| There should be no way that anyone can find out who you voted for, even after everything's been counted. | ||

| It's very easy to figure out the time someone votes, right? | ||
| Critics say it would not take much to match a ballot with a voter. | ||

| So it says that there was a card created, and I guess maybe they are tracking the card is for Democrat or maybe some other party affiliation. | ||
| If you had a target of one person, just sit there and wait till they vote and note the time on your watch. | ||
| And then, you know, have the bad guys go find that vote. | ||
| The second requirement is absolute transparent trust. | ||
| The system needs to make sure that your vote is securely and accurately counted, sure, but it also needs to be obvious to everyone, no matter their technical knowledge, that the system can be trusted. | ||
| Georgia's vote tallying system is a complex assortment of laptops, iPads, magnetic cards, touchscreens, printers, and scanners. | ||
| Lots of moving parts. | ||
| We need paper records that are marked by the voter, with the voters on hand, where we know that was recorded the way that the voter wanted it recorded. | ||
| So if you're using paper, you place your ballot in a sealed box. | ||
| That doesn't get unsealed until everyone with a stake in the election has someone representing them in the room. | ||
| But the key point is not that paper voting is perfect. | ||
| It isn't. But attacks against it don't scale well. | ||
| If you wanted to go in and specifically manipulate vote counts on every single machine in America, that'd be really hard to do. | ||
| But you don't need to do that to have an impact on the election in 18 either. | ||
| You only have to flip a couple Senate seats to have an impact on US Congress. | ||
| Other election-related systems, like campaign networks and registration databases, are also at risk. | ||
| First, let's talk about electronic voting machines. | ||
| That's where there's a computer at the polling station, so voters still go into a booth. | ||
| It's just that they are pushing buttons or tapping things on a touch screen, not writing on paper. | ||
| Next year, the state of Georgia wants voters to use a new voting machine from a company called Dominion Voting System. | ||
| The system requires voters to select candidates on a computer screen. | ||
| The machine would print a paper ballot, showing the voters' choices stamped with a QR code. | ||
| They replaced paperless machines like these, made by a now-defunct company called Diebold Election Systems. | ||
| A federal judge forced the state to scrap the discredited devices. | ||
| Problem number one, trusting the software and the hardware. | ||
| In theory, our voting computer could be running open source software where anyone can see and check the source code. | ||
| In practice, that doesn't happen. | ||
| It's probably going to be closed source. | ||
| It's probably going to be loaded off an easily compromised USB stick on a computer that's been sitting unguarded and sometimes just idly and inexplicably connected to the internet for years. | ||
| So I've only had access to this for a few minutes, I mean literally a few minutes, and I can already see the threat landscape of this machine. | ||
| We can go in and hack this lock within 10 seconds. | ||
| You gain access to the operating system. | ||
| We could actually remove this and clone this particular USB. The chip for the operating system is not glued in. | ||
| Pretty carefully I can pull that out. | ||
| Now, what that's going to allow me to do is to leave the machine behind and start looking at what's installed on it and what the OS has for exploitation. | ||
| We can go back and start looking at and reverse engineering what's on this. | ||
