Time Text
Today on the Dr. Oz Show, do you know your metabolism type?
You can't tell it just by looking at the outside of somebody.
Why what you don't know is making you fat.
The same foods that keep your friends slim and make you puffy and tired.
Take the quiz to find out your type.
And the doctor at the forefront of a weight loss revolution.
What is it that has women hanging on every word you say?
Is this the secret you've been waiting for?
Who's right for this program?
Next. Next. Next.
Next.
Today, an underground grassroots health phenomenon.
It was jump-started by a book that's quietly sold over a million copies.
It's called Eat to Live.
And the promise, if you follow it, is you will feel better than ever.
You will never have another sick day.
And the added benefit, you will lose a record amount of weight.
Now, the man making all this possible is Dr. Joel Fuhrman.
And he has an astonishingly simple secret.
Meet Dr. Joel Fuhrman.
He's radical, he's revolutionary, and he's going where few doctors dare to tread.
He says you can rid yourself of exhaustion, pain, and pills forever if you just use food as medicine.
Dr. Fuhrman's devoted his entire medical career to uncovering all the ways food can make you feel better than you have in years.
Sound too good to be true?
Millions of Fuhrmanites say he's the real deal.
They claim his simple plan not only changed, but saved their lives when nothing else worked.
And his secret weapons can all be found right inside your refrigerator.
Now, before we meet Dr. Fuhrman, let's take a look at some of the women's lives that he has changed.
Jessica was taken up to 10 prescribed medications daily for everything from allergies and anxiety to sleep and acne.
Today, she is medication-free.
Jodi experienced years of embarrassing psoriasis, big red rashes.
Today, rashes are completely gone.
And Heather says she barely slept an hour a night and suffered extreme fatigue.
But after following Dr. Fuhrman's plan, she now gets a full night's sleep.
And guess what?
She lost 55 pounds in the process.
So let's meet the man changing the lives of millions of women, Dr. Joel Fuhrman.
Welcome to the show, Joel.
Thank you.
I mean, stunning testimonials.
I know of dozens more.
What is it that has women hanging on every word you say?
Well, it's a combination of factors.
Number one, the science is compelling.
The new science where you're in control of your health destiny, where you don't have to have high blood pressure, get heart disease, get diabetes, have dementia when you get older, even protect against cancer.
The science compels them.
And then the results they get, the results, they start following the program and they drop weight easily.
Their headaches go away.
They feel more energized.
They feel better.
And then emotionally, they know they're eating best for their body and best for their long-term health.
And that combination of when you're eating something that tastes good and you know it's good for yourself, too, and you see the changes happening to your body, you know you've got to do it.
I've been following your work for a long time.
One of the most provocative elements is your thoughts, your philosophy about medications and about food.
And what we're about to hear, I think, is critically important.
It's one of the main things I'm going to focus on in this show.
So please explain it to all of us.
Well, you know, let's say you brought your car to the mechanic because the dashboard was flashing oil, oil, oil, and you took them in there and the mechanic cut the wire to the dashboard so you couldn't see the oil light flashing, right?
You continue to drive the car with no oil.
Well, medications Medications give people the false sense that they're taking care of themselves.
It lowers their blood pressure, but the process of the hardening of the arteries continues to advance, and they need more medication and more medication.
Notice what I'm saying here is that the medications function like permission slips to enable people to continue to continue their diet styles, which are causing the disease to inevitably advance.
When you live a healthy lifestyle, it's more powerful than medication.
And we really can do much, and that's why we have the health care crisis we have today.
Because people are overly reliant on medication.
Let me push on this a little bit, because what you're saying, if I hear this right, I'll rotate some of these down, because I just began looking at your writing.
You're saying that medications that we commonly prescribe, things like diabetes and high blood pressure, high cholesterol, allergies, pain, these are the most common things you take pills for.
Are you arguing we don't need those at all?
Right.
I'm arguing not only do we don't need them, but they make things so much worse.
You know, when you take diabetic medication, it makes you gain weight.
You know, the reliance of medication has caused a healthcare crisis in America, and we're not going to solve it in Washington.
We need a healthier population.
We have to solve it by teaching people how to prevent these diseases.
And now we know that you don't have to have heart disease.
You don't have to have high blood pressure.
You don't have to have diabetes.
And we can win the war on cancer.
And food is the secret here.
Doesn't it make you a bit of an outcast among our brethren, other doctors, when you're out there saying you don't need any of these pills, that these diseases can be treated wholly with food alone?
