[00:01:32] I know you've been waiting for me to give you my appraisal, my review of the Barbie movie. [00:01:37] Well, today's your lucky day. [00:01:39] This is it. [00:01:41] And what I want to do is a couple of things. [00:01:44] First, Before you see this, and I want you to see this, and I think little girls will love it because they won't understand what it means. [00:01:55] I'm not sure most adults know what it means. [00:01:57] I'm not even sure the people who made the movie understand what it means. [00:02:00] I don't even think if it's worthy or susceptible of meaning anything. [00:02:04] It is the smartest, stupidest, best, dumb, worst movie ever. [00:02:10] And it's fascinating, but not for the reasons that you think. [00:02:15] And people have overthought this to death. [00:02:19] People are looking at this. [00:02:21] It's like the story where people sometimes listen too much to rock lyrics years ago. [00:02:29] I think it was Eight Miles High. [00:02:31] I think it was Eight Miles High. [00:02:33] Somebody thought it was about drug use or something. [00:02:35] It was about a plane. [00:02:37] It was about a guy in a plane. [00:02:38] Eight miles had nothing to do with this. [00:02:41] Or, better yet, people... [00:02:43] Who don't understand. [00:02:44] Who think they're listening to something that's beautiful. [00:02:47] Like every breath you take. [00:02:49] You know that story? [00:02:50] It's about stalking. [00:02:51] I read somebody told me one time that this was one of the most favorite songs at receptions. [00:03:02] Oh my god. [00:03:03] What are you talking about? [00:03:05] Anyway. [00:03:06] It goes to show you. [00:03:07] Overkill, underkill, depending upon how you look at it. [00:03:11] Listen carefully. [00:03:12] I'm going to give you my Appraisal limit. [00:03:15] But first, let me ask you, of course, to like this video, subscribe to the channel. [00:03:20] Just trust me, like it, you're going to like the video. [00:03:23] I'm often wondering, how do you ask me to like it? [00:03:25] I don't even know who you are. [00:03:27] Anyway, just do me a favor. [00:03:28] Like the video, subscribe to the channel, hit that little bell. [00:03:31] So you're notified of live streams and new videos. [00:03:35] And more importantly, very, very importantly, very, very, very critical. [00:03:38] Listen, listen to these sagacious and sapient words from our sponsor. [00:03:44] Listen, listen, listen, listen, listen, listen, listen, listen, listen, listen, listen, Okay, today my wife and I went and we saw Barbie. [00:03:54] And a couple of things I'm going to tell you. [00:03:55] First, I want to do everything I can to bring the movie industry back. [00:03:59] I want people... [00:04:01] To go to theaters. [00:04:03] There's something about going to a theater. [00:04:05] I don't want to sound like one of these old people who say, you know, I like the smell of a book. [00:04:11] I'm not saying that. [00:04:13] But there is something to be said for listening to or listening to a movie also, but also seeing a movie and being there in the actual theater itself. [00:04:24] It's just like now. [00:04:26] And a lot of the youngsters. [00:04:29] Have missed this. [00:04:30] But there's something that's incredibly great about listening to music on a great sound system. [00:04:36] Used to call them hi-fis years ago. [00:04:38] They were great. [00:04:40] They were incredible. [00:04:42] But because we're listening to AirPods, you miss that. [00:04:46] So I'm not saying this just because I'm just waxing needlessly nostalgic. [00:04:53] I'm telling you there's something to be said for that. [00:04:55] And there's something to be said for going to a film. [00:04:58] And Margot Robbie is a great actress. [00:05:01] She's really good. [00:05:02] She's good. [00:05:04] Kate McKinnon? [00:05:05] Boring. [00:05:06] She's the same. [00:05:08] She's terrific at imitating, but you realize there's no depth. [00:05:11] She's not an actress. [00:05:12] There's no nothing. [00:05:16] Kristen Wiig? [00:05:18] Another one, too. [00:05:20] Very good mimic. [00:05:21] Lousy actress. [00:05:24] Will Ferrell? [00:05:25] He's Will Ferrell. [00:05:26] No matter what you do, you get Will Ferrell no matter what. [00:05:30] The actress, America Vespucci, or whatever, she's very good, who plays the mother. [00:05:35] Very good. [00:05:36] That's it. [00:05:37] We're not talking Academy Award. [00:05:38] At least, I don't know what the Academy Award even means