[00:02:18]  It's good to be here.
[00:02:19]  It is.
[00:02:20]  It's great to have you here.
[00:02:21]  It's a little surreal because you are kind of like America's mom for at least some generations.
[00:02:29]  Yeah, I know.
[00:02:31]  It's very gratifying to still hear it from people.
[00:02:35]  I saw you with Tucker Carlson and you talked about that.
[00:02:41]  And it seemed that you were almost teary-eyed when you talked about how there are people that come up and how you still feel kind of responsible for people that watch the show.
[00:02:56]  Do I have the right take or not?
[00:02:58]  Well, for people who feel for me and for people who say that I meant something in their lives and to them, you know, that touches me deeply.
[00:03:06]  And you must hear that a lot.
[00:03:09]  I do hear it a lot and I have heard it for many years.
[00:03:12]  And I think that I'm kind of the mom of the broken.
[00:03:19]  And some are okay put together too.
[00:03:24]  But especially for people who said, in a moment of real doubt and weakness and depression that I came through.
[00:03:34]  You know, that's great.
[00:03:35]  How did you get, I mean, because you had a tough childhood in some ways.
[00:03:42]  Mm-hmm.
[00:03:43]  You know, you grew up around victims of the Holocaust, the survivors of the Holocaust.
[00:03:49]  So you kind of had that spooky kind of scary stuff always.
[00:03:54]  Yeah.
[00:03:54]  um and then i i thought we were still living that in that place when i grew up because you know it was so real And everybody, you know, it was just very present.
[00:04:06]  And I thought, oh, we're still there.
[00:04:09]  I thought we were still in the Warsaw ghetto.
[00:04:12]  How does that affect you today?
[00:04:14]  I mean, what's it like to be a Jew today?
[00:04:17]  Oh, it's real scary.
[00:04:18]  It's like, okay, here it comes.
[00:04:20]  You know, it's always like kept at bay, particularly in America, the hope of everyone, the world.
[00:04:28]  And, you know, because it's the melting pot.
[00:04:31]  We're the only place on earth where you are born with inalienable rights, the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
[00:04:39]  In no other document does that exist.
[00:04:42]  So that means something to people who fled here in fear of their lives, a new beginning and all that.
[00:04:49]  And, you know, just that melting pot of people who fled to freedom and liberty.
[00:05:01]  So it just means something.
[00:05:04]  And that we defeated that giant, or we thought we did.
[00:05:10]  But the real history is way deeper than that, as we know.
[00:05:14]  I remember the ADL calling me an anti-Semite.
[00:05:19]  Oh, they called you that too?
[00:05:21]  Oh, yeah.
[00:05:21]  They call me that.
[00:05:22]  Yeah.
[00:05:23]  They call everybody that.
[00:05:25]  Yeah.
[00:05:25]  They called me that the year I got the Defender of Israel award from Benjamin Ness Young.
[00:05:30]  Well, that's why.
[00:05:30]  Right.
[00:05:31]  But why they said that is I said, we are planting the same seeds.
[00:05:36]  It doesn't help once the crop is in.
[00:05:39]  You can't plant the seeds of this.
[00:05:42]  And that's what has happened.
[00:05:43]  And now we're seeing the harvest is ripe and it's not good all around the world.
[00:05:48]  It's not good.
[00:05:48]  No, it's not good.
[00:05:50]  But, you know, when you get in bed with the devil, he takes, you know, he wants his price.
[00:05:57]  Nothing's for free.
[00:05:58]  Would you have said that 20 years ago?
[00:06:02]  I was saying it my whole life.
[00:06:03]  Your whole life.
[00:06:04]  Understood.
[00:06:04]  And you really, you meant it, though, your whole life.
[00:06:07]  Yeah, when I was just a kid, I was like, you know, I knew that it was, that I was part of whatever it is that fights that.
