Welcome to this Prep with Mike video that's going to show you how to make an alcohol heater out of a little paint can, some isopropyl alcohol.
You can also make a little stove out of it.
You can boil some water.
You can cook with this contraption.
You're going to use some toilet paper and some isopropyl alcohol.
I've got both 91% here as well as 70%.
And these one-quart paint cans, which are, by the way, empty.
They've never had paint in them.
And you can get these online pretty inexpensively, especially when you buy them in volume.
And the reason this is so important is because, of course, we're going into the fall and then the winter.
You've got all these Europeans, especially, who are about to, well, freeze.
I mean, literally freeze to death.
You've got an uprising in the Czech Republic right now, in Prague.
You've got people in Poland lining up for days to try to buy coal in order to heat their homes.
You've got electricity prices through the roof.
In France and Germany and the UK, heck, in France, they're paying, I think, 1000% higher than what they were paying last summer.
So yeah, the situation is insane.
So here's what we're going to do.
We're going to show you how to build this heater slash stove.
And then I'm going to line it up for you here as well and show you how it works, how to make it, and the whole deal.
But first, a couple of disclaimers.
Number one, you'll probably notice I have my fire extinguisher here.
There it is.
And it's fully charged.
You can see that in the green.
So every time I do this, I have fire extinguishers.
I've got toilet paper here, which I know is flammable.
I'm very much aware of that.
There's a purpose for this.
I'll show you.
I've taken safety precautions.
However, I have to, as a disclaimer, tell you that you should never do this indoors and that you should obey all local fire codes and all common sense precautions.
And if you were to do this, do it at your own risk.
Because I can't be responsible for you burning yourself up if you're going to do this.
But I'm going to show you what I believe to be the safest way to do this.
And remember, you can also use 70% alcohol, which is safer to burn than 91%.
But I've got a stove here that I've already been burning.
And it's perfectly fine.
And that's using 91% alcohol.
So I'm going to show you that here also.
But just understand, this is not something you should do indoors, okay?
Don't burn your house down.
Be safe.
And never, ever, ever leave any fire unattended.
So if you're boiling a pot of water, which I'm going to show you here, I've got a couple of ammo cans just as a stand.
There's no ammo in them.
They're empty.
I'm just using them for vertical height because they're the right height, and I've got a little grill there.
It's going to boil some water, but remember, do not leave these stoves unattended, and also be careful of children and pets around all of these items, okay?
So those are my disclaimers.
With that said, let's get started.
Let me show you how this works.
The first thing that you have to do is take a roll of toilet paper and effectively shove it into this can.
Now, that's not gonna be possible when you have the cardboard in the center, which is why I showed you this.
You gotta take the cardboard out of the center, and you also have to remove some of the toilet paper.
And that is a little bit tedious to do it.
I find it's easier to use a knife to get things started.
Just use a knife like that, and then you can take the cardboard out.
Of the center.
There you go.
Pulls right out with a little bit of toilet paper.
Now this is still too large to shove into this can.
I mean, I went to public school and I still know it doesn't fit.
It's kind of like a scene out of Idiocracy right there.
So what you've got to do here is you've got to unroll some of this toilet paper and you've got to do quite a bit.
And of course you can use this toilet paper for Regular teepee purposes.
Okay.
So you're going to take this.
You're going to shove it in this can.
There we go.
See how it's shoving in there?
There it is.
All right.
Finally.
And there's a little wick out here, too.
All right.
Once you've got that shoved into the can...
Then you're going to fill it with alcohol, and it takes quite a lot of alcohol to get into the can, you know, to go to the top.
So I'm going to use 70% in this case, so I can show you the difference between 70% and 90%.
Alright, that's about full.
Alright.
And by the way, this 70% alcohol, you can get this online for about $12 a gallon, if you're curious.
Don't pay more than $12 a gallon for that.
Now, in this status right here, you could just put the lid on it, pop the lid on it, and then put it into storage in your car.
Or wherever you need this emergency device.
Okay, so that's one thing you can do.
Or you can go ahead and light it, as we're going to do here.
And I'm going to use this electric lighter, electronic.
So there we go.
We've got a fire of 70% alcohol.
Maybe move these a little bit further away.
So it's 70% alcohol burning right there.
Now, that's both a heat source and, of course, we're going to boil water with it.
And, of course, practice all common sense safety measures around it.
