Flagrant - Andrew Schulz & Akaash Singh - Schulz Reacts: Chappelle's Boycott Makes Dollars Not Sense Aired: 2020-12-12 Duration: 13:13 === Leverage From Bad Deals (05:04) === [00:00:00] What up people Sheltie here and you guys are about to listen to a clip from our weekly Patreon episode if you want to sign up to our Patreon support the flagrancy support what we are doing completely uncensored flagrant content you go to patreon.com slash flagrant2 with no more interruptions here is the exclusive clip let's talk about dave crying [00:00:28] We're gonna see Dave this week when we go to Austin. [00:00:32] So I'm gonna go do Rogan in Austin and him and him and Dave have a show this this this week at Austin. [00:00:37] They're doing these like outdoor shows where they like COVID test everybody and shit like that. [00:00:41] So I don't know. [00:00:42] Maybe we'll get to talk to him there and I'll just ask him about it. [00:00:44] But it was just like I think I don't know like I was just kind of like turned off by when I was watching it and I'm like, why am I turned off watching you do this? [00:00:54] We're talking about unforgiven, which is the latest thing he put off. [00:00:57] And I think it was just like it was it was Scotty Pippen behavior for me. [00:01:02] Yeah. [00:01:02] You know what I mean? [00:01:03] Like complain about the contract that you negotiated you signed is very Scotty Pippen, but that's not GOAT behavior. [00:01:10] Like Michael Jordan didn't do that. [00:01:12] Michael Jordan, I think at the point of his career, was making a million dollars more than Scotty, right? [00:01:15] And he cashed in later in his career based on all the success that he built within those contracts that he signed and then lived up to. [00:01:22] And like, I don't know. [00:01:23] I just, I was kind of just turned off. [00:01:25] I think Dave is the greatest. [00:01:26] I think. [00:01:27] I think Patrice is the greatest. [00:01:28] That's my GOAT. [00:01:28] But Dave is unbelievable, man. [00:01:30] Unreal. [00:01:31] Yeah. [00:01:31] I think he's the greatest public speaker that I've ever seen. [00:01:35] And yeah, we might have discussed this privately, but the way he tells a story is fucking amazing. [00:01:39] The fucking three-card monty story was so good, so powerful as a storyteller. [00:01:43] But you negotiated a shitty contract and then you kind of misrepresented the circumstances under which you signed the contract. [00:01:49] I signed that contract the way a 27-year-old with a kid, you weren't a 27-year-old with a kid, you're a 27-year-old who had been in A-list movies, who had an HBO special. [00:01:58] This contract was that much more complicated than You've Gotten Mail. [00:02:01] Did he have a good agent at the time? [00:02:03] I mean, he was in You've Got Mail with fucking Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. [00:02:07] You're not getting that with some bum ass middle-tier boutique agency. [00:02:11] He's with the big dogs. [00:02:12] They're working this out. [00:02:13] And it's not like you didn't, you might say I signed a bad deal because they were all in on it, but don't put it on. [00:02:20] I was just a 27-year-old, wet behind the ears. [00:02:22] You were successful for a decade. [00:02:24] And we have not been kind to other people who signed bad contracts and complained about them. [00:02:28] For me, I got it personally. [00:02:30] I had to keep that same energy. [00:02:31] Don't do that. [00:02:32] That is the thing. [00:02:32] It's just like I think that we naturally kind of reject fraudulence. [00:02:39] Yes. [00:02:39] So it's like we're watching him and we're like, I see you want to get your money for these seasons for that contract that you signed where you shouldn't have. [00:02:47] Yep. [00:02:47] But the way you're going about it is just kind of corny. [00:02:51] But all right, do you. [00:02:52] You're trying to like get the people to bully the different networks so that you can get a piece of that money. [00:02:57] You want to get your money, get your money. [00:02:58] That's fine. [00:02:59] But I'm not going to play along with the masquerade. [00:03:02] I see you. [00:03:03] It's a brilliant negotiation. [00:03:05] If like I was, I don't have a relationship with Spell like that, but if I had known him from back in the day, like if I'm Donnell or something like that, and he came off stage, you'd just be like, oh, is that how it went down? [00:03:16] I'll hit him with one of these. [00:03:17] That was Oscar worthy, my guy. [00:03:19] That's the thing. [00:03:20] Oscar worthy. [00:03:20] I like the move. [00:03:21] You know what I mean? [00:03:22] It was a great negotiation. [00:03:23] You do a deal you don't like, and then you get the