[00:06:16]  And that was the core of my whole being, my whole soul, my whole life.
[00:06:21]  No to that.
[00:06:23]  No to hatred.
[00:06:25]  No to that kind of thinking where you are addicted to hate because that's what it is.
[00:06:32]  And that you think you are so perfect, that you are so arrogant that you think, oh, I do none of these bad things, but they do.
[00:06:44]  Just that mind virus.
[00:06:46]  And that I see, I've seen it my whole life.
[00:06:51]  And I'm very sensitive to it.
[00:06:53]  And I hate it.
[00:06:55]  I hate it because as I do, and you too, all of us who hold Torah to mean something, it says in there, you must hate evil.
[00:07:08]  It doesn't say tolerate it or, you know, look the other way or just say, oh, I need to understand evil.
[00:07:16]  It says hate it.
[00:07:17]  And I have always hated it.
[00:07:19]  And I hate it when it raises its ugly head.
[00:07:24]  And it is here, got a foot hold.
[00:07:26]  Any place where there's self-righteousness, that's where it starts working.
[00:07:33]  That's good fertilizer for it.
[00:07:35]  Yeah, it's really good.
[00:07:36]  And in America, we really like to be self-righteous for a lot of reasons, you know.
[00:07:43]  And they feed us with it, saying, oh, it's these people, that people, you know, that party, this party.
[00:07:51]  All of it is to deflect from you looking at you, isn't it?
[00:07:56]  Because all that war, Torah tells us too, all the war in the world comes from the war inside.
[00:08:04]  And if you can't solve the war in you, of course, you're going to project it everywhere and you're going to see evidence of it everywhere.
[00:08:11]  But if you are somebody who thinks arrogantly, that means you're very ignorant and you're on a path straight down.
[00:08:22]  Yeah.
[00:08:22]  I used to, I swore off certitude a few years back because I used to be certain that I was certain about a few things.
[00:08:31]  And now I'm only certain that I'm not certain about anything.
[00:08:34]  Oh, I love that you brought up certainty because that's really a core part of everything.
[00:08:40]  I know what you mean about being certain of your opinions.
[00:08:47]  Yes.
[00:08:47]  Yeah.
[00:08:48]  Everything is changing.
[00:08:50]  Yeah, everything has changed.
[00:08:52]  During Occupy Wall Street um, you and I wouldn't have been sitting at the same table, and yet i'm, i'm.
[00:09:00]  I have a different view of of that time period and some of the people involved uh now than I did back then, and you do as well.
[00:09:09]  It's weird how you can never predict.
[00:09:14]  Well, I don't know if we'd be on different sides.
[00:09:16]  You don't think so?
[00:09:17]  No, I went there the first day that it uh was put together, because I always go someplace to find out for myself.
[00:09:24]  I never accept what anyone else says.
[00:09:28]  I do it for myself.
[00:09:29]  So, were you for it at the time?
[00:09:31]  I wanted to go see what it was about okay, and uh, what I found is not what anybody else would say, because i'm always true to myself, because I i'm a.
[00:09:46]  You know, you hate to say things.
[00:09:48]  You sound self-righteous, but I mean, i'm deep into my beliefs and they're core to me.
[00:09:55]  And when we talked about certainty, that's the only place I have certainty, right in my beliefs.
[00:10:02]  So, in my connection with my god, you know my, my creator and and the Tora, you know uh, so I went there to see for myself, because I don't believe anything people do, they're all.
[00:10:15]  They say one thing and do another every minute.
[00:10:17]  So I don't believe anything they say.
[00:10:20]  I just witness, I I watch.
[00:10:24]  So I went there and I was seeing what they were doing and I was seeing for myself.
