Time Text
Alright, welcome to today's interview on Brighteon.com.
I'm Mike Adams, the founder of Brighteon, and I am the co-designer of these incredible new knives, and machetes in this case, co-designed with Dawson Knives.
And we are joined today by John Roy from Dawson Knives, third generation knife maker based out of Arizona using American made Magna Cut steel.
And they also have CPM3V steel revolutionary.
We've got these products available now probably for a very limited time.
Welcome, John, to the show today.
It's great to have you on.
I love, I'm just such a fan of what your family is able to produce.
It's amazing.
I'm just so happy to be on here, Mike.
And it's been pretty amazing, the knives and the machetes and now a hatchet that we've been able to co-design together and produce in order to help people have a tool that's not only functional but will last forever and is sourced and American-made.
It's really incredible.
Folks, this isn't just going to be an infomercial, although I am going to plug the knives on our store, and thank you for your support.
Honestly, you cannot find anything else like this in the world.
Go to healthrangerstore.com slash knives, plural.
K-N-I-V-E-S. Healthrangerstore.com slash knives, and it'll bring these up.
We've got the outfitter here, which John will describe what this is all about.
And then...
John, the Outfitter Pro.
I mean, it just gives me a feeling of great happiness to pull that out of the sheath.
This is a tool for survival, for rural living, for gardening, for outrigging.
Tell us, John, about this design and what makes it special in terms of materials and composition and construction.
Yeah, so that particular design, you know, you and I started a year ago before we actually released this and we started working through the shape and the dynamics.
So a couple of things.
First, it's made out of CPM MagnaCut steel.
So that is made in America.
It's a powder metal.
It's very unique because unlike most steels that are made today, this particular steel has a chemical composition That allows it to be as easy to sharpen as a high carbon tool steel, but holds an edge like a stainless steel and can still resist about 30 days of salt water.
So this new steel is very sought for in the aerospace industry.
We actually compete against it, but we're just the little guys.
But to get this steel takes a lot and then to heat treat it.
So we actually do a differential heat treat.
So we have a stronger edge and then we get some flex off the back.
So that's our own proprietary heat treat that we do using ancient Japanese techniques and ancient old world techniques to work on these modern steels.
Wait a second, John.
What you're describing here, in the whole history of knife making for centuries, the properties that you just described would have been considered impossible.
There's always a trade-off.
I mean, you're talking about corrosion resistance holds an edge.
It's also flexible.
It's got high Rockwell hardness.
It's extremely durable, and it flexes, which, of course, prevents the shattering.
Like, honestly, five years ago, if somebody heard that, they would say you're making it up.
That's not possible.
Oh, absolutely.
And, you know, there's a lot that has changed in the last four years.
And first, the steel coming out, this MagnaCut, invented by my good friend, Laren Thomas.
We knew them.
We went to all the knife shows.
He's actually here in Arizona.
What makes it so awesome is that by doing this new type of steel, it's a whole different take on how to put the molecules and your alloys together in order to form a steel that is super stainless without a lot of chromium.
So that way you get a razor sharp edge, you can sharpen it out in the field, but then it's still super stain resistant.
Now on top of that...
And by stain resistant, I'm sorry, but you mean oxidation resistant.
That's correct.
Yes.
That's right.
Right, so if you just leave this, like if I leave it in my ranch vehicle, like my side-by-side ranch vehicle, right, which I'm guilty of doing with various tools, and usually they just rust, man, but yours don't rust.
What?
Yeah, we all are, and you're right, you know?
Yeah, these do not rust.
I mean, I'm not saying they're 100% rust proof, but they're highly, highly corrosion or oxidation resistant, which really matters.
I mean, you're living in Arizona, not as big a problem there as in Texas or East Texas, where humidity is more of an issue, for sure.
Yeah, that's absolutely correct.
You know, these knives are very rust resistant.
There's nothing rust proof.
I mean, anything can rust in the right conditions.
But these knives are very rust resistant and still getting a high Rockwell C. So that means a hard edge.
That means you don't have to resharpen it as much.
But the flex, that's really important.
And that's coming from a proprietary heat treat.
You know, our family, three generation, we're Bible-believing Christians.
You know, we pray.
And that was one of the things with this heat treat.
We failed 20 times.
I mean, we tried.
I mean, it's something totally different.
We prayed about it, and the Lord led us to this way of heat treating the steel, which is very different, very unique, that ties in old and new world technologies together.
And, you know, it's what we call good old American ingenuity.
Yeah, true.
