=== The Biden Mental Decline Cover-Up (15:40) ===

[00:02:50]  And next up for us is my hope that my people in my profession in the media can do a better job.
[00:02:57]  The credibility of the media is vital to our country.
[00:03:01]  And today we're going to look at a case study, an example of an area that's, I think, indicative of where we are.
[00:03:08]  It's a new book, Original Sin, and it's a book by two journalists.
[00:03:12]  One is a guy named Alex Thompson, who was one of the most energetic and aggressive reporters in covering Joe Biden's mental decline.
[00:03:20]  And the other author is a guy named Jake Capper, who's an anchor at CNN.
[00:03:24]  And what I want to do today is to explain to you why this book represents a crisis and maybe, maybe an opportunity for the American media to regain credibility with the public.
[00:03:35]  This goes back to the question of Joe Biden's mental decline.
[00:03:39]  And I continue to laugh when I hear people say, we didn't know, and it wasn't, we only had a hint of it, or we saw it in the debate, but not before.
[00:03:47]  That's something reporters sometimes say and a lot of Democratic officials say.
[00:03:52]  It's a farce.
[00:03:54]  So I've covered Joe Biden and know Joe Biden for pretty much my whole career.
[00:03:58]  And in 2017, just after he left the White House, he had a book out and he was on a book tour.
[00:04:04]  And I saw him do a book event, very friendly interviewer, big crowd.
[00:04:09]  And he was a train wreck.
[00:04:12]  He was glassy-eyed.
[00:04:13]  He had trouble following the conversation.
[00:04:14]  He talked tauntingly.
[00:04:16]  Again, this is 2017, long before he ran for president in 2020.
[00:04:21]  And I said after the event, thank goodness Joe Biden's out of office.
[00:04:25]  Thank goodness he's no longer going to be in public life.
[00:04:28]  And how could his family and his advisors possibly let him go on a book tour when he was in no position to be on the public stage?
[00:04:35]  2017.
[00:04:36]  Now, I'm not a doctor.
[00:04:38]  I know Joe Biden decently well, but there are plenty of people who know him better.
[00:04:43]  I couldn't believe he ran for president in 2020.
[00:04:46]  And so to me, his mental decline was apparent in 2017.
[00:04:51]  And now what you have is a bunch of people who say it was only apparent to them on the day of the debate in the 2024 campaign.
[00:04:58]  The reason this new book is causing such an uproar, even though it's not out until next week, is because the book purports to explain the cover-up inside the White House, the cover-up inside the White House of Joe Biden's mental decline.
[00:05:12]  I don't understand how there could be a cover-up of something that was on television on a nearly nightly basis.
[00:05:17]  In either Joe Biden's performance, which was uneven, there were times when he was fine.
[00:05:20]  We've all seen people with mental decline.
[00:05:22]  We know that sometimes things are better than others.
[00:05:25]  But it was on TV every night.
[00:05:27]  And in 2020 and 2024, it was also on TV when Joe Biden wasn't there.
[00:05:32]  He was not visible.
[00:05:34]  And the ability to have credibility to cover presidents was undermined significantly from 2024 back to 2019 at least.
[00:05:44]  Today, Donald Trump, there's so many things that need scrutiny.
[00:05:47]  His acceptance of this airplane, his family's business dealings in the Middle East with the very monarchies that he's meeting with on this trip.
[00:05:56]  I could go on.
[00:05:57]  For those in this country who say the press is not doing a tough enough job scrutinizing Donald Trump, I agree.
[00:06:02]  The press should always be super tough.
[00:06:05]  But what's happened is because of the way they covered Joe Biden, the press has lost credibility with the public.
[00:06:11]  So why is this significant?
[00:06:12]  Today, this news of this new book has come leaking out, two news organizations reporting on it.
[00:06:20]  One is The Guardian, which got a copy of the book, and they report that a lot of Democrats are very unhappy that Joe Biden kept running and he should have gotten out of the race and that there was efforts to cover up for him.
[00:06:31]  Another report from Alex Thompson, who now writes for Axios, he wrote for Politico previously, says that there was discussion within the Biden camp of perhaps Biden needing a wheelchair, but he couldn't use a wheelchair during the campaign and that if he won reelection, there was talk he would use it then.
