Show and theme and meme, but lucky for us, we had, it was all male, and we knew not the meaning of the word cool.
There was no such thing as who was in and who wasn't and who was cool.
Never understood that.
If anybody even so much as tried to say, we're better than you, we're the cool ones.
Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
Whether there were jocks, or we had groups of people who fancied, they kind of coexisted.
We had the academic times, we had the athletic times, but it was a coexistence.
It wasn't supremacy over the other.
Well, last night, I think it was last night, in New York City, there was something called the inner circle.
And I want to just tell you, I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this.
And this is something which I wish I could show you.
And let me explain this to you.
First, as you may or may not know, conventional media platforms, as we know it, are over.
It's over.
It is done.
We're going to talk a lot about that.
What was CNN and this latest thing with Gayle King and Charles Barkley.
But there are people in the news business who were from the days of Huntley and Brinkley and, you know, Murray Kempton, especially with newspapers.
Pete Hamill and Jimmy Breslin and Westbrook Pegler.
These were the last, and I used to know these guys, the last of the newspaper in New York.
At one particular point, New York had 8, 10, 12, I don't know, different...
Papers that were existing.
That were prevalent.
In any event.
I found out something.
Do you know why Walter Winchell and these people used to wear fedoras?
Matt Drudge wore.
I don't even know if Matt Drudge is still with us.
I don't know whatever happened to him.
If anybody's ever seen him.
I don't.
Whatever.
But he wore a fedora and a windshield.
And the reason for that is that in old newspaper places, there would be, a lot of times the actual typesetters, the people who would be doing the type, would be above sometimes this area.
And these fine filaments from the shavings of the...
Types that would float and would be seen and would be available.
To make a long story short, people would wear fedoras to keep this from hitting them.
I did not know this.
You probably did.
I did not know it.
But I met the last group of these folks.
And they used to meet at this one particular Irish pub once a month.
And I was invited, and it was like nothing you've ever seen.
This was the Wild West.
This was newspapermen, Mike McAulary.
Well, Breslin, there was nothing like Jimmy Breslin.
Nothing.
Pete Hamill tried to be more of the erudite, but Breslin was hardcore and just beautiful.
Well, then they gave way.
To the news folks.
And then the news people, Roger Grimsby and Bill Butel, and before that it was, you know, the local folks.
And they were the stars.
They really were stars.
This was when TV, during its nascent period, and the people who were in that particular genre, the people who were in the journalist world at the time, these folks, interestingly enough, were, for lack of a better word, The only stars in town.
And they had this thing called the Inner Circle.
And it started like in 19...

Imagine a Christmas party where the HR people come forward and you don't know who these people are.
Maybe you've been invited to a Christmas party and you see these terrible skits and somebody will yell, Jerry!

They're living in, they think it's 1965, and they think they're on TV, and they think they're cool.

The hippest, the cognoscente, the intelligentsia, the journalista, you know, the roundtable, I mean, they are living in this.
I'm going to say one more thing and then I'll be done with it.
They practice Almost all year for this horrible thing.
And it's like five hours long.
It's the long...
It is so bad.
It is horrible.
And it's only for them.
So they can say, like, this is great.

I think I've been three times, maybe, maybe four.
Never again.
It gets worse and worse and worse.

Now you're asking the question, what is this about?
Let me tell you and let me explain to you why what we're doing now is so important.
This, this is something that's been around for a long time.
It's somebody talking to you.
You're watching something.
You're watching a screen.

Maybe you've got headphones on.

Maybe you've got that before.
It's broadcasting.
