	I'm gonna provide uh update from the incident that we spoke about earlier today that occurred at the church of the guys.

	Was neutralized at 1033, 44 in the parking lot of that church.
	That suspect is a 40-year-old male from the city of Burton, who we identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford.

	I gave you 10 victims who were victims of gunshot.

	I'm Danny Freeman sitting in for Frederica Whitfield, and we're beginning this hour with breaking news.
	A mass shooting at a Mormon church in Michigan has left one person dead and nine others injured, including children.
	Police say the shooter rammed his truck through the front doors at the same time a large fire started at the church.
	Now officials just gave a press conference a short time ago.
	Let's take a listen.
	Here to give you some preliminary details on an incident that happened earlier today at 1025 a.m. within Grambling Township.
	First off, I'd like to say our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this incident, which is completely unnecessary and avoidable.
	The incident that we're going to talk about here today, as I said, was happening at 1025 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is located at 4285 McCamlish Road.
	During this incident, what we know right now is that a 40-year-old suspect from Burton.
	He's a male.
	He drove his vehicle through the front doors of the church.
	He then exited his vehicle, firing several rounds at individuals within the church.
	Um have been transported to local hospitals at this time, including one who has been deceased.
	Officers who were trained immediately responded to the area.
	One was a DNR officer, and then one was a Grambling Township officer, where they met the suspect and they engaged in gunfire with that particular individual, neutralizing that suspect, and that suspect is uh no longer with us.
	As I said, it is a 40-year-old male from Burton.
	What the fuck is wrong with people, man?
	During all this incident as well, there was a uh fire that occurred, and we believed that that was deliberately set by the suspect.
	Uh we do believe that we will find additional victims once we uh have that scene secure.
	Uh that fire was just extinguished by the Grambling Township fire department uh within the past hour.
	So where we go from here is we have investigators, we're gonna do search warrants on the suspect's residence.
	We're gonna find out if there was a motive, we're gonna go through cell phone records, things like that.
	Um we have the FBI, you know, they're devoting a hundred uh agents to this area because as you can imagine, there's a lot of witnesses that were within the church, and that is a lot of witness information statements that we have to obtain.
	So I'd like to thank uh all the agencies who responded.
	Um, the city of Grand Blank, Genesee County, Oakland County Sheriff's Office, um, Flint Township Police Department, the DNR, the state police, and the ATF.
	Um, I will provide additional information for you at 5 p.m., but I am willing to take any questions that you have that I could possibly answer right now.
	Chief, can you talk about the kind of the progress of offense?
	Did the suspect set the fire than the back inside of his vehicle and then ran the front door or did it all happen at the same time?
	So, from what I understand, and again, this is just a preliminary uh investigation right now from what I have been briefed on is that he ran the vehicle through the front door, exited, then started firing shots.
	Um we are still trying to determine exactly when and Where that fire ended up coming from and how it got started.
	So we believe it was deliberately set though by the suspect.
	Were they in an active um service when this happened?
	Yes, the service was active.
	There was hundreds of people within the church.
	Are you sure it's only one suspect at this point, or is it possible if you could help send the fire and what have you?
	Yes, uh, it is one suspect that we know of at this point.
	We do not believe that there's a threat to the public.
	We believe that we have the guy who did this.

	Oh, could you comment at all on the severity of the injuries of this time?
	Uh we have a couple in critical condition.
	Like I said, one is deceased, the city of Rome, Tennessee County, Oakland County Sheriff's Office.
	Or two, I'm sorry.
	Um, one township, one department, the DNR specific deceased as well.
	And the ATM, multiple victims are in the city.
	Um I will provide additional information for you at 5 p.m., but I am willing to take any questions that you have that I could possibly answer.
	Chief, can you talk about the kind of the progress of events?
	Did the suspect set the fire then you back inside of his vehicle and then ran the front door, or did it all happen at the same time?
	So from what I am sorry about that.
	We'll find some additional victims once we find the area where the fire was.
	An assault rifle.
	So it's hard to ammunition.
	Did he have a lot of ammunition?
	That I don't know of yet, and I could get you later.
	I don't think the suspect and there was a mass shooting in North Carolina as well, man.

	Chief to clarify, you said you there may be additional different things like inside the church or yes, where the fire was.
	So, and the reason why we don't we can't confirm that just yet is because it was a large fire, and we do believe that there was people up there that were near that fire, and they were unable to get out of the church.
	So we do believe that we will find additional victims once we're able to search that once there's no signs of a fire reigniting.
	So do you believe then that the victims that are still there they succumbed to fire injuries or gunshots, or you're not sure?
	That I'm not sure, but I could provide all that information hopefully at 5 p.m.