leverage later on. [00:03:25] You go, yeah, let me patch up those old mistakes I made. [00:03:27] Boom. [00:03:28] Let me fix the thing I didn't. [00:03:29] It's the only way he could get it back is to get the people to get upset and then get them be like, I don't want the PR game. [00:03:34] The style of it is annoying, like whining about it, all that shit. [00:03:36] I also think the people that like cry for millionaires are idiots. [00:03:41] Yes. [00:03:41] You know what I mean? [00:03:41] Like the people in the comments being like, if this is a win for Dave, this is a win for us. [00:03:46] You know what I mean? [00:03:47] Like, I don't know. [00:03:47] Like, the people on Dave's side for that. [00:03:50] I'm like, all right, whatever. [00:03:51] I'll speak from it. [00:03:51] Can I speak from it from the producer side to the talents that you guys are? [00:03:56] Speak from it from the Jew side. [00:03:59] You tricked him into signing the contract. [00:04:01] Let me tell you about it. [00:04:02] The deal that he signed, I believe, because he had good agents, was a standard deal that they give to different talents. [00:04:09] Nobody, none of those buyers knew it would become the Chappelle show. [00:04:12] So you can't think the talent wants to think that they made that decision in a vacuum just for Chappelle. [00:04:17] But what they're doing as a network is making decisions for their entire slate of projects for maybe 10 different comedy shows. [00:04:24] And the way that they make money is that they lose because they took a risk on six of those shows. [00:04:30] And then the Chappelle show is supposed to make up for those six losses. [00:04:34] And then they have a couple wins somewhere in the middle. [00:04:36] So that's why you also don't have the benefit of hindsight to know it's a winner or a loss. [00:04:40] Yeah, that's another thing. [00:04:40] It's like up to that point, he had not had anything that was wildly successful on a financial front. [00:04:48] Like maybe the not how high? [00:04:50] What is it called? [00:04:50] Half baked. [00:04:51] Half baked. [00:04:52] I think that was successful amongst like us and like college kids thought it was really funny. [00:04:56] But in terms of making money, it wasn't a financial success yet. [00:04:59] Maybe it did later in DVD. [00:05:01] Even if it was successful, which I would think it was, just no, initially it wasn't. === Chappelle's Magic Saves The Slate (08:08) === [00:05:04] Okay. [00:05:05] But he hated it. [00:05:06] Regardless, regardless. [00:05:07] But like, I guess the point is, there's no standard for how you're going to do. [00:05:12] Like now, for example, when Dave Chappelle does a deal with Netflix, he can say, yo, I want $100 million. [00:05:17] And then Netflix goes, well, shit, you're Dave Chappelle. [00:05:18] Like, when I give her, you put anything out, the entire world watches it. [00:05:20] So you're worth $100 million. [00:05:22] Proof of concept. [00:05:22] Exactly. [00:05:23] But so again, I think you made a good point. [00:05:25] I like, yo, get your money, fix the bad deal, but don't. [00:05:29] We see you. [00:05:30] Yeah, like you're not going to act like I don't see what the fuck is going on over there. [00:05:34] Like, you've been in the business your whole life. [00:05:35] You know how the business works. [00:05:36] You know what I mean? [00:05:37] You're like, the business broke me. [00:05:39] What was he even saying? [00:05:41] I took exception to this when he was like, I, Muslim, I didn't drink or smoke until you guys got me to drink or smoke. [00:05:47] Do not put your failure of your God on someone else. [00:05:52] To me, it's like, bro, Mark, there's nothing I could do that would make you do anything that's outside of your faith. [00:05:57] It's just not going to happen. [00:05:58] And if I did, you wouldn't put it on me. [00:06:00] And oh, the stress of a show. [00:06:03] No, you guys will never get me to drink. [00:06:05] You're just not going to. [00:06:06] It's not going to happen. [00:06:07] That's me and God. [00:06:08] And if it does, I'm not going to be like, you guys, I failed God because of you. [00:06:12] Don't do that shit. [00:06:13] And he got Muslims in his corner. [00:06:15] They should keep it a buck with him. [00:06:16] Be like, don't, don't bullshit everybody in the room, including yourself. [00:06:19] That's you. [00:06:20] We got to get our cost drunk. [00:06:21] Chappelle got some magic, man. [00:06:23] No, we all got to get. [00:06:24] We had him smoke. [00:06:26] See, yeah. [00:06:26] Yeah, we're going to trick you into drinking, bro. [00:06:28] I'm more into drinking than smoking. [00:06:29] And eating a burger, bro. [00:06:31] I'm going to get you to eat