[00:00:47]  Hey, everyone, I'm Megan Kelly.
[00:00:49]  Welcome to the Megan Kelly Show and the conclusion of Broad Week.
[00:00:54]  I have a story that I need to share with you.
[00:00:56]  It's one I've never told publicly before.
[00:00:59]  And to do it right, it took virtually my entire family on my husband's side.
[00:01:05]  January 22, 2021.
[00:01:08]  Much of the world is still shut down due to COVID.
[00:01:10]  Our family is still living in Manhattan and getting ready to travel south for the weekend for my nephew's wedding.
[00:01:17]  As I pack up that Friday, my husband Doug calls, relaying that he has just heard from his then 84-year-old mother, Jackie, in Philadelphia.
[00:01:26]  She's received a disturbing phone call from her daughter, Diane.
[00:01:31]  Diane and her partner Brad are oyster fishermen on Cape Cod.
[00:01:37]  She was hysterical, sobbing, and couldn't complete a full sentence, but she said that she was in jail on a drunk driving charge and that she needed to get talked to somebody that she had a telephone number, and they were going to talk to me about getting bail.
[00:02:07]  And this was on a Friday, which I don't know.
[00:02:13]  Anyway, I didn't know much of anything, but I kept asking her if she was all right.
[00:02:22]  And I just didn't know what to do.
[00:02:28]  And she just said, I'm so scared.
[00:02:31]  I'm terrified.
[00:02:33]  And I asked her where Brad was.
[00:02:39]  And she said, well, he's in jail too.
[00:02:46]  But she said, I don't really have time.
[00:02:49]  They're not giving me long to talk.
[00:02:52]  You need to call this number.
[00:02:55]  So, what did you do next?
[00:02:57]  I called the number.
[00:03:00]  And he told me that the court was closed on Friday and it was COVID, so they had limited times when you could get in.
[00:03:16]  And he told me to call this lawyer whose name I can't remember.
[00:03:24]  And he would walk me through getting the bail money.
[00:03:30]  So, this was the court that you were talking to, saying you need to talk to a lawyer.
[00:03:36]  Here's a number you can call.
[00:03:39]  Yes.
[00:03:40]  And then did you call the lawyer?
[00:03:43]  I did.
[00:03:44]  I asked him why is she there on a drunk driving charge when she doesn't drive when she doesn't drink?
[00:03:57]  And he said, well, she told me she didn't drink and I believed her.
[00:04:02]  So I've sent off a talk screen or, you know, I've sent off for a blood test.
[00:04:10]  I didn't know why Brad was.
[00:04:13]  And at once, either the court told me or the lawyer told that Brad was in because he assaulted a policeman at the scene of the accident.
[00:04:25]  The lawyer told Jackie the bail for both of them was 17,000 bucks.
[00:04:30]  I said, well, I just don't have that kind of cash to, I don't have that kind of money to give you.
[00:04:37]  I said, I'm going to have, I'm going to call my son.
[00:04:41]  And she did.
[00:04:42]  And that's where her son, my husband, Doug Brunt, comes in.
[00:04:45]  I was in the car and my mom called and she was distressed and agitated and frustrated saying that she had just gotten off the phone with Diane and Diane had been in a car accident.
[00:04:56]  She broke her nose and she was hysterically bawling from basically the holding cell at the jail on Cape Cod and that she had this one phone call to make.
[00:05:06]  So she had called my mom, but she needed to be bailed out.
[00:05:09]  Both she and Brad had been arrested.
[00:05:10]  So I'm asking my mom a bunch of questions.
[00:05:12]  You know, what the heck happened?
[00:05:14]  And she was telling me as best she could because it was a short phone call and apparently Diane was, you know, sobbing through her broken nose about what had happened.
[00:05:22]  But in short, a car accident, she broke her nose in the car accident.
[00:05:27]  They, the police came, they thought that she had been drinking and driving.
[00:05:32]  The police got aggressive with Diane.
[00:05:34]  In response to that, Brad got aggressive with the police to defend Diane and they arrested them both.
[00:05:40]  And so they're now in jail in Cape Cod.
[00:05:43]  Diane gave my mom this phone number to call, who was her court appointed lawyer.
[00:05:48]  And my mom had already spoken with this lawyer.
[00:05:51]  She gives me the number saying it's very confusing.
[00:05:54]  You know, all of this was happening during COVID.
[00:05:55]  And so he had these reasons why the court was about to close.
[00:05:59]  It was a Friday afternoon.
[00:06:00]  It closes early on Fridays now due to COVID.
[00:06:02]  Nobody's even in there due to COVID.
[00:06:05]  And we need to rush $17,000 over to the court or else Diane and Brad are going to spend the full weekend in jail.
[00:06:13]  And, you know, everything's going to shut down over the weekend.
[00:06:15]  So they're in there unless we can somehow get the money to bail them out.
[00:06:18]  And we had something like a two-hour timeframe.
[00:06:21]  Right.
[00:06:21]  So I remember you called me.
[00:06:24]  You call me and you say.
[00:06:25]  I'm like, honey, handle this.
[00:06:27]  Yeah.
[00:06:27]  Basically, and I was like, where's Abby?
[00:06:31]  Abby, we need you.