[00:10:28]  Plus, I have these eyes that God forced me to have and i'm like why, why am I seeing this when nobody else in the world sees it like this?
[00:10:39]  Why do I have to see this?
[00:10:41]  Like, why am I the one that goes and sees people doing these things and those people doing them things they don't think anyone can see them.
[00:10:50]  That's one thing that i've learned in my life.
[00:10:53]  They think they're invisible or something, but they are to some people, a lot of people, aren't they?
[00:10:59]  Yeah, because they think they've tricked us so fully that we are incapable of seeing through the guys.
[00:11:07]  But I got those eyes and you know, like I say, he forced, forced me to have these eyes.
[00:11:13]  I didn't ask for it, but just the way I lived and was born and brought up, I have them.
[00:11:20]  So I went to Occupy Wall Street and I saw the children of the guys in the building demonstrating against their fathers while they were probably on, you know, an expense account from their parents.
[00:11:42]  And I saw a lot of ungrateful little leftist bastards.
[00:11:45]  And that's what it is all about.
[00:11:47]  The privilege of that.
[00:11:49]  Yes.
[00:11:49]  To bite the hand that feeds you.
[00:11:51]  And I think that's what it still is.
[00:11:53]  And then they came to me.
[00:11:55]  And of course, you know, I will go into this is for a longer time.
[00:12:00]  But, you know, then they wanted to buy up all the debt of, it was always about student loans.
[00:12:05]  And that was part of my thing when I ran for president in 2012.
[00:12:09]  But anyway, they wanted to buy up debt on Wall Street, these Occupy Wall Street.
[00:12:17]  And I'll tell you how I, I like to break stuff down.
[00:12:22]  That's what comics do.
[00:12:23]  But I got a vengeance for it because I don't like BS.
[00:12:27]  I don't like to be lied to.
[00:12:29]  I don't like to be tricked or BS'd.
[00:12:32]  In fact, I get all of my thrills from busting it down.
[00:12:37]  I just get a thrill.
[00:12:39]  I know.
[00:12:40]  And so I said, so you're asking me to help you pay Wall Street.
[00:12:47]  That's what you're asking.
[00:12:49]  Me to help you raise money to pay your dad on Wall Street.
[00:12:55]  So, see, I'm always trying to get to the joke, which is the zing.
[00:12:58]  I like the zinger.
[00:13:00]  Badoom, you know.
[00:13:02]  And of course, then they were like, you're a factor or whatever.
[00:13:06]  Then they go to the name calling when they're caught.
[00:13:09]  But I love it.
[00:13:10]  I go here.
[00:13:11]  I just try and make God laugh.
[00:13:14]  You know, in my mind, he's the greatest comedian.
[00:13:16]  And I love how he's exposing everyone.
[00:13:19]  They're all humiliating themselves right in front of our eyes with their Kamala Harris.
[00:13:24]  We have not one American serviceman serving anywhere to cut to.
[00:13:28]  All of those guys going, what is she doing?
[00:13:30]  I mean, the exposure, the veil of BS has fallen away.
[00:13:35]  I think that is God because he's making himself more visible in this world because of mass media and all this stuff that they can't hide behind or lie no more.
[00:13:46]  No church, no state can prevent the people from access to truth and information.
[00:13:52]  This is like the age we're winning.
[00:13:54]  The age we're living in is so huge for truth.
[00:13:59]  And that's never happened.
[00:14:01]  It's a renaissance of truth.
[00:14:03]  So I just love being in that, you know.
[00:14:05]  So you think we're at the beginning of that?
[00:14:08]  Oh, no, I think we're in the eye.
[00:14:12]  Really?
[00:14:13]  Yeah.
[00:14:13]  We already weathered a whole bunch of stuff, and we're in the eye and coming out of the eye.
[00:14:19]  And I think.
[00:14:20]  I hope you're right on that.
[00:14:22]  No, I think I am.
[00:14:26]  I feel it.

