a lot on intermittent fasting.
We started talking about it.
I actually ran into you at a vacation spot about six months ago and you confided you were intermittent fasting, which opened my eyes up and I started thinking, no wonder she looks like a gazelle.
Oh please, you're so nice, no.
So, you've been doing it, Carson's been doing it.
What made you want to try it?
Well, first of all, you keep telling us that we need to do intermittent fasting.
It's so good for our health.
And I remember, so this is so funny, every time I see Dr. Oz, I'm like, but can I do this?
Can I? I'm trying to get away with it.
I stopped putting cream in my coffee.
And I actually think the intermittent fasting is really, I don't know if it's...
You know, it's not really about losing weight.
You just kind of feel better.
And so I haven't been eating that great for my seven or eight hours that I do eat.
Like, I still have cookies and cheese and things that you would not approve of.
But I have been doing the fast, and I think it's just working for me.
We made it the foundation of our System 20, as you know, which is the most popular plan we've ever put out for New Year's, in part because of that clear yellow warning line, do this, don't do that.
But most of us mere mortals get up at a reasonable hour, dawn, and so we don't eat our morning, we cancel breakfast, right?
No more breakfast, have brunch instead, you can eat about 11. But you get up at what time?
Mostly four.
Sometimes three, but usually four.
So for you, going that long is not really feasible.
So how do you choreograph your day?
Well, so I used to always eat something before the show.
I felt like I needed to have something in my stomach.
Then I stopped doing that and started just drinking coffee with cream.
But I would eat right after the show.
At 9 o'clock, I was like, I'm starving.
I have to eat.
Now I don't.
I stop eating around 6. I eat with my kids.
And then I try not to eat until 11 or 12. I could go 16, 17 hours.
I haven't eaten since 6 o'clock yesterday.
I feel pretty good right now.
I know!
Crazy, right?
When Savannah walked in there, she eyed my arm longingly.
Yes, exactly.
I'm like, ah!
Is it as easy for Carson, do you think?
He likes it because he knows, like, at 8 o'clock, the window is closed, and I think for some personalities, his is like this, mine is like this.
It's good just to have a bright line rule.
But you know when this, I actually really started doing it in earnest and got serious about it, was when I was having the eye problem because I wasn't allowed to exercise, and it was the holidays, and all these sweets were coming.
So many people sent ice cream and cookies, which was so wonderful, but then I'm in my chair, like, eating.
Eating it.
So it was kind of a way to stay on top of everything and try to not go overboard.
And the fasting really helped me do that.
So I think if you're really good and Dr. Oz is best patient, then you would eat more healthfully during your seven or eight hours that you eat.
And I'm working on that.
But even just doing the fast itself, I think, makes you feel good and you do feel a little more alert.
And you don't miss it.
You can definitely get used to it.
See, I don't actually worry about what you're eating in those seven or eight hours that you're eating.
It's your cheat days that I'm concerned about.
Oh, yeah.
But what are the cheat days?
Like, I don't think I cheat.
I do the fast all the time.
So you don't take one day off a week?
I don't.
No pizza ice cream?
Well, yeah, I do during my window.
Come on over here.
My window of eating?
Yes, I have pizza and ice cream.
What are you talking about?
Of course I do.
So, actually, you can get away with pizza and ice cream, but you have to do it early in your window.
Okay.
So I brought you a little pizza.
Oh, I love it.
It's actually warm, by the way.
Yes?
It is.
I'm bringing this home.
No, I'll share it with you.
I think with the audience.
But the real treat is this, that you can actually have a little alcohol with intermittent fast.
Oh, I love that.
And the best part about the program, I think, is that you don't get lonely.
Yeah.
Which is the single biggest reason people follow up plans, right?
You become asocial because you can't party with your colleagues.
Yes.
We can party.
And I've seen it happen.
I know.
Yes, you have.
Are you comfortable?
No questions about fasting?
You feel good today?
I do.
I feel good.
I mean, I think, I told you, I already did my confession to Dr. Oz.
I think I need to eat a little better in the window in which I eat.
But other than that, I like it.
