The Megyn Kelly Show - 20250307_trumps-tariff-shake-up-newsoms-surprising-pivot-ce Aired: 2025-03-07 Duration: 15:05 === Tariffs, Sports, and Party Lines (12:36) === [00:00:02] Good morning, everyone. [00:00:12] I've been saying it for a long time. [00:00:14] President Trump temporarily pausing some tariffs on Mexico, but promising the relief stops for every country come April 2nd. [00:00:21] China publicly challenges Trump's tariff threats, but what's really happening behind the scenes? [00:00:26] So that's easy to call out the unfairness of that. [00:00:29] California Governor Gavin Newsom breaking ranks with Democrats, calling boys and girls' sports unfair. [00:00:35] Is the sudden dose of common sense a sign of larger political ambitions? [00:00:39] Texas Congressman Al Green censured for his outburst, but that's not the end of the story. [00:00:45] Dozens of other Democrats now at risk of losing their committee assignments. [00:00:49] All that and more coming up in just a moment on your AM update. [00:00:55] When it comes to grocery shopping and meal planning, it's often stressful and time consuming. [00:02:06] All Mexican goods under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement signed under the first Trump administration to replace NAFTA granted reprieve. [00:02:15] President Trump posting to Truth Social, quote, I did this as an accommodation and out of respect for President Scheinbaum. [00:02:22] Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard together on the border, both in terms of stopping illegal aliens from entering the United States and likewise stopping fentanyl. [00:02:33] The markets continuing to slide in reaction to the back and forth actions. [00:02:37] President Trump reacting to the market drop from the Oval. [00:02:40] Well, a lot of them are globalist countries and companies that won't be doing as well because we're taking back things that have been taken from us many years ago. [00:02:51] We've been treated very unfairly as a country. [00:02:54] We protect everybody. [00:02:56] We do everything for all these countries. [00:02:58] And a lot of these are globalist in nature. [00:03:01] You know, they have, if you're outside of the United States, it's going to be a little bit different. [00:03:06] We just weren't treated right. [00:03:07] We were ripped off as a country. [00:03:09] I've been saying it for a long time. [00:03:11] Democrats highly critical of the tariffs, arguing the economic uncertainty is harming their constituents. [00:03:17] His tariffs on allies like Canada will raise prices on energy, lumber, and cars. [00:03:22] Average American families can expect that these Trump tariffs are going to cost them about $2,000 annually. [00:03:29] So considering President Rand on a platform of bringing down costs, he seems to be doing exactly the opposite. [00:03:35] Trump started this. [00:03:36] This is not only going to put pain and suffering for Canadian families. [00:03:41] It's also going to be for Minnesota families and families all across the United States. [00:03:45] Public support for tariffs falling along party lines. [00:03:48] An economist YouGov poll showing 68% of Republicans support a 25% tariff on Mexico versus only 11% of Democrats. [00:03:58] On CNBC, Commerce Secretary Howard Luttnick pressed about the seemingly chaotic thinking of the White House. [00:04:04] First, the tariffs were announced, then paused, then implemented, now paused again in some capacity. [00:04:10] Are you unsure of what President Trump wants? [00:04:13] I speak to him all the time. [00:04:15] You've got to be kidding me. [00:04:16] The president knows exactly what he wants. [00:04:18] We know exactly what he wants. [00:04:20] And our job is to try to execute exactly what he wants. [00:04:23] You communicated fully with your counterparts in Mexico and Canada, for example. [00:04:27] Exactly what the president wants, I assume. [00:04:30] Like yesterday and the day before yesterday. [00:04:33] Of course. [00:04:34] Like, come on. [00:04:35] Mr. Luttnick telling NBC this month it's all about fentanyl. [00:04:39] But beginning April 2nd, attention turns to busting down trade barriers throughout the world, especially with China. [00:04:46] At the Economic Club of New York, Treasury Secretary Scott Besson laying out the Fuller strategy with President Trump's upcoming tariff wars. [00:04:54] I know it's what President Trump believes. [00:04:57] He believes three things. [00:04:58] One, it is a good source of revenues. [00:05:02] Two, it protects our important industries and the employees. [00:05:06] And three, he's added a third leg to the stool and he uses it for negotiating. [00:05:11] The popular argument against the Trump tariffs, even from right-wing economists, is their attacks on American consumers and increased costs on American businesses. [00:05:21] Economist Vance Ginn, who worked in the OMB in the first Trump administration, writing in the Courier Journal, quote, a trade