Well, I love...
See, you've taken the best metal alloy that's possible here, and then you've combined it with a G10 handle with a unique pattern, a grip pattern.
So this is a lifetime tool, right?
I mean, this will last a lifetime.
And it has specific features that you and I worked on.
For example, I really like the serrations here for the thumb, so your thumb doesn't slip.
I like the extended finger guard here.
That's one of...
I mean, you and I both agree that's really important when you're thrusting or hacking.
And then you have a hole here, and also on the end here.
So this can be affixed if necessary, or it can be attached or carried in different ways.
And obviously it's full tank construction with, I don't know, not rivets, but What do you call these, the two-sided screws that mount the handle?
What do you call those?
That come into that.
Yeah, so those are special screws that come in there, and that way they're Allen wrench, so it's easy to tie down.
They come in from both ways, all stainless steel, and that way it gives a very good mechanical bond for the handle to the blade.
You know, the cool thing about this whole design of the Outfitter and the Outfitter Extreme When we worked together, we actually looked at a lot of hard-use knives out in the field.
I went to a lot of cutting competitions and seen these guys that are hacking 2x4s, these guys that are cutting balls, lots of rope.
This is what we call a super performance knife.
It is built in that Frame of a super competition blade that can do all those chores, but then in a survival sense, we did a lot of testing.
So the blade is actually balanced.
So we did a lighter weight so that we can carry on your backpack with the new rigging sheet that allows you to put any type of rigging that you want.
And it's got a nice lock and pop to it.
So that way you can carry in your backpack and carry upside down if you wanted to.
Here it is.
Let me show the sheath.
Yes.
And it's customizable.
You can change how tight it is.
And this is a semi-flexible carbon fiber.
Yeah, carbon fiber kydex.
So that way you can still heat it and mold it, but it's more heat resistant.
And the great thing about that sheath is that you can take it on the elements.
It's not going to mess up.
You've got a drain hole in there, so you can blow it out, wash it out.
This thing is made to be used for any type of situation.
We built this blade to outlive its user.
And then have it back to be passed down by generations.
This is a real high-performance blade, and those two holes, the one you have in front of the guard and the one that you have in the back allows a langer tie-down, so that way you can really strap it down.
You can tie it to your hand, and you get positive motion to it.
Everything about it is balanced and weighted because I do a lot of backpacking.
I do a lot of hiking.
I also do a lot of hunting, and we'll talk about that later.
But this particular blade is not to wear you down.
It's to give you a lot of blade for a lot less weight, but a lot of strength in it.
And that's why we chose the steel.
Alright, so let me show people the options here.
So there's the outfitter machete here on top.
And what's the blade length and overall length of this?
So that one's more like a buoy size.
So if I'm going backpacking, that one works really well.
I really like it.
I could do all my camp chores.
I can get firewood.
It's good for batoning and splitting.
Also, I mean, in a pinch, I mean, not ideal, but I mean, it does actually do camp food prep really well.
We just went hunting recently and I took one of those and it did some really good food prep.
It was a great little like chef's knife for that.
Yeah, what's interesting is it's mostly flat.
And so you can use a large part of it here as a chef's knife, and then it's curved on the end, which I like that.
That also has, you know, in a pinch, some game use as well as self-defense use, right?
But it's also got enough of a thickness and heft for batoning, like you said.
It's not lightweight, it's not flimsy, and it's not a $20 cheapo knife either.
Yeah.
No, absolutely not.
And, you know, this is so unique that even on our side, we don't have anything like this.
So this is a collaboration that's just between you and me to really make a super high-performance blade that is an awesome machete.
And then we put it into two sizes.
The cool thing about that, that higher grind, we actually did something different.
So we do a very slight hollow grind.
And by using a bigger wheel, So we put on a larger wheel on there, between 14 and 16 inch wheel.
By getting that circumference right there, we can get a slight hollow grind.
So you get a really razor sharp edge, but you get a lot of meat behind it.
And it's a lot easier to resharpen.
We're not here to make axes.
We're here to make knives that can be an axe, that can also be a knife.
So it actually goes from Food prep all the way to batoning wood.
So that way you can survive off the night instead of just being one side or the other.
Right.
So it's very unique in that.
I love how you describe that.
It's a multi-purpose utility and survival tool.
Absolutely.
It's a once-in-a-lifetime purchase.
Now, this is the larger version.
This is the Extreme Outfitter Pro.
Now, what's the blade length on this?
I forgot the exact spec.