You've helped found that food pharmacy concept, the idea that food is medicine.
Right.
You know, that may be true to a degree, but on the other hand, there's an army of physicians that are excited by this.
I'm seeing doctors thanking me, utilizing my books in their waiting rooms, calling up and telling me their success stories using my program.
This is not integrative medicine.
This is progressive medicine.
This is where medicine should have been going.
We're arming people with the information and motivating them to take better care of their health, and it works.
All right, so let's get into the tactics.
What do you specifically do?
One thing you did was to flip the food pyramid, the typical one that we're given by the government that we've been talking about for half a century.
And you created your own.
We put foods based on their nutrient density.
The foods that have the most high level of micronutrients, the foods that have the highest potential to protect against cancer, that's the food you put at the base of the pyramid.
But being practical about this, you cut out half the foods we eat.
If you notice, the vegetables are at the whole bottom.
The vegetables are at the bottom.
Fruits and beans next to that.
And then you've got the grains.
All those things are in the middle there.
That's the standard of most of our diets.
The breads, the pastries.
Exactly.
You know, the American diet is 62% of calories from processed foods.
And those foods, the breads and the pastries and the oils and the sugars, they have no significant micronutrient load.
There's no phytochemicals in there that prevent cancer.
We know that those foods, a simple strawberry, has more than 700 nutrients in it.
A piece of broth is more than a thousand nutrients in it.
We're taking foods and we're making the basis of our pyramid, and those foods literally have almost no micronutrients, no antioxidants, no anti-cancer phytochemicals, and that's the basis of our diet, and then we eat 26% of calories from animal products.
Now, animal products don't have any phytochemicals or antioxidants either.
With less than, let's say, 8% from healthy produce in the diet, where are we getting the protective nutrients?
No wonder we have a population who can't sleep at night, who's emotionally depressed and fatigued and have reflux esophagitis and indigestion and constipation and gallstones and hemorrhoids and then gets demented and strokes and heart attacks and cancer when they get older.
And I'm saying, here's the fascinating thing, is that let's wipe out heart attacks.
Not have people demented in nursing homes.
Think about, you know, when people say to me, you know, isn't this tough to make your diet so healthy?
You know, I'm saying, well, it's awful tough to be in a nursing home after a stroke or with dementia, too.
You know, this is putting money in your health bank account here when you're young.
In many ways, it does sound like a diet.
And listen, I'm a big advocate.
We've talked about the fact that you treat cancer on your scale, right?
You get on the scale, if you're overweight, you're prone to cancer.
So why wouldn't I just say this is just another diet, just another weight loss technique?
Well, you know, we can't separate weight loss from health, and a lot of diets try to do that.
They're intertwined like fibers of a cloth.
When you're eating the foods that have the most powerful anti-cancer effects, they inhibit cellular proliferation and they inhibit fat storage and fat proliferation and fat growth as well.
The same foods that inhibit fat on your body stop and hold cancer in their tracks.
When you eat these foods, like mushrooms and onions and green vegetables and peppers and tomatoes, it says, no way, Jose, we're not letting fat grow on you, and it doesn't let cancer cells replicate either.
So we can't separate health and weight.
It's the same thing.
So in other words, it's not just calories in and calories out either.
It's the biochemical effects of these foods have to prevent cellular growth.
And you know, we're talking here about insulin-like growth factor one are promoted by the American diet.
And the American diet, we need a diet with a high glycemic effect that promotes insulin.
And insulin is a fat storage hormone and puts fat on you.
But insulin promotes cancer.
So the same hormones that promote fat promote cancer.
And when you eat a lot of animal products, it promotes insulin-like growth factor 1, IGF-1.
And that promotes fat storage, dementia, aging, and cancer.
So let me ask the big question.
Who's ripe for this program, this Furman program?
Well, when you take nutritional excellence to such a degree of superiority, superior nutrition here, it works therapeutically to reverse disease, like to get rid of your high blood pressure, to get rid of your headaches, to reverse autoimmune disease, to actually melt heart disease, to get your blood pressure down, because you don't need blood pressure medication.
So number one, 90% of our population over the age of 60 are taking medications.
You know, so I'm saying, but it's not just for overweight people.
It's not just for sick people.
It's for any person who wants to live a better life, a more pleasurable life.
I mean, what about you?
What about me?
Do we want to have to have a heart attack someday?
Do we want to be running for a bus, have to worry about that?
Do we want to be demented?