[00:14:28]  I wonder if we have enough time.
[00:14:31]  Because I think it's a horse race to the finish line.

[00:14:35]  They're carrying the MAGA red cap onto Air Force One.
[00:14:43]  Biden saying to Kamala, who's trying to say she has nothing to do with the Biden administration right now, on day one, well, this is day 3,000, baby.

[00:14:55]  The mind trick she's trying to pull on all of us and then Biden on the view going, I really did nothing.
[00:15:02]  I turned it all over to Kamala, and she's more than capable.
[00:15:05]  I mean, it's hilarious.
[00:15:07]  It is.
[00:15:07]  You could not.
[00:15:08]  Exposure to the 10th degree if you have the eyes to see it.
[00:15:12]  You know, it's hilarious.
[00:15:13]  I have to tell you, I don't, I would hate to be a comedy writer today because we're watching the biggest parody.
[00:15:23]  You watch it and you're like, it's not just me, right?
[00:15:26]  This would be hysterical if it wasn't our country.
[00:15:29]  Yeah, it is hysterical.
[00:15:32]  And it's even more hysterical when you factor in people that anybody is buying it at all.
[00:15:38]  That's even more hilarious.
[00:15:40]  It's a Monty Python sketch.
[00:15:43]  Oh, definitely.
[00:15:45]  He's definitely the person to vote for.
[00:15:48]  She's definitely in charge and can handle.
[00:15:52]  And then yanking it all out the back door to give to Zelensky, it's hilarious.
[00:15:58]  But so many people don't understand what a joke it is and how hilariously sad it is.
[00:16:09]  But I think we're supposed to laugh it to scorn.
[00:16:13]  And that's what comedians were cheerleaders for Laughing Power Doesn't.
[00:16:16]  Were you concerned about the state of comedy?
[00:16:20]  I mean, because it's made a comeback.
[00:16:23]  Fierce.
[00:16:23]  Yeah, fierce.
[00:16:24]  Here in Texas.
[00:16:25]  Yeah.
[00:16:26]  But, I mean, for a while there, it was insane.
[00:16:31]  No one could crack a joke.
[00:16:33]  No one could say anything.
[00:16:35]  I've never seen that in America.
[00:16:37]  Had you ever seen that?
[00:16:38]  No, I never saw it.
[00:16:39]  When Obama signed the NDAA, I wrote on Twitter, well, that kills comedy.
[00:16:45]  And it did.
[00:16:46]  And everybody got scared.
[00:16:48]  And, you know, nobody said anything.
[00:16:50]  And so.
[00:16:52]  Who's the Lenny Bruce today?
[00:16:54]  There's a lot of them.
[00:16:56]  Couldn't have said that four years ago.
[00:16:59]  Everybody's stepping up because I talk to a lot of young comics and I say to them when they ask me, and a lot of them do ask me, you know, for my opinion.
[00:17:10]  And I go, we got to be braver than we've ever been.
[00:17:14]  That's what we have to do.
[00:17:16]  And they are.
[00:17:19]  Like, there's so many young comics that they are just kicking down the doors.
[00:17:22]  Well, everybody knows we have to.
[00:17:25]  I mean, anybody who's worth anything and knows what a gift it is to have the mind of a comic, that's a gift from God.