So on that particular one right there, you're looking at about 14 inches of blade.
Okay.
So in the ballpark of that, which makes it a real machete.
This thing is a clear brush.
And out here in Arizona, we have some tough brush.
We got a lot of shrub oak, chaparral.
We deal with some forest, but a lot of this brush is just gnarly.
Well, I've used it on bamboo here in Texas.
We have kind of smaller diameter bamboo that likes to grow in Texas and it just goes at them.
Or wild grape vines, if you're trying to clear wild grape vines, they're especially tricky because they like to flex and they don't stand still, you know, because they're hanging out of the trees.
So this goes right through them.
Trust me.
Well, see, and that's important.
People don't realize about bamboo.
I used to live in Houston, and we had bamboo down there.
And the thing about bamboo is just like you're cutting, you know...
Like a hard wood, almost.
Yeah, like a hard wood.
It's almost like bone shape.
It's like out here, we have cactus that are very similar to that.
And it's very tough.
Yeah.
And very hard to cut through.
And so that's very impressive right there, Mike.
Yeah.
Yeah, it goes right through the bamboo.
That was my first test actually, is to just take it at an angle, just like hack at an angle and boom, just clean, you know, right through multiple bamboo, you know, stalks or whatever they're called.
These are, again, available right now, healthrangerstore.com slash knives.
And John, I have to thank you and your family for working with us to put this together.
This has been over a year in the making.
I mean, you and I started talking about this in, I don't know, third quarter 2023, I think?
Yeah.
Yeah, it was a project that we both agreed on and we wanted to do something different.
So what you have right here is a limited run.
So this is a limited run of machetes and hatchets.
And for a lot of reasons, and we'll talk some more about that later.
But this particular, we wanted to build something that you could survive on and really pushing the envelope of the knife making world and of our own abilities to be able to produce something that you can live off of, that you can survive off of in any situation.
It's a self-defense tool if needed to be, but you can build a shelter.
You can chop wood.
Yes.
You can prep food.
Can I mention too?
You can do all this.
If you order before December 22nd, I'm sorry to interrupt, but people want to know, can they get these before Christmas?
In the USA, continental, you know, 48 states, if you order by December 22nd, you can get it before Christmas.
Yes.
That's what I've been told by our fulfillment.
See, and that's amazing.
That's amazing.
There's not very many of them left, so people should go on, get these, because once they're gone, they're gone.
True.
We were just talking about in the knife world, there's been some crazy news going on here and there, and we just got a notice from our steel.
Tell us about the steel, yeah.
Yeah, so our steel...
So the smelter up there in New York told us that the people that provide the chemical composition for MagnaCut and a lot of these CPM crucible steel.
So CPM means crucible powder metal.
And what's happening is that they just gave a 90 day warning warning notice and saying that they will have to shut their doors in 90 days because of economic reasons.
And we may lose one of the oldest steel mills here that used to produce these amazing powder metals been around since 1907. Well, that sounds like an emergency.
I mean, we cannot lose steel infrastructure in this country.
We've already lost too much other infrastructure providers, and we don't mine many rare earth minerals here in the U.S. either.
We still rely on China for a lot of that.
We need to save our steel industry, and I'm particularly concerned if they have interruptions in business or stop functioning, how are you going to get MagnaCut?
That's a great question because when you look at the steel industry, I mean, what's really hurting it and how does that kind of hamper our ability to get Magnica?
First, just stupid regulation.
There's so many stupid regulations in the steel industry that's made to drive it out of business.
We've had to deal with this a lot.
We've worked with these companies since 1973. We've been with Crucible Steel.
You know, once you lose this American-made steel, you really lose the heart of America.
And, you know, steel drives everything here.
And so, as far as getting MagnaCut, there's another, one more American-made steel company.
They mainly do, like, building steel.
But they do have some lines of tool steel, and they're looking to possibly pick up maybe MagnaCut, but only a few of these compositions and start producing it for our industry.
So that's why I suggest if you see these steels, buy it, because you may not get another chance.
It's one of the greatest American steel inventions.
It came out in 2021, and we're hoping that it doesn't go by the wayside.
But, you know, Carpenter Steel will probably pick it up.
We're hoping.
That's the hope.
But, you know, people need to stand up, and that's why I'm so glad that we have Trump in office, and we're starting to see this deregulation, hopefully.
The regulations are hurting all of us.
Basically, the regulators are weaponized against American businesses.
I mean, that's just the honest assessment of what it is.
