Flagrant - Andrew Schulz & Akaash Singh - Ramy on Mia Khalifa, Smashing Cousins & Aliens Building the Pyramids Aired: 2022-10-06 Duration: 56:06 === Rami's New Animated Show (15:01) === [00:00:00] What's up everybody? [00:00:00] Welcome to Flagrant and today we have honestly the creator of my favorite new show. [00:00:06] Really? [00:00:07] We got Rami in the bed. [00:00:09] Oh my God. [00:00:11] Now I'm going to be completely honest. [00:00:12] I've watched the first episode today. [00:00:14] Yes. [00:00:15] But I'm not, I can't believe you didn't tell me about this show, dude. [00:00:19] He's too humble, this guy. [00:00:20] He really is. [00:00:21] Yeah. [00:00:21] I'm literally watching it today. [00:00:23] I'm on my phone. [00:00:24] I'm watching it. [00:00:25] And I start the first huge, I'm going back to season one, obviously, but there's a laugh. [00:00:31] You have a couple things in it that I've seen from your stand-up, which is adapted very well. [00:00:35] Because a lot of times when people put their stand-up into shows, it feels like stand-up. [00:00:40] But like, you're generous with the laughs. [00:00:41] Like, sometimes you're giving your punchlines to, yeah. [00:00:45] Yeah, always. [00:00:46] It's really putting other people. [00:00:47] Oh, man. [00:00:48] But there's a huge laugh from your mom on the show. [00:00:51] Yeah. [00:00:51] When you're saying, okay, it's time. [00:00:54] I want to date. [00:00:55] You know what I mean? [00:00:56] And she goes, uncovered or covered. [00:01:01] Dude, I'm like cackling in the fucking office. [00:01:03] It's this amazing fucking show. [00:01:05] I'm so fucking proud of you. [00:01:06] I know how talented you are. [00:01:07] So it's exciting to have you here. [00:01:09] But I didn't know how talented you are. [00:01:11] Yeah. [00:01:12] You know why? [00:01:12] Because you're so fucking nice. [00:01:15] I don't often see people that are this friendly, authentically friendly, and this brilliant. [00:01:20] Well, I don't like to talk about it a lot. [00:01:22] That's why Schultz hasn't known about it. [00:01:24] He's called it a new show. [00:01:24] It's a four years. [00:01:26] This is my favorite news. [00:01:27] That is, they get on me. [00:01:28] They're like, why aren't you promoing hard? [00:01:29] And I'm like, ah, people are busy. [00:01:31] Like, I'm like, we're busy. [00:01:33] We are busy. [00:01:34] I'm not trying to stress anybody out with having to watch my show. [00:01:37] I appreciate it. [00:01:38] But I would really suggest that you guys go watch it. [00:01:40] It is fantastic, dude. [00:01:42] Thanks, man. [00:01:42] It's really fucking good. [00:01:43] What's going on, man? [00:01:44] Good to see you, man. [00:01:45] Dude, Golden Doodle, how is it? [00:01:49] I have this dog. [00:01:50] He's a doodle mix or something. [00:01:53] But the thing is... [00:01:53] We now have money. [00:01:54] But no, but this is the problem. [00:01:56] No, this is the problem. [00:01:57] We didn't know he was. [00:01:59] He's a rescue from Mexico. [00:02:01] Stop it. [00:02:01] I swear to God. [00:02:03] Nobody took us out of Golden Doodle. [00:02:04] No, but this is the thing. [00:02:05] He's a terrier doodle. [00:02:06] I don't know what it is, but when we got him, he looked like a rat. [00:02:09] And then now everyone thinks I paid six grand for him, but he's not a six grand dog. [00:02:13] Tommy, I bumped into you and your wife on the street with my golden doodle. [00:02:16] And you were like, we want a golden doodle. [00:02:18] I did. [00:02:19] And he went to Mexico and snuck one in. [00:02:22] Well, I wanted one with a story. [00:02:24] You gotta be. [00:02:26] Because there was a while where I was like, I like that they don't shed because Muslims don't want dog hair everywhere. [00:02:31] That is, you know what I mean? [00:02:32] Like, we're good with dogs. [00:02:34] They don't want hair or anything. [00:02:34] We're good with the... [00:02:36] Cover it up! [00:02:37] Cover it up! [00:02:38] No, we're uncovered. [00:02:42] But if you want to cover, cover. [00:02:44] You know what I mean? [00:02:44] I think everyone should be able to do whatever they want. [00:02:46] Love it. [00:02:47] A lot of that's going on in Iran. [00:02:48] Schultz will find out about Iran in like two, three years. [00:02:51] Two years, Schultz will be like, flagrant people. [00:02:54] There's something happening in Iran. [00:02:56] And everyone's like, you know, that happened in 22. [00:02:58] You know, it was crazy. [00:02:59] Like on Flagrant 2025. [00:03:03] Schultz is just like, when it comes to the Middle East, huge lag. [00:03:06] You know, just on another site. [00:03:08] The other day, you guys are looking at all these people. [00:03:09] So it's... [00:03:10] Seriously, no, but there are these lights. [00:03:12] And like, it was like mid-September. [00:03:13] There was these like lights shooting straight into the sky from downtown Manhattan. [00:03:16] Yeah, it was the premiere of season three. [00:03:18] Was that? [00:03:18] Yeah, exactly. [00:03:19] Did you guys have like a banana or something like that? [00:03:21] Like, that must have been expensive. [00:03:24] Dude, it was wild, bro. [00:03:26] And everybody goes, never forget. [00:03:27] I'm like, what happened? [00:03:29] How can I forget? [00:03:30] I just started watching. [00:03:33] But that was really cool. [00:03:34] The budgets are going to the right places. [00:03:35] I was wondering how long I'd be on the podcast before. [00:03:38] I was like, I was like, I know we're going to get there. [00:03:42] It's been two minutes. [00:03:44] I mean, this is amazing. [00:03:44] When I texted you, you accepted so fast. [00:03:46] I was like, does he know what podcast we are? [00:03:50] He watched episode one yesterday. [00:03:51] I watched episode one of Flagrant. [00:03:53] And wow. [00:03:54] But I'm learning about Iran, too. [00:03:56] Yeah, you are learning about Iran. [00:03:58] I'm learning about Iran. [00:03:59] I'm learning about a lot of curse words. [00:04:01] You could tell, too, he did a thing with the chair. [00:04:03] I'm like, here we go. [00:04:07] I'm like, oh, God. [00:04:09] Oh, God. [00:04:09] I'm learning about a radio. [00:04:10] I would just like to say, I have never watched an episode of the podcast. [00:04:14] Not one. [00:04:15] I don't know. [00:04:16] Not one before you came on. [00:04:17] I don't know who's been here. [00:04:19] I don't know what's going on. [00:04:20] I met the man on the street. [00:04:22] He had his golden doodle. [00:04:23] I thought this was a podcast about golden doodles. [00:04:26] And so just, I just want to preface that. [00:04:28] Continue. [00:04:28] I'm a huge fan of talking about Iran. [00:04:31] I'm a huge fan of Egypt. [00:04:32] Yeah. [00:04:33] Which is around there. [00:04:38] This is where the map comes up and it's like, world according to Schultz. [00:04:42] It's like America. [00:04:43] And then everything else is just like this. [00:04:45] They're probably close together. [00:04:46] Culturally, though. [00:04:49] I've been to Egypt. [00:04:50] You've been. [00:04:50] Yeah. [00:04:50] I did. [00:04:51] I'm really talking about it. [00:04:52] We bumped into each other. [00:04:53] I think afterwards, I told you. [00:04:54] I was like, I went. [00:04:55] Yeah. [00:04:56] Fire. [00:04:56] Pyramids were fire. [00:04:57] Good time. [00:04:57] Cairo could use a little sprucin. [00:04:59] A little organized. [00:05:02] You can't eat the salad, which a lot of people don't know. [00:05:06] Or the koshery. [00:05:08] No, the koshery you have to eat. [00:05:09] Yeah, but you're amazing. [00:05:10] You don't have, I mean, dude. [00:05:12] What does kosher mean? [00:05:12] Koshery is the best. [00:05:14] It's carbs. [00:05:15] It's like, how do you feed millions of people with no money? [00:05:18] And it's everything. [00:05:19] It's pasta. [00:05:20] It's rice. [00:05:20] It's lentils. [00:05:21] It's hot sauce, beans, everything all in one. [00:05:23] It's unbelievable. [00:05:24] Yeah, you can't eat anything that's not, that hasn't had like heat applied to it. [00:05:27] Like I ate a salad. [00:05:28] I was just there. [00:05:29] You don't have to refer this to me. [00:05:30] I know, you know. [00:05:32] It needs heat, dude. [00:05:33] I messed up. [00:05:34] I ate a salad. [00:05:35] I went. [00:05:35] Don't you know? [00:05:36] And he's trying to do some American thing. [00:05:37] Yeah, yeah, yeah. [00:05:38] Laid out in the hotel. [00:05:39] Destroyed. [00:05:39] Laid out in the hotel for four seasons? [00:05:41] The four seasons. [00:05:41] Come on. [00:05:42] Laid out Cairo. [00:05:44] We went to people. [00:05:45] Laid out in the four seasons. [00:05:46] That's how we do Cairo. [00:05:47] Yeah, yeah, yeah. [00:05:48] Four seasons. [00:05:48] You filmed there season one and three, right? [00:05:50] Season one and three. [00:05:51] I mean, and he did Israel, Duff. [00:05:53] He filmed in Israel season three. [00:05:55] That's what's up. [00:05:56] I'm out in Jerusalem. [00:05:57] The biggest flex, really. [00:05:58] Jerusalem. [00:05:59] He's taking advantage. [00:06:00] Jerusalem is, I believe, in Palestine. [00:06:02] It's not in. [00:06:03] Well, that's what we try to tell Duff. [00:06:05] It's about time for me to go for my fast right now. [00:06:09] I get politics according to Schultz. [00:06:11] It's like remember, the