If you want to watch something that is of no importance politically, watch a rally.
Watch a political rally.
Watch a bunch of people going to listen to somebody they already agree with.
It's a waste of time.
It doesn't mean anything.
I told friends of mine, I said, you're missing the point.
They said, no, no, you don't understand.
These rallies are terrific.
Look, look at all these people.
They love the speaker.
The speaker they're coming to see.
Doesn't that make sense?
Do you ever go to a concert and see an arena filled with people who don't like the band?
No.
Rallies mean nothing.
Rallies and political...
Festivals that reiterate and perseverate and continue the same.
And by the way, this goes left, right, whatever the party is.
It doesn't tell you anything.
If you want to learn about politics, see what the enemy is saying.
See what they're writing.
Watch their shows.
Read of what they say.
Understand what they're pushing.
I see this all the time.
People say, oh, that's ridiculous.
That doesn't make any sense.
No, you disagree with it.
Nobody's asking what you agree with.
You're missing the point.
Politics is beautiful.
Politics, ciphology, the study of elections, has something to do with what you like.
And it has something to do with what you think is important.
If there's one thing you've got to learn, it's that.
There's two things.
Policy and politics.
Policy and elections.
Do you want to talk about the issue itself?
Do you want to talk about whether something that's being bandied about in the news is...
Worthwhile or important or critical or right or wrong.
Fine.
Go ahead.
Politically, it's a different story.
First, who's voting?
Who's voting?
Who's coming out to vote?
Do you have that covered?
If nobody votes...
See, New York City, for example, our elections, our mayors, are in a city where nobody votes.
We have 8 million people that don't vote.
It's the wildest thing.
You can get 67% of four people.
It's wild.
So we don't have pluralities.
We don't have great plebiscites.
We have like four people deciding the course of a city of 8 million people.
So you've got to understand the idiosyncrasies of the place you're talking about.
That's important.
Next, ask yourself, is this a swing state?
What's going on?
What are the issues?
And what are the issues that the other side thinks are important?
Not what you think are important.
What do they think?
See, nobody gets this.
People fight this.
They think, well, I'm right about this.
And by the way, the number one rule of politics is lying.
Lie!
If you're in a state that votes a particular way, don't tell them what you believe that's contrary to what they think.
Whether it's guns or abortion or churches or whatever it is, know where you are.
It's not a one-size-fits-all area.
And more importantly, and this is the bottom line, and this is what nobody understands.
And I mean nobody.
When you speak to people and you're running for office, tell them what you believe in.
Tell them, give them something to dream.
Give them something to believe in.
Give them a worldview.
Give them a hope.
Give them a fantasy.
Lie if you have to.
I don't care.
But don't...
Attack the other side.
Forget the other side.
Don't treat a rally or a political convocation as a roast.
Don't go up and make fun of the other person.
They know that.
It doesn't make any sense.
Because remember, who's watching you?
The people you want.
And this is the final point.
This is the most important thing I can tell you.
Listen to me and listen good.
If there's one thing you remember, remember this.
There are three people, three groups of people in every election.
The people that are going to vote for you come hell to high water.
The people who are going to vote for your opponent come hell to high water.
And then the ones in the middle.
And in the case of Republicans, you've got some independents, you've got some uncommitted, and you've got some, maybe some Democrats that can be poached, maybe they're on the fence, maybe they're not sure.
But those are the people you're talking to.
You don't go and reiterate and perseverate and re-asseverate those things which people already believe who are going to vote for you in the first place.
And you don't waste your time talking to people who hate your guts.
It's the person who's thinking, go ahead, I'm listening, either I'm undecided, I may not vote, I may not have ever voted, tell me why this is important.
Tell me something I don't know.
Speak to me.
Tell me something.
And when you speak to these people, make sure you tell them about an America or a France, if you're in France or wherever you are, but tell them a worldview that they like.
Don't be too specific.
Talk about an America where the government is there primarily to protect its citizens, to make sure they're okay.
To make sure they're safe.
Domestically, from foreign invaders, foreign assailants, foreign threats, internal domestic health.
Tell them.
Government is your servant.
Government is about traffic lights and potholes and garbage and public schools and public education and public libraries and the police and the fire department and helping you.
Be avuncular.
Be loving.
Explain what government is about.
Give them something where everybody can say, I like this guy.
No matter who they are.
And they will always see their particular worldview in what you're saying.
They will, like a Rorschach test, they will say, he's talking about that thing I believe in.
Not necessarily, but under the generalized rubric, perhaps.
You want to talk about the Constitution?
Be careful with that.
Everybody sees the Constitution through their own eyes.
Through their own frame of reference.
Be very careful with that.
Be very careful.
Be very careful when you say words like certain aspects of America.
America should have no qualifiers.
Our.
You talk about our and we.
Now they may say, oh, we, you mean you're we.
No, no, no.
Some people are going to get it wrong no matter what.
If you listen to me, You will do far better than anything you've done before.
Oh, and by the way, and this may hurt the most, many of you have TV shows and news platforms you may like.
And that's great.
And that's groovy.
But those people are not running for office.
They're not running for office.
They can't do anything for you.
And the bottom line is simply this.
If you want your elected officials to do something, It takes a lot more than merely going on some popular show or fashioning and posting some pithy, cutesy tweet.
Governmental action is what you need.
You know what I mean?
Think about what I've said.
I've thrown a lot at you.
A lot for you to digest.