[00:17:31]  You know, you can't waste it.
[00:17:33]  You can't pander with it.
[00:17:34]  You've got to go full force.
[00:17:37]  You know, it's a muscle.
[00:17:38]  Did you want to be a comic your whole life?
[00:17:41]  Even when you were a kid?
[00:17:44]  Yeah.
[00:17:45]  And my family was real funny.
[00:17:46]  And the only way you could keep from my dad hitting you in the head is if you'd say it funny.
[00:17:53]  Like, you know, you couldn't say anything.
[00:17:56]  Make my dad mad.
[00:17:57]  He had a short temper.
[00:17:59]  And, but if it was funny, he'd laugh because he wanted to be a comic too.
[00:18:03]  My dad was really funny, but a mean kind of funny.
[00:18:07]  Yeah.
[00:18:08]  But and he always went too far.
[00:18:11]  And I'm like, oh my God, I'm my dad.
[00:18:13]  But I always go too far too.
[00:18:15]  And then I'm like, oh, thanks, dad.
[00:18:17]  But isn't that part of it?
[00:18:18]  I mean, a good comedian will go too far occasionally because even if it ruins my life.
[00:18:27]  That's what I hope.
[00:18:28]  Did it ruin your life?
[00:18:31]  It ruined my entire life for approximately 10 days.
[00:18:37]  Yeah, it was a horror.
[00:18:40]  And then the.
[00:18:44]  But you made enough money to not care.
[00:18:47]  Right?
[00:18:49]  Yeah, but, you know, the money, I thought, you know, I was glad to have money.
[00:18:53]  Hell yeah.
[00:18:54]  I grew up on the welfare cheese.
[00:18:56]  Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:18:58]  So, but the goodwill that I had built that they took that away too.
[00:19:06]  And I had a really the thing that hurt the most is I was always so proud of having a diverse audience.
[00:19:12]  So they shoved that, you know, knife right between me and my black fans, which was the worst thing they could have done to me.
[00:19:22]  And but, you know, I, like I told Tucker when he got axed, I, because I had a couple years on him, you know, because we both got fired number one.
[00:19:35]  Yeah.
[00:19:36]  Which isn't even capitalism.
[00:19:38]  I don't even know what the hell.
[00:19:40]  But anyway, I said, well, that's a state-run media.
[00:19:43]  Yeah, it's Prabda, right?
[00:19:46]  Yeah.
[00:19:47]  So, but I told Tucker, it's like when God took us out of Egypt, you know, he removed us from slavery, and we wandered around in the desert for a while trying to get our bearings.
[00:20:00]  Hopefully not 40 years like those guys did.
[00:20:02]  They didn't have GPS then, I say.
[00:20:06]  Or maybe they did.
[00:20:08]  But then all of a sudden, you start realizing you've been led to the promised land of free creative space.
[00:20:17]  It's really difficult.
[00:20:18]  It's wonderful.
[00:20:19]  It's wonderful.
[00:20:22]  When you're working in a space where you're not looking over your shoulder because a shoe is going to fall, you know, it is so great to be, and I've been lucky enough to be able to do that for a while.
[00:20:35]  We have diverse staff.
[00:20:37]  We don't all agree on everything.
[00:20:39]  Of course.
[00:20:39]  We're just like Americans.
[00:20:41]  Right.
[00:20:41]  You know what I mean?
[00:20:42]  Yes, I do.
[00:20:43]  And we all have a sense of humor.
[00:20:45]  We all used to make fun of each other, especially the comics.
[00:20:49]  And we still do.
[00:20:50]  You know, we tell black jokes to each other, you know, because there's black people in the room.
[00:20:56]  That's why they don't like race jokes because they never have black people in the room.
[00:21:02]  It's true.
[00:21:03]  And we tell, you know, Jewish and Catholic jokes because those people are in the room who are more friends.
[00:21:11]  And it's wonderful.
[00:21:16]  It takes all the difference away to laugh.
[00:21:19]  Yeah.
[00:21:19]  And when you, I know I don't ever make a joke about people that I don't like.
[00:21:27]  That's just knifing them in the back.
[00:21:28]  Yeah.
[00:21:29]  You know, people I love.
[00:21:30]  I mean, my family's probably a little like yours.
[00:21:33]  We're brutal on each other.
[00:21:34]  Oh, of course.
[00:21:35]  Of course.
[00:21:35]  Oh, it's so fun.
[00:21:37]  I know.
[00:21:37]  It's so fun.
[00:21:38]  We went on vacation about a year ago, and I think we were in day three.
[00:21:42]  And my daughter said something to me.
[00:21:43]  And I said, hold on just a second.
[00:21:45]  Do you realize I think it's been three days and I don't think any of us have said one sincere thing?
[00:21:55]  It's just all sarcasm.
[00:21:56]  It's fantastic.
[00:21:57]  We never say sincere things either.
[00:22:01]  Ours are all fat jokes because everybody's kind of overweight or has eating disorders or something because we're getting so cultural.
[00:22:09]  Right.
[00:22:10]  But it's all fat jokes.
[00:22:11]  They're all so mean, but like even the really, really fat ones, they tell the meanest fat jokes.
[00:22:19]  But it's just fun.
[00:22:21]  And it's just fun.
[00:22:23]  It's fun, especially when it's a family.
[00:22:26]  I was going into a gallery that was considering taking some of my art.
[00:22:31]  And we had never met.
[00:22:32]  Your art.
[00:22:33]  I didn't even know you did it, but I saw it.
[00:22:34]  It's fantastic.

[00:22:37]  So I'm sitting in this gallery and I said to my daughter before, I said, I dare you.