But isn't it true that many other knife makers are beginning to adopt MagnaCut, and yet they don't have your heat treat method, which you told us the story before.
So just MagnaCut is not always the same because the heat treatment matters.
But aren't more companies picking it up because of its amazing characteristics?
I would say that everybody's picking it up.
It used to be an anomaly.
Nobody wanted to mess with it or test it.
We were one of the first ones to jump into MagnaCut.
It was very difficult.
It was unknown.
Because of what we've been able to do in MagnaCut and what we have shown the world, now everybody's jumping into MagnaCut.
Now we have a lot of hype behind it.
But the issue is that everyone's just following the same heat treat methods.
In fact, a lot of people are outsourcing to the same company for heat treat.
So you may buy a Benchmade that's MagnaCut or MKC or some of these others, but they're all heat treated at the same place.
Oh, really?
And you're sitting in the same blade.
Oh, yeah.
Now, hardly anybody nowadays does it in-house.
Nobody wants to mess with it.
Nobody wants to do that.
We like to do it because, by golly, we want to push the envelope.
And because of our Christian roots, we have a sign up there that says, whatever you do, do it for the glory of God.
That's what we try and do, and we want to push it, give the best product we can.
And the prices that you see right there you have on the website is a steal.
Honestly, for what it costs to get the MagnaCut, and prices are going up because of this new scare, it gives you the best that you can get.
Yeah, so I'm glad you pointed that out.
Here, healthrangerstore.com slash knives, you can see, you know...
The Extreme machete, it's a $1,000 blade, right?
And even like the Patriot hatchet, which I don't have here on my desk, but it's the same style of construction you and I collaborated on, especially on the length.
I wanted that extra length on the handle because the way I use it, I need a lot more leverage.
I'm like, you know, when I'm really going at something with a hatchet, I need that extra...
Pivot point.
I'm whipping it at the wood or whatever I'm cutting.
I appreciate you doing that.
It didn't add much weight to it.
I think you nailed the shape of the blade of that too.
Let me bring up a better photo so people can see this.
Here it is.
This shape, I think the utility factor of this blade shape is fantastic.
Both ends have their own uses.
And it's got enough heft to have some momentum behind it.
The etching that you do on it is gorgeous.
I mean, these are beautiful blades, not just incredibly functional.
You want to talk about the hatchet a little bit?
Yeah, absolutely.
So the hatchet, you know, we started in this...
This idea when we first came up with a tomahawk, and I always wanted to do a hatchet.
You know, a tomahawk's awesome for what it is, and I love the tomahawk.
But I wanted a tool that I could take out backpacking, hiking, camping, hunting, any of that.
And when you brought up that you wanted to do a hatchet, I'm like, okay, I'm all in.
Let's do this.
Let's make something really cool and different.
And, you know, there's a lot of cheap hatchets.
I mean, they use just...
Garbage steel, basically.
You know, we see the throwing hatchets.
And these can be thrown.
They're weighted.
So we did do that.
But I wanted something that could be a tool that could last forever.
So we came up with this whole design, and we worked with harmonics.
So we actually made a digital program and worked with the harmonics.
So that's why you see the slit up at the top.
So that slit that you see there, that hole helps with harmonics.
So when you're hitting and you're chopping wood, there's even other holes underneath the handle.
And all that works with the vibration of the steel.
And that way it disperses that energy.
So that way you're not taking in that energy.
It's not hurting your blade.
It's not going to cause it to break.
It just makes it extremely strong.
Even if you happen to hit a knot, not recommended, but if you happen to, you can go right through it.
Let me mention, these are all, people can see it here, these are all branded Health Ranger Survival Gear, HRSG. That is emblazoned on all these blades.
It's one of the things that makes these, this is a very limited edition, and this indicates that I was part of the design and testing of the blade.
Absolutely.
Thank you for doing that, John.
Well, you did a great job.
You had a lot of good ideas.
When I made the first one, you're right, it was short.
I'm like, okay, what do you think?
You're like, can you make it longer?
So we started doing the testing with that longer and it just turned out a lot better.
And I really appreciate all this feedback because, you know, It's good to have people in the field that know what they're doing and you have a brilliant mind, Mike.
And so this helps us putting our knowledge of manufacturing together with your skill and your survival skills really comes up with an amazing product that can be used, passed down for generations, but used in a survival situation.
And that's the main thing.
It's a serious tool.
This isn't your Amazon stuff.
This is something you can bet your life on.
Now some people say, well, you know, that costs more than a Glock or that costs more than this.