Who wants to, you know, let's, what about women who were at fear of breast cancer?
Now we know that we don't have, you don't have to get breast cancer.
We can wipe out breast cancer.
We have, you know, there are populations around the world.
Look at Korea, even 30 years ago.
They had one-tenth the breast cancer we have in this country today.
And their breast cancer rates have skyrocketed in recent years as they adopted more of our type of diet style.
We have the knowledge right now to win the war, and now we should take advantage of it.
So when we come back, I'm going to talk about that knowledge because we've got the loyal followers of Dr. Furman.
They say the simple things they did in their busy lives have changed their health and their family's health for the better.
We'll meet them after this.
Up next, they've taken back their health.
My headaches just melted away.
Dr. Furman saved my life.
No more migraines.
26 pounds gone in 30 days.
Take away your appetite, the food cravings, the food addictions.
The simple plan to change your health forever.
Would you ever in your life think that food could do that?
Coming up.
I'm excited to be on Dr. Oz.
Dr. Oz's show!
So let's start talking.
Now the web to have a national conversation about health and wellness.
This is a no embarrassment zone.
There's no topic that's off-race.
I came to work today.
I'm so lucky.
And make sure you're sharing this information with the people you're good to go.
Be sure to subscribe to my channel and don't miss anything.
And remember to check back off and see what's new.
Now, back to the show.
We're back with Dr. Joel Furman.
We're about to meet his patients.
Now, they call themselves Furmanites.
They are passionate, they're loyal, and they say his simple plan has changed their health forever.
My name is Adrian, and three years ago, my health had spiraled out of control.
I was exhausted all the time.
I had high blood pressure, I had a severe case of sleep apnea, and I was really struggling.
I'm Sarah, and I've been plagued by migraines my whole life.
It kind of felt like I just shut down when I had bad headaches.
I was a slave to five medications that I took every day and in addition to that I was popping ibuprofen like it was candy.
I had to take a handful of pills to try and help ease the pain but it got so bad I had to take shots.
I really was at the end of my rope.
Finally I stumbled upon Dr. Fuhrman's website.
A friend of mine made an appointment for me as a gift to go see Dr. Fuhrman.
Everything in me knew that this was going to change my life.
I started making changes in the way I was eating and my headaches just melted away.
Within a couple weeks I felt so much better.
Now I feel empowered.
I'm very strong.
And not just strong in that I'm healthy, but strong in that I have control.
It's like the whole world had opened up again, and now I just want to share it with as many people as I can.
This is very, very delicious.
Paying forward this gift is something that I'm honored to do.
My niece said to me, I really want to take on this lifestyle, which really just touched my heart.
I believe I was on a track to an early dad.
Dr. Furman saved my life.
I love that you're both paying this forward.
Thanks for joining us.
So, Adrian, how did you get started?
I got started because, as the video said, I had a gift to go see Dr. Fuhrman and he told me what to do.
He said, come back in 30 days and do it.
And I left his office and I stopped at the market and I bought a bunch of produce and a bunch of fruit and I went home and I got out a hefty bag and I cleaned out everything that was in my refrigerator, everything that was in my cabinet, sugar, salt, oil, all the things that...
I just knew I wasn't going to need anymore.
And by the time I went back to see Dr. Fuhrman, at the end of 30 days, I had lost 26 pounds.
And I felt, I was still, so I was just about, I was just under 300 pounds, but I felt amazing despite my weight.
It had nothing to do, all along I always thought it was my weight that made me feel bad, that made me feel exhausted, that gave me headaches, that gave me my disease state.
But ultimately, once I changed what I ate, it changed how I felt within literally a matter of weeks.
Are you hearing what Adrienne's saying?
I've got to underline this for a second.
Yeah, please.
A lot of us think, you know what, if I can lose the weight, I'll feel better again.
I think one of the big insights that I'm gaining from this experience of reading Joel's work is that if you eat the right things, you'll feel better and you'll happen to lose weight.
Absolutely.
I think that stops a lot of us down.
Yeah.
So, Joel, you must see this all the time in your practice.
How commonly do folks blame all the different things happening in their lives and their weight when, in fact, the root issue is being addressed?
That's right.
You know, the weight and the health issues are intertwined like fibers of a cloth.
And they both melt away at the same time.
And like we talked about, the same foods that are most powerfully therapeutic also powerfully help you lose weight too.
And help you, you know what, they take away your appetite, the food cravings, the food addictions, and they start to crave and desire the healthier foods because it makes them feel so good.