biggest discussion of the Middle East. [00:06:15] He goes, but Palestine, right? [00:06:16] I'm late. [00:06:17] Mike get all my information from like 1946. [00:06:22] So I think it was Palestine. [00:06:25] Tyranny. [00:06:25] Sorry. [00:06:26] Tyranny. [00:06:28] The show falls off after episode one. [00:06:31] No, no, there's cousin fucking. [00:06:34] That's true. [00:06:35] Which I saw, and I don't want to give this, I don't know if you put this in that because I saw you work the bit out. [00:06:41] You saw me, you saw me immediately. [00:06:43] I'm like, this is fucking amazing. [00:06:45] It's such a good bit. [00:06:46] Amazing. [00:06:47] I was very happy. [00:06:48] You came like one of the first times I was running my full hour. [00:06:51] Yeah, and you saw the cousin bit. [00:06:53] Yeah, yeah. [00:06:53] And you were like, dude. [00:06:55] And I was like, all right, thank you. [00:06:56] I appreciate that. [00:06:58] Yeah, it's funny because. [00:06:58] He's a pro cousin. [00:06:59] How much of that is true? [00:07:01] I have not. [00:07:02] You sure? [00:07:03] Yeah. [00:07:03] But he makes a strong case for it. [00:07:06] I think he wanted to, probably. [00:07:09] We live through our jokes. [00:07:11] No, no. [00:07:11] I'll choose your cousin, yeah? [00:07:15] You are hot cousins, bro. [00:07:16] You can't talk. [00:07:16] You know, we got big families, but you can have one. [00:07:22] People will come up to me and they'll be like, you know, ever since your show came out, people come up to me and say, do you have sex with your cousin? [00:07:30] Like, you're making us all look like we have sex with our cousins. [00:07:33] I'm like, that is better than terrorism, though. [00:07:37] Like, we were, it's a notch up. [00:07:40] Like, I don't. [00:07:41] Do you realize? [00:07:42] Okay, there was bin Laden and now the cousin thing. [00:07:45] I mean, I feel like, cool, make a new show and take it to another place. [00:07:48] And if it wasn't something as strong as cousins, it wouldn't make us forget about terrorism. [00:07:52] You know what I mean? [00:07:54] Like, if you're like, we're God. [00:07:54] That's what it is. [00:07:55] Okay, terrorists. [00:07:56] They wouldn't believe that. [00:07:57] But you went from like terrorists to like royals. [00:08:00] Right. [00:08:00] That's like terrorists. [00:08:01] Basically, we're what the royal family, dude. [00:08:05] We're basically royalty. [00:08:06] And Egyptians love British royalty. [00:08:08] There you go. [00:08:08] Princess Diana, like everywhere. [00:08:10] Cleopatra. [00:08:11] Mugs. [00:08:12] We have Princess Diana Muggs at my house. [00:08:14] So this is a royal move to do this with the Khalifa. [00:08:19] How do you feel about the queen's death? [00:08:20] Because she killed Princess Diana. [00:08:22] Yeah, I don't, like, I mean, my mom was upset. about the queen's death, which was shocking to me. [00:08:28] I was there when you found out. [00:08:30] I'm doing another project that Rami's on. [00:08:32] Yes. [00:08:32] And then he gives me a big hug, and then in that moment, somebody's like, Rami, the queen died. [00:08:35] He just goes, good. [00:08:36] And then he doesn't even look at the TV and just keeps me. [00:08:40] I kept moving. [00:08:40] We had a busy day. [00:08:41] Yeah, we were doing this animated show. [00:08:44] And we were just like, let's keep moving. [00:08:45] We got to, you know, the queen can't power another brown project. [00:08:52] We've got, if we stop this day right now because of this queen, colonialism can do. [00:08:58] It's like, okay, I'm going to recolonize today and stop my shoot for the queen. [00:09:03] No, we go onwards. [00:09:05] I did bring up really quickly Cleopatra, and I know that that's a sensitive subject for Egyptians. [00:09:11] Okay. [00:09:12] Is she white? [00:09:13] Because you would tell me that a lot behind closed doors. [00:09:16] You'd be like, she's so white. [00:09:17] Like, you said this. [00:09:18] No, but remember, you'd be like, she's so white. [00:09:22] Exactly. [00:09:22] Middle school. [00:09:23] Yeah, yeah, yeah. [00:09:24] We went to middle school together, right? [00:09:25] And you would tease me for not speaking Arab. [00:09:28] The DNA of Egyptians, we're the most diverse people. [00:09:30] I mean, my uncle, direct uncle, looks like Alex. [00:09:35] Straight up. [00:09:36] Straight up. [00:09:36] You're not Puerto Rican. [00:09:37] Facts. [00:09:39] Puerto Rican looks like a diet. [00:09:40] Straight up. [00:09:41] A lot of people think I'm Puerto Rican. [00:09:42] Yeah, yeah, yeah. [00:09:43] But we're all over in the palette, man. [00:09:45] So we're very diverse. [00:09:47] Right off the bottom. [00:09:47] There's a lot of colorism, though. [00:09:48] Like, you're like... [00:09:49] Straight up. [00:09:50] Yes, absolutely. [00:09:51] It's a huge problem. [00:09:51] There's colorism everywhere. [00:09:53] It's a huge problem for your uncle. [00:09:54] Yes. [00:09:55] For you, it's not that bad. [00:09:57] Yeah, I mean, it's, yeah, no, it gets bad for sure. [00:10:01] Yeah, that's everywhere. [00:10:02] Did you make that choice when you chose your wife in the show? [00:10:05] Because there's actually, this is weirdly something I think you brought up. [00:10:08] Normally you'll see minorities who are married, the man is darker and the woman is lighter. [00:10:13] And your show, I can think of two married couples off rip where the woman is darker and the man is lighter. [00:10:18] Dave Merhedge's wife on the show. [00:10:20] Yes. [00:10:20] Shout out to Dave, man. [00:10:21] Dave and Moe. [00:10:21] Shout out to Dave and Moe. [00:10:22] You work with great. [00:10:23] Love, Dave. [00:10:23] Love Moe. [00:10:24] Yeah, they're the best. [00:10:25] No, we, well, we, going into the second season, which Shelton get to in a couple of years, but it we... [00:10:31] The episodes are 20 minutes, bro. [00:10:34] How am I going to get through this? [00:10:35] You know what I'm saying? [00:10:36] He's been weeping over the queen dying. [00:10:40] No, no, you're in Diana. [00:10:41] He just found out about Diana. [00:10:41] Yeah, Diana, dude. [00:10:42] That was crazy. [00:10:44] Most of the Muslims in America are black, and so we wanted to put black Muslims on the show. [00:10:47] We got Mahershal Ali in the second season. [00:10:49] She's great. [00:10:50] Yeah, and so, and my character, yeah, marries his daughter, who, yeah, so we were excited to explore those storylines. [00:10:56] I realize how famous you are based on who comes on your show on who Maharsha Ali, Bella Hadid, Mia Khalifa. [00:11:02] And I'm like, this motherfucker's crazy famous. [00:11:05] Well, damn. [00:11:06] Mia Khalifa. [00:11:07] She's well-known. [00:11:08] Yeah. [00:11:09] Hey, can I ask you a question about Mia Khalifa? [00:11:11] Oh, no. [00:11:13] By the way, I went to Egypt. [00:11:14] Your biggest fear? [00:11:15] I went to Egypt. [00:11:16] I haven't seen my aunt in three years. [00:11:18] And the first thing she says to me is, Mia Khalifa, huh? [00:11:21] This is my aunt in Cairo. [00:11:23] Is she like disappointed or intrigued? [00:11:25] Curious. [00:11:28] I get the disappointment. [00:11:29] Yeah. [00:11:30] Because she's Catholic. [00:11:31] So that's not her shit to wear in the porn. [00:11:34] What? [00:11:34] You didn't know this? [00:11:36] No, are you doing an Andrew thing? [00:11:37] Yeah. [00:11:38] I'm right. [00:11:38] Tell him I'm right. [00:11:40] You don't have to. [00:11:41] I don't think I would ever say you were right, but I would say I'm not. [00:11:45] That would be a crazy position to take. [00:11:48] But I get what you're saying. [00:11:50] I understand the backlash, right? [00:11:52] Right, right, right. [00:11:53] I think with the Western version of it is like, oh, this woman's name is Mia Khalifa, so she must be Muslim. [00:11:59] Right? [00:11:59] Yeah. [00:12:00] Because a lot of times we don't realize that there are Catholic Muslims, right? [00:12:03] Catholic Muslims. [00:12:04] I said it and keep it in. [00:12:06] I said it. [00:12:07] Double dip it in. [00:12:07] Double done. [00:12:08] Catholic Middle Eastern folks. [00:12:09] Okay. [00:12:11] And so she's wearing the hijab and the porn. [00:12:15] And I get it. [00:12:15] If you're a Muslim, you're like, yo, this isn't even your shit. [00:12:18] Like, if you were Muslim and devout and you want to porn it up, okay. [00:12:23] But you're putting on a you know Muslim face. [00:12:27] It is a Muslim face. [00:12:28] It is. [00:12:30] She's wearing slim face. [00:12:31] I'm just thinking about Catholic Muslims, like just like a Christmas without food. [00:12:38] It's like, is this Christmas or Ramadan? [00:12:40] Like, what are we doing? [00:12:41] What are we doing? [00:12:43] It's tough, bro. [00:12:44] We need more Catholic Muslims. [00:12:46] That's a great way of getting around answering that question. [00:12:50] That's the sketch. [00:12:53] Nikhalifa, she came on our show. [00:12:55] Really, just a very sweet person. [00:12:57] Now, when you were praying, because I know you guys will pray during filming, did she know what to do? [00:13:02] We did. [00:13:03] No, that was separate. [00:13:05] Or was she like me where it's like, okay, you guys do your thing. [00:13:07] I'll see you in about 15 minutes. [00:13:09] Did you pray with them? [00:13:10] No, I wasn't even invited. [00:13:11] You