Yeah, well, you know, I'd rather bet my life on that because my life is worth it.
And number two, I can do so much with that.
And you never have to reload with your Extreme Machete.
Let me show people this now, because everybody's going to cry when they see this, because it's not for sale.
But, John, there's a really interesting story about this blade, but let me just show people first.
Here we go.
This is the windstorm in MagnaCut, and I think this is the only one that exists like this in the world.
I really value this, John.
This is an incredible accomplishment.
And what's interesting is that the way I was introduced to your company was I was a customer.
I found your company many years ago And the very first thing I bought was this design, Windstorm, but it was never available in a MagnaCut steel.
But I found this shape, this length, the weighting, everything that you've done with this, the thinning up here, The sword is fast, it's rugged, the self-defense capabilities of this are amazing, and it's a work of art.
Tell us about the Windstorm design.
Now, you do sell other Windstorm steel swords on your site, correct?
Yes.
Yes.
Yours is the first 001 MagnaCut Windstorm that we ever produced.
That is the full-length one, 24-inch.
It's a work of art.
It took so many years to get that right in that steel because, I mean, whenever you work with a different steel and getting out to that length.
And it's a two-handed design here, obviously, and I love the retention that you have here, the wrapping that you've got, but the two-handed design is just absolutely secure.
It's just the right length with the finger guard up here.
I mean, you can't ask for a better real-world blade.
If it goes Mad Max, this is what I want, okay?
That's all I'm saying.
I have to agree with you, Mike.
The blade is just wicked awesome.
I mean, there's nothing like it out there, especially MagnaCut.
You know, that blade is humbling because even with all the experience that we have, they're so difficult to grind just to get that curve.
I can only imagine.
There are a lot of curves on this blade, really.
Very subtle.
Yeah.
And everything has a point.
You know, everything in there is functional.
From the curve and everything, we follow old world, real world blaze that were very functional for its time.
And what people don't realize with all our knives, every single knife that we make, they're all hang ground.
Yeah, that's right.
They're not machine ground.
There's a person behind that grinder that is doing that grinding, and he's putting a bit of his soul in every knife.
And when we get into that windstorm, there is literally only three people that can grind it.
Myself, my brother, and my nephew.
And that's like, what, 10 years of experience to even approach something like that?
Oh, at least.
And then you have to have a knack for it.
So, you know, we're one of the, you know, just in our family and just passing this down, this American heritage.
And this is what, you know, I think that America needs to get back to.
It's heritage and training up family, getting them back into the business, into manufacturing.
You know, I would say that Humbly, that me and my brother and my nephew are one of the top 10 grinders in this country.
Wow.
Because that art is being lost.
There's a lot of people that...
You know, have given this up or have gone to machining and that's why you don't see swords because the machines, you got to have a massive machine and even when you have that, it just generates too much heat or the blade flexes.
You have to be able to adjust every single time while you're going.
That human brain is amazing.
I'm so honored to know you over all these years.
I'm so honored that you allow me to have input and that we can work together on this.
You're probably going to kick me for mentioning this because now people want to buy.
And this is like the hardest one to make.
But let me give out your website, DawsonKnives.com.
And on your website then, I just want to show people, you make many different swords and knives and bowies and blades and so on.
And yeah, see, rare plus unique.
That's the category, of course, that I like the most, rare plus unique.
And I remember...
Every time I would go on your site and try to buy the Windstorm, it was sold.
It was gone.
You don't have a robot factory churning these out.
These are crafted blades.
You have a very limited supply.
And frankly, they're gone quickly.
It's like...
You know, you might have one of what we're looking at right on the screen, like you might have one or two of these in stock right now, and then it's gone for a while.
Well, you know, it's all about quality over quantity.
I mean...
That's our name.
That's why we've been in business now 51 years.
It's quality over quantity.
We really work on trying to make American made something special.
I mean, we want people to pass these down.
We want them to be extremely functional, but works of art just because of the craftsmanship.
And so we're not going to turn out like 300 of these or 400 of these.
You know, that's not going to happen.
I mean, these are hang ground.
So that's why I tell people when you see a Dawson, it is something you can rely on and bet on.
I mean, we're not flashing the pan.
There's a lot of new companies that come out, you know, that are making knives here and there.
They come and they go.
We've been around since 1973. Yeah, and we've been around for this long, and we do it the right way.
Yeah, I'm not saying there isn't trials.
I mean, the economy has trials.
There's all these things.
But our God gets us through, and we have generation and generation that we train up into this art.