[00:06:33]  So we were like, wait, this is impossible, first of all, because like the audience doesn't know Diane and Brad, but they are the nicest, kindest, most upstanding, cool people.
[00:06:44]  Like these are not even potentially drunk driving lunatics to attack the cops.
[00:06:48]  They're not.
[00:06:49]  I mean, I think if someone got aggressive with Diane, I could see Brad stepping in.
[00:06:53]  That made some sense.
[00:06:54]  But otherwise, none of it was in character.
[00:06:57]  The only thing that gave us pause was it was COVID.
[00:07:02]  Things were nuts.
[00:07:03]  Everyone was behaving bizarrely.
[00:07:05]  So there really was a piece that was like, did they have some sort of a meltdown?
[00:07:09]  Did something like what it was so bizarre.
[00:07:11]  So my mom gave me the phone number.
[00:07:13]  I call the lawyer.
[00:07:14]  He was explaining he needs $17,000 in cash.
[00:07:18]  He reiterates much of what my mom told me, which is the window is closing.
[00:07:23]  It's, you know, due to COVID protocols, the whole thing shuts down at, you know, four o'clock on a Friday and it goes dark for the weekend.
[00:07:30]  So we have only this amount of time to get them out of, you know, the holding cell.
[00:07:34]  So, you know, can you get $17,000 in cash to Cape Cod right now?
[00:07:39]  And I'm thinking, I can't get myself to Cape Cod in two hours, let alone $17,000 in cash.
[00:07:44]  So you and I start scrambling for ideas to how to deal with this.
[00:07:47]  Right.
[00:07:47]  So we're like, and it's not that easy to get $17,000 cash like that.
[00:07:52]  So I'm trying to figure out how to get the money.
[00:07:54]  And you're talking to your mom, trying to call him your mom down.
[00:07:56]  You're calling your brothers, letting them know what's happening with DAI.
[00:08:00]  Everybody's like, my God, this is a nightmare.
[00:08:02]  And what was the next thing that happened?
[00:08:04]  I'm trying to remember the next step in the chain.
[00:08:06]  We were scrambling around to try to get money.
[00:08:08]  We were talking to the lawyer.
[00:08:09]  We'd ask him questions, like, you know, what is a way we can do this?
[00:08:12]  And we had the idea to call Diane Brad's friend in Cape Cod, who has sort of a whale-watching business.
[00:08:22]  He has a number of big charter boats where you can go out and watch the whales off Provincetown.
[00:08:27]  Which we've done with him before.
[00:08:28]  Which we've done with it.
[00:08:28]  Yeah, so Steve.
[00:08:30]  And so we call Steve, who thank God picks up the phone and we get him up to speed on the problem.
[00:08:37]  Here's that friend, Steve, from Cape Cod.
[00:08:39]  Apparently, this needed to be done locally.
[00:08:42]  So Doug called me because I'm a close friend of both Brad and Diane's.
[00:08:49]  It was a pretty large sum, and he said that I'd be reimbursed after we got him out.
[00:08:55]  But because it was a weekend, things couldn't be done normally.
[00:08:59]  So then we call back to Laura and say, We've got someone on the ground on the Cape with the cash.
[00:09:05]  Where do we go?
[00:09:06]  He says, Actually, I'm not there now.
[00:09:09]  So there's no one to receive the cash.
[00:09:11]  So he pivoted to saying you can use cryptocurrency because of, again, COVID.
[00:09:17]  The courts will accept in these extreme circumstances, the corps will actually accept cryptocurrency.
[00:09:23]  And he was saying he was going to give us a wire to send it directly to the court.
[00:09:26]  There was a phone to the court.
[00:09:27]  We could call the court.
[00:09:28]  And they had, you know, they matched up case numbers.
[00:09:30]  And we did call the court.
[00:09:31]  Yeah.
[00:09:32]  We called the court.
[00:09:33]  We dialed the number and that the lawyer had given us.
[00:09:37]  We had an official person answer.
[00:09:40]  We were put on hold.
[00:09:41]  They asked us for the case number.
[00:09:42]  We gave them the case number.
[00:09:43]  They looked it up.
[00:09:44]  They said Diane and Brad, they had their names and they verified everything that we had been told thus far.
[00:09:50]  When we come back, what happened to Brad and Diane?
[00:09:54]  Thankfully, Steve was on the case.
[00:10:00]  We are picking up my conversation with Doug about what happened as soon as we got the instructions on how to get the crypto delivered.
[00:10:10]  So I remember you were in Manhattan at the time.
[00:10:13]  So I guess he went online and found locations where they have crypto kiosks where you can basically insert cash and it comes out on the other end as cryptocurrency.
[00:10:22]  So that's our next plan.
[00:10:24]  But at this point, we're like, this is nuts.
[00:10:26]  This is very sketchy.
[00:10:28]  But I still thought, you know, going back to what we know, Diane's still in jail.
[00:10:35]  It was like, maybe there's a sketchy lawyer involved, but really we were like, Diane and Brad are in trouble.
[00:10:39]  Yeah.
[00:10:39]  And we've got to find a way of helping them.
[00:10:41]  And thank God that you enlisted Steve.
[00:10:44]  Yeah.
[00:10:44]  So when we call Steve, we say, it's got to be crypto now.
[00:10:47]  So stand down on the brown bag of cash.