[00:22:45]  And she's like, don't tempt me, dad.
[00:22:46]  I'll do it.
[00:22:47]  And I'm like, you'll never do it.
[00:22:49]  She sat, we sat there and they were, they had just said, we'll take you on.
[00:22:53]  And they were talking to the family and they got to her.
[00:22:57]  And she said, and she said, little actress, she's Lucille Ball.
[00:23:00]  And she kind of wells up with her eyes and she said, they asked about, you know, how are things with your dad?
[00:23:06]  What's it like around the house with him as a painter and stuff?
[00:23:08]  And she wells up and she says, I swear to you, he doesn't beat me.
[00:23:15]  We all laughed.
[00:23:16]  They didn't, but we had a great time.
[00:23:18]  Yeah, great time.
[00:23:19]  That's good.
[00:23:20]  Yeah.
[00:23:22]  So you are, let's go back to 16 years old.
[00:23:27]  You're in a car accident.
[00:23:28]  Yeah.
[00:23:29]  You were hit by a car?
[00:23:30]  Yeah, I got run over.
[00:23:32]  And brain damage?
[00:23:34]  What happened?
[00:23:34]  Yeah, the hood ornament went in my head through my skull into my, you know, it went right in there in the brain.
[00:23:42]  And then my legs got hooked under the tire and she dragged me 30 feet, you know, impaled there by my brain and dragged me.
[00:23:54]  How did she not?
[00:23:56]  Well, the sun was in her eyes.
[00:23:57]  It was a crest of a hill at going, you know, early in the morning there.
[00:24:02]  And so I woke up in the hospital with a couple days later out of coma.
[00:24:11]  Wow.
[00:24:12]  Yeah.
[00:24:13]  How did that affect me?
[00:24:14]  With my head shaved.
[00:24:15]  How did that affect you?
[00:24:18]  Well, oh, gosh, in so many ways, you know.
[00:24:25]  My mother says, you woke up a whole other person.
[00:24:29]  You were so nice till you got hit by that car.
[00:24:33]  And oh, I was, you know, you know that I grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, and we had a lot of Mormon neighbors.
[00:24:43]  And so, you know, I was the only Jew in the neighborhood.
[00:24:47]  And I have to tell you, that's a double whammy.
[00:24:50]  I always say, I'm a Mormon, and that's like the Jew of Christianity.
[00:24:56]  We're kind of shoved off to the side.
[00:24:57]  You're a Jew in a Mormon community and pretending to be a Mormon?
[00:25:03]  Well, we didn't pretend.
[00:25:06]  My mom was very taken with the Mormon church.

[00:25:46]  But so, well, in Salt Lake, it was like just a whole other world, kind of.

[00:25:54]  But it made me me because everybody was really religious.
[00:25:57]  And we just talk about God all the time.
[00:26:00]  Like even when we played Barbie dolls, I'd be like, the Lord says, you know, it's so great.
[00:26:05]  It is different than any other place.

[00:26:08]  But it was just part of our play.
[00:26:10]  Yeah.
[00:26:12]  Because it's part of everything.
[00:26:13]  Yeah.

[00:26:14]  And so my mom, the first thing she does is call the rabbi to come over and pray for me.
[00:26:22]  And he says a prayer, nothing happens.
[00:26:25]  So then she calls the neighbors.
[00:26:27]  They're Mormons to come over and pray for me the next day.
[00:26:30]  So they come over and pray over me and it goes away.
[00:26:33]  So my mom says, you know how everything's a sign and the Mormon thing.
[00:26:38]  Well, Bell Palsy goes away.
[00:26:40]  Well, I didn't know that.
[00:26:42]  And neither did my mom.
[00:26:44]  So my mom's like, this is a sign from God.
[00:26:47]  And in my book, I say, why a health professional or a doctor is not consulted, you may ask.
[00:26:53]  But that's just Utah.
[00:26:55]  You never went to the doctor.
[00:26:56]  You just have someone pray.
[00:26:59]  And, you know, that's probably the best form of medicine they look at now.
[00:27:02]  That's the control group where, you know, you think you're getting the placebo.
[00:27:07]  You're getting the placebo works better than, you know, because it's real deep stuff.
[00:27:14]  And so my mom, she decides that that's the church for her, you know, although we never joined, but we did.
[00:27:24]  We went.
[00:27:25]  And me and my mom would travel all over Utah giving speeches for the Mormon church there on Sunday talking about me being healed, you know?

[00:27:34]  And I believed I was healed.
[00:27:36]  And my mom believed I was healed.
[00:27:38]  You might have been.
[00:27:39]  I mean, well, I was.
[00:27:40]  Yeah.
[00:27:42]  When I was 15, I was reading the, I say, because I was very paranoid and, you know, from my upbringing and, you know, having Holocaust survivors as our friends and growing up in an apartment house there.