[00:06:48]  That's interesting.
[00:06:49]  Those are interesting things.
[00:06:50]  I don't doubt either of those things are true.
[00:06:53]  But it's this question of accountability, this question of did reporters do everything they could to hold Joe Biden and his team accountable for his obvious decline?
[00:07:03]  Few interviews, few press conferences, few public appearances, doing things in public, not every day, but often that showed obvious mental decline.
[00:07:12]  This wasn't something for insiders to know or whisper about the terms of the cover-up were, but the fact of Biden's decline was not a secret and the public saw it.
[00:07:22]  So these two guys have now written this book, okay?
[00:07:25]  And their publisher, aware of the criticism that's already come their way saying, how can you write a book after the election about a cover-up that we all saw with our own eyes during the campaign, made a video, a publisher making a video, not that common.
[00:07:39]  Here's a bit of the video they made trying to establish the bona fides of the two authors, Mr. Thompson and Mr. Tapper, that they were on this from the beginning.
[00:07:48]  Will you pledge that if you're elected, you will be transparent about your health, all facets of your health, with urgency so that we know.
[00:07:57]  Yes.
[00:07:57]  One poll shows that almost two-thirds of Democratic voters want a new nominee in 2024, and the top reason they gave was your age.
[00:08:05]  You know, that's not a good number for President Biden.
[00:08:08]  Two-thirds of the American people say he's not sharp enough to be president.
[00:08:10]  Yeah, I mean, how can you use the bully pulpit when you don't have a bully you can put in the pulpit?
[00:08:14]  Okay, so you're part of the 23% of adults who is not, who are not concerned about the president's ability to be president because of his age and stamina.
[00:08:22]  I mean, I know incumbents in general are not popular right now, but do you ever think maybe we should have a new candidate?
[00:08:30]  There's a little bit of denialism with the president.
[00:08:33]  This is a particularly bad week for this report and its comments about President Biden's faculties and his memory to come out because twice this week, he has acted as if he in 2021 spoke to European leaders who have been dead for years.
[00:08:48]  Part of the job of president is having the confidence of the American people in your faculties.
[00:08:53]  The White House's response every single time it has come up for three and a half years has been to deflect, to gaslight, to not tell the truth, not just to reporters, not just to other Democrats, but even at times to themselves.
[00:09:06]  So you saw, and if you're listening on the podcast, you heard there are two voices.
[00:09:09]  One is Alex Thompson, who was an aggressive reporter, as aggressive as almost any reporter in trying to figure out what was going on with Joe Biden's mental acuity and how his team was handling it.
[00:09:19]  And then you heard the voice of Jake Tapper.
[00:09:21]  And the publisher did as good a job as it could to find clips of Jake Tapper seeming to be at least interested in the topic of Joe Biden's mental decline.
[00:09:30]  So we thought, well, what are the counters to that?
[00:09:34]  Because I know that no one at CNN was particularly aggressive about this.
[00:09:38]  And I had no indication from my memory that Jake Tapper was aggressive.
[00:09:42]  So we went and looked at the full appearances, the full segments in which Jake Tapper was, in which the clips were pulled for that publisher video to ask ourselves, did the full clips demonstrate that Jake Tapper, in attitude and determination and focus, was in real time during the campaign, during Biden's presidency, interested in getting to the bottom of this.
[00:10:06]  So let's look at some of the clips from the publisher video, but beyond what they chose to include.
[00:10:13]  Here is Joe Biden's interview with Jake Tapper in 2022.
[00:10:18]  You're about to turn 80 next month.
[00:10:20]  Happy birthday ahead of time.
[00:10:22]  Whenever anyone raises concerns about your age, you're the oldest president in the history of the United States.
[00:10:27]  You always say, watch me.
[00:10:28]  Voters have been watching you.
[00:10:30]  Democratic voters approve of the job you're doing.
[00:10:33]  Democratic voters overwhelmingly like you.
[00:10:37]  But one poll shows that almost two-thirds of Democratic voters want a new nominee in 2024.