	Every training I've seen, it's always been a building that has not been on fire.
	So how do you then deal with an active shooter when you have that situation happening as well?
	Well, we are seeing a thing that I've noticed, man, with these active shooters is these guys they don't just like commit this active shooter, then they always take themselves out or get taken out.
	So you never really get a real motive, right?
	The the police and the feds go to a search warrant, figure out what his motive was, whatever, but then by then it's out the news cycle, and no one remembers.
	Right, unless they get something right then and there.
	But man.
	Here at Grand Blank Township, and there's a lot of agencies within the state of Michigan.
	We are specifically trained to go right to the threat in an active shooter situation, and I'm proud of my guys and the DNR who responded to this scene who immediately took that suspect out, so there was no additional victims.
	So it was a great job by our staff.
	So it was a law enforcement officer that neutralized the suspect.
	Yes, there's two law enforcement officers involved.
	I uh will be back here at 5 p.m. to give you additional information and hopefully answer some of the uh questions that you guys went over here today.

	The thin veneer of peace and tranquility which has enveloped this idyllic waterfront community was shattered last night by gunfire that came from the water.
	When the dust settled, eight people were shot, three of them are dead, and at least one is now clinging for their life.
	I want to tell you that the group of people that stand behind me now awoke this morning with a firm resolve to seek maximum justice in this case.
	I will tell you that the men and women of law enforcement worked quickly and in team-like fashion to give us the tools that we need to be effective in a courtroom.
	And that process will begin literally tomorrow with the first appearance of Nigel Edge.
	Now, there's a lot that prosecutors under the rules of North Carolina's professional rules are not permitted to say.
	We can talk a lot more about process than we can about facts.
	But you know something about the core nucleus of operative facts.
	I want to tell you a little bit about what the road ahead looks like.

	It was really heartening to witness that play out in real time.
	So tomorrow we are going to be in a courtroom, and then and for the first time, we're going to be able to talk about the facts.
	In the fullness of time, the truth will emerge in a courtroom.
	And that's where I'm going to be doing the majority of my talking.
	Um he will be given a first appearance.
	He is currently charged with three counts of first degree murder, uh, five counts of attempted murder and oh shit.
	Five accounts of assault with a deadly weapon intent to kill, inflicting serious injury.
	I anticipate that additional charges could be forthcoming.
	And so we are going to be moving forward in that process tomorrow.
	Uh, he is currently held without bond.
	It is my hope and expectation, but that will remain tomorrow and throughout this process.
	Um, I will say that North Carolina is a state for which the death penalty is a potential in my office, um, does seek it in appropriate cases.
	I want you to know that there is a process in place within my office to scrupulously review the facts and circumstances of every homicide offense that comes through our door.
	I have a team of senior prosecutors that meet uh T Fred 31 with the gift of sub.
	Appreciate you, my friend.
	As part of a death penalty review committee, and we make sure that we thoroughly evaluate the facts in the law on a case-by-case basis.
	We do that to ensure that we make um our decisions on the basis of the fact and law and not emotion, because it should go without saying this is a very emotional time for a lot of people, and we want to continue to embrace the process that has served us so well over the 15 years that I've been fortunate enough to be your elected district attorney.
	To sort of paint the picture of what occurred last night.
	Um, the incident location where this occurred, the American Fish Company, which I've already uh indicated to you was quite literally the backdrop for the movie Safe Haven, um, had live music going on last night.
	There is an outdoor deck which faces the water, and there was a lot of people out there last night just enjoying uh live music under the stars.
	The thread that connects everyone who's a victim in this case at this point, just appears to be a love of having a good time and enjoying all that Southport has to offer.
	Sadly, a lot of the victims in this case appear to be not members of our community, but people who are here on vacation.
	And just to anticipate one of the questions that I imagine that you have, that's one of the very reasons why when we took out these warrants early this morning, we used only initials for people's names rather than their full name.
	Uh, some of the victims' families live out of state in his district attorney.
	I wanted to ensure that we made proper notifications to them before they're hearing about it on the news.
	And so that is one of the reasons why the arrest warrants that you have contain only initials at this juncture.
	Um, tomorrow, um, I expect they're gonna be hearing more about potentially the identity of some of the victims, and you're gonna hear more of the facts that underlie um the the investigation.
	But um, I can't overstate um how quickly um this investigation unfolded.
	Um, very heartened by the fact that law enforcement was able to make uh an immediate apprehension.
	I'm confident based on what I now know that we got the right guy and that he acted alone.