Take your cheats, eat them early.
The last thing you eat should not be a cheat.
Well, yeah, but I like dessert.
Have your dessert in the middle of lunch.
But meanwhile, I got a little gift for you.
Oh, what?
Because I think when, after Charlie hears about this enough from his sister, he'll figure it out.
These are protective eyewear for you and for Charlie.
I like it.
Are these Charlie's?
His after trucks.
His after trucks and trains.
He'll love it.
Trust in case.
Thank you.
I love having you here.
Thank you for having me.
Pizza for everybody.
Pizza for everybody.
You get one and you get one.
We'll be right back.
Everyone, I mean everybody's talking about System 20, our most popular plan ever.
It is the Whole Body Plan to help you lose 20 pounds and reduce your risk of disease by 20% in 2020. Up next, we're talking to women who lost the weight and they're revealing the tips and tricks they use to succeed on the system so you can too.
System 20. A 20-point checklist to lose 20 pounds.
Reduce your risk of heart disease by 20% all in 2020. The hallmark of the plan, intermittent fasting.
And we're getting rid of breakfast.
You'll break your fast at 11 a.m.
with a meal of beans, greens, and protein.
There's no getting bored on this system because the Dishon Oz crew created recipes that actually taste good and fill you up.
With a full plan, go to DrOz.com slash System20.
Give yourselves a round of applause.
System20 has been the most successful New Year plan we have ever rolled out.
It's the best in online engagement, effective in improving overall well-being, and you're feeling better because of it.
And by the numbers, you're seeing what you want to see, real sustainable weight loss.
And that's because it's not a diet, is it?
It's an entire system that tackles all facets of your health, from the way you eat, to how well you sleep, which is related to how you eat, to how you manage stress, and how you connect with others.
And the best part is, people are seeing results.
They started a month ago, and after a few bumps along the way...
I have missed my deadline for coffee.
They all began to feel better, both physically and mentally.
Thanks to System 20, my daily headaches are gone.
When I turn off my phone an hour before bed, I sleep better.
They created super tasty dishes from greens, beans, and protein.
I now realize it was my poor diet and lack of sleep that was contributing to my bad moods.
I'm less tired and grumpy, and my family actually likes being around me again.
Now I've been on it a month, I feel amazing and my insulin has gone down.
Woohoo!
They started moving, grooving, Meditating, boxing, pushing, pulling, even road tripping together to the Philadelphia Art Museum to run up the rocky steps.
System 20!
Woo!
And all the hard work has paid off.
I lost 10 pounds!
I got into a pair of jeans this morning that I haven't gotten into in quite a while.
System 20 has been such a game changer.
It has pushed me way beyond home limits.
Fantastic.
System 20ers, come on out.
Let's celebrate you.
Oh, my goodness.
You look so great.
Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
I'm so happy for all of you.
Governor Trump, go join us here.
Oh, my goodness.
I give you, I'm so proud of you, I really am.
I see it in your eyes, not just your bodies, your eyes, the energy's different.
Our show contributor Marsha Gavocampo has also been on System 20 for about a month.
She's been the team leader.
What kind of success have you and all these wonderful women experienced?
Oh my god, Dr. Oz, this program has been amazing.
The average loss for the System 20 years is 14 pounds.
Yes!
I lost five pounds in three weeks, which for me is big.
It's hard for me to lose any weight at all.
And you know, what you've really done is you've created a program that is so simple.
It's not always easy, but it's simple.
You've taken all the guesswork out of it, and the key is really the intermittent fasting.
You just set your clock, you know what time you're supposed to eat, and you know what time you're not supposed to eat.
So I wanna introduce you all to another System 20, or Amanda.
And she's a good walking example of what I've been learning.
Amanda started System 20 because she gained 30 pounds while battling thyroid cancer.
She was also found to have high insulin levels, which as you know goes along with diabetes down the road.
For her, it's not just about losing weight, is it?
It's about getting her numbers in check so she can enjoy a long life.
So this is what Amanda looked like before she started the program.
Now, she only started a month ago, but she's already lost 13 pounds.