deficit is not a sign of economic weakness. [00:05:31] It reflects strong capital inflows and consumer purchasing power. [00:05:35] Trying to fix it with tariffs only distorts markets and raises costs. [00:05:40] President Trump argues that global free trade doesn't really exist because countries like China with authoritarian governments don't play fair. [00:05:49] More from Secretary Besson. [00:05:51] We can accumulate all of the strategic mineral deposits that we need, but China still processes 85%, does 85% of the processing. [00:06:01] And every time a plant, every time a private sector company tries to stand up a processing facility outside of China, China drops their prices and puts them out of business. [00:06:15] There are several in the United States that are just sitting idle because the Chinese saw what was happening and dropped it, and that's unacceptable. [00:06:25] The U.S. is the largest importer in the world, purchasing 4.1 trillion worth of goods and services last year from everywhere else. [00:06:33] Mr. Trump believes the U.S. can leverage that massive purchasing power to force other countries to bend to his will. [00:06:40] Americans have a lot of money to spend. [00:06:42] If you want access to this market, you either deal with a tariff or build your factory here. [00:06:47] Secretary Luttnick spells it out on CNBC. [00:06:50] If you want to buy things from other countries and you want to bring it into America, then the price is going to rise. [00:06:57] But if you make it here, then of course the price won't rise. [00:07:02] So make it here. [00:07:03] It's an Apple who builds it all in China. [00:07:06] Why are they building it all in China and giving us our iPhone? [00:07:09] Why don't they make it here? [00:07:10] Wages are lower over there. [00:07:13] And now there are robots who can do it. [00:07:15] You're going to see robotic production of iPhones and the jobs that are going to be created. [00:07:22] These are great, high-paying jobs, and you don't need a college education to do it. [00:07:27] This is the recreation of tradecraft in the United States of America. [00:07:32] And Donald Trump is on it. [00:07:34] He's bringing it back. [00:07:35] Publicly, the Chinese are responding to tariff threats with bravado. [00:07:39] A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman saying late Tuesday, if war is what the U.S. wants, be it a tariff war, a trade war, or any other type of war, we're ready to fight to the end. [00:07:50] The Wall Street Journal reporting behind the scenes, China's worried they can't win a trade war. [00:07:56] The journal writing, quote, the vision haunting Xi is one where China finds itself cut off by trade restrictions and sanctions, suffering Soviet-style isolation with fewer outlets for its goods and limited access to crucial technologies. [00:08:11] China's economy depends on U.S. demand. [00:08:13] Last year, the U.S. imported $439 billion worth of goods from China, one of their top sources of revenue. [00:08:20] Losing that access would not just hurt, it could destabilize China's economic foundation, and that's what President Trump is gambling on. [00:08:29] Coming up, California Governor Gavin Newsom bucks his party and actually agrees that biological males playing against girls in sports is unfair. [00:08:39] What? [00:08:40] What's behind this sudden dose of common sense? [00:08:42] And the censure of Texas Congressman Al Green may only be the start of the fallout resulting from his outburst at President Trump's joint address. [00:08:53] You might have heard about the new brand called XXXY Athletics. [00:08:56] They're the only athletic brand that is standing up for women's sports. [00:09:00] It was founded by former elite gymnast and longtime Levi's executive Jennifer Say. [00:09:04] Jennifer was the first gymnast to speak out about the abuse in women's gymnastics. [00:09:09] And then she pushed back on lockdowns and closed schools during COVID. [00:09:12] And for that, she was canceled by corporate America. [00:09:15] So she started her own brand, XXXY Athletics. [00:09:18] And this is the only athletic brand that actually knows men cannot become women. [00:09:21] Amazing. [00:09:22] And the fight is not over, folks. [00:09:23] The brand's not a gimmick. [00:09:24] They make world-class products, including super soft sweats and performance wear, including leggings and workout tees that hold up to the toughest workouts. [00:09:33] Go to thetruthfits.com to check it out. [00:09:35] Use the code MK20, and that'll get you 20% off. [00:09:39] Thetruthfits.com and the code MK20. [00:09:42] Support brands that align with your values. [00:09:45] Thetruthfits.com, code MK20. [00:09:51] California Governor Gavin Newsom breaking ranks with fellow Democrats on the debate over transgender participation in sports. [00:09:58] The governor joined by conservative Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk in the first episode of his new podcast, weighing