[00:00:43] Jesus said, Man cannot live on bread alone, but from every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. [00:00:49] You're listening to Daily Truth. [00:00:53] Men, especially, are called by God to work in a spiritual sense and in a practical sense. [00:01:02] There is a way in which a man can just simply With all the right intentions, he can just simply have too much time on his hands. [00:01:10] Where he's sitting there and contemplating existential questions of the universe, and he's a Christian and he loves the scripture, and so he's delving into deep doctrine and theology and all these kinds of things. [00:01:23] But at the end of the day, if he doesn't have a job, statistics show us that he's probably eventually going to develop depression. [00:01:31] He's probably eventually going to develop anxiety. [00:01:34] He's probably eventually going to be. [00:01:36] Frustrated because he was created by God as a man to do meaningful work. [00:01:44] And sometimes, part of the problem with anxiety and depression and these kinds of things, particularly as they pertain to men, is that men simply just have too much time on their hands. [00:01:56] They're not busy enough. [00:01:58] They should be busier. [00:01:59] I like what Matt Chandler said in one of his sermon clips a few years ago. [00:02:04] He said that a Christian man with a wife and with children wakes up before his children do. [00:02:11] He beats them to waking up and he studies the scripture. [00:02:14] He spends time in prayer. [00:02:16] Then he helps with breakfast and getting the children ready. [00:02:18] Then he gets in the car. [00:02:19] He goes to his job. [00:02:20] He works long hours. [00:02:22] He comes back home. [00:02:23] He helps put away the dishes, all those kinds of things. [00:02:25] He catechizes his children. [00:02:26] He puts them to bed. [00:02:27] He prays over them. [00:02:29] He then spends time with his wife, checking on her heart, washing her in the word, praying with her. [00:02:34] And then when it's all said and done, he goes to bed exhausted. [00:02:39] Part of the reason why. [00:02:41] Certain sins are so prevalent among men in our culture today, such as sexual immorality, is because men just aren't exhausted enough. [00:02:50] Men just have too much energy. [00:02:52] We should be more tired. [00:02:54] We should be exhausted. [00:02:56] Being a man means a life of exhaustion. [00:03:01] Get excited. [00:03:04] It means working hard. [00:03:07] And it means taking on more and more and more responsibility. [00:03:11] Men, especially young men, in many ways they're like trucks, big dually wheeled 750 horsepower trucks. [00:03:19] And what young men want to do with all that power and all that torque is they want to fishtail in the parking lot or they want to drag race their truck, you know, downtown. [00:03:28] But ultimately, what the truck like that, the reason why it's given so much torque and so much power is so that two to four tons of weight could be put down in the bed and the truck can get to work. [00:03:41] One of the things that helps a young man not waver but drive straight. [00:03:45] It is to load him down with a lot of weight, a lot of responsibility, a lot of work. [00:03:53] That's something that is actually life giving. [00:03:56] I've realized that so much of my idolatry in the past, and so being sinfully desirous of comfort, I thought that it would save me. [00:04:08] I thought that comfort and having large blocks of free time in my schedule and all these kinds of things would provide for me a sense of security and peace and joy. [00:04:20] But I can tell you from experience that now I have far less free time, and yet I feel far happier. [00:04:29] I feel much more fulfilled and I also just feel more peace. [00:04:34] Turns out it actually was not really good for me to have massive blocks of free time in my schedule. [00:04:41] What was good for me as a man was to take a wife, to have children, for our church to grow, to begin to take more pastoral and shepherding meetings, to preach more, to teach more, to work more, and to go to bed really tired. [00:04:58] Staying up at night, being anxious and tossing and turning, there could be perhaps something going on there. [00:05:07] Maybe something that you need some medical help with. [00:05:11] In most cases, you probably just need to repent of sin. [00:05:14] Most things, I think, are spiritual and have spiritual implications. [00:05:18] But that being said, it also could be practical, just in the sense that what you need to do is go outside and run, double your hours at work, and then. [00:05:28] Lo and behold, magically, you'll be able to sleep. [00:05:32] One of the reasons that we can't sleep at night is not because we're anxious, it's because we're not tired. [00:05:38] And we're not tired because we don't work. === A Final Request for Reviews (00:16) === [00:05:41] Thanks so much for listening.