And then emotionally, they also know they're eating things that taste good that are also changing the biochemistry of their body as they're eating them.
Sir, you've got a compelling story because you're not overweight, but you had significant health problems.
How did you start?
And again, I want to get into the details of what you specifically did in your home.
Well, at first, when I stumbled upon Dr. Fuhrman's website, I learned that maybe 80 or 90 percent of people could get rid of their migraines from following this plan.
And at that point in my life, I was really, really desperate because nothing was working.
So I read his book.
And I threw away all the junk food laying around my house and just went out and bought kale.
Something I had never, ever, ever done in my life.
Kale.
Kale.
And at first I couldn't stand it.
Honestly, I couldn't stand it.
I'd eat some kale and then I'd eat an orange and try to make the taste go away.
What a program.
But after about a month, I started really enjoying the food and now this is all I would ever want to eat.
I have to ask the big question about your migraines.
I understand their symptoms are gone and you're medication free.
Did you ever in your life think that food could do that?
Not in a million years.
I thought a pill was the cure for everything.
I never would have thought that a diet could change the way I was living and get rid of my migraines.
Very compelling stories.
When we come back, the firm is going to show us why it's so easy to eat this way.
And it actually is much easier than I think a lot of folks expect.
you'll be surprised at how quickly your brain starts to crave the foods that he prescribes. - Coming up.
You're toxically addictive to eating more.
Break this down for us in a way that everyone can start using this today.
Secrets to craving the foods you should be eating.
And later, what's your metabolism type?
This is different from anything we've ever spoken about.
Secrets to burning calories faster.
I'm excited to be on Dr. Oz!
Dr. Oz's show!
So let's start talking.
Now the web to have a national conversation about health and wellness.
This is a no embarrassment zone.
There's no topic that's off limits.
I came to work today.
I'm so lucky.
And make sure you're sharing this information with the people you love.
You're good to go.
Be sure to subscribe to my channel.
You don't miss anything.
And remember to check back off and see what's going on.
Now, back to the show.
We're back with Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of the wildly popular book, Eat to Live, and his new book is called Super Immunity.
He's here with Adrian and Sarah, who say his plan changed their lives forever.
So, Dr. Fuhrman, what are we supposed to eat?
Break this down for us in a way that everyone can start using this today.
Well, one thing I start with is the salad is the main dish.
Because, you know, eating raw vegetables, the calories are not all biologically available, but the nutrients are so needed by the body.
So we're talking here about the most powerful anti-cancer Healing therapeutic foods, an acronym so people can memorize them quickly, G-BOMBS. G-BOMBS. G-B-O-M-B-S. Greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries, and seeds.
If Americans eat those foods on a regular basis, we'd have a completely different healthy population without these diseases.
It'd be amazing.
Walk us through the first thing someone does when they want to start doing the program.
How do you get started?
Well, a great way to start is to make, like, for lunch, have the salad be the main dish.
So then make a delicious-tasting salad dressing.
That's the whole key.
You make the healthy foods taste great.
And we make the dishes with the salads, the vegetable soups.
On the weekend, make a nice vegetable soup with onions and tomatoes, you know, roasted tomatoes and mushrooms.
You put those anti-cancer foods in there.
And you can have the soup for the whole week.
This sounds great, but I've got to say, and I suspect people are thinking this right now, they're thinking it's too hard to do it.
My kids will never eat this.
So, Adrian, let me just put you on the spot if you don't mind.
Is that a rational thing for people to be thinking?
How do you get past that?
It's not.
Number one, because it's your house.
So nothing's more important than that.
But ultimately, I have a very demanding job.
I have a very busy schedule.
I do volunteer work.
And I have a rich social life.
And I still found time on Sunday night to cook for the week, to cook a big pot of soup, a pot of stew to prepare.
Wednesday afternoon after work, I'd run to the market and do my midweek kind of catch up and start again on the weekend.
You can make time.
We make time for the things we prioritize.
And Sarah, you know, you obviously went through a transition with your kale hatred to a kale affinity.
When you just talk, you know, think about your day right now.
What's a classic thing you might make for yourself that you would like, that's practical, that people could make at home and might actually taste good, at least initially?
Well, I actually enjoy making a kale, avocado, and apple salad.
What a show-off she is.
Kale, avocado, apple.
Yeah, it's very easy to make, and it's delicious.
It makes me eat a lot of kale, so...
It's a trifecta.