And it's important, her insulin levels have come down significantly.
So come on out, Amanda.
Hi!
Thank you.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
So I gotta say, you look wonderful.
Thanks.
I thought you looked wonderful before, too.
Thanks.
The part about your story that's so motivating to me is your insulin levels drop.
Yes.
So as a doctor, it just sends me over the moon.
All right, come on over.
So Amanda's System 20 secret has to do with creative ways to eat her beans.
Because on System 20, you get two meals a day, basically, that have greens and beans.
And you need to be able to eat protein, of course, but you need to pull them together.
But you start to get sick of beans.
Yes.
Day in and day out, which I don't blame you.
Right.
So how'd you hack it?
I was able to make a salad dressing on the Facebook group that we have for System 20. Someone inspired me that made a black bean dressing.
So I took the black beans, about a half cup of black beans.
I put them in.
I put the apple cider vinegar, which is so important for one of our components.
It helps you metabolize sugar better.
So apple cider vinegar, what's this?
That is oil.
There's water and there's oil.
Got it.
Yeah.
Put it together, so spice it up.
Yeah, and you spice it up.
And I really like it because it's a lot of beans, so I do like that.
It's delicious.
Did you feel hungry while you were going through all this?
I did not.
And that's the amazing thing about the system.
You're not hungry.
Mara, there are lots of ideas you have as well for hacking beans.
In addition to the dressing, you can actually make a smoothie out of beans, and this does not taste like beans, but it gives you that nice creaminess that you want from your smoothie, and you can even use them in dessert.
You've gotta taste this to believe it.
These are so delicious.
They are black bean brownies.
And again, it's the texture of the beans that saves the day.
They are gooey and delicious, and you're getting your beans in.
You don't find this in medical textbooks.
You find it with people struggling to figure something out to get through life.
If you want another delicious way to incorporate beans, look at this recipe for our System 20 sheet pan squash with chickpeas.
It's so good.
Thank you.
I know what I want for dinner tonight, right?
Angel is here.
She lost 16 pounds after just six weeks on System 20, and she dropped her blood pressure.
Number one cause of aging, dropped it.
Take a look at Angel from before.
There she is, and here she is today.
Come on out, Angel.
Oh my goodness.
Oh, how are you?
How are you?
You do look fabulous.
Oh, thank you.
I'm so sorry, I'm so excited.
I love the energy, forget these guys are so good.
I mean, first of all, you look fantastic.
Thank you, I feel great.
Describe that feel.
I feel light.
I'm not tired anymore.
I have a lot of energy.
I can walk up steps and just not wake up and be tired.
Be the best you.
Live my best life.
Come on over here.
Angel System 20, success secret.
She makes a morning coffee that tastes like dessert.
Now, when I heard this, I thought, well, she probably makes it taste like dessert by adding a lot of sugar or honey and figure something out.
But you actually did it with zero sugar added.
No sugar added.
Because you did something very clever.
Yes.
It wasn't what was in it, it was what you did with it.
Yes.
So one of the components of System 20 is that we have our morning coffee.
And so with the morning coffee, what we do is we add a little MCT oil.
So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna just pour a little coffee here, just a little bit.
And then what we do is we add the MCT oil.
It's supposed to keep us full and give us a little energy boost that we need to kind of carry us over through our fasting period.
Add a little nutmeg.
I'm adding a little cinnamon.
It's almost like pastry in a bowl.
And then along with the MCT oil.
But none of that's gonna make it taste creamy.
No.
But this will.
This right here, this is the secret.
This is the big secret right here is the blender.
So we're gonna turn it on.
And as you can see, when you're blending your coffee, it makes it nice and frothy, almost like one of those fancy coffees you get at one of those coffee places.
You don't need to blend it that long.
You blend it here, and see how it changes the color and made it nice and light and frothy.
I'm about to pour it out.
It actually almost steams a little bit.
It's still nice and hot, right?
Mara, what do you think of the taste?
This is genius, because if you don't blend it, it's a little greasy, and this fixes that completely.
Yes, you no longer get that little greasy pool on the top.
Right?
Delicious.