today. [00:05:42] But here is the story, and this is why it's good. [00:05:45] You ready for this? [00:05:46] Listen. [00:05:47] It still celebrates girls! [00:05:50] If you're listening to me right now... [00:05:53] And you are roughly in my generation or a little younger. [00:05:57] Barbies meant something to you. [00:06:01] We can go into the history of Barbie and how, or whether Barbary, Barbary. [00:06:06] Barbary is a law of bar exam preparation course. [00:06:10] Barbie may actually... [00:06:16] Reinforce stereotypes that are actually deleterious to young girls. [00:06:20] You know, weird shapes. [00:06:21] Okay, you want to play that? [00:06:23] You want to play that? [00:06:25] We had G.I. Joes. [00:06:27] I don't even know why. [00:06:29] We did in the footlocker, the big G.I. Joe. [00:06:32] Not the little one, the big one. [00:06:35] What does it mean? [00:06:36] I don't know. [00:06:37] Did it celebrate war? [00:06:38] I guess. [00:06:40] It's a doll. [00:06:42] Lighten up. [00:06:44] But little girls liked it because they liked it. [00:06:47] Did it reinforce stereotypes? [00:06:49] Well, if you look around today, not enough. [00:06:52] Because if there's anybody who adheres to these stereotypes, that adherence never makes it actually to their body. [00:07:01] We are awash in obesity and destruction of dermal real estate with hideous tattoos. [00:07:09] There wasn't a tattoo in the movie! [00:07:13] At least I don't think. [00:07:16] That's a personal thing to me. [00:07:17] I think tattoos are the most stupid thing. [00:07:20] They're hideous. [00:07:21] And they're unnecessary. [00:07:23] And it just goes to show you how people are mindless dolts? [00:07:34] Fools? [00:07:35] What do you want to call these people? [00:07:36] Who go out and discard themselves so they're cool? [00:07:39] But that's for another topic. [00:07:41] It's a celebration of girls. [00:07:44] Yeah, yeah, yeah. [00:07:44] They talk about patriarchy. [00:07:46] Do you think half of the crowd in that movie theater is going to understand what patriarchy means? [00:07:49] And by the way, there's a lot to be said for that. [00:07:52] You know, when listening to it, it sounds almost like something Mary should have been explaining to Lou Grant. [00:07:57] You know what I mean? [00:07:58] To Mr. Grant. [00:07:59] It was 70s-ish. [00:08:02] It really was. [00:08:03] It was a good message. [00:08:06] About women can do this. [00:08:07] Women can be president. [00:08:08] Women can be... [00:08:09] Well, maybe not president yet. [00:08:12] Well, with all that Russian collusion, Hillary, but it was a good message. [00:08:18] I'm sorry. [00:08:19] It was about a mother and a daughter that come together. [00:08:22] The kid's a complete turd, you know, the usual, that snotty. [00:08:27] But there's good. [00:08:30] And there's a message. [00:08:31] It's kind of sci-fi-ish, ripping the fabric into portal and going back to a different dimension. [00:08:38] I like that stuff. [00:08:40] It's 2001. [00:08:41] It's Kubrick. [00:08:42] It really is. [00:08:43] If you think about it, I mean, it's innocent, the subject matter. [00:08:45] But it teaches kids about time and distortion and reality. [00:08:49] And Barbie becomes... [00:08:52] She's in the world. [00:08:56] Little things. [00:08:57] You know how Barbie never drinks. [00:08:58] She just has empty cups and all of a sudden she feels the water. [00:09:02] And it's a really great story about how this kid who had her... [00:09:08] Who had the Barbie doll is going through some problems and the angst, the contretout, I like that, the pathos, the agonistes that this child is going through actually converts and violates the blood-brain barrier of this other dimension of Barbie land. [00:09:34] It's pretty, I mean, it's deeper than you think. [00:09:37] I don't think a kid's going to get this. [00:09:39] But the best part is it's a celebration of little girls and girls being girls. [00:09:43] And grown-ups. [00:09:46] Who want to wear pink and go out for a girls' night out? [00:09:50] What's wrong with that? [00:09:52] We have men walking along with their schwads hanging out in locker rooms of women's... [00:10:00] This women in... [00:10:03] My God. [00:10:06] These are women. [00:10:08] Actual women. [00:10:10] And there was, I believe, a trans actor, I think. [00:10:15] You don't really know. [00:10:17] And the reason why is because sometimes they don't say, da-da-da-da, trans actor. [00:10:21] You say, you know, that