[00:01:51] And in my more recent discussions with those officers, the number one issue that they raised to me with concern, often unable to speak publicly for fear of the type of retribution that Lieutenant Colonel Lomeyer faced, they say that your stand down regarding extremism did not help our military. [00:02:10] It hurt the military. [00:02:12] And I want to share with you that perspective, that it caused service members to otherize one another. [00:02:19] It impaired group cohesion. [00:02:21] And interesting to me is that I've heard those sentiments most frequently from units that are majority, minority, that this was not particularly helpful. [00:02:33] So I wanted to give you the opportunity to maybe share with us more specificity regarding the definitions that seemed to be a challenge when Ms. Hartzler was asking questions. [00:02:43] How should the Department of Defense think about critical race theory? [00:02:48] Sure. [00:02:49] First of all, on the issue of critical race theory, et cetera, I'll obviously have to get much smarter on whatever the theory is. [00:02:58] But I do think it's important, actually, for those of us in uniform to be open-minded and be widely read. [00:03:06] And the United States Military Academy is a university. [00:03:09] And it is important that we train and we understand. [00:03:13] And I want to understand white rage. [00:03:15] And I'm white. [00:03:16] And I want to understand it. [00:03:18] So what is it that caused thousands of people to assault this building and try to overturn the Constitution of the United States of America? [00:03:26] What caused that? [00:03:27] I want to find that out. [00:03:28] I want to maintain an open mind here, and I do want to analyze it. [00:03:31] It's important that we understand that because our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and guardians, they come from the American people. [00:03:37] So it is important that the leaders now and in the future do understand it. [00:03:42] I've read Miles Seitong. [00:03:44] I've read Karl Marx. [00:03:46] I've read Lenin. [00:03:47] That doesn't make me a communist. [00:03:48] So what is wrong with understanding, having some situational understanding about the country for which we are here to defend? [00:03:56] And I personally find it offensive that we are accusing the United States military, our general officers, our commissioned non-commissioned officers of being, quote, woke or something else because we're studying some theories that are out there. [00:04:08] That was started at Harvard Law School years ago, and it proposed that there were laws in the United States, anti-bellum laws prior to the Civil War that led to a power differential with African Americans that were three-quarters of a human being when this country was formed. [00:04:22] And then the Civil War and Emancipation Proclamation to change it. [00:04:26] And we brought it up to the Civil Rights Act in 1964. [00:04:28] It took another hundred years to change that. [00:04:30] So look at, I do want to know. [00:04:32] And I respect your service, and you and I are both green berets, but I want to know. [00:04:36] And it matters to our military and the discipline and cohesion of this military. [00:04:39] And I thank you for the opportunity to make a comment on that. [00:05:58] They will not show you no evidence of where they applied critical race theory because it's just a theory. [00:06:05] It's not even something you can apply to everyday life, and they can actually show you where there's racism or systematic racism. [00:06:12] Yeah, they can't show it to you. [00:06:13] But let me say this: okay, so he makes this political. [00:06:16] He brings up, he wants to know why a bunch of people stormed the Capitol and tried to, what did he say? [00:06:23] Overthrow the Constitution and the government. [00:06:26] That's what a general said. [00:06:28] What weapons did these people have? [00:06:29] I didn't see any rifles.
