For those of us in the business who have been keeping track of this story, this is one of the saddest cases around.
Let me explain. | |
Wendy Williams has been one of the most popular and I think talented performers in radio and TV for the longest time.
I'm not going to go through what makes her connect, but it works.
And it did work. | |
All of a sudden, and by the way, you know there's this documentary that's coming out very soon.
All of a sudden, it seems, Things went south for Wendy Williams.
There were reports of her illnesses, her various conditions.
She seemed to have what is referred to as Graves' disease, some hyperthyroidism, this proptosis or exophthalmos where her eyes are bulging.
And immediately people said, drugs, crazy.
The story is about ex-husbands or husbands and...
That you can go through the blinds and the entertainment dark web.
Not dark web that you think, but there is another version of what's happening in the world of entertainment and the like, and politics, that never makes it to the...
How do I say this? | |
It makes it to the level of consciousness that we are used to.
In any event. | |
In any event. | |
But what's happening right now is something which is so important for us to pay attention to.
It's the notion of guardianships.
And now people, the best example was the case of Britney Spears.
Take somebody that you believe is, well, that you know is rich, has income, that might be, Exhibiting behaviors that are different, daft, odd, peculiar.
Not necessarily mental illness quality, but still bad, strange, weird, odd, whatever the particular phrase is.
And then go to a court and have this guardianship or conservatorship created For their own good.
Go in, wipe out everything they have by virtue of your caring for this person, and then when all is said and done and there's nothing more to take, and this once thriving, exceedingly rich and famous individual, once there is nothing left, then you move on and you say to yourself, well, it's time for me to take my talents elsewhere.
And that's precisely what's going on right now.
We have this thing in this country about mental illness.
We have this thing where we look at people and we say, oh, they're acting odd.
And because they're acting odd and because they're acting strange, we can do whatever we want with them.
We don't have to worry about their rights.
They have no rights. | |
They're crazy. | |
We really have this, there is this absolute, how do I say this?
This absolute Vileness that we have.
This medieval way of treating people who might be acting differently, either because of mental illness or because of drug abuse.
And what happens is, once they get into this framework, and once they begin to look as though they're not able to care for themselves, or maybe they're just...
Compound, or that particular situation is compounded by something medical, which makes the alleged mental illness seem worse, and it all kind of fuels each other.
Then what we do is we turn her back completely and just say, they're nuts.
Another lunatic entertainment drug addict, some crazy person, another Judy Garland, another whoever.
And we hear about them all the time.
We hear about them all the time.
It's almost, you want to know who is not crazy, who is not drug-addled, or who is not addicted to pills or alcohol, or some weird psychological maladaptive behavior.
Nobody is going to look at this.
Nobody is going to care about this.
Nobody, because it hasn't enriched critical mass yet.
But it will be. | |
And there are a lot of great investigative reporters and the like who are looking into this notion of conservatorships and guardianships and that.
But also, the thing about it is that you're going to pull her out of the darkness.
This is Wendy Williams.
We're going to look at her.
We're going to pity her.
We're going to feel sorry of her.
And then forget her. | |
It's as though we lose capacity to show any kind of...
And I could go much deeper into this.
But we have been so habituated into ignoring how people are treated that we don't care anymore.
And add to it. | |
Make them a sports person.
Make them entertainment.
Make them whoever. | |
And in a weird way, we like to see them fall because we're sort of jealous.
We like to see their collapse because it's like, it's rubbernecking.
It's watching yet another collapse of a human being.
And when all of this is said and done, we sit back in this ash heap, this detritus of what was a human being who made a lot of people happy, and then we just move on.
But mark my words. | |
Listen to what I'm saying.
And it starts specifically, more importantly, with the Britney Spears case.
Now, I am not an expert, certainly.
I know there was a time when she was exhibiting behaviors.
Remember, she had some kind of a collapse or some type of outrageous activity at a gas station or something.
But here's the thing. | |
In order for you... | |
To have your possessions, your wealth, your control removed from your control.
To have you cut off from this.
To have your ability to control your life just severed by people who are looking out for your best interest.
This has got to stop. | |
Because in my perfect world, you can be crazy as hell!
And still not lose autonomy and power and financial control.
You can be absolutely crazy to a point.
And if there's going to be something that's going to look out for you, that has to be extremely stringent and limited and short-term, not two tickets on the gravy train to whoever...
It controls your assets and your wealth and your fortune.
Not only that, the way we look at mental illness and the way we gawk at people who perform in ways different than we do, we kind of love that.
It's sick. | |
There's a combination of factors here.
Many, many issues within this.
Conservativeships, guardianships, mental illness, the way I think we kind of thrive parasitically off of people.
We love to see how terrible...
We love to see, oh, look at this one.
Oh, look how bad she looks.
Who is this? | |
Who was this once attractive and sexy actress?
Now look at her. | |
She's a bag lady in Ventura.
It's sick! | |
And we get a kick out of this.
And the reason why we get it is because the people who put that out, the paparazzi and others, know that we like this, so it keeps feeding each other.
We're vultures. | |
We're cultural vultures.
We are, in essence, the fuel or the accelerant to this lunacy.
Does this make sense to you?
I hope it does. | |
Don't go crazy. | |
And don't appear to go crazy if you've got a lot of money.
Alright? | |
I'm going to warn you. | |
Alright dear friends, have a great and glorious day.
