Guys, yeah, we know one man is dead and another man is hurt after an overnight shooting here in the heart of downtown Minneapolis.
We do have some video of what that scene looked like earlier, of course, as police were here investigating.
We saw family members out here hugging one another.
Uh, it was a very emotional scene here.
Just to kind of give you an idea of where we are.
This is right across from the state theater and the Capitol Grill.

Chief Brian O'Hara is providing an update right now, and he's addressing.
Earlier this afternoon, our city experienced a deeply troubling act of violence.
In the middle of a day, a gunman armed with a high velocity 223 rifle opened fire on a group of people on the sidewalk on the block behind me, directly across the street from a Catholic high school.
That gunman wound up killing one person and wounding six others that were standing on the sidewalk.
This level of firepower unleashed in broad daylight is completely sickening and unacceptable.
Obviously, the investigation is still in its preliminary stages, so the information that I have is subject to change.
But what I can tell you is shortly before 1.30 this afternoon, Minneapolis police received a shot spotter notification that approximately 30 rounds of gunfire had been fired near the intersection of East 29th Street and Clinton Avenue.
Police officers responded, finding one adult male who was deceased upon arrival.
Additionally, there were six additional victims suffering from gunshot wounds, five males and one woman.
These six victims were found at various locations in the area.
Three of those surviving victims were said to have critical and life-threatening injuries.
However, I can tell you the most recent update I just received is that all six remaining victims are expected to survive.
Our thoughts.
Well, that's good.
The news that I got in the beginning was two were dead.
So it looks like it's only one.
Right now we're obviously with the person who lost his life, with those who are trying to recover from their injuries, and with all those families and members of our community who have been affected.
Thanks to the swift response from Minneapolis police officers, our investigators are pursuing strong leads at this time.
We're thankful for the assistance that we've received from business and residents in the area.
Our crime lab is here on the scene processing dozens of pieces of evidence that have been recovered, and we're doing everything we possibly can to identify those who are responsible for this violence.
As your police department, we want all people in our community to know that we remain committed to doing everything we possibly can to reduce serious street crime while rebuilding trust with our residents.
We will not stop until we can make every block in this city safe for all of our residents.
But we cannot do that alone.
Obviously, we need partners.
So certainly we are asking anyone else in the community who may have information about what occurred here to please come forward even anonymously.
Because together we can continue to try and make Minneapolis safer for all people in our community.
And with that, I'll do the best I can to answer questions that you have.
I believe all seven victims are adults.
I don't have their ages at this time.
I think one or two may still be unidentified, but they're believed to be adults.
The shooter fled the scene.
We have substantial pieces of evidence that we are reviewing.
and I feel confident that we will be able to identify this person.

From the shot spotter notification, we do not believe this to have been fully automatic.
Um, However, this was uh clearly a high velocity two two three rifle.
Uh and certainly it's obvious from the injuries that people suffered here.
Just the the significant damage that uh those types of rounds can do to the human body.

Can you talk about where this took place?
This is next to high school.
So we were here just last week.
This is the the backside of Cristo del Rey.
It's a Catholic high school.
Last week, we were here conducting our community ComStat meeting.
We've been here several times, you know, conducting different meetings and community engagements here.
And obviously, school was in session.
It's a high school.
Just thankfully, you know, we spoke to some of the students here.
They're fine.
But it's obviously deeply, deeply troubling to have something like this happen right outside of a school.

have information to release uh on that at this time this particular area though there's obviously people who hang out and I think you could talk to residents that live around here's obviously people that hang out.
So there was a school sheet shooting and then there was another shooting what the fuck out alongside of uh the highway there 35 and some of the other blocks that are affected by that um so this this just appeared to be people that were hanging out here on the sidewalk.

So there's one person that was killed that is deceased at the scene.
At least one other victim, I believe, that was at the scene when police arrived.
The remaining five people ran from the scene after being shot.
So some of them had gone to inside of different businesses along Lake Street and were found by the police and the ambulance in the area here.
Chief, we've seen a number of vehicles with windows, obviously, like this one.
that have been blown out here were they a number of vehicles get hit too by a square gun there is damage uh to some of the vehicles that are parked in the area here yes and are you all familiar with anybody involved I don't have information to release on that victims are at HCMC I believe they are all at each yes they're all at HCMC.
And the locations of the mean with them on the corner uh the shooter was at the corner of East 29th Street and Clinton Avenue and the victims we believe the victims were gathered on the sidewalk about 15 yards in from the corner.
Do you believe the shooter had help from the house?
I'm not gonna speculate on that I do believe there is uh just one shooter though.