[00:10:50]  And so Steve's thinking, this is nuts.
[00:10:53]  So he, but he's now fully in it.
[00:10:55]  You know, he's, he thought Diane Brad needed rescuing.
[00:10:57]  So he's still in rescue mode.
[00:10:59]  Steve asks for the lawyer's number so he can arrange this payment directly.
[00:11:03]  And here the lawyer gets something very wrong, as Jackie would later explain to me.
[00:11:10]  The town was Barnstable.
[00:11:12]  And he said Barnstable because it's spelled that way.
[00:11:19]  But up there, they call it Barnstable.
[00:11:22]  You know, no one local that would have known straight off.
[00:11:25]  You know, he didn't speak like he was even here.
[00:11:28]  So that was a dead giveaway.
[00:11:31]  That's when Steve decided to drive by Diane and Brad's house and to call the house phone on the way there.
[00:11:37]  Where were Diane and Brad?
[00:11:39]  In our living room.
[00:11:42]  Having a great day.
[00:11:44]  It was a regular perfect day in our lives.
[00:11:47]  Not in jail.
[00:11:48]  Not punching out cups.
[00:11:50]  Happy at home.
[00:11:51]  And it had been a long time since we'd been in jail.
[00:11:55]  I was in my recliner and I was very comfortable.
[00:11:59]  In fact, it's a swivel recliner that, you know, goes back and forth.
[00:12:03]  It goes every direction in the house.
[00:12:05]  I live in it.
[00:12:06]  It's perfect.
[00:12:07]  None of it was real.
[00:12:09]  They had no idea any of this was going on.
[00:12:11]  Right.
[00:12:12]  And we've been running around for hours at this point, hysterical.
[00:12:16]  They were totally fine.
[00:12:17]  There had been no incident whatsoever.
[00:12:20]  Yes, Doug and I, with all of our so-called higher education and city sophistication, had almost been had by some con man until Steve, the Cape Cod whale watch guy, shut the whole thing down.
[00:12:35]  I just stopped and took a breath and thought it out a little bit and it just didn't make any sense to me at all.
[00:12:44]  He is so incredibly capable at every aspect of life.
[00:12:49]  Like he just is just a can-do guy.
[00:12:52]  There's nothing like he's unstoppable, especially in like his business.
[00:12:56]  And, you know, dealing with stuff on the water too makes you that way.
[00:12:59]  Because when you're out on a, on a boat or a ship, you can't walk home if there's a problem.
[00:13:04]  So he has that mentality that wherever he's standing, he can fix the problem.
[00:13:09]  But Steve is also like a cool customer.
[00:13:12]  Like he's not like he told us after the fact.
[00:13:15]  Yeah.
[00:13:15]  He's like, yeah.
[00:13:17]  I mean, when, when he, when I answered the phone and it was Steve, he said, oh, good, you're home.
[00:13:24]  I have to call Doug, like in that tone of voice.
[00:13:26]  He wasn't like, oh my God, you're safe.
[00:13:27]  You know, he doesn't overreact to anything.
[00:13:29]  He's great in a crisis.
[00:13:31]  And he, when we asked him later, he said, I was going to call you.
[00:13:35]  If you didn't answer, I was going to go to your house.
[00:13:37]  If you weren't there, I was going to go to the Wellfleet police, our town.
[00:13:41]  And if they didn't know anything about it, I was going to end there.
[00:13:45]  If they did, I was going to go to Barnstable with the money.
[00:13:48]  So he was never, he's unflappable.
[00:13:50]  So Steve figured this whole thing out.
[00:13:54]  And Doug and I began asking ourselves, how on earth did we almost fall for this nonsense?
[00:14:01]  Well, it all boiled down to one thing in our defense.
[00:14:05]  We believed that Doug's mom had actually spoken with Diane.
[00:14:10]  That was the key to this whole thing running us out as long as it did, because what we thought we had in the category of things we know wasn't right.
[00:14:18]  That was a bad assumption.
[00:14:19]  Right.
[00:14:19]  They had fooled your mom, which is absolutely amazing that they fooled her about her own daughter's voice, hence the importance of the broken nose.
[00:14:28]  Yeah, right.
[00:14:29]  Right.
[00:14:29]  They had so many tricks.
[00:14:30]  And then, of course, COVID was just opened the door to so many of these stupid things because we're all, everything was ridiculous then.
[00:14:37]  Yeah.
[00:14:37]  That's why they didn't, she didn't get it.
[00:14:40]  Your mom heard a hysterical adult woman claiming she had broken her nose, which would explain a different voice.
[00:14:46]  And she went with it.
[00:14:48]  She believed it.
[00:14:49]  I thought it was Diane and still it I if I could hear it again, I would still think it was Diane.
[00:15:00]  You believed it because why?
[00:15:04]  Sounded like her voice and the panic.
[00:15:10]  I mean, I could take the, it just seemed like she was crying and scream and not screaming.
[00:15:17]  She was just kind of hysterical.
[00:15:20]  And it sounded like her.
[00:15:25]  The whole situation did not sound like her, but I really couldn't, you know, at the time, I couldn't really work my way through the car, car accident.
[00:15:42]  And I did realize that they, she would have been in a drunk driving accident, which is why I asked the lawyer.
[00:15:53]  Right, because Diane doesn't drink.