So that way, Dawson Knives will continue on.
We're going to continue making cooler, better stuff.
We're always pushing the envelope.
But the one thing your customers can be, rest assured, and all your listeners here, is that no matter what happens, we're always going to take care of you, and we're always going to praise Jesus Christ.
Amen to that, brother.
Amen.
Let me bring up this knife, which is the one that I think kind of made us both a little bit more famous.
This is called Escape from New York.
Or, I'm sorry, Escape from L.A. in this case.
I'm thinking about the movie now with Kurt Russell.
Yeah, no, that's what I was thinking.
Escape from L.A., Tactical Knife.
Now, people who know knives, they look at this design.
Yeah, show my screen again.
And they freak out.
They're like, what on earth?
What is this?
And what is this?
We call this the reverse bottle opener here, but as you know, this is a pry bar here.
Remember the day we talked about this and you sketched out what I was describing?
I was like, John, we need a knife that if you get stuck in Los Angeles and the power goes out, you've got to pry open windows and doors.
You've got to escape from the zombies.
You've got to cut door chains and stuff.
You're like, oh man, what's that going to look like?
I was just thinking, how are we going to make a fixed blade leather bin?
How is this going to work out?
I said, no, here's what I want.
I want you to be able to shove this pry bar under a window and then you can stand on the handle and jump up and down on it until that window opens.
Right?
Or you can use a hammer and you can hammer this thing into a crevice and you can pull on it and it won't break.
Oh my gosh.
Yeah.
I remember that.
I'm just thinking, you know, either Mike is really genius on this or he's lost it.
I don't know.
We're going to play around.
We're going to try and figure this out here.
There's a fine line between those two.
And then, so you built that knife, the first one, and then I remember you thought I was super crazy when I called you back.
I said, we need something that can hook onto lines, that can like hook things, because this, I imagine there are lines, there are power cables, there are things that the knife needs to grip on.
And we came up with this little reverse bottle opener hook thing.
And it doesn't take away from the blade at all.
No.
No, it doesn't.
I'm going to tell you what, that took a lot of engineering and a lot of designs back and forth so we could get that going.
Yeah, it's really an amazing knife, honestly.
It does all those functions really well.
It does a great job.
It's the only one of its kind.
And we have a video up of it on your site where it is like pulling out fence nails.
It's just pulling them out.
It's a pry function too.
Yes, thank you for mentioning that.
Yeah, it's an incredible pry function.
You got this pry bar in the front, which also, I've used it as a screwdriver, so it works that way too.
Yep, yep.
It's pretty cool.
What I encounter here in Texas, I encounter a lot of old fence posts where barbed wire has been hammered in using those U-shaped I guess you call them.
You know, they're U-shaped.
And this knife is perfect.
I can just go up, I can grip that, and I can pry those nails out using the reverse bottle opener feature.
And then as you showed in your video, you can also hammer through nails.
Not that we're recommending that you do it like every day.
You will eventually damage the blade.
But in an emergency, if you have to hammer through other steel, this blade can take it.
Yeah.
That was something my brother was really proud of because when we first cut this out, he's like, John, you've lost it.
I don't know what's going on, but you know what?
I'm going to test this because he wanted to test it.
He's like, I want to make sure every part of this is functional.
And before we put anything out, and it actually surprised him.
In fact, at the end, he was just like, I don't even know how I'm going to hurt this thing.
Just bring in those thick nails, and I'm going to just start hammering through them.
So he started pounding with a sledgehammer over that blade, and it's just cutting nail after nail after nail.
Yeah, I saw that.
And it's just a great design.
Yeah, it's just, who does that?
I mean, what knife does that?
I mean, it's incredible.
He was sold, so he has one.
I have one.
Oh, the coolest thing.
Okay, we have to get this video.
So we took one of those escape from LA's and we wanted to see if you were trapped in a building or something.
I mean, who knows?
The power's gone out.
You have this problem.
It's not your building.
You just were shopping there, right?
And you're finding another way and there's a locked door.
Well, this thing worked really good on commercial wood doors.
This thing worked good on metal outside doors.
This thing was incredible.
I mean, it took effort.
I mean, it wasn't easy, but it could be done.
And that was really cool.
And that's the point.
I mean, that's what this knife is all about.
And I want you to know, I gave one of these knives to one of my contacts that operates on the border of Texas.
And that was, I don't know, eight months ago or something.
And he, it's part of his kit now.
He won't go out without it.
And he finds a hundred uses for it also out in the field.