Was the shooter outside of the vehicle when he fired shooter was on foot when he fired your thoughts about this it's uh it's deeply disturbing.
Obviously this is the middle of the day um we are uh standing literally right next to a high school um and this type of weapon uh it's more for a a weapon of war than something to be on the street here.
I mean, just the uh the damage that was done to the bodies of some of these victims is is unspeakable.
And thankfully, uh, you know, we don't have more people uh that that are dead from this incident.
Can you speak to the number of shots that were fired here?
And if that's something you expect to see in this type of thing.
Uh we believe it's about 30 rounds.
That's what the shot spotter detected.
There's uh you know, obviously numerous uh shell casings that are being collected.
They're rifle two, two, three casings.
Um, but that's that's as much as I can say at this time.
We don't believe it was automatic gunfire.
Can you confirm if the person who is dead as a practice person that sure was potentially targeting?
No.
No, we don't know that.
We do not believe uh that this was a random act of violence.
We believe that uh at least one of those individuals that was here was specifically targeted.
So Westman is a school shooter, he was dead at the scene.
I cannot say that at this time.
And can you talk at all about any businesses that help with trying to assist any victims that went out there?
I'm sure they did.
I just don't have that specific information.
I believe uh I I believe some of the victims wound up in some of the businesses directly behind us here.

The video has been taken down.

Minnesota's governor says that they are investigating a horrific act of violence, and local and federal officials are all over this scene right now.

Uh the city of Minneapolis said the shooter is now contained, and that there is no active threat to the community any longer.
Uh here's some uh we got some brand new sound from witnesses um in just a moment here that are describing just how panicked of a sc scene that has been.
The president has also been briefed.
He just posted on Truth Social that he has been fully briefed on the tragic shooting in Minneapolis in Minnesota.
The FBI quickly responded, and they are on the scene.
The White House will continue to monitor this terrible situation.

So and how did he get out?
He just ran, you know, when this fire he said it seemed like it went on for eternity, but when it stopped, he just he ran out of the building.
When did you first hear about this?
So I we live about two blocks from here.
Uh I was on a call, all the windows of our home were open.
I know what gunfire sounds like, and uh and I could tell I I was shocked.
I I I said there's no way that that could be gunfire.
There was so much of it.
So it was sporadics, what so it was uh semi-automatic, it seemed like a rifle.
A lot of gunfire there, according to that witness.

Well, we're continuing to learn more details about this disturbing, heartbreaking tragedy on the first week of school for students at Annunciation Catholic School in South Minneapolis.
Before we get into details surrounding this, I just want to go over the like why are you gonna target a Catholic school, bro?
Like what the fuck is wrong with people, bro?

For the reaction, Governor Tim Walz writing, quote, on X early this morning.

I've been briefed on a sh on a shooting at Annunciation Catholic School, and we'll continue to provide updates as we get more information.
The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and State Patrol are on scene.
I'm praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school.
Um Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is the state version of like Minneapolis's uh sorry, Minnesota's FBI.
That's their state FBI.
And then state patrol is their state police.
...was marred by this horrific act of violence.
So, Aisha, reports about the shooting first came in just before 8.30 a.m.
local time.
Our Fox affiliate in Minneapolis reports the Annunciation Catholic school has students for kinder for kindergartners through eighth graders, and the school indeed started on Monday.
The Fox affiliate also reports that mass is held on Wednesdays at 8 15 local time there, and students were reportedly in mass at the time of the shooting.
So the Star Tribune, which is a pretty big publication in this region, it's reporting some disturbing, heartbreaking details.
So I do want to warn that what you're about to hear is going to be very, very upsetting.
The outlet said it spoke to a parent who was sitting in a back pew when mass started at 8 15 local time, and that's when a shooter, he this person reported a shooter opening opening fire outside the building with a semi-automatic weapon.
THE OUTLET ALSO QUOTES THE PARENT AS SAYING THIS, QUOTE, "HE JUST PEPPER SPRAYED THROUGH THE STAINED GLASS WINDOWS INTO THE BUILDING, 50 TO 100 SHOTS." THE OUTLET ALSO SAID THE PARENT REPORTED WITNESSING TWO CASUALTIES.
So a reunification zone has been set up for families of children at the school, and right now emergency first responders are urging parents to go to this area.
If they have any questions, you can imagine, Aisha, that this morning some parents will be getting perhaps some of the worst news of their lives.
And of course, we're going to be keeping all of these people in our thoughts and our prayers.
This is six hours ago.
This was a lot sooner.
Um like right after the shooting happened.
This morning is details continue to emerge about this horrific tragedy.
Again, in the first week of school for students at uh Annunciation School here in South Minneapolis.

Two of them were adult patients, nine pediatric patients.
Four of them required the operating room.
And up to this point in time, there have been no fatalities related to any of those patients that were brought to our organization.
Uh I want to take a moment to tell you how proud I am to work for this organization.
Uh and the teams that were involved, the resources again that were mobilized, our surgical colleagues or medical uh medicine colleagues, our amazing nursing staff, our psychologists that uh help uh process uh these events for us, uh environmental services, all those involved.
Uh head up an EMS, brought in all the scene to our organization, and we're very lucky to have two emergency medicine, uh emergency medical services directors that were on scene and able to provide us with really important information that again helped us to prepare for this event.
So I don't have any uh individual or specific uh information about the patients at this time for you.
