We're going to talk about Paul the Apostle, the Jew who targeted the Gentiles with the root of Jesse who would reign over the nations.

Language and beliefs and background.
As the Roman orator Horace said, captive Greece took Rome captive.
The mightiest empire in the world had won militarily, but Greece had captured Rome in philosophy and in spirit.
The mightiest empire in the world had been built.
It was into this Greek culture that the Apostle Paul was born.
Already for 500 years, Greek philosophy had been considering life and death, immortality in the future.
And Paul was able to take these Greek philosophical concepts as starting points to develop his own understanding of what Jesus taught about life and death.
Paul used the Greek language, the Koine language, for his writing and for much of his speaking.
He traveled the Roman roads right across the known world and enjoyed the Pax Romana, the Roman peace.
And so it was that Paul in the environment of Greek philosophy and Roman peace was able to travel from Jerusalem.
Paul adopted the idea of logos from Philo, who was the Hellenistic Jew and other Gnostic groups.
That's where he got it from.
That's what he means by all of this Greek influence.
He's talking about the Logos.
Jerusalem through to Rome, from the most remote part of Turkey through to the Greek cities of Corinth.
Important parts come in here.

But there was another, much stronger influence on the life of Paul.
Like his father, Paul was a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin.
After he finished synagogue school in Tarsus, Paul came here to Jerusalem to do his graduate studies with Gamaliel, the most famous Pharisee of his day.

This is from the origin story of the world's greatest missionary.
As a Pharisee, Paul would have studied the Torah, the Jewish law, and would have been familiar with the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Old Testament.
The Pharisees had developed in the second century BC and were Orthodox Jewish people known for their piety and their sense of separatism.
They called themselves the chosen ones, the holy ones.
There were 365 negative commandments that they kept one for every day in order to devote themselves entirely to God and to be holy in their living.
They believed that they were the Chosen ones mentioned by Malachi in his prophecy.
They opposed the modernist traditions of their day, the Hellenist influence, the influence of the Greek culture upon the Jewish faith.
It was expected in the day of Jesus that the Pharisees would be the best living of all people.
Looking back, we believe there were about 6,000 Pharisees here in Jerusalem when the Apostle Paul first came as the young man Saul to study here in Jerusalem.
Paul's training as a Pharisee was very strict.
He had to know the Old Testament in detail and all of the law by heart.
In all of that Old Testament, I go over all the context of the prophecies about ruling over the Gentiles in the Old Testament.
And Paul knew all of it.
And his new Messiah creation that he came up with from those prophecies was about being rejected and going to the Gentiles and ruling over them with fear and obedience.
But it's all Pharisee.
This is all coming straight from the Pharisees and Paul.
Right.
So if you're an intelligent person, you have to open your mind to the possibility that he was tasked with this.
This was his mission.
Right?
Right?
Secret double agent.
I mean, they talk about it.
They brag about it.
The rabbis.
That Paul was a double agent.
You know, they sent him to Rome to get rid of all the Christians from Palestine.
Right?
After his training, he returned to Tarsus and missed the most significant event in Israel: the public ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
Shortly after, he came back here to Jerusalem to become a member of the Sanhedrin.
A great honor for a young man at 30.
He was going to join the Sanhedrin at 30?
That's how high-level he was?
The Sanhedrin was the supreme civil and legal court under the first century Jewish system.
There was no higher body in the land.
And Paul, as a very young man, was elected to this.
This was a very significant appointment.
He was elected because of his zealousness.
He was wanting to make sure that all liberal elements within the world of the Jewish faith were being stamped out at that time.
He was therefore a persecutor of the Hellenists and determined to stamp out all heretics.
It was under this approach of stamping out heretics that he decided that he would persecute the people that were known as the followers of the way.
That was the terminology that was used of Christians in those days.
And despite the worst of the persecutions that came, God decided to intervene.
And in the worst of those times, God came in a very special way, in a way that Paul was not expecting on a road to Damascus.
So the Pharisee that never even knew Jesus is the one where we have the oldest Christian writings coming from.
and who basically the oldest writings developing the whole idea of Jesus as a Messiah.
Nothing sketchy but...