a burger. [00:06:32] I used to eat beef, but once I stopped, I stopped. [00:06:34] Wow. [00:06:36] Get your money, Dave. [00:06:38] All right, guys, we're going to take a break for a second so you could satisfy the woman of your dreams. [00:06:42] Simple as that. [00:06:43] You got to satisfy the woman of your dreams or the woman of the nights. [00:06:46] Or ladies, the man of the nights, or the man of your dreams. [00:06:49] The reality is y'all should be satisfied. [00:06:51] And there's one way to do it. [00:06:52] You got to blue chew it. [00:06:53] The blue chew. [00:06:54] Okay, same active ingredients that are inside Seattle Survivor. [00:06:57] Only this is the chew. [00:07:00] And this is what the flagrant boys use. [00:07:02] Okay. [00:07:02] We will not play around out here. [00:07:04] We are out here serving up dick the way it should be served. [00:07:07] And that's hard. [00:07:08] And that's ideally not fast. [00:07:10] But it doesn't matter. [00:07:11] Bluechew.com. [00:07:13] You make sure you use that promo code Flagrant. [00:07:15] You're going to get it delivered right for your door for free. [00:07:17] All you need to do is pay $5 shipping. [00:07:19] And you're going to get the best dick of your life, ladies. [00:07:21] Fellas, you're going to deliver up the best dick of your life. [00:07:23] You're going to serve that dick up as you should. [00:07:25] I don't know why I'm raising my voice and speaking almost in a whisper, but I'm so excited by this chew that you got to get there and you got to do it. [00:07:32] So bluechew.com, make sure you use that promo code flagrant. [00:07:35] And let's get back to the show. [00:07:37] Hey, what's up, Al? [00:07:39] Dave, Dave has a magical power of some sort because, like, I was probably doing shit while just watching it in the background, and I fell for all that shit. [00:07:50] I fell for all that shit. [00:07:51] I'm hearing you guys now, and I'm just like, oh, yeah, it makes so much sense. [00:07:54] But then when I was watching him, I'm like, damn, they really fucking him over on his scene like this hard, this art that he created and he can't even get it back and shit. [00:08:02] Yo, and then I fucking know, I think I posted some of my story like boycott Dave Chappelle's show or some shit like that. [00:08:07] Fucking, and thanks for calling me stupid. [00:08:09] My favorite part is like he's there complaining about how like Comedy Central like took everything from him. [00:08:17] And it's like, that show gave you everything. [00:08:21] Like low-key. [00:08:22] And again, go get your money, do whatever you want, right? [00:08:24] But like everything that he got was after that show popped off that he earned himself by making that show absolutely amazing me and talented as fuck. [00:08:32] But I'm sure there's like a little part of you that's probably like, hey, man, thanks for that opportunity. [00:08:37] That's pretty cool. [00:08:38] To your point. [00:08:39] You know what I mean? [00:08:40] I'm not looking back at MTV going, and this very different. [00:08:43] Of course, Dave went to superstard him after Comedy Central. [00:08:45] You know, I did okay with MTV, but I'm still grateful for the opportunity. [00:08:50] I don't know. [00:08:50] To your point, I went to, I was a huge Dave Chappelle fan from Killing Them Softly, went to see him in Dallas at the Majestic Theater. [00:08:58] Like the second week Chappelle show was on the air. [00:09:01] He just happened to be in Dallas months in advance, bought tickets. [00:09:04] Theater is half empty at least. [00:09:06] Two years later, you could scalp that same ticket for thousands of dollars. [00:09:10] Get your money, Dave. [00:09:11] And it's from a Comedy Central contract that did fuck him. [00:09:14] But to your point, that led to. [00:09:16] But did it fuck him if he ends up becoming the most successful comedian in the world and the greatest comedian in history? [00:09:21] The most people did it really. [00:09:22] Fuck you. [00:09:22] Yeah, where at this point, I got all of you. [00:09:24] Get your money splitting hairs. [00:09:25] Did it fuck you? [00:09:25] I'm splitting hairs. [00:09:26] That's going to happen, though. [00:09:27] Fuck me then. [00:09:28] You know what I'm saying? [00:09:29] That kind of fucking seems good. [00:09:31] Like all those Motown artists that sign these terrible deals, become famous and lose all their money. [00:09:35] It's like, they're not famous and they got some money, but they kind of got fucked at the same time. [00:09:40] I just think artists should have the ability to buy back their art. [00:09:44] Say what? [00:09:44] I just think somebody who creates something should have the ability to own it. [00:09:48] I think that in