[00:15:55]  No.
[00:15:56]  Right.
[00:15:57]  And that's why he said he believed her when she told him that.
[00:16:03]  And that's why he sent off a blood test.
[00:16:06]  When you found out that this was an attempted fraud, what did you think?
[00:16:12]  What was your reaction?
[00:16:13]  I was wondering how I could have been so stupid.
[00:16:17]  Frankly, I mean, I just so thoroughly bought into that.
[00:16:23]  And by that time, it was out of my hands.
[00:16:28]  And I just watch all of you take over and figure it out.
[00:16:34]  We're loved.
[00:16:35]  We're loved.
[00:16:36]  We did come away from that feeling very loved.
[00:16:38]  It was so sophisticated, you know, the woman calling, pretending to be Diane, the lawyer, the court, you know, multiple people involved.
[00:16:49]  Did you ever figure out how you were chosen for this?
[00:16:55]  No.
[00:16:57]  I really didn't know.
[00:17:01]  I have no idea.
[00:17:03]  But then again, with these scams, I can't tell you how many times I've gotten one of these phone calls that says, Grandma, I'm in trouble.
[00:17:19]  I need help.
[00:17:20]  Oh, really?
[00:17:22]  Yes.
[00:17:24]  And it's more fun because now I just say, is your mother proud of what you're doing?
[00:17:32]  And they always hang up on me.
[00:17:36]  So for those out there, it's Barnstable.
[00:17:38]  If they try to do it again, it's not Barnstable.
[00:17:43]  So Di and Brad are safe.
[00:17:46]  No one has handed over any money.
[00:17:48]  Thank God.
[00:17:49]  And Steve has saved the day.
[00:17:51]  Now, Doug and I decide to have a little fun with our con man who does not yet know he's been busted.
[00:17:59]  I called him up with Doug taping the conversation.
[00:18:03]  And what happened next was six minutes of gold.