Paul is, for sure.
Yeah.
Although he didn't know any of the gospels or any of the biographical details or doctrines in the gospels because they hadn't been written yet.
Those weren't written until at least 70 AD with Mark the first one.
So that makes it 40 years after the supposed crucifixion.
This is the best God can do is come up with a gospel 40 years after something happened.
40 years?
You think everybody's remembering word for word dialogues and speeches and Jesus' preachings and sayings?
No way.
Well, he never discussed the earthly Jesus, never talked about his ministry on earth.
It was all about the celestial Jesus, right?
Allegorical.

Almost describing him as like a logos character.

And this is edited by Mark Nanos and Magnus Zetterholm, two prominent scholars, along with others like Paula Fredrickson and a number of others that have pioneered what they call the radical new perspective on Paul.
And it's this radical new perspective on Paul that has largely fueled an emergence of a sect of Messianic Judaism.
So Christians, really, they're believers in Jesus, who now identify as Jews practicing Torah observant Judaism as followers of Jesus.
Like Dr. Michael Brown.
And this is based upon this scholarship.
So it's a rereading of Paul that posits Paul as an actively practicing Torah observant Jew who is essentially reaching out to the nations and some form of what is argued that some form of a Noahide movement.
Oh, oh, so Christians were meant to be Noahides from Paul all along, like that rabbi clip I have says that Paul was approved to go teach Noahides to the rabbis.
Remember that one?
I don't have it at my fingertips right now.
I'm thinking how I can search to find it.
Where he's appealing to what he calls the righteous of the nations to posit their allegiance to this Jesus who is Jewish, but who as the Redeemer of Israel, that this redemption therefore extends to the nations.
And so one of the key elements of the radical new perspective on Paul scholarship is a definition of phraseology such as when Paul uses the term under the law, which you find at various points in his letters.
The radical new perspective says that what Paul is doing is he's distinguishing between Jews and non-Jews, meaning that under the law is a Jew.
That's what that phrase means.
That means you're a Jew because you're under the covenant of Sinai, meaning you're under the law, as it were, and that a non-Jew is not under the law.
And this is how they explain the argumentation that Paul has in Romans of, you know, what advantage is a Jew.
And Paul says, well, very great because they have the covenants and the promises and everything else.
But if I am a Jew, but I act as a non-Jew, he says in Romans, how am I any better than a non-Jew who acts like a Jew?
Meaning if I'm a non-Jew and I do what which is righteous, I am a Jew in truth.
But if I'm a Jew in reality, ethnically meaning, but I don't follow the law and I swindle people and I do all this other stuff, how do I have it?
So he basically makes a polemic against his own people, saying that they're all hypocrites, basically, and that those who have true faith will follow Jesus.
And so this radical new perspective not only deals with Paul, but it also seeks to Judaize Jesus.
And it seeks to create a Jesus that is within the framework of later rabbinic Judaism as a kind of a proto-rabbi.
Here, this is what the rabbinical Judaism sees him.
Going around basically giving, you know, wisdom teachings of Musar and acting out the role of the expected Messiah, you know, the one who will rise up to fulfill the line of David.
And so there's a little bit of, well, not a little bit, there's a lot of fantasy that goes on that I discovered.
So I was a pastor for about eight or nine years in an evangelical non-denominational church.
I wasn't a lead pastor.
I was an assistant pastor.
I wrote about my story.
Anyone who wants to learn about my journey and what we're talking about tonight, there's a book that I wrote, published back in August called There's No Such Thing as Magic Blood.
Great title of the book.
Anyway, you get the point.
Jesus was Noahides.
Paul was teaching Noahides to people.

Paul's the apostle to the Gentiles.
Paul, one of the things Paul's really, really squirrely about is Paul doesn't want his Gentile converts or whatever you want to call them, his Gentile affiliates to convert to Judaism or to become Jews.
Because if they do, then the only people who would be worshiping God would be Jews.
And Paul, thinking the Messiah has come, thinks that, well, both Jews and Gentiles together should be worshiping the God of Israel.
But the Gentiles come in as Gentiles, and the Jews come in as Jews, and they all come in via this Jesus thing.
They're supposed to stay Gentiles, like Paula Sandrichson.
And, you know, I've read her book, Paul the Pagan's Apostle, and there's other literature out there as well.

Paula talks about ex-pagan pagans, and that's a really nice way of summarizing it.
And when she talks about Paul and his own Pharisaic identity, this is his new book on the Pharisees that I just edited with Joseph Seavers, which came out in November.
She did the article on Paul, and she describes Paul now that he's a follower of Jesus, is simply a better Pharisee, not an ex-Pharisee.
So it's an add-on rather than a substitution.