And I don't know if you know this, but In terms of the trafficking problem that exists in Texas, there are also cases where there's children that have been kidnapped, and there's people that have been tied up in trucks and things.
They pay money, and then the coyotes basically make them prisoners to hide them and smuggle them.
And this kind of tool is the very thing that you need at that last moment to cut the lines, or to cut the cables, to cut the...
The zip ties or whatever is like holding, you know, keeping these people prisoner.
And part of the job actually of the Texas-based guys that work the border, they save lives.
They're not just there to arrest people.
They save people.
They save children.
They save women who have been assaulted.
They save people who are dying from dehydration.
And these kinds of tools are a life-saving part of that whole operation.
I just want you to know.
You know, I really appreciate that, Mike.
And that's something that's very dear to my family.
And everything you said is absolutely true.
And I know that because my mom lives in Nogales.
I grew up in Nogales for most of my...
You know, teenage life.
And I still go down there.
And I've got family members that are on the Border Patrol.
One of them is in Bortec down there.
Another one is actually on the border in Douglas, Nogales region.
And, you know, what you were describing, I actually had a good friend.
I'm half Mexican.
My mom came here legally.
And so I have family in Mexico, family on this side.
One of my really good family friends was a federale.
And he wanted me to make him a knife, a special knife.
And so if he ever got taken, and which they do, these cartels do it all the time.
And you were talking about coyotes, they're all run by cartels.
And he actually did get taken.
He was actually in L.A., When it happened.
And he did have that knife, and he was able to get out.
Wow.
That's actual escape from LA. Actual escape from LA. But it's so important, and it happens all the time.
And you're absolutely right.
Having the right tools can save your life.
100%.
And it's not a joke.
You know, this is reality that is happening every day that a lot of people don't realize.
And you know, I've been a prepper for a long time, and before I found your company, which was now, I don't know, five years ago or whatever it was, I had bought a lot of knives from a lot of famous brands.
I had bought knives from Amazon, and I was researching steel.
I think 4065 is one kind of lower-cost steel.
I don't recall the numbers now.
But I was trying to find the highest quality steel I could find, the highest quality blades I could find.
And I would buy them, and I would get them.
They were props, man.
I could tell these weren't going to last a day in the field in Texas.
They look great on the website, but I never bought Lord of the Rings blade or Star Wars Jedi blade.
No, I wasn't into that.
I was trying to buy functional tools.
I just couldn't find anything that was worth it.
Until I found your company.
And then it's like, okay, this is it.
This is all about functionality, not about hobbits or anything like that.
You know, that's the thing.
It's got to be real.
And, you know, Amazon, you're not going to find real knives.
You're going to find, like you said, movie props.
That's what they are.
It's a movie prop with an edge on it.
And so you get a lot of China stuff coming in.
You've got a lot of things that are coming in from overseas, saturating our market.
And we have to realize...
That when you buy a blade like that, it might be sharp for a little while, but you're just basically leasing because that blade will break.
The edge will go.
You can't resharpen it.
It's just junk.
So you're going to buy more and more of those blades instead of buying one lifetime blade that you can pass down for generations.
Now think about that.
If I can pass this knife down for generations, the cost per that knife is actually significantly lower than buying hundreds of Chinese knives.
I'll actually end up spending more and then my kids will end up spending more where they could have this knife that dad bought that he passes down and says, you know, this was my dad's.
This is always performed.
That's American made.
I remember my, you know, America at this time.
Absolutely.
And also, what's the cost of your knife breaking when you need it?
Like if you have a cheap knife and it fails you.
Now you're in a very difficult situation.
And let me show you this knife.
This is part of my EDC. I'm sure you'll recognize it because there's only two American knife companies that I buy knives from.
And yours, obviously, is what we're talking about today.
This is the other one.
Do you recognize this?
Yes, that looks like a...
Is that a Spyderco?
Nope.
Benchmade?
Nope.
It's kind of hard to see there.
Oh, it's the one with the Crombat.
Yeah, Emerson.
You got it.
It's an Emerson Crombat.
Yeah, that's an Emerson.
Sorry, it's hard to see.
It's hard to see.
No, I get it.
But this is part of my EDC here, because obviously I can't put a sword on my back all the time.
But this thing also, Emerson.
The innovation that they demonstrated with that wave opener, that's the kind of thing that inspires me and I think both of us together to put so much innovation into the blades that you are making.
It's like we don't have to do the old way, the old pattern.
You know, we have new applications.
This is a different time.
We can innovate and that's what you're really good at doing, John.