[00:19:27]  So I'm just going to play the call, okay, that I did with this guy once we were finally on to this.
[00:19:34]  And I would love if we could analyze it as we go.

[00:19:37]  And I can, I can pause it if necessary.

[00:19:45]  This is Paul.
[00:19:46]  Paul, hey, it's Megan Kelly.
[00:19:48]  So I haven't received the Bitcoin verification yet.
[00:19:51]  I was using my real name.
[00:19:52]  He knew who I was, and I had mentioned that I was a public figure.
[00:19:57]  Didn't stop him one bit.
[00:19:59]  Didn't bat an eye.
[00:20:00]  Not surprised at that?
[00:20:02]  Or are you?
[00:20:03]  Well, my guess is he's not from this country.
[00:20:06]  He may be out of the country.
[00:20:08]  What?

[00:20:09]  He does sound American, but I don't know that he fully knew the impact of Megan Kelly or what was coming.

[00:20:45]  At this point, he's walking me through exactly how to get him the Bitcoin.
[00:20:49]  I mean, he's an expert.

[00:21:01]  It is a mind game that's going on and you handle it phenomenally.

[00:21:42]  I did contact the court and explain to them about the shutdown there.
[00:21:47]  And they were, you know, it's unconstitutional to keep them there.
[00:21:51]  So we've got enough time to get them out.
[00:21:54]  We just have to try to pay the bails to get him out.
[00:21:57]  Like, how, are they, is there any way of like lowering the bail or getting them out just like for now?
[00:22:04]  I love what you're doing here because I call it doing the Colombo.
[00:22:08]  You're playing, you're playing stupid.
[00:22:10]  You're doing it brilliantly.
[00:22:11]  Because at this point, I know.
[00:22:12]  Yeah, yes, yeah.

[00:22:13]  And you're just slowly reeling him in, and he doesn't realize he thinks he's the predator.
[00:22:18]  Yeah.
[00:22:19]  Meanwhile, you're putting your jaws around him.
[00:22:21]  Like, how serious are these charges?
[00:22:24]  Well, they're very serious.
[00:22:25]  I mean, it's a very serious charge.
[00:22:28]  If there were not for the blood tests, we'd probably be looking at some jail time.
[00:22:35]  Did she take one already?
[00:22:38]  Yeah, I already requested it.
[00:22:39]  We're just waiting for the result.
[00:22:41]  I'm pretty sure it's going to come back below the levels because that's what she, you know, she promised me that she was not drinking.
[00:22:47]  No, there is zero chance that she was drinking.
[00:22:51]  Zero.
[00:22:51]  So this is one of the weird risks he took, where he based this whole alleged crime on Diane drunk driving.
[00:22:58]  And this is an area in which he didn't do his homework because she and Brad don't drink.
[00:23:03]  They just don't drink.
[00:23:04]  It's not their thing.
[00:23:05]  And he, so he took a shot at it.
[00:23:08]  And then everybody from Jackie to Doug to me, we were all like, they don't drink.
[00:23:14]  Right.
[00:23:14]  What do you mean?
[00:23:15]  Like, he kind of, but he was like, yeah, you know, I believe her.
[00:23:19]  That's why I'm going to, I'm going to mandate the blood test.
[00:23:22]  Well, this, this character is a combination fortune teller, con man, and he's reading everything, right?
[00:23:29]  So he has maybe done dozens, if not hundreds of these calls before.
[00:23:33]  So just like a fortune teller, he's feeling it out and he needs to make some leaps in order to advance to get to endgame.
[00:23:41]  And like a telemarketer, he has heard so many different responses and he knows where to put, like cut and paste what type of answers.
[00:23:49]  Yes, yes.
[00:23:50]  And that's what you are defeating here.
[00:23:53]  And we'll listen as we go on as he stumbles like a mental computer glitch.
[00:23:58]  You'll hear it as you get him.
[00:24:00]  He's so clever because he doesn't get thrown at all by she doesn't drink.
[00:24:04]  He's like, I'm on your side.
[00:24:05]  I agree.
[00:24:06]  She wasn't drunk.
[00:24:06]  That's why I'm mandating blood tests.
[00:24:08]  Right.
[00:24:08]  I mean, that's smooth.
[00:24:10]  So once once we pay the bail, how long until they can get out?
[00:24:15]  It takes about 45 minutes to an hour for them to be released.
[00:24:19]  Okay.