[00:10:42]  And the top reason they gave was your age.
[00:10:44]  So what's your message to Democrats who like you, who like what you've done, but are concerned about your age and the demands of the job?
[00:10:51]  Well, they're concerned about whether or not I can get anything done.
[00:10:53]  Look what I've gotten done.
[00:10:55]  Name me a president in recent history.
[00:10:57]  It's gotten as much done as I have in the first two years.
[00:10:59]  Not a joke.
[00:11:00]  You may not like what I got done, but the vast majority of the American people do like what I got done.
[00:11:05]  So he wished them happy birthday.
[00:11:07]  He asked them about one poll.
[00:11:08]  He's not asking him about what was already in evidence then, which is mental decline.
[00:11:14]  He's simply saying there's a poll that says Democrats don't like you.
[00:11:17]  So I look at that and I say, that's not the way I would have asked it.
[00:11:20]  That's not a guy who was determined to get beyond just asking about a poll.
[00:11:24]  That's a guy who want to wish that president a happy birthday.
[00:11:27]  All right.
[00:11:28]  Here's another clip.
[00:11:29]  This is again from another interview that the public, another appearance the publisher included.
[00:11:32]  This is the White House press secretary and Jake Tapper asking her a question.
[00:11:37]  Again, this is from the same segment that the publisher used to prove that Jake Tapper was serious about getting to the bottom of this cover-up.
[00:11:44]  That's what I'm saying.
[00:11:45]  That's the 77% who are concerned.
[00:11:47]  No, no, no.
[00:11:48]  I've had conversations with some of your colleagues in the White House Press Corps when we travel abroad, how it is hard for us to keep up with this president who is constantly, constantly working every day to get things done and making sure that we are delivering for the American people.
[00:12:04]  And that's what, and I think that's what matters.
[00:12:06]  I get it.
[00:12:07]  I get what you're asking me.
[00:12:08]  But the record matters too, Jake.
[00:12:10]  What he's been able to do, no other president has been able to do if you look at his legislative record.
[00:12:16]  What did the White House do to try to control the press, to keep them from asking a compliant and pliant press?
[00:12:21]  One is they privately called them and browbeat them and said, do not cover this.
[00:12:25]  If you cover this, you'll be cut off.
[00:12:26]  I don't know if they did that to Jake Capper or not, but they also did what she did there in public.
[00:12:31]  They said things that were ridiculous.
[00:12:33]  Oh, he runs circles around us.
[00:12:35]  He's tireless.
[00:12:36]  I mean, look at his schedule.
[00:12:39]  By the time that interview had occurred, there were many instances of the president having a very light schedule on overseas trips, canceling events with foreign leaders.
[00:12:47]  They say, well, he always did his job and he did his job great.
[00:12:50]  No, he canceled events and he had a very light schedule.
[00:12:53]  So here again, he asked the pro form a question.
[00:12:56]  She bats it away with one of their usual lines of spin.
[00:12:59]  Oh, he's so energetic.
[00:13:00]  He runs circles around the younger staff.
[00:13:02]  There's no evidence of it.
[00:13:03]  It's a made-up piece of spin and he seemed to accept it there.
[00:13:07]  Here's another example, again, drawn from the same appearance that the publisher used to prove that Jake Tapper was tough.
[00:13:13]  And this is with another Biden spokesperson, Kate Bettingfield, who, by the way, was a CNN consultant.
[00:13:18]  So she's being paid by CNN to spend for Joe Biden with her colleagues with whom she shares a green room and everything else.
[00:13:25]  This is from February of 2024, shortly before everything went south for Joe Biden.
[00:13:30]  So this memory issue is already out there.
[00:13:34]  But I want to know how many voters in Michigan, Wisconsin, you think know the difference between whether someone is naming Emmanuel Macron or Francois Mitterrand, whose name they probably don't even know.
[00:13:56]  Here is perhaps the biggest tell of all.
[00:13:58]  If you're a reporter and you are determined to get to the bottom of this, if you think there may be a cover-up at the highest levels of the government, a potential constitutional crisis, you would not treat Biden officials with humor or lightness.
[00:14:10]  You would be tough and determined to get to the bottom of it.