I like to wear gloves when I'm working with gear that might be, you know, on fire or hot.
But you can take a lid like this and you can just put it on top and the fire's out.
Now, understand the top of that's going to be hot, obviously.
So, you know, watch yourself in terms of safety.
And it kind of seals the lid, too, as it cools.
All right, so that's how it works.
Again, I like to use these USB chargeable lighters because I can charge these with a solar power generator, and I don't need matches or anything like that.
I don't need lighter fluid.
It's just electricity, and these are called arc lighters.
You see this?
Oh, you see the arc?
Yeah.
Okay, so boom, it's on fire again.
All right.
And if you're looking for, you know, a good solar panel system, I mean, see those solar panels right back there?
EcoFlow is the brand that I was demonstrating here earlier.
You can find that video on my website, PrepWithMike.com.
Alright, so once we have one of these rocking, we can use it to not only heat an area, again, don't use this indoors, but you could get warm around it, you know, in an outdoor area that's enclosed so you don't have wind, but you can also boil water and you can cook on it.
So let's set that up next.
Alright, so as you can see, we've got water here.
And I just set up this little grill system.
I don't know.
It's just what I had sitting around.
And, of course, these ammo cans, which are empty.
You wouldn't want to do that with live ammo around.
Next, I'm going to take this can, light it back up again.
There we go.
Sorry about all the noise.
Okay.
Show you.
There we go.
Alright, so now we're cooking with gas, but well, alcohol in this case.
So there we go.
So that's going to boil our water right there, obviously.
In the meantime, let me show you what the 90% looks like here.
This is the 90% alcohol, so it's going to burn, you know, a little bit stronger.
Oh boy.
Yeah, look.
Look what's smoking.
That's because I've never...
I've never...
That's the paint burning off this grill.
So there you go.
A little bit of paint smoke happening right there.
But this is what 90% looks like right here.
So it's a little bit stronger than the 70%.
You know, obviously a lot more heat content contained in that.
But, you know, you can decide which alcohol you want to use, the 91% or the 70%.
And I'm feeling the heat from where I am right now just filming this, by the way.
So it's definitely got some heat in it.
Turn that one off and just take a look at what it's doing to the water.
Not boiling it yet, but you can tell it's going to.
It's certainly burning the paint off of that grill.
We can make some soup out of this puppy, huh?
Alright, we're now seeing that the water is about to boil.
You can see that.
I'm not going to continue it.
But you get the idea.
You can boil water off of this.
And by the way, these stay cool to touch on the bottom.
So it's not hot down here, although I still recommend using gloves.
It is hot on top.
And then there's our pot of steaming hot water.
Ready to make, you know, hot chocolate, hot cup of coffee, instant coffee, hot macaroni and cheese or whatever keeps you warm in the winter, folks.
Put yourself some freeze-dried onions and some quinoa, boil up something.
That's how you're going to stay warm because that heat will stay, of course, warm in your body.
This is how it's done.
So one of the big benefits about this strategy is that you're storing something, alcohol, that can be used for multiple purposes.
So yes, on one hand, it's an antiseptic.
It can be used for emergency first aid, right?
On the other hand, it's also a source of condensed heat.
And you can unleash the heat, you know, to cook food or to warm your hands or maybe heat like a shed or something outside.
Again, I wouldn't want you to light this fire inside your home, but some kind of an outdoor shed or garage that's detached from your house or something.
That might be okay, but again, use common sense on that.
The point is, this is a dual-use substance that serves multiple purposes, and that means you can use your storage space more efficiently because instead of having to store two separate things, you just store this one thing, and you can use it for one or the other, obviously, depending on where you need it.
Now, remember then that these can also go into your car or vehicle.
You would hammer the lid tight.
You might want to strap some matches to it.
Just have some matches or some kind of a lighter mechanism so that you can light that in an emergency.
If you were trapped in the winter, let's say your car got stuck in a snow drift or something, and instead of freezing to death, you might be able to use this to save your own life, maybe even to boil some water, maybe to cook some food there if you've got a bug-out bag in your car.
So all of this has a very practical purpose.
This system works.
Just be safe in the way that you use it, exercise common sense and safety, and you'll be all right.
So that's my take on all of this.
Hope you enjoyed this little demonstration.
You can get these paint cans at hardware stores as well as online.
They're one-quart cans, and they shouldn't cost you more than about $4 or $5 each if you buy them in some kind of quantity.