[00:31:12]  Wolves go after the weakest sheep, the slowest, the oldest, the ones most vulnerable.
[00:31:18]  And just to make a point, while we're laughing here, this is done in various machinations every day.
[00:31:24]  Elderly women who are lonely, you know, the Lonely Hearts Club.
[00:31:28]  I've had, you know, through friends and family, I'd say about a baker's dozen cases where women in their 60s and 70s have sold their homes, have taken loans, sent that money, knowing them only a week.
[00:31:43]  Loneliness is a son of a bitch.
[00:31:45]  Having an open heart is a son of a bitch in this case.
[00:31:49]  So it's a combination of having street smart and cyber sense.
[00:31:53]  When these things come in, there's a sense of urgency and you want to take care of your loved one.
[00:31:58]  And they'll come up with a number and what they look at is your social media.
[00:32:03]  We've all been guilty of it, some more than others, where we put everything on the effing internet.
[00:32:09]  Right.
[00:32:09]  You know, and think about pictures in front of your house.
[00:32:12]  I could spot your address.
[00:32:13]  I'm not saying you know, I'd never do that.
[00:32:15]  I know that.
[00:32:15]  But so many of us do, right?
[00:32:18]  So many tells the type of car.
[00:32:20]  So for the predator, the cyber predator, they're gathering, whether it's one person or a whole network of people.
[00:32:28]  They'll gather that intel.
[00:32:30]  And like, well, only my family would know that.
[00:32:33]  Well, let's talk about that in this case because that's one of the weirdnesses.
[00:32:36]  Jackie, Doug's 87-year-old mother, is not on social media.
[00:32:39]  Right.
[00:32:40]  Nor is Diane, nor is Brad, neither one of them.
[00:32:44]  So this guy knew clearly he was targeting an elderly woman.
[00:32:48]  Right.
[00:32:48]  And he at least knew her daughter's name because he had a woman call pretending to be here and said, mom, it's Di.
[00:32:55]  Right.
[00:32:55]  So like, how I, I, I don't even know how you figure that out.
[00:32:59]  Could they have flipped it?
[00:33:00]  Could she have touted your sister-in-law, correct?
[00:33:03]  Yeah.
[00:33:04]  Could she have had her mother, you know, online through social media at mom's 85.
[00:33:11]  She's not even out.
[00:33:12]  She's not online at all.
[00:33:13]  No, your sister-in-law isn't.
[00:33:14]  No.
[00:33:15]  Oh, well, you know what?
[00:33:16]  Then it may be closer to home than we know.
[00:33:19]  You know, most crimes, like, God forbid anything would ever happen to this home, like whether it be a burglary, vandalism, it's not from someone across the country.
[00:33:28]  It's the landscaper's cousin.
[00:33:29]  It's someone you know one or twice removed.
[00:33:32]  Those are the people you gotta.
[00:33:37]  I'll bet them.

[00:34:29]  Like if somebody calls, and I think most younger people know this, but especially for our older listeners, if somebody calls looking for information, asking personal information about your family members, names, anything that obviously people know, don't give your social security number.