don't involve. [00:13:13] You know, he prays before we eat. [00:13:15] He was doing that. [00:13:16] He was. [00:13:16] All this time, you're not Muslim? [00:13:21] Everything unveiled on this episode. [00:13:24] Half of the flagry cats thought they were Muslim. [00:13:27] Turns out none of them are. [00:13:29] Somehow, Schultz knows the moose. [00:13:32] Schultz is a Muslim Christian. [00:13:35] For real, I am. [00:13:36] I am a Muslim Christian. [00:13:37] He's a Muslim Christian atheist. [00:13:39] Yeah. [00:13:40] What were you doing in Egypt again? [00:13:41] Seeing the pyramids. [00:13:42] You just went to see them, huh? [00:13:43] They're dope. [00:13:44] Unbelievable. [00:13:44] It's amazing. [00:13:46] It lives up to the hype. [00:13:47] Blew my mind. [00:13:48] Yeah, yeah, without a fucking mind. [00:13:51] Yeah, I mean, it was to this day the most amazing thing I've ever seen with my eyes. [00:13:56] Yeah, I talk about them all the time. [00:13:58] People be like, dude, you're Egyptian. [00:13:59] Like, you stereotype. [00:14:00] You sit and talk about the pyramids. [00:14:01] Yeah, they're so dope. [00:14:03] Like, they're worth talking about for another thousand years. [00:14:06] Now, now, now. [00:14:07] Do you think it was the Sudanese that made them? [00:14:11] There's a lot of theories. [00:14:13] There's a lot of theories. [00:14:14] Which one do you believe? [00:14:17] I like the alien stuff personally, just because when they get into the precision of how every brick is, it's like it was made in a machine. [00:14:26] It's like machines like we haven't even seen. [00:14:28] And so that I think. [00:14:29] You get cried from that because you're like, yo, they think aliens built those and it was us. [00:14:32] Is that what you're saying? [00:14:33] I don't. [00:14:33] No, I don't. [00:14:34] I kind of like the alien theory. [00:14:36] I think even if we were working with aliens, that would be profound. [00:14:39] And they would choose the Egyptians. [00:14:40] That's what I'm saying. [00:14:41] Yeah. [00:14:41] Because it's a win-win. [00:14:42] Exactly. [00:14:43] You know what I mean? [00:14:43] Like, so if we did the Murphy into them, it's a win-win. [00:14:46] And I say that because you guys can work with Israel. [00:14:50] You can work with like other countries. [00:14:52] Like, everybody wants to work with you. [00:14:54] You're not going to go to Saudi if you're an alien. [00:14:56] Do you know what I mean? [00:14:57] Like, no, these guys are really strict. [00:14:58] You know what I mean? [00:14:59] They're not willing to negotiate. === Aliens and Egyptian Win-Wins (03:48) === [00:15:01] Well, Egyptians, we're down to make a deal no matter what. [00:15:04] As soon as an alien comes, it doesn't really matter. [00:15:06] Like, we'll hang out with aliens. [00:15:08] Like, Egyptian could convince an alien, I'll fix that UFO. [00:15:11] Like, whatever. [00:15:13] Like, an Egyptian would tell me, I got a UFO guy. [00:15:15] Like, don't even worry about taking it in the back. [00:15:17] We'll make it happen. [00:15:18] UFO, my FO. [00:15:21] That's what it means to be Egyptian. [00:15:23] Like, we're down. [00:15:24] Like, we're, I don't care if I haven't seen it. [00:15:26] I'll figure it out. [00:15:27] The real chosen people, man. [00:15:28] I'll figure it out. [00:15:30] We do. [00:15:31] You had a good time, though. [00:15:32] People don't understand how tourist-friendly it is. [00:15:34] Yeah. [00:15:34] It's like it's really, they love someone not from there. [00:15:37] They'll show you around. [00:15:38] You'll have an amazing thing. [00:15:39] That was the other thing that happened is that everybody that I've ever met, and maybe this is, I don't know. [00:15:46] But yeah, everybody I ever met is like, here's the key to my home. [00:15:50] Yeah. [00:15:50] Like every American Egyptian is like, you just stay in my home when you're there. [00:15:55] I've given so many keys out. [00:15:56] Yeah. [00:15:56] Yeah. [00:15:57] Is it real? [00:15:57] Do you just go there and there's there's no home? [00:16:00] What do you mean? [00:16:00] Like no. [00:16:01] Even my boxing coach, he's Egyptian, right? [00:16:03] He's like an Egyptian like champion. [00:16:05] And he's always just, yeah, just stay with me and like my family. [00:16:08] Yeah. [00:16:09] And I'm like, you're divorced. [00:16:10] He's like, it's okay. [00:16:11] Like, he just gives you an address. [00:16:15] He's not there. [00:16:16] Yep. [00:16:17] Yeah. [00:16:17] And then she's like fighting with him through you. [00:16:20] Yeah. [00:16:20] She's like, you're like trying to go to bed. [00:16:23] I think you owe me some money. [00:16:25] You're his proxy. [00:16:26] That's tough. [00:16:27] Oh, yeah, yeah. [00:16:27] You're there. [00:16:28] He calls you at 2 a.m. [00:16:28] He's like, all right, there's a drawer. [00:16:31] There's some stuff in there that I need. [00:16:33] And you're like, dude, I'm a mole. [00:16:36] That's probably what would happen. [00:16:38] Yeah, yeah, yeah. [00:18:39] When you go to Egypt, do they treat you like an American? [00:18:41] Are they really happy to see you? [00:18:42] Or are they like, because when I go to India, I grow up my whole life here thinking I'm Indian. [00:18:46] Then I go to India. [00:18:47] They're like, this American motherfucker. [00:18:48] Get out of here. [00:18:49] You sell out? === Freshly Discount Offer (16:12) === [00:18:50] Yeah. [00:18:50] There's a little bit of that. [00:18:50] Do you get that in Egypt? [00:18:52] They just know. [00:18:53] I mean, I think I can hang for like 20 minutes where you're not sure. [00:18:57] But then. [00:18:58] Do you speak that well? [00:18:59] Yeah, yeah. [00:19:00] I mean, I can go and not speak English, but they'll know that it's not, that Arabic's not my first language. [00:19:05] Yeah, yeah. [00:19:05] Yeah. [00:19:05] But then since the show's come out, a lot of people will be like, oh, I've seen the show. [00:19:08] Yeah. [00:19:08] Which is cool. [00:19:09] Are you crazy famous over there? [00:19:11] No. [00:19:11] I mean, I wouldn't say crazy because it's not like on there. [00:19:13] It's not on Netflix. [00:19:14] You know, Netflix is, you know, like I, I, I made, no, Netflix is huge. [00:19:20] Huge. [00:19:20] I mean, maybe in America, but no, in the Middle East, it's like, it's huge. [00:19:25] And, you know, like I made Mo with Mo, right? [00:19:28] Yeah. [00:19:29] And which, which is really, you know, really funny. [00:19:31] Which is on Netflix.check. [00:19:33] Go check out Mo's show. [00:19:35] Which is on Netflix. [00:19:36] It's also fantastic. [00:19:36] And Robinson. [00:19:38] Unbelievable. [00:19:38] We had a lot of fun. [00:19:39] Yeah, but basically put your homies on like that. [00:19:41] It is. [00:19:42] No. [00:19:42] You do have to, but not a lot of people have to do that. [00:19:44] We gotta you are the model minority in entertainment in that we all say, like, oh, if we get on, we put our, we put people from our culture on, et cetera. [00:19:52] And not a lot of people do that. [00:19:54] You do that for all of your homies, and it's so beautiful to watch. [00:19:58] Even Dave Merhedge gets his own episode this season. [00:20:00] Yeah. [00:20:01] Like, you're gonna be surprised and impressed, I think, how little he's in his show season three. [00:20:06] Not that he's not in it, but most of us are so like needy and want to be the centerpiece of everything. [00:20:11] He puts, he has given everyone their own episode, basically. [00:20:14] You think you'll still be in the business by the time I get to season three? [00:20:18] You know, if there's a chance that I could retire, I'd be down. [00:20:20] No, I love doing this. [00:20:22] And it's the kind of thing where, like, you know, because we're working on something together as well. [00:20:26] And it's like, I feel like in 10 years for all of us, like all of us being able to branch out and be working on each other's stuff and doing this kind of thing. [00:20:34] So the more it could be a part of it, it's the best. [00:20:36] Because the idea that like, you know, so much of, and I think that the industry used to do this with stand-ups a lot. [00:20:41] I love the way you break the mold with stand-up because there's just this idea of, oh, there's just the chosen few who can only be on the chosen networks, who can only do this, who can only do that. [00:20:51] And I think, you know, whether it be trying to be divided, even just within stand-ups or even trying to be divided by, okay, well, this is the black comic, this is the Asian comic, this is whatever. [00:20:59] It's anything we can do to be like, no, like, yeah, I put up my boy and his show is so much different. [00:21:04] And we worked on each other's stuff. [00:21:05] And it doesn't, yeah, there's similarities, but it's way more different than it is the same. [00:21:09] And to be able to keep doing that with a bunch of people, for me, and like, I'm excited about 10 years from now when you see the people who started even on our show on certain like circuits, you're doing this on certain circuits, you're going to be like, whoa, everybody's doing what everyone's doing. [00:21:26] My Christian homie, Muslim Christian, maybe, who knows? [00:21:28] But he always says, you know a tree by the fruit that it bears. [00:21:32] And then when I look at you and I see Amo