I gotta say, you know, Adrian and Sarah speak very nicely about this, but if I can, let me explain to everybody what Dr. Perlman is alluding to, and I think this is a really compelling concept.
These three cylinders represent our stomachs, right?
Your stomach can be filled by junk food.
If you don't mind, Adrian, help me with this.
You pour some junk food into your stomach, 400 calories worth, for example, and it looks like this.
Not very full.
In fact, you're so hungry that, unfortunately, you'll keep eating.
Now, let's say you do one better than that, and you actually say, I'm going to have 400 calories of pasta.
Now, if you have pasta for lunch, Joshua, what that does, you'll be a little bit better off than junk food, but just marginally.
And the problem with these two scenarios, again, they both have 400 calories.
The problem with both these scenarios is you actually don't feel full.
So you're toxically addicted to eating more, especially if you're turning on other mechanisms in your body.
And there's no protective value.
What we're talking about, Siri, you want to help me with this?
Is 400 calories, but in a very different way.
You can pour all this stuff in there.
You can squish it in there all you want.
And at the end of the day, you still had 400 calories.
Make sense?
So, Dr. Fuhrman, what's the easiest way to incorporate these foods into your day?
Well, the easiest way is to cook like Adrian was saying.
She prepares food on the weekend.
And she makes a big pot of soup and she has it made for the whole week.
But I think that the key recipe here is to make some delicious tasting salad dressings.
Because you can't just eat vegetables plain.
You want to make them taste really great.
And you're going to put a lot of food, you know, different things.
You're going to put some maybe sautéed onions or, you know, roasted mushrooms or something on the salad.
The G-bomb foods.
The G-bombs, right.
So soup and salad is good, but we make great desserts, too.
Like a chocolate brownie made with beans, a bean brownie.
Or a dessert, like an ice cream made with mangoes and coconut and lemon.
We've got to give people the feeling.
Now they light up.
Yeah.
Dr. Furman has been saying what you eat directly affects your body and that my friends also includes your metabolism.
Up next, find out how your metabolism can change and what your metabolism type is.
Coming up.
Every one of us is born with a unique metabolic type.
Based on your general mood and what you crave.
I'm obsessed with potato chips and pretzels.
Ice cream and sweets.
I love it.
It's like my oxygen.
Or you could be somewhere in the middle.
Foods to boost your metabolism.
I've got a plan for every one of these metabolic types.
Next.
And remember to check back off and see what's new.
Now, back to the show.
We're back.
We've been talking about the right foods that can help prevent disease in your body.
But did you know they can also accelerate your metabolism?
Now, science has discovered that just like there's a blood type or a body type, every one of us is born with a unique metabolic type.
The same foods that keep your friends slim and make you puffy and tired.
So, you got to eat right for your type.
So, what is your metabolism type?
Well, you can't tell it just by looking at the outside of somebody.
Sarah, Jen, and Emily are joining me.
If you don't mind, if you could all stand.
So, just by looking at your body types, you'd all think you'd burn calories sort of the same way, wouldn't you?
In fact, your sisters.
Yes.
Thinking about your dad, what he went through.
So, just because you look the same on the outside, the metabolisms can be quite different, and Kate, in fact, yours are.
So, today we're going to help you find yours.
I'm going to go through the main characteristics for every metabolism type.
So, let's start with the first type.
Have a seat, if you don't mind.
Thank you.
We're going to talk about Sarah.
You go first.
Okay.
So, let's talk about the foods that you crave.
Okay, well, I'm obsessed with potato chips and pretzels, and I love salt.
So, salty snacks.
Yes.
Potato chips and pretzels in particular.
What kinds of things...
Actually, I'll ask you differently.
Do you find yourself to be sort of a calm person, or are you more anxious?
I could ask your sisters if you want, but...
They'll answer, yes.
I'm easygoing, but I tend to get a lot of anxiety, and I don't know why.
And what do you do when you get anxious?
I eat an entire bag of potato chips.
But they're baked.
I go for the baked ones.
So, this is an important point.
It may be that your reaction to the stress, anxiety that you're feeling, which is to get those potato chips, which have salt on them, may actually be causing the problem that you're having.
Which is pretty typical for a lot of folks because your metabolism doesn't process those foods as efficiently as it should.
And your body is crazily trying to get out of this vicious cycle that you created for it.
Because you are in fact metabolic body type A. You're not alone.
It may be happening to a lot of other women who are craving salt just like you.
And here's what metabolic body type A is all about.