[00:14:14]  You don't ask about in the context of polls, which is the way he mostly asked about it.
[00:14:18]  You don't accept spin that voters don't care.
[00:14:21]  If you really are concerned about getting to the bottom of this, you ask the question.
[00:14:25]  This is so funny I even have to say this.
[00:14:27]  You ask the question about specific incidents and how they would explain it.
[00:14:32]  And the one I always come back to is when there was an event in honor of a congresswoman who had passed away and Joe Biden tried to speak to her as if she were alive and there.
[00:14:42]  Okay.
[00:14:42]  That's not confusing the names of two European leaders.
[00:14:45]  That's not knowing which way to walk off the stage.
[00:14:48]  That's not having your first public event at noon.
[00:14:50]  That's not not doing events at night.
[00:14:53]  That is right in plain sight.
[00:14:55]  And to ask about it the way he did in that appearance and to accept her spin that voters don't care, again, welcome to do it if that's what you want to do.
[00:15:04]  But to do that and then write a book saying I was determined to get to the bottom of it.
[00:15:09]  This is what is, this is, I don't mean to just pick on Jake Tapper, but he's the one who wrote the book.
[00:15:14]  This is where every reporter, practically every reporter is.
[00:15:18]  They engaged in the lightest questioning, the lightest possible questioning, and then accepted the bullying, accepted the spin.
[00:15:28]  And again, again, they acted as if now Jake Tapper is acting as if he had been determined to get to the bottom of it.
[00:15:35]  All right.
[00:15:36]  This is from 2020, okay?
[00:15:38]  Right before the 2020 election, Lara Trump, President Trump's daughter-in-law, did an interview with Jake Tapper.
[00:15:46]  And watch how indignant he gets at the mere suggestion that Joe Biden, who's doing his Delaware basement campaign, has suffered mental decline.
[00:15:55]  Please roll 109.
[00:15:57]  Every time he comes on stage or they turn to him, I'm like, Joe, can you get it out?
[00:16:01]  Let's get the words out, Joe.
[00:16:03]  You kind of feel bad for him.
[00:16:05]  How do you think it makes little kids with stutters feel when they see you make a comment like that?
[00:16:11]  First and foremost, I had no idea that Joe Biden ever suffered from a stutter.
[00:16:17]  I think what we see on stage with Joe Biden, Jake, is very clearly a cognitive decline.
[00:16:23]  That's what I'm referring to.
[00:16:24]  It makes me uncomfortable.
[00:16:25]  You are no absolutely.
[00:16:28]  It's so amazing.
[00:16:29]  It's so amazing to me that you're trying to tell me that what I was suggesting was that you're not afraid of Joe Biden.
[00:16:38]  Yeah, I think you were mocking his stutter.
[00:16:39]  And I think you have absolutely no standing to diagnose somebody's cognitive decline.
[00:16:44]  I would think that somebody in the Trump family would be more sensitive to people who do not have medical licenses diagnosing politicians from afar.
[00:16:55]  Plenty of people have diagnosed your father from afar.
[00:16:57]  And I'm sure it offends you, your father-in-law from afar.
[00:17:00]  I'm sure it offends you.
[00:17:01]  You don't have any standing to say.
[00:17:03]  I'm not diagnosing him.
[00:17:04]  What I'm saying, Jake.
[00:17:05]  You just talked about a cognitive decline.
[00:17:07]  That Joe Biden has been aware of.
[00:17:08]  I have one last question for you, Laura.
[00:17:09]  You can't be.
[00:17:11]  And it's very concerning to a lot of people that this could be the leader of the free world.
[00:17:16]  That is all I'm saying.
[00:17:17]  I genuinely believe that I'm sorry for Joe Biden.
[00:17:20]  I appreciate it.
[00:17:20]  I'm sure.
[00:17:20]  Yeah.
[00:17:21]  So he indignantly cuts off the interview.
[00:17:22]  She's not a doctor.
[00:17:23]  Jake's not a doctor.
[00:17:24]  I'm not a doctor.
[00:17:25]  But I talked to a lot of doctors in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024.