Yes.
Now you were hypertensive before, is that right?
Yes.
Blood pressure was high enough that you could have been put on medications.
Now your blood pressure is?
Very low.
With all the anxiety coming on the show, it was still low, which for me is a high five because I don't care about the weight, I care about what's going on inside.

You know what?
We're not done yet.
When we come back, find out how a woman who doesn't even cook, doesn't even cook, lost 20 pounds on System 20.
Stay with us.
This is an amazing wellness plan, and here to tell everyone about this plan is the one and only Dr. Ross.
All right, guys.
The benefit of System 20 with 20 steps will reduce the chance of chronic illness, plus you're faster, you're sharper, you're quicker.
and fringe benefit, you'll lose weight.
Can you beat that?
Guys, you all ready for this?
Whoa!
We need to keep that moving.
Let's go! - - So, time be!
That was me having some fun with some System 20 folks, including Mara here, who worked me to the bone.
On social media, you're telling us that System 20 is working.
You're losing weight.
You're lowering your numbers, like your glucose, your cholesterol, your blood pressure.
And best of all, you're sleeping and you're feeling good again.
And we designed System 20 to be a plan you can live with.
So, we give you a cheat day!
Yes!
Everyone cheers.
We give you dessert!
Mmm.
Mmm.
And we give you alcohol.
I feel the same way, but what about those days?
What about those days where you just don't have it in you?
The meal prep or the cook.
How do you survive, Mara?
It's the hardest time.
Everyone's pushed, so no need to worry because we're giving you something else.
Mara, it is?
Fast food.
We've made it work.
That's right.
We're revealing the System 20 secrets to dining out.
You're not cheating.
It's part of the plan.
Carolyn has been on System 20 for five weeks.
She hates to cook, but she still found success with System 20. She lost 20 pounds, and she shrunk her waist size.
So here's what she looked like before she started System 20, and here she is today.
Come on out, Carolyn.
Whoa, whoa, whoa!
Look at that!
You look so great!
Thank you!
You look incredible.
Thank you, I feel incredible.
But I wanna speak about your blood pressure.
So before this all started, we tried to collect numbers, everybody.
Your blood pressure was 136 over 90, which is basically hypertension range, especially for a young woman.
Now, remember, you wanna be under 120 over 80, that's the range.
Now your blood pressure, after six weeks, if I'm correct, it's 110 over 75, which is perfect!
Perfect.
And you didn't do it with medications, right?
No.
Just with food, which is the right way to do it.
So you were nervous about starting System 20 at first.
Why?
I don't cook.
I go out to eat all the time.
So we charged Carolyn with a little System 20 experiment to find a way to fit System 20 into her real way of eating.
And she came back to us with some real fast food meals that work within the System 20 plan.
So come on over.
I'm a little worried.
A little worried, Carolyn.
I'm gonna trust you here.
Walk us through your System 20-approved Mexican takeout food.
Okay, so, well, Dr. Oz, you don't deal with this.
None of the rice?
None of the rice.
That's carbs.
Okay.
They're out.
They're gone.
They're gone.
So, what I do is I grab...
You want to do it?
Some greens.
Let's grab some greens.
Okay, we'll grab some greens.
You talk, I'll serve.
Okay, so we'll do.
You serve, you do the greens, and then we'll do some beans.
We'll add the beans.
I'll add...
So, beans and greens are here.
Beans and greens.
Protein works.
Yep.
And guess what?
It's in.
Cheese is in.
And avocado's in.
And avocado's in.
So it's filling.
It's filling.
It's filling.
What do you think, Mara?
Mara, I didn't forget about you.
This looks so delicious and perfect, because the thing is, you don't want to stop living.
It has to be a lifestyle that you can do forever, and we love to eat out, so this is really, really good to have a system like this.
All right, so I sort of predicted this hack.
What I didn't predict was this next one.
Come on over.
System 20 approved burger joint that tastes so good with a wonderful advertisement of how delicious and delicious it is, but you hacked that also.
I absolutely did.
So you know in a fast food restaurant you can always do the cheeseburger with no bun thing, right?