It's about people who have a strong appetite.
They create fatty, salty foods.
Let me know if this checks out with you.
They often feel fatigue and anxiety.
They're talkative and they're outgoing.
Is that you?
Yes.
Sister's nodding yes.
How many of you think that you're type A? Put your hands up there.
It's a fair number of people.
So I don't want you all to worry.
I've got a plan for you.
In fact, I've got a plan for every one of these metabolic types.
But we want to identify which one we're all in first.
So we're going to put you in type A. Okay.
Let's shift to the next type.
Jen.
You have a very different reaction to food, I understand, than Sarah does.
So what's the classic go-to snack for you?
I have to have my ice cream.
Ice cream and sweets.
I love it.
It's like my oxygen.
If I don't have ice cream, I'm in trouble.
And does your body react well to that?
Does it energize you?
I don't know about if it energizes me, but I just love it.
So here's the deal.
A lot of folks react very differently to salty foods versus sweet foods.
This is one of the big differences between these two different types.
So in the middle of the afternoon, Jen, when you're feeling a little bit tired, what do you do?
So I try to focus throughout the day, but yes, I do get tired and I have to have, I crave literally also coffee.
I have to have a latte in the afternoon.
It focuses me.
Alright, so caffeine to focus you and you like sweets.
Alright, so you are classic metabolism type B. And that's to find what that means for everyone at home as well.
These are the characteristics, remember these.
Relatively weak appetites, so not quite as much as your sister.
Ambitious, craves sweets, you organize, you tend to get stressed out.
And by the way, that makes you very dependent on caffeine.
So you rev you up a little bit more because you sort of peter out otherwise.
And you tend to be sensitive.
That's true.
Is that true?
Yes, she's very sensitive.
I like that.
There's agreement here.
Now listen, I'm going to be clear about this.
This is different from anything we've ever spoken about on this show before, everybody.
What I'm trying to say is the foods that you're eating are directly affecting your personality.
And your personality and the cravings you have are actually taking you into the foods that create that cycle that we spoke about earlier.
So it's an important observation.
All right, now if you're having trouble figuring out if you're type A or type B, which I suspect a lot of folks are, well then you may actually like both salty and sweet.
You may actually be a combination.
You might be like Emily, who's actually metabolic type C. Right, I love it all.
I love chocolate-covered popcorn.
Is that what he had?
My favorite snack is a chocolate-covered popcorn.
Are you kidding me?
That is truly a combination.
So you like both types of tastes.
You have sort of a combination of personalities.
Are you generally more calm or anxious?
I try to stay calm, but I worry a lot, and I'm very nervous.
And I worry when I don't even need to worry.
So that's just how I act normally.
Agreed, sisters?
Yes.
Well, you don't have to worry anymore, because it might be the foods that are actually causing you to behave that way.
And this is one of the reasons I feel so passionate about this topic, is if you could clue in to how your metabolic body type, the desire of your body to eat certain foods is affecting your personality, you can adapt accordingly.
So here are the classic characteristics of type C metabolism.
Fluctuating unpredictable appetite, It could be a combination of sweets and salties, like you like, with the chocolate-covered popcorn.
I can't believe you like those, by the way.
Tend towards anxiety and nervousness.
And a lot of times, folks will suffer lots of aches and pains if they're metabolic type C. Well, I do have back pain.
You do?
She complains about it.
She complains about it.
Well, the complaining element is a big part of it, by the way, and that goes with C a fair amount.
Listen, I would say, one of these is not better than the other.
These are just an observation.
And he's always the best.
People will vary, and whatever they are, they are.
There's a ton of science that's been done over the last half a century looking at this basic foundation of work, and it comes back down to insights about how we're all different, because we came from different places.
It just tells you what body needs you have and what foods will deal with the cravings that your body have most effectively.
So, if you're interested in knowing what to do about it and what you should eat for your different metabolism types, then up next, I'm going to talk about the foods that you can be customizing for yourself and do it right.
The best part is we're already in your kitchen.
up next the secrets to eating right for your metabolism type You may have some fat in your dairy.
So I can eat real cheese?
Yes.
It may take some getting used to.
I like to eat her diet.
You do, don't you?
Yes.
But the payoff is worth it.
Coming up...
I'm excited to be on Dr. Oz.
Dr. Oz's show.
So let's start talking.
Now the web, David, a national conversation about health and wellness.
This is a no embarrassment zone.
There's no topic that's off limits.
I came to work today.
I'm so lucky.