in on the issue. [00:10:05] Would you do something like that? [00:10:07] Would you say no men in female sports? [00:10:08] Well, I think it's an issue of fairness. [00:10:10] I completely agree with you on that. [00:10:11] So that's easy to call out the unfairness of that. [00:10:14] The governor's policies when it comes to so-called trans children have been downright radical. [00:10:19] Last week, every single Senate Democrat voted against advancing the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, a bill banning men's participation in women's sports. [00:10:29] A January New York Times poll shows 70% of Democrats are against allowing biological males into women's leagues. [00:10:37] House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who also voted against the bill, stumbled in his response to Governor Newsom's new stance. [00:10:45] I want to ask about California Governor Gavin Newsom's comments saying that Democrats were in the wrong for allowing transgender athletes to compete in female and girls sports. [00:10:56] What is your response to that after Democrats had opposed the women and girls women's sports? [00:11:00] I haven't seen his comments. [00:11:05] What Democrats opposed was unleashing sexual predators on girls throughout the United States of America. [00:11:16] Reaction from Governor Newsom's fellow Democrats ranging from anger to disappointment. [00:11:20] A joint statement from the leaders of the California Assembly and State Senate LGBTQ caucus saying, quote, we woke up profoundly sickened and frustrated by these remarks. [00:11:30] It's not the first time in recent weeks the governor rejected far-left policies. [00:11:34] In February, Mr. Newsom vowed to veto a bill banning California prisons from cooperating with ICE. [00:11:40] The moderate pivot, leaving many suspicious that Governor Newsom is eyeing a title bump come 2028. [00:11:51] Democrat Congressman from Texas Al Green officially censured by the House of Representatives for his outburst during President Trump's joint address. [00:11:59] 10 Democrats joining with Republicans to reprimand the congressman in a final vote of 224 to 198. [00:12:08] Just 10 Democrats. [00:12:10] Once the censure resolution is passed, the offending party is to stand before the chamber while the resolution is read. [00:12:17] A group of several dozen Dems staging a protest of their own. [00:12:22] Representative Al Green, be censured with public reading of this resolution by the Speaker. === Censure Resolution for Al Green (02:26) === [00:12:39] The House had come to order. [00:12:40] The House had come to order. [00:12:42] That cacophony drowning out Speaker Johnson, an attempt at singing the civil rights anthem, We Shall Overcome. [00:12:50] Congressman Green standing front and center, waving his cane like a conductor. [00:12:54] Speaker Johnson banging the gavel multiple times, eventually forced to call a recess. [00:12:59] In response, Republican Congressman from Tennessee, Andy Ogles, filing a resolution to remove participating Democrats from their committee assignments. [00:13:07] Mr. Ogles posting on X, quote, if you want to act like a child in the halls of Congress, you will be treated like a child. [00:13:14] The House Freedom Caucus filing a similar resolution against Congressman Green, seeking to oust him from his committee assignments as well. [00:13:22] A vote on that is expected next week. [00:13:24] The speaker has not yet commented. [00:13:29] Liberal darling Lynn-Manuel Miranda pulling musical Hamilton from its upcoming run at the Kennedy Center. [00:13:36] The move comes in response to President Trump's dismissal of the entire board and his naming of staunch ally Rick Grinnell as its interim executive director. [00:13:44] Mr. Grinnell tasked with ensuring the Kennedy Center promotes values aligning with the America First vision. [00:13:50] Mr. Miranda, along with lead producer Jeffrey Seller, telling the New York Times the show must not go on. [00:13:57] Mr. Seller stating, quote, it became untenable for us to participate in an organization that had become so deeply politicized. [00:14:05] The Kennedy Center opening in 1971 to serve as the national cultural center of the U.S. In 2024, there were at least three drag events hosted in the space. [00:14:16] In 2019, the center named Mark Bamuthi Joseph, Vice President and Artistic Director of Social Impact. [00:14:24] In 2017, prior to that appointment, the Kennedy Center commissioned Mr. Joseph to write the play Pelota. [00:14:30] The Boston Globe called that show, quote, a poetic and impassioned meditation on race, on racism, and on the experience of immigration. [00:14:39] Rick Grinnell responding to Lynn Manuel Miranda on X, quote, This is a publicity stunt that will backfire. [00:14:45] It's clear he and Seller don't want Republicans going to their shows. [00:14:50] Americans see you, Lynn. [00:14:54] And that'll do it for your AM update. [00:14:56] I'm Megan Kelly.