	Again, with the guardrails in place being uh facts are still being developed, and there's a lot we can't say consistent with the ethical rules under 3.83.6.

	Um he's had some minor brushes with the law, but to this point, we're unaware of any significant criminal history.
	Again, we're gonna check out of state and it's early on in the investigation.
	But as I stand before you today, I'm unaware of that.

	Yeah, so the question is is this commentary?
	I'll tell you that uh violent crime is virtually non-existent uh in the city of Southport.
	This is an idyllic waterfront community that really enjoys a reputation for being a very peaceful and tranquil place.
	Um Again, I've been a prosecutor for 30 years.
	I've started out my career in Miami, Florida.
	And then I was for a decade an assistant district attorney in Wilmington, North Carolina.
	So I'm not unacquainted with violent crime.
	Bad things happen to good people wherever you live, and I'm reminded of that today.
	But this would be remarkable anywhere, but particularly in a place that was called Safe Haven.
	Yes, sir.
	So the question was asked, is there a motive at this point?
	And let me be clear.
	People frequently want to know what happened and why.
	Is prosecutors in a courtroom we have to prove intent.
	Intent intent and motive are very different things.
	We don't actually have to prove motive.
	We don't know why people do what they do.
	You can chase the ghost of Y all over a courtroom and never catch it.
	That's going to be part of a comprehensive investigation as we look towards his reason for doing this, but we have to prove criminal intent and not motive.

	Yeah, so we executed the search warrant last night uh in collaboration with the SBI and Southport and the sheriff's office, and his vehicle was searched along with his boat and residents.
	Uh and I won't go into specifics about what was uh recovered, however, they were firearms, and if the SBI would like to elaborate on that a little more, since they are the they are the uh agency that took possession of those weapons, I'll let them discuss that.
	Pretty nice and organized for a state-run investigation, man.

	Jumped on it quick, got him in custody, did a search run right away, press conference, yeah, actually answering questions.
	So the question is, you know, when he was encountered by the Coast Guard and law enforcement, uh, what was he doing?
	Uh that information was put out last night um about the boat, which is very vague.

	There was no other descriptions other than a white center console boat that was that we were able to push out.
	Uh our Coast Guard partners, uh, which the Coast Guard station is in very close proximity to here, uh, were patrolling uh the area uh along with the sheriff's office.
	And as they were patrolling, they located a white boat um at our boat access, our 55th Street boat access.
	At the time of his encounter, they were he was loading the boat up.
	And that's the that and then that's when we engaged him in a conversation and ultimately took took him into or detained him and then ultimately took him into custody.
	He lives on the island or his whole yes, he is a resident that lives on the island, yes, sir.

	Several of those municipalities um have sufficient tax base to be able to afford their own local law enforcement agencies.
	And so the sheriff's office blankets the entire county.
	They have overlapping and concurrent jurisdiction over everything that happens in the municipalities.
	And one of the unique features of this case is that the shooting occurred in the city limits of Southport, but the apprehension happened in Oak Island for a resident that lives in Oak Island.
	Uh, there's going to be um a very comprehensive investigation that takes place not only by the sheriff's office that blankets the entire county, but also by the State Bureau of Investigation.
	Um they are an assisting agency, and at my request and the matter of uh Todd Foring and uh Sheriff Brian Chisholm, they were asked to uh come in last night and assist us in processing the crime scene and conducting critical interviews.
	Um so that's the team of people that we have assembled.
	Um and again, I know that there's going to continue to be a lot of questions on people's minds about what has occurred, and those those answers will emerge in the fullness of time.
	But I want to circle back to where that we started, which is uh keeping the victims and their families in the thoughts and prayers of all of us in this community.
	Uh, this is truly a devastating incident.
	Uh, for those of us, we're not just professionals, we're residents of Brunswick County.
	And our hearts and prayers are with the people that not only live here, but just enjoy our space.
	Um they they are some of them are literally fighting for their life right now in hospital rooms.
	So please continue to lift them up and keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
	Uh, them and their families.
	You know, there's gonna be a lot of vicarious trauma and the ripple effects of crime cannot be overstated.
	You know, this impacts, you know, not just the people that were shot, but their families, this community, and do this nation.