And make sure you're sharing this information with the people you love.
You're good to go.

And remember to check back off and see what's going on.
Now, back to the show.
We're back.
Whether you crave salty foods, sweet foods, or a mixture of both, you have a unique metabolism type that reacts better to certain foods.
What you eat impacts your personality.
That's an important insight.
Today, I'm going to tell you how to eat right for your type.
Let's start with everyone like Sarah, who craves salty foods and suffers from a little bit of anxiety and treats the anxiety with more salty foods.
That's called the metabolism type A.
That's what you are, now that you know that.
Yes.
Your metabolism very efficiently utilizes proteins and fats.
That's true for all type A's.
And so because of that, you actually prefer to use those more than carbs in your diet.
You're craving salt because it's actually reminding you about meats and about proteins and things like that.
So your plate ought to be 50% protein, 30% fats, and 20% carbohydrates.
Is that clear?
Yes.
And literally, this is what your plate will look like.
So there's no chips on it.
No chips on this.
Again, you want the salt, but not in the form of carbohydrates.
It should be the least common thing in metabolism type A people's diets.
Because it will take you in the wrong direction.
It will cause that anxiety that you're having.
Now, it's especially important for type A's to recognize you have to have a little bit of protein.
You know, in almost everything you eat, at least get you in the right direction.
But it's not just any protein.
If you notice, I picked darker cuts of meat.
So steaks, obviously, but darker types of poultry, dark colored fish like tuna and salmon.
You sort of want that kind of darkness in your life because your metabolism is geared up to eat this and digest this kind of food.
Usually I do white meat.
No, no, no.
White meat we're going to get to over there.
Your sister's got that.
You may go in that direction, but it's actually not what your metabolism is telling you to do.
The other thing that's sort of interesting, if you just look here, I put some dairy here.
If I were to open your fridge right now, what kind of percentage fat would I find in the dairy products you have?
It would be skim milk and fat-free or low-fat cheese.
You are done that.
From now on, I want you, and this is good news, you may have some fat in your dairy.
So I can eat real cheese?
Yes, real cheese, and you can have 2% fat milk.
I actually think it's better for your metabolism type.
Because people make the mistake of believing that by having a low-fat dairy product, they're better off, but that's mostly sugar, which puts you over here in the carbohydrate category.
You want to try to stay over here as much as you can.
Fair enough?
Yes.
Remember, metabolism type A, just a little bit of refinement to start your food.
You can't have very much, because you can't metabolize it effectively.
You're in?
Yes.
Okay.
What don't you like about it?
How can I help you understand it better?
The dark meat scares me a little bit.
I've always been told to eat white meat.
You know, that's a fallacy.
There's not a big health benefit just abstractly between dark meat and light meat.
I don't know why that got so prevalently believed in our society, but it's not the case.
In fact, if you like the taste of one over the other, you probably ought to go in that direction.
But once you know your metabolism type, you know where to stay.
Okay.
Now, let's move on to Jen.
Everyone else like Jen who craves sweet foods, the metabolic type B people, they have to adjust their metabolism a little bit by realizing that it will easily store carbohydrates.
That's why your body likes sweet things.
It actually will desire to be on carbohydrates.
It just doesn't want candy.
It wants real carbohydrates.
So, I put here 70% of your plate being full of carbs.
You get about 20% or so of proteins and only 10% of fats.
So it's very different from what we just left Sarah with.
I like to eat her diet, though.
You do, don't you?
I mean, this bread is scary.
But you know, the thing is, if you don't eat the diet that's designed for your metabolic type, then you're going to end up craving that caffeine all afternoon.
You're going to not be able to function the way your body naturally wants to function.
It can't deal with the slower processing of some foods over here.
You know, you actually get through this food in different ways.
You've got to have it as a main part of your diet.
Okay.
Well, that's exciting because I love bread, but I just don't eat it.
Well, now you can have a little more bread, but it's going to be 100% whole grain bread.
Same, these are all healthy carbohydrates.
I recommend that you go out and get sugary stuff.
Fair enough?
Okay.
Now, the one thing that, you know, type B's really do great on a low-fat diet, relatively speaking.
So try to slice it down as little as you can in your diet, and this will take you to the right place, generally speaking.
Great.
What's your favorite thing on here?
I would have to say the fish.
The fish.
Well, the fish can go, but you know, notice it's light fish.
Right.
Light meat.
This is breast from poultry.
Right, and it's funny because I like dark meat.
