I'm very happy that we can dedicate the show today to the latest from Geoffrey Hinton because he has been a very particular kind of figure since his resignation in May 2023 from Google.
He was one of the developers for Google AI. He was free to speak finally about the risk of AI. and the deliberate misuse of AI by malicious actors and he has really made the world In his eyes,
maybe not such a better place with his own discoveries because he is a pioneer but he's kind of like now saying he's not certain anymore about having gone into this direction.
He is kind of saying to us, well, maybe I regret what I've done.
The Telegraph in the United Kingdom gave this title just in the last 24 hours regarding what he has said.
And this is, of course, one of his last declarations, one of his last statements, but the most disturbing one, like I said, the Telegraph, Godfather of AI says it could drive humans extinct in 10 years.
Well, and this is the speech he gave while he was actually receiving the Nobel Peace Prize a couple of months ago, but he said this on Thursday at an interview that he gave on the British radio, on the The BBC, the British Broadcasting Corporation, and he has said that artificial intelligence could wipe out the human race within the next decade.
That is pretty disturbing, and in fact, this is the first time that I see both, you know, Telegraph is like a classical British newspaper giving the same kind of warning that Russia Today gives, because Russia Today also picks up on this On this statement that he recently made, Godfather of AI uses new warning to humanity.
The chances of artificial intelligence causing human extinction within next 30 years have increased.
Now, it's not anymore within 10 years.
With the Russians, they are pointing out more on a 30 years kind of time span.
But they're saying artificial intelligence could lead to human extinction within three decades, with the likelihood of up to 20%, according to Jeffrey, a pioneering figure in AI and a recipient of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics.
This marks an increase from a 10% risk, he estimated only a year ago.
During an interview on BBC Radio 4 on Thursday, Hinton was asked whether anything had changed since his previous estimate of a 1 in 10 chance of an AI apocalypse, and he said, not really, 10 to 20%.
This led to the show's guest, Edgar, the former Chancellor of Science, Yavid, to whip.