[00:17:35]  And many of them said, look, I don't usually diagnose people from afar, but obviously there's mental and cognitive decline.
[00:17:42]  He criticized her and cut her off, and I think was a little rude to her with indignity, saying, how dare you say that you're in a position to say the guy has mental decline?
[00:17:53]  Well, guess what?
[00:17:54]  Now that Jake Capper has written a book about this, he says right in the publicity material for the book that there was this mental decline that was so apparent and that there was this big cover-up in the White House.
[00:18:04]  Now, I give them credit for pointing out the cover-up in the White House because that was not aggressively covered because anytime anyone tried to do it, they were threatened and bullied and spun in public, and most reporters just gave up.
[00:18:18]  But you cannot be part of restoring the credibility of the media to cover Donald Trump aggressively if your posture is, oh, we did nothing wrong.
[00:18:26]  We aggressively covered it or worse in some ways, we didn't even see it.

=== Media Silence on Truth (07:10) ===

[00:18:31]  How could we have seen it?
[00:18:32]  We weren't in these private meetings.
[00:18:33]  The cover-up was so intense.
[00:18:35]  I'll say again, Joe Biden's decline was not uniform.
[00:18:39]  There were days when he was just fine.
[00:18:41]  So Republicans who say he was 100% gone and weekend at Bernie's and someone else was running the government, that's not true.
[00:18:47]  But his decline was pronounced.
[00:18:49]  There's a reason why he had a light schedule.
[00:18:51]  He didn't talk to reporters.
[00:18:53]  And there's a reason why all these things that happened in public that we all saw were ignored by the press because they didn't want to help Donald Trump win.
[00:19:01]  They didn't want to be blamed if he won again.
[00:19:03]  It's one of the most embarrassing things I've seen.
[00:19:05]  So this morning, I'm reading Politico, their daily tip sheet, the Politico playbook.
[00:19:11]  And this is what they write.
[00:19:13]  And it's amazing to me that this is still being, this is still the way the press, which defended and protected Joe Biden, is framing things.
[00:19:20]  For what it's worth, Biden has continued to deny any suggestion that he experienced cognitive decline while in office.
[00:19:28]  They are wrong, the former president said in an interview last week on The View.
[00:19:32]  There is nothing to sustain that.
[00:19:34]  I mean, I get letting Joe Biden have his say, but for what it's worth, Joe Biden has continued to deny any suggestion he experienced cognitive decline.
[00:19:43]  I mean, how could they write that?
[00:19:46]  How could they credit that?
[00:19:47]  It makes no sense, but it's the mindset that most every reporter, not Alex Thompson, but his co-author, and again, almost every reporter that's now being asked with the authority and the responsibility of covering Donald Trump to be to be responsible for that.
[00:20:05]  It's the same line.
[00:20:06]  So Jake Tapper, his book coming out in a week, here he is this morning on CNN creating a whole new set of realities.
[00:20:14]  Watch this.
[00:20:16]  You have an entire White House press corps, though, following him around.
[00:20:20]  And I'm just curious as to whether or not this kind of trying to hide what was happening with the president at the time had an impact on the press corps.
[00:20:30]  I'm like, why didn't we hear some of these details from what they actually saw and were dealing with trying to get information?
[00:20:39]  Well, Alex Thompson and I were on the case, as were lots of other reporters, trying to figure out what was going on behind the scenes.
[00:20:47]  But the bottom line is the White House was lying, not only to the press, not only to the public, but they were lying to members of their own cabinet.
[00:20:54]  They were lying to White House staffers.
[00:20:56]  They were lying to Democratic members of Congress, to donors about how bad things had gotten.
[00:21:03]  And in fact, Alex and I started writing this book after the election of 2024.
[00:21:09]  And we spoke with more than 200 people, most of whom, almost all of whom were Democrats, and almost all of whom wouldn't be honest with us or wouldn't be candid with us until after the election.
[00:21:20]  And then after the election, we found out all of these things that when you looked at what was going on with President Biden at the time, it probably doesn't surprise you the extent to which he was deteriorating.
[00:21:32]  But now we have anecdotes and facts about what was really going on behind the scenes with details that Democrats wouldn't share with us until after Election Day.