gets his own show and then everybody gets their own episode on the show. [00:21:36] And then May, who plays your sister, May's on Marvel. [00:21:39] Doing Marvel. [00:21:39] Jason plays my uncle. [00:21:40] He's on Marvel. [00:21:41] And you do a show, you throw me a role. [00:21:44] You got an animated series. [00:21:45] You're putting all your homies on. [00:21:46] And it's like, oh, this guy, this is the fucking guy. [00:21:48] I really believe that you are. [00:21:49] But it's all in the business. [00:21:51] It's all of us, though. [00:21:51] You know what I mean? [00:21:52] Because then I'm writing. [00:21:52] No, no, but I'm telling you, because I'm writing something and I'm like, okay, I don't want to write it all for myself because this dude's so funny. [00:21:58] This dude's so funny. [00:22:00] So let's put that in. [00:22:02] Yeah, it is rare enough. [00:22:02] That's right. [00:22:03] No, it's exciting. [00:22:04] Here's the thing. [00:22:06] And I don't know if this is you specific or you've cultivated a team that's also great at this, but like, I think once you really understand story, and I'm always envious of people who really get story, it's easier to trust that person EPing other projects. [00:22:23] Right, right. [00:22:24] And from the episode that I've watched, and I'm assuming it keeps going. [00:22:31] Yeah, You got another 29 to go. [00:22:35] Okay, well, I'm ready. [00:22:36] I got my whole fucking week ready to go. [00:22:38] No, no, no. [00:22:39] But like, I think you really understand story. [00:22:41] And this is something I even see in the stand-up. [00:22:42] But like, but so for me, like, let's say I'm an exec and I go, oh, wow, this guy's crafting story brilliantly. [00:22:49] I think that he could take what Mo has, which is phenomenal story. [00:22:53] I mean, the guy's life is unbelievable. [00:22:54] It's a movie. [00:22:55] But also craft that into a show. [00:22:57] And I could trust it. [00:22:58] I could go, oh, yeah, I could see this guy doing it. [00:23:00] And that's, I think, the different position to be in from like somebody who's maybe on stuff, is famous. [00:23:06] They might not be a storyteller, but they might be an Uber talent. [00:23:09] They're amazing piece within. [00:23:11] Yeah. [00:23:11] Yeah. [00:23:11] So it's hard to like give that person the keys to the organization and say, yeah, create some more stories or create some more shows because that might not be their skill set. [00:23:19] Right. [00:23:19] But it feels to me that that is your genius zone. [00:23:23] It's, well, it's something I'm learning too, right? [00:23:25] Because it's like, even like, it's like, it's, yeah, I learned it getting to make it. [00:23:28] So it's like, we got to make 20 episodes and then it's like going into making Mo's show. [00:23:32] It's like we have 20 behind us. [00:23:34] So then it's like, well, the Mo pilot better be better than this other pilot that we, then the Rami pilot, because like we've got 20 behind us as a team, right? [00:23:40] And then now we're doing this other thing. [00:23:42] And then these things grow and then it's like it'll grow into something that, you know, even I'm not running or whatever because we just got to plant the seeds. [00:23:50] And stand-ups do that all the time. [00:23:51] It's like you bring somebody to open for you and then you go out and then they figure out their thing and then they go do their thing. [00:23:57] So there were so many great stand-ups I opened for. [00:23:59] I opened for Gerard for a while. [00:24:01] I opened for Mark Curry, Hang with Mr. Cooper. [00:24:04] He's the soldier. [00:24:04] Mark Curry is so funny. [00:24:07] The top 10 comedians. [00:24:09] He's unbelievable. [00:24:10] He's so good. [00:24:11] Like people don't understand how funny he is. [00:24:13] And I learned so much just hanging out with a guy like that. [00:24:15] Like he gave me so much. [00:24:16] He was so generous. [00:24:17] So it's like every time someone lets someone open for them, they're being so generous. [00:24:21] And then that person gets to like take it in, put it in with their own sauce and then spread that, you know? [00:24:27] And that's because it's funny, again, like we're in the industry and then you kind of feel this thing where it's because it's all you see. [00:24:33] You feel like so many people are doing it. [00:24:34] When you zoom out and you look at the world, it's like, yo, we're, it's just a few of us. [00:24:38] Yeah. [00:24:39] Just a few of us doing it. [00:24:40] And so the more we're generous with each other, then, you know, there's, there's room for more people. [00:24:44] So that's fun. [00:24:45] 100%. [00:24:46] But yeah, you need people in those positions of, when I say like power, it's not just decision making. [00:24:52] It's like the ability to create. [00:24:54] Yeah, sure. [00:24:54] And not everybody experience. [00:24:56] Yes. [00:24:56] Road hours. [00:24:57] Like when you have the road hours, it's like you start with, and that's, it's so fun too when you're doing stand-up for a while because you can see someone with a 10-minute set at an open mic and they've got two jokes that work, right? [00:25:08] Two jokes that work. [00:25:09] But off the two that work and why they work, you could see their whole career. [00:25:12] Like if they stick with it. [00:25:14] Remember the first joke you wrote that you were like, oh, this is my sauce. [00:25:18] And none of the other one, like the other stuff, you were kind of doing impersonation of what was funny. [00:25:22] And then the more you just keep building around, this is my sauce. [00:25:24] This is my sauce. [00:25:24] This is my sauce. [00:25:25] And then it grows. [00:25:26] That's what's fun. [00:25:27] It's just getting those hours. [00:25:28] I also don't think people understand how brilliant of a stand-up you are because the show has really done so crazy doing so much. [00:25:35] You've kind of, it seems like you're not putting out as much stand-up. [00:25:38] Are you planning on doing that soon? [00:25:39] I'm going to do another hour. [00:25:42] Yeah, I'm going to do, I'm trying to shoot an hour in January. [00:25:44] Yeah. [00:25:45] So I'm excited. [00:25:45] I'm going to be. [00:25:46] Yeah. [00:25:46] Okay. [00:25:46] Get out and do it. [00:25:49] Getting the story down in these episodes. [00:25:52] How many episodes you think you did before you go, oh, I know how to make TV? [00:25:55] When you've made stuff enough, you can really sense where something needs. [00:26:00] And so we have a really good rapport back and forth with that, you know, because the way that our tones are going back and forth, especially in the first season. [00:26:07] And then I think by the time we got to season two, and then probably by season three is like, I'm directing most of the show at this point and I'm just kind of running with it. [00:26:16] So I think like going into, I would say like around mid-second season, I started to understand way more what I wanted from the show in terms of theme and comedy. [00:26:26] So I think season one, I was like, it's got to be funny. [00:26:28] And in season two, I was like, oh, I want more character. [00:26:30] And in season three, I was really thinking, okay, it actually gets harder for me to watch as the show goes on because you're so good at eliciting the emotion from me you want to elicit. [00:26:40] And your character struggles more and more with his like goodness and humanity as the thing goes. [00:26:45] And I'm like, dude, I'm feeling too uncomfortable. [00:26:48] Like you're getting such a strong discomfort. [00:26:50] I mean, I don't know if I can keep watching. [00:26:52] I do because it's so good, but it's fucking hard sometimes. [00:26:54] Wait, why? [00:26:55] Why? [00:26:55] Why? [00:26:56] Because he's, you just watch. [00:26:57] Why do you relate to the character? [00:26:59] Probably on some level that I don't want to, because culturally, you know what I also noticed about your show? [00:27:03] The way white people used to talk about Louie's show, I was like, I don't get it the way y'all get it. [00:27:09] And then when I watch your show, you're Egyptian, I'm Indian. [00:27:12] Obviously, it's very far apart. [00:27:14] You know, not on the Schultz map, but most of the time. [00:27:17] I was like, oh, this must be how white people felt about Louie. [00:27:20] I felt a connection to this show. [00:27:23] Like, I had never seen us represented so accurately on TV. [00:27:26] So to watch you struggling makes me feel like, whether I'm almost watching myself or my brother, whoever struggle. [00:27:32] And it's like, I can't handle it past a certain point. [00:27:34] Yeah. [00:27:34] It's too. [00:27:35] Is that something you're proud of that like all Browns are the same? [00:27:38] Pretty much. [00:27:39] You really get down to it. [00:27:40] Yeah, man. [00:27:42] Yeah, you're not that unique. [00:27:44] Like, we were right. [00:27:44] You know what I mean? [00:27:45] Yeah, but y'all aren't that unique. [00:27:46] You think it's fucking the Irish and Italians are different? [00:27:50] No one cares. [00:27:50] You're the same. [00:27:51] We did a show about you, Brian, just a Scottish American kid trying to figure it out. [00:27:54] With a unique story, dude. [00:27:56] Completely unique. [00:27:58] Just growing up here. [00:27:59] I would like to feel myself. [00:28:01] Whatever