Liberty Hangout - Kaitlin Bennett - Dems For Life Aired: 2019-10-25 Duration: 06:19 === Progressive Values and Pro-Life Consistency (05:51) === [00:00:00] I identify very liberal. [00:00:01] I am also a socialist. [00:00:03] I live in San Francisco. [00:00:05] I am also the founder and executive director of Pro-Life San Francisco. [00:00:08] We're seeing increasingly there's more young people who are holding more progressive values but are also very pro-life because we can see that's inconsistent to say we support equality of all human beings, we support human rights for all except for the pre-born human beings. [00:00:26] You're an atheist, vegan, LGBTQ plus ally, and pro-life. [00:00:30] That's right. [00:00:31] Explain this to me. [00:00:33] I did not read that last part. [00:00:35] Yeah. [00:00:35] That threw me off. [00:00:36] Yeah, that's why I have this 22-week old fetal model. [00:00:39] I am a registered Democrat. [00:00:41] I identify very liberal. [00:00:42] I am also a socialist. [00:00:44] I live in San Francisco. [00:00:46] I am also the founder and executive director of Pro-Life San Francisco. [00:00:50] We are a millennial-led grassroots activist organization operating in arguably the most pro-choice culture in America, possibly in the world. [00:00:58] And one of the reasons that we're here today is I'm joining with Democrats for Life and we're calling on them to take a position on abortion that represents the majority. [00:01:06] Even the vast majority of millennials and Democrats want to see abortion more restricted, especially at this particular age. [00:01:12] I'm so sorry. [00:01:12] I'm so sorry. [00:01:13] I don't want people to run it. [00:01:15] I'm so sorry. [00:01:16] But the vast majority of them want to see abortion restricted, especially at this age. [00:01:20] This is a 22-week fetus, so in most states in America, you can have an elective abortion for any reason you want, up until 24 weeks. [00:01:26] And this is the exact age that's actually targeted for organ harvesting by fetal tissue companies that are looking to profit off of the sale of these body parts. [00:01:36] So I'm very concerned. [00:01:38] Obviously, this is a viewpoint that's very silenced on the left. [00:01:40] I think it's very dangerous on the left because they hold all their power through the abortion lobby, which only Panderson is. [00:01:46] I want to cut you off because I want to ask you this question. [00:01:48] When I talk about being pro-life, 100% of the time people say, well, it's because you're trying to shove your opinions of religion down my throat. [00:01:58] What do you say to that? [00:01:59] What does it mean to be such polar opposites within the community, I guess? [00:02:05] Totally. [00:02:05] And I can see why people think that it's contradictory, but for me, it's just a consistent application of the values that we've already established as a culture, as a society, from across the political and religious spectrum. [00:02:16] It doesn't matter if you're secular or you're Hindu. [00:02:19] Most people agree that killing people is wrong in most circumstances. [00:02:24] And I'm just attempting to be consistent in that application. [00:02:28] Yes, of course, there are circumstances when it's just to protect yourself. [00:02:32] Or there are, of course, nuanced conversations about killing a born person. [00:02:36] But the point is that it has to be consistent if we're all equal. [00:02:39] And I do believe in human equality. [00:02:41] I love it. [00:02:42] I love it. [00:02:43] It's perfect. [00:02:44] Thank you. [00:02:46] You said you were a pro-life Democrat. [00:02:48] And I asked you, I said, usually when Democrats say I'm pro-life, they just mean they cut it off at the third trimester. [00:02:56] But you said, no, I'm pro-life all the way. [00:02:59] What's it like being a pro-life Democrat? [00:03:01] Yeah, it's definitely hard, but we're seeing increasingly there's more young people who are holding more progressive values but are also very pro-life because we can see that's inconsistent to say we support equality of all human beings, we support human rights for all except for the pre-born human beings. [00:03:18] It's the consistent response to say we're against abortion for all cases through all the pregnancy. [00:03:24] So a lot of people say something a lot that I've seen in the news lately and what people say is what if the child had a mental disability or a physical abnormality, they shouldn't be able to live or the mother shouldn't have to take care of them. [00:03:40] How does that make your heart feel? [00:03:42] Oh, it's absolutely heartbreaking. [00:03:44] When somebody presents that to us, like for me, I've been doing this full time a couple years and I go to college campuses nationwide talking to students about this. [00:03:53] Whenever somebody comes up and says, you know, it should be okay if, you know, there's a severe abnormality. [00:03:58] Yeah, it's heartbreaking because you would never, ever, ever consider ending somebody's life, you know, who was born, who had, you know, whatever abnormality. [00:04:08] Yes, it's hard. [00:04:09] Yes, it's unfair. [00:04:10] It can be unfair, but we don't have that right to take away somebody else's life because of who they are. [00:04:17] That's ableism, you know? [00:04:19] And again, with the Democratic Party carrying the banner of equality, there's no reason why we should be supporting that. [00:04:27] So I have to ask, why do you still stay with the Democratic Party, even though they're progressively getting crazier with their pro-choice views? [00:04:35] What keeps you in the Democratic Party? [00:04:37] Well, I lean more independent for that reason because for me, the main issue is abortion. [00:04:44] I think that there's, you know, both sides are working to make great progress on various issues. [00:04:49] But at the end of the day, for me, you know, I want to see human rights advanced. [00:04:53] I want to see, you know, whatever side is their goal is to advance human rights, equal dignity, and respect for all, like, I think that we need to be pushing for that. [00:05:04] So with the Democratic Party, they do a good job with that in most cases. [00:05:09] So that's the appeal I see there, is that they are actually, you know, working towards, you know, supporting the disenfranchised and helping make those ends meet. [00:05:20] They just have to tweak one little thing. [00:05:22] Yeah. [00:05:23] Yeah. [00:05:24] So it's just, I want to see them be consistent in that view. [00:05:27] So until then, I am an independent until I see that change be made.