Right.
But we don't have to do that.
We can do chili.
Chili?
Chili.
Because it has your beans.
It has your protein.
It's the perfect meal, and it tastes well.
Is this yogurt?
Yep.
No, that's sour cream.
Oh, it's sour cream.
Yeah, sour cream and some extra salsa, and it's yummy.
Looks so filling, too.
Genius.
Thank you for doing this.
You're welcome.
It keeps smiling.
I'm proud of you.
Yes, yes, thank you.
Mara, you've been an angel.
Thank you.
Leading the team, but also being out in front of all this stuff and taking the first steps.
God bless you for all that.
Thank you.
It's been a pleasure.
It's been a pleasure.
All right, so you want to be on the system, you want to feel better today, go to dros.com slash system20.
You'll find everything you need to get started.
It's free.
What I'm asking you to do is share it with your friends.
It matters.
We'll be right back.
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE As Harvey Weinstein's trial gets underway in New York, he's charged with new sex crimes in L.A.
We sit down with another accuser as she reveals shocking details about her ordeal.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Have you become an automatic yes machine?
Whenever someone asks you for something, does that come up sometimes?
Right?
Everything's yes.
Are you someone who puts your entire family and their needs before your own?
We're all there.
Because of this, you feel like you're running on empty.
Nothing left.
But chances are, the answer is yes.
And it's time to start taking care of you.
To help you reset and bring your health full circle, I've asked NBA award-winning TV host, sports broadcaster, and mom, Jen Brown, to join me.
She's here on behalf of my trusted sponsorship partner, USADA Health Sciences.
You're a working mom.
You do all the things.
You keep it all balanced.
But you actually argue that doing that might have a detrimental effect on your family.
That's true.
I mean, what you said over there made me just say, I'm like, yes, I need all of these things.
Because as a mom, right, and a woman, you feel like you, you know, carry the weight of the world on your shoulders a little bit, and you want to keep it all together for your family, and you want to, you know, do what's right.
But there's a lot of things to think about during the week, days, months, all of that.
So, like, let's, I've got a demo here because this is going to prove my point, right?
So you want to have, right, your fridge stocked with good food, healthy stuff.
So, you know, one thing you have to think about there.
All right, well, let's talk about, you know, this is fun.
I kind of like it.
How about here?
You want to make sure that your kids, your family's doctor's appointments are all set.
And then you want to make sure, right, that you've got everybody's nutritional support.
Your kids, your husband, your significant other.
Lots to think about, right?
They're not going to do it for you.
Right?
Exactly.
Then, of course, you want to give it your all at work, right?
You're a mom and a working mom, so you want to give it your all.
Let's keep going here.
You want to make sure that the bills are paid.
You know, there's just so many things that you have to think about.
Here's what happens.
Oh!
You knew that was gonna happen, right?
That's life.
Life happens.
And guess what?
You've done all of these things before you've even, you know, taken care of your own health and well-being.
You know, you mentioned vitamins here, right?
That one.
Yep.
And it's interesting that less than 1% of us eat so well that we get all the nutrients that we need in our bodies every day.
It's just emblematic to me of the bigger problems we face.
That's why I think multivitamins and supplementation in general is critical.
Come on over.
What keeps your body running at full speed?
How do you balance your entire life, for you personally?
Sure.
To make sure you don't have that jungle collapse you just saw.
Well, you can't take care of your loved ones and your family if you're not taking care of yourself, right?
And like you said, you need that daily support.
You need your nutrients.
And it's tough to get it, you know, in one place.
So when I get asked all the time how I hold it all together, I try, right?
We try to hold all together.
I talk about how I use USANA's Cell Essentials.
It's a great way to get your daily dose of the nutrients that you need.
Everything from bone health to heart health, your vision, mental health, plus antioxidants.
It's really got everything you need.
How do you spread the wisdom that you have for taking care of your own body through Cell Essentials into the children?
Well, look, you know, it's so tough, right?
We as moms, we beat ourselves up because we want to teach our kids how to eat healthy.
And you try.