I needed. [00:28:02] Going back to Scottish. [00:28:03] Basketball shorts, let's go get them. [00:28:04] And I think that's that's that to me is the talent of Schultz. [00:28:07] You say something super emotional and like really beautiful, and he goes, All brown people are the same. [00:28:11] Like that's somehow what he draws out of it. [00:28:15] Always crying. [00:28:16] You know what I'm saying? [00:28:17] A few moments later. [00:28:19] Is this my camera? [00:28:20] Okay. [00:28:21] Oh, just so you guys know, right now you're seeing something that doesn't quite make sense. [00:28:27] But I have urged the producers of Flagrant to cut out something that would have put Andrew Schultz in grave danger in many parts of the world. [00:28:39] And so I just want you to know, you're welcome. [00:28:42] If you're a fan of this podcast, I saved Andrew Schultz. [00:28:45] Why hasn't there been a Puerto Rican show? [00:28:48] Why are you asking me? [00:28:50] No, he's not Puerto Rican. [00:28:52] A lot of people think I'm Puerto Rican. [00:28:54] I've never been asked this question so directly, but I would love there to be a Puerto Rican show. [00:28:58] Me too. [00:28:59] If there's any Puerto Ricans who have a story, you know, email me. [00:29:03] Yeah. [00:29:06] It's like a sleep statement. [00:29:07] This is like an open casting call. [00:29:09] Puerto Rico. [00:29:11] Email me. [00:29:11] As soon as you get your electricity back, just send me an email. [00:29:14] Oh, God. [00:29:16] This guy's animal. [00:29:17] I'm an animal. [00:29:17] I'm a guy's an animal. [00:29:19] I'm a bad person. [00:29:20] Yeah. [00:29:21] You are. [00:29:22] Okay. [00:29:22] Dear God. [00:29:23] Okay. [00:29:24] Can we get back to the seriousness here? [00:29:27] Listen, we're trying to be real. [00:29:29] We're trying to have like serious conversations. [00:29:31] Oh, my God. [00:29:32] Okay. [00:29:34] One thing. [00:29:36] Be a journalist. [00:29:37] Nothing. [00:29:38] I really wanted to know. [00:29:39] Okay, here's a question. [00:29:40] When you're making a show that is about a culture that maybe the majority of the people that are watching the show or can potentially watch the show are not familiar with, how do you make sure it satisfies the people of the culture and represents them, but also is appealing to people who are unaware of it? [00:30:03] That's something when I was watching the first episode, I was like, God, this is like really fun. [00:30:08] It was maybe, and maybe I'm curious and I like these things, but it was like really fun to learn the little nuances of the culture. [00:30:14] But do you think about that? [00:30:15] Yeah, we think about it all the time. [00:30:16] I mean, we, you know, and this is something that has been exciting about getting to make most show on Netflix with him too, is that it's a totally different tone and it highlights different things. [00:30:25] So there's a lack. [00:30:26] And so we never really create from a lack. [00:30:27] So if I'm making something and I'm saying, well, there's nothing, so it has to be everything, I think it would probably be pretty bad. [00:30:33] So I kind of make something knowing. [00:30:35] There would be a lot of people who don't like that it doesn't have this thing or that thing or don't like what I'm focusing on, you know, focusing on or whatever. [00:30:42] But the parts that do work, I wanted them to at least work for me or like to work for people who I know will find it fun. [00:30:47] So it being its own thing. [00:30:49] But yeah, we don't think about too much of, you know, where people might be upset or anything. [00:30:55] Want to be sensitive, but if you make it from that, you know, comedy, it's not fun when you're just thinking about the reaction. [00:31:01] Yes. [00:31:01] Yeah. [00:31:02] There's a show called RuPaul's Drag Race. [00:31:04] Yeah. [00:31:04] You familiar with it? [00:31:05] I've heard of it. [00:31:06] Incredibly popular show. [00:31:07] Yeah. [00:31:07] And I was speaking to Mateo. [00:31:09] Yeah, of course. [00:31:11] And he said, well, the reason why this, not the reason, but one of the reasons why the show was so popular in the gay community is because it didn't feel like a gay show that was made for stray people. [00:31:21] Yeah. [00:31:21] And I watched your show and I didn't feel like it was made for me. [00:31:24] Yeah. [00:31:24] Like there were things I didn't understand. [00:31:26] Yeah. [00:31:26] And I was really cool because I'm curious and I'm like, oh, I didn't know these things. [00:31:30] But it didn't feel as like, this is how Egyptian Muslims are, white people. [00:31:34] Right, right. [00:31:34] Is that the secret? [00:31:36] Well, that's also what Akash was saying too, about like, why it's hard to watch sometimes when it's like you yeah, because you're like, oh wait, this is kind of like me and that's why it's hard to watch, because I actually think it is for us. [00:31:49] And so sometimes people will be like oh, you're making this show for America and you're whitewashing it or whatever. [00:31:54] I'll have people say that and I always find that odd because yeah, it's an American show but it's so specific to our community like, like so much of what we're getting, and I also think they don't understand what it's. [00:32:05] It's not like it's a struggle, but it is different being American, Egyptian yeah, American and Indian. [00:32:11] Because there's an episode in season one where you go back to Egypt and there was a moment that stuck with me when you're like trying to talk to your Egyptian cousin in Egypt and you're like I want to go see this place and this place and he just fucking like puts you in your place in a way that's like, oh shit, that made me think about my relationship with my cousins in India. [00:32:27] Yeah, like it really does. [00:32:28] It hits you in a way that you're like, oh fuck, I never looked at myself that way. [00:32:32] Yeah, you feel like an outsider. [00:32:34] Yeah yeah, yeah. [00:32:35] And then some of the truths are harsh. [00:32:37] Yeah, isn't any of the negative feedback frustrating when, like you put all this time into making something for you and like the people that look like you and your experience, and then just to have someone be like you know, maybe someone from like a different Muslim sort of like contingent, be like hey, you didn't represent this correctly, you're doing this wrong, you're embarrassing all of us. [00:32:55] Yeah, I mean we. [00:32:57] It sometimes is just disappointing because it's like you uh yeah, you want to connect. [00:33:02] That's why we do this, that's why we do comedy. [00:33:04] It's like oh, I just want to connect with people. [00:33:05] But then, you know, so sometimes I'll feel bad about it, but then also sometimes it's so ridiculous that I can't even pay attention to it. [00:33:12] Like we had put out pictures just for season two, just pictures. [00:33:15] And it was like me and Mahershalali praying and first comment, brother, he has too many prayer beats. [00:33:22] I was like okay well, here I was like you haven't even heard him talk. [00:33:26] Too many beats, brother. [00:33:27] I'm like oh wow, this is gonna be a fun one. [00:33:30] Like I can't wait to see what happens, you know. [00:33:32] But the other thing is because part of part of this is a reaction to what's been done to us so for so many decades. [00:33:40] Most of the content about us is documentaries right, that can be dehumanizing or only show kind of the worst parts. [00:33:46] So we're almost as an audience, because we have so little comedy, we're in documentary mode. [00:33:50] So people walk into my show and they're kind of like wait, this isn't real. [00:33:53] And it's like well yeah, it's a comedy, it's like it's like any other comedy, but we've been so conditioned that everything we're watching about us is like a news report yeah, and so they think i'm making a news report with jokes, and so again, I don't blame the audience. [00:34:07] I mean, I think we're in a tough spot, right. [00:34:09] Just because you're Muslim, you don't necessarily have their trust, like they're skeptical as a, as a yeah, because there's been a massive lack and and everything that we've seen. [00:34:17] And I think they want to be represented, because the representation is normally pretty negative. [00:34:21] I see this a lot with my parents, like they hated Slumdog Millionaire right, like why are you only showing the bad parts of India? [00:34:26] And it's like they're not trying to make a documentary to your point, they're just making a movie about a kid who had a hard life. [00:34:32] But because there's so many negative depictions of India, we're starving for something that's showed the good stuff, so that they see this and like another one, another fucking not good. [00:34:41] But it's also like where cinema and tv are at right now. [00:34:43] Right, so there was, I think there was an era of like, a lot of like, optimistic television. [00:34:48] Yeah, you know something like like a, like a Cosby show or you know all in the film What, like, something that's super positive, and you know, Cosby show, more black men started going to college, you know, the statistical fact. [00:34:59] Like statistical, yeah, statistical fact in America, yeah, right. === Negative Representation in Film (09:15) === [00:35:02] So, Will and Grace is the same