[00:01:31] I am nothing short of fascinated with the transmogrification, the evolution, the changing, the shape-shifting, Of CNN and the prototypical historical heritage usual media that we know. [00:01:52] I am beyond nonplussed, gobsmacked to an extent over how things are changing drastically. === Cnn's Legacy And Change (09:11) === [00:02:03] And there's two reactions I have to this. [00:02:06] Number one, regarding Mr. Chris Licht, who was... [00:02:13] Stewarding the helm of CNN first. [00:02:17] You are in one unique position. [00:02:20] Why is that? [00:02:22] CNN is the lightning rod. [00:02:26] CNN, and by the way, for those from my generation, around 1980-ish, you know, right around that early 80s, when CNN became CNN, it was the greatest thing anybody's ever seen. [00:02:39] Larry King! [00:02:42] There's never been anything like Larry King ever. [00:02:45] 9 o 'clock every night, appointment, Larry King, Bernard Shaw, Peter Arnett, that other one. [00:02:54] I mean, it was something else during the Gulf War. [00:02:58] It was CNN. [00:03:00] This is CNN. [00:03:01] Oh my God, it was it. [00:03:05] And Ted Turner was a genius. [00:03:08] Ted Turner, who came along and said, I'm going to start my own network, and I'm not necessarily going to follow the same rules. [00:03:15] I may not start exactly the top of the hour. [00:03:17] I may go five after. [00:03:19] This was the time of cable, which was the greatest thing in the world. [00:03:21] I remember I saw WCW Wrestling, Superstation, WTBS, Gordon Soley, my hero and friend, on Georgia Championship Wrestling. [00:03:32] It was fantastic. [00:03:34] It was wonderful. [00:03:37] And then CNN was, oh, plane crashes. [00:03:40] That was it. [00:03:42] There was Sirius put on CNN. [00:03:44] CNN! [00:03:48] It was it. [00:03:49] Nobody could get near it. [00:03:51] Every person was like from Central casting these, you know, Cronkite-esque types. [00:04:03] And then, I don't know what happened. [00:04:06] I have no idea what happened. [00:04:09] It became the lightning rod. [00:04:11] It became the... [00:04:12] I don't know what it became. [00:04:14] And I'm not saying that's fair. [00:04:16] And I'm not necessarily lauding that fact. [00:04:19] But certain acquisitions came. [00:04:25] Chris Cuomo. [00:04:29] Don Lemon. [00:04:32] Brian Stelter? [00:04:35] Brian Stelter? [00:04:40] And if, I mean, you might like their opinions. [00:04:44] It wasn't news per se, but something happened a la Fox with these two countervailing positions. [00:04:53] Fox and this. [00:04:54] Oh my God, what did we do? [00:04:56] Where did we go with this? [00:04:57] Oh my God. [00:04:58] Well, we don't know. [00:05:00] But it's fascinating. [00:05:02] And then it just, something happened. [00:05:07] Fox, in terms of the business model, just took off. [00:05:10] I just heard recently regarding this Dominion case, you have $8 billion in cash on hand. [00:05:15] $8 billion? [00:05:16] What? [00:05:17] And CNN, remember CNN Plus? [00:05:20] They didn't even start. [00:05:22] They didn't even put the... [00:05:24] Remember in the old days how they would paint the name of the company on the glass? [00:05:28] Nothing! [00:05:28] It's gone! [00:05:29] Gone! [00:05:30] And I didn't understand why people were clapping. [00:05:33] Yeah! [00:05:33] I said, those people have jobs. [00:05:36] Innocent people there who are line producers and folks, they have nothing to do with politics. [00:05:42] It's just a job. [00:05:43] What are you so happy about? [00:05:44] And it got to be really serious. [00:05:46] This enmity. [00:05:51] And you can quote me on that. [00:05:52] How do you spell that? [00:05:53] I don't know. [00:05:56] And with Dominion, people were just clamoring. [00:05:58] They wanted to say, fuck, pay up. [00:06:01] This is the end of conservative. [00:06:03] I don't know if it's the end of it. [00:06:05] When did it become, how did it come like this? [00:06:08] What did that happen? [00:06:09] Anyway. [00:06:11] So now, Chris Licht, this poor guy, I mean, and you read these stories, I don't believe what I mean. [00:06:18] And there's a walkout, and the rank and file is screaming, what are you doing? [00:06:23] What are you doing, Chris Licht? [00:06:25] I don't know. [00:06:26] What are you doing? [00:06:28] Okay. [00:06:29] Well, I think this is one of the most brilliant moves ever. [00:06:34] Did you hear