Natural News dumps all ad networks to protect reader privacy

Hear ye, hear ye, all natural news readers and advertisers.
Oh, we have a major announcement.
You're going to love this.
We are dropping all ad networks, including Google.
In fact, it's already been done.
It's been done for about 30 days, and we're now officially announcing it.
This is awesome.
We got rid of all the ad networks across not just natural news, but all our websites, Newstarget.com and the dozens of others that we publish.
We eliminated all the ad networks.
I mean, just dumped them.
And we went to a homegrown, in-house, static ad solution that protects your privacy.
Now, why is this such a big deal?
And also, by the way, if you're a sponsor or an advertiser, you now have new opportunities to advertise with us in a very, very effective way.
And I'll talk about that later.
But this is mostly a message to our readers.
You'll notice that when you go to Natural News, you don't see autoplay videos.
Don't you hate that crap?
When you go to a webpage and somebody's video pops up and starts burning your bandwidth and playing some stupid video that you didn't even ask for?
We don't do that.
Yeah, we don't do that on purpose.
We don't have pop-ups.
We don't have pop-unders.
Some of these newspaper websites, you go there, and it's like total screen spam.
There's everything popping up everywhere and underneath your page and on top of your page, and there's sound coming from your browser that you didn't even ask for.
Which freaking tab has the sound?
You know, and you're trying to shut it all down.
No wonder the ad blockers are so popular these days.
Everybody's downloading ad blockers, which I think is awesome.
I encourage you, download an ad blocker, install it as an add-on or an extension to your browser, you know, Firefox or Chrome or Safari or whatever you are using.
Install an ad blocker.
I think it's great.
I love the idea.
Our ads, by the way, because they're no longer served by networks, they don't spy on you.
You know how Google AdSense spies on you?
And it tracks your surfing behavior and it builds a psychological profile of you.
And other ad networks too, like DFP, DoubleClick for Publishers, they spy on you.
And so we just ditched them all.
We got rid of them all.
And as a result, we're serving our ads in-house now from our own servers, which means that they don't get blocked by ad blockers, which is pretty awesome.
So we have a quality ad system where we have no animations, no videos, no pop-ups, just quality relevant ads that we control.
Now we have 100% control over them, finally, and the ad blocker doesn't block them.
And when I say 100% control, what I mean is before with ad networks, like pharma ads would slip through the cracks and they would get in there and people would see pharma ads, you know?
Drug ads.
Which is very frustrating to me because I'm so opposed to big pharma.
And so we would ban them.
You know, we'd ban the ad URL and then there'd be another ad that would sneak through and we'd ban that one.
There'd be another one.
It was like chasing demons around the block.
It was insane.
Chasing little demon gremlins with a baseball bat or something.
That's what it was like.
Anyway, that's history now.
Thank goodness we have 100% control over our ads at this point.
Now, not the entire site.
We're still reworking some of the older archived articles into this transition.
But everything that's been published for the past 30 days and since is all converted over to this new system.
Which is just awesome.
So, we respect your privacy.
We don't want ad networks spying on you.
We don't want Google AdSense code on our webpages.
We don't want to be a backdoor for the NSA. So we just gutted all the code, got all that crap out of there.
That's awesome.
So anyway, we hope that your experience on naturalnews.com and other websites is very rewarding and a pleasing experience where you know you're not being invaded with screen spam.
You're not being tracked and snooped on or surveilled by network ad systems.
You're not having your space polluted with pharmaceutical ads or other ads from unethical companies that will crop up everywhere.
So we're really, really, really working hard on making your reading experience on our websites very pleasing and respectful.
Because we, you know, we respect you.
We don't treat you like an idiot.
We don't treat you like the other websites treat you.
You know, a lot of other publishers, even mainstream publishers, it's just nothing but spam when you go to their pages.
They do anything to maximize their revenue, you know?
We're just not into that.
We'd rather you have an enjoyable experience, and even if we make less money doing it, which we probably will under this system, probably make less money, I don't care.
I really don't care.
If we had to eliminate all ads to make it a pleasant reading experience, I guess we would do that.
As long as we have your support at our store, the Natural News Store, which is at store.naturalnews.com, by the way, then we've got the revenue to keep going.
And we can do this kind of thing.
We can cut out all the network ads.
We can block Google AdSense and block DFP and all the other ad networks.
And we can still do just fine, thanks to your support.
So, got to thank you for that.
You see how we're giving this back to you, you know?
Too many of these online publishers, they're just grubbing for every last dime and penny they can scrape out of your eyeballs while you're on their page.
And it's just sick.
It's pathetic.
It's unethical.
We just don't follow that.
I want to give you a pleasing experience.
Now, for advertisers, if you're a sponsor or you want to be a sponsor, this means you can now advertise with us, help support what we do, and instead of buying impressions, you're buying calendar reservations for spots on the page.
So the page has a certain amount of real estate, a certain number of ads.
You can buy those spots.
You can reserve them for a month.
Or six months or whatever you want.
So that's how we sell the ad space now.
It means your impressions will vary based on the popularity of our articles, but over time it all evens out anyway.

And we have a new ad department, too, that handles all this.

And I apologize to any of our sponsors who had difficulty during the transition away from the networks.
It was a very difficult transition to get all those networks out of our lives, off the site, and we had to actually...
Do a bunch of equations to equate, you know, calendar time versus impressions.
And it was kind of, it was a complex scenario.
But we made it through.
And advertisers are really loving the new system.
And now we can invite new sponsors who want to join us and make their reservations.

Anyway, bottom line is we're working hard always to improve our website and to make it a better experience for our users and readers.
And we appreciate all of your support, sponsors and readers and customers alike.
Without you, none of this would be possible.
And by the way, this is amazing.

The only reason I haven't announced it yet is because I'm too busy in the lab training on new instruments, and I can never seem to have enough time to film the announcement videos there.

So instead of wasting money on stupid things, we put it into the lab to buy the instrumentation, to look at what's in the food so that we can share that information with you and we can break new ground.
We can revolutionize the food safety industry.

That's on top of the ICP that we have on the inorganic chemistry side for heavy metals that we've been running for two years.

This website ad system, which is static, served in-house on our servers, no longer tied to any network, such as Google AdSense or anything like that.
So your privacy is protected, you're going to get better quality ads, and you're not going to be interrupted with animations or videos or pop-ups or any of that crap.
I mean, we never allowed that stuff anyway, but sometimes an animated ad would slip through the system without our permission.
This happened a lot.
And it was very frustrating.
We've been trying to solve that problem for a long time.
Ultimately, the solution was just ban the networks.
The networks don't respect...
If you're a publisher, just as a side note, if you are an online publisher and you sign up with some ad network that tells you Yeah, we will make sure we don't serve any animated ads to you.
Let me tell you, they're completely full of crap.
They all do it.
They all serve animated ads, even when they tell you they won't.
They all lie to you.
Every single one of them.
Just so you know.
So don't waste your time.
Don't even mess with them.
They lie to you constantly.
And they exploit your pages and exploit your viewership, your audience.
And they just, they have no ethics whatsoever.
So we got rid of them.
Gone.
Gave them the boot, kicked them out the door.
Bye-bye.
We don't need you anymore.
We respect our readers and our users.
And we're going to do the right thing as a publisher to have sensible, high-quality, selected sponsors with ads that don't invade your eyes, your visual space, your experience.
We don't want to invade your experience.
We want to teach you and empower you and give you access to information.
We don't want to scream at you with a pop-up automatic playing this and that.
That's just nonsense.
I don't even visit those sites anymore.
Too distracting.