thing, right? [00:35:04] So, there's this like level of like after the film came out, like it was some people say that it advocated for gay marriage, and like it was from Joe Biden said that, yeah, Joe Biden. [00:35:14] I mean, it's so funny. [00:35:15] This is so recent, and this is what's really funny about America too, because they look at like other parts of the world and say, Oh, they're so backwards and this and that. [00:35:22] Biden, I think it was not even what 2010, 11 said Will and Grace made him accept gay people, that's why he wants to have gay marriage. [00:35:29] Exactly. [00:35:30] That feels like that's recent. [00:35:32] There's poll data from like the 90s, and it's like 70% of Americans are against gay marriage, and then Will and Grace comes out, and then by like 2007, 8, it's like 30% against gay marriage. [00:35:41] Yeah, but I remember them being pissed at Biden because they were like, Obama was supposed to be supportive first. [00:35:45] You know, I mean, like, even Obama was supposed to be. [00:35:47] Why would Will and why does Will and Grace make people accept gay marriage? [00:35:50] Because you see gay people three-dimensionally as humans, people you like, whereas for a lot of us gay, he hasn't seen an episode. [00:35:59] Will and Grace is about a guy and a girl. [00:36:03] I mean, I actually have never seen the show, and he's gay and lives with his best friend. [00:36:07] You know, it's possible for a guy and a girl to not fuck each other, right, on TV? [00:36:11] I don't know about all that. [00:36:12] No, I don't know about that. [00:36:16] So, Will and Grace was about a gay guy. [00:36:19] Are you doing a thing? [00:36:20] I'm not doing a fucking thing. [00:36:21] I'm not watching Will and Grace. [00:36:22] I'm not acting like weird. [00:36:24] You know what I mean? [00:36:25] What do you think is going on? [00:36:26] Your elephant says differently. [00:36:28] Yeah, this is my dude. [00:36:30] Okay. [00:36:32] Look at Rami. [00:36:33] I'm just, I don't know. [00:36:35] The longer we go, I feel less upset that he's only seen one episode. [00:36:38] He's seen nothing. [00:36:39] He's seen nothing. [00:36:40] They keep asking me to watch Seinfeld. [00:36:45] You know, one of these days, I'm really such a deeply uncultured individual. [00:36:49] I'm not cultured. [00:36:52] All right, no, but you were saying before. [00:36:55] Yeah, let me try and find it. [00:36:56] I always brought up his fucking gay shit and you were talking about actual, cool, interesting things. [00:37:01] And he's like, hi, like, talk about the LGBT for a second. [00:37:04] It's like, can Muslims have a fucking moment, white guy? [00:37:08] Jesus Christ. [00:37:09] There's going to be a gay fatwa in your head. [00:37:10] Dude, what's going on with this guy, dude? [00:37:12] I'm telling you. [00:37:12] No, it's not. [00:37:13] I'm expanding the caliphate, bro. [00:37:15] There's going to be a gay. [00:37:15] Do you know? [00:37:16] Do you know if you've expanded the caliphate? [00:37:19] I don't. [00:37:20] No. [00:37:20] I think you have, dude. [00:37:22] I saw a blonde girl that was Muslim on TikTok. [00:37:25] And you think it was because of me? [00:37:26] 100%. [00:37:29] I think you definitely had a part of it. [00:37:31] 100%. [00:37:32] Yeah, blonde Muslim girl on TikTok. [00:37:34] 11es, Muslims. [00:37:35] The blonde Muslim, I think, was her name. [00:37:36] Really? [00:37:36] Yeah. [00:37:37] Absolutely. [00:37:37] Damn. [00:37:38] What I was going to say. [00:37:40] Yeah. [00:37:40] Damn, we're back. [00:37:41] We're back. [00:37:43] What I was going to say was the, oh, Cosby, right? [00:37:49] Like, just that kind of show. [00:37:51] We haven't had that. [00:37:52] And then I think the show that, you know, I did make is so much weirder. [00:37:59] So it's this weird thing where it's like cinema and TV are at this kind of evolved place where it's like, no one would even make Cosby now because I think most audiences are like, we already saw that. [00:38:08] We want something a little bit different. [00:38:09] Yeah, it doesn't feel as grounded. [00:38:11] We're kind of in a more grounded, satirical place just in terms of television and cinema. [00:38:16] But then, yeah, then you have groups who just haven't had a show that's even just like quote unquote normal. [00:38:21] So again, like I kind of feel for that. [00:38:22] I feel for the when the audience doesn't like what I'm doing because I'm like, I get it. [00:38:26] You do want the Cosby moment, but the Cosby moment was 40 years ago, 30 years ago. [00:38:32] And so it's weird because we're just, it's this time gap. [00:38:36] Go, go, out. [00:38:37] No, I'm saying it's always going to be people in your culture who are the most critical of think about like the powers or the empires. [00:38:44] Like it was black people complaining the most about those shows. [00:38:47] Yeah. [00:38:47] And like, oh, it's so inauthentic. [00:38:49] It's personal. [00:38:50] Yeah. [00:38:50] Yeah. [00:38:51] Personal, but the conversation is all good in a way, even if people are disagreeing, because that's kind of the whole point. [00:38:55] Because if it's touching on a nerve, then people are talking about something, and then the whole point is for a show to create conversations. [00:39:00] How long did it take you to get to that place emotionally? [00:39:03] Even if it's negative, at least they're talking. [00:39:05] Yeah, after the second season, I got to that place. [00:39:08] Okay. [00:39:08] Yeah. [00:39:09] How many takes of that guy cleaning your feet did you have to do? [00:39:14] A lot. [00:39:15] Really? [00:39:15] Yeah, it was in the pilot. [00:39:16] It was weird when he was going in between because that shit was super bad. [00:39:19] That happened to me at a mosque. [00:39:20] Get out of here. [00:39:20] Yeah, this guy, you know, was trying to show me how to do the cleaning for the prayer. [00:39:26] So he grabbed my foot and he was webbing to webbing. [00:39:31] He webbed. [00:39:31] He webbed. [00:39:32] Yeah, I was webbed. [00:39:33] And it happened. [00:39:35] And I wrote about it. [00:39:36] And I'm here and I'm okay. [00:39:37] Oh, nice. [00:39:38] Congrats. [00:39:39] I mean, that's fire. [00:39:40] Do you still talk to that guy? [00:39:42] I didn't know him. [00:39:43] Yeah, no, I don't. [00:39:44] I've never seen him again. [00:39:45] No eye contact, nothing. [00:39:47] I didn't like get webbed and then ask for his number. [00:39:50] Like, no, it was just, it ended there. [00:39:51] He was as a Catholic, I've had similar experiences. [00:39:54] Yeah, yeah. [00:39:56] It wasn't a web, but it looks like a web when it comes out. [00:40:01] We'll talk about that later. [00:40:03] But you see how normal that is? [00:40:04] I had a stranger clean my feet. [00:40:05] I burn him in the middle. [00:40:06] That's true. [00:40:06] Super. [00:40:07] Massage. [00:40:08] Yeah, day one. [00:40:09] Yeah, Burning Man, it's very, it's accepted there. [00:40:13] Everything is about time and place, like where you are. [00:40:15] Yeah, yeah, yeah. [00:40:16] That guy would do great at Burning Man. [00:40:18] The mosque uncle. [00:40:19] Oh, they would love him. [00:40:20] Oh, mosque uncle at Burning Man. [00:40:21] Yeah, they would love him. [00:40:22] People think he was a prophet. [00:40:25] They go, oh my God. [00:40:26] Like, who's this person? [00:40:28] Brown man. [00:40:28] No, I haven't been there. [00:40:30] No. [00:40:30] Really? [00:40:31] You gotta go. [00:40:32] It's still cool. [00:40:34] Wow, dude. [00:40:35] I'm just curious. [00:40:36] No, no, I'm not trying to be judgmental. [00:40:38] Does everything have to be cool, Romney? [00:40:40] No, I mean, maybe it'd be spiritual. [00:40:42] It's just genuinely spiritual. [00:40:43] Yeah, man. [00:40:44] Yeah. [00:40:44] What did you, what did you learn in Burning Man? [00:40:46] What was the biggest lesson? [00:40:51] I learned how fucking expensive it is to rent two RVs. [00:40:55] I did learn that. [00:40:57] That was a hard lesson. [00:40:58] Okay. [00:40:58] No, no. [00:40:59] What did I learn? [00:40:59] I learned what people are capable of when you remove scarcity. [00:41:07] That's beautiful. [00:41:08] Well, I didn't think he meant that. [00:41:10] Yeah, I didn't think he meant it either. [00:41:11] Well, I said it to hear more. [00:41:12] Yeah. [00:41:15] It was like that's beautiful. [00:41:16] And it's like a comedy yes and for emotions. [00:41:20] I feel like that's beautiful. [00:41:22] I just feel like we've talked about the pot a bunch, but a lot then. [00:41:25] But no, it's just like people, when you remove scarcity and you accept them no matter what, are capable of being really kind human beings. [00:41:33] And that's an awesome thing to see, especially growing up here in New York where it feels like everybody's trying to take something from you every second you walk out of your home. [00:41:40] So that was what I knew growing up. [00:41:41] And then I went to this place where people are just trying to give things to you every second you walk out of your OV. [00:41:46] And it was a really weird thing. [00:41:48] And what happened afterwards is I also just wanted to kind of give. [00:41:51] And I felt like guilty that I wasn't providing enough. [00:41:54] Yeah. [00:41:54] And yes, it takes drugs and a random place for a week and people who have enough money to