this? [00:06:35] The quotes are fantastic. [00:06:39] The quotes from CNN itself. [00:06:41] One of the ones, I love this. [00:06:43] Charles Barkley says, I want the show to be non-political. [00:06:47] You know, Gayle King is going to be a straight shooter. [00:06:50] I'm going to be a straight shooter. [00:06:52] I know she's going to be fair and honest. [00:06:54] And you know I'm going to do the same thing. [00:06:56] What does that mean? [00:06:57] I don't know. [00:06:58] I think that decorum and courtesy and kindness always work. [00:07:02] Okay. [00:07:03] Don't scare people with these promises of politeness. [00:07:06] For whatever you do, please don't do this. [00:07:08] Be very careful. [00:07:09] Don't do this. [00:07:10] I know people want to do it right away. [00:07:12] They love so much. [00:07:13] Oh, we're going to show each other the love and respect. [00:07:17] Well, you know, within reason. [00:07:20] You know, within reason. [00:07:21] Don't go too crazy on this. [00:07:24] A little bit of a... [00:07:26] Okay, so all I'm saying is, look. [00:07:28] Good luck and see what happens and whatever. [00:07:31] What I'm telling you, Is that this is one of the most brilliant moves because people are going to want to tune in just to see it. [00:07:40] Don't you love it? [00:07:42] I mean, when they say, I want to be non-political. [00:07:46] Oh, one could be a bit sarcastic and say, well, it wasn't political before. [00:07:54] Why should it be now? [00:07:55] But it's brilliant. [00:07:57] And this goes to show you the fact that things are changing now. [00:08:01] What used to be considered The news, throw that model away. [00:08:07] It's completely different. [00:08:10] Capisce? [00:08:12] Completely, totally different. [00:08:16] Everything, whatever you thought, whatever your ideas were about, whatever, it's done right now. [00:08:23] And let me tell you where the real future, not even the future, the reality, is here. [00:08:31] You're looking at it. [00:08:32] Not necessarily me. [00:08:33] No. [00:08:34] This. [00:08:35] This. [00:08:37] You're seeing, I'm sorry to say, the last vestiges of a medium, of a format. [00:08:45] Think of it as, dare I be so cruel, in some respects, as a star who burned out years ago, thousands of years ago, whose light has not reached us. [00:09:00] But you still see the star, but it's not there. [00:09:05] It's not there. [00:09:08] You remember it. [00:09:10] The light hasn't hit you. [00:09:12] And to the people, I want CNN and everybody to obviously keep working. [00:09:17] I know this sounds Pollyanna-ish, or Pollyanna-ish, I guess, but I think the more opinion, the better it is. [00:09:28] Give me something to bounce off. [00:09:31] Give me something, just because I don't necessarily care for it. [00:09:35] Here in New York, we have every conceivable type of cuisine you can imagine. [00:09:41] Eight different variations of Mexican, from Oaxacan to Sinaloa to whatever. [00:09:49] And whether you like or don't like Mexican food, the very fact that there's a multiplicity of flavors and ideas and cuisines means A good culinary world. [00:10:00] And so I like the same thing with opinion. [00:10:03] I may not watch it, so what? [00:10:05] My opinion, my views are rather unique, rather sui generis, so consequently I look accordingly to what I find interesting. [00:10:14] But what we are seeing right now is something that I'm telling you is going to be sheer genius. [00:10:20] They're going to be watching this. [00:10:21] And this is also, if this even remotely works or is... [00:10:26] Perceived to be working. [00:10:28] You're going to be seeing this everywhere. [00:10:31] Everywhere. [00:10:32] A complete and total refabrication, a transmogrification, a reformulation, a reiteration of everything that you thought news programs was all about. [00:10:45] So keep an eye on this. [00:10:46] Let's wish everybody good luck. [00:10:47] I mean this. [00:10:48] I mean this sincerely. [00:10:50] The more opinion, the better we are. [00:10:52] Alright? [00:10:53] Terrific. [00:10:53] Now, as long as there are no more Competitive competition food shows. [00:10:59] Cooking competition shows. [00:11:01] Those are the bane of my existence. [00:11:03] And they are an example that society is imploding. [00:11:06] In any event, have a great and glorious day. [00:11:08] Don't ever change and mean that sincerely.