But, you know, it's interesting because research shows that actually kids aren't getting the right nutrients that they need for development.
So that's something you have to think about because you want to support them.
You want them to be healthy.
So for us, we also use Usanols, which is a great, it's a daily vitamin.
It's chewable for ages 2 to 12. And it's great, because I have picky eaters.
I don't know, you've got grandkids.
Like, I have picky eaters, and it's just nice to know that they've got everything from their calcium, their vitamin D, the iron, A and B vitamins, like, everything.
You know, everything we need.
As a family, USANA's got to do it.
And they really like the vitamins?
They do.
Well, I mean, I feel like you can ask them yourself.
I think I will.
Well, I trust you when I've got the kids right here.
Here are Rhett and Nash.
Hi, guys.
Hi.
So we were talking with your mom over there about vitamins.
You guys take those usanimal vitamins.
Usanimals are what she's talking about right now.
Yeah?
Yeah.
Tell him.
Do you like them?
Mm-hmm.
When do we take them?
Tell him.
You know what he'll like?
Why do we take our vitamins?
For what?
Because it makes us stronger.
Let me see those muscles.
Like this?
So?
Muscles like this?
Yeah.
You like the taste of the usanimals?
Uh-huh.
Yes.
You do?
Yes.
Oh, my goodness.
How'd you get them to do this?
It's unbelievable.
They just got so shy.
I love it.
I know.
You guys, they talk at home all the time.
TV's on.
We're gonna work on that, huh?
I love it.
When do you take these animals?
Take diamonds.
You take them?
Before school?
After school.
You guys like to dance?
Let me see you dance.
Oh, yeah.
They've got moves.
They've got moves.
They got all the moves.
They got all the moves.
Do you dance when you take your Usanimals to make you happy?
Yeah.
They do.
All right, you dance into it.
Where can families, where can busy moms find Usanimals and Cell Central?
Usana.com.
Super easy.
You can go there.
They've got everything you need.
It's awesome.
We love it.
Simple, easy, take advantage of all the wisdom, and it's never too early to start building healthy habits.

Dance, let's see you dancing.
We'll be right back.
Dance.
We'll be right back.
Dance.
We'll be right back.
Dance.
I know we all fear the F word.
Failure.
But there's new science that says we sometimes need to fail.
All of us do.
Self-proclaimed perfectionist Sharon here says that she doesn't like to fail like many of you don't, but you see you're already making a face.
Because I just don't, like, whatever I do, I just, like, don't.
It has to be just right.
So what's the recent failure that's bothering you right now?
I made these brown turkey muffins the other day, and I wanted them all to be even, like, inside the tin, but some of them kind of mushroomed out and looked like a mushroom, so I wasn't happy with that.
Look, I make mistakes, too.
My mistakes, unfortunately, have consequences because I'm in the hospital.
But actually, recently, I gave my granddaughter, Philo, a movie to watch, which I thought was just fine.
It wasn't.
Nightmares, complaints from my daughter, you know.
But you learn.
Actually, here's the data.
You're supposed to be wrong 15% of the time.
So, 85 is what you should aim for.
It's a solid B. And when you make mistakes, you learn.
You struggle to get better at it.
For example, juggling.
I'm sure you're very good at juggling.
I don't think, oh yeah, okay, no.
Have you ever juggled?
Maybe a schedule, but that's about it.
Here, take those.
I'll try to.
We're both going to see if we can come back over here.
We're going to both see if we can juggle.
You're going to cheer us on?
Face out that way.
I want people to see you, okay?
Yeah, they're going to film it and show it to all of America, but don't worry about that.
All right?
You ready to do it?
Let's go.
Oh, my goodness!
Whoa!
How'd you do that?
How'd you do that?
You know what?
It doesn't matter how I did it.
It matters that you tried to do it.
Okay.
And when you fail, you'll learn.
We get stronger.
Just make sure the mistakes are ones you can manage and get people to support you through them.
But I'm proud of you, whatever you do in life, because we're all made beautifully, even with our failures.
God bless, Sharon.
Remember, the power of one lies the power of you.
One person, one voice, speaking the truth.