go there to be like that. [00:42:00] But you feel that real experience because it's real. [00:42:03] And then hopefully that comes out with you to the rest of the world. [00:42:06] You know what I mean? [00:42:07] That is beautiful. [00:42:08] I mean, and what's funny too is that like, I think a lot of Arab countries work like that. [00:42:12] Yeah. [00:42:12] They do. [00:42:13] Like Arab communities. [00:42:14] Just go to Egypt. [00:42:15] No, I'm telling you. [00:42:17] But that's the thing about Burning Man. [00:42:18] It's like they're going out in the desert, less electricity, sand. [00:42:20] I'm like, just come to the Middle East. [00:42:21] I don't like that. [00:42:22] He needs my Burning Man. [00:42:23] Our camp, our camp was all Persians. [00:42:26] Yeah, pretty much. [00:42:27] It was pretty much part of the Armos. [00:42:29] Some Persians and Armos. [00:42:30] Yeah, it's like, and Avala even said it. [00:42:32] We were like, he's like, you know, who should we go? [00:42:33] We're late in the game. [00:42:34] He's like, listen, you're going to go to the desert and deal with white people or be with the people who are at home. [00:42:38] The Bedouins. [00:42:39] And they fucking killed it. [00:42:40] It was just amazing. [00:42:41] But they also had that. [00:42:42] The communal aspect. [00:42:43] It was amazing. [00:42:43] The love is there. [00:42:44] Yeah, we're going to get two out there. [00:42:46] You think? [00:42:46] Yeah. [00:42:47] I'm kind of down. [00:42:48] Did you ever have a ball? [00:42:50] Like when you were in college, you ever like stray away from like Islam and like fuck around with like drinking or anything like that? [00:42:55] No, I never drank. [00:42:56] I just didn't philosophically understand why I would do it. [00:43:01] I did shrooms. [00:43:02] I was going to say, you know, so probably weed because every Muslim I know doesn't weed. [00:43:07] Really? [00:43:08] I didn't want to be, no, no hash, no weed. [00:43:09] I didn't want to be sleepy. [00:43:10] How was shrooms? [00:43:12] Amazing. [00:43:12] Yeah. [00:43:13] Yeah. [00:43:13] I literally did it three times, wrote down everything, and then I just, that's, I just have these like three. [00:43:20] Three seasons of Rami. [00:43:21] There you go. [00:43:23] Wait a minute. [00:43:24] Never drank at all. [00:43:25] No. [00:43:25] Wow. [00:43:26] And what do you mean you didn't philosophically get it? [00:43:28] I just like, I have fun hanging out with people. [00:43:30] So I didn't, I didn't need the social lubricant. [00:43:34] But there's also, like, I, so many of my friends do it and they, they have a good time and whatever. [00:43:38] So it's not, it wasn't even from a judgment place. [00:43:39] I was just like, oh, I don't. [00:43:40] I would feel like I was doing it because other people were doing it. [00:43:43] Which, you know, you don't have the social anxiety that some people have. [00:43:48] I think any of it early on, because, you know, we started doing the, like, no one realizes like how early we start doing the cut. [00:43:54] You probably, you guys probably started like early, making things, doing things. [00:43:57] You know, I think I must have been like 14, 13, 14. [00:44:00] You got to start. [00:44:01] Making videos, doing all that stuff. [00:44:02] But anytime I did have social anxiety, but what I did was just, I would have a camera everywhere. [00:44:09] So yeah, I'd just be like, oh, I'm, oh, I'm filming, you know? [00:44:12] So you had a thing to do. [00:44:13] Yeah, you had to do it. [00:44:14] Yeah, yeah. [00:44:14] I would always have a thing to do. [00:44:15] Yeah, that would be good. [00:44:16] Oh, I got a bag. [00:44:17] I got to go somewhere. [00:44:17] I got to go. === Early Video Making Days (03:49) === [00:44:18] So you were also a wisp Nickelodeon very early, right? [00:44:20] Oh, no, Nickelodeon show I did, I was 20. [00:44:23] Oh, okay, okay. [00:44:24] Yeah, there's a, that's weird. [00:44:31] Nickelodeon show? [00:44:32] Like 20 on it, like, I know. [00:44:34] It's a weird age to be on a Nickelodeon show because everyone's like a young kid or an older adult, and then I'm just 20. [00:44:43] It's so odd. [00:44:44] Like, you're just, there's, I have no peers. [00:44:47] But that's how I met Mark Curry. [00:44:48] He was on a Nickelodeon show, too. [00:44:50] Yeah, yeah. [00:44:51] Yeah. [00:44:52] You were hanging with Mr. Cooper? [00:44:53] Was Nickelodeon? [00:44:53] No, he was, it was a different show, but he was playing a neighbor, like a friend. [00:44:58] And then, yeah, so we would shoot this Nickelodeon show during the week. [00:45:01] And then we'd go to different cities and do stand-up on the weekend. [00:45:04] I love it. [00:45:04] It was crazy. [00:45:05] All right, listen, let's get Rami out of here for a second because we know he doesn't know anything about sports. [00:45:09] Okay, the guy's too thoughtful. [00:45:12] Let's talk about some deportes. [00:45:13] Akash, please, what if we never said that you're here and they just didn't notice the difference? [00:45:20] I think something happened to that brown guy. [00:45:23] You want to hear a sports story? [00:45:24] Yeah, yeah, yeah. [00:45:24] Bust it, bust it, bust it, bust it. [00:45:26] He has to hire divorce lawyers. [00:45:29] Son, this is crazy. [00:45:31] Giselle and Tom. [00:45:32] Tom Brady. [00:45:33] Okay. [00:45:33] I'm devastated. [00:45:34] Okay. [00:45:34] Why? [00:45:35] Because this is the GOAT of all GOATs. [00:45:37] First L of Tom's career. [00:45:38] First L of Tom's career. [00:45:40] And it's not even that he can't do better. [00:45:42] He can. [00:45:42] He's going to do better. [00:45:43] Is it an L or did he find a way to get rid of his wife as she turned 40? [00:45:47] Like, is it, like, is this just another Tom dub? [00:45:52] You know what else it could be? [00:45:54] He's finally, he was always less rich than her because he would take the pay code. [00:45:58] Oh, that's fine. [00:45:58] Now he's building out Brady Brand. [00:46:00] He's doing all this stuff. [00:46:01] And right before I really get kicked out, let me just pull the Bezos. [00:46:06] Exactly. [00:46:06] Pulled a motherfucking Bezos. [00:46:08] And this is Corona time. [00:46:09] Brady Brand is going to build out. [00:46:11] TB12 going to build out. [00:46:12] He's going to get 30 million a year, whatever the fuck is that. [00:46:14] So right by the time he becomes a billionaire, he gets rid of the wife who was carrying him all these years. [00:46:20] She's gone. [00:46:22] It might be what he did with Belichick. [00:46:23] I don't need you anymore. [00:46:24] We're good. [00:46:25] Guy can't lose. [00:46:26] He can't. [00:46:27] But I'm still devastated, dude. [00:46:28] He was always so perfect. [00:46:29] Yeah. [00:46:30] He had the happy wife. [00:46:31] He had the happy family. [00:46:32] The kids I feel bad for. [00:46:33] I don't even know why she's allowing this to happen. [00:46:36] I think, and this is a weird tie-in to bring, but I remember when Kobe was going through his legal troubles. [00:46:41] Yeah. [00:46:42] He went bananas in the playoffs. [00:46:44] And everybody's like, how's he doing this? [00:46:46] Literally, he literally would have court dates and then go play games and then play out of his mind. [00:46:50] Yeah, and everybody's like, how is he doing this? [00:46:52] And then my friend was like, of course this is how he's doing. [00:46:54] He's so stressed all day that now he's actually one thing to focus on. [00:46:58] Yeah, and this is my only joy, i'm gonna destroy everything and take all my bet the house on the Buccaneers. [00:47:04] So I yo, i'm betting on the bucks. [00:47:05] Yeah, i'm betting on the bucks, big baby. [00:47:07] I had a couple other picks that I still think will be good, but i'm betting on the bucks to win big. [00:47:12] And we're bet hey, bet online betonline.ag. [00:47:16] Okay, we're putting it all in the bucks. [00:47:18] Uh also, if you use that code flagrant, they're gonna match that initial deposit bonus 50 of it up to a thousand dollars. [00:47:24] So make sure you get that shit. [00:47:25] Bet online.ag, yeah, bet with the bonus money. [00:47:27] So if I you lose, I don't feel bad. [00:47:28] There you go. [00:47:29] Um damn bro, Tom Brady, Catching, it could be w could be l dude. [00:47:34] Imagine this is what he needs. [00:47:36] Like this is the fire he needed. [00:47:37] What if he didn't have any? [00:47:38] So he had to win another championship to prove that he could do it without Belly. [00:47:43] But now he's bored, he's 45, he doesn't want to play. [00:47:47] Yeah, he needed a little bit of inspiration. [00:47:50] And this girl probably said, it's not like you're gonna win again, why would you even play? [00:47:54] Oh, divorce all the motivation needs to divorce. [00:47:59] How dare she? [00:47:59] Yeah, how dare she? [00:48:01] Question the goat in her deep ass Brazilian voice. [00:48:04] Why don't you want to be with me even more, Tom Dom? === Tom Brady Championship Fire (02:51) === [00:48:07] Why don't you want to be with me anymore? [00:48:10] Don't you want to retire and do the sunset together? [00:48:13] You know, think how much testosterone those kids are going to have. [00:48:15] Those boys are going to be mighty better than Tom. [00:48:17] That's why tomorrow's kiss him on the mouth to build up the estrogen. [00:48:22] The