[00:28:02]  But I read in a, so my hobby was reading medical journals and crime stuff, forensics.
[00:28:11]  And it's still that way.
[00:28:12]  But anyhow, and it goes in, Bell's palsy is largely a 48-hour to 72-hour thing.
[00:28:19]  I'm like, what?
[00:28:23]  And then I get hit by a car like about a month later.
[00:28:28]  When I come out of that coma, I'm pissed, you know, because nothing.
[00:28:35]  So first thing I do when I'm out of the coma, I'm like, okay, I want a cigarette, you know, so I started smoking cigarettes.
[00:28:44]  I, uh, you know, because I had traveled all of Utah as, you know, president of the Mormon thing, I, Mormon church groups, and always, you know, I spoke.
[00:28:58]  That's where I did my first stage time was in the Mormon church.
[00:29:02]  Wow.
[00:29:02]  And I'd, you know, throw in some jokes.
[00:29:05]  Yeah.
[00:29:05]  You know, and my mom played the piano and led choirs.
[00:29:08]  And I also led Mormon choirs.
[00:29:11]  I was this person.
[00:29:13]  Wow.
[00:29:14]  Children's music.
[00:29:16]  But, well, I come out of it and I'm like, I'm having a cigarette.
[00:29:21]  But I just become like a, I didn't, I was very, had an insulated life in that little community.
[00:29:27]  I never did anything bad till then.
[00:29:31]  Okay, cigarettes, smoking a marijuana cigarette.
[00:29:36]  I tried to drink beer, but it made me sick.
[00:29:41]  Coffee, anything, you know, because I was like, it's weird.
[00:29:44]  When you're in, it's kind of like Rome.
[00:29:47]  When you're in that bubble, it tends to make people choose hard each directions.
[00:29:54]  You have the edges.
[00:29:56]  So when you go bad, you're like, I want all of it.
[00:30:00]  Well, I realized later, and plus I would be submerged into these horrible nightmares that were just horrible.
[00:30:07]  And later I find out, well, that's from a chronic head injury.
[00:30:12]  I had all that going on, you know.
[00:30:14]  And then I would put myself in these terrible positions.
[00:30:18]  And like my mom says, maybe I wasn't really the old Roseanne, I was the other Roseanne.
[00:30:24]  And then I started hitchhiking across the country by myself.
[00:30:28]  Oh, my gosh.
[00:30:29]  And wasn't Ted Bundy?
[00:30:31]  Ted Bundy was from Utah, wasn't he?
[00:30:34]  Well, no, he was from, I think he's from Washington, but he came to Utah.
[00:30:38]  Yeah, okay.
[00:30:39]  He came down there.
[00:30:40]  And so you thought hitchhiking was a good idea.
[00:30:43]  I don't believe the stuff I did.
[00:30:45]  Lived in a cave, lived in parked cars, crazy stuff, was homeless, did crazy.
[00:30:52]  And I wanted to be a hippie so bad.
[00:30:54]  I didn't even know what it was.
[00:30:56]  But, you know, everybody was doing it at Haight Ashbery.
[00:30:59]  And I wanted to do that.
[00:31:00]  So I got these sheets from Sears and made these long dresses.
[00:31:04]  And then I got a guitar, which I didn't know how to play, but I carried it around and stuff.
[00:31:11]  And then I go sit on the corner and I made all these love beads and I put about 50 love beads on my neck and I sewed them on so they can never come off because I did everything wrong.
[00:31:22]  But I'd sit at the corner with this guitar going, how many, I couldn't even play it.
[00:31:28]  How many roses?
[00:31:30]  I just portrayed.
[00:31:33]  I had to portray this.
[00:31:37]  I don't know.

[00:31:42]  You know, and then I was shipped off to the mental institution shortly thereafter.

[00:32:35]  Well, I thought when we go out for our things, we're going to, when we go out to see the computer war tennis shoes for the 19th time, that was our only outing in the state hospital there.

[00:32:49]  Which I did on the view many years later, sitting there with her.
[00:32:53]  And I said, Marie, when I was a kid, I looked up to you so much.
[00:32:57]  And I thought, I'm going to be the second star that comes out of Utah, like Marie Osmond.
[00:33:02]  She goes, I never grew up in that backward state.
[00:33:06]  And it blew my mind.
[00:33:07]  And she goes, I was raised on the beaches of California.
