Jared and Nick discuss the political theater that was the Women's Health Protection Act, and why Dems can't seem to actually lead on the important issues. The trickle of John Eastman evidence is leading to lots of connections between the insurrectionists at the capitol and GOP lawmakers as well.

Hey everybody, welcome to the weekender edition of the Muckrake Podcast.
No bottle cap top getting opened.
I already started drinking a beer.
It's one of those weeks, Nate.
This is the start.
This is how it starts, Jared.
This is exactly how it starts.
A reminder, if you want full access to this show, go over to patreon.com slash muckrakepodcast.
And I have to tell you, everybody, this show is king-sized.
Full of just absolute head-scratching bullshit.
Wait, can I interrupt you for one second?
Because I want to let everyone know, if you join the Muckrake Patreon community, we have a Discord, which is really... We don't talk about that enough.
It really is an amazing area where people can get together and have real conversations.
It's absolutely amazing, and it's a wonderful alternative to the utter cesspool, which is modern social media.
In the meantime, Nick, I have the unfortunate duty of letting you know and having to inform you.
The clowns in Congress, they're at it again.
Send in the clowns.
Oh, Oh, it's facing the overturning of Roe v. Wade and the throwing back of women's productive rights being thrown back to the states and probably half of the states outlawing it and probably turning it into a bounty system it's facing the overturning of Roe v. Wade and the throwing back of women's productive
The Democratic Party swoops in like Superman, Nick, and presents the Women's Health Protection Act, which I regret to inform our audience, failed in the Senate. - That's it.
To a vote count of 49 to 51.
Our good friend of the show, Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia.
And across the aisle, who said bipartisanship is dead, Nick?
What a, what an absolute awful thing.
Yeah, it just went too far.
It really, you know, codifying Roe v. Wade was okay with him, if you listen to his quotes, but if you add a little bit of a tweak there, it says that you can't offer medical misinformation.
Hey, that's just too much.
Because are you aware, Jared, that, you know, states are obligated to give patients information about procedures they're going to go through, whether, whatever procedure it is.
You're aware of this, right?
Wait, we're not just like going out and attaching leeches to people and wishing them luck?
Yeah, informed consent.
They must learn about this.
But the problem is that a lot of states, and we know which states those are, I think, will give misinformation about abortion to people to try and convince them not to get one.
That's a problem, believe it or not.
It really is a problem.
You know, it's not, you know, it wasn't like last year became a problem, Jared.
I mean, this has been a problem since 1972 or 71 when they passed.
So, you know, that's just too far for Manchin.
He doesn't want that real, the correct information to get into the hands of the patients when they need it.
Can I just say, if I never hear the name Joe Manchin again, I will be so relieved.
Like, I'm so tired of this man.
I'm so tired of his bullshit.
Also, a couple people putting on the list are tired of their bullshit.
Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski.
Thanks for nothing, dipshits.
Thanks for nothing.
Thanks for absolutely nothing and for years hiding behind the veneer of being the quote-unquote good Republicans.
49 to 51.
Lovely.
Great work, everyone, all the way around.
You know, they used to avoid doing that right when they knew it was going to fail.
But I guess, hey, this is good.
They got them on the record, Jared.
Now they got those Republicans.
I wasn't sure where all those Republicans landed on the abortion issue.
I really wasn't sure.
I'm really glad I know now where they landed.
God, and listen, it's one of those situations where, you know, as I don't know, Americans, particularly people of color and poor people, were being disenfranchised.
You know, the Democrats, they maybe gave a speech and basically leaked to the Washington Post or the Atlantic at one point that they're seriously looking into doing something.
This thing was presented with all of the hullabaloo of a person forgetting Mother's Day and picking up roses, you know, on the way home.
It got presented.
It failed.
And I just want to look very quickly and just sort of look at the wreckage, because the Democratic Party, you're absolutely right, wanted to get it on the record, which is what matters.
President Joe Biden comes out in a statement Once again, his fundamental rights are at risk at the Supreme Court.
This failure to act comes at a time when women's constitutional rights are under unprecedented attack.
And who does he blame?
Senate Republicans who blocked the passage of the Women's Health Protection Act.
Who, Nick, by the way, did he forget to mention in his statement?
Joe Manchin.
He forgot to mention Joe Manchin.
The fact that a member of the Democratic Party who has single-handedly at every turn blocked his agenda at all times.
The White House cannot bring itself to say Joe Manchin in any way shape or form has blocked anything and as a result it continues to go on because the bully pulpit is not something that the President of the United States should use.
Nor should the Democratic Party ever put any pressure on Joe Manchin.
And heaven forbid that they even look sideways at him.
And meanwhile, to the person who, unlike the sickos who host this show and the people who pay attention to all this, they keep looking at this and they say, isn't it weird?
I think that the Democrats are in control of the presidency, the House of Representatives, and the Senate.
How can they not pass things?
And this president, this administration, and this party continues to give no explanation whatsoever as to why they can't pass anything or lay the blame where it actually belongs.
It gets worse because this bill they put up forth allows the GOP to pretend that they were only against it because it went, quote unquote, too far.
Too far.
So they get to present as if, oh, we're kind of for Roe v. Wade.
We don't want to change that right now.
We just don't want, you know, this bill, which is like, which, by the way, It's the same script for every bill that the Democrats bring up.
It's too far.
It's too much spending.
All this is bullshit.
But when you think about how they're framing that argument, it's almost like, yeah, we can't expand abortion.
We can't have abortions all over the place as if women wake up in the morning and say, you know what?
The sun is out.
I'm going to go get an abortion today.
That's really what they're saying, as if that is what the decision is.
Wait, you just really butchered that sports metaphor.
handed this to them.
They put the ball on the tee, they put their finger on the ball to make sure it won't blow up and let them just kick the ball all the way in through the uprights on this one.
- Wait, you just really butchered that sports metaphor.
I'm not gonna let that go without bringing it up. - Well, I wasn't doing the Lucy and the Charlie Brown.
I was doing it with the Democrats.
They put it on a T, then all of a sudden they're like kicking it through.
It's amazing.
Yeah, right, because you don't kick off a T for a field goal.
Well, you can kick off.
We've gone too far abroad.
All right, forget it.
But meanwhile, they messed it up.
They're exactly right on that front.
They messed it right the hell up.