[00:21:40]  All right.
[00:21:40]  Again, amazing.
[00:21:42]  True.
[00:21:42]  Here's something true that he said, that Jake Tapper said on CNN this morning.
[00:21:46]  True that there was a cover-up, that senior Biden officials worked very hard to cover up as much as they could his decline, including amongst other people in the government and in the campaign.
[00:21:57]  That's true.
[00:21:58]  Here's two things that are not true, okay?
[00:22:01]  And this is where the credibility is just so important that people be honest.
[00:22:05]  I shouldn't be the only one in the media being honest about this.
[00:22:08]  It's bizarre, okay?
[00:22:10]  One thing that's not true is that you needed, that the cover-up was so good that no one could see this, that we couldn't possibly have gotten to the bottom of this during the election.
[00:22:23]  Again, it makes me mental.
[00:22:25]  It was clear.
[00:22:26]  I saw it with my own eyes in 2017 at a public event with hundreds of people.
[00:22:31]  You saw it almost every day, not every day, but almost every day, both in what he did and the fact that he had such a limited schedule.
[00:22:38]  So it is not true that it's only after the election that Jake Tapper could have gotten to the bottom of this and the rest of the Washington Press Corps could have gotten to the bottom of it.
[00:22:46]  The other thing that's not true is that the press is blameless because they were more than just stymied in the telling of Jake Tapper.
[00:22:54]  They were stymied from getting to the truth.
[00:22:57]  No, they weren't.

[00:23:18]  The New York Post lost access because they covered the Hunter Biden story.
[00:23:23]  Reporters who covered any story the Biden people didn't like were denied access.
[00:23:27]  Does it sound familiar?
[00:23:28]  A White House denying access to the press when they don't like what's written or said.
[00:23:32]  This is a crisis.
[00:23:33]  The book's going to come out.
[00:23:35]  Conservatives online are already criticizing it along the same lines I am.
[00:23:39]  But this should not be a red-blue thing where the Democrats pretend that the book is on the up and up and the press pretends the book is on the up and up and they're criticized by red people on Axe and elsewhere.
[00:23:51]  That shouldn't be the way this goes because the true story, the true story of what happened, whatever the book reveals about the cover-up within the administration, the true story is that that video that the publisher put together to try to show Jake Capper in the best light, the best light about how aggressive he was before the election, that's wheat tea.
[00:24:14]  But it becomes even more watered down when you show the full context of what he said in those very appearances and elsewhere.
[00:24:22]  People treated it like a political story, like a polling story, like a partisan story.
[00:24:26]  That's not what this was.
[00:24:28]  If you want an America where the press corps can hold Donald Trump accountable, he's the current president, hold Donald Trump accountable.
[00:24:35]  You want an America where this book is an opportunity not for Jake Capper to make money and his co-author to make money.
[00:24:42]  It's an opportunity for the press, every organization that participated in the cover-up to come clean and to say what, again, is so obvious, I shouldn't have to say it.
[00:24:52]  It was clear that Joe Biden had cognitive decline.
[00:24:55]  It was clear that it was bun and covered up and bullying tactics were used.
[00:25:01]  It was clear that people who didn't say it aloud had a partisan interest in not saying it aloud and that that included the media, which didn't say a word, not because they couldn't see it, but because they didn't want to be accused of helping Donald Trump win.
[00:25:14]  I want this to be an opportunity to come clean because if we don't now, I'm not sure what other opportunity people will take.

[00:29:13]  So Dylan Mulvaney was getting lambasted, raked over the coals for this Bud Light scandal.

[00:29:19]  Bud Light, they're the ones who strayed from their core competencies.
[00:29:23]  Bud Light, they're the ones who decided to send all these cans to a man in a dress who mocks women for a living, because that's what Dylan Mulvaney does.

[00:29:33]  He was posting these videos saying, oh, I chipped a nail.
[00:29:35]  I'm having a bad day.
[00:29:37]  I must be a girl.
[00:29:37]  This is what womanhood is like.

[00:29:42]  There are strong, incredible women producing the show right now behind the camera.

[00:29:56]  I was raised by a strong, independent woman.