[00:34:46]  And so like, I'll entertain some of these calls just to see like, you know, where is this going to go?
[00:34:52]  And they want everything.
[00:34:53]  I go, yeah, none ya.
[00:34:54]  Yeah.
[00:34:55]  None ya effing business.
[00:34:56]  You know, call the wrong guy.
[00:34:59]  Well, I, I, I guess that's true.
[00:35:02]  He must have gotten it from her or because you said maybe he's out of the country.
[00:35:06]  I just feel like he was an American, but that doesn't mean he wasn't sitting there in India making these calls.
[00:35:11]  I don't know if he was close to them or not, but that I hadn't considered that he had already done research potentially on Jackie because she wasn't that savvy to this prior to this whole event.
[00:35:20]  Yes.
[00:35:21]  All right.
[00:35:21]  Let's speak about the, how elaborate this was.
[00:35:26]  You know, there was a article, I think it was the Forbes business columnist recently who did this whole article about how she'd been defrauded out of $85,000 cash.
[00:35:35]  She put it in a shoebox over just the course of eight hours.
[00:35:38]  This guy convinced her to do it.
[00:35:40]  And this is a financial columnist.
[00:35:42]  So, you know, relatively sophisticated, but gave up the dough.
[00:35:45]  And he too had multiple people working with him on the fraud.
[00:35:49]  This guy, I think, had at least two others.
[00:35:52]  He had a fake courthouse number.
[00:35:54]  He had hold music that he tells me it's more than a one-man band.
[00:35:59]  Like, let's just like as a as a sort of an example is this show.
[00:36:05]  You're at the top of the masthead, but there's a whole infrastructure behind that beautiful face.
[00:36:10]  What's going on?
[00:36:11]  You bring your game, but you have your people, your producers, your bookers, your everything.
[00:36:16]  And to the viewer, it seems so seamless, but there's a lot to make it happen.
[00:36:20]  Same things with these confidence people.
[00:36:22]  They're gathering information.
[00:36:23]  Instead of producers, they may have researchers gathering backstory.
[00:36:28]  Instead of celebrities or politicians, they're gathering it on everyday people.
[00:36:33]  They could do an easy, you know, journeyman's financial assessment.
[00:36:38]  You know, is that house paid for?
[00:36:40]  Do they, how many, what's the type of cars that they have?
[00:36:43]  Do they have that discretionary cash or are they alone?
[00:36:46]  Are they desperate enough?
[00:36:48]  Do they have family?
[00:36:49]  These are all the stress points, if you will, that these confidence men, that these teams will look at and they use psychology.
[00:36:58]  They listen, it happened to me and I'm in the business.
[00:37:01]  I was on my, in a different form.
[00:37:03]  I'm on my computer.
[00:37:04]  My computer got hacked.
[00:37:06]  And I was so desperate.
[00:37:07]  I didn't want them getting my shit.
[00:37:09]  So I'm on it.
[00:37:10]  And a little voice, I called up Andy, the guy we use, you know, that's helped you in the past.
[00:37:17]  And Andy's like, discontinue right now.
[00:37:20]  I'm like, but I'm going to lose my.
[00:37:21]  He goes, I'm fucking telling you, dead off.
[00:37:24]  And I was that old granny right about to give away all my shit.
[00:37:28]  Oh, it's true.
[00:37:29]  So there is no socioeconomic intelligence quotient that makes you immune.
[00:37:34]  It's been my experience.
[00:37:36]  Sometimes the smarter you are, you know, you're so confident in who you are.
[00:37:41]  Oh, this would never happen to me.
[00:37:42]  I would be able to disseminate the BS.
[00:37:44]  Yes.
[00:37:45]  And they hit that pay button sooner than someone from the street.
[00:37:48]  Well, we love the piece of the story that ultimately it was the Cape Cod wailing guy who was like, I'm going by their house.
[00:37:57]  I don't know what these people are saying.
[00:37:59]  And he figured it out.
[00:38:00]  He's the hero of that.
[00:38:01]  10-4 of that.
[00:38:03]  Okay.
[00:38:03]  So what about the targeting of the elderly?
[00:38:05]  Because that does seem to be a theme in a lot of these.
[00:38:08]  Yes.
[00:38:08]  Yes.
[00:38:08]  What they'll do, again, they go on people's nature or that they could lose their home.
[00:38:15]  But how do they find out who's elderly and how to call them?
[00:38:18]  Like, do they get a sponsorship from the AARP or one of those magazines not to bash the ARP?
[00:38:23]  But I'm just saying, like, is there a way of getting people's numbers who are old?
[00:38:28]  Yeah.
[00:38:28]  Well, you can go.
[00:38:30]  There are services where you can get demographics of people.
[00:38:34]  So like my house was up for sale like you, Mass Exodus out of New York.
[00:38:40]  And I had all these people.
[00:38:41]  Like, how the F do you know?
[00:38:43]  How do you have my cell number, number one?
[00:38:45]  Right.
[00:38:45]  And how do you know my house is for sale?
[00:38:47]  Oh, we'll pay cash.
[00:38:48]  Oh, can I show your house?
[00:38:50]  Because there are services that you pay into and you get certain demographics.
[00:38:55]  So for me, I'm selling my house.
[00:38:57]  There are elderly groups.
[00:38:58]  If she ever signed on to any AARP or some type of association, those lots of, you know, the intelligence gathering of who you are, what you are, what demographic you are, the same way advertisers buy that.
[00:39:14]  Voters, like the campaigns.
[00:39:16]  Yes.
[00:39:16]  The campaigns are getting all that information right now.
[00:39:19]  Same way, you know, certain demographics want that information for sales.
[00:39:23]  They get it for marks to mark you as a victim.
[00:39:27]  They can find out about us.
[00:39:28]  And it's scary.
[00:39:29]  And it's the basic psychology.
[00:39:31]  You see, when we're in our home, you're an old elderly lady.
[00:39:34]  You may be widowed.
[00:39:35]  You're all alone.
[00:39:36]  And your primary thing is to go to the market to get that sale and come home.
[00:39:40]  You're hit out of the blue.
[00:39:42]  Hit out of the blue with a member of your family that's in distress and you could hit that button and you're going to be walked through it to get them out of trouble.
[00:39:51]  That's what you live for.
[00:39:53]  And they know that.
[00:39:54]  There are so many people who are in this exact position right now.
[00:39:57]  And it's like, I think my audience is in generally, in general, they're a lot younger than 87.
[00:40:02]  So I urge everybody, speak to your parent, speak to your great aunt, speak to anybody who's in this age group and speak to your friends too, because it's not just the elderly and let them know that this is out there kind of thing.
[00:40:15]  Whether it's this particular one, whether it's they hack into your computer, whether you're on one of those dating sites, they go to the basic emotion and need and insecurity of people and just realize take that breath, take a step back, because nothing is, unless you're in a car crash where you have to hit that brake, you know, hit the brake in your mind, hit that cyber break, hit that telephone brake and ask questions and say, give me a number, let me get back to you.
[00:40:44]  It can wait 10 minutes and that could save you a whole bunch of money, a whole bunch of people.
[00:40:48]  And I will say in that fraud that I mentioned that the business reporter wrote up about that happened to her, and in this attempted fraud of us, one of the things that she didn't do and that we didn't do and should have done was to do an independent Google search of the number of the courthouse.
[00:41:06]  Or in her case, I don't remember that it was like that.
[00:41:08]  She said they said she was getting investigated by the federal government.
[00:41:12]  But whoever they say is the third party, just hang up and do a Google search.
[00:41:18]  Don't call their number.
[00:41:19]  Call, you find out the number.
[00:41:21]  Right.
[00:41:21]  You make an independent call to see if this is real and get the fraudster's number so you can then call them.
[00:41:26]  And go one step further because there are apps I can call you and it looks like it's coming from Doug's number.
[00:41:33]  Yeah, that technology exists out there.
[00:41:36]  That's rudimentary.
[00:41:37]  Yes, I can call you right now and it would ring Doug's number and you would answer.
[00:41:42]  Whoa.
[00:41:43]  So there are different levels to this.
[00:41:45]  And, you know, but if I'm dialing out, I mean, like, that's that's the empowerment: is if you are dialing out on your phone, then you take Barnstable courthouse.