You do.
No wonder!
You must have driven your father crazy.
Your dairy also has to be low-fat dairy because you can't get away with the fat that Sarah can get through.
That's what type B's do.
Finally, unlike type A and type B, we've got, for Emily, type C, a whole different program.
This is for people who crave both salty and sweet food, like chocolate-covered popcorn.
You're neither type A nor type B like your sisters.
You're type C. When we come back, I've got the exact foods for your metabolism type, so stay with us.
Coming up, the benefits of being metabolism type C. More fats than either of your sisters.
And later, I'm handing over my show to the audience.
You won't believe what happens next.
And now we're on our way.
You can't miss it.
I'm excited to be on Dr. Oz.
Dr. Oz's show.
So let's start talking.
Now the web, David, a national conversation about health and wellness.
This is a no embarrassment zone.
There's no topic that's off limits.
I came to work today.
I'm so lucky.
And make sure you're sharing this information with the PP alum.
You're good to go.
Be sure to subscribe to my channel.
You don't miss anything.
And remember to check back off and see what's new.
Now, back to the show.
We were talking about eating right for your metabolism type.
Now, we know that type A folks will crave salty foods.
Type B folks crave sweet foods.
Now we're up to folks who crave both salty and sweet foods.
If you, like Emily here, are often suffering aches and pains, then you're often also in metabolism type C. You got your back pain.
And you crave sweets and salts.
That's right.
So what you need to be eating for your diet is very different from what type A and type B can tolerate, even if you look the same, even if you're related to them.
Because type C folks have the ability to utilize all three nutrients, fats, carbs, proteins.
You can do all of them equally.
And so we divide your plate into 30%, you know, a third each of those major groups of fats, of protein, and of carbohydrates.
And interestingly, that means you actually get to have more fats than either of your sisters over there.
Okay.
That's good news for most people.
You going to celebrate about that?
Woohoo!
Which of these fats do you like the most?
The eggs.
And I typically stay away from cheese, but it looks like I should be eating more of it.
You can't have more of it because your metabolism will deal with it in an effective way.
It also can soothe some of the other issues you have in your life.
Again, I'm going to be clear about this.
What's different about this idea, and it's been looked at for a long time, is not just that you have metabolism differences, but that the foods you eat change your personality.
And so take you in a place you don't want to be.
So if you want to avoid having the aches and pains and being concerned about them and complaining about them and dealing with them in that way, this is a diet that will take you in that direction.
You also, by the way, notice it's a mixture of different colors of proteins.
So you'll have the light and the dark colored fish.
You can have light meat and dark meat poultry.
You can have beans and steak.
You can have anything you want, which is a little different from what type A's and type B's can tolerate.
And finally, you can fill up the last part of your plate with carbohydrates because you're free to have those as well.
So again, I want the healthier versions of all these.
So let me go through this again.
By the way, I gather you've pointed out the dairy's a little different.
Are there other differences between your normal plate and what we're having here?
Actually, it looks pretty similar.
Good.
So we're heading in the right direction.
All right.
Let's look one more time at all these three plate types, because I want you to all remember these in case you're type A, for example.
Sarah's over there celebrating about her type A plate, where it's half meat, mostly dark colored, and then the breakdown of fats and carbohydrates.
What do you like the most about your plate?
The cheese.
You like the cheese?
Well, you're allowed to have 30% fats.
That's pretty good.
I want some on her plate, though.
You want some?
Of course.
You're sisters.
Of course you do.
And, Jen, you're type B. And, you know, type B, folks, you have sweet tooth.
They're allowed to have lots of carbohydrates.
The right kind, of course.
What's going to be the hardest part about being on this program?
Like, thinking that I can actually eat bread and cereals, which I've really cut from my diet in the last 10 years, basically.
Because you thought it wasn't good for you.
Right.
I would argue that you should eat them both because they're long-term.
I think it'll actually support your diet, but it'll also help other issues that you may want to deal with in your personality.
You'll probably get off the caffeine.
And finally, let's talk about, Emily, your balanced approach.
What's going to be the biggest challenge about this?
Just doing the 30% of each because I tend to stay with the proteins and with the grains and potatoes.
What I'm looking forward to is your family meals.
I'm going to come over at Thanksgiving and see what's going on.
You're invited.
I'm actually going to turn the show over to you, the audience.
You're all going to run it from now on.
Up next, you get to become the host.
You don't want to miss it.
Up next, Dr. Oz hands his show over to the audience.