voice. [00:10:24] See, that's the hard part of being a trans actor, because you don't know. [00:10:30] You don't know. [00:10:32] Have you noticed how every... [00:10:34] TV show has a biracial family. [00:10:38] Everybody. [00:10:39] Cable TV company, you know, potato chips, this, everything. [00:10:44] There's always a biracial. [00:10:45] Never a white family, a white, no, God, no. [00:10:48] It's always biracial, which is fine, fine. [00:10:51] And then sometimes you'll say, hey, let's have more trans, transgender actors and actresses, if you can even say this. [00:10:58] Well, how do you know? [00:11:01] Sometimes you can't tell them to say, you know, I think... [00:11:04] No, he's not. [00:11:05] Oh, he's not? [00:11:06] Oh, sorry. [00:11:08] What if you're pegged for being transgender and you're not? [00:11:12] Is that appropriation? [00:11:14] Trust me, they'll find a way. [00:11:16] Look, if people can find a way to object to sound of freedom, they can do anything. [00:11:25] Okay? [00:11:28] But what is interesting to note, Is how many people love to overly complicate Barbie. [00:11:38] They love to complicate it. [00:11:41] What do you think about this? [00:11:43] What do you think? [00:11:45] I've been through this my whole life. [00:11:48] In my generation. [00:11:49] Listen to those lyrics. [00:11:51] I remember one time, was it 7th grade? [00:11:54] Blood Rock. [00:11:55] D-O-A. [00:11:55] About dying? [00:11:58] Blood Rock? [00:12:01] My parents are very, as you would say, cool about it. [00:12:04] Is this song about people dying? [00:12:06] Yeah. [00:12:07] Oh, okay. [00:12:10] Didn't make a big deal. [00:12:11] If you play the song backwards, you can hear Source of the Devil. [00:12:17] I didn't hear that. [00:12:18] They were doing that then. [00:12:21] They've been talking about interpreting music since the beginning of time, but kids are looking at it. [00:12:25] They say, this is great. [00:12:27] Interesting story. [00:12:29] You know the actor Michael, is it Madsen or Madsen? [00:12:33] He played, he was Mr. Pink or whoever that was in Reservoir Dogs. [00:12:37] Remember the torture scene? [00:12:39] Spoiler alert! [00:12:40] Remember that with the cop? [00:12:41] Okay. [00:12:44] He was also the dad in Free Willy. [00:12:47] So when he would be at various venues or occasions, kids would say, my daddy, look! [00:12:53] This is years ago, look! [00:12:54] And the father would say, oh my god! [00:12:57] The father would see the homicidal killer from Reservoir Dogs, but the kids saw the father in Free Willy, from what I hear. [00:13:09] This goes to show you intellectual overkill. [00:13:11] It goes to show you how a lot of people go out of their way to make things more complicated than they really are. [00:13:16] But the bottom line is simply this. [00:13:18] It's a celebration of girls! [00:13:20] I don't care about the patriarchy. [00:13:22] Girls acted like girls and dolls and no tattoos and they're just girls and gender and binary, damn it! [00:13:33] Binary! [00:13:35] Girls! [00:13:36] Girls! [00:13:36] The boys were a little, well, it's a different story, a little stupid, but you know what? [00:13:41] No problem. [00:13:42] Hey, truth is a defense. [00:13:45] It's still, what is it, a billion dollars a month? [00:13:49] I doubt. [00:13:50] I doubt that. [00:13:51] Just like Oppenheimer. [00:13:55] People never heard of Oppenheimer until now. [00:13:57] But I digress. [00:13:59] So you know what? [00:13:59] Go see it. [00:14:01] Go see it. [00:14:02] And if you've got a little girl, take her. [00:14:05] Well, not too young. [00:14:06] I mean, some of this stuff. [00:14:07] Because she's not going to get it. [00:14:09] She'll just see pink and colors and dogs and people waving. [00:14:13] Hi, Barbie. [00:14:14] Hi. [00:14:14] Little cars. [00:14:15] That's all they'll see. [00:14:16] And that's all it is. [00:14:18] Because that's all Barbie was. [00:14:20] Because when you take away all this interpretation and breaking it down, it's just a doll. === Listen and Follow (00:35) === [00:14:31] And so are you. [00:14:32] But only if you like the video, subscribe to the channel, and hit that little bell so you are notified. [00:14:39] And also, remember to listen and follow And patronize. [00:14:46] And just listen to the brilliant words of our sponsor. [00:14:53] Because they make all of this possible. [00:14:55] And I thank you now. [00:14:56] Now if you couldn't, you would. [00:14:58] Brighten my northern sky is.