Well, thank you very much, Mike.
And, you know, Ernie Emerson, he's done an amazing job.
I mean, all his stuff that he does, we've known him in the knife world.
Barry, that's my uncle, who started this knife business.
They're about, you know, the same age going through, and they were doing different things, but they're always friends, and that's the whole thing.
Because, you know, when you get together, it's not competition.
It's like, Hey, what did you come up with?
Oh, that's really cool.
What did you come up with?
Oh, that's awesome.
It's a really amazing community when you actually have real American knife makers producing American products here in the United States.
It's not competition.
Now you get these American companies, but they're producing it overseas or they're just trying to be the hype.
There's a lot of hype going on right now, but they're not giving you the bang for your buck.
What they're trying to do is make the most amount of money And trying to source these things over.
And at the end of the day, you're just not ending up with an heirloom piece.
And that's why I really like the old school knife makers and everything.
It was just a different time.
And we're starting to see some of that coming back.
Some of these knife makers are saying, you know what, I really just want to make something that's amazing that I'm happy to put my name on.
Yeah, and you do a great job with that.
I think you are the best in this business, and you've also been very humbly willing to work with me and my audience to make the kinds of functional utility, you know, survival-oriented or tool-oriented blades that this community needs.
And I just want to thank you.
And your family.
And it's an amazing success story that you've brought to us.
I'm so inspired by what you do.
And I just want to thank you.
You have significantly added to the lives of so many people around me that I've given these blades to, by the way.
I mean, I'll tell you more stories off camera, but you're changing people's lives in a positive way.
So thank you.
Well, thank you very much, Mike.
And if we have some time, I want to share a quick story.
And, you know, you were bringing this up.
Yeah, we're almost out of time.
So I apologize, but keep it short.
Yeah, I'll keep it short.
We went hunting just recently.
And, you know, elk hunt, seven days.
It was the last day we hadn't seen anything.
You know, we did everything that we thought.
We looked around.
We talked to people that we knew.
On the seventh day, you know, we're hiking up.
And this is over here, 5A. And we're tired.
And I just prayed to the Lord.
And I said, you know, Jesus, you know, I haven't turned to you.
I'm sorry, but I'm praying to you now.
If you just give me a chance at a bull elk.
I'll be very grateful.
So we're hiking up, you know, Dennis, you know, that's my brother with his son and You know, we're coming up to this pass and then I happen to turn and I see this giant bull elk just staring at me about 20 yards.
No joke.
And so I get ready.
I get my gun up.
I'm starting to put up and I hesitated for a little while.
I just hesitated just to make sure, you know, my brother wasn't taking a shot or something.
And I start getting that up and before I could take the shot, he runs off.
And I'm like, man, I missed that, you know, and I started thinking to myself, you know, that wasn't God's fault.
You know, he answered my prayer.
I just wasn't ready to receive my blessing.
And so next time I can't hesitate when my blessing comes.
I got to be prepared.
I got to be ready to receive my blessing.
Maybe he answered the elk's prayer.
The elk is like, don't let this dude shoot me.
Yeah, he's got me right here, man.
So what happened was I talked to my brother about it really fast and he's all like, yeah, thank you very much for telling me.
I'm not going to hesitate next time we're going to do this because he had taken a shot earlier and he missed.
And so we're driving.
It's coming up to, you know, sundown.
And I'm praying again.
I said, Lord, thank you for the first one.
You did awesome.
That was my fault.
I wasn't prepared.
If you give me one more chance or my brother, one more chance, I don't care who.
If you give us one more chance and you send them out, you know, I'll be grateful.
And right at the end, right before twilight, My brother sees it.
We're hiking out.
He just drops down, and I see him get ready, and he takes the shot.
And we ended up getting a really nice pull-out, a big one, right at the last day, the last minute.
And you know, God answers our prayers, and that's how we run our business.
If I'm good at it, it's because of Him.
And that's why I appreciate you so much, Mike.
I thank you so much for your faith.
You're my brother in Christ.
And, you know, we work together, you know, to help the Lord bring this kingdom, but more importantly, to do the best we can with our hands and to make sure that we have the best and God answers prayers and He's answered prayers with, you know, with our collaboration, you know, getting us to meet together and now making these amazing products that we get to share with your listeners.
Amen to that.
Thank you for all that you do.
And I always enjoy talking with you.
And let's get together over the holidays privately, you know, on a phone call or whatever, and think about what we're going to do together next year.
Because I know it'll be amazing.