last kiss before the boys gets too deep. [00:48:24] Dude anyway listen uh, best of luck to Tom and Jizo and uh, let's get Raley back in here. [00:48:30] All right also, big Daisy energy tickets actually. [00:48:33] First of all, let me say thank you to everybody who came out to good nights in Raleigh. [00:48:36] It was crazy. [00:48:37] We performed. [00:48:38] Hurricane Ian was sliding through, we had to cancel one show and so many people still showed up to the 1030 show. [00:48:44] It was amazing. [00:48:45] It was awesome, one of the best shows we've ever had. [00:48:47] Thank you so much to everybody who came through. [00:48:48] I was amazed that you guys showed that kind of love. [00:48:50] Also upcoming dates, october 6th through 8th, this week i'm going to be at the Improv in Pittsburgh. [00:48:55] October 14th and 15th, next week i'm going to be at Virginia Beach, Virginia again. [00:49:00] Nothing remarkable about each of these cities. [00:49:01] Don't pretend you have better things to do. [00:49:03] October 27th through 29th, Philly Helium Comedy Club. [00:49:08] That's a cool city. [00:49:09] You got things to do, but you're all miserable, so why don't you just come laugh at Helium Comedy Club? [00:49:13] Also. [00:49:14] Quick announcement, before we get back to the show, the the improv shows we have in december have been postponed. [00:49:21] We will get a new date and I will get it to you. [00:49:22] I know a bunch of you bought tickets already, but we will find a new date for you guys for the three shows I named and the rest of the shows for the Big Daisy Energy tour this year. [00:49:30] Go to Akashing.com, get your tickets before they sell out and let's get back to the show about uh, alcohol or drugs, whatever it is. [00:49:38] I think humans do need an escape, right? [00:49:40] And I think, like in the Muslim world, you see it with maybe Sheesha, right? [00:49:44] It's like just a moment to kind of like separate myself from reality. [00:49:48] Just a little bit of separation. [00:49:49] Sometimes it's cigarettes, sometimes it's alcohol, sometimes it's weed. [00:49:52] Weed become incredibly popular right now. [00:49:54] What do you think that is? [00:49:55] Why do we need a little break from ourselves? [00:49:58] Well, we're sick of ourselves. [00:50:01] I mean, that's the thing about living in like a crazy, hyper-individualized society is that it's not replenishing to just work for yourself and think about yourself and do all that. [00:50:11] And so there's the root of, you know, it could be socially or it could be some sort of disassociation to be like, I got to do a ton of drugs or I got to drink. [00:50:19] I just need to say it without, but yeah, you're just needing a break, but I think the biggest break is to just stop thinking about yourself. [00:50:25] The basis of any meditation, any prayer, any spiritual thing is, oh, how about I not live for myself? [00:50:32] And it's the most freeing thing. [00:50:33] Yeah. [00:50:34] Because it's just, it's, it's, it's, it's, it, yeah, it gets really dark when you're just living for you. [00:50:39] Especially in this time where like maybe biologically we're supposed to have kids already. [00:50:43] Yeah. [00:50:44] And when you have kids, you can't only think for yourself. [00:50:46] Like for these other humans, you got to keep alive. [00:50:48] Right. [00:50:48] So there's this removal of focus on self, which is probably really fucking healthy. [00:50:53] But I'm 38. [00:50:54] I don't have kids. [00:50:54] How old are you? [00:50:55] I'm 31. [00:50:56] 31. [00:50:57] Okay. [00:50:57] So you've got a little bit more before it's go time. === Stopping Self-Focus Meditation (03:49) === [00:50:59] Sure. [00:51:00] But still to go that long without anybody else to focus on but you. [00:51:03] Plus, you have God, which is really important. [00:51:05] Yeah. [00:51:06] But like, yeah, I agree with you. [00:51:07] Yeah. [00:51:07] That like constant focus on self. [00:51:11] And we need a little bit of separation. [00:51:13] Yeah, maybe that's what meditation is. [00:51:14] Maybe that's what all these practices are. [00:51:16] It's like, yo, just, you're not that fucking cool, dude. [00:51:19] Yeah, just chill. [00:51:20] Yeah. [00:51:20] Have you always had this point of view? [00:51:22] Like that it's replenishing to give or is that something you found as you got older? [00:51:26] I learned it from my parents. [00:51:27] Yeah, that was my parents were really about that. [00:51:29] They were like, yeah, just we gotta, we gotta give, we gotta give. [00:51:32] You know, that was, I didn't understand what it was until later. [00:51:35] I didn't have the language around it, but that, that was, that was always the energy with them. [00:51:40] Do you know any of you guys have kids? [00:51:42] No. [00:51:43] Yeah, you have podcasts. [00:51:48] You have kids in a podcast? [00:51:50] Yeah, you're on the podcast. [00:51:51] Yeah, that was a stupid question. [00:51:53] Have you gotten more devout since making the show? [00:51:57] I mean, it's like anything, any, I feel like anything I'm doing in my life, I just want to do more of, or just get closer to or clearer to. [00:52:05] So yeah, I mean, it's like it scales. [00:52:08] You know, we, the more that, I think also too, the older we get, the more we're like, I don't want to spend my time doing anything that I don't love. [00:52:14] The more successful you get also. [00:52:16] Well, you're right. [00:52:16] You don't have time. [00:52:17] Well, you have the freedom to do the things that you want. [00:52:20] You don't have to do a fucking Nickelodeon show to like pay rent, right? [00:52:24] Like, no, but for real, like, I'm sure, I'm sure you're like, okay, your dad had to do Nickelodeon to pay rent to some dating show on MTV. [00:52:34] I didn't want to do it. [00:52:35] You know what I mean? [00:52:36] But it's like, we do these things to get to where we are. [00:52:39] And now when you make the thing you can do, I want to make. [00:52:41] Your Uncle Andrew was on Guy Code. [00:52:44] I was on Nickelodeon. [00:52:47] And we did all this so you could be you. [00:52:51] Now go be a DJ. [00:52:55] You have the power. [00:52:57] Okay. [00:52:58] Listen, I know that you don't have to. [00:53:00] Our kids are going to hate us. [00:53:01] No, they're not. [00:53:03] But isn't it funny, though, like growing up with like the dads who didn't talk? [00:53:06] Yeah. [00:53:06] And then we're like, let's be like expressive and share our feelings. [00:53:09] I feel like our kids are going to be like, man, my dad doesn't shut up. [00:53:11] Shut the fuck up. [00:53:12] You know what I mean? [00:53:13] I'm at home. [00:53:14] I got this happy dad. [00:53:15] Just hate about his emotions. [00:53:19] And that's why I just build houses. [00:53:21] Like, I feel like all our kids are just going to like, we're going to farm and just like live off the land. [00:53:28] And then, oh, my dad's got to upload something to the algorithm. [00:53:32] Because, you know, my dad's a YouTube advertised build. [00:53:36] Oh, yeah. [00:53:36] Like, our kids are going to unplug hard. [00:53:38] No, that's how we're going to get them to play. [00:53:40] How to play with them. [00:53:41] Yeah, we know right now they're like, they don't play. [00:53:43] They're just inside on the iPad. [00:53:44] But we're just going to be talking to them about their feelings. [00:53:46] They're going to be like, I think I'm going to go on a slink. [00:53:49] No, dude, playing outside is going to have a huge comeback. [00:53:52] Huge. [00:53:52] Yeah, yeah, yeah. [00:53:53] Trees are back. [00:53:54] I've got the optimism. [00:53:55] Trees are back soon. [00:53:56] Trees, trees. [00:53:57] Just hanging out in grass. [00:53:58] Tree houses. [00:53:59] There's been a treehouse dip coming back up. [00:54:02] That's the next big startup. [00:54:03] Yeah, the treehouse market. [00:54:04] You can't charge rent in those dubs or let's know what you do. [00:54:09] Pedophiles are salivating right now. [00:54:13] Pedophiles. [00:54:16] We take everything. [00:54:18] Everything, yeah, yeah. [00:54:18] We're talking about nature somehow. [00:54:22] Listen, Rami, listen. [00:54:24] I know we don't have all day with you, but is there anything else that we want to talk to this? [00:54:28] I'm so fucking stoked for you. [00:54:29] I love that you're working with Akash on something. [00:54:32] I love that you've taken care of your boys that you've created these shows with. [00:54:34] I think it's really fucking admirable. [00:54:36] And it's great to see guys who are very funny also succeeding. [00:54:41] And it's always happening and do it the right way. [00:54:43] Likewise, you guys. [00:54:45] And tell it, tell Andrew where you can find your show. === Pitching to Hulu (01:18) === [00:54:48] Yeah, yeah. [00:54:48] Let's let him know. [00:54:49] Yeah, Hulu. [00:54:50] Is it pronounced that way? [00:54:52] Hulu. [00:54:53] Yeah. [00:54:53] Okay. [00:54:53] Yeah, what were you saying? [00:54:56] Alhulum Dillah. [00:54:58] You were saying Alhamdulillah. [00:55:00] Yeah, I thought that I was short for. [00:55:02] Oh, you thought Hulu was short for it? [00:55:04] Yeah. [00:55:05] That's the ad I'm going to pitch to Hulu. [00:55:07] I'm just saying. [00:55:08] Season four, inshallah. [00:55:10] You know what I mean? [00:55:10] Inshallah. [00:55:11] Okay.
