Glenn is away for the long weekend, but we have an interview for you that he recorded a few days ago with Sarah Wagenknecht, who is a politician in Germany and we believe one of the most interesting politicians anywhere in the world today.
She is a person that we have interviewed here on the show before, a little over a year ago.
We spoke to her in January 2023.
And since then, many things have happened in her political trajectory.
She has left the party of which she was a longtime member, Die Linke, or the left in English.
It is a party that has its origins in the communist movement in Germany and has been an important Staple in the German left for many, many decades, but citing that she believes that this party and the broader left in general has abandoned its traditional issues in favor of the priorities of a more elite, more academically minded middle class.
That focuses more on cultural symbolic demands, or as they would be known in the United States, the culture war issues, and have instead not given much attention to the traditional concerns of the left, namely the well-being and the security concerns of the German working class.
Sarah Falkenknecht is also particularly alarmed by the total absence of anti-war voices in Germany, both as it relates to the war in Ukraine and the Israeli war in Gaza.
She believes that the broader German left has been co-opted to support all these wars.
And this is something that they get quite into during the discussion.
These themes that Glenn and Mrs. Wagner discuss in this interview are not only interesting in and of themselves, but they're also very relevant to the discussions that are going on in the United States right now.
We believe there are many parallels between Germany and the U.S., and because of that, we think this is an interview that will be illuminating to a broader audience who is not only interested in Germany, but in what's going on in the world.
As a quick programming note, this interview was conducted with the help of a simultaneous translator.
So we provide subtitles to Mrs. Wagner answers, which were given, of course, in German.
However, this setup will not work if you're listening in podcast form, as you will not be able to see the subtitles.
So if that's your case, you will find a link in there both to the video with the subtitles and to the transcript.
We are exceptionally making this transcript freely available to everyone.
So if you'd rather read the whole interview than watch it with subtitles, you can do that by following the link in the description.
We hope that you find this interview as interesting as we did.