a vacuum, that makes absolute sense. [00:09:51] And as creatives, I'm going to side with you 100%. [00:09:55] If I'm not the creative, if I'm the bank, you know what I mean? [00:09:58] And the bank is like, hold up. [00:10:00] So I'm going to take all the risk here. [00:10:03] And then when the shit becomes profitable, I got to give you the opportunity to buy it back. [00:10:07] No, but charge them for it. [00:10:09] Like, be like, okay, this is what I think I would have made if I kept it. [00:10:14] Are you willing to pay that? [00:10:15] That's what I'm saying. [00:10:16] So give me. [00:10:17] That's what I was going to say. [00:10:18] I guarantee you their valuation will be super high. [00:10:22] If you're Chappelle, you're probably going to be like, I feel like it's worth this much. [00:10:26] I'll pay you this much. [00:10:27] And he's going to be like, oh, they're trying to charge me, you know, nine figures. [00:10:30] It's extortion. [00:10:30] But he's genius, though, because what he's doing is maybe that's his plan. [00:10:34] And what he's doing is driving down the price for the show. [00:10:36] Because nobody streams it. [00:10:38] Right. [00:10:38] Because if he's like, yo, nobody watch my shit. [00:10:40] And then he goes, yo, can I buy back the rights? [00:10:42] Comedy Central's got to be like, well, shit, we can't sell it to nobody. [00:10:46] Might as well sell to him if he's the only one available. [00:10:48] And then he can go flip it on the backside. [00:10:50] So get your money, Dave. [00:10:51] Get your money. [00:10:52] Just don't expect us to believe that shit. [00:10:55] You know? [00:10:55] That's true. [00:10:56] Yeah. [00:10:57] That's all it is. [00:10:59] For me, I hold him maybe up to too high esteem. [00:11:01] Maybe that's the thing. [00:11:02] You know what I mean? [00:11:03] So when I see the Scottie Pippen behavior, I'm just like, ah, we're not crying, are we, man? [00:11:07] We're not going to cry. [00:11:08] Well, this is the first time comics outside of us, I've ever gotten like a critical text about Dave. [00:11:12] I had a group thread of comics being like, yo, I'm talking about it. [00:11:16] They'd be saying that in a text. [00:11:17] And then they coming on a pod. [00:11:18] Like, oh, my God. [00:11:18] Hashtag Boycott Chappelle. [00:11:20] Posting it all over. [00:11:21] I don't disagree with you. [00:11:22] It's bad funny to see all these like, sorry to colour, like, all, like, the rappers, they got labels and shit. [00:11:27] Like, boycott Chappelle's show. [00:11:28] They're saying, you got artists that need some masters bought too? [00:11:31] Yeah. [00:11:32] You got some deals signed that you might want to look back on. [00:11:35] Yup, you're not wrong, but you brought up a good point to me off-pod, which was like, this is actually the best way, Chappelle's show, for young kids to find out about Chappelle. [00:11:43] Like, he put together one of the greatest shows. [00:11:47] Greatest sketch show in history. [00:11:48] Greatest sketch show in history. [00:11:49] One of the greatest comedy shows of all time, probably to rank like the top 100. [00:11:52] It's probably there. [00:11:53] Two seasons of brilliance. [00:11:54] If you're a young kid that's too young to remember 2001, which is a lot of kids, you're going to look at this and be like, oh, this is why Dave is Dave. [00:12:02] That's why I remember what you said to me, and I was like, that's a good fucking point. [00:12:06] You could see, he could expose an entire generation to kids of like, yo, this is why motherfuckers listen to me do a special at the comedy store and tell a 30-minute story about iceberg slim. [00:12:16] This is why. [00:12:17] And to be honest, that was even more poetic than the fucking Bird Revelation or whatever, the comedy store, Iceberg Slim, even better than the three Cardamanti story. [00:12:24] He'll talk about the industry fucking you in the most poetic ways. [00:12:28] Yeah, it's unbelievable. [00:12:30] You're so romanticized by it, and that's how he wins you over. [00:12:32] How much he get for the next Netflix deal? [00:12:35] I don't know, something crazy. [00:12:36] 50? [00:12:36] I think he got his 50 back. [00:12:38] I think he's pretty strategic to your point. [00:12:39] Fuck me, bro. [00:12:41] This industry is horrible. [00:12:42] I mean, the 50 million was nice. [00:12:44] This industry will beat you down. [00:12:46] Come on, bro. [00:12:47] And you went to get drunk? [00:12:49] This ain't not fair at all. [00:12:51] We're not buying it, babe. [00:12:52] We're not buying it. [00:12:53] But get your money, bro. [00:12:54] Yeah, we love you, boy. [00:12:55] Get your money, bro. [00:12:56] We boy cotton too. [00:12:58] All right, guys.