[00:41:54]  Like, I had Amazon.
[00:41:56]  I had an Amazon scam and it was online.
[00:41:59]  It came over a text, right?

[00:42:07]  I got on the phone with Amazon direct, you know, and I'm like, is this what you do?

[00:42:16]  Don't you get, I get attempted frauds at me every day via email.
[00:42:20]  So it's like, I usually just forward them to Abby and she deals with it or like the scams and she puts these blockers on my phone.

[00:42:29]  But it's amazing because most people don't have an Abby and most people haven't had this happen to them and they're not living on guard.
[00:42:35]  They're actually still trusting, loving people.
[00:42:37]  Right.
[00:42:37]  Unlike us cynical bastards.
[00:42:41]  And even as cynical as we are, we always got taken in.
[00:42:44]  Let me tell you, listen, essentially, we're good people.
[00:42:48]  We care about people.
[00:42:50]  But F that, like, I had a lady, I was in Midtown.
[00:42:54]  This was a number of years ago, a middle-aged, well-dressed woman, and she hit me with the gasoline on my car.
[00:43:02]  And I was fascinated that this woman was well-dressed, well-spoken, and she's hitting me up.
[00:43:09]  I said, I'll walk you to your car right now.
[00:43:11]  Oh, I really can't.
[00:43:12]  And then she just walked away.
[00:43:14]  So they prey, you know, upon your good nature.
[00:43:17]  And again, you know, many people don't haven't been raised from the streets, you know, but it's incumbent to have those street smarts.

[00:43:25]  And bad guys don't necessarily dress up like in the old Batman bad guy t-shirt.

[00:43:31]  Now it's on the internet and the cyber world is a whole nother animal.
[00:43:35]  And just remember, always press the brakes and question, question, question.

[00:43:39]  You're not surprised the cops weren't interested.

[00:45:08]  As soon as you hear crypto, you're like, wait a minute.
[00:45:11]  And we too were like, what?
[00:45:13]  But it was just the COVID weirdness, the fact that we had spoken with the court, we thought ourselves, and the fact that we hadn't yet even thought to question Jackie's telling us she had spoken with Diane herself and that she was really in trouble.
[00:45:32]  Like that didn't even enter our minds that that piece of the story might not be true.
[00:45:38]  So anyway, words of caution in this story for everyone.
[00:45:43]  And honestly, you need to know this, right?
[00:45:45]  Because what if this happened to your mom or you?
[00:45:50]  And now you'll know.
[00:45:51]  Like if we hadn't told the story, you might not know.
[00:45:54]  Maybe you would be hoodwinked.
[00:45:55]  I don't know.
[00:45:56]  It could happen.
[00:45:57]  Trust me.
[00:45:58]  So we decided to tell you the story, even though we knew you might mock us a little, because we want to help others.
[00:46:04]  And we learned a lot too ourselves.
[00:46:06]  I think all of us did.
[00:46:07]  Hope all of you learned something from today's show and from Fraud Week all week.
[00:46:13]  Because sadly, there are fraudsters out there working hard every day to steal your money or something precious.
[00:46:20]  And most of these never see the light of day, right?
[00:46:22]  They just happen privately because people are too embarrassed to talk about it or scared.
[00:46:26]  Yeah, they're humiliated.
[00:46:28]  And I get it, but there's no reason to be humiliated.
[00:46:30]  If you get defrauded by one of these losers or almost defrauded in our case, what does it say about you?
[00:46:35]  It says you believe in human nature.
[00:46:37]  You believe in others.
[00:46:38]  You probably have a kind heart.
[00:46:40]  You're probably a trusting soul.
[00:46:42]  Those are not bad things, right?
[00:46:44]  But slightly jaded, trusting soul, but slightly jaded, I think that's what we're going for.
[00:46:49]  So that's why we shared and that's why we hope everybody listens and shares and talks about these kinds of things more and more so we can help each other.
